"Defying the Default"- Skin Tones and the Presence of Black Characters
Okay, this one is going to be half lesson and half a thought experiment- it may get a bit frustrating, as conversations like this often do- but remember, discomfort is not always a bad thing! So I ask that you walk with me for this one.
It’s also interesting, because I’m going to direct this towards everyone (readers included!), but specifically towards my fanfic writers of media with no visual medium, as I’ve noticed this pattern there, and it makes up a good amount of creators on this site. Okay? Okay.
Behold! Many shades of brown!
I had to wade through a lot of colorism for this, and even this link is subtly racist in its introduction- the idea that brown is ‘unexciting’ 🙄.
Anyway, you know where I’m going with this:
"Chocolate and Coffee"
Even the link above pulled this! Writers who use this... they’re not ‘wrong’ per se but… often uninspired. It feels... Lazy. When you can tell an author has put no thought into the brown of choice, it makes Black readers feel like you believe these are the only shades of brown- that that’s all we look like. Even chocolate is more diverse (white, milk, dark, marbled, cookies and cream?) Coffee can come in numerous shades as well (light, medium, dark roast? Type of bean?)
My first direction to help with this: make it a point to know what shade that character is (whether canonically, or if you're the original creator, look at a reference and write it down) and find a name! Be consistent! Find similar browns to one another. If the canon Black character's skin color is done poorly, find something similar and use that! (I'll get more into this in the next lesson!)
Our skin colors may modify as we age, it changes over the seasons/presence in the sun, and some people even have vitiligo! But we're not gonna be “dark roast coffee” one morning and “light milk chocolate” suddenly. We're not chameleons lmao.
And you know what? That shade you choose might very well be 'coffee'! But it's not going to be because you didn't look and assumed we're all some random brown! That’s the intent showing! If we can find endless ways to describe the beauty of white/pale skin, we absolutely can for brown! Be willing to unpack why you may not believe brown to be capable of beauty, and work through unlearning that- it will show in your writing! One way is by pausing with yourself, and recognizing when you had a biased thought. Even by this, you’re learning!
Here’s where I want us to get into the thought experiment:
I want you to think about the description of characters in stories (as a whole). Challenge yourself- in the fics and stories you read, how often is anyone blatantly labeled 'White'? Read a story or fic; how long can you imagine them as not-White before it's ever clarified? Because not even 'pale' automatically implies a White person!
You know how I’ve mentioned before that 'Black people are not a monolith'? I can find you at least some examples of Black people fitting some of the common descriptions of white characters.
"Brunette with brown eyes"
(Fun fact: I actually learned back in my Masters program that genetically no one has ‘black’ hair- our eyes are processing it as black, but it’s really just dark brown due to eumelanin. Regardless, if you stand us in the direct sunlight, you will see that our hair is usually just dark brown!)
"Red hair with pale skin"
“‘tanned’ skin with hazel/green eyes”
“blond hair" (period!)
Now, I’m not saying that blond haired Black people or Black folk with albinism are overly representative of my people. What I AM saying is that it needs to not be taken for granted that a reader is automatically assuming a character is White in your piece of fiction- I can assume your character looks like anything if it's not stated! Especially if the OG source is a book or a podcast! We’re just used to assigning these features- and characters- as white until ‘proven not’! The default!
I am guilty of this too! Even still, I reread many of my works and go ‘ah, I didn’t clarify.’ And I have to work on doing better at it. This is having intent for your Black characters, but really, it’s having intent for all of them!
(This doesn't mean going “the Black man said,” the way sometimes people say “the Chinese said” (which…. Tbh we should all stop doing that anyway, it's weird and racist))
My Next Challenge:
Some people may disagree, but- Ahem:
Say BLACK!
Breathe lmao! Take the time to recognize that it's OKAY to introduce a character as Black, to say Black, it's fine! Obviously be sensitive about it, don't shove it in there to “win your diversity points”, but like… People are Black. It's not a bad word. What matters is the context in which you used it!
You don't even have to say it every single time. Really just the first, introductory sentence will do. For example:
“[Character A], a bright, young, Black girl with knotless braids to her mid back, glittering hair clips matching her bright green t-shirt, and a brilliant smile that shined against her bistre skin.”
I recognize that some might argue that by saying “bistre”, you don't need to say Black. But 1) you don't have to be Black to be brown or dark skinned, and 2) There's a social stigma behind even saying Black- of discussing race in general, because it leads to discomfort. Race (as a sociological construct) exists. When we say nothing about it, allowing Whiteness to be the default, we're still emphasizing race, however silently! If you're already doing it... Why not mention it? 🤷🏾♀️🤷🏾♀️🤷🏾♀️

Maybe they're in the Black student organization in a lead position, maybe they're in a Black main cast of a play- it's okay to have those things in the story to help develop the idea that your Black character is actively Black! Just do your research to make sure you’re not leaning into stereotypes!
“There’s no races in my fantasy/future world!”
That’s fair! But I want to give you an example of how people will still project these identities onto your characters anyway:
No one has an explicitly stated 'race' in Avatar: The Last Airbender (afaik); they’re all divided by element culture. YET, many people were offended that a mixed-Korean actress was cast in her role in the live action- they ‘just didn’t see it’, because subconsciously they'd imagined her ‘face claims’ as WHITE, despite it never once being mentioned in the canon! (there’s also a firm sexualization and east Asian fetishization argument to be made about it, but that’s not within the scope of this particular conversation.)
Point is, if you are including humanoid characters in your fantasy stories, fine. You don't need to say ‘Black’ outright. But, that just means that you’re going to have to be even more detailed in your description. Because if I were watching a TV show and a Black actor shows up as an elf… I know what features I’m seeing! Entire protests have occurred over the casting of Black actors in a role ‘meant for a white person’; so... everyone sees it!
Conclusion
This is another reason why intention in character design and writing is important! Context clues and socialization help me understand who your character is. If it works like this for white characters, it can work like that for everyone else! You just have to know enough about me to write it in (and that's where the social and societal bias lie, because how much do you really know about me?)
A way to better understand this is reading books by Black authors (for fantasy, I would highly recommend Raybearer by Jordan Ifueko and Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi) as well as Black literary classics! Finding and reading Black fic authors in fandoms with Black characters! By learning how we describe ourselves and our skin colors, you’ll learn and practice how to appropriately describe us!
Now I can't make you do any of this! But I do want you all- writers especially- to start noticing our bias, how we may default to the experience of whiteness- and how that affects the way we write. When we have Black characters, and really any character of color, we need to start paying attention to how often their features, culture, and activities are emphasized, even for what we may consider to be 'background' details. That’s how we normalize creation and understanding, and become better at writing!
It’s just something to practice; remember, it’s the thought that counts, but the action that delivers!

Lilia Vanrouge’s Flower Bouquet Meaning
Twst Bdays Flower Language Masterlist
Lilia, in true Lilia fashion, surprised us all with news of his birthday card release. I wasn’t expecting his card to release for another few days at the least. But of course, he had to go against those expectations.
As Lilia is one of my faves of twst, I will be writing a lot more than I usually do and will be adding possible theories along the way and mentioning Book 7 and other cards that have been released, so heed spoilers for book 7.
At first glance, his happy smile and the pinks and greens of his bouquet stood out to me. After book 7 release, it was nice seeing seeing him happy.
As I looked further into his bouquet, I kind of wished he had more flowers but that's more of a personal preference. The flowers and foliage they have chosen for him though fits him perfectly as you will see. It’s full of meanings that really personifies what we know of him so far and some of the symbolism found in his bouquet can possibly give us a clue as to what’s to come in the future (please my heart).
Some observations from the get go, Lilia’s flowers are mostly pink and green. Usually, Lilia has a habit of being a mix of pink and blue as a homage to Sleeping Beauty and the Fairies.
In this case though, you see that Lilia’s bouquet mainly consist of pink flowers. As Lala and I discussed, it seems that to us, this bouquet shows that he is not in between anymore. As if he had finally made a decision, and if we consider what happened in book 7, maybe it is a sign that Lilia had decided to leave NRC.
Now of course, we don't know for sure what is going to happen in book 7 and this is all theorizing, but considering that Jamil is his interviewer and DUO. It makes sense if they went this route. Jamil and Lilia both have something in common and its that they want/love traveling. So it would make sense, if Lilia decides to leave NRC after talking about his traveling experiences and wanting to retire to do so.
Now another color we see is green, which can represent the green fairy, but as mentioned before usually Lilia can’t decide between pink and blue. Hence his shoes in his Union Birthday card. The one time he did choose green over pink and blue was in his SR groom card when Silver and Sebek couldn’t decide between Pink or Blue that would fit him best suit-color wise. Though technically, Lilia does have all the colors of the fairies. The pink and greens in the bouquet and his clothes are blue, representing all three.
In the SR Groom card, Lilia had a flower with his green suit which was a White Rose. In Flower language, the White Rose can mean protection, truth, purity, and honesty. Additionally, white roses can also mean remembrance and reverence. It can also convey respect, pays homage to a new start, and expresses hope for the future. With the new content drop, it is rather telling isn’t it? In Japan, white roses have additional meaning of devotion and innocence.
On another note, I am curious to see his groovy and his flying capabilities given that in book 7 he said his power was depleting and he couldn't teleport anymore. Though, birthday cards can’t be taken seriously when it comes to time continuity anyways, but seeing him flying in the groovy will bring aches of pain and tears to us, the viewers, given what we know for now. (I know I will, that’s for sure!)
Now, onto the flowers 🌺💕💚
[As usual, my disclaimer from before stands, flowers have many different meanings depending on region and color, so the meanings I have might differ from the meanings you know]
His flowers are kind of hard to tell, so I put whichever ones I thought they might be. Get your hearts ready and anything you have that you can yeet that has Lilia’s face on it because this Fae just...you’ll see.
Flower Colors:
Pink Flowers: Giving thanks, happiness, gentleness. Pink flowers are usually given on Mother’s day because of these associated meanings. As Lilia can be seen as a parental figure/father to Malleus, Silver, and even Sebek at times. It fits, wouldn’t you say?
Lavender/Purple flowers: Success, royalty, admiration, and tradition.
Green Flowers: Health, resilience, good fortune, and youth. Lilia and his always trying to be cute antics and Silver always wishing for his father to be healthy (don’t look at me, I am swimming in feels).
Bouquet:
Pink Roses: gratitude and admiration, for those that you appreciate the most. Get well, healing, I’m sorry.
Pink Carnation: Thank you, I will never forget you, heartfelt gratitude
Peonies: Good luck, prosperity, also know as the ‘king of flower in Japan’ and is known for bravery and honor. Peonies can last over a hundred years, often outliving the ones who planted them. (Which fits Lilia, doesn’t it? How many loved ones has he outlived?)
White Roses: Reverence, remembrance, homage to a new start and expresses hope for a new future, devotion and innocence. (Man, my heart.)
Amaryllis: to sparkle, pride, strength, determination. These flowers blooms every year despite looking frail and it doesn’t take much to have them grow year after year. An interesting story is about a maiden who fell in love with a cold hearted man. She pierced her heart with a gold arrow and visited his cottage. After 30 days, her droplets of blood became beautiful flowers and the man fell in love with her and she was healed. Another type of Amaryllis is the cluster ones, we know it as the spider lilies. Common ones are the red spider lilies which is basically a red flag because it it means usually death and last goodbye. In this case though, it is pink meaning love and passion.
Butterfly bush: rebirth, resurrection, and new beginning. (possible tie in with book 7? Most likely considering the theme and the fact that Lilia is slowly dying. This flower gives me hope)
Hops: These are said to have divine powers that give deeper insight of dreams while sleeping. (which is very very interesting considering the possibilities). Other meanings: injustice, pride, healing, sleep, and mirth.
Purple Bell Flowers: Elegant, wealth, gratitude, and faith.
Baby’s Breath: everlasting love, be present in this moment, breathe, love.
Lavender Sprig: Calmness, devotion, silence, purity.
Gerbera Pastini Venezia: Hope, perseverance, always moving forward, Gratitude, devotion, sublime beauty. (Thank you @irafuwas and this post for the info ☺️🥰🌺)
Random Fact: Anniversaries could also be considered, since its the 3rd bdays for all the boys, their flower will be Sunflower: strength be well, happiness, male healing, confidence, self-esteem, assertiveness. Sounds just like them, doesn’t it?

Last in first out wouldn't usually be my preference, but I have to dispose of this book tomorrow so my mom can deliver it when she visits, but here we have a present for my aunt for her to give to a former school librarian friend.
'Out of Africa,' by Karen Blixen! I've never read it, and I'll be real, by the time I did this in binderary, I was barely capable of processing words anymore. I still have no idea what's in here, I'm just lucky the formatting was cooperative and consistent. But I did want to give it a very colorful, vibrant treatment. I was out of time to shop, be ut fortunately, I found (double-sided) endpapers I loved, then a fabric to match, and everything shook out from there.
And then.... as you can probably guess from the backgrounds up above, there's also a peller(ish) box. Last time I visited my grandma, I brought some books and boxes to show her what I'm doing with my life instead of producing great-grandchildren. She asked that I leave them behind to show off to visitors, and we compromised and I left some behind, which just so happened to include none of the sexy fanfic that I or my friends have written, lmao
When my aunt showed up to tap in on the elder care rotation, grandma showed her, and she reached out to me to ask if I take commissions. I don't, I give gifts, and I am very bad at planning ahead and didn't realize how bad I was about to burn myself out for no good reason at all, so I said sure. And she wanted an enclosure and most of what I left there was peller boxes, and I was too anxious to ask if she wanted an EASY box or a FANCY box. And then I was blindsided by my mom mentioning she was about to head north!
So I have to drop this off tomorrow, which meant I had to finish it IMMEDIATELY, which meant one non-book binderary project slipped in under the radar XD In a day, I will only have 59 binderary books in custody, which is sad, but it was good incentive to stage photos, and it means I'll have space back soon. We'll see how I space the other photos out, I probably don't want to spoil all the presents for the people I know online, but that means making decisions and I am very tired. But this is an easy one! Huzzah, etc., I should be posting more books soon!

[ A VIDEO IS UPLOADED DATED 1/10/24 AT 10:00 AM
* Video opens on the inside of a Pokemon lab. This one looks very different from the much more sterile, harshly lit labs of Devon Corp in videos prior. There's something cozy about this lab. The building looks older, weather worn with some signs of water damage darkening parts of the walls, and the air flickers with ambient corruption. Somehow the lab still stood through flood and fire.
* There is a pokemon pen in the background, and the entirety of it is in greyscale. It has a high ceiling with a dome at the top, similar to what you'd see in a Beautifly sanctuary, but the dome itself is clearly massive. Simon is standing in front of the pen looking a good deal less exhausted than he had in previous logs. The rippling corruption throughout his right arm is essentially gone.
Simon- I got the ok to record a few Video logs for the lab, and I figured since I'm working in Glitch City now, I'd give a little perspective into what it's like taking care of the Glitch starter pokemon here.
* He motions towards the Pokémon pen. It's clear to see there is something massive flying around in there. When it gets closer some of the color in the shot goes temporarily greyscale.
Simon- So Glitch City has three starter pokemon, just like most regions do. Those three are ▶️A, Elipsis or ....., and E3. Unlike most starter trios, however, this starter trio consists of three pokemon with the same typing, bird type, which means none of these three have any weaknesses, resistance or immunities. What sets them apart instead is their battle styles and physical capabilities. This first pokemon I'm going to show you, Elipsis, is the most defensive of the three and is often considered the most steadfast.
* Simon leads into the Pokemon pen. The ceiling is high, and the habitat is filled with perches, plants and places to hide and land. It looks even more like a Beautifly Dome from inside. A couple of huge, moth like pokemon can be seen flying about the enclosure. Their wings are made up of floating segments that do not entirely seem to connect to their massive, dark bodies. And yet they easily seem to take flight. One is resting clinging to the ceiling of the dome with its wings folded.
Simon- Elipsis are flight capable from birth, and are known for being very steady fliers that can stay airborne for long stretches without getting tired. They are also extremely hardy pokemon that absorb hits well. This makes them a challenge to fight for pokemon like ▶️A with its weak attack stat. It's main weakness is its incredibly slow speed, but that doesn't hold it back much when it's foes are struggling to deal any damage.
* One of the ..... lands next to Simon. It's towering height can be seen easily when it's up close to him. Even so, it moves very slowly and seems very gentle in the slow movements it makes.
Simon- Elipsis are the only glitch starter pokemon known to evolve, one of the pokemon it evolves into being Missingno and the other being Spearow. Ironically this results in its fully evolved form being much smaller than its preevolution, and additionally possessing a lower base stat total. As such not every trainer who chooses Elipsis as a starter will choose to evolve it.
* The ..... that had landed near him turns and then takes flight once again. The wind from its wings doesn't seem to be very forceful, even though it is lifting a pokemon that must weigh hundreds of pounds.
Simon- Elipsis are also known for learning several bird type moves that while inaccurate can leave a devastating impact. It's most famous move, System Shock or TM 24 as it displays on most devices, produces a dazzling array of sparks, that while difficult to control, can be a devastating hit to anything it strikes. Just don't expect it to hit incredibly often.
* As he exits the pen the color returns to the video feed. Simon draws away, being careful to shut the door to the enclosure completely when he leaves.
Simon- Since I've got an Elipsis of my own now, Flit, I've been taking careful steps to think about what evolution path is best for him. For now, I'm thinking of keeping him an Elipsis, but plenty of trainers go both the Missingno or Fearow route depending on their training style. So if you see a trainer from Glitch City with a Fearow, you might just be looking at their starter pokemon, and you might be in for a surprise when it unleashes a devastating System Shock on you.
* He smiles and gives a short wave to the camera.

Sasusaku Blank Period Headcanons #2
As an introvert, Sasuke prefers to keep his thoughts to himself most of the time. that's why he got a travel journaling book. He likes to document his journey while travelling. Although, a large part of it filled with his feelings and and thoughts about Sakura.
It's not like the complete and complicated journaling book that the healthcare industry is currently developing to improve one's mental health. Sakura told him a bit about those tools, she's a therapy clinic founder after all. However, Sasuke just can't imagine if he has to use all the mental health tools all the time, especially not when he's working. Because he's just used to all of his occupational struggles and pressures.
There's a section in the journal that looks more like a collection of love letters. Sasuke usually just pour his beating heart out without thinking much about grammatical errors. It's filled with thoughts about the people he loved, unfiltered without the worry of getting embarrassed. Unless of course someone caught him writing those, or simply read the content.
There's one night when Sasuke and Sakura had to stop inside of a cave because the weather in the Land of Water mostly consist of rain. They spent a peaceful night there, with Sakura fell asleep fast. Sasuke sat beside her, and after his lone hand brushed over her hair to gesture her good night affectionately, he reached for his travel book.
He flicked open a page where a small pink tab sticked on it. There's a large title called "For Sakura - 1" on the very first page of the section. Sasuke flipped again, to one, two, three, five pages later. He was then marking down the sixth page, a blank page yet to be filled. He wrote down the same title that he wrote 5 times from the previous 5 filled pages. Sasuke then also wrote current date on the top right of the page.

Today we have reached the Land of Water. It feels like spring here. The weather somehow always has the hint of humidity and gentle breeze. It's always remind me of you, Sakura. You're such a gentle person. A kind and gentle woman that I took for granted. I can't imagine how much of a fool I was to reject your love. If I could meet the younger version of me, I would scold him and forced him to beg for your forgiveness.
The world is more colorful with you in it, Sakura. It's the same thing with how I will never realized how blue the sky is without looking at usuratonkachi Naruto's eyes. When I look at you, I see a peaceful morning with a little bit of fogs around, I hear the sound of birds chirping, and I could smell the peaceful smell of morning dew. I hope you can imagine what I imagined.
I am stunned of how your eyes reminds me of the majestic crystal cave I once visited near Iwagakure. I should take you there when we reach the Land of Earth. I am also always wondering of how your hair could be a simple reminder that eventually the winter will pass; and the spring will follow suit. The flowers in the Land of Flowers are nothing compared to your beautiful locks. Fuck it sounds so cheesy now.
I want to hold your hand forever. I have planned a wedding proposal for you when we're inside the crystal cave. that would be so memorable for you, would it?
The sea, the mountains, the sky. You're the one who pointed of how beautiful they're, Sakura. I never noticed such things. For me they're just... environmental stuff. But from your perspective, everything seems so beautiful. I guess beautiful eyes can see beautiful things. That's what my Sharingan isn't capable of.
Should I ask your hands right here, right now, Sakura? I could give you the Uchiha crest patch that my mother used to sew on the back of my father's clothes. It's my family heirloom, Sakura. Should I sew it on your spare clothes and surprise you?
Tell me how to propose you, Sakura. If I should kneel down and kiss the ground you walked on to prove my devotion, I would. Tell me, what I can do to show and prove myself to you? Kiss you? Make love to you? Hug you until my hand carved permanently on your back?
Whatever it is, whatever you want, I am here, Sakura. Besides you. I love you.
Sasuke.
Sasuke closed his book and tugged it below his bag. He snuggled closer to Sakura and slowly closed his eyes.
Little did Sasuke know, a pair of green eyes opened a few hours after he drifted to the dream world. Sakura opened her eyes, and were surprised because Sasuke's bag nudged a little bit closer to the makeshift campfire. Worried it would burn the bag down, her much slender hands reached for the bag. She didn't know there was a book beneath it so the book fell down near her knees. Out of curiosity, she read the content when her eyes catched her name on one of its pages.
Sakura then tried to muffled her tears after reading it, trying to not wake the light sleeper Sasuke.

Okay, I'm back! I changed my character's name and wrote up this whole-ass wiki page for hyper-clarity, now let's get on with that matchmaking! (whenever that is convenient for you, of course)
Atlas Brooke is a 23-year-old woman from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She works in an office for her day job while also working as an actor with the Delancey Show Troupe. She is 5’6 (170 cm), is stocky and slender, and has short red hair and sea-green eyes. She’s a biromantic graysexual and her star sign is Aquarius.
Atlas's family consists of a mother and a younger brother named Sebastian. Sebastian is absolutely perfect and excelled at school, and sports, and is currently going to college to become a politician (he wants to be the mayor one day). Atlas was always more of a creative type, very distracted during school, and tried hard to impress her mother in every possible way. Unfortunately, Mom showed no interest in her unless she was getting in trouble or doing something wrong.
During school, Atlas found her passion with the drama club. She snuck into a show one night in middle school and fell in love with the way the actors performed which made her feel more emotion than she ever felt in her house with her family. Once she got in and started to learn, she finally felt like she was able to do something that her brother couldn't, something that was all her own. Her mother never came to any of her shows, which disappointed her, but she was beginning to realize that her need for approval was holding her back.
Fed up with her mother's emotional neglect and her ever-present brother's golden child syndrome, Atlas decided it was time to look for some work and a new place to live. First, she got a job at an office, then she sought out some acting work. She eventually encountered the Delancey Show Troupe doing a street act to advertise their upcoming show. The actors were very talented, and their actual show was top-notch when Atlas went to see it, so the only logical thing to do was to arrange an audition, which she passed with flying colors.
When she finds herself in Saligia, it is by complete accident. Atlas is a mundane, the only magic she’s capable of doing is stage magician tricks, and she’s not supposed to be here. In all likelihood, she was with the person who was intended to be summoned to the magical realm and ended up getting dragged along for the ride. Once all the prologue confusion is settled and the actual Vane reincarnate is placed in the academy’s care, Atlas has to be like, “What about me? What am I supposed to do?” So if you’re the Headmaster, what do you do with this random chick who is of no use to Iritium or anyone else in the magical realm? Make her a valet! She’s not thrilled with the idea of being a glorified butler at first, but she warms up to her new boss and the other valets pretty quickly.
Atlas’s personality tends to put people off at first. She has a propensity to get sassy and profane when she feels disrespected, and will often retort to jerks with sarcasm or open disinterest. She’s also extremely straightforward to the point of bluntness. If she likes you, you will know. If she hates you, you will know. If she’s lying to you, you will NOT know, because she’s so plainspoken that you’re probably just going to take whatever she says as a fact (a miscalculation that serves her EXTREMELY well when doing magic tricks). But despite her brazenness and attitude problems, she is a loyal friend who will never turn her back on you when you need her. She’s drawn to people she can tell are having a rough time and is more than happy to offer a shoulder to cry on. She’s also very protective. If she sees her friend getting picked on, she takes up the job as an arbitrator/bodyguard/human shield, even if she gets hurt in the process.
She’s a proud tomboy who refuses to wear a skirt outside of costumes, and she doesn’t care who has a problem with it. She likes wearing clothes that are easy to move around in, are brightly colored, and if possible, have lots and lots of sparkles.
Atlas is a very skilled actor, singer, and dancer. Musicals are her favorite shows to do because she loves learning songs and choreography. She can do modern, tap, jazz, swing, tango, and some ballet and gymnastics. Her vocal range is G3-E3 (mezzo), and her voice is LOUD (If Lynt wants to sleep through her performance, he’s gonna have a real challenge). She is often cast for both male and female roles due to her androgynous features and ability to get completely into whatever role she’s playing, whether it be a comedic role like Leaf Coneybear in Spelling Bee or a slayful baddie like Charon in Percy Jackson.
In addition to theatre, she’s also very skilled in magic tricks. Not genuine Saligian magic, but things like pulling stuff from behind people’s ears and making things end up in different places than where they were put. Sleight-of-hand tricks are a particular favorite of hers. She's also very adept in self-defense. Some of her favorite events in Saligia would be Nightmare Battles and Hallowed Eve, in which she can go all out in fighting things off to reach the goal point, much to the awe (or horror) of the other competitors. She often employs her amazing dexterity to get the upper hand on the competition, and generally cause frustration and chaos for her own amusement.

The way I see this relationship unfolding is through your friendship with Grayson (in my headcanon, you and he become friends by some utter fuckery. Neither of you know how it happened, though). Technically, he met you first, and he went out of his way to help you gain your footing in this new world, despite your lack of magic. You eventually became friends with Grayson, the only other mundane here. At first he was curious about you, but as he got to know you he couldn't help but feel that draw to you become more potent.
You can hardly blame him. While the two of you may share different backgrounds, you both possess a playful demeanor and an appreciation for the arts. Additionally, you both value integrity and honesty in relationships, and your straightforwardness is refreshing.
Roy likes confident individuals, and he would love to take you to performances whenever he has the time. As a prince, he has to has some appreciation for the arts, and seeing that you and he both hail from different worlds, he would enjoy learning about the media from your world. And I feel like you'd enjoy the art from Saligia.
Your strong sense of empathy also adds a deep layer of compassion and understanding to your friendships and relationships, and low-key Roy is kind of lonely from acting like the perfect prince all the time. Don't get him wrong, he loves his friends and family, but I feel like he'd like to let his hair down from time to time. And he would feel so safe being himself with you.
You would have the potential to create a vibrant and engaging romance, and I am certain that you could have many meaningful conversations.

Past Shapes Present (Week 6)
Welcome to another week of nature interpretation my friends! I hope you’ve taken time to enjoy nature recently! This week I thought we’d dissect a thought provoking quote by Edward Hyams:
“There is no peculiar merit in ancient things, but there is merit in integrity, and integrity entails the keeping together of the parts of any whole, and if these parts are scattered throughout time, then the maintenance of integrity entails a knowledge, a memory, of ancient things. …. To think, feel or act as though the past is done with, is equivalent to believing that a railway station through which our train has just passed, only existed for as long as our train was in it.” (Edward Hyams, Chapter 7, The Gifts of Interpretation)
While this quote is rather complex (I know I had to read it a few times), I’m going to break it down and provide some examples.
First of all, I totally agree with the sentiment of the statement, which I interpret to mean that our current conditions are predicated on all the past that came before it, and that to truly describe something as it is now, you need to know about its past.
This principle is relevant to me as an interpreter. To convey a fully meaningful story to visitors I will necessarily reference the past. For example, if I was leading a fall hike through a forest, any complete story about the beautiful fall colors would refer to dynamic seasonal changes: the trees are not red, orange, and yellow year-round. Our present moment is shaped by everything that came before, and this is absolutely true of our ever dynamic natural world.
It is also consistent with some of the primary goals of interpretation as stated by the self-taught nature interpretation Enos Mills. The goal that comes to mind is “to give biographies rather than classifications” (Beck et al, Chapter 5, Guiding Principles). By delving into the unique stories in nature, we maintain the integrity of the natural world, by recognizing that its past intricacies contribute to its present.
It also reminds me of British Columbia, standing in front of a Douglas Fir tree. Part of their beauty and intrigue is not only their massive size, but also in their ancient age. They remind us of the past, and make us ponder which world events took place while the tree was alive. This tree - this singular thing - is part of the world as we know it now with our modern technology and conveniences, but was also part of the world when it was radically different. All of these things, the past and the present are wrapped up and represented in this one ancient tree. I am certain a good interpreter could craft an excellent story tying these trees to ancient history. They could connect Canadian history with the present, breathing life and meaning into past events through these ancient trees (Beck et al, Chapter 15, Interpreting History).
What a great quote to look at! That’s all for this week folks. I’ve been slowly developing my writing, and I hope it shows (Beck et al, Chapter 14, Interpretation and the Written World).

Ah. I think we may have a case of misunderstanding here. I am of the school of thought "Okay there's something going on with the Red Eyes" such that it is not by itself a semblance indicator. I blame Raven/Ozpin magic. It just pops up too often when Yang is angry but without any damage (ala Burning the Candle) and too separate in timing. See the final Adam fight where it's Red Eyes -> Gold Flash -> Semblance Active with Fire Hair reveal.
oh yeah i’m loosely familiar with the “yang’s eyes are a magic thing” body of theories, but i don’t really find any of the posts i’ve read convincing; a few reasons, in brief:
1 - every argument i’ve seen hinges on yang being the only character whose eyes change color + her eyes becoming red, like raven’s. the reasoning here goes that eyes changing color can’t be a semblance thing, because it only happens to yang, and red eyes must mean it’s connected to raven, and because raven has magic the missing link here must be that yang inherited some magic. the… obvious problem with that is that the only consistent, one hundred percent universal rule of semblances is that they are a unique expression of an individual’s nature. we buy that ruby’s semblance can disassemble ruby down to her molecular constituents (or give her wave-particle duality at a macroscopic scale if you like my quantum bullshit probability warper theory) but not that yang’s can make her eyes switch color? blake’s can make perfect illusory copies of her but yang’s semblance turning her eyes into a mood ring is the bridge too far? (we might as well argue that yang is secretly a chameleon faunus like ilia, because ilia’s eyes, skin, and hair all change color in response to her moods just like yang’s eyes do.)
2 - in more general terms, i think rwby uses magic in a very specific way that precludes the possibility of any character having any “by accident,” so to speak. this is really the central reason that ALL “is x semblance actually magic?” theorycrafting falls down for me—by treating magic purely as power (or worse, as power that makes the people who have it *special* in some undefined metaphysical way), the thematic role magic plays within the narrative itself is lost at best, ruined in most cases, and at worst ruined in a way that positions the gods as essentially *right* in their perception that beings with magical power are superior to those without.
3 - further, we’ve seen—courtesy of the lost fable—that one magically-activated parent is insufficient to produce offspring capable of magic; one out of four of the children ozma had with salem inherited the magical gift, and the other three may have, but the children ozma had in a subsequent life didn’t have magic but DID have silver eyes. this is suggestive of an indirect link between magical ancestry and silver eyes—although it might instead be related to ozma’s recurring oscillations through the white void—and also a strong point in favor of concluding that BOTH parents must have magic in order for their children to inherit the ability. (this tracks with the god-given nature of magical power and the divine disdain towards modern, unmagical humans expressed by the god of light.)
4 - the question of magic heritability also relies on salem and ozma as its data points—both of whom have the god-given blessing that allows them to use magic innately. that is *not* the case for any other magically-activated character in the show: the maidens and the branwen twins all have magical abilities derived from pieces of ozma’s magic that he gave to them, and in the case of the maidens at least it has been emphatically and repeatedly demonstrated that this magic does NOT “belong” to the maidens in the metaphysical sense that ozma’s magic belongs to him; ozma’s magic stays with him when he dies and follows him from one vessel to the next, whereas the maidens’ magic is attached to their auras and separates from them to find another host when they die. it’s likely that the branwen twins’ magic will behave in a similar way when they die, because it isn’t theirs. right? so regardless of whether magical heritability operates on metaphysical or genetic rules, it seems to me very unlikely that a maiden or one of the branwen twins could pass magical abilities onto a child, anymore than a parent could pass on a tattoo.
anyway—all mechanical quibbling aside—
as i see it, yang’s semblance is hard-wired to hyperarousal; i think it becomes active whenever she has an acute stress response, i.e. yang’s semblance is just Magical Fight-Or-Flight. and when i say “active” here what i mean is the part that makes her into a damage battery turns on. (we’ve seen with other damage-absorption semblances that they do require activation—the absorption isn’t an “always on” thing. nora can be hurt by electricity if she’s caught unawares, adam needs time to prepare himself before absorbing huge blasts of energy with his sword.) so basically, something happens, yang gets upset or scared or angry, her nervous system activates in response to “danger” (regardless of whether there is actual danger or not), and for yang one part of that activation is her aura preparing to absorb any incoming force.
after this point, there’s a second stage of activation which occurs at the conscious level, when yang acts—and this is where the variations in how and when and what order the visual signals occur comes into play, and also why i really strongly disagree with characterizing this secondary activation as equivalent to drawing a weapon.
like—yes, sometimes yang’s eyes flash red when she gets upset or angry during an argument. the acute stress response *happens* during arguments and other situations that cause strong emotional reactions—our brains just aren’t wired to differentiate between dangerous situations and situations that just make us upset, the physiological bugout kit gets brought out either way, and that’s why we sometimes snap or lash out in the heat of the moment or need to leave the room to calm down. in non-combat situations where yang’s eyes change, *that* is what’s happening: yang feels emotional pressure, she has this acute stress response, some trigger happens, she reacts without thinking—snaps something in a moment of anger like anyone would, totally normal. it just happens to be a quirk of her semblance that makes her eyes flash red when it happens.
importantly, it seems to me that this is how yang’s friends and family understand these moments. “yang’s eyes turn red in an argument” = “oh, yang is really upset.” we see this in 5.8, when weiss, ruby, and yang have that little spat about blake leaving; they’re not *scared* when yang’s eyes change, they don’t react like she suddenly flew off the handle and pointed her weapon at them—they’re startled, but the whole back-and-forth is about them realizing that yang is A LOT more upset about blake than they realized, and when she snaps at them and her eyes turn red they’re really concerned for her. yang, too, reacts very much like someone who just, in the heat of the moment, raised her voice in an argument without intending to—and then upon registering that she just shouted, she immediately backs down and walks away to cool down by herself. (and she did, in fact, shout; the red eyes are just a visual symbol that underscores the snapping, and the scene would have likely played out exactly the same even if her eyes hadn’t changed.)
on the other hand—in actual combat situations where yang is consciously using her semblance to her advantage—we see various sequences of red eyes + fiery hair to signal that. i think the different sequencing and varying drama of these kinds of activations are—well honestly mostly down to the pacing of the fight, but symbolically the less dramatic an activation is, the less intense yang’s perception of danger. just like there’s a difference between, you know, the “oh shit running late for work i’m gonna sprint from the bus stop” kind of adrenaline rush versus the “holy fuck my car rolled into the ditch and there’s shattered glass everywhere and i don’t actually remember making the decision to climb out the window at the speed of light and move a safe distance away from the wreck but i’m here now and seem to be in one piece WHEW” kind of adrenaline rush, you know? sometimes her semblance is this do-or-die thing where she’s throwing everything she has into one last stand against an opponent she can’t otherwise outmatch, and sometimes the fight is already basically over and she’s popping her semblance to give herself a nice clean and quick finish.
i’d highlight, also, the use of her semblance during the fight in the void—when she sees neo going for ruby and her semblance fully activates before she starts to move. because that emotion isn’t anger; it’s PANIC. pure, immediate terror because somebody’s going to stab her sister and she needs to get over there right now. there’s no real benefit to activating her semblance fully in that moment—she’s not soaked up enough damage at this point for it to be worth it—but because her semblance is so closely intertwined with her acute stress response and because one hundred percent of yang’s mind in that moment is focused on Get To Ruby Right The Fuck NOW, we see that full activation happen as she begins to move.
all of which ultimately makes for, i think, an excellent metaphor for how hyperarousal is an automatic, uncontrollable physiological reaction but people can choose what we *do* with it. like *waves hands* if i’m having a bad day and i just barely miss the bus am i going to feel that rush of adrenaline because my brain can’t tell the difference between this scenario and, like, a moose charging at me? yeah. is that going to make me feel snappish and irritable? yeah. am i going to bite someone’s head off for bumping into me in that moment? probably not—i might startle and snap “hey!!” because i’m already in a state of hyperarousal and something just collided with me, but then i’ll catch myself and in all likelihood just do the normal “hey sorry”/“nah you’re good just startled me” thing, because i’m a grown up capable of acting rationally even when my brain thinks a moose is trying to charge me or whatever. it’s the same deal with yang’s semblance; it’s hard-wired to that acute stress response and while she might snap or startle now and then in normal situations, with her eyes flashing red, she’s a rational and remarkably mature person who is perfectly capable of recognizing when that isn’t an appropriate response, and recognizing when she needs to just remove herself from the situation. we’ve seen her do exactly that, in fact. her ability and willingness to do that are some of the key things that set her apart from adam, who thinks and acts like even the smallest shred of unpleasant emotion that he feels is an excuse to do whatever the fuck he wants.
all of this is also why imo yang’s semblance can work brilliantly as both a metaphor for hyper vigilant crisis-mode *and* emotional resilience and crisis management, because Fundamentally yang’s semblance is a normal fight-or-flight stress response souped up with Magic Fantasy Bullshit, and the key to resilience and healing from hypervigilance is literally just figuring out new and better strategies for dealing with crises. yang experimenting with new ways of using her semblance is in a literal way just yang figuring out new strategies for how to handle her reaction to acute stress, literalized through the magic system in the same way that ren’s shift from emotional masking to emotion-sensing is a literalization of his developing emotional intelligence and comfort with his own feelings. yeah?
SIDEBAR. i think the reason yang’s eyes turn raven-red specifically is a way of symbolizing the emotional similarities between them; raven, also, is a character very much defined by her fight-or-flight response, hers is just very much tilted toward flight. yang, unlike raven, has achieved a kind of harmony with her acute stress response—she might slip up a bit and snap when she feels especially harried, but she’ll catch herself a second later and do what she needs to to calm herself down, and once she’s done so she’s willing and able to talk about the issue that upset her in the first place. her eyes might flicker to red for a moment, but they’ll never stay that way for long. and 9 times out of 10, if her eyes go red, it’s because she’s using her semblance in combat—consciously bringing out this part of herself in a context where it’s appropriate and constructive to do so, and then letting it go once she no longer needs it. raven, though? raven just runs and runs and runs, twisting from one rationalization to the next, totally ruled by her own fear, and her eyes are red all the time. (because that’s their natural color yes but we’re talking *symbolism* here, so what matters is the contrast with how red eyes are used to represent yang’s emotionality.) and this is, of course, the essence of yang’s confrontation with raven at the end of v5; she recognizes that she has this emotional maturity and control that her mom does not, and she’s able to articulate that with so much clarity and conviction that raven runs out of excuses, runs out of justifications, and has to concede that she’s right.

Thor 4: The Good, The Bad, And The Theory
So, Thor: Love And Thunder. The fourth installment in Thor’s story. Easily one of my least anticipated Marvel projects, alongside Ms. Marvel. Let’s discuss it, starting with...
THE GOOD
Thor 4 was a BLAST. Every moment had energy and emotion, the action was fantastic, Gorr’s weakness and cunning was a great foil to Thor’s fear and strength, and despite how we literally saw a god fight a normal guy, it was incredibly balanced thanks Gorr’s magic weapon, the Necrosword. I think that’s what it was called.
This movie is bright, colorful, impactful, and it knows how to drive home the main story beats and keep you invested. That’s all the good stuff. Let’s move on to...
THE BAD
Thor 4 was rushed. It didn’t give itself enough time to tell the story. But even then, that pales in comparison to it’s biggest issue: “Tell, Don’t Show”. Gorr killed so many gods! ...okay, am I supposed to care? That’s very vague and disconnected. Gorr’s in the Shadow Realm! Except...let’s just explain it all at once. This was consistent throughout the film, but it was notably most prevalent in regards to Gorr himself. And it’s annoying. If I wanted to be told the story of Thor 4, I’d read a book. But this is an MCU film, so I want to watch it. SHOW, don’t TELL. But Marvel must not have gotten the memo
Also did it strike anyone else as odd that...oh yeah, Heimdel had a son??? Like, I didn’t take him for the romantic type, so Idk who he got together with or why, or why she’s suspiciously absent from the central story, but...like...Idk. I guess I kinda wish this was a predictable reveal? It feels way too out-of-the-blue lol. But now, let’s discuss my biggest and most pressing Thor 4 theory...
THE THEORY
Y’all might expect a theory about Zeus or Hercules, or maybe Valhalla, or perhaps Korg or, Idk, anything connected to the movie and it’s main characters, but I’m focused on a singular ability shown in the film: Jane’s transformation ability
One thing we have seen a million times already is Thor grabbing Mjolnir and immediately and magically transforming into his armor. Loki has a similar ability, too. Vision and Steve Rogers, however, are two people who wielded Mjolnir yet didn’t transform. I believe we have confirmation that Steve gained access to all of Thor’s powers in that moment (combination of interviews as well as Odin’s “Whosoever wields this hammer, should he be worthy, shall wield the power of Thor”, as well as the crucial moment where Steve Rogers actually magically calls Mjolnir to him, and him using lightning), however never once did we see a transformation. And I wondered...why...
So I wrote it off as “Oh, that’s not one of Thor’s abilities, then, maybe it’s just an Asgardian thing
And then Jane Foster transforms. And it’s like, “Oh...”
Now here’s where my theory starts spiraling. So, Thor’s powers include transformation, so we know for a fact Steve Rogers was capable of it; Vision, maybe not, as he’s technically not an organic being, but Steve Rogers for sure could transform if he wanted to. But he didn’t. He also used some of Thor’s powers like his lightning, but he abandoned others; he doesn’t seem any stronger than usual. The hammer hits with a boatload of force because of it’s enchantments, but the hammer is weightless to those who are worthy, and how Steve Rogers uses his shield while holding the hammer doesn’t change, meaning Thor’s strength isn’t being used. But why?
My theory is this: the power of the gods would kill any human regardless.
Jane Foster died fast because she was fighting cancer, and her mortal body had no energy while she was in Thor form...but this implies her mortal body wouldn’t have any energy anytime regardless, meaning she would slowly be draining/killing herself anyways, regardless of her health. Furthermore, Red Skull tells Captain America in The First Avenger, “You could have the power of the gods!” And then the very power Red Skull was trying to control consumed him, essentially. Furthermore, Jane Foster was slowly dying when she had the Aether inside of her.
Humans. Cannot. Wield. These. Powers. Not naturally, anyways
I suspect Captain America realized this. He saw what the Tesseract did to Red Skull. He doesn’t crave power, and he very-much-so knows it’s destructive. He only used Thor’s abilities when they were crucial to be used, otherwise he relied on physical attacks against Thanos, even after grabbing Mjolnir. So my theory is this very radical, very unlikely idea:
Zeus will destroy humanity by bestowing lightning powers to humans, under the guise of Thor. He will make everyone worship Thor, but then these powers will destroy the humans because their bodies cannot handle it. This will result in humans hating Thor, humiliating the god and turning everything against him before he faces off against Zeus, and falls from the sky.
Okay, obviously, he’ll win, but that’s what I think Zeus’ plan is, and I think Hercules is a distraction to us and to Thor regarding this plan. Hercules was a hero on occasion in the comics; what could turn him against Zeus better than finding out he was being used as distraction? That his entire quest was meaningless?
And if you need more compelling evidence, think about everything Thor has lost. His family. His home. His love. He lost his weapon, his friends (the Guardians), the Avengers, he’s lost nearly everything. But he’s always had his people, and he’s always had the trust and support of Earth, who practically worships him...what if Zeus’ plan is to take away what little Thor has left?

Set after the show’s conclusion, while Ratchet spends part of his time helping with the reconstruction of Cybertron, part of his time on Earth among their human friends and assisting Unit E. Set after the Robots in Disguise series, mostly as another division for a new part of his life, a better part with a healed Cybertron. It may consist of anything from his time as a High Councilor, to being a full time doctor once again, to teaching young robots at Rescue Bots Academy.

Also pre series, but not set on Earth nor space. Instead, this will include anything taking place on his homeworld, from before the war began to events and battles following. In other words, a younger Ratchet, ranging from being a normal doctor looking after patients without bias, to an Autobot bothered by his conscious when he must fight and use knowledge that was meant for healing to harm, and sometimes kill.

V: Shattered - Shattered Glass verse, aka blackmarket doctor/mad scientist.
With a reversed color scheme and unnerving cheerfulness even while treating someone severely injured, this doctor is still fully competent at his job, but he is not his grumpy yet comfortable counterpart. He loves science, but his study and experimentation is not ‘limited’ by ethics. He is more talkative, selfish, charming, carries a dark sense of humor rather than a dry one, and he is armed with a blaster.
Additionally, unlike the Ratchet who apprenticed for many stellar cycles to become the medic he is, Reamer’s background is significantly self-studied. Some of said hands on studying was far from moral, or legal… until the Autobots’ reign; since then, he has created various chemicals and tools used to assist Optimus Prime in warfare.
