so I have to share how the Cazador fight went in Tactician mode because hoooo boy.
I know I was talking about trying out some barrelmancy but also I wanted to kick his ass fair and square, especially in preparation for doing it in honour mode (where I'll be saving all the explosives for the final fight).
My only previous experience with the Cazador fight, from my first run, went as follows:
Run in there like a bunch of idiots at level 10 because that fucker just tried to kidnap our boy and immediately get our asses kicked so so bad.
Look up fight strategies, go back in, hit the fucker with a sunbeam scroll and have Karlach punt him off a cliff (this was before that tactic got patched out)
Take forever struggling to mop up the rest of his truly ridiculous number of minions
Elf Emotional Breakdown x2 Combo (on account of Tezalin was literally Too Paladin To Paladin and broke their oath by freeing the spawn)
All of this to say that I did not have any Actual Experience with the full fight, so I was going in mostly blind.
As such, my first attempt on Tactician went... very poorly. I went in with Ardwin (Warrior of Light and Darkness of FFXIV fame, and currently throw-build barbarian), Gale, Jaheira with Daylight on her weapon, and obviously Astarion, along with a very good supply of sunbeam scrolls, one Otto's Irresistible Dance mostly just for shits and giggles, and a few Globes of Invulnerability.
Plan pretty much immediately went to shit because mist form Cazador has a necrotic aura that does a stupid amount of damage and the ghouls were stankin' up the place. Gale and Jaheira got downed really fast and things were not looking great. And for SOME FUCKING REASON, throwing health potions bugged out and did litereally nothing except break the potion. Still no idea what went wrong there.
But I went "okay, how can I turn this around." The answer was reviving Gale and Jaheira, casting one of the Globes of Invuln, and having everyone just camp out inside there and take potshots at the bastard between healing back up. It was really, really silly. I was literally just sitting there laughing because this whole fight was such a ridiculous trainwreck and the current strategy felt so incredibly stupid.
Key word, WAS. It very promptly stopped being funny when something SHOVED ASTARION out of the invuln globe and, because we were all camped out in there and thus only blocking one of the ritual sources, Cazador immediately murderized the hell out of him in one turn. To my absolute fucking horror.
"...First of all fuck this sunbeam scroll, Ardwin is going back to rage mode because she is MAD. Astarion, oh my god, I'm so fucking sorry, you just hang on for a second, I'll get you back up after he's done, it's gonna be okay." (Cazador was almost dead at this point thankfully.)
Back to Invuln Globe Potshots to wrap things up, and then once we had mopped up the last of the minions I revived my poor boy and then had Jaheira use up all her remaining spell slots to heal him because I literally felt SO BAD.
(not quite bad enough to let him ascend though lol)
I wound up redoing the fight because obviously I needed the extra practice (and also still felt terrible about the death-by-Cazador). Second time went a lot smoother. I started the fight by having Astarion sneak-attack with Arrow of Shut The Fuck Up (aka Arrow of Arcane Interference which if it hits, guaranteed silence effect for a round with no saving throw!) instead of starting the conversation. He still dragged us into the dialogue at the start of the next round, but after getting Astarion freed, it turned out that Astarion continuing to hit him with Arrow of Shut The Fuck Up every round was really effective and also very satisfying. We also actually did the mechanics and stood on the ritual spots, which, shocker of shockers, helped quite a bit. (Ascension still denied. Sorry buddy. Not gonna happen.)

Some people only see what they want to see.
I’ve seen someone say “you want to save her as fast as you can so you can see her smile one more time” is reasonable than “I want to save her as fast as I can so I can see her smile one more time” just to protect the ridiculous Adventure logs English version.
Seriously, who can say that line like that? Ever?

I have discovered the most strange and marvelous of creatures! Or should I say that it has discovered me?
As I write this entry by lamplight before retiring, the sound of rain falls quietly upon the thatched roof of my little bamboo shack, and the little vine creature sits sweetly in my lap, hugging my legs and around my middle and crooning sleepy sounds.
It is a fascinating thing, and I cannot wait to discover more about its habits!
The tentacle-focused exchange is finally off anon, and I can share my fics! I am absurdly proud of this one. I had way too much fun with the narrative voice of this fic, writing an epistolary story from the log of an old-timey jungle explorer.
This fic fulfills my giftee’s requests for adorable tentacle monster, tentacle vines, falling in love with the tentacle monster, and enthusiastic consentacles. I also threw in a dash of homoerotic tension between jungle explorer and his local guide, because it’s delicious.
Please enjoy!

So - Ash, Bone and Blood, the story so fa
Setting/campaign note: According to the writings of Vecna, his newly discovered branch of arcane magic - necromancy - identified three states of being for mortal beings: Blood (the living being), the Bone (the material body), and the Ash (the ephemeral soul).
The Grave of Eternal Samara
This adventure's tale begins with the Valisian emigration from Nerath, following the rumours of humanity's origins in the Bloodsands. One group settled in the valleys in and around the Kitezhan mountains, finding evidence of the Baelish lost kingdom of Vecna the undying. One such valley became Knochental, the birthplace, centuries later, of our hero necromancer, Kaspar. Knochental's location was particularly taboo to the local Baelish peoples - believed to hold the evils of the Giantwar, the ghosts of the dead Samarans.
Over time this curse manifested in a growing loss of vitality and fertility in the valley. While plants would grow, and animals and humans become particularly long-lived, few children would be born, and those who fell ill would often perish rather than survive. Still, the community would grow strong in part because of the traditions of ancestor veneration and animation of their prepared skeletal remains.
Kaspar, the last child born to the community and heir to the position of community leader, would grow up with the desire to lift the curse from his people, and restore vitality to the valley, lest childlessness cause it to vanish forever. His journey to learn how to accomplish this took him westward, in search of the libraries and the sages of Khonsuria and the Great Library of Rheksus.
The letter and the journey begins
While Kaspar learned much of the region and its ancient history, nothing pointed to the particular curse upon his valley. The best scholars could suppose was the valley could be the location of a primordial relic, the Orb of Plagues, or one of its lesser attempted recreations. The orb was said to bring doom and wasting death wherever it lay.
Despite years away from home, and the great distance involved, Kaspar would remain in correspondance with his parents, keeping them advised of what he discovered and in turn they would tell him of how things faired in the valley. This occurred until he received a strange letter, written in a giant crude hand and dictated by his father, warning that the valley's final doom seemed to be at hand - a strange mist or fog would steal the whole land into a nightmare.
Kaspar immediately prepared to return, and to his genuine surprise, the allies he had met and helped to defeat Apophis and her Hyksos sisterhood cult now wished to accompany him.
The first leg of the journey took them up the river Ankhenaten to the holy city of Sarkaen Tair, the seat of All-Knowing Ioun, and the capital of the sphinx kingdom of Khonsuria in search of a caravan willing to take the perilous journey east across the Tashgar marsh, into the rebellious nomad-haunted former Upper Kingdom. Hati'a, the khenra bardess, also carried a package intended for a suspicious agent of the Archfey 'the Harlot', on behalf of the Forgotten King, occasional patron of the party.
In Sarkaen Tair, Kaspar happened to bump into and secure passage east with Fairwind Clan of halflings, with whom Kaspar had first travelled when he left years ago. Taking this as a good omen, a natural closure, the party hired on as support for the caravan.
A strange encounter in the Gloom Marshes
Life in the caravan was a new experience for most of the party, travelling with the nomadic halflings of the open sands and their peculiar traditions, as well as the equally exotic fellow travellers - including a travelling demiplane bookstore, an oathbound "caretaker of forgotten godlings" and other characters.
The first major danger in the journey was the godless Gloom Marshes of Tashgar. This swampy mess of stagnant, Bloodsand-choked water was the home to many strangely malformed spirits, and the ever present threat of meat-hungry lizardfolk, including particularly hulking and ogre-strong gatorfolk, the Ammun. But the most disturbing encounter here began with Ab'a being swept away from the caravan by a shoal of playful and careless marsh elementals. Separated from all safety, the city urchin found herself face to face with someone who claimed to be her from the future.
This older A'ab (whose changed name reflected the loss of her twin, Hati'a), warned of a future where time and reality had been undone by the actions of the party - actions that may have already begun. Ab'a learned from her future self that her sister was gone, that Kaspar risked his soul dabbling in barely understood time magics to prevent events and that many of the party were dead or badly injured by future events. Worse, inferred from her future's reaction to seeing the present time Hati'a, it seemed her twin betrayed them all before dying. But before more information could be shared, the connection between times snapped, and the current party were beset by aberrations drawn to the disruption to time's natural laws - hounds of Tindalos.
Part 2 to come- echoes of the Summer War, and arrival in Knochental.
