ATEEZ as Benders
Masterlist | A/N: A glimpse into each member and their roles in my upcoming ATLA-inspired, Wooyoung x reader fic for the second part of my title track series. Will most likely end up writing a fic for each member and turning this into a sub-series of its own. Let me know what you think! Edit: As of 11/11/23, this has been turned into a series. Check out the masterlist here.
Hongjoong
Tumblr media
Element: Fire
Occupation: Diplomat, Strategist
Personality: Intense, strong-willed, passionate, loyal, creative, intelligent, charismatic
Fun Fact: Hongjoong, despite being young, has become one of the government officials with the best reputation. He is incredibly persuasive and cunning, and he uses his skills to enact the will of the people and do his best for the good of the Fire Nation. He has a lot of secret admirers, often finding chocolates and other gifts in his office, but don't mention that to him or he'll get shy.
Seonghwa
Tumblr media
Element: Water
Occupation: Artisan
Personality: Sensitive, nurturing, perfectionist, reliable, open-minded, adaptable, empathetic
Fun Fact: Seonghwa is known to make some of the most beautiful carvings and jewelry in the entire Water Tribe. All benders, no matter what nation they're from, would love to own one of his pieces. But secretly, he loves to make toys for kids to play with and prefers that to his main job.
Yunho
Tumblr media
Element: Air
Occupation: Acrobat
Personality: Jovial, spontaneous, free-spirited, romantic, kind, helpful
Fun Fact: Yunho often tours the four nations with his troupe, and his solo act has become a favorite amongst children and adults alike. What makes his routine even more impressive is that he has an incredible mastery over his bending, and performs without ever touching the ground. Incredibly charismatic and entrancing to watch, his performance will capture both your attention and your heart.
Yeosang
Tumblr media
Element: Air
Occupation: Meditative Guide
Personality: Unique, endearing, positive, dreamy, free-spirited, peaceful
Fun Fact: People often find Yeosang to be in his own world, a step or two behind everyone else. It makes it hard to believe that he's one of the best meditative guides hailing from the Air Nomads, helping troubled souls find their inner peace through deep and intense focus. Truthfully, he's aware of everything that's going on but only likes to pay attention to the things that really matter to him.
San
Tumblr media
Element: Fire
Occupation: Firebending Instructor, Tactician
Personality: Passionate, unpredictable, alluring, strong-willed, independent, principled
Fun Fact: San is one of the best firebenders in the nation, having mastered the technique of blue lightning. People would pay unspeakable amounts of money to be taught by him, but he only teaches those without the means to compensate him, dedicating his time to the underprivileged. He gives free classes at the orphanage his father runs, while he gets his money from the government, advising military leaders on the most effective ways to deploy firebenders and utilize their bending skills in combat.
Mingi
Tumblr media
Element: Earth
Occupation: Architect
Personality: Patient, conciliatory, persistent, logical, diligent, complex, gentle
Fun Fact: Mingi loves creating things, but he also finds himself wanting to leave a positive impact on the people and environments around him. That's why, when designing any sort of structure, he taps into the vibrations of the earth, seeking its guidance to foster a harmonious connection between the building and its surroundings. He believes that humans and the earth can live together in harmony, strengthening and taking care of one another.
Wooyoung
Tumblr media
Element: Water
Occupation: Healer
Personality: Enigmatic, sensitive, giving, comforting, loving, altruistic, committed
Fun Fact: Wooyoung has mastered a unique form of healing that he calls "Wavesong" where, through singing and dancing, he can project vibrations through water that promote healing within wounded individuals, allowing him to help not only their bodies but their minds. People believe this is because he is moon-blessed, a child born under the Siren Moon that only rises once every 88 years. Wooyoung lets them believe that, not wanting to reveal that his true "blessing" is having prophetic dreams that tend to get him in more trouble than they're worth.
Jongho
Tumblr media
Element: Fire
Occupation: Ceremonial Performer
Personality: Courageous, idealistic, adventurous, passionate, independent, powerful, dynamic
Fun Fact: When Jongho isn't participating in a ceremony or ritual, he often busks on the streets of the capital, entertaining passersby for fun. If you manage to see him, either in an official or unofficial capacity, you should consider yourself lucky. Whether it's due to his bending or simply his natural talent, his voice seems to imbue the listener with a feeling of warmth and a nostalgic longing for home.

Taking out the trash
**warning mention of torture**
Nobody could ever know. It was a good thing that the staff of Babyls was very capable. Not a single soul outside of the room would know the truth about what happened today.
Especially not sweet innocent Iruma. He would just continue living in hell, unaware of what transpired. He must never know the truth.
He will just continue to believe that he is somewhere far away from his parents. He will continue to think that they will never reach him again. Blissfully ignorant of their attempt.
Yes, it was better this way. There is no need for him to know that the slimly pathetic excuses of living beings wanted him back. No need to say they had summoned Lord Sullivan again trying to make a new deal.
They would forever keep this encounter a secret. After all... nobody would miss two pieces of pondscum that have never been mentioned before. It wouldn't even be a cause to blink.
One can't miss something that was never there in the first place. Iruma was too soft still. Even if he was becoming more greedy and demonic by the day. There was worry he would instantly forgive them out of habit.
No, there would be no forgiveness for these two. Not for being a threat to one of the school's precious students. There was only pain.
So it might have lasted a while, prolonging the suffering of two disgusting bugs. But there was a lot of venting that occurred.
So what if Dali-San used experimental potions on them? Or that Suzy-San kept them in thorny vines? It was a great way to keep them still as Robin-San used them for target practice.
What did it matter if Shichiro-San recorded the pain tolerance of their nervous system while March-San used every torture method known to demon? Or if Kalego-San had his Ceberus use them as a chew toy?
After all, they could always be healed just enough to keep them alive. That is one of the reasons they have a great healer like Buer Blushenko on their staff.
No... it was something the entire staff participated in as a whole. No matter the screams or the smell. No matter the desperate pleads, they were not swayed.
Of course, there was also the matter of their souls. None of the staff were willing to eat that garbage, but they couldn't let it float around freely. Who knows where they could end up.
So even the two humans' souls had no peace. They were burned to a crisp by Ifrit-san's bloodline magic. Yes, truly, this had been something that had lasted for days before they put an end to it. They did have classes to teach.

Snippet 11 - Quiet Understanding
All the credit to NewFallenLeaves on A03 for this writing!!@ Shes such an angel I love her go support her
There's lots of tism in this one yall will love it
Tumblr media
Snippet below the cut!!!⬇️⬇️⬇️
The next time one of the youngest bunny siblings traipsed into Donnie’s lab, it was not at all within the parameters of any scenario that he had anticipated.
Mari came slinking in so quietly, even his sensitive hearing aids almost failed to pick up the sound. Her padded steps were so soft and careful, it was as if she didn’t even want to hear her own footfalls. He could even go so far as to say that she was as silent as any ninja, although Donnie knew the Miyamoto clan had no training in that style.
When his sensors did pick up on her presence, she was almost already right behind him.
He swiveled in his chair abruptly. She froze mid-stride. Her ears were trembling and her eyes were rimmed with red.
He knew practically nothing about the younger bunny twin, due to the fact that he hardly interacted with her. With minimal data, all he could tell for sure was that she was extraordinarily introverted, and for some reason enjoyed Raph’s tea parties. Why she would be coming to him unannounced, he had no idea.
“What’s the matter with you?” Donnie asked.
“You’re not sick,” said Donnie.
He tugged his goggles down over his eyes and activated a quick scan. It revealed an elevated heart rate, minor congestion in her sinuses, and some light inflammation in her corneas. Nothing that indicated illness.
Apparently, that was the wrong thing to say. Her eyes welled, and she swiped them with the heel of her hand. “Yes I am. I need something…to fix me.”
“Fix what?”
“You make potions like mystics, right? Ishi-nii-san said so. And you made him better.”
Donnie resisted the urge to criticize her comparison of his science to the backward mysticism her culture subscribed to. “Your brother has quantifiable symptoms that can be tempered with the right admixture of medications. But I can’t create medicine for vague or nonexistent problems, so if you want something, explain it properly.”
She hesitated, and for a moment looked as if she might just turn and leave. Instead she said, slowly, “Riko was humming again. And when I told her to stop she got mad and called me stupid again.”
Donnie cocked an eyebrow. “It’s not stupid to ask someone else to allay their noise pollution.”
“But only simple people have to have quiet to concentrate. I’m not supposed to get so annoyed when Riko sings or makes noise.” Mari twisted the lacing on her tunic between her fingers. “Usually I don’t mind too much, but…today I was mean and I asked her to be quiet anyway.”
Donnie cocked an eyebrow. “Why is that mean?”
“Because she wasn’t even very loud like she is sometimes. But it still made my ears hurt and my head fuzzy and my tummy all shaky.”
“Oh. That.” Donnie swiveled the goggles back up to the top of his head.
“Can you make it better?”
“Of course not.”
He spoke little too quickly and bluntly, based on the absolutely crestfallen look that overtook her.
Donnie added, “But only because there’s nothing to fix. Aversion to auditory stimulation isn’t an illness that you take medicine for.”
He knew what it was like to feel overstimulated. And he’d read enough medical journals to understand sensory issues and how to handle them. It didn’t mean that Mari was deficient, just that she was more sensitive than most. She needed quiet and privacy more than noise and social interaction.
He watched as her eyes began to fill again. Oh, Hawking. Of course no one had ever explained this to her. From what he heard, the clan’s so-called ‘healers’ hadn’t even bothered to treat Usagi’s wounds when he was a child for fear it would hinder the mystic tattoos. With that level of incompetence, Donnie was surprised him and his siblings had survived for as long as they did.
“Auditory hypersensitivity isn’t uncommon,” said Donnie. “Adaptability is optimal in someone your age, and it’s just a matter of mitigating the stimulation to a tolerable level and practicing coping strategies for moments when extenuation is impossible.”
Mari blinked.
Donnie sighed. “Your body doesn’t like loud noises. That’s okay. You’re not sick, and you’re not stupid.”
“But Riko likes loud noises. And being busy. And being around lots of other people all the time…”
“So?” said Donnie. “Twins can be different.”
Her face fell, and he wondered what the problem was. He and Leo had never really been alike. He'd thought that sort of thing when it came to siblings and twins was obvious.
“Here.” Donnie tugged the headset loose from around his ears and plopped them onto her head. One quick twist adjusted the headband and tucked the speakers in close to her ears.
In true Donnie fashion, he hadn’t been able to resist enhancing his hearings aids to adjust volume and filter background noises. He spun the dial to what was essentially a ‘sound-canceling’ setting, and the fins retracted. (Strange to have that option for someone who was nearly deaf, but versatility was inestimable.)
Mari’s eyes widened.
“Quieter, right?” asked Donnie.
She nodded.
Donnie tapped a button that would emit a low wash of white noise. He watched with satisfaction as Mari’s shoulders relaxed and the faintest of smiles threatened to break through.
“Better?” Donnie couldn’t hear his own voice, much less her answer, but he could easily surmise what her vigorous nod meant.
“Stay here where I can see you.” He pointed to a nearby stool. “And if you break those I will make myself new ones out of your ears.”
She smiled and nodded again. Probably couldn’t hear a word he was saying. Perfect.
He turned back to his desk and flipped to a blank page in his sketchbook to begin the basic design. It wasn’t a staggering challenge, but recreating his tech to fit a rabbit yokai and grow with her would provide an interesting afternoon project. It should occupy him for a few hours, at least, and the way Mari immediately hopped onto the nearest swiveling stool and snagged a book on the evolutionary processes of insects told him she could entertain herself quietly for however long it took.
He would make hers smaller and lighter, of course. Fitted so they wouldn’t even be noticeable once they were in place, hidden under the tufts of fur around her ears.
He didn’t bother to ask what color she wanted.
How fortuitous that she already wore purple.

Hello! I am just starting my journey on reconnecting with my traditional roots as an Italian practitioner. My great grandparents came from Italy in the mid 1900s, but unfortunately passed before I had the pleasure of asking about their practices. Can I ask a good starting point for someone who is trying to reconnect all on her own?
Hello!
I am so happy that you are wanting to reconnect with your roots! I'm sorry you didn't get the opportunity to ask your grandparents, my deepest condolences for your loss.
In terms of resources, my recommendation for anyone starting out is to go to folklore sources or to read books by authors who don't simply reference other witchcraft authors. I highly recommend reading Italian Folk Magic: Rue's Kitchen Witchery by Mary-Grace Fahrun. It's mostly her personal experience with Italian folk-Catholicism and magic with plenty of anecdotes, recipes, superstitions, and various rituals. I think it's probably the best widely available source out there. She also has a youtube channel! In a similar vein, the website Italian Folk Magic has some great posts about Southern Italian and Sicilian magic.
Other online resources I've found useful are Gail Faith Edwards' writings on Southern Italian healers and folk medicine (it's split into 2 parts–– there's a lot of great information if you're into herbalism/ green witchcraft). I also love this article detailing witchcraft history, superstition, and more throughout Italy. It goes into a lot of detail and has some information about herbal properties and their uses as well.
Here are some festivals and traditions from across Italy tied to folk belief: Focara of Novoli, The Campanacci in Basilicata, The Feast of San Domenico and the Ritual of Serpari of Cocullo, Naca Procession in Southern Italy, Dance of the Devils, Celebration of Santa Lucia, The Feast of Mamma Schiavona––There are many others (mostly Saint feasts) that have pre-Christian roots or have significant rituals attached.
Most information that I have collected comes from anthropological and folklore sources that aren't very accessible. There are some videos available of documentary footage of Italian anthropologist Ernesto de Martino's work detailing folk tradition: here's a clip of La Taranta. This documentary isn't in English, however you can still get a lot out of it even if you don't speak Italian (unfortunately there are no subtitles). The documentarian that worked with de Martino, Luigi Di Gianni gives some of his recollections here. Here is a clip documenting the Feast of Mamma Schiavona. Otherwise, everything else is behind a paywall on sites like jstor, sagepub, and other academic publishers. I would recommend reading anything by anthropologist and folklorist Sabina Magliocco (I have copies of her work), as well as de Martino's Magic: A Theory from the South (which I also have a pdf of). The academic texts can be a little dense and daunting, but they're worth the read.
I have uploaded some of what I have to WeTransfer, but it will only be up for 1 week (until July 10th) so if anyone else would like to download them, you can for a limited time!

How about your grillbys personalities and/ or anyone they can’t get along with.
This is my first time seeing ur fire boys so I’m very curious
Sure! This was fun to write, thank you for the ask :)
Grillby: A quiet monster that does as he is told and nothing more, nothing less. He enjoys working and dislikes it when people try to get out of paying for the stuff that they owe him. (Sans, mostly) He fought in the monster vs. human war and lost a lot of friends during that. He never exactly forgave humans, but he is trying his best to get over his hate for them because he knows that these guys probably don't even remember the war. He's very kind, even if he doesn't act like it at times.
Inferno: Shockingly a lot nicer than he acts, even if he acts like an asshole. He knows that he has to. His bar is a safe zone; nobody is allowed to fight in there, and if they do, they’ll get kicked out and banned. He respects the king and cares for Red; even if he isn’t exactly sure WHY he does, he just does. He makes his own drinks and enjoys seeing people try them for the first time—he likes to see their reactions. Of course he could lose his temper, and if somebody tried anything in his bar, they would see the danger of an out-of-control flame. He, too, fought in the war, but not as you may expect. Inferno was in the healer pack! He only fought when he was forced to.
Hearth: Hearth is a pink fire monster who lives in the ruins! He’s unable to leave, and even if he could, he doesn’t exactly want to. He works with his little flares to sell baked goods to every monster in the ruins! He loves money, hates sharing things, and finds the idea of friendship with other monsters strange… Unlike his counterparts, this one didn’t fight in the war. He’s way too young to have done that! He sometimes gives people things for free, but only once, and he tells them to give out some papers.
Flare: He is a pretty nice fire monster who also lives in the ruins. He hates seeing how everyone is so mad and upset all the time, so he's selling treats that help him feel better! Yeah, they're gonna get you high or drunk. Plus, the food heals a lot! He's a very popular monster in the ruins. A lot of the monsters know that if they tried to fight him, they would have to deal with his anger as well as that of other monsters, so he's normally left alone. Flare enjoys meeting new monsters but dislikes humans because of how they're mostly water. He thinks that that means he would get hurt if he touched them. He's not very smart. (he dislikes the queen a lot because he gets along fairly well with this goat dude who talks about her a lot)
Coal: Coal is a sad fire monster that doesn't get out very often. He has to be around something that would power him up at times, mostly stoves, but sometimes he carries around pieces of coal so he could eat that and be prepared to walk around if he has to leave the house. Because of how low his magic level is, he really can't keep up the big form all that often and normally has to be smaller to save magic levels. He doesn't hate humans for what happened to him, but he regrets having ever met them, and he still believes that monsters should have won that war or that they should have killed Frisk. Coal often looks back on the 'good' times and will share stories with anyone who will listen.
Embers: He dislikes anyone who doesn't eat healthy! He doesn't get why people wouldn't do that when healthy food can taste good and be good for you! He often sells his stuff at a... good price and talks about the health benefits that you would get from it! What he doesn't tell people is that sometimes he likes a few unhealthy foods himself. He'll sneak himself some coal at some points, but he never tells anyone because it embarrasses him a lot. He hates Alpha from all the stories and will try to kill him whenever they see each other. Alpha normally treats it like a joke. King loves Embers food, though! Embers, like the other swaps, didn't fight in the war, even if he did hear about it. He tries to ignore it.
Blaze: He is the one you need to know if you want to know anything going on in the mafia world. He works with food, sure, but every mafia member that is worth their scrap knows him. He knows pretty much everything about everyone and everything, and if you want to know, you'll have to pay him... he's laying on a pretty big pile of gold, but money doesn't really matter too much to him; he is more or less doing this because it interests him. Nobody really knows anything about Blaze; they just know that he knows stuff, and you don't want to get on his bad side...
Phoenix: He changes with his emotions! All of his colors, I mean. He is very colorful, and everyone loves his ice cream as well as seeing what pretty color he would be that day. He's very shy and quiet and dislikes too much attention on himself, so it's embarrassing lol. He makes his own ice cream with his own secrets! Like Dark Matter Double Chocolate, Meteor Shower Marshmallow, Cosmic Cotton Candy Cloud, or even his favorite Orion's Orange Dream. A strange thing about him is that he's not hot; he's very cold! That's why the ice cream doesn't melt when he's around it, and instead of getting hotter when he's mad, he gets even colder. It can be very dangerous if you're not careful!
Flash: Flash is a kind, caring fire monster who loves to help take care of animals and plants. He sells mostly seeds and feed for the animals that you need to take care of. He'll help you pick what's best for your animals, all while making jokes. He loves puns, and that's why he and Corn get along so well! Course Flash does dislike some stuff, and it's normally when people try to get a deal outta him. He feels like it's such an asshole thing to do to bug him about getting a deal instead of just buying the feed for your animals. Sometimes, if you have a good reason, he'll give you a nice deal, but only if you have a good reason.
Pyre: Just like Coal, Pyre cannot get too far away from things that would heat him up and give him power. Because of that, whenever he doesn't want to leave the house, he's often found in the stove with it on to heat him up. It helps a bit, and he's waiting for the day that he can be fixed! They're all looking for a way to give him some extra magic, even if they don't have a lot to spare themselves. Even with that, Pyre isn't the meanest monster. I mean, sometimes he can be rude, but that's just because he's hurting. He enjoys when people stop to talk to him, even if he doesn't act like it.
Lava: Lava is passionate and fiery, even if sometimes he doesn't act like it. He's full of intense emotions that he cannot show all the time. He's very adventurous and loves to seek new experiences! Even sometimes leaving his underwater volcano home... even if sometimes he leaves, he's very protective of the place that he calls his own and refuses to let most others get close unless he feels like he can trust them... he has a strange mysterious aura around him since, well, not many people know of him at all! Not a lot of creatures can get near the heat of the lava, so he's normally left alone.
Asmodeus: He knows that he's a very pretty and attractive monster. Fire monsters are rare, and a lot of the others think that he would be a perfect fuck buddy, but what they don't know is that he doesn't like doing it! Not at all. He's more or less the owner of the dancing club where people come to watch or to dance. He protects his dancers no matter what, and he will throw people out if he thinks that they're getting out of hand. Love doesn't interest him at all, and he thinks the idea of it is stupid... Now, does he really think that, or is it something he's telling himself? Who knows... Not even he does, honestly. He and Lover get along really well! More often than not, they spend more time with each other than any other monster duo. A lot of people think they're fuck buddies, though, funnily enough, they really aren't. They just... chat.

My brain had a thought;
Originally, I had an idea that my Swapfell Red Papyrus, Russ, had a second/secret ability in his Soul that causes him to use too much magic, issuing in his tired look all the time- To the point his eye sockets are so grey and he looks so disheveled and far too weak for what he was originally created for.
I had wanted Kindness to be the main base of this whole world of mine. To have Russ be a secret healer himself, but it drains his life force.
But the more I thought about it, the more it; Wouldn't make sense AND there would be too much of that theme to be around anyways...
Gaster is a deep green; Star is a pure green; The darker the green, the more corrupted a being is. Star is to be the purest human while Gaster has the most vile. The color Green is the rarest form in this world- No matter the hue.
Gaster wouldn't dare ruin his experiment with adding Kindness, however; Perhaps an equal amount that would help regenerate his subject, but nothing to mess it up by straight on giving Kindness, a thing which would drastically cause the opposite affect of making a Killing monster to impress the Queen and get made to be the Royal Scientist.
My brain had a thought of; Doing simple. If Orange is Bravery, that easily turns into Cowardly if the magic dims and becomes dark. And as you know, Russ is a Dark Orange... He should be more anxious, nervous, more fearful; But all through being in this Fandom, I've drawn and written him as this being who won't step down, who tests the waters, can be an ass; Yet with a goofy personality with a high desire just to fit in somewhere and enjoy life. He does have his moments that i have yet to touch up or show; He does have hard anxiety and the likes listed; But one cannot show such weakness in their realm...
Perhaps, the second trait of his would be Determination... The red that easily can turn into a Rage. Would give him a better ability to never stop, never give up, to keep going despite being so close to death like I've written in Training Gone Wrong-- Makes so much more sense.
A lot of things and traits will have to be reformed; Creating is so fascinating and always such a wonderful thing.
And his brother, SF Sans or Regal, was originally a muted hue of Navy Blue- A deep and corrupted color- But I'm playing with the idea that; Maybe... If a Human can change their traits, why not a Monster?...
Pereserverence sounds right up his alley; Even if he isn't a Judge type...

He's Just a Herald and He's On Fire!
Tumblr media
So, if there is one consistent theme with protagonists in Mercedes Lackey's Valdemar universe, it's that there is a STARTLING number of them who are misfits in their families, misunderstood, and a little anxious and melancholic about the whole thing. You'd think that this would get boring fast, but Lackey manages to mix up the details enough that they don't meld together in my head, and in point of fact, I have actual favorites. One of whom we are talking about today. That's what this post is for. Lan Chitward is one of my favorite herald protagonists. Let's talk Brightly Burning.
Hi, hello, welcome. If this is your first time on my blog, please be warned that this is A SPOILERIFIC ZONE. I will SPOIL THE CRAP OUT OF THIS BOOK. Consider yourself warned.
Y'all, I am a Shakespeare scholar, so if I ever post anything along the lines of "Tragedies suck and I hate them," please send help, I've been kidnapped. Your girl LOVES a good tragedy, and that's really what this book is: An Amazing Tragedy. But that's just the end for Herald Lavan Firestorm and his Companion Kalira.
At the beginning of this book, we meet Lavan "Lan" Chitward, ugly ducking son of a pair of extremely prosperous merchants who feels ignored, misunderstood, and transplanted from the place that made him happiest. Kiddo has zero desire to follow either of his parents into their trades, so when they hit their wits' ends, said parents send Lan to a merchant-run school so Lan can find himself a direction in life that he feels will suit him.
Lan's parents might not be able to empathize or communicate with their son, but they did try to set him up for success. They tried. They get a couple of points for that. Not a lot. But a couple.
Unfortunately for Lan, he gets to discover the downsides of private school firsthand when he is relentlessly and cruelly bullied by older students. Lan's anxiety and very real, rational fear of bodily and social harm get so bad that to save his life, his Firestarting Gift explodes out of his control. By the time the smoke clears, four boys are dead and Lan is being carted up to the palace to explain to Herald Pol what on earth had been happening in his school and how the fire started. Stress from being questioned makes Lan lose control again, but before he can start a second killer fire, Kalira chooses Lan. Handily, Kalira is the daughter of Pol's companion, Satiran, so Pol is aware from the jump that Lan is more than just Kalira's Choice: The two are lifebonded.
Go nuts, Ao3.
However, this is about when the members of the heraldic circle start looking at each other sideways and going, "oh no. Firestarting Gifts usually only pop up when we're going to need them..." So while Lan is getting tutored by Pol, Kalira, his new best friend Tuck, and Pol's daughter Eleanor, Karse is causing trouble at the border--like preparing to invade and burn all the heralds to death trouble. Karse is not your friend, and their sun priests tend to target heralds and healers, and the only thing worse than being killed by Karsite troops is being taken alive to be burned at the stake or--for healers--be forced to use your gift until you burn out and die. So: Bad Situation.
Ultimately, the command decision is made to send Lan to the front. Lan at this point is an emotionally unstable, half-trained at best trainee herald. The poor kid is getting yeeted into a situation he is absolutely unprepared to handle. Before he and Pol even MAKE it to the front, they're attacked by a scout group and Pol is blinded--put a pin in that, we're going to come back to it. So Lan gets to the front already traumatized and somewhat sans his trusted mentor. It's not good.
Ultimately, the title of this book comes back to haunt Lan and Kalira: they burn, too brightly. Kalira takes an arrow in battle to save Lan, and in his grief and rage, Lan unleashes his final strike, taking out the Karsite army, an entire pine forest, and even some of his own soldiers--firestorms are hard to aim. Lan is posthumously raised to full Herald rank, and losing their entire army puts Karse on the shelf. It's the very definition of a pyrrhic victory, however. Lan burned himself out at age sixteen. He was a half-trained child doing his level best, and he was put in a situation that he was objectively unready for. It's heartbreaking, it's tragic...it's WONDERFULLY done.
The entire time you're reading this book and falling in love with Lan and Kalira, you're thinking "they'll be alright, won't they? They have to be alright." But you have enough other beloved characters that you get to know well enough that you also get to mourn with them once Lan and Kalira are gone. You get pulled into this story and you just want to hug Lan and stick him somewhere safe. This is one of my favorite Valdemar books, no question.
This is where I want to just briefly come back to Herald Pol and the attack that costs him his sight. I have no objection about the context in which this occurs. Shit happens in war. It's tragic, it's traumatic, it COMPLETELY SUCKS, but there aren't any red flags in terms of how Pol is disabled. There is also a fairly realistic period in which Pol is trying to adjust to not having sight. He also can see through Satiran's eyes for short periods of time because magic, but since this comes with a cost in energy and magic and doesn't inherently negate the disability, we're still fine. It's an emergency stopgap measure, not a functional cure. So far, so fine.
Unfortunately, there are a couple of things I don't love about how Pol's blinding is handled. The first thing is a bit "your mileage may vary" rather than a genuinely harmful negative representation, but it threw up a faint red flag when I was reading, so I'm talking about it. Traumatic injuries are so described for a reason; people have very very valid feelings and reactions to being suddenly and violently disabled, and part of adjusting is having the time and space to work through those feelings. Now. Pol and Lan are literally in a war zone, they are indispensably important figures, so they can't just be sent home. There also kind of isn't time and space to deal with the emotions in a war zone. All of that is fair enough. It would suck to have to just swallow the feels and keep functioning, and that could even lead to some good narrative tension.
That's not what happens though.
I'll just give you the text from the book for this bit:
Some time during the ride to headquarters, Pol had made up his mind on several points; it had given him relief from the pain to work things logically through in that way. Losing his eyesight was not going to be a tragedy, and if Ilea could not Heal him, then he would simply accept that. The events of the evening only confirmed that belief. He worked through everything as logically as he could during the ride, and during that night and the day and night that followed, in his dreams he was able to employ a technique called directed dreaming to work through things emotionally. It wasn't easy; he exhausted himself all over again, weeping for what he had lost and raging against everyone involved, including himself. But it had to be done, and quickly, and dreams were the best and least harmful place to do so.
I'm not going to say that his experience as a Herald and soldier don't give this some credibility, and I'm not going to say that narrative compression isn't a thing that writers can and do use to get characters from emotional point a to point b, but this stretched my credibility just a skooch and made me go, "They're going to keep him blind, right?"
Reader, they healed him at the end of the book. Can we PLEASE let him live a full herald life while blind??? He was no less effective without his sight than with it, and A LITTLE PHYSICAL DISABILITY REP AMONG THE ACTIVE-DUTY HERALDS WOULD BE LOVELY. Plenty of them live with anxiety, depression, hypervigilance, or other mental health challenges, but heaven forbid a herald have a physical disability.
This is a pattern I'm noticing more and more in books. Soldiers and soldier-adjacent characters can experience mental illness and disability, but not physical. It's that really annoying mind-body split looming large, and I don't have a good solution for this other than letting active duty characters also have physical disabilities, rather than having them be cured, retired, or in roles that never require them to be in the field. And I do get that like...if you are physically disabled, your best bet is not to be in a fight, but that's not how LIFE works. Sometimes the fight comes to you, or your expertise is needed in the field. It happens. LET IT.
Other than my growing frustration with disability rep in military, military-adjacent, and martial-esque organizations in fiction, I love this book to little tiny pieces. It's a beautifully executed tragedy without being self-indulgent or unnecessarily maudlin.

Hello, sorry to bother you but can I ask a question about the warrior cats disability post you reblogged earlier? And I mean this in good faith, honestly, I want to understand.
I haven't read warrior cats, but just from what was described in the post, it sounds... realistic? Since not everyone bounces back from becoming disabled. For example, a coworker and I (in a labor intensive field) have the same injury to our knee. He, I guess you could say has responded "well" to his injury. He has a higher drive to push past pain, not let it limit what he can do, and is able to work as hard, or harder, than non-disabled coworkers, but he is still absolutely disabled. In his case, he often overworks himself and thus ends up having to take off several days to recover and is on a lot of pain medication, both Rx and self medicated. In the scenario presented in the post, he would def be able to stay in the warrior class. But I didn't respond well to my injury, and don't react well to pain. I fell into a deep deep depression that took almost 8 years to crawl out of. Doing the exact same tasks as he does, I work slower and more carefully, avoiding pain at all costs rather than pushing past/despite pain. I'm slower, not as effective. But I don't need to take time off or frequent breaks to recover, and though it takes a little longer, I do just as much work as he does at the end of the week when accounting for the time he takes to recover. I like to imagine that I've reacted to my injury well, but can't help feeling inadequate and worthless when compared to coworker. Especially on days that we work side by side and he's running quite literal circles around me. And remember, we have the exact same injury with very similar causes and only a few months time difference.
From what I understand of the culture of Warrior cats (which is admittedly very very little) I imagine I'd end up in a healer class as well, even if I wished I could be warrior class. I would give almost anything to work as fast, as effectively, as hard as coworker does. But I can't.
So I guess what I'm asking is, what am I missing from the narrative, as someone who hasn't read warrior cats, that makes a character, who has not returned to their former glory after an injury, a poor representation of disability? As the post stands on its own right now, it just feels like it's kicking disabled people when they're down for not acting like they're still fully abled. Like shaming a paralyzed person for not joining a sport.
I have to assume that it's just poorly worded for anyone outside the fandom, but it really does come of as... well... ableist. Which is what drove me to ask, since making assumptions of ableism is generally kinda shitty, and I am curious about the source material.
I hope I didn't come off aggressive or let my emotions on the subject get carried away here, genuinely sorry if it does come off rude. I promise am asking in good faith because I want to understand from a creative standpoint if the narrative actually handled it poorly, and how-so, to help myself and others potentially avoid making the same artistic mistakes.
Thank you for taking the time to read this wall of text, and again, so sorry for bothering you!
No no!! Not aggressive or rude or anything of the sort :D
I’ll be honest, I didn’t read the full text, but I got the gist of it so I’ll try to answer aptly ^^
The problem with Warriors isn’t that there isn’t disability representation - there is, it’s just. Awful. Why? Because almost every single disabled character, sans THREE, in a series that has thousands of named characters, is FORCED into a role they don’t want - or KILLED. Solely for being disabled, solely for being “different”.
It’s not that they necessarily chose that life for themselves, it’s that it was forced upon them, which is where so many fans (reasonably) draw issue with. Disabled characters are offered the bare minimum in Warriors canon. Either they’re essentially forced to become a doctor, with the trope of “the broken-bodied healing the able-bodied” (which personally unsettled me greatly), or they’re shipped off to the elder’s den, which is a place where cats retire due to old age and are cared for by their Clanmates, usually without ever having the chance to prove themselves, and display both their abilities and weaknesses. They’re just automatically shoved into this corner.
There was a Deaf character, once, in the decades-long span of this book series, that was told he would never become a warrior solely because of his deafness - and then was immediately killed off in a manner that was almost never used again as a device to kill a character.
There was a character who was hit by a car and, as a result, ended up losing the function of one of her back legs. Prior to this, she was training as any other young member of her society would. Immediately after? She became a doctor.
There was a character who became blind due to an outside force, and, despite being the equivalent of maybe a thirty-year-old, immediately retired to the elder’s den.
There was a born blind character who fought to train as a warrior, under a half-blind warrior. He was doing well in his training - until the in-universe religion came down to him and forced him to give up his dreams in order to become a doctor. Granted, his case was a little more complicated and intermingled with plot, but it still stands.
There was a character with anxiety who was a poor hunter, and was pressured to become a doctor because of his lack of skills.
There was a character who was paralyzed, and was dismissed as dead, or “better off dead”, by almost everyone around her - INCLUDING HER OWN FAMILY - except the blind character, who found kinship with her and fought tooth-and-nail to keep her alive and healthy.
And the thing is? These characters are CATS! Cats, who have been documented living alone in the wild with these sort of disabilities and thriving!! Which makes it all the more frustrating to see a narrative built around the appeal of cats, have them have this whole support system and community, and that community actively turn their backs on them.
It’s not about them choosing. It’s about them being forced. Not having any opportunity to grow, or learn, or allow others around them to do the same in regards to them. There’s no acceptance here. In universe, it seems like they’re just shoved into the shadows so the able bodied characters don’t have to look at them or think too hard about them, unless they’re healing their wounds.
The characters themselves are not the poor representation. It’s how the authors have handled them - by shoving them aside, to the shadows, to the dogs. It’s frustrating and disheartening.

My AU (Underverse)
UnderWelcomed
The story occurs in a world where Asgore uses Frisk and the other souls to escape the underground, and the humans don’t like them at all. Part one of the story is below.
Asgore did it. He finally did it. Using the seven souls the underground had collected he broke the barrier. As the monsters emerged from the mountain they looked at the wide expance of the bright sunset. They were awe-struck. The monsters made their way down mountain and into a city. Inhabited by the same species that locked them in Mt. Ebbot. Then the shouts. The screams. “SANS! WHY ARE THE HUMANS MAKING THAT FACE AT US?“ Sans was busy looking at the weapons the humans in blue suits had. “i dunno, paps... but its lookin’ bone chilling tibia honest.“ Then they attacked. Monster civilians fled; like the Snowdin, Waterfall, Hotland, and New Home residents. The guards, healers, and the king stayed. Asgore tried to talk things out while defending his people and himself. “ Listen,” Asgore’s calm, but commanding voice rang out. “ Fighting will do us no good. Please, allow us to explain ourselv-“ He was struck in the leg with weapon that took 100 HP. With a sharp breath he finally allowed Undyne, Captain of the Royal Guard, to unleash attack. Only, if she promised to give the humans lenience. “Gahhhhh!” She yelled as she fought against the superior number. Successfully knocking a few out per Asgore’s request of MERCY. Though, as soon as she turned her back a tall man, part of the SWAT team came up behind her. Another officer was contacting government officials and agents to track down the fleeing monsters and take them for questioning if compliant. If not then the officer was to ‘take care of them’. The tall man closed in on her and fired his weapon.
BLOCKED
Undyne’s POV:
A shot rang through the air, the smell of dust followed suit. Turning my head quickly, I struggle to make out the white blur in front of me. A ringing sound fills my ears as I try to figure out who saved me. I blink hard till my vision returns. “P-Paps!” My voice tight. The rattling sound worried me. Papyrus doesn’t seem to notice me. Instead tears drip silently down his face. No words can describe this. This human… Hurt him… bad… Papyrus never cries. At least not the I’ve ever seen. I can feel the adrenaline, the rage. It engulfs my soul. I send spears -rows of them in every direction- and run over to Papyrus. “Papyrus!” He drops onto his knees, holding his shoulder, crying- no sobbing. Sans is there beside him…. Wait when did Sans get here? Never mind. “PAPYRUS! L-LOOK AT ME! C-COME ON!” I didn’t realize I was screaming. I glance to Sans. “Get Papyrus and yourself out of here.” I said sharply, surprising myself. He only nods, thought it’s stiff and pained, unlike his laid back, relaxed demeanor. In a burst of blue light, the skeleton brothers are gone to who knows where. I fight along side the king and realize, there’s a lot more dust than I thought… Lesser Dog and Doggo… are gone… Dogamy looks heartbroken. No sign of a civilian. A part of me hopes it’s all a nightmare, but the pain in my soul’s too real… I shed a tear before taking down a group of the humans… It feels like something is missing.
Part 2 tomorrow… :)

Grailfinders #24: Georgios
Tumblr media
today on Grailfinders, we’re finally getting back to work on the OG servants with Georgios! dear ol’ Dragons Georg is a Champion, because what else is a cleric with a sword supposed to be? that being said, we do make some pit stops into the Cavalier archetype for a cool horse that will not eat you, as well as the Game Hunter archetype to ruin dragons’ days even more, and the Knight Vigilant archetype to become a vigilant knight.
and yes, I’m still using the “confused with a nature god” excuse to give him some extra stuff to do. if nasu can create an entire servant based on one niche reading of a mythological figure so can I. I will be vindicated when saber Georgios comes out in LB 8.
check out his build breakdown below the cut, or his character sheet over here!
next up: Teach me, Blackbeard-san!
Ancestry & Background
While we will be spicing it up later, Georgios starts out as a bog-standard Human. that gets him a +2 in Wisdom and Constitution, but not a whole lot else at level 1. that being said, he is pretty Versatile, giving him a free first-level general feat like Ride. with this, you can automatically command animals to move while riding them, and they act at the same time you do. you also get situational protection from mental effects when you Keep Up Appearances as a reaction. this doesn’t make you immune to emotional effects, but it does prevent enemies from capitalizing on them.
at level 5, you can Sense Allies. a good tank always knows what their party is doing, otherwise the healer might run off and get himself killed pulling yet another mob group we weren’t ready for and- ahem. sorry. we’ve been playing a lot of FFXIV lately. the important thing is you can always detect when allies are nearby, and finding them while hidden is a lot easier.
at level 9 you become a Hardy Traveler, making it easier to ride around in heavy armor. turns out dragons don’t wait that long to attack.
at level 13 you gain a Stubborn Persistence that helps keep you from getting fatigued by making a flat check to avoid the effect. you still have to get away from whatever’s causing it though, or you’ll have to remake the check every once in a while.
finally, at level 17 you can Bounce Back once per day, preventing you from being wounded after hitting 0 HP. that’s one more chance to get up from being knocked down, which is practically a guts on its own.
George’s real background was a soldier, but we can pick up soldiering skills from anywhere- getting photography lessons at a later level would feel weird. that’s why we’re starting as a Printer. that gives you a boost in Charisma and Wisdom, as well as training in the Society and Scribing Lore skills. you’re also Multilingual, giving you two more languages now, and even more if you level up in society. George is simultaneously Greek, Palestinian, and English, depending on who you ask. a real globe-trotter!
Starting Proficiencies
yeah this part takes so long I’m making a whole new section for it.
Trained: Perception; Religion; Survival; Athletics; [Diplomacy; Medicine]; Reflex saves; Class DC; unarmed, simple, and martial attacks; unarmored, light, medium, and heavy armor
Expert: Fortitude saves, Will saves
Class Levels
1. your Key Ability is Strength, giving you another boost to help haul that big sword around. you also get an Ability Boost in four more stats, like Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, and Charisma.
I’ve heard rumors that they’re planning on removing alignment restrictions for Champions in the next Pathfinder update, but to be honest, being a Paladin still works really well for you. with this, you can Lay on Hands using your devotion points, which are usually one per devotion spell per day, and can be recharged by spending ten minutes doing good deeds. touch someone, and they get healed.
you can also make a Retributive Strike against an enemy who attacks another ally. this grants the ally in question some damage resistance, and you get to make an attack if they’re close enough. you also get trained in Nature for some reason.
following the trend of useless features, you can Shield Block. useful if you have one, but Georgios usually doesn’t carry a shield. maybe he should? might help.
one last feature, your Deity’s Domain grains you a second devotion point and spell. I’d rather just get the Might domain’s second spell right away, but we need to get Athletic Rush first. this spell increases your movement speed and your athletics checks, and as part of the action you use to cast the spell you can stride, leap, climb, or swim. it’s really just helping you be a lot more physical in short bursts. given what you’re fighting, every little bit helps.
2. at level two, you can take the oath to become a Dragonslayer! that means you have to fight evil dragons now, and to help with that you get a +4 bonus to damage against evil dragons when using your retributive strike. again, every bit.
you also hold the Eyes of the City, making it easier to track creatures in villages and towns by listening to local’s stories. I’m sure this can also help you find the perfect photo ops too.
we’re also grabbing the Cavalier archetype this level, giving you an animal companion. you can also pledge yourself to a cause now for bonuses in the archetype later, and given how champions are all about pledging themselves you’ve pretty much done that already.
3. at level three you gain a Divine Ally, a steed who is… also an animal companion with the mount ability. huh. you can’t keep both at the same time, so we’re mostly going to focus on the champion companion.
thankfully, other features like Express Rider can work regardless of the companion you’re partnered with, making it easier to increase your travel speed while riding.
you’re also an expert in Religion now. it’s kind of your thing. that and the dragons, obviously.
4. at level four your Divine Health makes it harder for you to get sick- you get a +1 to all saves against diseases, and your successes are always critical.
you’re also an Experienced Professional, so your photography is never bad enough to keep you from making any money off of it. I know as a man of god you’re not into material possessions, but you’re going to need quite a nest egg to afford a dragonslaying sword.
you also pick up a Cavalier’s Banner, giving all allies within 30’ of your mount a +1 bonus to will saves against fear, at the cost of causing them to be frightened when your banner is destroyed. carrying a flag everywhere is a little unwieldy, but hey it’s more mental debuff resistance.
5. at level five you get an Ability Boost in Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, and Charisma again. more health, more dragonslaying, more spell power. you’re also better at Scribing now, since that’s what we’re using as your photography. everybody needs a hobby.
on top of that, your Weapon Expertise makes you an expert with weapons! everything except advanced weapons are your for the using!
6. at level six you get a Loyal Warhorse, making your champion steed a mature companion, and it can no longer attack you, even if magically compelled to. kind of a specific feature, but given your horse’s unique dietary needs, that’s probably for the best.
you’ve spent enough time studying photography that your Unmistakable Lore makes it easier to recall knowledge about the process, preventing critical failures.
you can also Defend Mount as a reaction, taking the hit for your horse while you’re riding it. that’s kind of the opposite of how this is supposed to go, but you’ll have a lot more defensive buffs by the time this is over to eat damage.
7. speaking of, your new Armor Expertise does what you’d expect, plus you get the armor specialization effects of medium and heavy armor. you can also Pick up the Pace while traveling to hustle more, and you’re a master of Religion.
on last thing- your Weapon Specialization adds an extra 2 damage to all your attacks, and grows as your weapon training does.
8. at level eight you get the Advanced Deity’s Domain devotion spell, giving you a third devotion point each day which you can use to cast Enduring Might. as a reaction, you get resistance to all damage from one attack or effect. this is Bayard’s one attack nullification effect, and it also grows as you level up and also based on your strength.
speaking of defense, you can pray for some sacred defense as an action once an hour! if you succeed, you’ll get some temporary hp- you can also try a harder check for more of it!
if all this protection is getting you down, lets go on the offense with the game hunter dedication! with this, you can target creatures with the hunt prey action if you can see it, hear it, or you’re tracking it down. this gives you a +2 bonus to seek and track it, as well as a bonus to stealth checks! you can also get an extra bonus- if you hit your prey while its flat-footed, it needs to make a constitution save. on a failure, it gets slowed down for up to a minute.
9. that last bit from level 8 uses your class dc, so it’s a good thing your champion expertise just came around to give you expertise in your class dc and divine spells. your divine smite makes creatures you make a retributive strike against take persistent damage too.
your saves get better when you become a juggernaut with lightning reflexes. that’s mastery in fortitude saves, plus more crit succs, and expert for reflex saves.
you’re also an expert with nature now for better riding!
10. level 10’s another ability boost in strength, constitution, wisdom, and charisma! all the stuff you need to slap up a dragon real good. well, most of it. we’re working on it, it’s a long-term goal! on thing that’ll help is your battle prayer, helping you blast an enemy with good or law damage once a day. the damage even triples once you’re legendary in religion.
on the nonmagic side, your steed is now an imposing destrier, turning it into a savage animal companion, plus it gets an action each turn even if you don’t spend time commanding it, letting it attack or move for free!
speaking of movement, your quick positioning helps you get into the thick of things at the start of battle against your prey, letting you step up to two times for free. you’re the one with all the defense buffs, so make sure you’re between your friends and your dragons.
11. at level 11 your alertness gives you expert perception, and your divine will makes you a master of will saves, with more crits to boot! you’re also a master of nature!
you can also exalt your retributive strike, getting the rest of your party in on the hitting stuff action! everybody within 15’ of you can make a melee attack with a -5 penalty as a reaction. just really julius caesar his ass.
you also get an incredible investiture, letting you attune to more magic items. the bones of saints are relics, so you already have like, 200+ magic items on you! congrats!
12. at level 12 you become a Blade of Justice. you can spend two actions to make a special attack against something you’ve seen hurt an innocent person, dealing extra damage against evil creatures, and letting you turn all the damage into good! you can also use all your retributive strike effects on this attack.
as a master of nature, you have Morphic Manipulation, helping you grow a plant through ten minutes of meditation. doing this more than once a day is possible, but it makes you fatigued, and you can’t do it more than twice a day. told you we were bringing back the nature god stuff.
one last thing- you can spend three actions on a Trampling Charge, moving your mount up to its speed and through enemies, dealing damage to everything it passes through, based on the targets’ reflex saves.
13. at level 13 your Armor Mastery gives you mastery… in armor! shocking, I know. you’re also a master in scribing now! and your Weapon Mastery does exactly what you’d think. easy level!
14. at level fourteen, you’re actually expected to fight dragons! at least I assume so, since that’s the level you can finally emit a Wyrmbane Aura, protecting yourself and nearby allies from elemental damage, with extra protection if that damage is from a dragon’s breath.
you can also Quick Mount now, mounting a creature and giving it an order in the same action! dragons move fast, but so do you.
you can also use Double Prey now to mark two enemies at the same time. FGO has three slots in each wave, but if you’re fighting dragons usually one of them is really big and takes up two of those, so it all works out!
15. level fifteen’s Ability Boost bumps your Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, and Wisdom. at this point brute strength won’t add too much to your fight, it’s all about survivability. you’re also a Caravan Leader, for more hustle in your bustle while traveling.
your Greater Weapon Specialization adds even more damage to every swing, and we’ll also bump your Athletics up to expert so you can stay on your horse easier.
16. at level 16, Bayard becomes an Auspicious Mount, making it a specialized companion that can be an “Auspice” mount. there are other options, but the feat’s named after it, come on. this gives your mount expertise in Religion, the ability to speak celestial, and increased intelligence and wisdom.
you’ve also been a knight long enough at this point to know some Courtly Graces, letting you use your societal training to make impressions on nobles. given that your society is actually worse than your diplomacy, that may not be a good idea. you look the part though.
speaking of knighthood, you’re now a Knight Vigilant. this increases your proficiency in Religion to Legendary status, and you now provide greater cover to your allies as they stand behind you.
17. more skill buffs! your Champion Mastery improves your spells and class DC, while your Legendary Armor makes you legendary with armor. you’re also legendary in Nature now, to be almost superhuman in your ability to ride creatures. because you are. that’s how servants work.
18. you now exude an Aura of Righteousness, giving you and all allies resistance to evil damage. you now resist evil, elemental damage, and specific attacks, so it’s really hard for a dragon to actually fight you and leave a scratch.
you’re so religious, you can receive Divine Guidance by spending 10 minutes reading the bible. you make a religion check of the DM’s choice of DC, and you can get a hint on how to move forward.
you can also Keep up the Good Fight once an hour. if you’d drop to 0 HP without dying, you can react to stay a 1 HP with some temporary HP to boot, and you become wounded. unless you bounce back. now this is a guts. and it’s also like 90% of the reason we grabbed Knight Vigilant anyway.
19. at level 19 we go entirely off script thanks to your Fey Life. we’re about to go through faerie britain, so you’re bound to save at least one fey, right? your nearby surroundings are now super vibrant at all times, which would mostly be flavor if not for your photography hobby. you can also summon fey once a day, but that’s not why we’re here.
the first time you die past this point, you come back to life, becoming part fey. now this is the gutsiest guts we could guts. I mean get. I know Georgios is more know for being used as solo fodder, but all that means is he’s great at dying and coming back!
this is great, but it comes with a cost- the second time you die, and each time after, you become completely fey, and no longer care about the material world, essentially turning you into an NPC. this can be reversed with a three-day ritual, but the third and subsequent times would require something like the wish spell to be fixed.
you also gain the Hero’s Defiance devotion spell, letting you heal yourself as a free action right before you would drop to 0 HP, so hopefully you won’t die that often. plus, you’re better at athletics again.
20. for your final level, you get an Ability Boost for Strength, Constitution, Intelligence, and Wisdom. you also become a Sacred Defender, giving you a further 10 resistance to physical damage caused by evil or dragon creatures, and you’re immune to critical hits.
furthermore, you can now Influence Nature over the course of 10 minutes, trying a nature check to affect the behavior of animals in the area, like setting up natural alarms via songbird, or making hunting for food a lot easier.
finally, you can gain Lead the Way, spending two actions to guide an ally through danger. your movement will still trigger reactions, but theirs won’t. it’s rough, but that’s kind of the job you signed up for.
Pros & Cons
Pros:
you are really, really, really hard to kill. you have resistance to almost anything a dragon can throw at you, which means you have resistances to almost everything. add onto that your solid health pool, high AC, self-healing, and ability to further block up attacks as a reaction, and you won’t go down easily. and then you’ll get right back up with one of your three or four abilities that just lets you ignore being knocked out. and then you’ll get back up with your “say no to death” card.
all that tankitude is great for taking hits for the team. you block up line of sight against enemies, you have some powerful counterattacks to encourage enemies focus on you, and you can help your team move around while only making yourself a valid target.
for a guy in plate mail you’re so goddamn fast it isn’t funny. not in combat, of course, but being able to cut down on travel time is fantastic in games that care about that sort of thing. travel speed can mean the difference between getting ambushed and setting an ambush yourself.
Cons:
you need your reaction ready simultaneously to heal yourself, counterattack, and block damage. obviously, you can’t do all those at once. this means that if anything, you’re thinking more when it’s not your turn than when it is, and that’s a weird playstyle to get used to. guess it’s par for the course for defensive types.
that “no death for me thanks” card from earlier comes with a major drawback in trading one death for a later, very permanent one. while your defenses are fantastic, you also have to take into account how much hate you’re focusing on yourself.
final downside: the horse can’t come with you everywhere. I know I haven’t brought up Bayard too much in terms of combat effectiveness, but Pathfinder is a lot better than D&D when it comes to horse survivability, and both increasing your own movement speed and getting all the horse-exclusive features from Cavalier is a nice bonus. unfortunately, Bayard is both large and an animal, so there’s plenty of spaces you simply can’t take him.

Not-So-Quick Thoughts on Ideal City
Tumblr media
Okay, finished up Ideal City a lot faster than I thought I would, at least this first batch of stages. Got a few more days until the EX-stages starts happening and while I’m riding this momentum I might as well cover my general thoughts and first impressions on the story and event as a whole. Overall I think this is was quaint and entertaining story. I’m very thankful it’s not as long as some of the bigger events like Stultifera Navis or Near Light, but an event focusing on Gavial probably wouldn’t be that long anyway considering how straightforward she is as a character, and I find this a very nice sequel to The Great Chief Returns. Gameplay-wise things were... fine. I was gritting my teeth a little at IC-9, but it was manageable when remembered Decel Binders exist and I have an E2 Angelina.
But before I get ahead of myself, the synopsis:
Some time after the events of The Great Chief Returns Gavial gets an emergency letter from Tomimi explaining that Acahualla was under threat of a coming calamity and needed to get back to her homeland ASAP in order to save it from destruction. Taking the letter at face value she immediately grabs Eunectes and makes her design combat gear for the trip, because given the urgency Acahualla doesn’t need a healer, it needs a warrior to save it from a coming doom...
Only for the letter to be exaggerate, the calamity being practically a middle worry involving the Durin city under Acahualla, and Gavial being extremely pissed that was bamboozled... at least... until the calamity is actually revealed soon after arriving to the apparent Ideal City of Zeruertza.
Story
Overall I loved the story and find it a good continuation of the themes in The Great Chief Returns. Where that event asked the question of modernization and moving a society forward at the cost of its culture and tradition, Ideal City asks -through Pozemka & Gavial- if it’s right to cling to a preferred culture even at the risk of its destruction and seems to answer that it isn’t. At least that’s my take on the story. This was actually something I’ve been wanting to see discuss in Arknights for awhile now, to see a general clash of cultures and beliefs between two different groups outside of just playing it off for comedy or making it a one-off moment, and I really like the discussions had within the story.
I think the biggest surprise was just how nuanced of an answer I got during the story, coming from High Priest of all things. To summarize his point, no one culture of belief system is superior to another, while people will have their preferences and can make some objective claims about the pros of their culture it’s impossible and outright arrogant to think one’s way of life is objectively better than the other. In context to the story, while Durin society may be easygoing, relaxed, and even innocent to an extent, it doesn’t mean that way of life is inherently superior to the wilder, more violent, might-makes-right society of Acahualla. Eunectes herself explains that Durin society, while more peaceful and calmer, would be completely incompatible with most of Acahualla society. It really feels like everyone in the event showed a more thoughtful side to themselves...
Well, sans Elysium, but he had plenty of nuance in Stultifera Navis, so I’ll give him a pass.
Oddly enough, I have no real thoughts on Minimalist/Stitch. I can appreciate his story of being an introvert in an extroverted society struggling to get out of his shell. As an introvert myself I honestly feel for the guy, especially with all the pressure he puts on himself and freaking out when approached by so much kindness and understanding, fearful of wanting to actually reach out and accept the hands held out to him. It’s a feeling I’ve struggled with a few times myself.
But... he’s... also kind of a little shit and so opinionated and dismissive of everyone else that I wanted Gavial to sock him four times over.
I think he’s written well, but the thing about reading someone being self-destructive and wrapped up in themselves, as realistic as it may be, is that it’s also annoying watching them whine, complain, and whinge about shit no one else cares about save for them, and for very stupid reasons at that. Again, good character and the fact that I feel this way about him is more a good thing than anything.
Gameplay
I have some real mixed feelings about this one. On one hand, it’s not the absolute hell that was Stultifera Navis with it’s dodging enemies that required Lappland and Jaye, bullshit nethersea brand buffs, and The Amalgam. The maps were pretty easy to clear and the self-driving car mechanic honestly felt optional at times, and save for IC-9 I ran into no trouble whatever. The enemies with high dodge only have it temporarily and can be silenced by Lappland besides, the handful of machine enemies could be melted by arts, and smart cars were... there. A nice addition and fun to mess with, but overall unneeded until IC-9.
On the other hand, IC-9 was a bitch to figure out.
Again, not on the level of The Amalgam, but I swear they just make goddamn essays worth of skills and abilities for that damned cube. That cube ain’t even a thing that’s discussed in the story outside of the livestream event, if you even count that.
Something I feel like I should explain is that I stopped bothering to look at guides these past few months when doing maps now. Not out of pride or some belief that I know better (Lord knows I’m a small-brain dumbass at times in these maps), but because 90% of the guides all now require either Thorns, Ch’en Alter, or Silverash, and I only have one of those three raised and even then I don’t raise meta operators unless I’m really struggling or they get a really hot skin.
That said, I figured out the trick after a few failed attempts.
I used Angelina’s S2 to essentially freeze the cube in place, had Lappland on her S1 since the cube had a high physical resistance, and had Saria holding the blue box with another defender and Blaze while on her S2 while spamming the hell out of the smart car and it’s healing/ASP buff over my units. It did the trick.I had to go meta, but my meta.
Conclusion
Overall I’m liking the event. I hope we get more like it, shorter, simpler stories with decent arcs and themes that don’t take 6+ hours to finish. I’m looking forward to the next summer event, here’s hoping it’s something just as fun... and that coming Texas event will be worth all the hype as I save up pulls.
Anyway, be seeing you folks later.

i am in love with the headcanon about nmj's death copying his father's in even more respects than canon gives us, esp the conflicts with nhs, but doesn't that make nhs look kinda dumb for not realizing he's sick?
Not really. The important factor to remember is that Huaisang has no reason to not trust the people around him at this point in the novel.
His brother continually insists he's fine. Unlike in the drama. Er-ge and San-ge slso insist he's fine and don't tell him the real reason for all the extra visits. The Second-in-Command, the healers, the elders, the senior disciples... everyone who would actually know what's going on all say his brother is fine. And these are his family and friends. So of course he trusts them!
But every single one of them is lying to his face.
So let's go back to that headcanon and look at it from his perspective.
His father, dying and insane from his saber being shattered, calls him horrible things and even attacks him.
When he is told that it was the sickness talking (but is not told that all strong saber users will eventually share that sickness, shattering or no shattering), he accepts that.
Now, here is his brother destroying everything he owns and calling him the same horrible things years later.
But his brother isn't sick. Not only does everyone say he's not, not only does he still look like he always has, but Baxia is clearly still in one piece without a scratch on her as she hangs off Mingjue's belt.
So if his brother is healthy, but hates him just as much as their father did... maybe it wasn't the sickness that caused his father to react the way he did all those years ago, Huaisang thinks. Maybe they both just finally hit their limit with him.
And this time, no one corrects him on it, because with the brothers expressly avoiding each other, everyone's still keeping Huaisang in the dark about Mingjue's continual decline.
It's not until the moment he sees the chaos in the courtyard that he realizes he's been lied to. It was the sickness all along.
But now it's too late.
And now he has a lot less reason to be so trusting next time.

Hey besties have you seen my omori deltarune au and went "wow i have no idea whats going on!!!"
Well me neither!!! Woohoo!!! Here's me trying to organize all the important info the best I can lol
Tumblr media
I don't have an official name for this au I just either call it by it's full name or use Omorune if I wanna be quick lol
🖤A Quick AU Rundown™!🖤
Omorune is a crossover between OMORI and Deltarune where characters from OMORI go through the general plot of Deltarune! Not all plot points and character roles match one-to-one though. Also expect a lot of bias towards Spaceboy content gsdgdas <3
Also also expect major spoilers for both games!!
❤Main AU Tag: #omori deltarune au❤
I may say "we" when talking about AU ideas because I don't come up with all the ideas! I usually bounce around ideas with some friends in a group chat like @a-queer-kitkat (second ceo of halkinna) , @pastel-player , @knowledgeable-atlas , and @yim-yum-ophelia-time! So shoutout to those guys too!!
Ok continuing post under the cut
There are a few headspace characters that were turned into regular kids in Faraway! Chosen with heavy bias though sgrrsges here they are:
💚"Halkinna" Honeydew Tag: #lightner!spaceboy💚
💝Susanne Hearth Tag: #lightner!sweetheart💝
💜Rococo Tag (sorry we only briefly talked about this so theres only one post in here gdsdsge): #lightner!rococo💜
Character Stuff:
Kris -> Sunny; Susie -> Aubrey; Asriel -> Mari; Noelle -> Basil; Berdly -> Spaceboy
Ralsei -> Headspace Mari / "Raim" (story-wise) and also kinda Hero (magic healer role guy); Queen -> Sweetheart (separate from Susanne); more probably idk i forgot
Kel and Hero do not replace anyone directly, but they're also part of the party in Chapter 1
Everyone not mentioned is either up in the air (because the incompleteness of Deltarune makes it hard to find good matches that we like), or they remain exactly the same as they do in Deltarune (for example, Alphys is inexplixably the same. Because we don't know any teachers in omori loll)
Dr characters that are for sure the same unless we decide to change our minds: Lancer, Sweet Cap'n Cakes (I love them your honour I can't replace them), Alphys, Undyne, sans, and Toriel
The "kris being the only human in town" thing does not translate to here, but monsters are still normal
Rough Timeline but with like ten question marks!!!
Pre-Game: Mari either got stair'd or she just went to college, depending on how evil we feel at the moment loll!!
A while before chapter 1, Hero gets back to town from college and visits the school. Before class, he drags Kel with him to help clean out the old classrooms, but they both fall into the closet dark world and pass by the castle without checking it.
Chapter 1: Sunny goes to school, group projects are assigned, Aubrey eats chalk by accident, and Dark World shenanigans ensue. Not many story differences other than Kel and Hero meeting up with Sunny and Raim midway through the chapter.
Chapter 2: Sunny and Aubrey are getting along a lil better now! Yay! Dark world happens in the library, Basil gets captured, Halkinna is a lil dummy (affectionate) and helps Sweetheart, who resembles his ex because Sweetheart is a donut-themed USB filled with pictures of him and Susanne that Halkinna left in the library one time. Insert like the rest of chapter 2's plot here.
Chapter 3: find out next time on!!!!(explodes)
