Everyone Hates Poetry 2024
Rules
Write a poem before Feb.5th and submit it to me with the submit feature or in an ask.
Poems should be less than 500 words
You can use your real name or your blog name but they can't be completely anonymous.
Poems will be published at 9pm on Wednesdays and then a link to each poem will be added to the bottom of this pinned post so people can read them all.
I can't stop anyone from reblogging their own poems and generally sharing art is a wonderful thing, but don't turn it into some kind of social media campaign. because people with a small number of followers would be at a disadvantage. This is supposed to be fun. Please do reblog this post and tag people if you think you know someone on tumblr that might be interested. Since the post will contain links to the submissions, your poem will not be lost in the shuffle.
If I receive less than 10 entries I'll cancel the contest and consider it a failed experiment.
Public voting will begin after the 5th.and account for 50% of the vote
A panel of judges will also vote but will not submit poems themselves, and their votes will make up the other 50% of the final tally.
.There will be small prizes for the winner and runner up.
This is my art blog and will remain so, as it always has been. I'm doing this because poets here don't get much chance to get their stuff read and I have a fair number of followers. It's just a little thing to do if you want. I'm not turning this into a poetry blog or a contest blog or anything else.
Poems don't need to be finished. Due to the one month time frame I would suspect these would be first drafts, but please write something new. I want to encourage people to do something now, however imperfect, rather than showing work that's already done.
Updates will follow. Thank you!
Rule clarifications
-Please dont send poems anonymously if at all possible. I am happy to include a name that doesn't identify your blog directly but it's impossible to refer to or contact people who submit poems anonymously. I can't have anonymous poems considered without at least a name for you and if you were to win a prize, you'd need a name and address to claim it. I don't so much care about the latter part, that's for you, this becomes very disorganized and hard to regulate with anonymous messages floating in.
-Please put the title of your poem above it. If it is below it, I have no way of distinguishing with certainty if it's a title or a last line.
One poem per person please.
if you do not wish to see the poetry contest entries just filter the tag "everyone hates poetry 2024"
Due to the very high volume of submissions I am blogging them more gradually as to give more attention to each one. The same tag, "everyone hates poetry 2024", that you can filter if you do not want to see these can be used to find the submissions. If you follow this tag you'll get them all.
Please note that I am now publishing these as asks, previously I had to retype to keep the formatting and there are simply too many entries
Submissions are now closed, I will be publishing submissions all week and then when all have been posted we will start the voting (stay tuned as to how and when)

lipstick stain
a/n: short little drabble for u cuties
warnings:none
pairing: wednesday addams x fem!reader
summary: in which u leave ur lipstick stain on her bottle.
word count: 500+
Tumblr media
You're in history class, your teacher is out of the classroom saying 'it was an emergency' but when others gave that excuse she wouldn't let them go. Your leg bouncing up and down you can feel your mouth begin to dry up; you left your water bottle at home. You don’t know why or how your like this. On Monday it was your school ID, Tuesday it was your glasses, Wednesday it was your binder, and now it’s your water bottle.
“I really think I’m gonna die of thirst.” You say to your friend, as the teacher walks back in to the classroom.
You raise your hand, whilst the teacher ignores you.
“Yes, Ms. L/n.”
“Can I go get a drink of water?”
“No you guys are gonna leave soon.”
You looked at the clock.
5 minutes left. I can survive this, you thought to yourself.
Turns out, 5 minutes felt like an eternity. You rested your head as the pain grew more and more, you looked at the clock once more til it showed 12:59. Quickly people around you gathered their things shoving them into their backpacks. You grabbed your stuff, the bell rang, you just decided to hold onto your stuff. Getting up from your seat, clinging your bag to your shoulder, side by side with your friend.
“Hey, You’ll be fine I’m sure your next teacher will let you get water.”
“I have Wednesday next period, I can get some of her water.”
You didn’t know it yet, but surely your other friend did, you definitely felt someone more than friends toward Wednesday.
“Hey, can I borrow your mirror really quick?” You ask you friend, taking a darkish red lipstick from your bag. She hands the mirror to you, with a big goofy grin on her face.
“Why are you laughing..” You ask with a smile and a confused face all together. You open the mirror looking through it, before touching up the red in your lips.
“Isn’t it obvious?” She tells you. You shake your head, handing her mirror back, walking off before she can say anything else.
You hide behind the door, fixing your hair. As you go inside, you see Wednesday seated in the middle right side. You go over to her, playing your bag down, swiftly taking a seat before anyone else could.
“Hi, Wednesday.” You smile at her, the presence of her just making you warm, which normally to others is humanly, physically impossible due to her cold personality. But you always saw more to her than that.
“Hello.” She said with a monotone voice.
“You think I can get some water?”
“Did you forget your water bottle,” Wednesday turns her gaze at you, your face softening up with her black filled siren eyes. You nodded slowly, “Not surprised, L/n.” She grabbed her water from her bag, sliding it over to you. You internally smiled, grabbing it from the desk opening it.
You took a sip, your shoulders fall in relief, your mouth no longer dry anymore, everything just filled with relief. You close the lid, "Let me get some." Wednesday tells you. You take the top off, sliding it over to her. Wednesday goes to drink it, before seeing what was on the side. Wednesday turned a bright pink, her body radiating with heat.
Your lipstick stain was left.

congrats on 500 followers 🫶🏻 can I get #40 and Kageyama? they’re meant for one another
ur so right for this one it's so aggressively kageyama
500 followers special: #40: "Have I entered an alternate universe or did you really just crack a smile for me?"
kageyama x gn reader, university au, tutoring, jock x nerd dynamic kinda if u squint, fluff, not proofread
written content masterlist
Tumblr media
Tutoring is a job. It's a job that pays money. Albeit, pretty shit money, but money nonetheless. So they are going to smile and correct the essays and offer advice and they are not going sit there and pout over how much their student absolutely fucking hates them.
There's not a doubt in their mind that Kageyama would not be here if he didn't have to be. He does not care about his grades. He does not care about the material he writes about or even what he's writing (that much is clear from his essays; they have no point of view and are random regurgitations from text books sloppily thrown together to meet the word count).
It's very obvious to them that Kageyama is there to meet the minimum grade point average required in order for him to stay on the university's volleyball team.
So every Wednesday he ends up in the library with them, watching as they completely massacre his first drafts.
Their red pen draws a lazy circle around his third paragraph. "See, this portion here is in complete contradiction to the point you made earlier."
Kageyama, as he usually does, offers a slight grunt in response, his eyes narrowed at the essay before him, as if it's some sort of challenge for him to conquer.
He's not the best with words. On the page or out loud.
"And in this paragraph here, you're just summarizing again," they explain, red pen making a mess of the paper. "There's no sense of organization, and the way you start to deviate from the argument you laid out in the opening paragraph is gonna make your professor think you don't understand the text."
"I don't understand the text," Kageyama says, matter-of-factly, but there is a twist in his mouth and a slight dusting of pink in his cheeks.
They stop, and blink up at him. Their pen drops, and they lean back in their chair. "Okay, well when you're reading, what are you thinking about?"
Kageyama takes a moment to think. It's one of the things about him they appreciate-he thinks about every question posed to him. He doesn't ever say anything just for the sake of it, or because he thinks it's what he should say.
They appreciate that, among other things. Like the veins in his forearms and the size of his hands and the shade of blue in his eyes when he focuses.
Those things, they really, really appreciate.
"Usually, I'm not thinking about what I'm reading," Kageyama eventually replies, snapping them out of it. "I'm usually thinking about practice."
He's such a jock, they think to themselves, and try not to think of what exactly that makes them.
"Well, that's the main problem then, you're trying to dissect something you're not actively engaging in," they tell him, pushing the paper back towards him. Their hour's almost up. "I'd go back and try to reread more actively."
Kageyama frowns, and if he wasn't constantly frowning and sighing and grunting around him, they would think it's cute. "Okay, I'll try."
They give him a nod. "Text me if you need help going over the text next time instead of reviewing a new draft. Not due for another two weeks, right?" Kageyama gives them a nod in confirmation. "Right, so we'll have time. And try not to stress, okay? Your essays are getting better than when we started these sessions."
He freezes in place. If his cheeks were pink before, they're bright red now. "They are?"
A small smile forms on their face. "Yeah. I can tell you're getting more confident with your writing."
Kageyama's eyes are wide for a second, and then they find his hands, which are knotted together on the table in front of him. "Yeah, well, you're a really good tutor. You make it easier to understand everything."
Now, they can't contain the grin that spreads. The praise is one thing, but the way he's blushing and flustered in front of them is an entire other thing. "Really? This whole time I thought you hated me."
"I don't hate you," Kageyama counters quickly and quietly. "You're just a lot smarter than me. It's intimidating."
They pause. "I don't think I'm smarter than you," they muse, leaning back in their chair, and Kageyama's eyes flash up to them. "There are tons of different ways to be intelligent. Just because I can write essays doesn't mean I'm a genius. And isn't that what I've heard about you? You're some sort of genius volleyball player?"
Kageyama still won't look up at them, but the corner of his lips tug up into a slight, barely-there smile. "Yeah, I guess so."
They don't focus on his words, though. They lean forward over the table and try to get a better look. "Holy shit," they almost gape. "Have I entered an alternate universe, or did you really just crack a smile for me?"
It doesn't drop. They half-expected it to. But instead, his smile remains, and Kageyama looks up at them, still blushing and hands still pressed together. "I am capable of it, you know."
It's cute, his smile. Unsure and nervous, like the way he can be, sometimes. "I'd like to see it more," they admit to him.
"You could come see, sometime. Me play. Volleyball, I mean. See if I'm a genius after all," he offers, only stumbling over his words a bit. "That'd make me smile."
Now it's their face that heats up. "Yeah, I'd like that."
Kageyama nods, and then stands to gather his things, swiping his marked up essay off the table between them. "I'll text you," he says, still grinning as he turns on his heel, leaving them to try and cool off their cheeks before the next student arrives.

Storm Hawks Bird OC Challenge - January 2024
Happy belated new year everyone! The holidays kicked my ass work-wise, so this prompt is a little late, but I'm pleased to announce this month's bird! The Southern Silvery Kingfisher (Ceyx argentatus).
Tumblr media
Sadly, this bird is near threatened due to habitat loss in the Phillipines. It's commonly found in lowland forests, streams and rivers in Mindanao and Basilan, and is differentiated from its northern counterpart by its bluish-white markings versus the more cream-coloured marks of the northern silvery kingfisher.
The deadline this month is Wednesday the 31st of January. As always, rules are below the cut.
Minimum requirements for drawn entries to be put in the winner’s vote are a name, occupation, the character’s home/birth Terra and at least one paragraph (or about 100 words) of written backstory.
Minimum requirements for written (i.e. written dossiers without art, or mini-fics for the character) are 500 words including backstory and appearance. Feel free to make a mini-fic out of this challenge, I’ll make sure to link it with the final collage as well.
You’re not expected to create a character from scratch for this challenge. If you’ve got an older character concept that’s been collecting dust or that you’d like to take the opportunity to revamp, feel free! The goal of this challenge is to inspire people.
Collaborations are allowed! Same rules apply, the only addition is that you and your partner(s) just need to make note of who was responsible for what part of the character.
Make sure to tag me in your entries and also DM me with a link to your entry. Tumblr is not always reliable about notifications for this sort of thing, and I don’t want to risk missing anyone’s entries, so better safe than sorry.
The group collage of entries, and the (possible) winner’s vote are opt-in. Participation of those parts of this challenge are not mandatory.

WIP Wednesday
For this WIP Wednesday I present a bit from whatever 'Frigga Mindwipes Everyone' ends up being called. I dunno when/if this will ever be finished as there's other stuff I want to finish first but I added about 500 words to it yesterday and thus it is fresh in my mind as a thing that I am writing. It might finish itself sooner than expected, who knows.
My main concern is I find it a bit twee due to the amount of it that features small children. Which is unavoidable for a story where Frigga Mindwipes Everyone for the sake for her small children but I'm still ambivalent about it meself.
Anyway here is ~200 words of what I have so far, featuring Frigga doing her best and bb!Loki asking awkward questions. LMK if the twee is overwhelming or whatever.
Her sons are huddled together in bed, half hidden under blankets to keep the winter outside from touching their delicate skin. There are more blankets stored in a wooden trunk at the foot of the bed and there is plenty of wood by the fireplace, and so her precious boys are safe, at least for tonight.
She sits by the bed and talks to them in a gentle voice, telling the same stories she heard from her own mother so very long ago.
A few of these she is careful to edit, but children are always so curious about absolutely everything and so she is forced to add some of the dangerous details back in again to satisfy them.
“What do Frost Giants do that’s so bad?” asks little Loki, inevitably.
Frigga thinks for a moment before she answers. She’s the only person in this room who knows the truth, and she also knows that one day this night is going to haunt her, one way or another.
She smooths Loki’s hair against his head with a warm hand and tells him, “They steal children from their parents.”

Week 3 Update
Tumblr media
As we start into the final full week of NaNo, there’s still a lot going on, not least of which is the inevitable week 3 slump.
It happens to all of us – your plot doesn’t seem to be going anywhere, it’s a slog to get through scenes, 1667 words seems like more and more every day, and you’ve just about decided to pack in writing in favour of something easier like herding goats.
You’re not alone, as you can easily see by how quiet places like the discord have been the past few days – this is absolutely not a complaint, just a note that there’s a lot of folks in the same boat. Unfortunately, figuring out what works best for getting yourself out of a slump really is a matter of trial and error, because what works for one person might not work for anyone else.
It can be even harder to motivate yourself when you’re behind where the official word count says you should be.
And at this stage I’ll say that quitting is a perfectly valid option if that’s what you feel will be best for you! We’re never going to tell you to just suck it up and get on with writing if it’s truly making you miserable – there are more important things in life than hitting 50k words in one month, and your mental health is definitely one of those things!
However, if you’re not too far behind then there’s still plenty of time to catch up, and no matter how far behind you are there’s always the option of setting a lower goal for the rest of the month. Life gets very busy at this time of year, and if you can’t fit in 1667 words every day, try 500, or 250. The only person you’re competing against here is yourself, which means that you get to decide how hard you want to make that competition! The NaNo Yorkshire region will be there to cheer you on no matter what.
Then again, if you really do want to quit and spend the month doing something more productive (like learning how to raise goats), then we’ll be here to cheer you on with that too!
There will be zoom write-ins every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday between now and the end of the month, as well as in person write-ins at various locations listed on the events page and calendars (both linked at the end of this mail), which do help a lot of folks stick to their chosen writing targets and get back on track when they’ve had a bad few days.
This is also a good time to remind you to BACK UP YOUR PROJECTS, tech issues can happen to anyone, and it’s never a nice feeling to realise you’ve lost work.
External hard drives and pen drives are pretty reasonably priced these days and are portable enough to carry around with you. There are also many different cloud storage options out there that “just” require an internet connection to back up your work.
There’s a list of cloud backup services on our discord server (linked below), though please make sure that they’ve finished syncing your work before you close down your computer if you’re planning to work from different locations, otherwise you end up with multiple files and a lot of confusion (we’ve all been there and learned that the hard way and just want to stop you from making the same mistakes as us!)
Forum Update
There has also been a lot going on the past week or so with wider issues relating to NaNo, particularly the forums. As most of you are probably now aware, the NaNo forums have been temporarily closed – you can still read through them, but posting has been locked down for now outside of certain threads.
The closure of the forums is predominantly due to complaints relating to moderation, which led to a decision that it was safer to close the forums temporarily rather than let them continue with inconsistent moderation guidelines and practices in place.
There are various updates from the board (the most recent of which I’ve linked below as it’s more of a summary post), and we’re keeping folks posted on the updates as we’re made aware of them via our discord server. At the moment, there are a lot of (understandably) high emotions flying around as well as a fair amount of misinformation and speculation, so please be aware of that if you head down into the threads to read through the discussions going on there.
The board is still in the process of considering the large amount of information that has been provided to them, so there will be a pause before they issue any recommendations on what the next steps should be. We will not be speculating on what those steps might include so as to avoid the spread of misinformation, however, as and when we have more information, we’ll pass it on via discord or NaNo mail.
We have taken a joint decision, however, that as they’re mostly unused these days, and because we cannot moderate them in the way they need to be moderated given our current availability and levels of training, that the NaNo Yorkshire forums will be remaining closed for now.
If you have any issues or concerns, especially about what’s going on with the forums, both your MLs can be contacted via private message on the NaNo site or via our discord server. Additionally, on discord, you can contact the server mods as well as the MLs with any issues, and there is a list of active mods posted in the announcements channel.

November 5, 2022
Hello world. You can call me Amira.
I am sorta of the person that feels better the more they vent about stuff, even if nobody is reading, so consider this my personal vent blog thingy.
I guess a little introduction is in order, not that I think anyone is actually reading this but still. As aforementioned, name is Amira. I am just your average Arab girl living in a place with a crashing economy, practically and mostly no future, and no desire to actually leave this place I call home because I am a romantic fool. I am an aspiring filmmaker/screenwriter, I hope to one day be involved in the industry just as many members of my family were in one shape or another. I just love movies you know, for just two hours I get lost in this world that has been created to immerse and entertain. To watch the finest expression of artistic quality on the silver screen. The pure passion that radiates from most films, that you can tell a director, an actor, a screenwriter, has put hours upon hours upon hours of effort in. Anyways, this brings me to my latest issue and the first one of this blog thingy. For the past month or so I have been practically unable to watch movies, I don't know why but I have just been unable to sit down and immerse myself and watch just any movie. It does coincide with what I consider my lowest point mentally (so far), and my lack of free time. I just feel bad you know, I love this medium so being unable to just partake in it makes me feel sick inside.
Other than that, I have lately been overwhelmed by school work and exams, I have about 3 to 4 projects that were due the past Wednesday and I haven't turned them in yet so that's fun.
Positively at least I have been achieving my creative writing goals of 500 words a day so that's nice. And I cooked some really nice fried chicken using a myriad of spices (paprika, chili powder, garlic, and a bunch of other stuff).
I dunno how to end this so uhhhh i guess the last interesting thing to happen this week is that somebody called me and I quote 'quite smart for a Muslim woman' so yaay?

It’s a secret exchange, so creators will be anonymous until the creator reveal on May 5th.
Timeline
Prompt submissions open: Monday, March 7th Prompt submissions close: Friday, March 25th Submission deadline: Monday, April 25th Pinch-hit period: Tuesday, April 26th-Tuesday, May 3rd Works revealed: Wednesday, May 4th Creators revealed: Thursday, May 5th
Prompts may be claimed at any time. The mods will do their best to see that each prompt is claimed, but please be aware that there is a small chance your prompt will not be filled.
Signup Form
From March 7th - March 25th, you will be able to access the signup form here.

1. Posting prompts: the sign up form can be found here. Only 1 prompt request is allowed per person, and anonymous prompts are not accepted.

6. Minimum requirements for the event are at least 500 words for fic (complete) and a clean sketch on unlined paper (or digital art equivalent) for art
7. Please only claim one prompt at a time. After you have completed your fill, you may claim a new one.
8. Respect your prompter’s dislikes and rating preferences
9. Please don’t publicly discuss or crosspost your work until after the creator reveal on May 5th, so it can remain a secret gift
10. You can post your prompt fill by navigating to the ‘Claims’ section of your AO3 dashboard and selecting ‘Fulfill’ on your claimed prompt
11. If you cannot finish your gift, please drop your claim as soon as possible. You can do so by navigating to the Claims’ section of your AO3 dashboard and selecting ‘Drop Claim’ on the prompt. If your work is not posted by the December 17th deadline and we have not heard from you, your claimed prompt will be added to the pinch hit list.
12. If you need to drop out, that’s okay. We get that things happen. You are welcome to sign up for another event with us, but if you need to default a second time in the future, we do ask that you send us a brief explanation. You don’t need to provide much detail. We have had issues with a participant signing up and then quickly defaulting on multiple exchanges. While we like to give the benefit of the doubt, we do need to keep things fair for all participants. Thanks for understanding!
If you have any questions, please contact us via email ([email protected]) or here on Tumblr.

Darkness : Poe Dameron x Reader
Pairing: Poe Dameron x Reader
Words: 1.4k
Excerpt: “Darkness is a time of peace for you. A time to crawl into soft sheets, to curl up against your pilot. Some nights, to feel him lazily press a soft kiss to your forehead before his breath levels out in sleep. Others, to feel his hands roaming your body, feel him inside you.”
Summary: A short talk to Poe is always enough to cure a case of loneliness.
Warnings: Some sexual references
A/N: This is for @autumnleaves1991-blog Writer Wednesday. I actually originally meant for this to be a perhaps 500 word-ish Drabble but it ended up way longer obviously. But I’m really proud of it and love the concept of Writer Wednesday, so hope you guys enjoy! (Also, we’re just gonna pretend that phones and phone booths exist in the Star Wars universe...).
Tumblr media
You’ve always found something lovely in darkness.
It’s simple, quiet, a constant that never changes, that rolls around at roughly the same time each night. Settles over cities and towns and every being in the galaxy in a thin blanket. Darkens faces into comforting anonymity, conceals the activities of lovers, provides peace in slumber for the weary.
There is a saying: One should not be afraid of the dark, but of what lies in it.
And after years of life, years of travel, years of experiencing the galaxy, you know that nothing sinister hides beneath darkness. No monsters, no demons, no ghosts. It is something that simply exists with no ulterior motive, something that is debatably hard to come by these days.
Darkness is a time of peace for you. A time to crawl into soft sheets, to curl up against your pilot. Some nights, to feel him lazily press a soft kiss to your forehead before his breath levels out in sleep. Others, to feel his hands roaming your body, feel him inside you.
In those times, darkness is there, still a constant. Hiding his features, hiding those eyes you adore during the daytime, allowing you to become entirely tactile, to simply feel him to the fullest, void of the distraction one’s most used method of perception, sight,  provides.
Yet tonight is a rare night. Your feet hit pavement as you walk quickly, hands in your coat, head bent towards the ground. You’ve been on this Outer Rim planet for nearly two months, gathering intelligence undercover, maintaining little to no contact with the Resistance, and therefore, Poe.
The darkness seems stronger than ever tonight. It slithers up and down the sides of buildings, seems to wrap around you in strings. In this moment, it is not simply a cover—it is suffocating.
The loneliness had been getting to you. Too many days going by a name that is not your own, too many days living in constant fear, too many days away from the touch of someone that’s always able to take your mind off of everything.
And that’s exactly what you need right now. A distraction. A brief moment to bind you back to everything you know, something you are slowly, imperceptibly slipping away from in your mind. The buildings seem to tower over you, to dwarf you. It’s an intimidation act, and you feel it’s working.
It feels as if you can sink into the asphalt, become one with the soil that had been so cruelly compressed by man-made rock. As if you can sink beneath and become one with the dead, the figurative and the literal that had most likely been so barbarously worked to death to build this historic city in the dark days of the galaxy.
You round a bend, turning onto the main street, and your eyes, adjusted to the dark, flare painfully as light hits you. You snap them shut on instinct, flinching. However, the object of your discomfort is not an unknown. This route had been walked by you every day the last two months, and the light is the same phone booth you’d been using to transmit information back to the Resistance due to the anonymous, unmonitored, and therefore, rare quality of it.
It is hardly used anymore, for everyone has their own personal holos, and this one is particularly beat up. It’s translucent walls are cloudy, it’s metal backing dented. Nowadays, it is probable that is it only frequented by drunks and Spice addicts and, well…you.
There is something ironic about the fact that this small, dilapidated booth is your only connection back to D’Qar.
But not ironically, perhaps in a poetically symbolic manner, it also shines bright in the darkness, eradicates the very thing that had been suffocating you moments earlier. It is almost a physical embodiment of hope.
It is also a universal rule that hope births more hope, and an unwise desire comes over you. One that could put the whole operation at risk. But resisting the temptation, it hurts. It’s agonizing, and you want to give in to it. You want to hear one voice. One voice that can wrap you in softness, encourage your imagination to conjure up the sensation of his touch.
And before you know it, you’re in the booth, dialing a long string of numbers you’ve memorized by now. A voice of a communications officer sounds.
You state your name.
“Security code?” the officer asks.
“Six nine eight oh seven three.”
Your eyes nervously glance around. Despite having done this a few times, the experience still makes your heart race. You can only hope that any observer would see only an ordinary lone figure, silhouetted in the light, making an emergency call to a friend because she drank too much or got her wallet stolen.
“You got information?”
“No,” you respond, letting out a soft breath and lying through your teeth. “I need you to transfer me to Commander Dameron. I have a hunch regarding something naval, and I need his opinion.”
You silently chide yourself at your quickness to over explain.
But luckily, the communication officer says nothing. “Transferring now,” he says.
You thank him, leaning against the inner wall of the booth, hovering the phone directly next to your ear. Moments of silence pass before a voice breaks it.
“Hello?” says Poe.
Every point of tension in you seemed to relax in a moment as your eyes slowly close. The timbre of his voice washes over you, through you. “Hey,” you whisper.
“Sweetheart?” He sounds confused. Above all, tired.
“Did I wake you?” you ask, feeling bad all of a sudden. The high that had been coursing through your veins moments earlier plunges back to the ground. The intensity with which you feel it is irrational, yet nothing in you mind is steady.
“Yeah, but that’s okay,” he replies, a slight urgency to his voice. “Is something wrong?”
You picture him in your shared bed back on D’Qar, shirt off like usual. Propped up on one elbow, sheets falling to his waist, holo to his ear, concern on his features. Concern at his love calling him in the middle of the night, her voice shaking.
“Nothing’s wrong…I just…I….” Your voice trails off, and a silence a bit too long elapses.
“Baby?” he asks.
Your breath trembles slightly as you let it out. “This was a mistake,” you mumble. “I’m sorry, just—“
He interjects at the tone of finality in your voice. “Hey…don’t go, sweetheart.” You hear him shift, perhaps sitting up. “Just talk to me. What’s wrong?”
“I miss you,” you blurt out. You’d meant to say it more eloquently, less directly, but that’s not something you have the energy for right now. “I miss everyone back on D’Qar. This assignment…it’s the most least contact with base I’ve ever had, and—why am I even telling you that? You know that.” You let out a frustrated breath, gathering your thoughts. He patiently waits, something you’re grateful for. “I’m just…having a hard time. That’s all.”
His energy transmits well through the phone. He’s thinking, the gears in his mind turning. You can feel the helplessness, for there is undeniably little he can do. “I miss you, too,” he finally says. “It’s a few more weeks, baby. I know you’ve got it in you…”
It’s a simple sentence, yet nearly reinvigorating in a way. Nothing that immediately lifts your mood, but perhaps something that briefly abates the hollow feeling within you.
“I’ll be there the moment you’re back.” His tone is soft, a little raspy with tiredness, slightly reminiscent of the way he tells you how much he loves and how amazing you are in a post-sex haze of exhaustion. It’s an odd relation, but the sense of peace that both tones hold is something you always cling to. “I’ll be there to kiss you. To hold you.” He pauses. “To take you to bed….”
The way his voice, on the last statement, walks the line between humorous and genuinely seductive makes you laugh quietly. It’s neither a common nor desirable combination.
“There’s that beautiful laugh,” he says softly, letting out a breath, returning to his previous demeanor. “I’ll be there, baby. I know you know that.”
You nod even though he can’t see you. Air brushes past your lips as your eyes flutter shut. “I know.”
