Opinion: Tamagotchi Needs an Always on Display

We love a color Tamagotchi screen, we really do, but there is one gripe that we have and we cannot be the only ones. The color screen was introduced on Tamagotchi back in 2008 in Japan with the introduction of the Tamagotchi Plus Color (TMGC+C). The transition was from 32x30 pixel black-and-white LCD screen over a printed background to a 128x128 pixel 1.52 inch color TFT screen. What a huge improvement to see the world of Tamagotchi in color outside of your computer or phone screen.

So what’s our gripe? When the screen goes inactive on the color Tamagotchi’s, you cannot see what is going on. On older non-color Tamagotchi’s you could take a peak at what’s going on with your Tamagotchi, is there poop to clean up? Is your Tamagotchi needing some attention on a call that you missed? It was easier to see what was going on, and we were much quicker to act on it.

With the color Tamagotchi’s the screen will light up for attention calls and other activities, but if you are monitoring your Tamagotchi you really need to constantly keep waking up the Tamagotchi by clicking any one of the three buttons, or on the Tamagotchi Pix series pressing the camera shutter button. Once the screen is on then you can see what exactly is going on. If you miss attention calls or need to clean up pool on a color Tamagotchi, then you have to really be on it and constantly waking up the Tamagotchi to ensure you don’t miss a beat.

Always on displays are becoming increasingly popular on smartphones and other devices. Most recently this technology was debuted in the new iPhone 14 Pro. These screens display key information with the device being asleep. They typically draw less energy than the display always being on in full color. The Tamagotchi Friends line had an always on like mode where the background would not display but only the character would, pictured above.

Hopefully as prices come down Bandai can see if this is a new screen technology that can be implemented on a new Tamagotchi! We’d love to see our Tamagotchi constantly on the screen, and then upon clicking any of the buttons bringing the screen to life in full color. One can hope! What do you think?

Always on display feature is one of the best features that android can offer. It enables you to view the time, date, and battery percentage even when the screen is off. You can also customize it and put a photo.

Does it consume a lot of battery? The answer is no, because it's all black and only displays few information.

iOS Wishlist: Always On Display Orientation Awareness

I'm liking my iPhone 14, especially since it's an upgrade from 7. I'm even appreciating the Always On display even after suffering through an iPhone 7 battery on its last leg. But why can't my iPhone recognize it's in landscape mode and display the time and widgets in the appropriate orientation? I'm certain I'm not alone in using it either as an alarm clock at night or just another passive display while working. Future software update, perhaps? Or maybe I'm missing how to do that.

so i work for a small regional museum. remotely, i should add. the museum itself is about 2000km west, so i've never actually been there but i research and write articles about local history for them. and because the town was only formally settled in the 1920s and a lot of the museum's supporters are older, the majority of the history i write about is within, or just outside of living memory. this means that people will comment on our posts with memories or connections of their own. they'll tag their friends and family and say 'remember this?'

a few week ago, i wrote a week's worth of posts about immigration, largely displaced persons in the aftermath of the second world war. there was an outpouring of memories and people tagging their family members and sharing them. our notifications were blowing up with people saying "thanks for writing about my uncle" and "i knew them when i was young, but i never knew their story" and "she looks so beautiful here" and "our families used to get together for dinners, i'm still friends with his daughter."

regular people, non-historians, are inclined to think of history as a monolithic past leading up to the present; an easy timeline of textbook names and events. and we think of museums largely the same way. you have the louvre and you have the smithsonian and maybe a modern art museum or a niche museum for skeletons or canoes or one specific guy. museums are reserved for the big things, but they're also for the little things and people that will never be in textbooks.

and i'm thinking about the way people responded to those posts, seeing their own history remembered with the same reverence as the big stuff. maybe you never knew the people being written about, or maybe you did, and for a few days, they are alive again, and your neighbours and your classmates and your councilmen are remembering your family, and they are alive.

zoro who is so caught off guard by sanji’s kinder actions towards him is one of my favorite tropes. sanji crafting him specialized post workout snacks personally adjusted for him but still down to fight and call him names. he’s still the biggest asshole zoro has ever had the displeasure of knowing, and he’s horribly considerate. he’s a little confused but doesn’t reject any of sanji’s specialized treats. it’s not like sanji is fawning and doting over him like he does nami, so zoro feels like he can cross off sanji actually liking him from his list of reasons as to why sanji is acting like this. but it’s still fucking strange..

having thoughts about dnp saying the reason they wanted to write tabinof in the first place was to commemorate the era and give fans something to look back on and remember when they're older & how they consistently talked about the tatinof/tabinof era like it was an ending (or at least the end of their "peak")

the idea that in 2015!! they were preparing for their audience and community and their popularity to go away eventually so they wanted to create a physical reminder that "once upon a time there were these two guys called dan and phil who met each other on the internet who created this entire world"

it's like they were assuming the world of dan and phil and this community would be another trend and that their audience would lose interest in over time, especially after they'd just hit this massive peak. except it wasn't and we didn't

thinking about how that was almost 10 years ago and we're still here
