please go off about the Zeus hate in the wider community some time because I would love to have this conversation
Oh gods, I'm not sure if you know what you're asking for lol. I could go on for a long time about it, for a variety of reasons.
(I can't add a cut because this is so far down in my drafts that I don't think I'll be able to find it again, even if I tried, so for those uninterested, I just recommend scrolling past this. I'm sorry. 💀)
***TW: MENTIONS OF SA, R*PE, AB*SE, AND OTHER SENSITIVE TOPICS***
----
----
----
----
----
Where to even begin? There are so many faults and flaws within the argument that Zeus is just generally a "bad person". That's the argument I see most often, anyway.
I guess to start, I'll just get right into the controversial stuff: Zeus and sexual assault/rape. I'll start with me personal experience, as an assault and sexual abuse survivor. I can guarantee you that if I felt Zeus was a r*pist or an assaulter, I would not be worshipping him, personally. It would make me wildly uncomfortable, and I feel like it would seriously taint my view of him. So, when people claim that Zeus is a r*pist, or otherwise, I think it's important to acknowledge that you are talking about mythology. Just as the Christian Bible has been heavily influenced by the opinions and thoughts of its writers, Greek mythology works similarly. The surviving stories that was have were written by people who lived in a VERY different society than our modern one. Not only is mythos not meant to be taken literally (unlike Christianity, which is very mythos literal, most of the time), but Greek myths were often very metaphorical or served the main purpose of explaining an natural phenomena. It was also heavily influenced by the culture, at the time, so to understand why so many Greek myths discuss sexual assault, r*pe, and the like, you really need to take a hardcore look at the culture behind the myths. In not doing so, you make yourself look like an uneducated fool, honestly.
And I don't know how many times this had to be fucking said, but the gods are not their myths. Instead of making all these assumptions about them, maybe just, I don't know, talk to them yourself? Maybe do your own research into the behind the scenes of the stories they were featured in? Maybe stop taking mythos so damn literally? Like, even at the time, there has been some talk of historians believing that the ancient Greeks themselves didn't take mythos literally and interpreted the stories more as lessons to be learned. It's kind of obvious that many of these very impossible stories are most likely not what literally happened and are more metaphorical or sometimes even entertaining. The idea of mythic literalism feels like something that is very Christian - although I could be wrong, so do not take my opinion at face value - and frankly, Hellenic religion is not Christianity, it came before Christianity. Taking these myths of Zeus and interpreting them so literally does nothing but harm you as a worshipper and hinder your growth as a Polytheist, in my opinion. Plus, it makes you look bad. Why shit on an entire pantheon of gods? It's just dumb and disrespectful, even outside of mythic literalism stuff.
Another thing: cancel culture is heavily influencing this Zeus debate, in my opinion. People feel the need to "cancel" thousand year old deities who stem from cultures that were vastly different from ours - like, do they not realize how they sound? First of all, that shit was from thousands of years ago; do you not think that the gods have changed since then? Do you not think that they adapt to human culture as it grows and changes? Like, what? Second of all, cancelling gods from a literal ancient civilization is just plain ridiculous and very ahistorical, in my opinion. For real, I cannot stress enough that ancient Greece has a vastly different culture from our own. Shit was genuinely VERY different back then, and topics we now recognize as fucked up we're not recognized as such, back then. And there is nothing you, or anyone else can do, to go back in time and magically change the ancient Greek culture as a whole, so what's even the point of "calling out" this supposed behavior of Zeus? What's the point if he is very different now and interacts very differently with humans? What's the point if you are pulling your "evidence" from stories meant to be largely fictional? Like??? What exactly do you hope to accomplish by shitting on the King of the Gods in modern times with a very different cultural viewpoint? Tell me what you're hoping to achieve. Tell me why you're projecting all of this hatred towards Zeus, a literal fucking GOD, about fictional stories. Go ahead, I'm curious.
Along with all that, it's SO important to consider how Zeus was viewed in ancient times. It's not as though people saw him as a playboy and were like, "Ew, don't worship that god, he's doing all these bad things, blah blah blah." No, Zeus was actually HIGHLY respected. He was considered the King of the Gods, King of Olympus. He was worshipped for SO many different aspects of his and was extremely popular. He represented all kings, in a way, and was on top of everyone, in regards to hierarchical status. He was literally even considered to be the most powerful of all the gods, even instilling fear into the other gods with how strong he was! Like, Zeus wasn't someone to fuck around with or to criticize. I cannot emphasize enough how wildly disrespectful it is to call him shit like a r*pist (again, based on fucking fictional stories, y'all) - this literal King of Kings and God of All. He is ZEUS. He's not some celebrity that got into a scandal and deserves to be called out for their shitty actions. He is fucking ZEUS, people.
Honestly, my anger is very muted, on this topic. I have a lot of just "I'm so done with this debate" energy. Like, personally, I don't know how Zeus can be so patient with these people, especially after such a long time of them bashing him publicly for no good reason, treating him as though he's some celebrity or something that needs to learn his lesson. Human morality cannot be applied to non-human gods. It just can't. That's simply not how it works. They are not human, and I feel like it's very easy for people to forget that, especially when it comes to debates like these. Zeus - not a human, Apollo - not a human, Hermes - not a human. They are gods. Literal gods. Maybe instead of shitting on gods due to their mythical stories people should be focusing on the humans in today's world that are chasing actual harm - current harm, even. Because frankly, there are more important things to focus on.
I literally love Zeus. He is a fantastic god who literally helped me escape from a wildly abusive person. He is the reason I got out of that situation unharmed spiritually. Zeus is not some cruel god who doesn't give a shit about how other people feel. He is a kind, considerate, and thoughtful leader who holds much wisdom and knowledge from his thousands upon thousands of years reigning as King of the Gods and Olympus. He is not indifferent or disrespectful. He is not cocky or rude. And even with the flaws he may have (since everyone makes mistakes), he is still a god who deserves worship, praise, and acknowledgement for his great deeds. There is SO much Zeus does for humanity, outside of just lightning bolts and weather, and I'm just so exhausted from people who refuse to acknowledge that. Zeus is a damn blessing. He is a fucking King. He deserves respect.
That's all I've got to say for now. I'm not much of an angry person, so it takes a lot of energy for me to be mad about something. Thank you for letting me rant. May Zeus be with you, if you so wish. 💜⚡

I don't like omegaverse, the trope just makes me kinda uncomfortable, even though I can see how, if executed well, it can be interesting and ambiguous to read and write. It's just not my thing and I mostly avoid it. But even I have to admit that reading your take on it is not only interesting but also enjoyable, just because you seem to have given it a lot of thought that isn't at all superficial and also because you seem so passionate about it, which I love! ♡
It’s perfectly understandable that a/b/o makes you uncomfortable! When its written wrong, it makes ME uncomfortable. I won’t touch a fic that flips the dynamics I enjoy. I don’t ever begrudge people for not liking the stuff I create, I’m writing it for me and people’ like me.
A/b/o is, and always will be, so so controversial. It is the marmite of fic tropes. Some people hate it, some are indifferent, and some, like me, LOOOOOOOVE it. It’s why I’m so passionate when I talk about it. It is at its core a trope created so that male slash pairings could experience societal and systemic sexism, with bonus werewolf tropes. It’s kinda dumb. Even I think it’s silly when I’m writing it.
But once you flip off that top crust I think there’s a rich opportunity to explore gender and sex expression without having to make a world up from scratch, or risk misrepresenting incredibly fragile topics. I’ve seen it argued before that a/b/o is transphobic and while I understand where those people are coming from, I believe they are categorically wrong. Through a/b/o I’ve seen greater acceptance and understanding of intersex anatomy, and it lets me, as a trans man, impart trauma and issues I experience in my life, on ‘cis’ men. It makes you feel less othered, not having to use the trans label to explore those things because often when writing trans characters I feel burdened to write in a way cis people won’t misrepresent… and sometimes I don’t want to?
Sometimes I want to write about men and heat cycles to impart my feelings about periods, I want to write male pregnancy without it being weird and laughed at. I want to write about how horrifying and gross it can be to feel damp when you don’t want to. How isolating it can feel to not fit with a societal standard of gender, and on the other side the euphoria of living authentically. I want to write about alphas thinking consciously about how their hormones effect others, or how some use that as a weapon. Or about omegas doing comfortable traditionally feminine things like nesting or seeking comfort without it being a big deal? I like writing about alphas who worry about being a slave to hormones, and omegas who are comfortable and confident in their bodies
And that’s just the dynamic part of it. A/b/o has such rich ties to other tropes, like how packs are real, tangible, found families. The soulmatism of scent bonds and bonding as a whole. How body language becomes so much more important that I get to write about it like everyone is living through my lens as an autistic person.
That’s why I guess it feels like I’ve put so much thought into peoples designations and how they relate to each other, cause I have! It’s so interesting; to play with the new webs created by packs and bonds and hormones. How they would effect F1 as a whole and inner team dynamics. It’s stupid but it’s also stupid FUN
Anyone who’s read to the end of this weird little ramble, uh, thank you! And I also wanted to impart a lesson I was taught in my old fandom, which is that’s a/b/o shouldn’t be written without the slashes or not in all caps (ABO) as it is too close to the racial slur used against aboriginal Australians. If you are prone to forget like me, set up a keyboard shortcut that auto corrects ab* to a/b/o, or just use the term omegaverse as the anon did here hahah.

90's Watch: South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut (1999)
Tumblr media
If you'd told me in 1998 or so that South Park, the goofy animated construction-paper show on a young Comedy Central would now be a permanent part of the cultural landscape in 2023, you could have knocked me over with a feather.
Like any 20-something with cable, I was a watcher of the show and in 1999, shocked to see they were going to the big screen.
July 4, 1999, Austin received some rain and fireworks were unlikely.  The folks who'd assembled at our apartment decided to load up and go see the movie to extend our day.  Mostly what I remember was that the theater was only partially full, and almost immediately, people were trickling out.
The notion of "adult animation" is now taken for granted, but "animation" in 1999 was still all-ages in the minds of many, and "for children" in the minds of just as many more.  So I'm sure those moms who took their little Cartmans to see the film had very long talks with their kids on the way home and now had to do the work of parenting and understanding what their kids were watching that they'd hoped basic cable packages would take care of.
And, oh my, did the South Park creators, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, take advantage of what it means to have a hard-R rating.  No one is more foul-mouthed than kids trying on profanity, and to this day, that movie contains some of the most creative uses and best word pictures celebrating a dirty mouth of anything I can think of.  It's kind of glorious.
However, the genuine shock of the film is that it was....  great.  It moves at a rocket pace, it's wildly entertaining, it understands the language and tropes of film and uses them like a Swiss Army knife, it has an evergreen premise and point (one that it's hard to believe the same audience for this movie in 1999 has forgotten in this era as imaginary issues and invisible monsters are the driving platform of a major political party), and the music is as good or better than anything in a musical of the last 40 years.  All while spoofing same.
Like anything dabbling in offensive material, some items were way too much for audiences then, most still plays, and some bits wouldn't make it now without causing distracting controversy.  Man, we loved our homophobic slurs in the late 20th century.
But it seems the little 22 minute homilies of the South Park episodes had well trained Trey Parker in particular (he wrote the music and seems to have been the major force behind the film) to make a thinly veiled point, outline the absurdity of human behavior, take the piss out of it, and move on to the next topic.
If you can't remember, the plot of the film:
Canadian TV stars Terrance and Phillip have their own movie coming out.  As huge Terrance and Phillip fans, the lead kids of SP go to the movie only to find out it's a Rated-R picture, and so after sneaking in, they find out what a Rated-R film might contain in the way of horrendously offensive language.
In addition to bringing the language into school, all of the kids see the movie, and in a moment of post-movie debate about whether one could light a fart on fire IRL, Kenny goes en fuego and, being Kenny, dies.  While Kenny is sent to hell to go negotiate the romantic life of Satan and a manipulative SOB Saddam Hussein, Kyle's mom takes it upon herself to start a literal war with Canada over the potty-mouthed Terrance and Phillip, who are being held for an execution within the US.
I'm skimming, to be sure.
But the point is - it's kind of amazing to see, of all the movies from 1999, this one might feel so evergreen and on point.  Parker and Stone weren't stupid.  Giving them the platform of a film and R rating was going to cause some kerfuffles.  And they also weren't wrong that the parents who paid no attention to what their kids were up to would be mad that those same kids both saw and processed media without the parents paying any damn attention, and managed to deflect blame onto others while also caring way, way too much about their kids defying their expectations and inverting their concern back onto people who had done nothing wrong.
Like I said, people trickled out of the movie, and among those were parents who had somehow selected the South Park movie, driven to see it, paid to see it and sat down for it with their kid and had no idea what they were in for.
Of course the movie is chock-a-block of now dated references and Parker and Stone's peculiar thing of thinking that just showing a celebrity is funny in itself.  Ex: The Winona Ryder bit is confusing (and clearly a failed reference to a scene from Priscilla, Queen of the Desert).  Like, maybe there are insidery LA things about celebrities I don't know, but I don't know them.  So.
It's also a reminder that Mary Kay Bergman passed before the work she did was nominated for an Oscar, as "Blame Canada" was nominated, and, in fact, performed at the 2000 Academy Awards ceremony.  Y'all pour one out for Mary Kay Bergman.
Anyway, it was a delight to watch again.  And, of course, wonder if there isn't room for a Broadway show of the movie.

🏹 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐫: send me anything and let's just talk ab it!! not necessarily obx, but if you want to talk ab characters, theories, anything like that i am absolutely all ears!
myyy second question, thoughts on jiara/jjpope (generally obx ships?)
ooo okay so this is a hot topic and here are my thoughts:
i feel like jjiara was honestly rushed into s3. they're cute, so so so cute and i do really love them together but i haven't been convinced that they were the plan from the beginning, outside of kie homie hopping her way through the group and jj was the only one left. (also that jj mentioned in s1 that he thought she was hot and he 'tried that door and it was closed'.) but yeah they are so cute together and i cannot wait for s4 where we get more of them!!
(also this is NOT me shading kie at all like i am known to homie hop a lil bit there is no shame in it, she's so real for that honestly lol)
okay so this may be the controversial part- i honestly don't ship jjpope, like at all. i really don't see them together in any way other than platonic, BUT they are really cute as friends and i wish we had more content with them as a duo bc they are so iconic and i love their friendship!!
(again, no shade, no hate to people who do ship them!! yall are slaying and i love this energy for you but it's just not my vibe idk i can't get into it)
as far as other ships go i honestly stick to canon bc I'm pretty boring, but i do really wish we got more mashups of different character dynamics together!!

Update: This post ended up being a little more controversial than I anticipated, so I ended up following it up tackling the topic from another angle in a follow-up, “Being Practical”. The web has the power to go anywhere-any network, any device, any browser. That last line right there is why I enjoy working with web technologies. We’ll build things that ensure that entire populations just setting foot on the web for the first time can tap into the collected knowledge of the whole of mankind. You and me, though-we’re gonna work harder than they do. Some people want their paychecks and to go home, and that’s fine. In a recent post on the Pastry Box Mat Marquis talked about browser support and the different views web professionals may take when it comes to their work: This makes little sense no matter if you choose to look at it from a business perspective or an ideological one. Individually it might not seem like much, but with each step you’re cutting off more and more people from being able to access content you’re putting online. When we slam the door on people because of the device they’re using, we’re crippling that super power.Īs you make decisions that don’t include each of these groups you continually reduce the unique power of the web. When we neglect to consider people with accessibility needs, we’re crippling that super power. When we build fat sites that are incredibly slow to load on older devices or slower networks, if they can even load at all, we’re crippling that super power. When we use techniques that work only on top-of-the-line modern browsers, but don’t consider what happens in other browsers, we’re crippling that super power. When we don’t consider what an experience is like without JS, we’re crippling that super power. This is why I tend to get so frustrated when we do things that eliminate that superpower. That ubiquity, that ability to get your information to anyone with a device connected to the web, is incredibly inspiring. This is what excites me about the web and it’s why web technology tends to be my focus. It is the web’s superpower, and its omnipresence is what sets it apart from native platforms. One of the (many) smart things he said was: # accessibility progressive enhancement performanceīack in 2011, Brad Frost wrote a post on Support vs.

Avatar Hot Take #2
Time for another topic that might fuel some backlash and more controversy.
The amount of negative flak given to Aang for kissing Katara when he shouldn’t have in the EIP (Ember Island Players) episode -- compared to how much given to Korra when she first kissed Mako in the SoC (Spirit of Competition) episode -- is ridiculous:
Now let me give y’all a disclaimer right now: I am NOT saying that kissing Katara was the right thing for Aang to do at the time. In fact, I agree that it wasn’t.
With that said, however, nor was kissing Mako the right thing for Korra to do.
Yet why do I see many people calling Aang “selfish”, “entitled”, and even “ab*sive” for his error in the EIP episode? Heck, I’ve seen comments go far enough to imply that Aang should’ve been punched in the face! So would anyone mind telling me exactly where the frick all those kinds of comments are for Korra?
And no, what Aang and Korra did in the EIP and the SoC episodes respectively were not different. They were anything but different. Let’s examine the context of the specific scenario of each of the two episodes, shall we?:
EIP Scenario:
Aang asked Katara if she really meant what she said about seeing him as a “little brother” even though that’s what her actress said. Even after she replied that she herself never said so and only her actress did - implying that she did NOT see him like a brother - Aang still replied, “But it’s true, isn’t it?” Plus, he didn’t even say it with an angry or explosive tone; rather he said it with a clearly saddened yet calm one. This implies that if Katara had bluntly said that she had no romantic interest in him, Aang would’ve ultimately been fine with that.
Aang mentions to Katara the time when they previously and mutually kissed during the Invasion (and yes, it was mutual since Katara kissed back). He also told her that he thought they’d start dating each other by then. However, he acknowledges that they still weren’t together regardless. And Aang was still obviously broken-hearted yet calm when saying all of this. And to be honest, many hints were shown of Katara having at least some romantic interest in Aang such as Katara’s previous cheek kisses she’d only ever given to Aang; her suggesting the idea of kissing in the Cave of Two Lovers; and etc. So Aang really wasn’t wrong to believe that she wanted to be with him.
Afterwards, Katara solemnly says, “Aang, I don’t know.” Aang then asks, “Why don’t you know?” Katara explains, “’Cause we’re in the middle of a war, and we have other things to worry about. This isn’t the right time.” “Well, when is the right time?” Aang asked. “Aang, I’m sorry, but right now, I’m just a little confused,” Katara said as an ultimatum. So right here, Katara doesn’t say that she doesn’t want to date Aang at all. Rather, she doesn’t whether she actually will be able to or not since they were fighting in the war, and Aang still had yet to face the firelord. And at the time, neither Katara nor Aang knew how much longer the war would last, nor did either of them know if they’d still end up alive by the end of it. Aang, however, didn’t understand that. Rather, he started growing impatient, for he wanted to get a clear and direct confirmation from Katara herself if wanted to be with him or not -- which wasn’t exactly what she gave him.
And as we all know, Aang non-consensually tries to kiss Katara afterwards; she immediately pulls herself away from the attempted kiss, shouted at him for it, and stormed off. This part doesn’t need any explanations.
SoC:
Korra told Mako, “Save your breath. You’ve already made it clear how you feel about me.” “No, I haven’t. What I’m trying to say is as much as you drive me crazy, I also think you’re pretty amazing,” Mako replied. So right here, it’s blatantly made clear that Mako likes Korra back.
“So you do like me?” Korra asked. “Yes,” Mako sighed with uncertainty, “but I like Asami too. I don’t know. Things are complicated. I’m feeling really confused, and -- .” Then, as most of us know, Korra interrupted Mako with a non-consensual kiss, yet Mako kissed back regardless. Bolin, seeing it all, broken-heartedly runs off bawling. Mako and Korra blow up into an short argument about it, and Mako storms off as a result. So basically, what made Mako confused was that he romantically liked his girlfriend at the time, Asami, and Korra; he didn’t know he should’ve decided what to do about that.
So in both scenarios, Katara and Mako, at the very least, reciprocated Aang’s and Korra’s interests in them repsectively (even if it possibly was to a lesser extent). And yes, Katara DID develop romantic feelings for Aang. Hints proving so existed, as subtle as they may have been. However, Katara and Mako also explicitly said that they were confused, yet Aang and Korra still kissed them regardless. So really, there’s nothing that suggests that Korra kissing Mako in the SoC episode was more okay than Aang kissing Katara in the EIP episode.
Heck, I’d even argue that Korra’s kiss was actually even worse than Aang’s. Like I said before, Mako was already dating Asami at the time -- and Korra knew that herself! And while albeit Korra really was seeing mostly as a platonic hangout, she was technically dating Bolin as well; therefore, she ended up ripping Bolin’s heart when he saw her kiss his brother. It doesn’t matter if Mako kissed Korra back unlike Katara with Aang. You don’t kiss someone who already has a significant other. So if any of you anti-kataangers really want to preach about consent, then you ought to be talking about Korra more.
Now let me get one more disclaimer out of the way: I’m NOT saying all of this to bash on Korra or her relationship with Mako! Just like Aang — who angrily called himself an idiot after realizing his mistake of kissing Katara at an inappropriate time — Korra realized her mistake very soon after. In fact, we even get to see Korra apologize to Bolin for breaking his heart. For me to bash on Korra and her relationship with Mako, I’d have to end up bashing on Aang and his relationship with Katara — and that’s DEFINITELY NOT the purpose of this post.
TL;DR: Cut the double standards! Either bash on both Aang and Korra for their inappropriately-timed kisses or don’t bash either of them at all!

This Needs To Stop.
Trigger warning: Sensitive topics, p*dopilia, grooming, mental health and r*cism.
Ok so this is a bit of a rant so apologies for that, I usually try to stay away from sensitive or controversial topics but this is something that I am passionate about and that I think is important. Also I just want to say that I am in no way directing this to the entirety of the M*lina fandom, I know most are just enjoying their ship, but there are those few who are deliberately seeking out darklina posts or are cross tagging and coming into darklina’s asks and just generally harassing the fandom which sadly I am seeing happen more and more often. Also I do feel like this can apply to all fandoms not just exclusively shadow and bone/ grishaverse, its just this is the one I am experiencing it in right now.
I’ve seen antis call darkling/darklina fans many problematic things, delusional, mentally ill, ab*se apologists. They also like throwing around words like grooming and p*dophile. The thing that makes me angry about this is that they are taking sensitive topics, topics that many users have been effected by and they are using them to attack shippers merely for liking a character or ship that they don’t. What is even more frustrating is they seem to be throwing these words around without evening fully understanding what they even mean. For example the claim that the Darkling is a p*dophile because Alina is only 17 in the books. Well p*dophilia is a psychiatric disorder where adults are attracted to children and in order for it to be classed as p*dophilia the child involved has to be 13 or younger. A 16 year old can be diagnosed as a p*dophile if they become attracted to a child that is five years or more younger than them. So the relationship between the Darkling and Alina does not meet the criteria to be categorised this way as Alina is over the age of 13. As for it being a case of Alina is underaged, well, for one that depends on where in the world you are. This is based on imperial russia, in russia the age of consent is 16. This means that a 16 year old can have a sexual relationship with a 30 year old, a 70 year old or a 500 year old immortal and in a court of law it is still legal, whatever your own moral issues around age gaps might be. Even then it can be argued that it is irrelevant because, as with most historical literature where young girls marry older men, you cannot put modern day concepts onto them. Like I said this story is based on Imperial Russia, the life expectancy of a person in that time was around 30 years old. That means a 15 year old girl is already half way through her life, she is literally middle aged. It is at this point usually that girls started to prepare to get married and have children and yes sometimes it was to an older man because men were expected to provide for their wife and family which means having a house and job and means to support a family which an older man was more likely to have. My point is a 15-17 year old in say Imperial Russia is not the same as a 15-17 year old in modern day therefore you can’t take modern day laws and morals and place them onto that situation, it doesn’t work, they lived completely different lives. In Alina’s world, she is at the age where girls might get married and her being courted by a man of the general’s status would have been a normal occurrence, for her to have caught the attention of someone with his standing would have been considered very advantageous for her. I mean she literally gets two marriage proposals in book 2, where I believe she is still 17, and Nikolai is talking about how if she marries him it’ll be in name only and they can make Mal her guard so she can do the horizontal tango with him whenever she feels like it, so clearly the characters themselves feel like Alina is at an age where she can, one get married, and two be engaging in a sexual relationship.
So why does all of this matter? Well it matters because people reading these posts, asks and comments left on posts, may be victims of p*dophilia and grooming. A lot of these comments don’t have trigger warnings and when you are talking about sensitive and triggering topics like this you need to be careful and when you are talking about them without even really understanding them, and where they can’t apply to the characters you are talking about anyway, then you are potentially triggering someone needlessly because you didn’t need to be talking about it in the first place, I hope I am making sense there. I am not saying don’t talk about these subjects if you do think they are relevant, I am saying make sure you do the research, that you understand the subject you are addressing and when you do talk about it do it in a respectful manner, don’t throw it out there in an angry spew accompanied by alot of other derogatory words because that won’t help anyone.
Another subject I want to talk about is I am also seeing a lot of posts about how darklinas must be delusional or mentally unwell. This, again, is hurtful and harmful. Mental illness for a very long time has had a stigma around it, one that makes the person suffering from it feel weak and ashamed. There was always the attitude of if you are mentally ill then there is something wrong with you, or the attitude of oh just get over it, cheer up, think a different way. But mental illness isn’t just a state of emotion its often caused by hormonal imbalances and chemicals. Genetics can also play a part. There is nothing wrong with someone who is mentally ill their brain is just wired a different way. I also find it problematic when people throw around the word delusional. Maybe its nothing to you, just a word, but alot of mental illnesses have actual delusions as one of their symptoms. These can be scary and upsetting and are outside the control of the person experiencing them. Making the suggestion that liking a particular ships means you are delusional is potentially very triggering to those who do battle delusions and have fought to overcome them. The stigma around mental illness has prevented alot of people suffering from mental illness from seeking help out of shame or embarrassment or even out of fear of being judged and although I do feel like as a society we’ve become alot more open about mental health and alot more accepting there is still a long way to go. When antis start saying things like ‘I can’t believe people ship this, they must be mentally ill,’ or ‘they must be sick in the head’, or ‘if you like this ship than you must be delusional’ not only are they being incredibly prejudice against people who have mental illnesses but it is also so harmful because if there is someone reading that post who is struggling with their mental health and are considering seeking help then you’ve just made them feel more ashamed, more like there is something wrong with them which will make them even less likely to seek out help and as I said before there isn’t anything wrong with a person who has a mental health condition they are just different from you. That doesn’t give you the right to make them feel like they are less capable of deciding what they do or do not like or even what they should or should not like to be classified as a ‘normal’ person.
The most latest problematic statements I’ve seen have been those accusing Darklina’s of being r*cist. This one I found a bit funny in a it’s not funny kind of way. I just don’t think there is much logic behind this view point. I’m not sure I understand the antis reasoning here. Mostly because I’m pretty sure the majority of the Darklina fandom comes from the books where Mal is described as being a white, brown haired, blue eyed guy. Funnily enough the Darkling is described as being able to pass for Shu, though to be clear it isn’t confirmed that he is a POC, but out of the two in the books the Darkling is more likely to be a POC than Mal. On top of that whilst many darklina fans have made it clear they are not a fan of Mal in the books many have said they like the show version of Mal who, as we all know, the actor Archie is a POC. So by anti logic darklinas are all r*cist because they don’t like book Mal who is depicted as white but we do like show Mal who is a POC. It just doesn’t make sense to me. I do understand that there were some ‘fans’ who made inappropriate and r*cist comments to some cast members including Archie and I would never ever condone that no matter who I ship. But you also can’t condemn an entire fandom just because of the actions of a select few. I don’t judge all M*linas for that one fan who accused Ben of being a pr*dator and p*dophile because of his friendship with Jessie. Once again my point is r*cism is a serious topic and not something someone should use as a retort or comeback to someone not shipping your ship. When we use these words casually it makes it less likely that they’ll be taking seriously when they really do need to be taken seriously, when they really are relevant to what is happening. If we keep using them so casually then when we really do need to talk about them, when it really matters, people will just shrug and go ‘its just antis being antis.’
I think it is possible for people to like different things, to debate and analyse different relationships and characters and talk about what flaws they may have in a respectful manner. I wouldn’t say I am anti m*lina but at the same time there are things about them that I find problematic but when I talk about those things I hope I do so in a way that doesn’t demean those who do like the ship. I understand that people will have a different interpretation than me and whilst I might not understand where their thinking comes from or why they have a particular opinion I would never make the assumption that they are mentally unwell or make judgements on their character or morals. I try to think about the words I am writing. I know how easy it can be to just throw a word out there without thinking about it. I used to use the word delusional to describe fans of certain ships, but when I recognised how damaging and problematic that was I stopped and I changed my behaviour because it was never my intention to hurt others. I guess the main message I am trying to convey here is we need to be careful with our words they’re not as insignificant as we might think.

someone mentioned a few days ago that it's so funny how "cancelling" literally started as a joke amongst teenagers on social media and now grown ass adults are using it as like the basis of their political beliefs or whatever and just sknjsks it's true. it's true. i fucking cannot believe that people legitimately think cancel culture exists like I won't pretend sometimes small mistakes get exaggerated by people for woke points but people legitimately think calling out people for racism/homophobia/transphobia/pedophilia is cancel culture like HOW did we get to this point?? and no celebrity has ever lost their money or jobs for being bigoted like its really not a fucking thing outside of the internet. i wish the internet wasn't so prevalent that people think it's exactly reflective of reality. like james gunn made pedophilia "jokes" and (temporarily) lost his job and people were like "ugh that was TEN years ago cancel culture is so vile" like ten years ago the man was thirty years old??? thirty years old and making jokes about having sex with children and you think he shouldn't face consequences? absolutely absurd
omg EXACTLY!!! speak on it literally literally literally. if i could paste this on every billboard on planet earth i would dude. it is insane. it’d be funny if it wasn’t having real world consequences. seeing actual politicians and like, esteemed journalists even uttering the words cancel culture in any serious capacity - pissbabies. literal pissbabies who see genuine issues that have been prevalent in society for centuries as nothing more than internet talking points. acting as if cancel culture is some deadly exaggeration of PC culture or whatever the fuck they call it, acting like ppl are being policed and silenced because the younger generations r just that sensitive - HELLO they’re not the one manufacturing outrage so they have a controversial topic to monetize and complain about??? and if they would look up from facebook for two fucking seconds they would see that the people being monitored and censored are not the famous rich white conservatives who cry ab this shit. i literally think half the time ppl just like the weird sense of superiority they get by being able to say well I’M not offended. even though the very ppl who say that usually get triggered by marginalized groups just existing. also it’s so clear they’re just doing it to further polarize serious issues nd divide the working class. case in point there was a million different headlines the other month about how gen z were cancelling dr suess waaaa!! what was actually happening was that some of his works were being recalled from shelves because they had literal racist tropes in them. they are ridiculous. any excuse to get away with normalizing oppressive structures by painting any reaction to them as over the top or whiny. also so true!!! everyone knows that teenagers calling a celebrity out on twitter will not put a dent in their bag or their livelihoods because in the real world they still very much have all of the power hello we r living in a capitalist society. they are literally fine. half the time they could get away w fucking murder. also god what the fuck that’s disgusting..........imagine hearing a grown man joke about being a pedo and fixing your mouth to defend him. for what. honestly for what. how did he only temporarily lose his job. i mean i know how but. we r in hell

FEATURE: How the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami Influenced Anime Over the Past Decade
Tumblr media
Image via Netflix
In a single moment, everything changed; after one great shake of the earth, the world was never the same again. Today marks the 10th anniversary of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, also known as 3.11 in Japan. At a magnitude of 9.0, it was the biggest earthquake to ever hit the island. The earthquake, and the subsequent tsunami that followed, also killed an estimated 15,899, injured 6,157, and was the most expensive natural disaster in history. The meltdown of the Fukushima Daini Nuclear Power Plant followed — rendering parts of Japan uninhabitable to this day — with many still unable to go back to their home even ten years on.
The shaking was felt all the way in Tokyo and beyond, leaving physical scars on the world’s biggest metropolitan area. This was nothing compared to the devastation seen in the prefectures of Miyagi, Fukushima, and Iwate. For those who lived through the event, whether that be in Tohoku or Tokyo, the feelings of that day have left psychological scars that have influenced their daily lives.

Aftershocks from the seismic event can still be felt even today: a magnitude 7.3 earthquake hit the region a little under a month ago, raising fears that another big quake could shake Japan at any time in the near future.
For creators living in Japan, these overwhelming emotions have manifested in their works. Creators such as Hayao Miyazaki, Masaaki Yuasa, Hideaki Anno, and Makoto Shinkai have internalized the events that transpired in their backyard and used 3.11 to help spread awareness, unravel some of the hanging threads, or even try and bring hope and happiness to fans.

Hayao Miyazaki isn’t one to mince words and always just gets on with the job. A few weeks after 3.11, the Studio Ghibli director introduced his son’s latest work at the time, From Up on Poppy Hill. While Miyazaki tried to keep the press focused on the film, inevitably the topic of the tragedy from two weeks ago arose. Responding to why he felt it was okay to hold a press conference after the earthquake, Miyazaki spoke about his local bakery, explaining that “the old man at the bakery where I always buy dumplings and sweets has continued to make bread. That's why I think we should keep making movies.”
At the time, Miyazaki dismissed the thought that 3.11 would affect how he made his next work. But in a 2013 interview with Jiji upon the release of his then “final work” The Wind Rises, the director said the film “has not been affected by the earthquake or the nuclear accident. [The idea] was there from the beginning. I think that the times have caught up with us and overtaken us.” The Wind Rises contains a very realistic – almost chilling – interpretation of the 1923 Great Kanto earthquake.

For Japan Sinks 2020, Masaaki Yuasa used some of his own experiences to highlight how characters would be feeling in the moment. In multiple scenes, the main characters are left worrying about what is going on without a clear line of communication – in fact, sometimes getting misinformation from sources not fully aware of the situation.
Yuasa himself explained in an interview in AnimeAnime that he felt like he didn’t know what was the “correct information” when he felt the quake in Tokyo in 2011. As he looked for information online, he heard rumors that Tokyo was in imminent danger. He was scared. Reflecting, Yuasa knew in his “heart” that he wasn’t as scared as those in the Tohoku region, but was “horrified” by what he saw on the news. Yuasa used a lot of those emotions he felt at the time to aid in telling the Japan Sinks 2020 story.

But it wasn’t just anime creators who were affected by 3.11. The 8th part of the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure manga series, JoJolion, debuted only a few months after the quake in 2011. Set in a town called Morioh (similar to the town in Diamond is Unbreakable), the location is based on manga creator Hirohiko Araki’s hometown of Sendai. The manga was being conceptualized when the earthquake occurred and Araki felt that he “couldn't avoid” touching on the subject in the series, he said in an Asashi Shimbun interview in 2014.
Araki’s family home, which had been around for 14 generations, was also swept away in the tsunami. He added that was shocked at the loss of his childhood home and felt that he should draw manga to bring entertainment to readers and fans.
Araki wasn’t the only manga creator to touch on the events of 3.11 in their long-running series. Tetsu Kariya’s long-running series Oshinbo touched on some controversial aspects of the aftermath of the tragedy, with one of the characters in the series suffering from a nosebleed after being in the town of Futaba – a town that is still not open to the public.
This caused an outcry with government officials on the national and prefectural level, with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe saying that “the government will make the best effort to take action against baseless rumors” in reference to the manga. These protests saw the collected volume version of the arc change some of the wording slightly as to “clarify the intention of what was said," and that "some of the characters' lines have been altered.” The series has been on hiatus after the arc ended two chapters later in May 2014.

The Japanese government was also at the forefront of Hideaki Anno’s 2016 film Shin Godzilla, with many reviewers noting the similarities between the government in the film and what had occurred in the aftermath of 3.11. As Godzilla walks the neighborhoods of Kanagawa, waters rise, boats come ashore, and people are fleeing en-masse, meanwhile, the government is claiming that everything will be okay.
This sharp social satire of the events may be skin deep as the film goes on, but exposes the fact that Japan has a recent event that is very real and emotive to reference. Shin Godzilla Producer Akihiro Yamauchi explained in a 2016 Nippon.com interview that 3.11 “changed Japan more than anything else in the past 12 years.” He went on to say that the film had the option of “escaping into fantasy...but Anno-san and I talked it over and we both agreed that an approach like that would be meaningless.”

Makoto Shinkai’s 2016 movie Your Name, was directly influenced by the 2011 earthquake and the change in the psyche of the Japanese people. Taki, the male protagonist, at one moment in the movie says “You will never know when Tokyo could become like this,” vocalizing the fear that festers away in many people living in Japan.
Genki Kawamura, a producer on both Your Name and Weathering with You, explained at a discussion at the Aoyama Shachu think tank in 2019 that “Your Name is aware of the Great East Japan earthquake.” Shinkai later explained in a 2017 interview with Huffington Post Japan that the disaster aspect of Your Name is only the underlying layer of the film, and the film had to end the way it did for it to feel complete to both him and the audience.
In a 2018 Makoto Shinkai Exhibition in Sendai, the first prototype sketch drawn of Your Name by Shinkai was shown to the public. It depicted the area of Yuriage in Natori City, Miyagi prefecture, which was completely wiped out in the tsunami. The population of the area only had 30 minutes to evacuate before waters overtook the town. There weren’t many survivors.
Tumblr media
  Image via Asahi Shimbun
Shinkai visited the area of Yuriage in July 2011 and drew the sketch shortly after, which later became the springboard for what then became Your Name. He said solemnly in a TBS program “This could have been my town.”
Shinkai explained in the Huffington Post interview that 3.11 changed the way people in Japan thought about the world. "Before they’d think that “somehow...Japanese society will continue as it is," he said. "But since 2011, I think that idea has collapsed. The town does not remain a town forever.”
Because of this, Shinkai decided to focus on the little things that made up life: A late train, cutting up food, texting. Shinkai thought it was “necessary to draw meaning from the monotony of daily life.” Nowadays these beautifully crafted moments from Shinkai’s works are shared online as some sort of social media anime ASMR.
In the end, Shinkai’s main driving factor for the film was to make the audience “happy.” And it struck a chord with a wide audience, as the film would later go on to become the third highest-grossing anime film of all time worldwide.

As we look back at how one event changed the world view of many, it’s good to know that despite the hardships faced in the unexpected, the desire to create and bring smiles to audiences perseveres. Many creators have used 3.11 as a chance to reflect, and it's only to be seen how the long tail of 3.11 continues to impact creators and their works.
The Tohoku region is still feeling the effects of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, with families torn apart and homes unable to be returned to. Japan NPO Center has a website set up with ways to donate to local charities and not-for-profit organizations within the Tohoku region that has been set up to serve affected communities.

a Serious Post™
check tags for trigger warnings
so, i’m almost finished writing my post about chest binding, and it should be up in the next few days. but every time i make an in-depth post like that, it usually grants me an influx of followers and asks. so that being said, i want to address something with my ask box:
there are certain things that are not appropriate to ask someone.
if you’ve read my ask posts, you know i try to give helpful answers, and will research things i don’t know about or don’t have a lot of experience with. that willingness to do research means that almost nothing is off limits. if you want to ask me what my favourite colour is, do it. if you want to send an ask celebrating a step in your transition, please do. if you want an in-depth post about the health risks of testosterone or top surgery and all the things that can go wrong, ask.
we can talk about light topics, we can talk about heavy topics. i will do my best to answer everything. but there are certain things that i need you all to understand are not okay to ask me
do not ask me how to come out to unsupportive parents. some of you might know that my own coming out experience wasn’t great, and that there were a lot of consequences. i don’t know how to safely come out to transphobic people. i failed to do so myself. if you simply don’t know how to bring up the topic, feel free to ask ! if you’re not sure how to come out at school, ask ! if you don’t know how to explain it to your friends, ask ! but don’t send me an ask saying “my parents are really transphobic and might kick me out if they know i’m trans. how do i come out to them ?” first of all, my advice is going to be don’t. if you think you’ll be in danger, don’t come out. but second of all, i am not an expert and i fucked up my own coming out experience. i don’t want to put someone in danger by giving them bad advice.
do not ask me to talk about discourse. on occasion i’ll post something about dysphoria or someone problematic, but my blog is primarily to offer HELP and ADVICE to trans people. don’t ask me about jk rowling, don’t ask me about trans influencers, don’t ask for controversial or “problematic” opinions. that’s not what this blog is for. if it’s something political that you want me to talk about, like trans health care, that’s one thing. that’s important and it affects us and i understand wanting to open a conversation about it. but don’t come in my ask box and say “hey did you hear what this person said ?” i do not answer asks about discourse.
do not ask heavy questions about mental health. if you want to ask “hey do you have any suggestions on how to alleviate ____ dysphoria”, i will answer and try to help you. but do not come into my ask box and ask me how to help you with s*icidal thoughts, s*lf h*rm, s*xual/domestic ab*se, severe depression, trauma, etc. i don’t know. i am 17, i am not a mental health specialist. not only can those topics be triggering to receive asks about, i don’t want to give advice that will cause more harm than good. those topics require professional help, and i encourage you to seek it. if i could help, i would, but i am not qualified to do so.
do not ask super personal questions. i’m a pretty open person, i’ll talk about a lot, but some things are blatantly inappropriate to ask. don’t ask about my sex life, do not ask about my trauma, do not ask about my family, do not ask about my coming out experience, don’t ask for my fucking deadname. that’s not appropriate to ask anyone, for the record, but especially not a 17 year old.
do not send me creepy asks. i have shared some pictures of me, i think in 3 different posts, and every time i do i get anonymous asks saying weird, creepy shit. don’t call me sexy, don’t ask to be my sugar daddy, don’t say sexual things. i am 17. a minor. a ✨ child ✨. but beyond that, don’t make those comments to ANYONE who doesn’t want to receive them . especially not strangers, damn. i don’t mind harmless compliments, but anything beyond that is not okay.
i’m not asking for a lot, guys. just some basic respect and consideration. i don’t answer asks i find inappropriate, but it makes it really hard to actually help people when my inbox is flooded with asks that i have expressed before that i don’t want to answer.
that being said, i do appreciate getting asks and i enjoy helping my community, and it’s cool that people trust me to give advice. have a great day/night, you guys are great, and hopefully that binding post will be up soon

Who is Nicole as an Interpreter?
When I was a child, it was effortless to let nature speak to me as I interpreted my surroundings outdoors. I wasn’t so interested in long verbal explanations from adults or the nitty gritty of facts – I felt as though I understood plants, animals, and the abiotic aspects nature through my own lens. As I’ve grown older, I’ve searched for tangible, scientific explanations to describe the phenomena of life around me (there will however always be a metaphysical aspect of communication between myself and nature). My younger self and my older self represent two different types of learners: intuitors (my child-self) and sensors (my older-self) (Beck et al. 2018).These are two of the many types of audiences that I hope my nature interpretation will reach.
Tumblr media
My younger self talking with the flowers (1999)
My ideal role as an environmental interpreter would include reaching as many audiences as possible regardless of age or any other demographics. As Beck et al. (2018) stated, at the end of the day, the interpreter’s clients are everyone. I believe clients with diversification in terms of religion, culture, and life-experiences will allow for myself as an interpreter to gain more perspectives and broaden my own horizons; I therefore welcome everyone with open arms!
In terms of location, I would particularly enjoy forest sites including national/provincial parks or conservation areas. I am particularly passionate about herbal healing modalities and wild edibles, and I believe tying that knowledge into interpretation could be very beneficial, useful, and interesting for my audience! I’m still thinking of ways to tie this passion into nature interpretation because I believe my love for these topics will shine through in a discussion, making the visit more comfortable and enjoyable for the everyone.

One skill that I would adapt would be taking a tangible object such as a mountain, tree, rock, etc. and providing it with an intangible meaning. For example, a rock could represent triumph and a stream could represent romantic passion, depending on their contexts and interpretation. Through providing these physical factors with abstract meaning, the full spirit of the site can emerge (Beck et al. 2018). Another skill that I will adapt is actively utilizing the multiple intelligences theory to engage my wide range of audiences. Because the learning styles theory is controversial in terms of whether it’s a neuromyth, I prefer the multiple intelligences approach for better understanding what visitors are receptive to and enjoy (Papadatou-Pastou et al. 2018).
One thing that surprised me about the role of an environmental interpreter is how careful one must be when discussing anything outside of nature. When initially pondering an interpreter’s role, I didn’t think about the potential for a political or religious comment to compromise an interpretive message being received. It does however make a lot of sense in today’s social climate. Were there any aspects about being an interpreter that surprised you? Do you think religion and/or politics have a place in nature interpretation? I can understand why religion may be tied into the interpretation of some sites or museums because religion plays a large role in some historical and present-day cultures.
Regardless, I’m happy that we do have something that unites most, if not all of us – the innate beauty of nature.

Too Late the Hero
It was Harvey Dent who uttered the famous lines, “You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become the villain.” A foreshadowing statement, as Dent later on personifies his very words when he goes on to become Two Face in the “The Dark Knight” Batman movies.
Tumblr media
This statement cannot be any truer, and we all can recount both real-life and fictional characters who easily represent this notion. The true-to-life “villains” we know of today may have actually started out as idealists, heroes, or savior-like archetypes that we used to looked up to – and looked past whatever side blemishes they also possessed in order to justify their actions. I think the best contemporary example of this – is the person whom Filipinos notoriously love to discuss nowadays – the person that needs no introduction, President Duterte.
About to Croak?
President Duterte has recently been the talk of the town all the more when rumors circulated that he may have contracted COVID-19, while other rumors pointedly said that he was already on his deathbed. To augment such rumors, it was said that he may have allegedly even flown to Singapore to have himself checked. His office was quick to quash any such news by posting proof of life photos of the President, where he is seen to be eating a meal with the first family in Davao. Well, one thing we can all agree on however, is that he did not look his best.
The more significant and underlying message in this recent raucous is that, the general consensus on social media is that many had their fingers crossed for a new President. It looks like Duterte’s star power is quickly fading.
Tumblr media
RUDY and RODY
I was reminded of a conversation that a friend and I had around three weeks ago. During our usual, light political banter, I suddenly remembered how my parents used to compare President Duterte to American political icon, “Rudy” Giuliani. Quite serendipitously (and as though Netflix read my phone messages or possibly my mind), minutes later, I came across a new Netflix documentary entitled “Fear City: New York vs. The Mafia” where Giuliani is documented to have played a significant role in.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This true crime documentary examines the rise and fall of organized crime in New York in the 1970s to early 1980s. It narrates the dark tale of how the Big Apple once transformed into the playground of underbelly operations of The Mafia – composed of the five major Italian-American crime families and their sophisticated network of ruthless henchmen. Law enforcers could not put a stop to their rings of crime, or even implicate them, and others that dared come close, found themselves or their loved ones in a rather, messy situation. These crime families of Italian descent were basically your true-to-life gangsters from which The Godfather Trilogy was based on.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Batman, Robin and Commissioner Gordon in Gotham City
Bringing down the Mob back then was a feat everyone thought impossible. Nevertheless, joint forces between the FBI and Giuliani (then U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York; 1983 -1989), and his handpicked team of prosecutors were able to do so – and with much required grit and tenacity. Giuliani especially, was credited to be the single piece of rice that tipped the scale in this momentous moment in the history of criminal justice. After which, Giuliani’s political career began to skyrocket. Despite losing his first election in 1989, he eventually gets elected Mayor of New York in 1993, and then reelected in 1997 to hold the position until 2001.
Tumblr media
During his term as Mayor of New York, Giuliani’s most popular platform was his “toughness on crime.” Such that, the gentrification, revitalization and “clean-up” of New York and significant decrease in crime rates during those heyday years are largely attributed to him. His appointment of NYPD Chief of Police, Bill Bratton also proved effective, and is often the popular topic of business case studies today. Bratton did not resort to brute force alone. In fact, he was said to be data-driven, resourceful and efficient. His non-traditional, out-of-the-box thinking, many would agree, had indeed brought about real, lasting positive change in New York.
Tumblr media
Giuliani was also known for making popular what is known as the “perp walk”, wherein he would orchestrate public arrests, worthy of media frenzies and major headlines, of high-profile suspects, usually of white-collar crimes. The nature of these arrests garnered some criticism of course, but it was not enough then to tarnish his image and push him far away from the good graces of the American people, especially New Yorkers. He is also highly commended for his post-9/11 (2001) disaster responses and was even knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for these tremendous efforts. He was even named TIME magazine's Person of the Year in 2001.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
 Fall from Grace
However, fast forward years later to now 2020, many of Giuliani’s constituents and longtime supporters who once held “America’s Mayor” of the highest esteem, often say that the Rudy Giuliani of the past is long gone. Embroiled in various controversies and investigations, not to mention issues that involve being President Trump’s current legal adviser, he has said to have become the very type of white-collar “perps” he used to round up and arrest. It is quite unfortunate, isn’t it, these kind of tragic hero to zero stories. Time is not on his side now, but who knows if there is still a chance for a comeback.
Rudy Giuliani’s story sounds very familiar.
Tumblr media
Rody
Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, in Davao, Philippines to be exact, during the same time that Rudy Giuliani was rising to fame, there lived and breathed another Mayor with a very similar tough guy image – Rodrigo “Rody” Duterte. An attorney as well, he also began his career in the prosecutor’s office.
Tumblr media
Photo taken from The New York Times: Rodrigo Duterte posing with an Uzi submachine gun in 1994, when he was mayor of Davao City in the Philippines.
Tumblr media
 Duterte Harry
Duterte “made his bones” by allegedly taking crime into his own hands. Before assuming the Presidency, he was known as the gun-toting, smart-talkin’, fearless and tough Mayor who cleaned up Davao which back then, was supposedly a war-torn region due to the emergence of the New People’s Army (NPA) post Marcos-regime. People nodded in approval because he produced “quick” results.
If Rudy Giuliani had his Chief of Police, Bill Bratton and the NYPD, Rody Duterte had a comparable squad as well. With the help of his elite unit of police enforcers, coined as the “Davao Death Squad” (DDS), they were able to arrest crime suspects, such as alleged (but non-convicted) drug dealers and petty thieves and parade them throughout the streets, for behold, all to know and see. This sounds like the Filipino version of a perp walk. In extreme cases, sometimes suspects were allegedly found dead in alleys or eskinitas, their bloody bodies mutilated.
Yet, it could be said that quite a number of Davaoenos, as well as Filipinos beyond the Mindanao region, supported this kind of vigilante method because they felt safer, and they felt that finally, the wheels of justice were turning. To simplify this narrative by using a fictional analogy again, it is the same train of thought on why we have a great admiration for Batman and the like.
Many believed this was what the Philippines truly needed - a “strongman” to discipline the country, which to be fair, is an idea that can understandably seem like the right and sound solution, given the Philippines’s web of problems. Not many are willing to further dissect, assess and accept what is truly needed to lead the Philippines. Duterte’s notoriety thus gained much popularity, and his savior persona spread like wildfire throughout the country, propelling him to the Presidential seat in 2016.
One-Trick Pony in a Small Pond
Four years later, come 2020, and here we are, amidst a terrible pandemic with no signs of turning the tide in favor of a victory. I’ve heard one too many times, friends and colleagues say how they despise being a Filipino, and are looking for opportunities to leave and start a new life elsewhere immediately. I can’t say I blame them.
Tumblr media
The once highly respected and beloved Davao Mayor has become the Philippines’s Public enemy number one, for reasons we all know today such as, but not limited to:
Militaristic and shotgun approaches instead of “comprehensive, scientific and systematic policies” to mitigate the pandemic  (Read: Lives vs Livelihood Tradeoff?, August 5, 2020)
Lack of economic and fiscal planning and No transparency on stimulus packages and foreign loans (Read: A Perfect Storm, May 22, 2020)
Preferential treatment towards those in positions of power and unequal application of the law (Read: On lockdown and pushed over the edge, April 30, 2020)
Playing Russian Roulette on community quarantine implementations
Deflecting faults and shortcomings through the “Pasaway citizen” narrative
Demeaning local government leaders/efforts when they come up with their own local initiatives
Putting China’s interests ahead of the Philippines (Read: From Ugly Duckling to Black Swan, April 3, 2020)
And some of the more specific controversies that we can’t help but feel overwhelming emotions for:
Trial of Maria Ressa and his attack on free press and journalism
Shutdown of ABS-CBN which includes 11,000 employees to lose their jobs during a time like this
Inaction of recent PhilHealth scandal
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Perhaps si Mayor should have stayed as Mayor, or perhaps evolved to a different role beyond public service, instead of eyeing gargantuan tasks too big for him to handle. He may have been “effective” as Davao’s Mayor, but running a country is a whole different ballgame.
It was in fact, the late Miriam Santiago, during the final 2016 Presidential debate held in Dagupan, Pangasinan (April 24, 2016) who pointed out, “We are not choosing a manager, administrator, etc. We are choosing the next President of the Philippines for the next 6 years.“ She even went on to enumerate three minimum criteria that a President must have in his or her arsenal in order to effectively lead, such as “1) Academic Excellence; 2) Professional Excellence, and 3) Moral Integrity” – all of which majority Filipinos flippantly shrugged off as useless qualities. I agreed with her which is why I voted for Mar Roxas. Maybe those who voted for Duterte regret this decision now, and hopefully see the wisdom behind Santiago’s statements.
As I’ve said many times over, Duterte peddled a dream that the Philippines can only be great again with an “iron-fisted” leader, and sadly but quite expectedly, our misinformed voters ate it all up - hook, line and sinker. (Read: ORAS NA, April 26, 2016).
I’d like to believe that Duterte perhaps started out as an idealist, with the genuine desire to carve out change where he thought he could. However, somewhere along the way, he lost himself and what he stood for when he let his ego get in the way. I think he himself now knows, but cannot admit to the public, that a one-trick pony has no business leading a highly complex, difficult and problematic country such as the Philippines.
Tumblr media
More Analogies in 2020: The Year of the Rat led by the Pied Piper
Other than Duterte, three other political personalities that will forever be remembered as the shameful faces of the COVID-19 situation in the Philippines are Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque, Speaker of the House Allan Peter Cayetano and the ever-infamous, Department of Health Secretary Francisco Duque. I surmise history will not be so kind to them, and their roles and decisions in this crisis will continue to be told on, even when “this is all over.”
Tumblr media
Infestation of Rats
These three loyal lackeys of Duterte can be likened to the rats in the children’s fairy tale of the Pied Piper who is no less than Duterte. Roque, Cayetano and Duque seem like educated and smart people, leaving no other explanation for their horrible decisions, except that they have long sold their souls to Duterte, and are in too deep to back out now. They’ve let themselves fall under some kind of spell. A consolation in the story of the Pied Piper, is that the entranced rats follow the Pied Piper’s hypnotizing music to their eventual demise and drown at sea. The Pied Piper however, just leaves them there and walks on. Seems like a foreboding scenario, figuratively speaking.
It would be best if the story ended there. However, we find that the Pied Piper, like our very own version, is a vengeful one, and will stop at nothing until he has accomplished a personal vendetta towards whomever crosses him. In our Pied Pier’s skewed view, he feels that his opponents have gravely wronged him, or have been incredibly ungrateful for all the “work” he has achieved. His next plan of action is to hit them where it hurts the most – by getting to the children or those “most vulnerable and without a voice”. Seizing the power of his position, he is able to demonize multitudes through his filthy words, terrorizing laws and drug wars. (Read: Dead Kids, February 20, 2020).
In so many dark metaphors, in the dead of the night, while everyone cluelessly sleeps, the Pied Piper plays his hypnotizing song that “vulnerable communities” are uncontrollably drawn to, forced to follow, or fooled into blindly following, until they all disappear without a trace, possibly never to be found again.
Light at the end of a Long Tunnel
However, I think our Pied Piper may have made a costly miscalculation. He may have robbed the country blind and killed countless lives (directly and indirectly), while we ignorantly slept, but he has ignited a fire. He has seemed to awoken a sleeping giant – a sleeping giant, unified in anger against this administration and what it stands for. Is Change Coming?

Advice for an aspiring author hoping to write lgbt muslim characters?
Hi, thanks for your question!  This is quite the rabbit hole, so I can't cover everything, but I did my best.  Some general guidelines and then my own view:
1. Do not write this story unless it is from personal experience or with the direct express written permission from the person it’s based on, and I hesitate with that second one.  Like many other experiences, this story hasn’t been told all that often, so unless you’re one of the above, you don’t have many points of reference and will probably get it wrong and, I suspect, as ‘exotic’.
That said:
2.  Start by examining yourself. One of my favourite resources is @writingwithcolor, which has many great references for this.  At this point, we're asking questions such as "Why do you not want to represent us?" and "Why do you need to tell this story right now?" among others.  Do check it out.
3.  Please, please don't write an apologetic acceptably assimilated model minority.  I don't know where you're from, or where you intend to set the story, but we're all influenced by American media, so I feel it's important to mention.  We generally don't have positive feelings towards those characters, let alone relating to them, at least not to the aspects where they're supposed to represent us.
(My personal pet peeve example is Abed Nadir from Community, a Muslim enamoured with Christmas and is an all-around Acceptable Arab... played by an Indian actor.  It's extra irking because the show was touted as being Better Than Big Bang Theory, and it seemed okay addressing many other nuances, but when it came to this? Think of it this way: why didn't they cast an Asian actress to play Britta or Annie and called her white? Or, indeed, an Indian actress to play Shirley and called her black? Because clearly they believe the audience can't tell the difference? Arabs are black or white but not brown, guys.  Not all Arabs are Muslims and vice versa.  Some Muslims are (gasp!) white.)
Anyway, the point is Abed, and others like him, are non-threatening.  They reject their own identity and are desperate to be Just Like Us Default White People.  While this is definitely the case for some people, 1. it's not the case for most people, 2. it's just a really tired trope especially in current times, and 3. the other side of this trope’s coin is that in order to be acceptable for The West, they have to rebel against their character’s original identity, which is just as tired.
But I digress.  You already know by asking this question that it’s controversial.  Why not play it straight instead?  Pun unintended.  Do your research, whatever way you choose to go.
4.  Speaking of doing your research, do. your. research! Muslims are a diverse group of about 2 billion people*.  There are two major sects and many smaller ones.  In the major ones, homosexuality (etc) is a sin, haram, full stop, end of sentence.  Any level of presenting like the opposite gender is not only haram, it’s cursed.  Yes, there are many people coming up with exceptions and loopholes, or just doing what they want regardless, and if you want to write about them, that's your prerogative, but:
* so Kamala Khan, for example, is completely unrelatable to me. (See: 9)
5.  You know what else is considered haram in majority Islam? Extra-marital sex.  Pork.  Alcohol.  Drugs, yes including cannabis, in fact even nutmeg.  People do all that anyway! Especially in non-Muslim-majority countries where the laws don’t make it harder for them, or in poorer Muslim-majority countries where people don’t get educated in religious matters, or indeed all over everywhere because not all people of any religion actively practice that religion.  It's a non-issue by this point.
5A. The only reason LGBT Muslims is An Issue, and it’s An Issue Now, is because America’s making it one.  It’s no different than, say, modern white feminism.  They stir the pot, we deal with the mess.
5B. Muslims are people, and people aren't perfect. We know this, and we've addressed it as nauseam… and that’s just it, we’re allowed* to talk about these things because we know ourselves and our experiences.  It’s more acceptable coming from us to us because we have a common ground to start discussing things.
* I wrote allowed, but it really depends on the situation. Sometimes you’re not allowed simply because you don’t want to make it an issue, and that’s okay too.
5C. Since you’re asking, I’m assuming you’re not a Muslim yourself, and that puts a layer on scrutiny on you.  We don’t know where to begin to talk to you, and it’s worse if you represent us in any controversial way or in any way less than perfect.  Less than perfect by whose standards? It depends. Nobody knows! (See: 3)
5D. Examine yourself, research the topic, and know just what you’re trying to say.
6.  That said, here’s my personal take on it that I’d love to see someone do, but haven’t so far.  I don’t know how people arrive at their sexuality, whether it’s by nature or nurture, but they do end up there one way or another.  When it comes to Islam, you’re highly encouraged to (heterosexually, to be clear) marry and reproduce.  You’re discouraged from sex outside that framework.  If you are unable to marry for whatever reason, you’re supposed to find a way to deal with it. Fasting is often recommended.
And the way I see it, finding yourself not being attracted to the opposite gender is just one reason to not marry.  “So I NEVER get to have sex?” Yes, just like your straight brothers and sisters who realize they can never marry for their own reasons. Maybe their health prevents them. Maybe they have family depending on them, especially financially, and they realize can’t add a husband or wife into the mix. Maybe they’re incompatible with the person they wanted.
The West worships Romantic Love (also money, but that’s another thing), but it really isn’t everything in life*.  Just see any post here on tumblr dot com discussing the different kinds of love the Romans acknowledged and wrote about extensively.  Yes, it’s a powerful drive, but again, it’s not the only thing in life, and coming to that realization is its own journey.
* (Something something Harry Potter)
I am so, so sick and tired of characters who don’t practice their religion (“hi, I’m Muslim/Jewish/Christian/Hindu/Buddhist/whatever, but I will have that pork, that beef cheeseburger, whatever”*), and equally tired of characters who are the personification of their religion (“hi, I’m religious, hear me act out my stereotypes”). Don’t get me started on characters who exist just so the authors can bash that religion.
* a recent disappointing example was the show Crazy Ex Girlfriend.  When Rebecca is first introduced, I was excited to learn the show was about a Jewish character, finally a religious character portrayed as practicing!  But it was quickly revealed they were focusing on the cultural aspects, and not only is she non-practicing, she doesn’t even believe any god exists.  Snore. In contrast, see: Shepherd Book from the show Firefly.  Not just a practicing Christian, an actually interesting character in his own right.  Not a perfect person by far, but someone who’s doing his utmost to live his life and still maintain his faith.
I want a Muslim character who finds themselves attracted to whomever, someone from the same gender or whatever you want, or feeling like they want to present as not their birth gender, and then proceeds to do what so many of us real-life Muslims do: find ways to deal with it and come to terms with it.  Acknowledge it and make peace with it.  Make the choice, the conscious decision, to remain faithful to their beliefs and maybe not pursue a romantic relationship with the other person… and instead interact with them like a human being they care about.  Help them reach a goal or achieve a dream, keep them safe from harm, something.  Maybe focus on the traits of the other gender that are accessible, or fight the toxic effects of the patriarchy, something.  Writing like “a happy ending == they end up together”, and any and all other outcomes are Bad and Tragic and Void, is boring and unrealistic.
Just as a black woman being soft and feminine is a rebellion against the mainstream, a religious character sticking to their faith above all else is way more interesting than yet another character breaking the rules.
Addendums:
7. “But Islam is homophobic?” No, Islam has rules against intentionally engaging in specific behaviors.  You’re not faulted for having low alcohol tolerance, you’re faulted for the act of consumption. You’re not faulted for being addicted to drugs, you’re faulted for making the decision to try it the first time, or if you were tricked into it, for not trying to get clean once you’re there.  However!  People, all people, hashtag not just Muslims, often try to enforce rules by creating fear and hatred around them.  It’s a convenient societal shorthand, even if the consequences can be different than intended.  It’s the same mechanism that leads to “abstinence = zero sex ed” in the US.  Abstinence isn’t the issue, people trying to enforce it by making information around sex opaque are the ones causing problems.
So some Muslim people end up homophobic, and some Muslim people go all in the other direction, because the balance is delicate and difficult to find.
8. “LGBT stories aren’t just about sex, what about asexuals, transsexuals, etc?” True, but most LGBT stories tend to go in that direction, and I’m keeping it as broad as I can here.
9. Even if your character is Muslim but not Arab, it’s probably going to come up, in your research if not in your story.  Although the most populous Muslim nation is Indonesia and the most famous “Muslim” terrorists are Afghani, the most prominent Muslim sites are in Saudi Arabia and Palestine.  The branding is there.  With that in mind, required reading is the film Reel Bad Arabs, and any primers you can find on Orientalism, Colonialism, and Imperialism.

Honourable mentions:
Check out the Saudi series Masameer by Myrkott on YouTube, many episodes have subtitles. They recently made a movie and it's on Netflix internationally!  You can't escape American Imperialism any more than you can escape British Colonialism*, but we're all way past being enamoured by them.  The Emirati series Freej is also in Youtube, sans subtitles, though the DVDs have them, and I’ll leave it at that.  Hashtag quarantine let us catch up on shows?  Stay safe, stay home.

hey, I just wanna ask, because I'm not so sure, you're not allowed to say the n-word when quoting something? are you allowed to write it down when quoting something? just asking because we do a lot of books like for example to kill a mockingbird in class (over 80% of us are brown and asian if that helps (all but 2 of us have immigrant parents)) where the n-word occurs a lot, and all of us absolutely refuse to say it when reading it out, and just replace it with 'black person' or whatever (1/2)
p2: fits, but our teacher (not white) encourages us to say it and is disappointed when we refused, saying that we are giving the word too much power. just wanted to ask, because when you write analysis and everything it feels so wrong to not write down the quote accrately, but I'm very unsure as I don't know a lot about these things. Thanks! (: xx
hi, hello, thank you for your ask! i want to start this by saying im greek and in no way am i speaking for anyone. if a person of color, especially someone who is black, reads this and wants to weigh in i would love to hear their thoughts. their opinion matters more than mine. in no way am i trying to make it seem like everything i say is completely right.
so, i did some digging and apparently this book is a controversial topic in america. some people think there is nothing wrong with it being taught and some people think there can be other alternatives that dont use the n word (at least not this much)
since you dont feel comfortable saying it but you also struggle with writing down the quote accurately, i found this answer in a forum that might help:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
im sorry i cannot take screenshots i suck with technology (yes, i suck both with twitter and with technology, im a grandma)
the last bit was the one that made the most sense to me, as someone who is not a native english speaker, i didnt understand the middle part tbh
i can not say whether you should or not use the n word in that context, because its not my place, but i hope this post helped you find a way to quote the book without using the n word and without feeling "strange" about it
(ab your teacher: you didnt specify whether they are black or not, but i feel like you would benefit from talking to them about it so you can understand each others perspectives better :) )
if you need more help, i will gladly try to help a bit more
