My three things from the SGE movie

1. The degirlbossifcation of Sophie

2. Much needed context and character arcs(Sophie and Agatha in particular) being missing. There was no Trial by Tale.

3. The ending’s hint makes no sense.

For Number 3, if you read the book you would know that Tedros essentially goes into a teenage boy rage because Agatha chose Sophie(her yet to be revealed sister) over him. The main part was that he was upset that she kissed Sophie instead of him. The movie’s ending and set up for the sequel makes no sense, considering Tedros got a kiss(on the mouth by the way) from Agatha before she and Sophie went home. Which means aside from Agatha leaving he has no reason to be mad. His last line at the end did tickle me though. Like “Agatha I need you😭😭😢”

Got any least favorite movies besides than Encanto?

Hmmm it is hard to think because I dislike or hate many movies but few are the ones that made me angry, this is more shows usually. So I don't know how I'll organize it

Oh well, just titles that just cross my mind : How To Train Your Dragons 2 and 3 (the 3rd is the WORST for total character and plotline assassination, the 2nd does resoect the franchise's spirit but oh boy I'd make a whole post about my problems with it), Ratatouille (not hate but I really do not care for cooking movies "OH NO HE RUINED THE SOUP WHAT A TRAGEDY !" I DON'T GIVE A SHIT and it randomly having cartoon physics in a "realistic" environment throws me off), The Wild (until Encanto THIS was the worst Disney movie), A Clockwork Orange (I KNOW it is a classic but I just find it boring and even if I DO know it IS on purpose to denounce society tgat the main character gets away in the end it frustrates me to have gone through all of that for naughts ; a good movie for that, it did its job good ! Just not for me lmao), Usual Suspect (it was SOOOOO boring I was nearly too asleep to get what was happening in the end, I found out like years later there was a plot twist in the end because it had sedated me THAT much I didn't pay attention at all to names and faces lmao), The Lion King live action remake (OOOH IT FELT LIKE NECROMANCY FOR HOW COPYPASTED BUT SOULLESS IT WAS IT HURT... I HATED IT SO MUCH I STRAIGHT UP STOPPED GOING TO SEE DISNEY LIVE ACTION REMAKES AFTER THAT), Star Wars 7 and 9 (ABSOLUTE FRANCHISE ASSASSINATIONS WITH A MARY SUE AND COPY PASTING FANDNSERVICE WITHOUT MAKING IT MAKE SENSE OR ORIGINAL, A FORCED SHIP, FORCED DRAMA... The 8th was flawed too BUT I liked it for DARING trying to be different !!!), Ice Age 5 (GOOD GOD IT WAS SO LAME AND UNFUNNY IT SHOULD HAVE ENDED WITH THE 4TH OR BETTER THE 3RD SINCE THE 4TH WAS OKAY AT BEST MEH AT WORST)... RIGHT now I can't think of more, I mostly have titles of movies I find meh or just too flawes but without being disliked either (like Wish. It is a BAD movie, objectively, Disbeh deserves this failure and I'm glad it flopped hard. Yet it was okay to me. And Rise of the Guardians was okay too, but no sorru folks visually sure it is gorgeous but plot and characters wise it is VERY meh and the ending/Pitch's defeat sucked ass I was frustrated and annoyed while I was like 14 and seeing how people adored it anyway made me understand/realize sometimes people will call media "good" only because it has beautiful looks) so idk more

There are also movies I didn't watch but refuse to because I know I WILL hate it or at the very least will be angry about for the posts and clips I saw and might grow to hate it out of frustration of seeing it praised. Like Nimona (a Tumblr/Twitter post that lasts for 1h30 and will be relevant only for 2 years. Also fugly artstyle and charadesigns, also I'm petty and I loathed how Tumblr used it to mock Elemental which was a masterpiece and the best Pixar in many years and the best Pixar romance so fuck this) and Wendell and Wilde (for all I read about the main character Idc she is grieving for her parents, she IS an ungrateful edgy bitch who actually HESITATED to sacrifice an innocent guy for her own gain but because she chose not to and because "she's a sad kid :(" the narrative passes her off as good and in the right. I'd have not been as patient as the nuns and her classmates, as kind as they were she kept hating and being angry over anything- sometimes a painful slap in the face and a kick in direction of a therapist's office is needed I'm sorry)

One of my favorite things about your story is Kai and the way he sees a lot of things. Like in the last chapter, because he's right about pretty much everything about Garmadon! And I don't know I just love the way you write Kai everything just feels so in character when you write him. Can't wait for the Lloyd and Kai moments! If I may ask, What are you're favorite moments from Kai in the show and why?

Kai just...unexpectedly comes easy to me? At first I thought he'd be a really hard character to write for because for a long time he was, like, my 5th favorite ninja snksnk (he's teetering around 2nd/3rd now) but his voice/dialogue/direction is just so GOOD that I can just always hear his voice in my head and I can get a pretty good picture of what he's probably thinking about things xD (...really the only thing I changed was making him more prone to crying, but I'll chalk that up to his softer movie personality seeping into show!Kai's intense emotions haha)

Anyway, fave Kai moments? Lessee:

The "I shouldn't have come on my own" from the Pilots is a perfect way to summarize his "growth" in what is otherwise a special where nothing happens lol, but also I just generally really like Pilot!Kai because he's so indifferent about a lot of things but warms up to stuff eventually and that just feels so realistic and fascinating to me so shout out to that

His rousing little speech at the finale of S1 just before they go to build the Super Sonic Raider. They're at the lowest point they've been (so far) and you wouldn't expect HIM to be the one to try and rouse everyone up again, but he is, and he does it perfectly, and I love that for him <3

The "I Should've Been the Green Ninja" moment is just *mwah* It was an escalation I hadn't been expecting WHATSOEVER, but it made sense?? And the reveal of Kai genuinely not wanting to think like that but also still feeling like that regardless is delicious and full of potential that never panned out but was still really cool and still gives me brainrot! (Totally didn't manifest that into Jesse too hahah nope)

(Actually all of S4 counts; it was one of the few times his personality was allowed to just thrive instead of just reacting to everyone else. His coping of Zane's death. The way he united everyone on their Elemental Dragons towards the end. The eternal Lloyd support. The Kailor Krumbs. The Double Crossing. All the savagery towards everyone else at any given moment. Just. Aaah. Do not get me started on S4 to ANY degree I won't stop)

Kai?? Fighting HIS DAD?? When he KNOWS it's his dad and tries to kill anyway out of all the built up aggression and resentment built up over the years and with recent revelations??? And all it takes it a word from his mom to make him come to his senses?? *lies on the floor* Don't touch me

Also shout-out to him rebuilding the Golden Weapons I think I cried

Aight in the later seasons Kai doesn't really get a specific moment to shine so to speak (except the get-your-powers-eye-glow moment which was dope) BUT whenever he DOES crop up for a scene or gets a line he SELLS IT SO HARD??? Sometime I swear Vincent realized Kai was getting the short end of the sticka nd thus tried to make Kai as memorable as possible whenever he speaks and I just think that should be recognized more <3

Aaaand that's enough, I'm not quite as passioned about him as the average Kai fangirl in the days of old but I do hold a lot of thoughts about him in my head and my heart

(Y/n) was hanging around his living room, his roommate Kite nowhere to be found. He was bored to say the least. Deciding that he could find more entertainment outside, he sat in the field near their house. He crossed his legs and sighed, absentmindedly picking the nearby flowers and weaving them into a little crown, the neighborhood cat sauntering up to him.

He smiled at the feline, scratching him behind the ears. "Hey Fluffy!" He cooed. "How are you today bud?" The cat only purred in response. Placing the crown on the cats head, he laughed. The cat didn't mind, and payed next to him.

He was staring up at the clouds, when a familiar man came up behind him. "Hey softy" said the man, causing the other to squeak in surprise and look at him. It was Kite, of course. (Y/n) huffed angrily. "I am not soft!" He said defiantly.

 Kite chuckled, and sat down next to him. Their hands were almost touching, and that fact alone made the "tough" man blush. He had loved this idiot since they had first moved in together, soon after high school. Now, 6 years later, they had moved to Japan to be near their online friends Go and Ayumu.

 Kite broke the silence they were in. "So um... Ayumu and her girlfriend-" "Wait, Ayumu has a girlfriend? Since when!" "Let me finish! Ayumu and her girlfriend, Nanami, want us to go to the movies with them tomorrow. Kinda like a double date thing, but only we're not together. Do you wanna go?"

The (h/c) boy felt his face heat up even more. "Oh I- um yeah sure I'm down," and before he could think about what he was saying, he added, "it's a date then." Kite raised an eye brow and tilted his head in confusion. "I mean yeah if you want it to be. It's a date"

Realizing what he had said, the man in question's eyes widened. His face was bright red at this point. "I'm uh- I'm gonna go inside-" he said and pointed at the house. Kite frowned, but waved slightly as he walked inside.

He headed straight into his room, and flopped onto his bed. Grabbing his pillow, he happy screamed into it, his legs kicking aggressively. He had accidentally planned a date with Kite! The excitement he felt was immeasurable. Now all he had to do was go to sleep, and he'd finally be on that date. After a few hours of just scrolling through his phone, that's exactly what he did.

It was date day, and (Y/n) couldn't be more nervous. He was wearing a black Jean jacket with ripped black jeans and a spiked collar, but still felt he didn't look good enough. He looked in the mirror, narrowing his eyes. Calm down (Y/n), you look badass. Now just to see what Kite thought.

He walked into the living room to see his date. The other man was wearing his usual black turtleneck and jeans, but he was still stunning. His eyes widened when (Y/n) walked over to him, a light blush on his cheeks. He walked over to the other boy. "You look... wow" he said breathlessly.

He put his hand up to the spiked collar, his hand brushing the throat of his date. That sent shivers down his spine, his face bright red."T-thanks... You're not too bad yourself" he managed to sputter out, causing Kite to chuckle. "Come on idiot" he said, holding out his hand.

Realizing what he did, he put it back to his side. "Sorry that was a bit forw-" "hey no i don't mind!" He was cut off, as he felt a hand grab his. "Let's just go."

The two met the other two girls there. Ayumu smiled, running up to them and giving them big hugs while giggling. "I'm so glad you too could make it!" She said happily. "Wouldn't miss it" (Y/n) replied with a small smile. "What movie are we even seeing?" Ayumu led them to go purchase their tickets. "They're replaying The Exorcist, so we're gonna watch that"

(Y/n) paled, his eyes widening. He hated horror movies, he was always so easily scared. "Neato. Cool. Great choice" he said with an awkward chuckle. "Anyways, you should meet my girlfriend. Kite, (Y/n), meet Nanami, and Nanami, meet Kite and (Y/n)!" She said cheerfully, shoving said girlfriend over to her friends.

The taller girl smiled and waved. "Pleasure to meet you too" she said politely. Kite was the one to respond, "You too. Now, for the movie. Everything is on me guys!"

They were watching the movie, a big bucket of popcorn between the couples. (Y/n) reached for some popcorn and, in cliche fanfiction fashion, Kite did the same and they ended up holding hands the whole time.

And then the jump scares came. Despite his tough facade, (Y/n) was secretly a huge coward. Especially during one specific jump scare which caused him to jump halfway out of his seat and scream rather loudly.

Kite looked at him and chuckled, an eyebrow raised. "You okay tough guy?" He asked jokingly. "I'm fine, I don't know what to talk about!" And that statement earned him an eye roll and a soft smile. Kite put his arm over the other man'a shoulders and held him. "Whatever, softy"

BURY ME DEEP / RE-INTRODUCTION

status: i mostly write for fun. So, for now it’s drabbles, playlists, graphics, headcanons, and biographies. i will eventually write it in chapter form. Yet, for now, i’m just having fun doing a lot of random character development. 

genre: speculative fiction - but sci fi noir horror

setting: the city of whispering sands, which basically has a los angeles in the 80s aesthetic going for it meets 1940s film noir. a weird combo, i know, but it’s fun. neon is very popular right about now and so are old earth movies from the late 70s, 40s, and 80s. the year is 3024 and the planet is new and part of several new planets that have been inhabited by humans and aliens alike. oh yeah and there are random doors to different dimensions that are probably caused by the aliens. because, uhm, why not? but no one talks about the aliens because they like to mess with people. also also also humans have powers because they got involved with some of the humanoid looking aliens. the last bit isn’t super important but it explains the powers, so yeah.  

pov: the story will be in 3rd person, but some drabbles might be in 2nd. 

warnings: missing people, violence, superpowers, paranormal themes, death, possible drugs, drowning, unreality, family issues, turning super powered themed media tropes on their head. 

about:

our protagonist, who is essentially an anti-hero, is claudia daviau. she comes from a city that’s essentially like brooklyn, but she was adopted by a rich family. she’s kind of been raised into controlling her powers from a young age - for appearances sake - and has no idea she has them until she’s 12, when her brother is murdered and she is nearly drowned by the person who succeeded in murdering her brother. 

she is saved by the little neighbor boy, who uses his powers to bring her back to life. however, this serves as a catalyst for her hearing voices of the dead and seeing the dead and realizing she can use her mind to move things. the voices she hears get her into trouble with her father and when she’s placed on medication, she discovers she cannot move things with her mind anymore. however, the sightings of ghosts and hearing them, only managed to increase. she sees her dead brother frequently after that and lives with the fact that she couldn’t save him. 

as an adult, she thinks that she doesn’t have to acknowledge that her family covered up her brother’s murder. but when she gets a job working for the ‘universal agency’, she discovers someone has decided to get her attention specifically by kidnapping and drowning people in their bathtubs. there’s usually a message for her, and though she attempts to ignore these messages, they sorta get inside her head. the murders get more and more brutal when she ignores them, so she pays attention.

during this time, she remeets her old friend - rachel - who is oddly really great at discovering what the murderers next move is. and since claudia doesn’t suspect her and is kinda hanging on a thread of her sanity, it never occurs to her that rachel is doing all of this. well, that is, until she learns that rachel knew her from when she was a child and experimented on in the lab she was experimented on - prior to being adopted. this kinda makes claudia spiral, up until she realizes she’s the only person who can take rachel down. however, rachel has powerful powers that she, with her own, cannot defeat since she’s always been told to keep from using hers. 

fun little side plot points:

claudia and her husband, alexander, who is the little neighbor boy who brought her back to life. he time travels and sometimes she and him have a little romance going. he supports her and loves her and is a bit of an oddball, who believes everything she tells him - no matter how bizarre or unbelievable the information is. 

claudia and rachel being anti-soulmates. generally, who doesn’t love anti-soulmates with tension?

martin saunders, who tries to keep claudia’s bullshit from getting out and him getting a bad name; even though he eventually has to fire her from the agency. like she punches a detective at one point and gets into fights at bars jskkhljhlkj. he’s just like SIGH she isn’t meant for this. but still lets her do her thang for a bit.

daviau family drama. essentially, the daviaus are a messy rich family who have a hidden past. 

important characters: 

Claudia Roscoe-Daviau: She’s that meme that’s like “No one would ever think Kylie Jenner was Bat.man, because it’s Kylie Jenner” aka was adopted by a rich family who’re well-known in the media. She wanted to help people after the death of her brother and she began seeing ghosts. They kind of help her solve their murders and help her help others. However, she discovers as a universal agent that the authorities cause more trouble than anything and just begins to do things on her own and gets into trouble.

Alexander Roscoe:  A bit of an oddball. A time agent. Claudia’s husband. More to add. 

Martin Saunders: Claudia’s boss. More to add. 

Rachel Temperance: Claudia’s arch nemesis. More to add. 

Marta Roscoe: Claudia’s missing daughter. Who eventually shows up.

🔥 cars (movie)

I'm so glad that I saved this ask for today because the Cars on the Road trailer come out and that's the best thing that has happened to me for a while.

Also, as a disclaimer, I'm gonna treat this as if you said the franchise and not just the first movie. Is that breaking the rules of this ask game? Yes. Do I really care all that much? No.

Now, to put it simply, I don't know where I would be without these movies.

These movies were such a big and important part of my childhood. Well, early childhood. My brother was obsessed with this movie and constantly watched it to the point where I claimed, to hate it. (I didn't.) My grandmother would always play the Rascal Flatts cover of Life is a Highway for me and my siblings and we would always jam to it like there was no such thing as tomorrow and no such thing as growing up. We had both the 1st and 2nd movie on DVD, and at some point we lost the 2nd disc and I was SO BEYOND UPSET. We even went to see the 3rd one in theaters!

Rediscovering these movies was such a weird thing, because not only did I have a lot of nostalgia attached to them, but I was also viewing them through a whole new lens. A lot of the jokes that I didn't get before I understood, I was able to actually examine and analyze the characters and story, and my access to the internet allowed me to explore the fandom for this movie.

My connection the characters also grew a lot. Honestly, when I decided to rewatch these movies (well, again, the first time I rewatched them I didn't get too attached) I wasn't doing too well, mentally. By looking at these characters and figuring out my new opinions towards these characters, I was honestly able to deal with my own stuff a lot better. My anxiety went to Sheriff, my ADHD went to Mater, my depressive episodes went to Doc, and when I realized that those romantic fantasies I've been having weren't exactly monoamorous, I kind of safely learned to cope with that (my dad is very adamantly against polyamory) through shipping some of these characters. (Said characters being Francesco, Lightning, and Sally, if you're wondering, lol.)

I made some new friends thanks to these movies, as well, as well as got closer to those I already had. (@blazingstar29 @the-cars-memer @angelwiththeblue-box, l love y'all.) And some of the most amazing art and writing I ever came into contact with was also found through this fandom. (@goldendiie, I can't even explain how much your stuff helped me through some things.)

At the end of the day, this franchise helped me so much in so many different ways to the point where I don't think I could the fandom leave even if I wanted to. I can't say that little me wouldn't be disappointed in current me for choosing this franchise to latch onto in such a way, although, to be fair, little me would be disappointed in a lot of things. And, hey, they're good fucking movies.

Movies I watched (and books I read) this Week #101

First watch: Věra Chytilová’s seminal New Czech Wave Comedy Daisies, done during mid-60′s short window of permissiveness. An irreverent, Richard Lester surrealist romp of two carefree young women who don’t abide by any rules, except their own whims. Senseless mayhem, nihilist slapstick and constant eating, ending with a Mad Hatter Feast of pie fights and destruction. The Soviet Czech government banned the film because it promoted ‘Food waste”. 5/10.

Fellini's Casanova, another of his 1970′s bloated, over-the-top, exaggerated Baroque classics. The story of the always horny, lecherous cocksman, whose life avocation was to fuck anything female, be it young, old, hunchbacks, ugly, fat, thin, even mechanical dolls. Traveling all over Europe with his sexually-stimulated mechanical bird and ridiculous girdle in pursuit of female benefactors, but who longed to be considered a serious intellectual, and not just a famous womanizer. The infamous Chesty Morgan was cast in the film, but her scenes were deleted from the final cut. 2nd re-watch after 40 years. (Photo Above). 3/10.

A blind viewing of an erotic Japanese New Wave film I never heard of, This Transient Life, part of the unique director Akio Jissoji’s ‘Buddhist Trilogy’. Jissoji apparently was known for his distinctive visual style which he used in horror films, children television and Sadomasochistic adult movies.

This beautiful but controversial 1970 story deals with Buddhist thought, family roles, religious art, obsession - and incest. It tells of an amoral young nihilist who fathers a child with his sister, even as he flirts with moral and philosophical values. Gorgeous black & white photography, constant camera movement - and social transgressiveness. It also touches on impotence, voyeurism, threesomes, suicide and murder. It ends with a climatic philosophical “duel” between a Buddhist monk and the ‘hero’, and a surrealistic dream scene involving a giant stone carp.

What a complex, strange experience - The surprising find of the week!

2 different foreign TV series:

🍿 The gift is a supernatural/fantasy Turkish TV series from 2019. I was under the influence when I saw the trailer for it (it felt longer), and also later when I watched the first episode. So I thought that this was one of the most visually-stunning productions I’ve seen in a long time, with superb stagecraft, surprising imagination, sophistication and modern uniqueness (quotes from my notes), original like ‘Close encounters of the third kind’. But as I watched the rest of season One, I realized that it was just an ordinary TV mystery of the Netflix kind. With lovely actress Beren Saat.

Kids, don’t do drugs. 2/10 

🍿 Marseille, a French TV series about power, corruption and revenge in a mayoral succession struggle. Starring Gérard Depardieu (”The second highest grossing actor in the history of French Cinema behind Louis de Funès”, but also alleged-rapist).

I was attracted to it because of the mysterious Egyptian ear worm cover Ya Sidi, to which I listened dozens of times in this past week. However, of the series itself, I only watched the first episode.

See how they run, another Agatha Christie adjacent murder mystery, a pleasant new comedy starring the always-lovely Saoirse Ronan (as well as Harris Dickinson who I saw just last week in ‘Triangle of sadness’). A meta-classic British whodunnit playing around the 100th performance of ‘The Mousetrap’ in 1953. 7/10

My 3rd and 4th films by Ira Sachs (both with Greg Kinnear):

🍿 I was compelled to re-visit his low-key Frankie, the story of famous actress Isabelle Huppert who invited her family to a last Portuguese vacation, before she succumbs to cancer. It was my ‘Best film of the week’ about 5 months ago, but I now read it received mixed reviews upon its 2019 premiere. I can somehow see why: It’s a slow and melancholic art film, and the dynamics between the diverse characters are not very deeply explored. Still, the Sintra locations are magnificent and the final scene at the mountain top is transcendent.

🍿 Little Men is a quiet, humane drama about friendship of two 13-year-old boys in Brooklyn. It is now my favorite of his films. The boy who played the role of Tony, 14-year-old Michael Barbieri, was tremendous.

🍿 

The new She said retells how the two female New York Times investigating reporters exposed Harvey Weinstein’s decade-long sexual abuse, thus launching the #metoo movement around the world. I wanted to like it very much, but like most ‘Based on a recent true story’ it started badly and only slightly improved. I hate the trumps, the Weinsteins and the Epsteins of the world with a passion, and I liked the fact that this was a feminist film done with mostly women at the helm, but ‘All the President’s Men’ it was not. Even though it was clearly an attempt to frame it as such.

Orson Welles X 2:

🍿 First watch: The stranger, Welles third feature film (after ‘Citizen Kane’ and ‘The Magnificent Ambersons’). He directed this Noir thriller to prove that he could make commercially viable films, and it did become his biggest box office success. It's a story about a Nazi refugee who hides in a small Connecticut town, and it was the first commercial film to use documentary footage from the Nazi concentration camps. Disappointingly mediocre. 3/10.

Sr., a loving documentary by Robert Downey Jr. about his father, underground filmmaker, Robert Downey Sr. Filmed in the last 3 years of his life, so more than a family portrait and meditation about life, death and art, it’s also a tribute to saying goodbye. 5/10.

Central Park, my first book by French best-seller author Guillaume Musso, a thriller about a French policewoman who wakes up in NYC from a coma, handcuffed to a jazz musician she never met with the whole world after them. Poorly-written and empty-calories, it’s obvious that it was written to be optioned as a movie. I picked it up at a ‘Free Library’ stall at the University Train Station in Tel-Aviv, and read it in a quick tortured go on the plane back. 1/10.

My Musical Theme

Music is something I love so much! It has many purposes, but the main one for me is that it makes me feel better! If I do not have music, it feels too quiet. For my Musical Theme assignment, I chose the subject theme of winter as my unifying idea. Winter is my favorite season of the year because of Thanksgiving and Christmas! It's a time when people reunite to spend quality time together, the cold weather is fantastic, the Snow (Like in the Christmas movies), and people get to have days where they can relax and be all cozy. Music that reminds me of winter makes me feel joy, warmth, and nostalgia. It's nostalgic because as I grew up, I realized that this season is not the same as when I was little, it's different now, but in a good way.

Love & Basketball: A Black Excellence Classic by AR

1st Quarter: “All is fair in love and basketball, right?” It’s 1981 in L.A. Monica Wright (Sanaa Lathan) and Quincy McCall (Omar Epps) are two childhood sweethearts who both want to be in the NBA. Quincy’s dad is Zeke McCall (Dennis Haysbert) who plays for the Los Angeles Clippers. He is a natural talent born pro. Monica has to work hard to prove herself with a stay at home mom/wife who wants her to be ladylike.

2nd quarter: Now it’s 1988 and their love-hate relationship lasts until high school with Monicas’ edge and Quincy’s top-dog attitude. On prom night, the soon to become couple shows their true feelings after they revealed they’ll be going to the same college, USC. They celebrated with a kiss, finally showing the passion between the two. Quincy took Monica’s virginity.

3rd quarter: Both managing themselves as athletes, students and as a couple, Quincy instantly finds success of the court. Monica struggles for playing time behind senior guard Sidra, having run-in with her head coach. Monica and Quincy’s relationship grows apart more as they deal with the reality of two different lifestyles. Monica finally earns point guard at the end of the season. When Quincy finds out his dad lied to him about cheating on his mom, he goes to Monica for comfort. But that means she would have to miss her curfew and she didn’t want to mess up her opportunity. She denied him. He cheated on her. They exchanged some words and broke up.

4th quarter: It’s now 1993. The two have strived through their careers both playing as professional basketball players. After Monica’s last championship game playing for an international Woman’s basketball team in Barcelona, she realizes that basketball doesn’t make her happy anymore. Quincy, who left USC after the breakup, has now been in the the NBA for 5 years. He is now engaged and tore his ACL at his championship game. Monica, hearing about the bad news, flies home to see him. The two are lost for words. When they see other, they are in awe of how much they missed each other. But they didn’t want to say it out loud. Monica ends up getting a little uncomfortable when she meets Quincy’s fiancé. Monica goes home and starts arguing with her mom over her resentments. Her mom felt as if she had to give up her dreams after having children and she resents Monica for not appreciating the sacrifices she made for our family. Monica felt as if her mom never made her feel loved and accepted because she kept trying to force her to give up on her goals for a stereotypical woman's role in life that she didn’t care for. 

Quincy’s wedding in two weeks and Monica’s mom sees that she’s a little upset about the good news so she tells her to go fight for her man back and continue her career. Monica challenges Quincy in a one-on-one game for his heart. He ends up winning, meaning he’ll get married to his fiancé. But instead, he chooses Monica. At the end, it is 1998 and Quincy, her husband, and their daughter, are cheering for their mom who plays for the new WNBA.

Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, produced by Spike Lee and Sam Kite, this Black excellence classic was realized on April 21, 2000. The acting quality was amazing. Today’s movies no shade would never compare. These talented actors made you live that movie with them as if you were really in their shoes. As if there was really a Monica Wright and Quincy McCall. The soundtrack was phenomenal with some of the greatest artists of all time including Rafael Saddiq, Angie Stone, Zapp and Steve Silk. Hurley also included some songs from MC Lyte, Al Green, Rufus and the famous -- rest her soul -- Aaliyah...as well as many more talented artists. The ratings of this film blew the roof. Fans loved it. Celebrities loved it. It’s a classic. If you don’t like this movie... you’re clearly a hater!

I love this movie so much because it just shows you how you can do anything you put your mind to. The character, Monica, is so passionate about everything she does so she comes off as an emotional wreck when she really just wants to be accepted for who she is. She made it to the top from scratch -- no handouts. Moral of her story: it’s okay to be yourself. Quincy’s ego in the movie is just like some of our male Black fellas in the world and not saying it’s bad to be spoon-fed but his situation in the outcome humbled him to learn that he needs to be there for her just as much as she was there for him. And the big moral of the story is about empowering Black love. The fairytale of falling in love with your childhood best friend.

My Journey to Brain-rot, or It Took Me Three Views to “Get” Reservoir Dogs.

Similar to my main blog, where I described my tale as a Supernatural fan, first casual then wanting something more, something a lot gayer, only to be delighted that the answer’s been under my nose the whole time. Very similar story.

I’m going to recap from memory my first three viewings of the 1992 classic. So:

1st viewing: I was probably 12. Pretty sure I’d rented it from Blockbuster. Yes, this was in the 2000’s, no, I don’t expect you to believe me. Not the watching violent movies at twelve part, but the whole “you know what a Blockbuster is?” Point being, I really liked Kill Bill, and figured this would be no different. Problem is, I’m terrible with names. Like, can’t name a relative of mine if we’re not that close, even if Mom’s told me five minutes ago. How do you think I fared with a movie of white guys dressed the same way with similar dialogue? Not well, and I wasn’t impressed. Promptly forgot about the movie, its plot, its characters, its twist, all of it.

In the years that followed, and having enjoyed the likes of Pulp Fiction and Inglorious Bastards, I decide, at about 17? I wanna say? to give Reservoir Dogs another shot. 

2nd viewing: It’s like my mind’s been wiped, have no recollection of this fucking film. Had zero expectations, but there was one important difference at this time, and where it crosses over with my experience with Supernatural: I’d been craving some gay shit. That good ol’ MLM. Only at this point, I had zero tools in my media literacy belt, and had to go by gut feeling. You know, when you watch or read something, and you get that funny feeling in your gut that it’s really quite queer, and you’re not instantly sure if you’re into it. That was me when I saw Tim Roth screaming his head off and the older guy holding his hand, comforting him. Literally nothing else in the movie held my interest the way these two’s bullshit did. Every moment they weren’t on screen being the definition of hurt/comfort was like losing the heart of the story.

Too long later, to March of this year, at 25 years old. I see someone who’s movie reactions I like has also reacted to this film, and I instantly think ‘oh yeah, the one where those two characters are really homoerotic’. Watch this 40 minute reaction, and am stunned at how it’s not only still really fucking gay, but queerer than I remembered. Late at night, done with the video, and I’m like “I need to rewatch this movie now.”

3rd viewing: glued to my seat, absolutely enthralled with this fucking movie. The brain-rot has properly set in. This is my life now. I wonder how more people don’t talk about this movie as the queer masterpiece that it is. I’m cursed with the sight, and cannot express what haunts me. A week later, I realize, to both my delight and horror, that Supernatural has done an episode of this in season 12. I mean, straight up, a Tarantino tribute to specifically Reservoir Dogs, that’s also known as one of the best Destiel episodes of the series, and blatantly foreshadows characters betraying their love interest in the season finale. Listen, I didn’t start writing SPN meta until season 13, I never even considered that the source material was equally as gay. Just, this revelation both fascinated and confounded me, but provided me with another comfort; I’m not alone in recognizing how ridiculously queer this movie is, and that professional writers got paid to make what amounts to crossover fanfiction.

So, to go from being unimpressed at 12 to obsessed at 25. God, I love movies.

Reservoir Dogs is truly one of those movies that is more rewarding the more you watch it. Makes me wish there were more videos of people online rewatching movies with a twist, or to be able to take a deeper dive into a story and not be lost from trying to absorb all the details and characters and plot-points for the first time.

That's it. Now I'm stuck here with maybe a dozen fanfic plots in my noggin. I shall never know peace.

COLLEGE LIFE AS A PSYCHOLOGY STUDENT

My College life started during the pandemic, so my class is online. I felt sad. I don't have any friends because I don't know anyone in our class. It was hard to adjust because I was not used to it. Back in our senior high school, I had many friends, and I could meet and talk to them personally because it was face-to-face, and I had no one to talk to get updates in school. So as days went by, I survived 2 years online, and when I heard that in our 3rd year, we would have a face to face classes, I felt relieved.

Before face-to-face started, we had an outreach program in our NSTP, and it was the first time I met my classmates. They were friendly and approachable, and that day, I enjoyed and realized that it was fun having face-to-face classes rather than online.

Then in September, we had our first day in class. I made new friends. They were transferee from Usl. They were very kind until we became super close, and I started my journey as a college student with them. 1st Sem in the third year was tough. Unlike in my 1st and 2nd years online, we had many things to do. It was easier because we could only search for the answer that would come out. We had our prelims and midterms exam. It was hard, and we were all stressed out, but we survived.

On the first day of December, I spent the night with my friends, eating and trying different foods like street foods and home-cooked ones. After that, we all went out to sing at KTV places. We plan on which event to join during our Paskuhan. A friend and I decided to join the Evo dance and Himig Paulino. Now we are brainstorming on the practice schedule and venues. We had our first practice, which lasted at about 9 pm. I had to have my cousin pick me up because no tricycles were available then. It was stressful and challenging, but I hope it will all be worth it. My dance mates and I went to eat out after practicing all night. We had days left before the competitions. We have some minor problems but will continue to work hard and persevere. We will have the last practice tonight. The competition is already tomorrow. Seeing our performance and the matches, we already know winning is hard, but at least after tomorrow, the brutal late-night practices will be over. We encountered many problems like misunderstanding among teammates, the dance instructor wasn’t supportive, and others wanting to quit hours before the competition. But to this day, we never expected to be the dance evolution champions, so after all those tiring nights and stressful practices, we finally won.

I spent the night with friends eating outside, having fun just enjoying the Christmas break, and we also drank a little to celebrate all we have accomplished these past few weeks, like research reports and competitions. My family and I left Tuguegarao to spend Christmas in Tabuk, where my mother is from. We will stay there for 3 or 4 days. We left early morning and arrived in the afternoon. I was happy coming back there and seeing my relatives again. Christmas day was enjoyable; sending it with my family and eating beside the bonfire my uncles made, and a friend from Tuguegarao visited me there. We spend the day hanging out at restaurants and finishing it with a horror movie night. We are getting ready to return to Tuguegarao, for we will spend New Year's Eve there, but before we get home, we will visit tourist spots around Tabuk. It was enjoyable finally spending time and going out with your family. This was one of the best holidays ever.

Well, I’ve always known that... I was Judas in a past life... I knew it, because due to virgin stuff... I always had to play to role of jesus... and I just walked out in these crowns of thorns like... I SUCKED. I sucked at the virginity stuff... I sucked at playing Jesus. It should be brought up in a court of law how badly I had sucked at being Jesus... but we do not follow religious teachings in trials, as does Islam... so... no one could do anything about it. I was never ANGRY... I was never screaming, as demons do... I did feel very drawn to New England... like... I recognized people from that area... I wanted to be with people... eventually, I realized that... alphabetically... Massachusetts is behind Michigan. Maybe that means something? (something other than us being friends so me just shipping myself there to hang out w/ friends rather than you). I remember the witch trials starting only because rumors had come out that I WAS BACK. I think all that stuff is in W. Virginia. IF YOU ASK ME... I also... kind of remembered being Sharon Tate... like... she had family... and all that stuff... family that’s still alive and with money... so... I was just like... man... I really don’t want to say anything about this... but it was stuff that PEOPLE DID... it’s who people were... that bothered me and would have made for an injustice to not say anything about. I am Blackbeard... I AM FINALLY AWAKE NOW... I know what I need to do!!!!!!!!!!!” Visiting brought back memories, and it helped me to figure out what the situation was... and why it would ring up that I lie anytime I’d say that I am Judas... It helped to clear up a lot of things for me.

This is in response to this post of mine you might have see. A common question I’ve gotten is more or less “how should I interact with a niqabi?” So I thought I might answer that and some other questions or things brought up. Please keep in mind I am not the Authority on Muslims, Islam and Muslims are not monoliths, this is advice based on my experience as a niqabi.

A note before we begin: I use they/them/theirs pronouns, please respect that.

Q: How different is a niqabi from any other person?

A: Not very! The only difference between me and a Muslimah who wears a loose hijab and jeans is our choice of clothing. My wearing a jilbab and niqab doesn’t mean I’m more conservative or more Muslim than other Muslims, it’s simply how I choose to dress. The biggest difference between me and someone who isn’t Muslim is that I dress differently and believe in Allah(SWT). We probably have more in common than you think. I’m a university student, I go to classes and live in a dorm like everyone else. Q: Is it okay to talk to niqabis?

A: Absolutely. We haven’t taken some vow of silence or isolation, I’m not certain where that idea comes from. We’re just Muslims who cover our face and dress modestly.

Q: Are there any rules about interacting with niqabis?

A: The only thing I can possibly think of is about shaking hands/touching. In general, veiled Muslim women aren’t supposed to touch/shake hands with men. This varies from Muslim to Muslim, but your safest bet is to avoid shaking hands or touching unless they initiate it. We’re also still in the midst of a pandemic, so I don’t think anyone is big on shaking hands right now, Muslim or not.

Instead of shaking hands, if you really want you can place your hand on your chest and just kinda nod.

Q: Wait you can’t shake hands with men?

A: I’m sure some of you might think that is a “backwards” or “archaic” or “fucked up” rule/practice. It isn’t. It’s just a cultural difference, please do not back into Islamaphobia over a minor cultural difference. I promise you I would not feel “liberated” if I shook a man’s hand. And as I mentioned, this rule is not one all Muslims follow. Fixating on this one cultural difference is why growing up I had non-Muslim teachers tell me I would never make it in the professional world and how “tragic” it is that I’m not supposed to shake a man’s hand. Which is weird, let us all agree and realize handshakes are not that important.

Q: Can you shake hands with a trans person? Or a nonbinary person?

A: First, I am trans and “nonbinary”. Second, Trans women are women and trans men are men, so yeah I can shake hands with a trans woman. Nonbinary people aren’t a monolith so it would vary from person to person. And again, nothing is stopping me from shaking anyone’s hand if I want. If a niqabi or Muslim women offers you a handshake, then it’s fine.

Q: Can you swear around a niqabi?

A: Gonna be real, I swear all the time, it doesn’t bother me. Comfort around swearing I feel isn’t just like, a religious thing, I know plenty of non-Muslims who don’t like people swearing.

I’m an adult, though, you don’t have to treat me like a child just because I wear a niqab.

Q: Do you have to wear black?

A: No. Black is a traditional color, and it also goes with everything, but niqabs and jilbabs come in plenty of colors. Niqabis can wear all sorts of colors and have all sorts of clothing style. My style is often what has been affectionately called “Mexican Warlock” (cuz, you know, my culture influences my clothing, not just Islam)

I like black, though. And I’ve also talked on this blog a lot about how whether people see me as oppressed or treat me as a person is dependent on whether I look “cute” or wear bright colors. If you want to support muslimahs, your support needs to extend to those of us who wear all black, not just those who exist in your comfort zone.

Q: Isn’t it understandable for someone to be frightened at first? Almost anyone would think you look scary!

A: Here’s the thing, though, that fear response is not universal. I have plenty of friends who aren’t Muslim and who barely know anything about Islam, but their response to a photo like this

is not fear. To plenty of people, this looks like a normal photo of just someone listening to music and walking down a hallway. I’m not going to hold it against someone if they are so conditioned and unaware of Muslims that they’re frightened the first moment they see me. But if you are frightened, you should take some time to reflect on your biases and try to unlearn the association with niqab = scary. And most importantly, if you are frightened at first glance, you should avoid publically defending being frightened or telling me about it. Because at the end of the day, a lot of that reaction is based in islamaphobia and defending being frightened is also defending Islamaphobic people who use that fear to justify treating me as subhuman or trying to eradicate Muslims. I don’t blame someone for being brought up in a deeply islamaphobic culture, but I do expect that they reflect on their biases and work on unlearning them.
