rec post for @f-eef that got too long for its own good, and is now just. a general rec post i guess

(as of writing, today is the steam summer sale! writing this before that goes live, so no guarantee everything on here is on sale, but! most of these are older games, so it’s likely. keep them in mind~)

- Iconoclasts my absolute favourite game, ever (along with OFF, but shh), if you check out one game from this list, let it be this one. it’s a genuinely almost flawless package, with gorgeous pixel art, fun gameplay, a really good story, and a cast of characters i just. adore. it’s so so so good, and three years later, i’m still not over it

- The Binding of Isaac so there’s this genre called roguelikes, wherein the whole gimmick is that, when you die, you gotta start from the Very Beginning; and the ‘point’ is getting better and better at the game, until you win! it’s super easy to just, play a few runs (they generally don’t last that long!), and then go on with your day, so it’s a really fun game to just waste time in, if you just wanna chill with some game. and, in my personal opinion, Isaac is the best roguelike game, with so much stuff to unlock, a whole slew of items to play with, and so much content it’s kind of unreal. i definitely think the DLCs are worth picking up, but it’s mostly for more content than like. actually being necessary

- Terraria it’s minecraft, but 2D. unlike MC, it’s got a bit of guidance, which i personally prefer, with bosses to fight and such. an absolutely BLAST with other people too

- A Hat in Time a 3D platformer, ala Mario, that’s just. super charming. it’s also really fun to play. i haven’t actually played the DLC’s, since i played it way back, but i’ve heard good things about Nyakuza Metro, which does look super slick, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

- Slime Rancher you are a slime rancher. you ranch slimes. it’s honestly just wholesome as hell, and just exudes happy vibes. mostly for running around and collecting slimes, ngl

- The Messenger really funky retro game, wherein you play a ninja on a mission. it’s primary draw is definitely in its gameplay, but there’s a surprising amount of story for this kind of genre? i honestly really just like this one. it’s neat

- Underhero you play as a cute minion, who kind of like. managed to kill the hero. and whoops, guess you’re doing his job now? it’s got that undertale vibe, though i’d say it’s less polished than it. HOWEVER, it’s absolutely lovely and it’s climax is REALLY good

- Hatoful Boyfriend bird dating sim. trust me. the ‘secret’ finale route is just. *chef’s kiss* fantastic

- Night in the Woods if you don’t mind having a very poignant sad time, oh my god, i could not recommend NITW more. it perfectly captures that period when you’re done with school, and suddenly your whole life is stretching before you, and you feel so so fucking lost, and overwhelmed and pained with it. it’s just. so good. a sadness worth experiencing 

- Shovel Knight another retro game! this one is, pretty much, the king of the genre, and for very good reasons. the first one (shovel of hope) doesn’t have much story, but the latter ones really add on it. they’re honestly just, really solid games! with funky knight characters!!!

- Hyper Light Drifter man, it’s just a masterpiece. everything about it is perfect. it’s been like, five years, and it’s still one of the very best indie games

- Tell Me Why it’s currently free for june! and it’s a story game! plus, if you like the genre, the devs got the ‘Life Is Strange’ serie(s) to delve into!

- Cat Quest honestly, i just really like this little game. the gameplay is SO much fun, and everything else is just. really charming :’)

- Yoku’s Island Express metroidvania, where you play as a dung-beetle post officer, and the gimmick is that it’s pinball-y! it’s really fun, and very cute and just an all around good time :)

- Owlboy you play as an owl boy! named Otus! and you can fly around, and there’s GORGEOUS pixel graphics, and a neat story, and just. the BEST cast of characters. it’s delightful

- Yuppie Psycho + Count Lucanor just gonna bundle these two together, because they’re both REALLY GOOD. YP is the newer one, and is therefore probably ‘the better one’, but i like them both a ton! they’re 2D horror, but i wouldn’t say they’re that spooky? though that might just be because they’re pixel games! you explore spooky place, and weird stuff happens around you. just a really fun time :)

- Angels of Death my FAVOURITE rpgmaker game, it’s main draw is, a 100%, the main characters and the relationship that develops between them. i just love it a whole lot, and it’s got that lil’ tinge of horror that i, personally, fucking adore. there’s actually an anime based on this, but i haven’t seen it myself!

- Celeste curve ball! it’s a 2D platformer! it’s really good, got a ton of accessibility features, and has like. the tightest gameplay- and, on top of that, surprisingly emotional story! 

- Bastion putting Bastion here, because it’s actually the only one i’ve properly played, but you could probably buy any of the Supergiant Games, and come out satisfied. Bastion is the oldest of the bunch, and is definitely a bit less polished for it, but i personally adore it; the gameplay probably hasn’t aged that well, but i think the story and presentation more than makes up for it

- The Darkside Detective funny point and click adventure, with great wit, and a pair of characters i kind of simply adore. it’s main draw is definitely its humour

- Littlewood very wholesome and chill farming game, that feels more like an RPG than something like stardew valley- i’d not recommend it over SV, but if you want more of SV, Littlewood might scratch that itch!

- Pony Island + The Hex absolutely adore both of these, though if i had to rec only one, it’d probably be Pony Island? they’ve both got that undertale-off vibe, though Pony Island definitely leans harder into it. very interesting plays, both of them

- Oxenfree another horror-ish game! primarily story-focused, but oh boy, what a story! i’m a BIG fan of this game, and the sequel was recently announced too! definitely worth a look if you like ghost shenanigans

- Creature in the Well wasn’t a 100% sure if i should rec this, but beside the finale boss, i really enjoyed my time with this! it’s this weird pinball inspired hack and slash, with some amazing vibes

- Kindergarten 1 + 2 they’re just fun little games okay. the 2nd is much more fleshed out, but the 1st one is really fun too

- the Henry Stickmin collection I JUST... LIKE THESE GAMES A LOT... i think you can find the old versions somewhere on the internet, if you wanna check them out first? idk, they’re fun!

- LIMBO + INSIDE personally, i like INSIDE more, but both of these are classics, and also they’re made by a danish team, and i like them a WHOLE LOT

- The Final Station i could not tell you why i like this game as much as i do, but oh my god. i love this game? it’s got a dying world, neat pixel graphics, big zombie apocalypse vibes, and a weird little story

- Year Walk i love Year Walk :)

- Smile For Me if you liked undertale’s lovely cast of characters, oh boy, you’d likely LOVE this game! it’s really, really, fantastic, and the epilogue (not in the actual game lol) hit me right in the feels

- Pikuniku just a fun little game! there’s not really much there, in the grand scheme of things, but it’s a wonderful little play, one of those games that just sets out to give you a good time, and absolutely success. i like it a lot :’)

- A Short Hike wonderful game, where it’s more about exploring the island than actively finishing the game. it’s real wonderful

- ULTRAKILL ANOTHER CURVEBALL! no idea if you like FPS, but oh my god. ULTRAKILL is so fucking good. just an absolute blast to play. there’s a demo to check out, and i’d definitely recommend it, because if it’s a genre you might like, you’ll love this one (OH also it’s in early access, which means it’s not finished yet! personally, i don’t mind that, especially considering this is more gameplay focused, but ya’ know!)

- My Friend Pedro it’s honestly just really fun to play, and sometimes i still think about the implied lore, and go all !!!!

- Little Misfortune another point and click! this one is pretty short, and is set within the same universe as their other game, Fran Bow, which is much bigger, but idk. i like this one. it’s dark cute

- This Strange Realm of Mine i honestly dunno how to explain this one, because it’s kind of weird and a bit odd, but i really like it, in all its weird poetic glory. it’s neat!

- Donut County you’re a terrible racoon who’s ruined the whole city with holes. it’s great and i love it

- OneShot another ‘gives me undertale vibes’, though this one was in development before UT, if i recall correctly! it’s so good, and it’s got some fantastic meta bits, and i love Niko. i love Niko so much

- Inmost gorgeous vaguely spooky game with a neat story... my favourite genre

- Sayonara Wild Hearts i’d call this more of a spectacle than anything else, but oh my god. what a spectacle it is! the OST is amazing, everything about it just hits right, and even if you suck at the gameplay (which i did), it really doesn’t matter, in my opinion? it’s just great all around!

disclaimer: in reality I don’t have any new lines writing has been a struggle and idk how to fix that so let’s pretend 💕 (and, to make up for not knowing when I’ll get back into the swing of things, here’s a messy little piece of something that’s been sitting in my docs for a while and I’m kinda proud of it? one day it will get finished i promise)💖

... and then he lifts his face, big soft eyes shining like liquid ink in the dim lights of your shared space. Your heart flips and presses on your lungs like it always does when he looks at you like this. Like all his dreams begin and end with you; like you are his oxygen and his gravity.

How does he do that?

How does he make you feel hopeful and happy and breathless all at once. When he says your name like that, so careful and delicate, like he’s dripping goodness down into you.

Like you are deserving of it.

As if the cadence of his voice is enough to erase everything that came before.

As though he sees in you something long forgotten, the you that used to be. The one that was good and whole. Not you now, with less than all the necessary parts.

Though in his eyes, for some reason, you are not separated into before and after. You are whole. You are enough. It’s in the way his hand curls over your knuckles, lifting your fingers from where they’re anchored on his shoulder, turning them over, his mouth glossing over the pulse in your wrist, stubble tickling.

It’s the playful way he grins into your skin when your goosebumps come alive under the teasing scrape of scruff and he feels your reflexes tug, competing with his strength,

because it tickles.

It’s in the amused little sound in your breath when he doesn’t allow you to pull away but instead draws you closer.

Because he wants to hear that sound again.

This time the soft bristles on his chin nip at the pillowy crease of your elbow, a place especially soft and incredibly sensitive and now the giggles are coming from the bottom of your stomach, the kind that dimples your cheeks and crimps your eyes; the kind of laughter that could blur out a lifetime of heartache and makes him want to kiss you so you don’t see the shining happiness collecting in the corners of his eyes.

It’s in the fierce warmth that washes over you when he finally lets you catch your breath, when supple lips press into the flat of your palm right over the groove where your future exists, sharper now. 

Constant.

Another fleeting moment, one more piece stitched back together and you are beginning to realize this is not a fluke. that nothing he does for you is by coincidence.

It still aches. Being so vulnerable. But it no longer hurts to breathe nearly as much.

He knows you’re going to ask, ‘what are you doing’ in that small innocent voice you only use with him at times like this when your fingers sift through his hair, absently focused where it curls in silvery wisps at his temple and on the crook of his jaw, where it’s softest. The tender words slipping out without a second thought and he knows you’re talking about the here and now- the soft bed, him; the unspoken direction of his attention on you.

But he remembers when you’d first said it. The time he’d stepped in between you and whatever terrible circumstance life had thrown in your path that day and you’d looked up at him from the dirt, your face pulled tight in disbelief when he’d plunged his blade into the man holding shackles meant for you.

What are you doing.

The voice that blows a fuse in his head and overloads him. Unhooks the strings of his heart and threads them through his ribs, adamant in their reach to guard you. As though their only purpose is to surround you. Keep you close.

And now, whenever he hears you utter the words, his arms will tighten around you, and he’ll answer the same way, ‘loving you’

Maybe you’re finally starting to believe it.

Even now, this is a lighthearted little back-and-forth between you, nothing more than a playful habit after all this time, but he knows the roots of such things run deep and that’s why it still slips out inside these bare moments.

He'll keep saying it as many times as it takes.

Do you have any fan casts or strong takes/feelings on the foxes’ appearances? Fandom tends to use the same Pinterest models, which feels wrong to me.

i do in fact! i've actually been meaning to make a post about how i choose to write all of the foxes' ethnicities anyway

but yes i absolutely agree that the typical pinterest model types u generally see on edits is not how i see any of them. nor is reece king or froy gutierrez or lucky blue smith one of my FCs for anyone

for a lot of them i don't necessarily have a single specific FC so much as i have like,, a general impression of features that i will see on various different people, who all may look wildly different from each other or who may not even look how i see the character as a whole but do have a specific feature i associate with them. mostly it boils down to the Energy i get tbh and that's just a Feeling i cant even explain

fun fact im a tiny bit face blind so that might account for some of why i'm so all-over about this

may as well go chronologically. some of them i definitely have more thoughts on than others

1. Dan

ethnicity: Afro Native (Sioux)

features: medium dark skin. buzzcut, killer fade. she often styles it in waves. she's very butch, wears a lot of basketball and cargo shorts, tank tops and flannels and jerseys, hiking boots. skinny but muscular, with a very rectangular body shape. defined jaw. probably like 5'4 or 5'5

FC/Energy: sometimes i get some dan energy out of janelle monae but more butch. lotta dan energy out of samira wiley. lashana lynch

2. Kevin

ethnicity: a lot of things tbd, but he's pretty multi-ethnic. i like the idea of kayleigh being half- or a quarter-japanese in addition to irish because it gives her more of a reason to go to japan for her undergrad. wymack is from d.c. which is a majority black city for its actual residents, but i also like the idea of him being Pasifika/Hawaiian. HOWEVER - and this is pretty important to my read of kevin's character - he's white passing, and has been mostly treated as a white guy who tans his whole life, like occasionally asked if he's italian maybe. learning that his father was a Distinctly Not White Man was a big shock to him.

kristin kreuk, lindsay price, phoebe cates, and marie digby are all half-asian actresses i base kayleigh on

i suppose i base his story partially on broadway actress carol channing, who revealed publically that she was a quarter black when she was like 80 years old. though maybe wentworth miller, a biracial actor who knows his father is black but also doesn't know him, is more accurate to kevin's story. then keanu reeves is a white passing actor with asian ancestry

also none of these people look anything like how i picture kevin lol. kevin is just like,, a guy. handsome ig. but kind of in a CW character kind of way

ethnicity: kayin/karen from myanmar

features: fat and muscular, very wide and heavy. this blog is basically all andrew body type refs. medium-olive skin, has a bit of a greyish tinge that makes him look a bit eerie or unhealthy. deep set, droopy eyes; looks so tired. flat face with a low-bridged nose. crooked teeth, especially his canines. natural hair black-ish but he bleaches it light blond. has the beginnings of martial artist punching callouses in his knuckles

FC/Energy: holy shit the characters i feel have Andrew Energy are all over the place. pedro pascal. babe ruth (yes fr). oddjob (harold sakata) from goldfinger. the jinn (mousa kraish) from american gods. gaear grimsrud (peter stormare) from fargo. takeshi kovacs (joel kinnaman) from altered carbon. and i wanna be clear, it's these characters specifically, and generally NOT the actors outside of that specific role. except pedro ❤️

4. Matt

ethnicity: cuban

appearance: matt has more of an Energy than specific features to me rn. that energy is Warm. he has that Warm bro jock dude energy. kind of a marvel hero build, hunky and muscular. very rectangular face. has this haircut:

i get to cut myself some slack and not go AS in depth about aaron because he and andrew are identical twins

ethnicity: kayin/karen from myanmar

appearance: similar build to andrew, less confident and casual posture and body language. less apathetically murderous and more emotive expressions. better teeth bc his mom took him to the dentist. yes also bleaches his hair

celebrities: probably a lot like the difference between the characters and the actors. andrew is the characters and aaron is how the actors actually look. idk ive never looked at someone and thought 'hey! looks like aaron!'

6. Seth

ethnicity: have been going with half-vietnamese. considering looking into various south asian possibilities like pakistani

appearance: string bean build. that's all i have to offer

7. Allison

ethnicity: allison's very up in the air for me. she and seth are the two foxes i feel fine with being white, but im committing to having no white foxes sooo. i would say i generally see her as either half-middle eastern or chinese

appearance: plus sized and hourglass shaped. heart shaped face. taller, like 5'8 or 5'9. she has a pretty fraught history with her appearance and her parents payed for/pressured her into getting a nose job to have a 'prettier' nose. she also bleaches her hair blonde. she gets it done at a salon tho the twinyards do it in their bathroom

FC/Energy: elle king and nadia aboulhosn are my main inspos for her, esp body type but nadia esp in Vibes

8. Nicky

ethnicity: multi-ethnic. his mother is southern mexican Indigenous, possibly oaxacan. his father is mixed white/kayin

appearance: definitely takes after his mother while his father is white passing. dark brown skin, warm undertones. slightly stocky build. tall ovular head and thin aquiline nose. he's kind of just,, the opposite of the twins ig, so like their facial features look very different, which is a big part of why people don't make the connection between him and the twins alongside the difference in their skin tones, heights, and builds. nicky's build and features are very vertically-oriented, with a tall head, narrow-set eyes, thin nose with a high bridge, etc. the twins are horizontally-orienged, with broad, flat faces, wide-set eyes, wide noses with a low bridge, etc.

FC/Energy: yalitza aparicio, not a guy but one of the few Mexican Indigenous stars in the film industry and i really like her features for nicky. she's oaxacan

9. Renee

ethnicity: Black. african american

appearance: plus sized, circular/apple body shape. round face. dark skin. microlocs to a bit past her chin, bleached white and dyed at the ends. she and allison go to the salon together. femme but plain style, a lot of blouses and long skirts, practical shoes. knuckle callouses. about 5'6

FC/Energy: dominique fishback. tracie thoms, esp in RENT. gabourey sidibe. nicole byer, but not in Energy. brandy, for some reason, probably bc i think she has very serene Energy and is a little bit otherworldly. like if brandy played arwen or galadriel from lotr it would make perfect sense to me, and that's the Renee Energy™️

10. Neil

ethnicity: mixed. Black/Jewish on both sides. his father is polish ashkenazi and afro-brazilian. his mother is Black British and algerian jewish

appearance: very... sharp. like sharp all over. does that make sense? sharp features, sharp face shape, sharp angles to his body. he's got what i vaguely think of as a 'basketball build' not meaning tall but meaning very rangy and angular and lean. all limbs. seth has a similar build. lighter brown skin. he has waardenburg syndrome which is actually where he gets he gets his eye color, and his eyes are very large and widely spaced as well. freckles freckles freckles. freckles everywhere. 4a hair but at least during canon it's not very healthy and thus the curls aren't well-defined. he grows it out long enough to tie back and starts taking better care of it in post-canon. wonky, slightly crooked teeth, with a gap between the fronts

FC/Energy: now neil i actually have a ton for. mostly models which im a lil ashamed of bc i do try to draw more from athletes. alton mason is a main body type ref. mugsy bogues is good to see what i mean about the basketball build without the height. here're the boys: cykeem white, luka sabbat, désiré mia, Leo Hoyte-Egan, dylan hasselbaink, this beautiful stock photo model i've never been able to track down

I want to start writing Mandalorian fanfiction but I am nervous about it. I see some people get barely any notes but keep posting and idk how they do it. I feel like my work won't get any recognition and then I won't want to post. How do you deal with stuff like that and still post?

Okay I fear this is going to be a much longer response than you probably wanted but here I go

One way I think about it is the likelihood of becoming Tumblr “famous” and becoming this huge blog with a huge following and tons of notes is very unlikely, just like any form of popularity is on social media. Not every fanfiction is going to be Rough Day and that’s okay. I would say most fanfic writers on here, for any fandom )not just Mando/Pedro), is full of hundreds of writers and only a handful of them will be receiving thousands upon thousands of notes on their work.

Now what that doesn’t mean is that you aren’t valid. I have read some truly incredible work on here that has barely any notes and have read some work that I didn’t think was as good (just in my own opinion) but had a lot more. It really seems to be luck of the draw for who has more notes, interaction, etc. All work is valid (unless it is content that hurts somebody). All your writing is 1000% valid no matter how many notes you have. Writing is a form of self-expression so your writing can’t be invalidate.

I think another thing I keep in mind is try to enjoy my writing as much as possible. I do that in several ways. One way is by writing the content I truly enjoy in the way I like. Like right now, my Javier Peña content seems to be doing quite a bit better than my Din Djarin stuff. But I love writing for Din so I’m not going to stop doing that even if the notes are less than I wanted. And sure, I probably could be writing Javier Peña smut on here and probably get a load more notes, but that isn’t going to fulfill me so I’m not going to do that.

And I have found for me, that as long as I am writing content I truly enjoy and that makes me happy, it doesn’t seem to impact me as much if I don’t get as many notes. Sure, sometimes it’s a big bummer to work hard on something and have fewer notes than you’d like. Like for my Connection series, the notes on each chapter seem to be going down every time I post and that is disappointing because that series is like my baby. But I also love writing it so much that I’m not going to let it stop me.

So I think those are two really important things to take away. Your writing is just as worthy as everyone else’s and write what you enjoy.

Do you have any thoughts about the Seattle Kraken?

OKAY.

I actually really do, so buckle up everyone; to all of you who follow me for Pedro or for literally anything else you might want to skip this part lol. I won’t apologize bc it’s hockey and hockey is nearly the most important thing on the planet lolol.

So I’m actually pretty pumped that they expanded the league. I mean, the more the merrier right? I personally don’t really know how much of a hockey town Seattle is (tbh the sport seems a little too... plebeian for the image they like to cultivate, no offense lol) but I know how supportive that city and the surrounding environs are of their NWSL team, and let me tell you, I’ve always been a little jealous of the crowds OL Reign can draw. So my hope is that the city gives the Kraken as much of their time and effort and support as they do their other teams (I was just informed that the football team there is also very popular. The Seabirds or something right?)

I think it’s only right and proper that this is a Western Conference expansion so we can finally even up them up. I’m of course a little pissed that this means I have to stay up till midnight on fucking WEEKDAYS for one more team to watch/listen to games, but whatever, I’ll probably get over this lol. The last expansion did so well I honestly have high hopes for them to come right out of the gate and be a competitive force in the league and I look forward to some really great games!

Now some cons? Listen, I’m a Sabres fan, so this is going to sound laughable, but like, we do ACTUALLY have some good players on my team (stop laughing, I swear to god... lol) and I am not confident in the management that we currently have when it comes to protecting them from any potential steals/trades/drafts. So filling the roster of the Kraken DOES kind of worry me. (Also, not a con I just thought of this- who owns them? I don’t think I ever ran across that information?)

I think their color scheme could be a liiiiittle more original lol. I mean, it looks really nice! But like. Do we need ONE MORE team in blue on the ice? REALLY? Guys come on, I’ve fucking lost count of how many of us blue jersey’d teams are out there lol. It’s been done Seattle, a shit ton of people have gotten there before you. Their logo and the logo animation I’ve seen is BALLER. like ok from certain static angles the “S” kind of sort of maybe definitely looks like a beer logo, but when it’s on the move? Man that’s going to look smart. I think their actual jersey design is a little boring but not criminally so. (Fucking looking at you Maple Leafs.)

Idk, I think that’s about it for my preliminary thoughts and feelings. I obviously hope and pray with all NHL fans that this stupid fucking bullshit gets fixed in time for them to actually participate in a full 21-22 season. Another ask, this time regarding dorne - I was under the impression that the people, in regards to skin tone and appearance, were based of the Spanish? If so, why does the majority of fan art seem to draw them (and lots of fan castings) with an Indian/middle eastern appearance? I noticed that they also have typically Indian clothing (sari and veil) and jewellery - is this true for their intext descriptions?

Hi. So this is a controversial subject, not least of which because GRRM has said in extra-textual comments that he imagined the Martells as “Greek, Spanish, Italian, Portugese”. I think this is a situation where “Death of the author” applies, because I think GRRM’s is obviously wrong here. 

I think there is significant evidence in the text that Dornish people, if they existed in the real world, would not be European.

Also, many people fancasted Alexander Siddig (who was born in Sudan) as their dream fancast for Doran Martell, loooooong before the show casted him. So that casting / fancast has influenced the way fandom thinks about the Martells. 

I’m aware of this comment by GRRM: 

In the case of Dorne, yes, Wales was definitely an influence, for all the reasons you cite. But there’s also some distinctly unWelsh elements down there. South of the wall of mountains you have a hot, dry country more like Spain or Palestine than the cool green valleys of Wales, with most of the settlements along the seacoast and in few great river basins. And you also have the flavor given the culture by the great Rhoynar influx led by Nymeria. I suppose the closest real life equivilent to that would be the Moorish influence in parts of Spain. So you could say Dorne is Wales mixed with Spain and Palestine with some entirely imaginary influences mixed in. Or you could just say it’s Dorne….

(When I think of sandy deserts and armies being engulfed by sand storms, I do not think of southern europe, even if that is what GRRM thinks of.)

Regarding Wales, I’ve talked before about this with my friend @girlwholovesherwords​, who is my expert on Wales, and she explained to me that Wales historically had strong female inheritance laws, similar to Dornish female inheritance laws, so I think GRRM’s comment about Wales had more to do with legal traditions than skin tone. (A lot of people like to take GRRM’s Wales comment and use it to whitewash the Dornish, but those people are obviously wrong, when the text describes the Dornish as brown-skinned.)

So anyways I think there’s a very strong case to be made that Dornish people most resemble Palestinians, or at least people from the Middle East. 

Why do some people imagine the Dornish as southeast Asian rather than Middle Eastern?

Well, for one thing, GRRM told Janina Gavankar, who has Indian ancestry, that she looks like Nymeria Sand. (GRRM fancast Apollonia Kotero, who has Mexican ancestry, as Arianne Martell, so GRRM is kind of … all over the place … with Dorne, and someone needs to tell GRRM that pocs aren’t interchangeable.)

The official art of Sunspear was based on the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin Mosque, which is in Brunei (southeast asia), while the domed architecture of Sunspear has been compared to Mughal architecture. 

The Dornish paint their silk - painted silk is a tradition that originated in east Asia. “Silk painting in India touched great heights during Mughal rule in 17th – 19th centuries.” 

When I was first reading ASOIAF, before I became involved in the online fandom, I personally associated Dorne with southeast asia / India for various reasons:

Dornish desire for independence // Indian desire for independence

When someone asks me to think of a snake, the first one that comes to my mind is Kaa from the animated Jungle Book, this is just who I am, ok, that snake scared me as a child. I know that Kaa is a python and Oberyn called himself a viper, I know these things, I’m just explaining how my mind works

I’m not saying these are the best associations, I’m not saying these are even all that accurate. I’m only saying that these were the associations I brought to the text as a reader, and these are the associations that shaped my imagination of Dorne as drawing a lot of inspiration from India. In the words of Ursula Le Guin, 

As you read a book word by word and page by page, you participate in its creation, just as a cellist playing a Bach suite participates, note by note, in the creation, the coming-to-be, the existence, of the music. 

Your reading experience depends on what you bring with you to the text and that shapes how you imagine it, how you create the world inside the book. 

So whatever associations and backgrounds and personal experiences readers are bringing to the text, the important thing to keep in mind is that the Dornish aren’t white people, especially when the text describes the Dornish as dark-skinned and “brown” skinned. 

I don’t necessarily think it’s wrong if some people want to imagine the Martells as Moroccan, and other people want to imagine them as Palestinian, and other people want to imagine them as Egyptian, and other people want to imagine them as Indian, and still other people want to imagine them as Chilean. (Pedro Pascal was a wonderful Oberyn Martell.) Different people are bringing different things to the text, and they’re “creating” the world of ASOIAF in different ways, and I don’t think that’s a bad thing. 

The other thing to keep in mind is that making quality gifs / graphics / fanart is hard and poc are unfortunately very underrepresented in Western media. Photoshoppers might imagine something really amazing, but not be able to execute it very well, because they’re limited by the movies and tv shows that are already out there. (Fanartists have more flexibility, but they still often need references.) Photoshopping difficulties aren’t an excuse for whitewashing, but it does explain why, for example, gifs/graphics/fanart of Elia often depict her in a saree when she should probably be wearing a more medieval style gown, if we’re going by how GRRM describes Dornish clothing. (The closest thing to a saree in ASOIAF is probably the Ghiscari tokar.) 

Finally, I’m white, so my thoughts here might not be the most valuable ones to have in this discussion. I’ve tried to give as many links as possible to poc discussing this topic, but you might want to ask a poc directly what their thoughts are. @lyannas is always very eloquent and insightful, so you might want to send more questions about this to her. 

EDIT #1 - Yes, I am aware that medieval Spain was not necessarily white and there was a significant Moorish influence (including people from North Africa) in medieval Spain. That’s why I linked to lyannas’ posts above discussing this issue (did y’all click on all my links??), and that’s why I specifically mentioned Moroccan and Egyptian up above. This ask was in the context of fancasting, ie what ethnicity/race of actors alive today should be fancasted as Dornish.

“My eyes still can’t believe this is happening.”The words came out of her mouth, incredulously at what she was seeing.

Her best friend with his arm around the girlthat had sworn multiple times to make her life hell, his lips constantly on hercheek and temple, their chairs so close she was almost on his lap, smile as bigas China and Russia combined; that was something she would have foresaw even inher wildest dreams.

It had been over two weeks since Simón andÁmbar had made their relationship public, and she was still shocked about it.

“I can.” Her boyfriend’s best friend chirpedfrom the other side of their table, his eyes too on the couple two tables downfrom them, “Ámbar would never pass the opportunity to be with someone aspopular as Simón and the Rollerband are. I’m sure she’s loving all theattention that her new status as his girl is bringing to her now.” Hisgirlfriend and her best girlfriend elbowed him on the ribs, eyes opened wide, “what?It’s true!” Gastón responded, rubbing the side Nina’s elbow had hit.

Luna looked back at the scene, this time with afrown on her face. Could it be possible that Gastón was onto something with hiscomment? When it came to Ámbar nothing surprised her anymore.

Matteo, sitting on her other side, shook hishead, “you really don’t know when to shut up, buddy.” He laughed, and sipped alittle of his mango juice before dropping his eyes on her girlfriend’s greenones, “Ámbar has standards, yes, she’s set them a little low this time, but I’msure she actually likes him; don’t worry, love.”  

Luna’s frown deepened a little, “how can you beso sure she’s not using him to gain more popularity? I don’t want that for him,he deserves someone who cares and loves him for him, not because his career is taking off!”

“I know her, Luna. If this was a plan of somesort for her, she wouldn’t let herself be as close to him as she is now. Notwithout some kind of feeling in between.” He reassured her, drawing circleswith his thumb on the small of her back.

“You think?” She asked, and Matteo looked atNina for support. The universe knew Gastón would only worry her more if hetried to help; his best friend was still bitter about the whole Nina/Felicity videoincident from last year to help Ámbar in any kind of shape or form.

Thankfully, Nina didn’t disappoint, “Matteoknows how Ámbar’s brain works better than us, Luna. You should trust him.”  

Luna’s frown disappeared when she heard herfriend, but her eyes stayed on the couple; only this time, she focused on theblonde girl instead of Simón. Ámbar sitting beside him, almost on him because the distance betweentheir chairs was nule, legs intertwined by their ankles, her shoulders back,and proud smirk intact even when she spoke to Delfi or Jazmín, who were seatedwith them and Pedro. She’d occasionally turn to him when he went to give her cheeka kiss, so they’d kiss for a second; before sipping her drink or flipping herbangs out of her face. She didn’t look as smitten as her friend, but she didn’tlook uncomfortable or forced, either.

Luna was torn. Biting her lip, she turned toMatteo, who could already tell his girlfriend wasn’t convinced at all.

“When we go skating, I need you to distractÁmbar for a moment, preferably long enough so I can talk to Simón.” Matteo’seyes showed uncertainty, but nodded anyway.

She needed to hear the words from his bestfriend to get the feeling of doubt out of her system.

They all had been skating for half an hour whenshe gave Matteo the okay to leave with Ámbar. She wasn’t so sure what excuseher boyfriend had told her to get her to leave, but she was sure it wasn’t agood and believable one if Ámbar’s glare was anything to go by. She’d alsoasked Gastón and Nina to distract Delfi and jazmín with an interview for theFab&Chic, because she knew that, the moment they both saw her alone withSimón, they’d run to get Ámbar.

She waited for a minute after they left toskate towards her best friend, who seemed to want to leave now that his girlwasn’t there.

“Simón, wait up!” she called out, stretchingher arm to stop him from leaving the rink. Simón’s smile greeted her when heturned her way.

“Hey, pretty one. What’s up?”  

He was practically radiating happiness. Thedimple in his chin was more prominent than ever, and his eyes sparkled withcontent and joy. He had smitten written all over his face, and it threw her offa little.

Not once had she seen him this way, not ever.She hesitated for a small moment, she didn’t want to ruin his relationship byplanting the seed of doubt, but she also didn’t want him to get heartbroken ifÁmbar was indeed using him.

“I wanted to talk to you about something,” theseriousness in her voice confused him. He took a step towards her.

“What about?” he turned serious too, once herealized something was up with her. Luna looked around to make sure no one wasthere to interrupt them, before sighing.

“It’s about Ámbar.”

Simón didn’t say anything at first. He justkept looking at her, still serious, before he blinked, “Ámbar?” Luna nodded, “whywould you want to talk about her?”

“I just,” she struggled to find the words, “areyou sure she likes you?”

Simón blinked again.

“What?” he was thrown off by her question, “you’reasking if I’m sure she likes me? I’m sorry Luna, but what the hell?”

She fidgeted a little under his stare, who hadhardened significantly after she’d thrown the question. “I’m just, I want youto be sure she’s with you for the right reasons. That’s all.”

Simón’s face softened a little, and sighed, “whoput this on your head, Luna?” She was dumbfounded by this.

“Eh?”

He smiled a little, “I know you, squirt.Someone must’ve told you something that made you worry about this. It’s not inyou to automatically think something was up. Now, spill, who was it? Matteo?Nina? Jim and Yam?”

Luna took a step back, and shook her head innegative, “Gastón may have said something about Ámbar never missing the chanceto gain popularity, and while I admit I hadn’t thought about it before, I haveto agree with him. I don’t want you to get hurt because of her, Simón.” She admitted.

“Luna, Luna, Luna, what am I gonna do with you,huh?” he chuckled, and stepped closer to held her hands, tilting his head alittle to be at an eye level with her, “you don’t have to worry about that,okay? I like Ámbar, and she likes me, too. No weird business involved, alright?Believe me.”

She searched in his eyes for any kind ofhesitation or proof he wasn’t absolutely sure about his words, but found none.So, she sighed in defeat. “Fine.”

Simón laughed at her face, before pulling herin a hug. “What do you say about skating with me for a while? I have a couplemore minutes before I have to help Pedro interview people for new staff.”

“If you insist.” She mocked him, snorting alaugh when he began moving them towards the center of the rink with a funny expression.  

Luna forgot about their discussion soon enough,but the weight of doubt wasn’t fully gone yet.

The next morning, a knock on her doordistracted her from tying her school’s tie correctly. She exclaimed a quick “comein” before messily tying it; thinking it was her mom hurrying her to godownstairs already.

Surprisingly enough, if it wasn’t her mom, butÁmbar who entered her room.

The blonde scanned quickly the room, the usual disinterestedlook present on her face. “Lunita,” she greeted her. Luna was confused to seethe older girl in her room, and it showed in her voice.

“Ámbar?”

Said girl smiled tightly, “good morning.”

“Don’t take this the wrong way but, what areyou doing here?”

Ámbar shrugged her question, “can I sit?” shepointed to chain near Luna’s desk, when she nodded, the blonde continued, “Icame to talk to you about something.”

“To me?”

“It’s about Simón.”

Luna jumped to a defensive stance, “listen, ifyou came here to give me the “stay away from my boyfriend” talk let me tell youalready that I won’t because 1) he’s my best friend and 2) I have-”

Ámbar rolled her eyes, before interrupting her,“I didn’t come here for that, you loser.” The brunette was taken aback.

“You didn’t?”

Another eye roll, “no.” The blonde straightenedher back, looked at her, and sighed before speaking again, “Simón told me youtwo had a talk yesterday. One that involvedme.”

“He told you?” At this, Luna was surprised.One, because she didn’t think Simón would actually tell her, and two, becauseshe didn’t seem as mad as she would’ve imagined to be.

“Surprised we actually talk?” Ámbar’s tone made her feel a little guilty. She didn’t soundhurt, but offended.

“A little.” She admitted, to which the othergirl huffed.

“First things first, if I’m here it’s becauseof Simón asked me to. I had absolutely nointention of explaining myself or my relationship to anyone, especially notto you.” Ámbar glared at her forsecond, “secondly, no, I’m not using him. I’m not going to lie and say I don’t like that he’s getting morerecognition, but I’m also very proud of him and the losers he’s with; hedeserves it.”

“Thirdly?”

“Thirdly,” Ámbar took a deep breath, “I likehim, a lot. He’s a sweet kid, he listens to what I have to say, and tries tounderstand where I come from. He… Simón makes me want to be better. Because Iknow he actually cares if I am.”

“I- woah.” Luna was stunned. She hadn’texpected Ámbar to come at 7 AM and pour her feelings for Simón on her, muchless to look as sincere and vulnerable as she was right now.

“Finally, I wanted to apologize for my behaviorbefore,” the blonde looked uncomfortable, a small frown appeared between hereyebrows, “I guess I was lost and didn’t know how to overcome my insecurities.”

Luna blinked a couple times, but accepted herapology, “don’t worry about it, Ámbar. It’s okay.”

“I didn’t,”said girl huffed, “but Simón made me promise I would apologize.”

The brunette’s eyes sparkled with mischief, “you’refalling for him, aren’t you?”

She could see it now. The way her blue eyeschanged from her usual disinterest to a hint of warmth, the subtle blush andthe small lifts at the corners of her mouth whenever she said Simón’s name wasenough proof for her. Ámbar was as smitten as her friend, she was just lessobvious about it.

“That’s none of your business.” She scowled ather, but her blush intensified a notch.

Having said what she came to say, Ámbar stoodup from the chair, and walked right to the door, arranging her uniform as shewent.

Luna stopped her before she could get out, “hey,Ámbar?” the blonde turned to look at her, “why? Why change now?”

Ámbar paused, thinking her answer beforetelling her, “it’s better to be the hero of your own story than to become thevillain of someone else’s. I get that now.” Another pause, “however, this doesn’tmean I’m going to be nice to you, you’re still… Lunita.”

Luna laughed, but nodded in recognition of whatshe was trying to say.

She wasn’t going to make her life hell, butthey weren’t going to become best friends forever either.

“That’s okay. And don’t worry, I won’t tellanyone this talk ever happened.” Ámbar rolled her eyes, but she could see thehidden gratitude in the barely noticeable nod she gave her.

“Now, hurry up. I don’t want to be late becauseof you.”

Luna watched Ámbar close the door, and smiledinwardly. She had nothing to worry about, Simón was happy and with someone whowas happy with him too, so she had to be happy to.

And then, she groaned out loud; because Matteohad been right once again.
