POV the foxes have a sourdough starter that they share together and it’s quite literally alive.

-It bubbles and gurgles when it’s not fed and more then once it has spilled over board and taken up accommodation in fox tower as a new living life form. Abby gave it to them the year after Baltimore because she thought that it would be like those sort of flour baby social experiments, that would give them more responsibility and bring the team closer together. But now it’s genuinely become like a mascot to the foxes, they all adore it with their whole hearts. They even have a rotating schedule where they all have to participate to keep the sourdough alive, it’s like a beloved team pet (although ofc wymack can’t understand the hype, but ‘as long as it makes them happy and no one’s trying to stab anyone’)

-Every month a ‘chosen one’ is randomly chosen from a hat, and that person has to try to make a better sourdough than the one made the month before. After they’ve spent hours slaving away in their dingy college kitchen, everyone gets to try a slice so that they can judge it. They keep a score up on their bulletin board of who makes the best one, (Number 1 is Andrew, and Aaron is so jealous because he’s number 2, so the twinyards now have a rivalry over who’s the better bread maker (hint: It’s Andrew because he’s got bigger hands))

my niche take (not for canon tho): i quite dislike the wildly popular hc that andrew has tons of piercings… it just doesn’t seem… right? it would fit his style (?) and personality for sure but i just can’t help feeling like he would never? do that? i think the same of tattoos but that bothers me a little less…

i am of the same opinion. (i would like to stress here, opinion)

my opinion stems both from personal experience and canon characterization, and it has nothing to with aesthetics. of course, of course, tiny emo beef boy would rock tattoos and piercings. he canonically wears all-black, smokes, wields knives and listens to soul asylum. of course.

however, so much of Andrew's traumas, trauma responses and PTSD are based in physicality.

first, Andrew did not own his body, it being abused and abused and abused, by people he trusted, and people he didn't. the 'trust' part didn't matter; his body was abused. he learned the lesson and kept guard of his body rigidly, tirelessly, violently (the lesson he thought there was; there is no lesson to get from child SA).

second, Andrew took back his body in ways his psyche could understand and accept. SH and hypersexuality. both instances have him in control of every inch of his body. nobody touches, only him. nobody inflicts, only him. before; during; after. Neil is the exception confirming the pattern, the rule.

third, Andrew defends his body against whoever he must. no matter family, friends, team, Neil. his body and subconscious always remember before his consciousness does. again, even if Neil helps start his journey towards healing, trust doesn't really have a say in his defense mechanism. violence it is. violence it must be.

now. say it is a professional tattoo artist or piercer: how long before Andrew trusts them enough? how long before trust doesn't matter and the itch of the past settles into his skin? what if the eyebrow piercing feels too similar to the bottle Drake broke onto his head? what if the forearm tattoos tickle his self-inflicted scars like Drake's kisses did? what if the person ticks off a no-no box of Andrew's mid-session? there are so many variables Andrew does not control, why put himself in the situation and risk his last pebble of sanity?

i think the only way Andrew would get either piercings or tattoos would be if Neil did them. hello fic writers go fucken wild with this one.

personally i'd say it would only happen quite a few years after TRK, when Andrew has matured, possibly when his pro career is over because ouch Exy brawls and piercings don't get along well, but that's just me. maybe just studs, maybe the tattoos are very minimalists and have nothing to do with Andrew's scars, idk.

i'd like to be clear on one thing though: my believing Andrew does not ever have piercings and/or tattoos has nothing to do with believing he does not heal enough to do that, or that survivors of abuse like him are broken to the point of never getting anything done to their body. to me it's like Andreil never saying 'i love you' and never getting married. Andrew, like Neil, like the Foxes, are unconventional, difficult characters whose healing journeys are not pretty nor normalized. but it doesn't mean they don't get to a healthy place, whatever that looks for them. it does not mean they are not okay, and valid in their choices. to me, it has everything to knowing yourself so thoroughly, forgiving yourself so wholly, accepting yourself so completely, that there is no need to hide your body or prove your limits, to your own self or to others. i think it would be much more significant if Andrew one day could simply remove his armbands, and never wear them again, than to cover his scars with tattoos. to allow himself softness rather than arm his presence with more piercings.

again, it's also not that serious. Andrew can have an ice cream cone tattooed on his ass for all i care. give him a dainty little nose ring he sniffs up one time and has to go to the ER to get in unstuck. it's all shits and giggles if you wanna.

Headcanon that the first time Neil laughs for more than a second, it’s because of Matt. Now I don’t know what the joke would be about but Neil would find it hilarious. He’s finds it even more hilarious that he finds it hilarious.

Now of course The Foxes have heard him laugh before, but they were small, brief things that only lasted a second or two. Of course they took whatever joy they could from them, but this one, god this one is Neil’s real laugh. Neil feels safe enough to laugh with them. Neil’s happy with them.

Matt would be both awing at Neil and laughing with him. Allison and Dan would being laughing with them, more at Neil laughing then the joke. Renee would be smiling proudly at Neil. Nicky would so be on the verge of tears. Aaron wouldn’t care. Kevin shows no interest but really he’s happy for Neil. It’s probably a good reminder for Kevin that both he and Neil are alive. That they made it out and can find happiness somewhere.

And Andrew,

Oh Andrew wouldn’t know what to do with himself. Obviously he wouldn’t react physically but mentally,

Andrew would look at Neil laughing and would have to use all his self control not to jump up and kiss him senseless cause Neil’s just so, so pretty when he laughs. No but for real killing Jean like that would be like an objectively bad writing choice. Same thing I think with the Kandreil draft where everyone thought Andreil was cheating on Kevin. There are some previous drafts things I think that are geniunely better as Nora's inside thoughts

it’s not that i disagree with you or anything but the reason i shared that snippet of her saying that in other drafts jean would have committed suicide while ON THE PHONE with KEVIN is that i think it’s deranged. it’s insane. it’s crazy enough to be funny. i’d give everything to read that draft

but on a more serious note: a world where something like that could happen is interesting to me. the way she put it didn’t even seem like jean’s choosing of kevin to witness his last moments was a punishment — instead kevin was, as simply put as possible, the person jean wanted to sit with him while he did perhaps the scariest thing he’s ever done. i think suicide as a theme in a story like aftg might feel as the author refusing to give a character the place or the time to heal, but in this specific situation, perhaps it *was* the choice that made jean feel more at peace with himself. ritualistic, almost, in how he reaches out for the only friend he’s ever had and asks him to accompany him to the other side. the sending off of an old friend, even if i can’t see kevin ever recovering from that phone call

in the end it might not be the dignified ending people would want for a character as beloved as jean. and it’s understandable! really it is. what matters to me is less that it happened in a draft far far far away, and rather what this says about jean and the fact that he thought the only way he could meaningfully show any support or love for kevin was to die. how he was willing to sacrifice himself again and again in every draft because he felt kevin’s & neil’s lives were worth more than his. i think this goes over most peoples’ heads when they consume mostly fanon, but jean was described in the books as having blind loyalty towards riko: when he’s taken to palmetto, he tries to go back TWICE before kevin sits him down and convinces him to stay. you didn’t think i was joking when i called jean a dog, did you?

Yeah.... the groomer! Thea thing is a frustrating mess. I've definitely seen talk of it reduce lately, but that might just because I keep myself tucked firmly in a safe little Kevin Day obsessed corner.

It's entirely a fanon constructed idea based of a desire to demonize Thea's character, but there's no basis for it in canon. Until Nora dropped that little tidbit about how they first started talking, we had no idea how KevThea happened, and people took that as full permission to paint the only canon black character in the books as an abuser.

It's not uncommon in real life for freshman to date seniors and those relationships are not inherently predatory just because there's a few years age difference. There is nothing to indicate that Thea and Kevin even talked before Kevin joined the Raven's as a freshman. And additionally, it doesn't even make sense for what little we know about Thea's character in the original series. She is blunt, motivated, and entirely focused on her career. Why the fuck would she be wasting her time trying to manipulate an underage Kevin into being in a relationship with her?

It's unfortunate because I think their relationship is actually quite delightful. You're 100% correct that Kevin definitely had a big fat school girl crush on her (adorable and fantastic) and thea was just like - who the hell is this kid???.

(On a slightly unrelated note) I think we as a fandom need to chill a bit on the morality policing. A lot of the dynamics in aftg are a tad unhealthy and nuisanced. Even the holly grail of andreil has a scene where Andrew drugs Neil without a thought for his well-being or consent. But like the fun part is that characters are messy and you'll never get a perfect sparkling clean puritan relationship, you know??? So why can't we do the same with KevThea????

My 2 niche aftg takes are that I love and accept Nora’s extra content, just because they don’t get married or say I love u or any of that stuff, doesn’t mean they are not healing and that they can never truly be healed without those things, it’s just that those are not important to them and that’s valid, their happy ending doesn’t have to look like everyone else’s (I also love and accept Nora’s writing, not a fan of when everyone jokingly bashes her books as if she didn’t capture all our hearts, art is meant to make you feel, and she succeeded in that a lot more than a lot of other ‘good’ writing)

Number two is that I’m not a fan of a lot of the fanon characterisation of Andrew and Neil, I know it’s par for the course in queer media that a fandom will feminise one character and masculinise the other (and make one the ‘bottom’ and one the ‘top’ respectively) , and I even expected it, obviously that’s weird in itself but that’s not even the part that bothers me that much since I knew it would happen, the part that does is that they clearly have done it the wrong way round, because like, if any one of those boys is going to wear a skirt, it’s Andrew, he’s the one that likes fashion and might decide to experiment, not Neil. If anyone is a ‘submissive’ it’s Andrew, the way he acts in the books, he literally does anything neil wants to make him happy, and if anyone gives top energy, it’s Neil josten, and I know this is silly but I guess it made the whole thing a lot more jarring for me when I went on to read fanfic and it felt even more ooc than it usually would. Anyway that’s all.

andreil stuff, i've read about here and there but not directly from the source; some me laughs, some me don't care. that's literally it. i don't give it much, if any, thought at all.

i've heard of Renee's future in the peace corps and marrying a man; me ew ew ew. she is so queer-coded it's baffling how that was achieved with Renee/Jean in mind. and the peace corps?? that toxic american white savior bullshit?? baby no. there are much better religious orgs and rep out there.

the rest is mystery to me. i'm cumulating more and more reasons to thoroughly read through the EC, but it's not like... an urge. i'll get to it when i get to it. i appreciate nora sakavic for writing it, but also for not pushing it everywhere. she doesn't mind whether one considers it canon or not. i really, really appreciate that of her. SO DO NOT COME FOR HER AND HER WRITING. aftg is GOOD. it was never badly written. it's just so out of left field that it is difficult not to be made to feel ashamed for liking the series by mainstream lit and lit. corps. honestly give me a work of literature that has had a stronger grip on its readers than aftg and that you consider being 'well-written' in comparison. i will never, ever say it's bad. because it isn't. i will not be taking any question.

as for the second part of this ask... i am uncomfortable discussing sexual fanon content, and i simply do not read that kind of stuff very often, again because it's not for me, so i won't be able to add to this. perhaps other mutuals can reach out to you on this?
