Modern AU! for rdr2 characters

These are my headcannons for each character and what I think they would do in modern times.

Characters included: Arthur, Micah, Dutch, John, Abigail, Mary-Beth, Karen, Tilly, Sadie, Strauss, Charles, Susan, Bill, Lenny, Hosea, Sean, Molly, Javier, Swanson

Arthur Morgan: 

He works a blue-collar job. He would most likely be a ranch hand, but for some reason, I can also imagine him being a plumber or welder. In his free time, he does art and sells prints on Etsy. He is still an old-fashioned gentleman (In a good way), and all of the ladies he meets swoon for him, but he is a himbo and doesn't realize they are practically in love with him. They will give him the most obvious hints, but he will think the women are just being nice. 

Micah Bell:

He's the creepy uncle that you avoid at every family gathering. He hasn't had a job in like 15 years, and no one knows how he can still pay his bills. And he also always smells like lingering alcohol and cigarettes. He will lean too close to his nieces and say extremely concerning things everyone would choose to ignore. Im also getting the vibes that he went to prison for several years, but no one knows what for.

Dutch Van Der Linde:

He sells people scams or owns a pyramid scheme business. Similar to Scentsy products, he somehow convinces all of these people to buy his products to sell to other people, telling them they will get rich by selling these products, but, in reality, he's screwing them over and making most of the money himself. 

John Marston: 

If we are talking about early Red Dead 2 Marston, he still lives in his parent's basement and plays video games on his PC all day. He also watches Andrew Tate and would try to boss Abigail around and tell her he's an alpha male. (She'd slap him and tell him to get over himself) Late rdr2 and rdr1, he's grown out of that mindset and has become a working family man. Potentially also a welder, like I said for Arthur. But any high-paying physical job works.  

I feel like Abigail, Mary-Beth, Karen, and Tilly would all have a mom group they host every week to discuss their child's newest achievements. Their husbands think that is all they do at the meetings, but they also have in-depth conversations about women's suffrage and how the world caters to men. They think of ways to better the world and bring more women together to discuss these topics and bring light to issues regarding women. The girls would run a pretty popular Facebook group where they let other women express their opinions on those topics. (Arthur is a part of the Facebook group and likes every post he sees and comments shit like, “You're doing great, ladies! Keep up the good work! 😁🥰👍”) 

Sadie would probably occasionally attend these meetings (Although I dont see her having children, she would go for the cheap wine and to hang with her friends). Sadie would also go for the in-depth conversations and bring new thoughts to the table because she is a CEO or manager for a very successful company. She would share her experiences of what it's like to be on top of the men who work for her but still be looked down upon by them simply because of her gender. She would also probably share tips on that Facebook page on how to create a successful business without having to attend years of college and give tips for all stay-at-home moms who want to be more than just moms and wives. (She would also be the cool rich aunt)

Leopold Strauss: 

He would do the same thing. He gives loans to people who he knows won't be able to pay back the money, and then when the bill comes, he'd ruin their lives and probably end up breaking up families/ relationships and send people to jail for not paying back the money in time. 

Charles Smith:

I can see him being a park ranger or working in any conservation field. Potentially even a firefighter who deals with all of the forest fires that happen in places along the West Coast. He’d also be one to do something similar to what he did in the game, but he would work with the local native tribes against companies to try to win back their lands before it gets plowed over for an Amazon factory or something. 

Susan Grimshaw:

I can see her being the mean substitute teacher who yells at everyone to get to work, and then when someone does something slightly wrong, she would yell at the whole class and be like, “In all of my years of teaching, I have never seen a class behave this badly.” Either that or she would work at the front desk of the business Sadie runs. Miss Grimshaw would NOT play with anyone who would try to be rude towards her. 

Bill Williamson: 

Ehem…a police officer. I feel like this one is self-explanatory. But he would mostly sit in his car and do nothing his entire shift. Occasionally pulling someone over for speeding. If they are a white dude, he'd would let them off with just a warning. Poor Lenny would probably get the ticket. 

Lenny Summers: 

I feel like he would be the one to graduate high school early and go to college as soon as possible. I dont know exactly what he would choose for his degree, but I feel like it would be something involving politics. Maybe that wouldn't be his major, but he would take a government class. Or Potentially going into journaling. 

Hosea Matthews:

He's the retired grandpa who used to work in a factory where he made a surprising amount of money and was able to retire early. He spends most of his days walking up at 5 in the morning to watch the sunrise and read the morning paper. And he’ll spend every opportunity he gets to take his kids or grandkids fishing. And if you stay at his house overnight or for the weekend, he gives you a bowl of ice cream every night before bed and recounts every story he could think of that happened from the last time you saw him. (Some of them are surprisingly concerning, but he is one of those badass grandpas)

Sean Macguire:

Similar to John, Sean would spend most of his time gaming on his PC and arguing with children on COD or Fortnite. But he also works at a local bar as the bartender and won't hesitate to argue with the drunk assholes and would slap a bitch if needed. But he also embarrasses himself by flirting with women who will give him dirty looks or tell him that they are gay. (I feel like Karen would also work late-night shifts at the bar with him, but shes also taking online college classes because she wants to be a social worker) 

Molly O’Shea:

Instagram and TikTok influencer 100%, and lots of brands like to sponsor her and send her free stuff (Mostly because of Dutch’s business.) and she posts videos of her and Dutch, and everyone in the comments freaks out about how he is grooming her because of their age difference but she denies it all and says that they are actually in love.  But then she would post a video to that one sound, “My god this reminds me of when we were young.” And Molly be like 8, and Dutch be in his mid-to-late 20s. 

Javier Escuella: 

He’d be a musician. He would have started out in a shitty garage band with Sean and John or something, but then he’d realize he actually wants to be a serious musician while the other guys were just messing around. So he’d leave and make solo music that blows up, and he ends up going on tour, and making a lot of money and becoming hugely successful. 

Reverend Swanson:

The preacher you always see in the corner of the bar Sean works at. And if you went up to him and started talking to him, he’d tell you the most profound things. He would tell you about his life when he was younger and what happened that made him lose hope, but he would motivate you to never give up. He’d be that person you meet by chance for a few seconds that you would never forget. Hosea probably invites him to go fishing with him from time to time. But instead of fishing, Swanson stares at the water ripples in silence. Hosea would let him sit in silence and let Swanson enjoy the company and the time to think while being sober.

ANON….THANK U…..i feel like a big problem with the dgs fandom in particular is that they dont really consider how 2-5 affects character dynamics post-canon? because all the change is right there. ive talked about this but its like portraying kazuma’s relationship with ryuunosuke as Exactly The Same post-canon when it would be DRASTICALLY different despite them still loving each other very much, because ryuunosuke now sees all of kazuma. he was only seeing a very small part of who he was before, and his entire perception of his best friend got dismantled and replaced by a completely different one in a really short period of time.

the exact same is true for kazuma and barok: they have despised each other so deeply and irrevocably for a DECADE and now suddenly they have to accept the fact that nobody really did anything wrong. kazuma tried to send barok to his death, but he was doing it out of grief and rage built up over ten years. barok convicted genshin and that led to him dying, but he was young and naïve and grieving and being manipulated by stronghart the entire time. genshin killed klint but he did so honorably. klint was a murderer but all he wanted was to make his home a better place for the people in it. its all so complicated and nobody is completely innocent or completely at fault. everyone did something wrong for good reasons and everyone did something good for the wrong reasons. it’s too nuanced of a situation for them to truly go on hating each other the way they used to, because they’re both MATURE ADULTS who can understand the intricacies of the situation.

do i think they dunk on each other post-canon? i mean. yes. obviously. do i think they HATE each other, still, to this inane degree? no. obviously. their relationship is going to be strained. there’s literally no way that it wouldn’t be. but they respect each other, they hold each other in high regard, and they’re respectful. and it sucks because these changes in dynamics are literally SHOWN at the end of 2-5 but people just like. cant. comprehend them. like i just don’t get it. also if kazuma is going to hate anyone in the cast its going to be herlock like he fucking SHIPPED HIS AMNESIAC CORPSE TO CHINA and never apologized for it i would NOT be letting that go anytime soon

i think she might be an introvert too. i think it should be relevant to remind everyone that not all introverts are shy and closed off, and not all shy and closed off people are introverts; being an introvert just means you like being able to do stuff by yourself + having a lower social battery.. and i think that fits pomni really well, at least based off of the pilot alone. you guys both understand your needs in regards to outside stimulation and socialization, and you both work to make sure your needs are met! often times, activites between the two of you are calmer and more down to earth rather than something high energy and spontaneous... i think you guys do a lot of planning and routine with stuff and try to stick to it

ZOOBLE:

hands down zooble is also an introvert + i just think they dont like most people. i dont want to say cynical.... but they definitely arent always trying to see the best in everyone at all times... a lot of the times, when you two are hanging out, its just you two quietly existing in the same room. there isnt much conversation, though when there is one you guys can talk for a while on the topic.. i think zooble might have a lower social battery than most, so sometimes theyre going to need their alone time.. though i do think they would communicate that youre not annoying or bothering them, that they just need a minute. they would respect you if you ever needed the same!

LoZ - Hylia as a Character

Honestly, I really like the fact that Zelda/Hylia admits, rather openly, in fact, that what she did was wrong. Then, she owns up to it.

They could've gone the route that "this is destiny, you must" or made it seem like something entirely righteous & that the fact that it saves everyone automatically makes it okay, but the writers didn't.

What happened. What Hylia put into place was a necessary evil, but still wrong by its very nature of being a necessary EVIL. She manipulated Link, not because she wanted to, or because she was a bad person, but because it was the ONLY way that she could see things working out for the benefit of as many people involved as possible.

Still doesn't make it right, but it makes it understandable. Which are 2 very different things. And I've seen a lot of people conflating the 2. For whatever reason not realizing that you can understand why someone did something & that that something can still be wrong or morally questionable. And that these are 2 things that can exist at the same time.

Because Zelda said it best, "it was a war." It wasn't like what SS Link had experienced, where he was fighting most enemies one on one & it was really only himself who was in danger at a given moment. There were battles with armies & even the game says that the demons killed without mercy. In situations like that, you might have to do things that compromise your own morals & I just...

It makes Hylia so much more human in a way. She's not like the 3 golden goddesses who you only really interact with individuals who have their names & who may just be people that resemble them. (Minish Cap, Oracle of Seasons, & Oracle of Ages.) SS Zelda actually remembers being Hylia.

Thus meaning that SS Link's interaction with SS Zelda in that scene before putting herself to sleep, was the closest interaction any Link has ever had with an actual higher deity.

You get her actual opinion. Her regrets, her apologies. Seriously, she apologizes repeatedly. While it may be filtered through Zelda, who obviously cares very deeply about Link (yes, I ship zelink here, what of it), as she said, she was both Hylia & Zelda. Specifically, still Link's Zelda.

And I... I can't hate Hylia as a result.

Which causes me to not really understand the Hylia hate that I've seen here & there.

Like, it isn't Hylia's fault that she, Link, & Ganondorf were cursed. That was all The Bringer of Demise & his toddlerish butthurt over losing to not just a mortal, but a mortal teen. He cursed them, not Hylia. And what exactly do people think Hylia could've done?

What were her other options? She wasn't a goddess anymore at the time! And we dont even know the rules regarding the Hyrulean gods! There could be some sort of rule of non-interference or only indirect interference unless you give up your godhood that we don't know about!

And, if she hadn't done something, then think about what could've happened as a result.

According to the information that we currently have, Demise would've taken over & made a wish that we don't even know. Not only that, but he had apparently been killing so many humans that Hylia felt the need to lift pieces of land into the air via nothing but magic to keep Demise away from them! Like putting a toy up too high for a kid to reach.

This suggests that they nearly went extinct!

Also keep in mind that she literally gave up her godhood to keep everyone safe!! That's... that's huge!

Also, I hate that there are fans out there who blame Sky for them being cursed!

Dude just finished a fight with a Daimaō (yōkai general). A battle that involved a LOT of lightning striking the Master Sword, which is known to cause temporary deafness, disorientation, ect.

He likely wasn't even aware that the Bringer of Demise had cursed him & Zelda both.

The only person anyone should be blaming here is Demise.

Though, that does bring into question why Fi didn't notify Link of this fact.

joner: aroace. romance-neutral. this is all self projection on my part, i think joner as a character just prefers friendships to relationships and romance would make him uncomfortable but hes very supportive of others. he/him (impartial to she/her though)

kelly: always been transfem somehow to me. transhet. they/them and VERY occasionally they/she, really depends on the mood

michela: bigender boygirl but doesn't really talk about it, especially in those words. would date whoever but high preference for dudes. would label her preference for guys as either straight or gay depending on the context. she/her

courtney: calls themselves non-binary for binary people but it's more complicated than that. sapphic with an itty bitty tiny like for guys they they're still sorting out (is it platonic? romantic? they don't know) . they/them

I have so many Simon thoughts and I can’t believe the one to lick them all off was this: but would he draw the line at pork?

Just saw this ask now so apologies if it's been sitting in my inbox for a while!

Quick mention here that I'm not Muslim myself and most of my (limited) knowledge comes from talking with friends irl and the internet

but i believe Simon wouldn't eat pork. I don't think it's something he's ever really tried, especially growing up and living in Dearborn, which has one of the highest Muslim populations in the US, there wouldn't be a super high presence of it (I'm assuming) or social pressures surrounding eating it from his peers, who im assuming are also predominantly Muslim from what we know of his friendships precanon.

To be honest, I think the religiously prohibited substance he'd be most inclined to/likely to have consumed at some point to be alcohol. I mean when we meet Simon, he's fallen on hard times, like he's lost his job and turned to stealing cars and feels like he's let down his family and community, especially at least after the events that follow with him getting the ring the way he did. I'm not saying here that I think he did drink before we meet him in canon, but I think it's more likely to have happened than him eating pork, especially with the social pressures and societal depiction of alcohol the way they are.

Simon and his relationship with religion is something very interesting to me (that I admittedly know very little about) as there definitely seems to be a contradiction in some of his actions, with Simon quoting the Quran at Guy and talking about how much his religion means to him one page, and then of course having a tattoo that also means a lot to him (but is banned by his religion) at the same time. I think this more complex relationship with religion is something very human about Simon as a character, as people and their relationships with religion are oftentimes complicated and not cut and dry. It does make it difficult for his fans though as theres a lot we dont know, as Simon's relationship with religion is one I think could really use more exploration on page, especially in regard to this contradiction and his relationship with the rules of Islam as a whole.

#pork in particular is something i don't really see simon having any relationship with at all to be honest growing up in a home and #surrounded by a community that laregely doesnt eat it #and of his own religion i dont see it in particular being some #thing he would feel inclined to eat at any point. especially with when he grew up and the abuse he recieved because of his religion that im #sure pork played a role in as one of the main things people know about like islam and dietary restrictions and rules. #but thats my take on it i suppose #coming of course from someone who isnt a member of the religion and is mainly going off of general knowledge his character background and a #bit of research ive done on the area #anyways as always if im off base here someone let me know but this is the impression i got in terms of this question #thanks for the ask though! #sorry if it was sitting there for a while i never got a notification #answered #simon baz #blah

I'm not a Nazi, in the full screenshots which they cropped out, I said I had another server with absolutely no rules (besides dont be a pedo), and I was saying that in that server, everything was allowed. You people need to understand that not being able to care about something does NOT mean you support it. Its not black or white

I have NEVER said anything or made jokes regarding rape/sa, that is actually one of the things (including pedophilia) that I am very morally against. I have not spent so much of my time helping my friends report their rapists, helping vulnerable people get out of extortion online, and being there for the people in my life who have experienced that just for some randos online to lie to people about me.

The most I have made is your mom jokes and necro jokes, which I personally don't consider morally wrong, and if they are, then I'll work on it, but I don't have the same understanding of things like that. I never learned where the line is like most people have, and thats why Im dedicated to learning it in adulthood

And do not make drug use a moral issue. My "morality" about drug use is completely nonexistent because I grew up in that. I have spent many years heavily involved with drugs, I know exactly what its like, and nothing about drugs is a moral issue.

And here again the same issue of straight up fucking ableism bro. Don't try to shame me for not having conventional morals when you know damn well I, and many other people, struggle with conditions that impact that (ASPD). Hearing about the ableism towards people like me from these guys isn't surprising in the slightest

I'm not gonna say I didn't say those things, cuz like I said, I said those things, I made those jokes, and I've said worse. The difference now is that those things were said more than a year ago. It's insane how you act high and mighty and then judge me on things I said that long ago to friends who made the same jokes and encouraged that kind of behaviour (none of which I talk to anymore, for the exact reason that they encouraged my bad behaviour).

I said what I said, I know it was wrong, I take full accountability. I have spent my time since doing my best to be more than that. I have spent a lot of my time trying to adjust to moral and social norms, even when it gets really difficult and I have to deal with people like this who wont give me space to grow and change for the better.

I have amazing friends and mutuals and people in my life who support me because they know how hard I try. My girlfriend even is a fucking hardass and would NOT have put up with any of my shit if she didn't see how hard I try. I've spent a lot of time with people who are like how I was, people who have done and said much worse things than me, and I understand how uncomfortable and jarring it is. Thats exactly why I'm so passionate about being more than that. And thats why this situation bothers me so much.

You all talk about me and how I mention my disorder as if you're not just shitting on stuff that is directly tied into having ASPD. And to hear that you have a history of that stuff? Im not crazy to say theres a lot of ableism going on here. I will always be open and honest about the person I have been, but I want it to be used as a reference point for how much I've grown and changed since then.

I will always be an advocate for people like me. I will always give support and speak out for those who struggle with being treated like a bad person because of the things they say, not because of who they are. (And if you know anything about people, you know theres a huge difference)

You guys have been on me for MONTHS way after I blocked and went on with my life. In those months you've spent doing nothing but nitpicking everything single thing Ive ever done and constantly spreading negativity, I have been working on myself, and I hope that somewhere along the line, you guys have or will too

so I have a friend who ghosted me twice and I know the easy answer to this is cut them off … yes but it’s not as easy because we did communicate and it just sucks that I had to find out she got engaged through rumors and we saw each other a few times then she ghosted bc she called off her own wedding so I gave her the spce she needed but you know it’s been two years she been dragging this same excuse instead of asking for help I offered but still she insisted that she suppress it anyways fast forward I find out she gets married through social media . I just want to know if I’m on the wrong for reacting and being frustrating with her . We spoke even before and she failed to update me and now that I confronted she keeps justifying her ghosting by say life happens it’s about practicality also the fact that everyone has a reason that’s not known to one another just to justify her not communicating with me and ghosting . So, I’m going to make multiple points here and look at some of these points from a variety of angles but i will just say before anything as a disclaimer I’m seeing it as one guy with very little context. All things like this are entirely case by case and you would know this person better than me so anything i say just take with a pinch of salt.

I think whats best to really consider is a) the reason she ghosted you particularly. Was it you amongst many others or was it you because of a significance you play in complicating their emotions etc. b) how close you were.

The simple answer aside from cutting this person off is as an outsider looking in it doesn’t really look like she owes you anything. Whilst i risk sounding blunt saying this I’m a firm believer in the fact no one is owed or should expect anything. It’s decency to get an explanation and i would hope you would get one. I have been ghosted by people very close to my heart and the one thing that hurt was the lack of explanation, i just wake up and bam I’m blocked. But whilst its nice to get one by no means would anyone have to nor would they have to ask you for help.

Now context is paramount as if you are being blocked along with 50 people then that would suggest she just wants to be alone and maybe doesnt want to have to tell the whole world updates on her life. Getting married is a massive commitment which im sure is exhausting enough so maybe thinking to explain it to people you dont have to isnt the most appealing as it probably gets to a point where it becomes exhausting going through the motions of telling someone again.

By contrast again contextually dependant maybe she is blocking you specifically because you play that role in complicating emotions.

Additionally how did you approach the subject when you knew? If this person is struggling to stay afloat did you go to them with support and excitement of their news or did you immediately go with hostility and confront them? As if this was the case it could play support to why she struggles to communicate with you. These things go both ways and its definitely worth looking back on how you acted to see if you were the most approachable version of yourself.

Ive been in your position and i truly do understand how you feel and what i have discussed above is things i found years later when reflecting on the way i acted and by no means is intended to be intentionally challenging.

To summarise, people don’t owe you shit, know your worth, however if you truly feel mistreated as hard as it is and i know it is, it might be time to throw in the towel on this one.

I cant believe Owl House is ending in two days ;-; I’m excited and sad and all sorts of things. Sad becuase its ending and its such a great show, BUT at the same time excited because, I want to see how the story ends! Dont we all with a story? Hopefully it has a happy ending. I mean theyve done very well despite being cancelled, theyve made the most of the time they had rather than gave up? I respect that, same with Infinity Train. They did the best they could in time they had, rather than “Ah slap any old thing together who cares.” I found Cage of eden and the Unfortunate events books dissapionting this way.

I always hoped I would finish this, but yknow how it goes sometimes. THIS is a Owl House “Little Mermaid Au”.

Luz is a mermaid princess, but, despite her royalty, people still mock her and see her as a piece that doesent fit. Other kids openly tease and call her “Luzer”, and even the advisors and royal court dont approve of her, she doesnet behave much less how a PRINCESS should.

King is her “Flounder” :) Her best friend and eager helper in her adventures and curiosties. But Queen Camilla grows worried over how Luz behaves and, decides to send her away to perhaps a sort of boarding school to teach her to be, better? Much like sending her to camp in the cartoon, or even Luca’s parents sending him to another part of the sea?(That part made me think of a young boy being sent to a monastary).

Meaning well but, nevertheless hurting her daughter... If, nobody wants her, not even her Mother, then, Luz feels maybe she should just dissapear? Run away?

The night she runs away she runs into Eda, the sea witch. Sea witches arent evil in this world, but people do assume so or look there nose down at them? There happy to go to them for spells and stuff but see them as lesser beings, second class citizens.

If the kid wants to run away, she ought to try the human world! Thats the place, the most fun, so much to explore. Eda still goes there, collectign objects, mingling amongst the humans... So, she takes Luz in, she has a shack on the land. She can switch her and Kings tails for legs easy!

Much like King Triton Camilla is fretful when Luz goes missing, blaming herself for her daughter running away.

Other characters to make an appearence will of course be Willow and Gus, and in there case, instead of admiring humans, its mermaids? Its so exciting to meet one!

Amity is a princess in this version, and very unhappy one at that. Under a lot of pressure from her mother, not able to be herself, more a pretty little wind up doll that is meant to do what shes told... But starts to break away from that, when meeting Luz. They start to fall in love, happiness. I think Hunter would be Amity’s guard? Luz is also in a spot of danger. MERMAIDS are held in high regard, as trophys. Possessing such a creature like a fish in a tank in your home is a great status symbol. If Odalia had any idea Luz was a mermaid she’d lock her up in there palace. Amity is naturally worried for her girlfriends safety.

A Tale of Sirens & Pirates

I thought up this world/story a while back and initially wanted to turn it into a mcrp, [More information about that aspect in the video linked here], however I still wanted to post some of the information here for if anyone had been interested about it, so here it all is, worldbuilding and the lore of the story.

In the Ranora Sea there lived three uniquely sentient lifeforms, Humans, Sirens, and Mermaids. Each group lived separate from another, Mermaids opposing Sirens and steering clear of them, Sirens opposing Humans, luring them in as their food source, and Humans opposing Mermaids, hunting them down for their beauty and mythical/unnatural features. They had their clear cut reasons to avoid one another, but pirates from the humans groups sought to make a living from the mythical creatures hidden in the vast ocean, of deep dark water. Pirates often would go out into the ocean looking for riches, and stumble across Mermaids on accident, though they often didnt live to tell the tale, and those who did regaled the stories of the beautiful ocean beings splashing in and out of the water like dolphins. Alternatively on the other hand, Pirates who ran into sirens never lived long. They'd lure the Pirates in with their greatest desires, treasure, adventure, etcetera. Once the Pirates changed their ships directions they caused Pirates often to crash their ships and drown, or alternatively get themselves crushed. Conflict between the groups was often kept to a minimum where possible, with the exception of the Humans and the Sirens, however the tensions were still high, and over time it only got worse...

Sirens

There are two variants of Sirens; those of the sky, and those of the sea. They both functioned nearly the same, singing out Humans greatest desires to lure them in for sustenance, the only difference between the two was that the Sky Sirens could fly at great speeds, and the Sea Sirens could swim at exponential speeds. Unlike popular belief, Asexual and Aromantic individuals are not immune from their songs, as the desires are not directly intimacy or love based, alongside there are some desires they may be horribly repulsed by, and others they enjoy singing about, and may let a Human live if they particularly like or enjoy their desire. — Unlike Mermaids they can shift into a humanoid form.

Mermaids

They are often regarded as the kindest of the three groups, but in reality they can be as ruthless as the other two combined. They feed off ocean life, such as fish, sharks, dolphins, etcetera. They willingly choose to eliminate those who have seen them, as they dont want their precious peace to be left unbalanced. They have a strict hierarchy and strict rules, that some rare instances defy against or disagree with, and are often shunned from the group, and eventually die. — Unlike Sirens they can not shift into a more humanoid form.

Pirates

A sub-group of humans who commit the act of piracy. Often they plunder and pillage the things they seek after, however there are instances in which they will leave a location or group alone per request of an employer or a payment/bribe from said group. Some Pirates are employed by people in power such as the crown, and in other instances may be hired on as faux mercenaries, and others work on their own for their own goals. They are considered the lesser of the evils.

Important Locations

Ranora Sea - The oceanic home of the Sirens & Mermaids, as well as the ocean surrounding the tropical port town.

Reefend Port - The main town setting of the story, a place ruled under royalty and run seemingly well, a place open to most Pirates.

The gacha design had initially been a quick mock up of the design to see if I even liked it in the first place, in the end I did. The necklace seen in most of the designs was essentially in lore what allowed them to turn into a more humanoid form, but in functionality on the Minecraft side of things it was a physical representation of the mermaid necklace's from the Mermaid Tail Mod. (Which specific one I dont remember, but I believe it was one of the old-school styled ones)

Her memories don’t come *back* but she experiences really intense deja vu. The best way I can describe the experience is the sense of being “within and without”.

Dreams are really intense, whether they’re good or bad. And even though she forgets as soon as she wakes up, her body remembers.

She grows close with Norman and Ray again pretty much overnight, though it takes a little more time for her to get used to everyone else. It’s probably super overwhelming, but Emma’s cheerful disposition never changes so she does her best to take it all in stride.

Being a stranger to herself, then learning who she used to be deeply shakes her confidence. How can she live up to the stories about this hero who tore her way through dimensions and faced down a god? She’s scared of letting everyone down.

I imagine she develops a lot of anxiety, which of course Norman and Ray would help her work through (in my perfect post-canon world they all have amazing therapists and are on the road to healing lmao). I think post-canon Emma would struggle with being lonely despite being surrounded by people who love her - which was confirmed by that little moment in the bonus chapter. This comes to pass, though! It just takes some time, and a lot of honest communication.

She takes online classes and accidentally graduates with her high school diploma and an associates degree in like two weeks because she hyperfixated on it, like as a fun computer game. She likes every subject but she’s probably most interested in topics surrounding psychology, communications, and early childhood development.

I imagine a handful of the demon world kids will end up being involved in the human world’s politics in some way and while I don’t see any of the trio as politicians, I can see them being ambassadors in some form. Don’t ask me for details because I don’t have any lol I just know they all attend world peace meetings and are held in very high regard. Emma in particular would be concerned with making sure everyone in the world is taken care of and would spearhead humanitarian efforts.

She’s both different and somehow exactly the same. She’s still stubborn, cheerful and caring. She still loves games and is curious about everything. She doesn’t remember them, yet she’ll surprise them by saying the same exact things she’s said before, or coming to the same Only-Emma kind of conclusion.

Norman and Ray now really struggle against her in chess. She used to be so much easier to beat. Now she’s a terror.

im actually not kidding when i say, instate the matriarchy. i dont want equality between the sexes, i want equity - which i believe leads to matriarchy.

the female is not like the male. this is actually a point of conflict ive seen before between some islamic feminists and some branches of western second wave/radical feminism and even marxist feminism and even liberal feminists; tho its not like theres a super distinct line between the first 3, the women of colour of the second wave had a particular influence on some of the most prominent islamic feminists, and ive seen plenty of marxist influence, open international discourse and all. this is also a point of conflict between some branches of radical feminism and separatist and/or pro-matriarchy branches

some branches of western radical feminism hold that the male and the female are equal. the biological difference does not mean that one sex is either above or below the other, it does not mean women should be treated different than men and vice versa. children should be rised ideally in a world which has abolished gender, in which their biological sex will not mean they get socialized one way or another. no "you wear this you wear that, you play with this you play with that, youre allowed x and youre not allowed y". the goal is equality between the sexes, the abolition of gender stereotypes, the abolition of the importance of sex differences in how we treat each other. the liberation of women from patriarchy and all its many facets etc etc. okay, good goal, very high goal as it is with all radical movements, generally im on board with this

but, to say what many have said before - the female is not like the male, and this must be taken into account. different =/= inferior. the female will always be unique in her ability to reproduce, which is the root cause of most of our opression anyway, she will always continue to be uniquely vulnerable and require certain things because of this difference....despite islam functioning in most cases as a patriarchal system (the worlds largest matriarchy is the Minangkabau, an indonesia people. the islamic system exists at the same time as the indigenous matrinilial system. v cool), this i suppose would be the idea you Hear but not See often, that women get special benefits and privileges in islam and have more rights then men in some regards, that a woman ought to be treated like a queen. well, its like that, except Actually putting it into practice, and not in a patriarchal system. i do not believe equality gives woman her deserved role and protection

speaking in theoretics of where to aim - society would need to accomondate for the differences between male and female. we may try our best to abolish gender stereotypes, but sex differences are a material reality which we will always have to negotiate with - and were going to have to keep society from sliding back into a patriarchy and males Once Again taking advantage of our reproduce labour. so, how do we do this? well, some things:

the female, due to her reproductive capabilities, is unique in that she can be raped with the purpose not only of rape itself, but the purpose of producing children - in a patrilinial system, these children being to the benefit of the male and his wealth and influence (they take his name, they are under his control to marry off to increse social standing&wealth etc girls get married off for wealth and connections boys do too but differently. children also can provide household and farm labour, also to the males benefit as he owns land and family wealth)

this is an obvious bastardazation however, of the role of woman as life giver, as mother, as the one who sacrifices to create and birth a child. all the male does is shoot sperm, the sperm actually not being half of the genetic material even. the female egg holds most of it, and the female body and psyche and soul is the one which actually does all of the work to create, sustain, and give birth to a child. unfortunately, we are not seahorses. it is her body alone who can make new bone, new flesh, her body which can grow another heart and conciousness. probably one of the most batshit and awe-striking things in existence. the male does barely a single damn thing to this - and then the male creates male gods in his image and dares say that male gods created humankind! hah! and he dares to say the female - which he owes his very existence to, is inferior and unholy! he has no right claiming the child with his name, for his line of the family and benefit. he has no right to claim the role of life giver, and he has no right to subjugate the female and thus his mother to whom he owes his entire life, and to whom we owe the existence of human civilization.

she is also the primary caregiver of the child, naturally. as i said in that other post, this is because shes the one who carries the baby, and the one who breastfeeds for months-years. it is on her that the child is primarily dependent on and cannot survive without. the existence of baby formula and such is a very new invention, an expensive one, and, also, studies have shown that it is lacking in comparison by a whole bunch of things (a big one being the transfer of antibodies hormones etc etc which increse immunity and chances of survival). part of the reason why children were nursed for longer is that while in times of food scarcity it may be very hard to feed a toddler, the female body still produces milk under extreme circumstances of malnournishment; up to a point. so, point being, she's the primary caregiver and have been through history

it is her line, then, which the child should pass through - the matrilinial line. it is her who is responsible for giving life and sustaining life, her labour and effort, her sacrifice and potential death, her which is before anyone else responsable for shaping the life of a human. i also hold that, yes, the female and the mother Should be given spiritual and communal respect and power specifically because of this - though not in such a way which diminishes the importance of women who cannot give birth or do not wish to give birth.

Anthropological/arch research etc discovers all the time, the woman is the cradel of civilization, not the male. Most cave paintings are made by women. As it is often said, as has been said by many, woman in actuality invented culture and society- and without her there would be nothing. Also why some of the earliest human societies were matriarchal. Nope they werent perfect as some radfem theory says but uhh, better. We owe everything to the women who were our first ancestors in Africa. Everything - as we owe everything to nature. It was the male who forgot this, whose ego takes over, who dared to proclaim that he is both above woman and above nature at once, so that he may subjugate us both to his benefit.

Apart from this - that i think some kinds of feminism do not give the woman and mother the proper respect for being the creator of life - society needs to accommodate this. It needs to be one which allows for the female sex a period long enough of stability, rest, saftey, and free time not only to carry a pregnancy but to raise a child. If society wishes to do more than just Pretend to care for the mother and pregnant women and babies - as the conservatives do - then society needs to create systems of communal support. We must also take into account that in the vast majority of cases, it is the woman who ends up a single mother and takes on this role, not the male. This is already in a regard a privilege over males, or rather an unavoidable difference in rights which arises. I would also include here that as the female menstruates monthly, and this is known to often be a painful, exhausting, and even disabilitating thing, society ought to accommodate for this too. yes. every month. males have been shoving women in menstrual huts or banishing them from villages globally - nepal parts of africa some pre-colonial american indigenous tribes, just a few off of the top of my head. no. how about we do the exact damn opposite and respect the female body, reproductive system, and person/human which is the whole reason any of us exist, and accomodate women and girls instead. how about maybe instead of considering it a dirty or unholy thing, we do the opposite.

One of the highest causes of death of pregnant women is being killed by their male partners. If not the highest cause of death. This is also something we need to protect women from, and why i think partial segregation of the sexes must exist. Full segregation of the female sex, as in societies with no men, has been achieved at smaller levels (the umoja village in Kenya and the several matriarchal all-female villages that followed), but at a larger scale this is,, i dont place my bets on this. Partial segregation however i think can be done. Taking example from the matriarchal Mosuo people of china perhaps, in which the matrilinial female line all lives together and some village women live together separate from men - men may only visit for relations. This protects not only pregnant women, but infact girls and boys from being molested (not that females dont rape, just at incredibly lower statistic rates), it also protects women and their children from domestic abuse and being murdered. Living alone with a male can be very dangerous - so. how abt we do less of that. It also happens so often that the woman just ends up doing so much work for the man and being exploited - how about we do less of that. This also means that boys grow up with several female role models and, like, seeing women as human beings

Next, apart from the reproductive thing. Females tend to be smaller and less strong. Yea this isnt always the case. This also has something to do with the effects of patriarchy being around for so long, and also with women and girls often not being encouraged to work out and develop as much as men, and being fed less. Still, generally speaking, in many cases, mannnyy cases males are the stronger sex, physically. which is why in many societies across the globe sex roles are divided with them doing harder manual labour. they tend to be bigger and develop muscle mass different than us....,, humans out of the ape families dont have drastic sexual dymorphism (more visible in gorillas per example) but we still have it. issue here being. it is actually very easy for most males to kill a female. theres case upon case of /teenage/ boys raping and killing grown adult women. case after case. most men do indeed have the strength to trap or strangle or kill a female, very quickly.

so. this is another reason why women need special protection in society. laws which acknowledge this (which we dont have, because of the difference when women get physically attacked they will use objects to defend themselves, but the courts will not admit this and punish them). protection not only to flee to a place of saftey in domestic abuse cases, but protection in general. this is why women living with women is a ,,, much safter idea. ill choose to have a go at it with a random woman any day than even a teenage boy.

There's other ones for sure but the general idea is there; equality wouldnt take this into consideration. The female is not like the male. For there to be equity, the difference needs to be acknowledged and balanced.

Must also say, i have never seen a matriarchy do what patriarchy had done. never. not once. The patriarchy subjugates and opresses, it rapes, it enslaves, it tortures, it exploits, it kills. It in one way or another declares the Woman as less than male and claims merit for her labour.Almost every single damn time..... Matriarchies do not do this. They do not subjugate males, they do not torture them, rape them, enslave them, kill them. When men are in power it is a nightmare. When women are in power, it is not, and not only is the male treated as human, but finally the Female as well - and she gets to know what it is to live a life free of fear and psychological subjugation.

please like this post if you read the rant because im literally just screaming into rhe void and i need literally anyone to listen to me right now

the family member i was closest to for most of my life and who basically guided me through being a teenager and coming out just verbally degraded me for 10 minutes using the exact same trigger words that my abusive dad always did.

i typed out what happeneed 3 times in 3 different ways and it only makes me feel worse. there was a point in my life where she was my safe person. she was the person that i could go to whenever i didn't have anyone else to talk to or i felt like no one would listen to me. she has always gone out of her way to offer her home as a safe space for me no matter what has been going on in my life.

very very long story short, my grandma's health is declining because she has heart failure. my aunt does not take care of her own health and has had to undergo emergency surgery 3 times in the past year (2022). she is getting a knee replacement on Monday.

i don't want to give out too much information because of privacy reasons but basically my grandma is in heart failure. she's 79 years old and has a lot of other medical problems that generally make her very high risk in general.

basically my grandma has convinced herself that she absolutely needs to accompany my aunt to her knee surgery. and my aunt is just, letting it happen? even though my aunt has told me multiple times that having grandma in a car for long periods of time is very dangerous for her health. it's the reason i take an 8 hour fucking road trip to see her as often as i can.

all i said was "i gotta say that i'm really worried about grandma coming along with you when you have used the words 'very dangerous' to describe car trips for her."

these are the exact words that i used.

immediately it's like a flip switched. i didn't even have time to breathe before she started shrieking like a banshee telling me that i'm disrespecting her by saying that she can't take care of my grandma and disrespecting my grandma by saying that she can't do what she wants. she kept saying "well i'm sorry that you feel that way" a lot more shit that i'm not going to sit here and upset myself by typing out.

i've been crying on and off for almost 6 hours now. i don't know what i did wrong. i don't know what to do. i want my grandma to be a part of my life but my access to her is entirely through my aunt. i want to talk to my grandma about all of this but my aunt won't let me talk to her. i'm so fucking scared for her and i feel really helpless and triggered about things that happened with my dad.

i dont want to get into it fully but basically my dad lied to my face for years about the status of his health and instructed his doctors to reiterate those lies so i wouldn't find out. two days after my 18th birthday he signed me up as his new medical proxy and continued to lie to me about his health despite forcing me to sign legal documents that would give me power of attorney if he were to go unconscious and i had to make choices for him. i only found out that he was dying when he screamed "you need to do [whatever he was yelling about] because i'm dying!" in my face. he was.

cut to a few years later and i have now developed crippling anxiety when people tell me they're having issues with their health. there will always be a part of me that feels like i'm being lied to, or that someone is either overexaggerating or underexaggerating how bad their illness is to manipulate me. most of the time when i feel like this i can recognize it as anxiety. i really do feel like i've made a lot of progress regarding that, because i know that nobody besides my dad would lie to me like that.

she understood how i felt like the choices that my father made took that relationship away from both of us. everyone else tried to convince me to show my dad sympathy, but my aunt made a point to validate my feelings in that his "out of sight out of mind" mindset was extremely damaging and traumatic for me and my brother.

except for my aunt, now, apparently??? which really fucks me up because she knows how much it damaged me emotionally. our relationship began to deteriorate when i hit my early 20s and it became clear to me that she doesn't even try to take care of HERSELF. she knew her knees were bad but she didn't go to the doctor until she couldn't walk. she knew she had kidney and gall bladder problems but she didn't go to the doctor or attempt to change her diet until she literally went into organ failure and almost died from sepsis. sinks, bathtubs, countertops, lights, the oven. all have broken and she just, did not fix it! she and my grandma washed their hands in the bathtub for months until my brother came to visit and fixed it for her. instead of saying thank you she yelled at him that she didnt need help . just including this to help paint the picture of how bad at managing literally everything is. oh, and there was a week in the Louisiana summer heat where the AC broke and she waited a week before calling someone to fix it. A WEEK. IN THE LOUISIANA SUMMER TIME. A 79 YEAR OLD WOMAN.

now i just feel like. well who the hell is this cunt and what did she do with my aunt? why the fuck is she talking to me like this???? i haven't felt like this since i was a teenager. i'm angry that she feels comfortable putting my grandma's health at risk. i'm horrified by the way that she spoke to me. i'm disgusted that i ever thought it could emotionally connect with someone who is related to my dad.

there are more reasons that we have grown apart (including a recent interest in alt-right conspiracy theories) but overall it was important to me to have a relationship with the people in that house because they're the only one left on that side of the family. so i would bite my tongue because i knew she wasn't actually going to change. she would just brush it off. but it's different when you're letting my grandma put herself at risk. and why? "because grandma wants to come"

well personally i would rather grandma be mad than dead. but apparently expressing this is extremely rude and i am a "nasty little girl that needs to learn her place"

if it wasn't for grandma i would have already gone no contact. it would hurt me a lot to cut them off but i feel the red flags popping up more than ever. aunt won't let my grandma talk to me for more than a minute or two and when i see her in person she won't let me back into her bedroom. i have caught aunt in multiple lies concerning covid safety, hanging around meth users, and an abusive ex-husband of the woman who lives with her (don't even get me started).

it doesn't seem like a possibility for me to stay in my grandma's life when i've gone no contact with her caretaker. all i want to do is talk to her. i don't know what to do. i don't want her to die. she's the only grandparent i have left and i already rarely see her because she lives so far away. all my other family is dead.

it genuinely shocks me how well people can hide their true colors. if this bitch kills my grandma i will never let her forget about it until the day she dies.

This is that famous ASK I have spoken about at the beginning of me answering ASKS.I received this ASK August 22, 2022 and it took me this long because of how I decided to tackle it. In addition, the tone of the whole ASK got me a bit itchy in all the wrong places, so I’ve been trying to keep my cringe at bay.

Hence … dear Anon, I do apologize for the delay in replying to this ASK, but here I am! And I’ll discuss the cringe-feeling I had with the tone at the very end, so hang in there with me that is if you are still around, cause gurl/boi/enby more than half a year is admittedly a long-ass time, I’ll give you that 😬😬.

So I’ve begun speaking about Minimoni and NamKook in the posts right here so please feel free to read those → MINIMONI & NAMKOOK. For the rest, let’s beginning with the first part of the ASK.

“JIKOOK IN JAPAN” 

Anon is referring to a specific infamous? moment that happened during BTS’ AbemaTV Christmas Special interview on December 21, 2017, which you can find kindly translated here by BangtanSubs. As always I base whatever I discuss on all the Original Content (OC) provided so, I’d always advise watching this content before continuing reading if you haven’t already.

I think I have touched the subject of translating privately in my DM, but I can’t quite recall if I have on my blog. Some of you may know that I can speak Japanese, to a level where I mostly don’t need subtitles (unless there is a vocab I don’t know which I then have to look up). Now translating for a fandom like BTS is: TOUGH AF. 

As you know we have solo stans, shippers, casual listeners, here only for the boys interaction, but not the music-stans, YOU NAME IT stans, so when someone provides you with a translation, for the most part they have to decide amongst 3 choice/courses of action:

Just translate the words and you can figure out implied meanings

I will translate in a way that the implied meaning is understood even if they didn’t say those words

Just translate the words, then take some time to make notes and explain what it could mean and also add already known facts with regards to the statement. 

If you ask me, choice 3 would have to be the way to go; always. BUT LET’S BE REAL. It takes hella time to translate correctly. Imagine having to explain everything, every time, when the demand for instant translations is so high, particularly in a fandom like ours, especially when there are many moments which translators feel nobody should misunderstand. 

Also, choice 1, prevents for the most part being attacked by people in the fandom, whereas choice 2 is the quickest way to getting things spectacularly wrong if you turn out to have mistakenly interpreted what you thought they meant.  All of the aforementioned, are the reasons why Choice-1-Translators are the most common. But if I may add my 2 cents, do take the time to find some Choice-3-Translators when/if you can. Obviously, not for everything, but when/if in doubt, look for multiple sources until you are sure you’ve found various reputable, different-in-nature, sources who agree on the same meaning. 

Good Choice-1-Translators are hella quick, 95% accurate and rely heavily on context. So what is the context of this Jikook-moment.

Following is the context as righteously translated by BangtanSub:

おもしろトーク is the construct which was translated as “funniest story”, which is not wrong, but like A LOT OF ANYTHING in Japanese it has nuance and other meanings. The word おもしろい (read omoshiroi) mainly means “interesting” and the second most common meaning is “funny”, as something funny is culturally considered also interesting it’s a bit complicated a concept to understand but stick with me for a sec. Anyways, the person with the most interesting/funniest answer would win the price. 

As they start answering, J-Hope begins with promoting his solo songs off the bat, which has nothing to do with his questions, hence in a way, it was kinda funny/interesting for him to answer like that LOL. And then it is JK’s turn. 

Now, this was 2 months after they had gone to Tokyo together and we know just how much they loved talking about this trip. They literally took every chance to mention it.

So when JK decided to talk about that trip, instead of an experience of them presently being in Japan, I’m sure nobody was shocked, however what I think happened then was that people gave too much importance to the “memorable” part instead of the “funny/interesting” part. I believe that JK told that story because the fact that they stayed up until 5am was truly memorable because it was truly funny/interesting to him.  

What happened in those hours that they remained awake using JM’s phone? I don’t know. But using JM’s phone seems to be something that JK does more often than not now lowkey JK doesn’t seem like someone who really uses, or cares much about his own phone.

In fact, if anything, the rest of the members seem to be the ones who were almost worried as to what JK would say. Hobi decided to just give him the gift before even allowing him to finish, JM seemed to agree with that idea, everyone seemed to be just waiting to see what would happen, almost like when JK told the “rainy day” story during BTS Festa 2020. JK seems to really like having everyone wonder what he is about to say, almost to the point where they are borderline anxious; he really liked likes that.

SO TO ANSWER YOU/ANON: JK didn’t say he was watching JM until 5AM though he might have, who knows right?. They were on JM’s phone until 5AM, doing what? If they don’t tell us; we will never know, but also I really don’t think JK would have shared something personal between the two of them if JM wasn’t okay with it but that’s just me. So basically, I really don’t think this was a big moment for Jikook. Interesting/funny? Sure. Moving On!

“BON VOYAGE 2 (BV2)” 

The live Anon is referring to is BTS’ reaction and commentary to their first episode of Bon Voyage Season 2.

These 2 lives both used to be on vlive. However, as we all should know, vlive and weverse have now merged, AND UNFORTUNATELY FOR US, these two particular lives seem to have been lost in the interweb as I couldn’t find them on weverse might try and look better later, BUT, you know me OC.OG. (Original Content OG), wasn’t going to pull up to this ASK reason why I ended up only answering to 1 ASK … without finding a way to make everyone participate in the same discourse, so I didn't stop until I found links to both cause;

BACK TO THE QUESTION! Just like the previously discussed “Jikook in Tokyo” Jikookers, who MOST LIKELY were not around when this happened, saw the following cut out clip and started thinking that perhaps JK was alluding to the things that he and JM went through BV2, and proceeded to make this a significant moment because of the way JM looked at JK when he was trying to explain the difference between Season 1 and Season 2.

Don’t get me wrong. I do think that the way JM looks at JK in this situation is actually endearing and unique to them, and I’ll explain why. If you watched the commentary video, quite clearly, JK HAD NO CLUE WHAT THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SEASON 1 AND SEASON 2 WAS, at least with regards to them as a band, which was what that live was about “BTS reacting to Bon Voyage Season 2”. 

And the members knew that he didn’t, which is why they proceeded to start teasing him, saying that perhaps Namjoon should help him, but JK is a SORE LOSER; we all know that. He likes to win, no matter what, so he was going to say something, regardless of whether or not it was going to make sense or be impressive, and I think JM knew that and I think that THAT was the reason why JM was looking at JK in that way; he was waiting to see what this boi was going to come up with, and while doing that, his expression betrayed him for a couple of seconds, revealing that, even just that part of JK, was so cute, and like, “Why is he so cute even with stuff like this?!...” kinda way. 

SO TO ANSWER YOU/ANON: JM wasn’t staring at JK in that way because he thought about the fact that, for example, they didn’t show them in their room, or that perhaps they might have been playing footsie, ETC, which CORRECT ME IF I AM WRONG, you seem to be implying? 

This may come as a shocker but I honestly don’t believe that Jikook is out there trying to out themselves. I think they are conscious of the situation they are in, be it a homophobic country, members' safety, or global repercussions. They know that, and they live with it the best they can. Believe it or not, they are very careful, until they are not; for a second or two in front of the camera, or longer off-camera AKA fuck up slightly. We still don’t know completely the type of humans they are, but whoever they are and whatever they choose to be for each other, once again; THEY ARE DOING THE BEST THEY CAN TO LOVE, LIVE & SURVIVE.

regarding your tags on that one post, can you elaborate a bit further on why you think kinky boots was his downfall?

okay so BEAR IN MIND a couple things here: i'm just speculating, i dont know the guy. i was watching bandom pretty closely around the 2016/2017 time so i was watching a lot of this happen in real time but i'm still compiling documentation of like...everything going on there. also, this is my opinion and my own outlook. you are free to disagree!

there's a lot of discussion over the cutoff point of when panic at the disco stopped being "good". for some, they peaked at their first album and everything else is garbage. for others, the cutoff is when the band split - so after pretty. odd. still others will say vices is acceptable, too weird is pretty good, etc. death of a bachelor is the most contentious in these discussions, because this, for many, was the tipping point or juuuuust close enough to it. this was the first album that was essentially a brendon urie solo record, but still marketed as panic at the disco. and a lot of people will grudgingly concede that it's all right, like, it's fine. it still has some bangers. it's listenable. it's like the beginning of the end for some.

(death of a bachelor had the benefit of having way fewer writers than later installments like pray for the wicked, and also was done in collaboration with other artists like lolo, so that might have something to do with it. the personnel for the singles are pretty stacked, but that's about it. contrast that with the almost fifty writers and producers pray for the wicked had.)

brendon still had a lot of public good will at this point. yes he had detractors (salty ryan ross stans were a mainstay from pretty odd era onward, and they never really went away), but things hadn't yet gotten so dire for him as they are now.

so remember, this was late 2016/early 2017. you know what was MASSIVE at the time? hamilton. extremely online broadway fandom was BOOMING and then in the height of this, brendon urie gets cast for a ten week stint on broadway, playing charlie price in kinky boots. and this was the TALK OF THE TOWN. everyone was ALL over this. this was the big narrative being spun in most circles. brendon urie is SO talented. brendon urie can do ANYTHING. he can sing in a band. he can act on stage. he can fill a theater!

and again...i can only guess here. but brendon reported that he intended to take a sabbatical after kinky boots, only to abruptly dive headfirst into work on pray for the wicked. his time on broadway had a very notable influence on the album, and critics noticed. theatricality! high energy! etcetera!

and here is where the narrative changes. panic at the disco is the band. brendon urie is the ultra-talented showman who can fill arenas and broadway theaters alike. people came to see HIM, not the band!

panic always kind of had a little bit of a habit of revising history whenever it got too inconvenient. some of it i can understand - we're still the same band, don't worry. we have a new bassist, but things haven't changed that much. it's okay. we split down the middle and only two of us are left, but it's just us, and it always has been. that's all right. but i can't help but wonder if kinky boots was the point that marked that shift toward this narrative in particular. the legacy of panic at the disco can be upheld by just one guy, because he's that talented a guy, right? he's always been the guy now.

so again, i don't know the guy. i don't know anything other than what i observed in fandom at the time this was all happening. but i feel like there's a very real possibility that kinky boots took brendon to the point where he VASTLY overestimated just how far his own name and presence could take him. like the narrative he took away was not "oh wow i hit a really rad intersection of two really big interests at a really good time" but rather "oh wow i'm so cool and everyone loves me!"

kinky boots was a really short moment in time! it was ten weeks in 2017! but he's really channeled that into everything that's come after, like he needs to remind everyone constantly that he was on broadway. he's such a superstar, because of that, right? he's such a force of personality! he is magnetic and untouchable! completely ignorant, or perhaps simply unwilling, to acknowledge that this just happened to be a really opportune moment in time. and yet he took the exact wrong lesson from all of it.

throughout my journey on growing as a person somehow the only thing i still havent managed to resolve or find the deepest true cause for is my insecurity regarding my intelligence. every single evidence from outside authorities is screaming in praise and approval of my level of knowledge yet i am filled with such anxiety. i dont know how to not let my high standards lower my self-confidence. i think its good that i do have high standards too in a way but not the anxious perfectionism that comes with it. ive thought maybe im unsure about my competence because i feel like i dont belong. in university since ive had an unconventional route, i sort of lack like a group of coursemates (ive changed universities and now im in like an exchange programme so i havent had and dont have the same curriculum as anyone). so i dont know what i should know and what i shouldnt. like what prior knowledge others have. i dont know where i place in the context. i dont know what is stupid to bring up and what isnt. google also told me that maybe its like the dunning-kruger effect where the more you know the more you become painfully aware of how little you know. i guess thats true. i also in general am like programmed to seek for irregularities (i study philosophy and have a background of doing a lot of things requiring close analysis and pattern recognition) so maybe thats why i only see whats wrong in my work or opinions even if that actually forms a small portion regarding the whole. usually my professors dont even pick up on those things i think are massive logical fallacies and am afraid will fail. i literally only get praise and they are so so so credible too, its not that i get approval from people who dont know any better. i dont know. i have all these explanations in my head but not one of those hits the nail on the head. ive gathered that what relieves my anxiety regarding.. well anything.. is just acknowledgeing it. like cracking the code as to whats the underlying deeper cause that projects itself in this belief, insecurity. but i cant seem to ever get it. i wonder is this too small of a problem to go to a psychologist. right now its not too bad but i actually get like weird intense uncontrollable nervous anxiety twitches and breakdowns from the pure thought of how little i know and what others think of me. im most afraid that they think that i think im smart when in reality im so painfully aware that im speaking on matters i feel i dont have proper knowledge of (yet i must because its an assignment). though i think its pretty apparent that im insecure, at least during presentations or speaking in seminars because of the way i speak (hesitantly). i know that to wait until i truly know sth before i speak is a lost cause. you cant ever fully know anything. and its like. so what if im wrong. nothing happens if im wrong but im so terrified of it. i guess ive tied my intelligence to my identity quite a bit but i dont know if that is it either. i guess you could say i should care less abt what other ppl think but in other areas im so confident and sure of myself i dont know why this is manifest only here. i know im actually quite capable at least compared to some people and there are periods where i do get my feedback on an essay or task and i feel really sure of myself but its a very very small slice of the time. i know comparison isnt proper but its also so necessary and inevitable in my field of study, i cant seem to avoid it. ive genuinely resorted to paying a lot of attention to my looks and makeup that makes me look cute and kind in order to hopefully cause the halo effect that when im silent or say something stupid i get the benefit of the doubt.......... its stupid. but im that afraid :/ of coming across narrow-minded.
