Thinking about the Namor discourse, I'm reminded of the Killmonger discourse from back when the first movie came out. Almost everyone agreed that he was right, but that his methods were extreme, and that Nakia had already suggested the same things without the violence. Killmonger's stance was... surprisingly just like Namor's. Basically burn the world, take it over (although Namor seems to have little differentiation between poor, oppressed people of the surface and the oppressors of the surface. At least that's how it seems.)
But there was also this huge rise in fans of Killmonger. He's a cool, confident character, played by a handsome actor, who was fun and cool to watch. He was definitely killed off too soon, though. Marvel had that problem of killing their villains back then, when comics heroes usually encounter their villains many times.
Now the main difference between Killmonger and Namor is that Namor isn't a villain. Killmonger comes from a straight forward villain character in the comics. Namor is an antihero in the comics. He has a long-standing feud with T'Challa and Wakanda, and they clash often for reasons similar to this movie. But Namor isn't supposed to be hated as a villain. He's coming from a completely unique perspective than everyone on the surface. Comparing Tenoch Huerta's Namor to the Namor in the comics, they're very similar in that their main goal is the safety and protection of their underwater society. Sometimes, that aligns Namor with the surface heroes. Often, he clashes with them, either because of his own extreme views (burn the world) or because they're getting up to something that puts Atlantis in harm's way (Talokan in the MCU).
So, when I'm seeing a lot of like... takedowns of people who like Namor, and who are attracted to Tenoch, and comments like "Anything for a sexy face" and "y'all wouldn't do this for a Black man" it feels very much... to me... like unfamiliarity with the character. Namor is a superhero, not a villain. We're not supposed to see him like Loki or Thanos. That's why they've been billing him as "the first Mexican SUPERHERO" in the press tour. He is an antagonist for Wakanda a lot of the time, but that's because Marvel comics are actually quite good at nuances. A lot of characters aren't strict hero/villain archetypes in Marvel comics. Look at Magneto and Professor X, as an example. You're gonna tell me Professor X is a moral good superhero and Magneto is a moral bad supervillain? Especially in the current comics where all Mutants live in Krakoa together and have a society protected from the rest of the world. You're gonna tell me Iron Man is a strictly good superhero? Like, nuance is how the comics work. That's what Coogler is actually really good at bringing to his MCU projects and it's why he's the perfect director to even handle a character like Namor.
Coogler knows how to bring the nuance. It's why everyone loved Killmonger, too, even if we didn't agree with him. (Though some of y'all did.) Nuance shows us why Killmonger wants to do what he's doing.
As far as "wouldn't do this for a Black man" takes... isn't that disingenuous when talking to fans of the Black Panther franchise? It's not like the franchise was small or didn't do well. It was one of the most successful movies of the Infinity Saga, up there with Infinity War and Endgame. Most people in these tags HAVE gone up for a Black man. T'Challa was not lacking in love. Neither was Killmonger. Or even M'Baku. How many oneshots I read about M'Baku taking care of his "vegetarian children" because of that one off, throwaway line "Just kidding. We are vegetarians." (Loved the callback to it in this movie with him eating a carrot while talking to the council!) People liking Tenoch Huerta and thinking his version of Namor is attractive has nothing to do with whether or not people find the Black men attractive. But for what it's worth, THERE'S ONLY ONE MAIN BLACK MAN IN THIS MOVIE and that's M'Baku. Unless you expect a bunch of teen and 20-something fans to go up over the elders on the council. T'Challa has passed, W'Kabi is in jail and never shown, Killmonger does show up for a cameo but that's not a main role. All we get is M'Baku. And people are going up for him, because people love M'Baku. This is a movie about a whole country of badass Black women. The only male characters of consequence are M'Baku, Namor, and Ross.
Namor is just a shiny new character and again, not a villain AND provides representation to an entirely different group of people. People are allowed to be excited to see an Indigenous character in a Marvel movie. It doesn't mean they don't love the Black characters in the movie.
As far as shipping, there's really only two choices and that's Shuri/Riri and Shuri/Namor. It's surprising that y'all are upset about Shuri/Namor, as that ship was obvious. You can dislike a ship without pretending everyone who likes it made it up based on nothing. Media literacy is understanding what a story is trying to do, and the Namor and Shuri scenes before the attack on Wakanda were trying to make you see them as a potential romance. I saw one take saying that they might possibly be switching Namor's obsession with Sue Storm into an obsession with Shuri (which is ehhhhhh and I kinda hope not, but would work with the storyline they're building).
With Riri, you get an easy ship kinda in the same grain as ScienceBros, and they are really good friends in the comics, so that ship is a pretty surefire one going forward.
I don't really like Shuri and M'Baku, but I could see it happening more than any of them in canon. I only don't like it because he reads very "older brother" with her and it would feel like an extreme left turn for them to date. But I could see the movies trying that pairing on some like... "good for Wakanda" stuff.
(Then there's Namor/M'Baku which is really funny, and I like your minds 🤣 Based on the "fish man" stuff alone.)
Anyway I'm getting off track, but basically, I think there's a lot of extreme behavior going on in the tags and I think it really boils down to this being your first introduction to Namor, because there's no reason to be angry with people for liking him. You're gonna have to get used to him, too, because he's a Problem, tm, and I fully expect him to insert himself into so many conflicts and give the Avengers grief, too. And I hope we get a main universe (I refuse to call the MCU 616) Illuminati with him and Strange and them, too.

W'Kabi seeing Okoye with Attuma after getting out of exile:
Tumblr media
For some odd reason, I feel like he would try to win her back while singing Time Machine by Muni Long outside her window, and it would be this part:
Yeah, yee, yee-hee
I wish I had a time machine
I wish I had a time machine
I wish I had a time machine
Where the f- I get a time machine?
I want a
Yeah, ah-ha, ah-ah, ah-ah
Where everyone has to look outside or come outside because he won't shut up. 😭
And I mean the man is singing with all his heart and dancing like he's in a music video with all the confidence in the world because he's a little tipsy and he starts sobbing in the end. 💀
And Okoye would be like:
Tumblr media
"If this man doesn't go home, I'm going to run my spear through him. "
and Attuma is like:
Tumblr media
"Not if I get to him first."
Meanwhile, everyone else in Wakanda is out there watching, and M'Baku puts down a chair and munches on a carrot while he watches W'Kabi fight for his life. 😭 And Aneka is recording it so Shuri can watch it. 💀
And this is canon. I don't care. 🤣😭

Okoye x Attuma
pt.2
Guerrero, a táan u kaxtik = Warrior I was looking for you
<........................................................................................................................>
After some weeks away from the Golden City, Okoye got called from M’baku and the council about her treacherous husband W’kabi.
“ Your Highness, you have called me, is W'kabi alright?”.I t had been two months and she had not received any news from her husband, and when she tried to visit him they would not allow her access.
“ Yes we want to tell, we have freed him two months ago, he’s in the United States with his wife and he’s asking for divorce” the leader of the Border Tribe M’Kathu, the room fell into silence, they were all expecting a reaction from her.
“ I’ve heard that many criminals have been given the grace, when?”
“ When what? My child” the leader continued to talk
“ When did he get married to another wife?” she asked
“ Exactly when he got released”
“ Wasn’t I enough as a wife?”
“ Okoye my child" the man tried to say something
“ I’m not you child, please answer my question I have other things to do”
“ Okoye you are the strongest warrior we have, we respect you but you are not anymore a young wife, and the border tribe need a new heir” the head of the tribe said, without making him continue she greeted the king and exited
While leaving the palace she heard her ex comrades calling her name, but the humiliation was too much, the shame was too much to stop. She was the Dora Milaje who let N’Jadaka ascend to the throne and let her husband betray and almost killed King T’Challa, and now the same husband left her because it seems she was too old to bear children. She went to the local street restaurant and bought two bottles of palm wine. She didn’t wait to go home, she opened one bottle and started to drink up all her feelings.
She didn’t care if people were looking at her, she had already lost her title as general, her honor and her husband, the alcohol was already making its effect, her head felt light and mind was cloudy, finally she came back home threw her phone on the couch and dragged herself in the backyard.
“Bhast I’ve been your most loyal servant. Is this how you repay me?” Okoye whispered opening the second bottle, she started to remove her shoes and undress , she laid on the cold floor and look at the sunset, the sky was turning orange, young maidens were leaving the river after a long day of fetching water.
Mothers were calling their children to come back home and fishermen were collecting  their last fishing net of the day and check their results, and there she was all alone almost finishing two bottle of palm wine.
She sighed, she looked at the crystal clear water for a moment and decided to dive in, at that moment she wanted the river to drag her away and take her towards the sea
The sky was still golden; she no longer heard laughter, only the humming of crickets and the distant trumpeting of elephants, and like water his mind began to flow.
"Now that traitor and I are no longer connected, we have nothing more to talk about. What a coward, he didn't even come and say it to my face. Okoye I can't be with you anymore because I find you too old to give me a child. If I want, I can have any man at the snap of my fingers" she thought, she was swimming back to the porch when suddenly she felt two hands on her hips.
"What..." she stirred, a head emerged and the woman relaxed,
"Guerrero, a táan u kaxtik"  Attuma said, they reached the porch the man turned immediately blue
"Attuma you scared me, what are you doing here?" the woman asked flustered, putting on her pants in a hurry.
"You didn't come to training today," he explained, analyzing her reactions.
"The king and the council have summoned me, I'm sorry I made you waste your time" she said sitting down wetting her feet, the man joined her.
" What is that?" he pointed to the bottle
"It contains palm wine, it's alcohol" she explained, passing him the bottle, the Talokanil looked at the bottle and then at the woman.
"Warrior, you never drink alcohol" he said confusedly, after the battle their two rulers decided that every month Attuma and other warriors would come to Wakanda to train with Wakandian warriors. The ex Dora Milaje had always said that she drank alcohol only in difficult moments.
"Are you okay? guerrero," he asked, involuntarily jerking her thighs apart
"Yes I just wanted to drink" she tried to play down the moment, without taking her gaze away, he took off his mask
“You would never drink alcohol unless you were upset.” He leaned closer, making her heart pound, she assumed it was just the alcohol and its effects.
"My husband, no ex-husband received pardon for betraying the country two months ago, he left the country with his new wife without my knowledge" she said realizing her rival's, hands were resting on her thighs
"Why did he remarry?"
"Apparently I wasn't enough to satisfy him as a wife," she kept talking, avoiding his gaze. The two were silent for a while, it wasn't awkward or uncomfortable
"He let a great woman go," he said as he sipped his drink
"How's the taste?"
"Neither sweet nor bitter, but it's pretty strong, still you shouldn't be upset about a usurper"
"I know this but, I  failed Queen Ramonda, I lost my title of general, and now to top it all off my husband who tried to usurp the throne is leaving me for a woman younger than me only because I probably can't give him a son"
She said trying to get up, but slipped and ended up in the water.
"I'm a lost case" she whispered to herself, the man looked at her and dived, he took her hips, they were about to go back up but she stopped
"Wait I want to stay like this a little longer" she said as she gripped his arms, their foreheads touching.
"It's his loss, not yours. I'd be honored to be your husband," he whispered into her ear, she sneezed.
"If we continue like this you'll catch a cold" she reached the door of her house
"I don't think I'll be coming to practice tomorrow," she said
"All right" and he dived, leaving the warrior alone.
She went home, changed and lay down in bed, trying to forget what had just happened. She couldn't, she couldn't forget how close they were, and she wished his hands had held her tighter. That night she had promised herself that she would never drink palm wine again.

Wakanda Forever, second viewing
Here are some things I'd like to discuss
-- The parallel between Ramonda's speech at the UN when she says "now is our time to strike" putting words in the mouth of the US and France, compared to when Shuri says "now is our time to strike" about Talokan.
-- Okoye's "we are home" to Ramonda just like she said to T'Challa in the first film. I said out loud, "This never gets old." People looked at me funny.
-- How Ramonda is trying to get Shuri to go back to research on the Heart-Shaped Herb. I think she is trying to get Shuri ready to be the Black Panther, and trying to get her to do the emotional work necessary, but it's so sad that it's only her death that makes Shuri go back to it.
-- Okoye calling MIT the equivalent of a "Wakandan village school." I'm never going to get to go to Wakanda, guys, I got rejected from all but my state school. Ack.
-- Both Ramonda and Shuri seem to see Nakia as almost kin to them. They both go to her when they feel totally alone (Ramonda after Shuri is kidnapped and Shuri at the end).
-- Namor's description of his childhood is kind of scary. People thought he was a god since he was a child? No one seems to be providing any sort of parental guidance after his mother passes. I think he's gonna need all the therapy.
-- I notice all of the Talokanil drink their blue herb (it's like the Heart-Shaped Herb but all I don't know the name, just that it's blue not purple), and then seem to pass out or pass away. I wonder if they go to their version of the ancestral plane? We don't see it but it seems to be put there for a reason. Wakanda is powerful but it's not like all its citizens take the Heart-Shaped Herb. Only the Panther. They really can't survive a war with Talokan, unless Shuri starts growing a LOT more of those Herbs.
-- Disturbing to see how planned the attack on Ramonda is. The Talokanil draw defenses (Ayo) away from the Throne Room specifically so Namor can kill her, and she seems to know it because she tries to make Riri leave. (Angela Bassett's face when Dominique Thorne askes if she can call her mom!) And then Namor waits there, while Ramonda drowns, to tell Shuri she is Queen now.
-- Is Killmonger's sweater the same one he wears in BP1 just in white not black? I love the detail on these things. He doesn't seem to understand why Ramonda died for a girl from the "Lost Tribe" when T'Chaka killed his own brother. And I'm like, "Cuz Ramonda was fucking great, that's why."
-- I do wish Angela Bassett got some fight scenes. I'm an iffy on her white wig and usually I love the hair in BP movies compared to the terrible, terrible wigs in most MCU projects.
-- I want to talk more about Ayo being the General of the dora milaje now!! When Okoye is there, she wears the gold adornments, and after, it is Ayo who has gold. so clearly she got promoted in Okoye's absence. But how does she feel about that? Aneka seems to have left the dora also. What is that relationship like? Guys, I need more. I feel like there was more Aneka that was cut, because all we see of her leaving the dora is her giving those daggers back to Shuri?
-- I wrote a whole post about the parallels to the Challenge Day from BP1 and this film and didn't notice Shuri quotes M'Baku's line from BP1, "Your technological advancements have been overseen by a child" back to him and that's what prompts the line about her not being a child anymore. Sob.
-- I would be interested in a post about Shuri's hair journey. There's definitely an evolution from the first scene to the last.
-- Namora is such a badass. She takes a blast right in the chest from Riri and is not deterred in the slightest. I think she's neat.
-- Ryan Coogler said W'Kabi is in exile, but where do we think he went exactly? Ramonda suggests somewhere Okoye can visit. I wonder if they are trying to make it work still. She is very loyal, I guess. Usually putting a spear to your husband's throat ends a marriage.
-- Griot addresses Shuri as "princess" but in the scene where she says goodbye to Riri he calls her "Panther". She levelled up.

Canon Details in Black Panther that people forget:
T’Chaka watched Back To The Future 2 a lot
Everett is divorced (deleted scene)
T’Challa and Nakia are childhood friends (deleted scene)
Ramonda considers Nakia to be a suitable person to take the Herb.
The Jabari are vegetarians, but some of them make an exception for fish.
The only time T’Challa takes off his kimoyo beads is when he fights at the waterfall. Otherwise, it’s only War Dogs who don’t wear it (openly) while they’re on their missions.
W’Kabi’s Rhinos eat apples/peaches

Black Panther AU where T'Challa is sometimes possessed by Bast.
While the royal family always held a special connection to Bast, T'Chaka and Ramonda noticed early on how attuned T'Challa was to everything Bast.
He was focused in everything he did but when it came to things related to Bast or the mantle of the Black Panther, he would pay special attention. He would study the Heart-Shaped Herb, rituals to do with Bast and all that kinda stuff.
They're not really worried cause who wouldn't want the future King to be interested in their culture? Sure they have to stop him from trying to adopt every cat (especially black ones) he sees, even if he says " it's what Bast declares mother!" but everyone's kids are like that.
It's not until T'Challa is 12 years old and 2 year old Shuri (idk their canonical age difference so i'm gonna say it's 10-ish years) when she accidentally spills cold water on him and his eyes glow purple as he hisses, that they realize that maybe T'Challa isn't a normal child.
Ramonda: honey did you just hiss?
T'Challa: Bast doesn't like the cold :(
Ramonda: ....
Ramonda and T'Chaka try and keep it on the down low because while the Wakandan people worship Bast, they don't know how they'll take their prince being possessed by her. It's hard for them to do that when Bast takes over at any moment and T'Challa doesn't care about stopping her.
He'll be sneaking into the kitchen to grab extra snacks, see a cucumber and jump 6ft in the air. Head pats will always get him smiling and the smell of citrus makes him want to rip his nose off (mood).
15yr old W'Kabi and Nakia watching 14yr old T'Challa curl up on a brightly lit rock and start purring: hmmm something's weird abt him but i can't put my finger on it 🤔
She's like a comforting presence to T'Challa. She doesn't usually speak but feelings are transmitted so he understands anyway.
So T'Challa grows up hearing Bast's voice in his head and sometimes being possessed by her. She's like a weird aunt or older sister. To the Wakandans their Prince is weird but he's theirs so it's all cool.

W’Kabi can never be redeemed.
So, I’ve been rewatching Black Panther 1 to work on a fanfic and every time I see W’Kabi I just want to throw hands. This man really abandoned his best friend because a stranger walked in with his enemy’s head. Theeeeen he had the audacity to go against Okoye’s wishes time after time after time. 💀
I’m probably super late to the party on this one- but I ended up digging around on reddit to understand why tf this man was such an awful friend to T’Challa. Like dude was literally king for maybe a week. He almost brought Klaw back to Wakanda. T’Challa only needed a little more time... or even another opportunity to get Klaw. But no. W’Kabi just had to throw a hissy fit, as if his parents were the only ones that died when Klaw infiltrated Wakanda. AS IF KILLMONGER’S DAD ISN’T THE REASON THEY’RE DEAD TO BEGIN WITH. (But that’s none of my business. 🐸☕) AS IF KILLMONGER WASN’T THE ONE THAT BROKE KLAW OUT OF PRISON. (again, that’s none of my business. 🐸☕)
This man was really smiling as his BEST FRIEND got the paint, sonic rings, and mario coins beat off of him and tossed over a waterfall to his supposed death. AND THEN proceeded to eagerly try to kill him so that N’Jadaka could succeed in sending out weapons. Even though Okoye told him not to. Even after T’Challa asked him to stop.
Tumblr media
W’Kabi was the main villain of the film. I don’t care. I don’t care.
Anyways, I NEEDED TO KNOW WHYYYY- and a brilliant soul dropped this link on the reddit post of a deleted scene:
This is the link
and after watching it- oooooooooooooooh. The way I wanted to bonk him upside the head. I swear to the moon and back- this is why nobody remembered Okoye was married to his trifling ass. 😭
I’m happy she crossed paths with Attuma. They had more chemistry trying to kill each other anyways. 😭 W’Kabi can keep his ol’ dusty forehead kiss and shove it.
OKOYE DESERVES HER FLOWERS!
p.s. No hate to the actor who plays W’Kabi. He acted up and down this movie with the rest of the cast. Everyone was and is super talented. I wish they hadn’t cut this scene out because it adds so much more to why W’Kabi didn’t even think twice about supporting N’Jadaka. I’m just looking at the characters and their story.

Again, I have to credit Black Panther's efficient storytelling with W'Kabi and the Border Tribe. W'Kabi is a problem. Like. He's easily likable because he has great charisma and sympathetic pathos. His job is to defend Wakanda's border from outsiders, and his parents were killed in the bombing when Klaue first stole from Wakanda.
The film, up to this point, has been playing up Klaue like he's going to be the film's big villain. He's back with this new vibranium super-arm and we need to get him. It's not hard to imagine a hypothetical version of the movie where Klaue gets more vibranium upgrades and we have a big punch-up with him to reclaim everything he's stolen.
In fact, when I said the story of BP feels like a sequel plot, it's easy to imagine Klaue as the simple and uncomplicated bad guy for an establishing film.
But that's the trick. We're not here to have a simple and uncomplicated punch-up with a bad guy. We're here to talk politics. And politically, W'Kabi is full of red flags that are going to have their day in the sun once Killmonger rolls in.
Like. This dude literally offers to wage a military campaign of conquest against the outside world. Puts that right there on the table. It's easy to overlook because it's framed as, "This is what I would do if you ordered it, my king." But. Like. This dude seriously advocated for that as an alternative to Nakia's desired outreach programs. Maybe this dude is not a good advisor for sound international policy!
You know the guy? The general in every American sci-fi movie. Secretary of Defense or whatever. The one who's like, "I think we should just fire nukes at the aliens. Oh, they come in peace? Cool. More nukes." That's W'Kabi. Standing here like, "Nakia wants to improve people's lives? Cool. Let's round up our armies and go expand our borders!"
"If you let in refugees, they'll just bring their problems with them." Where have I heard that before? That's not even political metaphor, it's just politics. This guy is just politics. The film wears its politics on its sleeve, unafraid to have characters literally discuss the subject matter directly. It's so good.
