I find annoying how in shows/movies there are straight couples that share certain scenes and people are like "Awww cute", "They look so good together" and "OMG They are a perfect couple" but if two boys/two girls share the same scene or a scene that definitely shows how much they care about each other, if you ship those two boys/two girls people are like "They are just brothers/sisters", "They are very good friends", "They don't see each other romantically".

I mean, if you insist that much in two boys/two girls having a platonic relationship with those kind of scenes then you can accept that a girl and a boy also share only a friendship having the same scenes 🤷

I like Hiccstrid...but I have issues

So I watched How to Train Your Dragon about a month ago and I absolutely loved it! So much so that before I took the time to watch the other two movies, I basically know the plots for the remaining movies from all the fanfiction, Youtube videos and Tumblr posts I have read about it lol. I know I have issues when it comes to consuming media properly :). I still intend to watch the movies...I hope.

Anyway, I liked Astrid's character in HTTYD 1. She was a fully fleshed-out character and besides her opening scene, she never felt like a love interest character for the majority of the movie. She was the perfect Viking, everything Hiccup was not. She was pretty (because what love interest is not pretty **roll my eyes**) but she was angry and violent. She was perfect...until the romantic flight scene. When I watched the movie, I enjoyed the sequence and I found Astrid cute but the entire scene just felt kind of forced. And it marked the beginning of my issues with Hiccstrid, as much as I still found the couple enjoyable at the end of the film.

Astrid's bullying was not resolved properly

Astrid never bullied Hiccup the way the others like Snotlout did, but she was still complicit in Hiccup's ostracization. It's obvious she does not like him or have any fondness for him. However, at no point does she apologize or express any remorse for hurting him in the movie. She just suddenly likes him after one (amazing) flight? Hiccup just moves on from her ignoring his existence like that? No reconciliation??

Astrid's punching Hiccup is not sweet

As I have mentioned before in other posts, I find the trope of a female character expressing her love for a guy through violence to be disgusting. The only fictional couples I tolerate this are Jimmy/Cindy (Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius) and Helga/Arnold (Hey Arnold!). I don't mind Jimmy/Cindy because their fights tend to be verbal and argumentative in nature and Jimmy gives as good as he gets from Cindy. They both get a kick from riling each other up, Cindy a bit more than Jimmy. I don't know the Hey Arnold! show very well but I understand why Helga acts the way she does and Arnold is allowed to be angry when she hurts him. When she is truly being romantic and sweet with Arnold she does not hit him. She seems to mainly torment him when she is upholding her mask to hide her feelings. You can say that this is the case for Astrid too. She grew up as a Viking and Viking culture is violent. However, I hate that we are meant to see her hitting Hiccup as part of her love language. It would be fine if it were Tuffnut or Snotlout but Hiccup is not like other Vikings. He is a gentle person and he is not tough like his other counterparts. Astrid's hits hurt him and he expresses obvious pain. But Astrid gives him a follow-up kiss after each punch so it's all good? Not for me.

Hiccstrid felt kind of shallow

I think the relationship felt rushed. Astrid went from disdain to crushing way too quickly. It's like they missed a step in the relationship: friendship. The romantic flight scene should be the starting point where she reconsiders her opinion on Hiccup and maybe after a few more dragon training sessions she would appreciate Hiccup's growth. Maybe her ice queen character thaws over time as she gets to know Hiccup better in training. She laughs at his sarcastic quips. Maybe she begins to sit with him at meal times away from the others. Just small stuff to show their deepening friendship. However, Hiccstrid was not given this development because like many other action type movies the romantic relationship is given the backburner which leads to my final issue.

Hicctrid was not needed

I mentioned earlier that Astrid was not treated like a love interest until like halfway through the movie when we saw the romantic flight scene. Hiccup does not even spend time beyond the opening scene expressing attraction towards her. You can easily forget he has a crush on her. Because ultimately romance was not needed in this story. At all. When you really think about it, what did Astrid contribute to Hiccup and Toothless' story? What does Hiccup and Astrid's relationship contribute to the story? Astrid could have given the pep talk and helped rally the other teens to help Hiccup as a FRIEND, not a love interest. But of course, when the guy becomes a hero and saves the day he needs to get the girl of his dreams at the end. It would have been nice if the first movie focused on developing the Hiccstrid friendship and then developed the romance in the second movie, wrapping it up with their marriage in the third.

Anyway, this is not to say I HATE Hiccstrid. I still need to watch the other two movies before I can truly say whether this couple is truly couples' goals as many people claim. I think they look amazing together and they seem to have great chemistry in HTTYD 2. I think they complement each other in theory and Astrid would be a great help in helping Hiccup lead as chief when the time comes. But I don't love it enough to read fanfiction or watch many Youtube edits about them and at this point, I sometimes find Hiccstrid annoying to see in my fanfics unless it addresses my problems with the development of the relationship.

I know I’m probably going to get hated on BIG time for saying this but I don’t care because I’m a former HTTYD fan. I honestly find Hiccup after the first movie and Gift of the Night fury an insufferable piece of trash. I can’t stand him in HTTYD2, RTTE, HTTYD3, and Homecoming. RTTE Hiccup always pissed me off and so did Astrid. I find Astrid so damn annoying, toxic and somewhat abusive. Plus I hate her so much.. probably more than Hiccup. I like the dragons except for the Light Fury (she sucks major ass baskets and yes I’m deeply aware she’s a wild animal.. and I honestly hate how she is just a sex toy for Toothless not to mention she is sexualized) though I do love Light Furies but I hate their designs. I pretty much find all human characters in HTTYD insufferable. Well that’s my tangent for now..

One more thing, the only hiccup that isn’t insufferable is book Hiccup. I absolutely love that red headed doinkus.. he’s the only hiccup that isn’t insufferable to me.

I'm not a fan of H*ccstrid, I never was. I rewatched the first movie and second movie. And I just don't..

The physical abuse Hiccup suffered because of Astrid, who he had a crush on still -boy at that point just move the fuck on she's making you her bitch, makes me uncomfortable. That kiss at the end? Not earned. The relationship, much like Sherman/Penny, is classic Mean Bitch/Dorky Good Guy.

The second? She tried to push him into being chief, when he wasn't ready for it. I read a post that said Astrid was the reason Stoic died. And I agree. She didn't listen, led the others right to Drago like an idiot, wouldn't shut her fucking mouth and because of that, and how the fuck ever Drago FOUND them as the Haddock family was finally back together for the first time in 20 something year's, Stoic died.

The third? It's glossy and gross and yeah.. too much visual grossnes, from the character models to the gross practically glowing Not Night Fury. The Not Light Fury is Astrid's dragonsona (as Stormfly was almost nonexistent), a bitch to Toothless (who had a crush on her), she hit him and attacked Hiccup. But yeah, the stupid resolution aside, the wedding was just.. kinda lame. It wasn't earned. Nope.

httyd3 rant because i promised it before

basic movie junk, character centered, plotline centered, design centered

yes im already working on the next parts for homecoming and shit, ill add their parts to this main post!

no fucking 'this is berk' intro/outro. it's been a staple of the franchise to the point of being included in the two/three shows, and it makes you feel more outcasted, jumping straight into the action instead of the typical build up to Cool Dragon Shit TM that was present in all the other installments.

hiccups actions as chief. hiccup has more than 2 braincells, he would use, i dont know, the good portion of several other closeby islands, instead of risking a, starvation, b, easy spreading fires, c, lack of general resources, etc.

astrid was, eh, in the second movie, but in this one shes just been dumbed all the way down to Girl hate Marriage! Ha Ha! and Female Supporting Role. I can't remember a single line from her, not even the dramatic little talk she and Hiccup have.

do you like snotlout? Good, because hes a fucking dick here. Yes, the shows arent technically canon, but come the fuck on. snotlout doesnt joke about death, not when it was a. his uncle (hc on that but cmon man) b. his chief, and c. his friend's fucking father

eret gets no screentime, which is shitty, considering that hey, the former dragon trapper has been living in harmony for a year now, hows that been going for him (plus all the shit with him and gobber is disgusting, next point!-)

gobber lusting after a man barely older than the boy he raised alongside stoick is gross. Especially when you consider how hes THE only gay character. He was old and disabled and not-instagram-model pretty, yet you have to ruin that (albeit shitty in execution) work just to make your only gay guy lust after a dude way younger to the point where he could have been raising him instead of hiccup?

the whole marriage between astrid/hiccup being so 'iffy' and a 'will they won't they' dragging pain blister is just that, a dragging pain blister. yes, their relationship seems to factory reset every installment (eyes audrey greywind's hiccstrid analysis) but still, this wouldnt happen. especially not with all the forced doubt when you KNOW it's gonna happen because theyre both cishet looking and white

grimmel isnt a villain. if toothless is the only nightfury left, then the nightlights must have been doing some inbreeding, since nightfuries and more so lightfuries are so strongly connected to cats, the dark scales on thunder and his family need to come from somewhere. oh also, i doubt that the island of night was a full ruse or that the cancelled firetides comic was shitting out of its ass about more nightfuries.

the lightfury isnt a good plotline. the prior movie had made a little comment about finding another nightfury, and instead of making a whole subspecies that doesnt even look good, we could have made that foreshadowing AND added more stakes by having mutliple nightfuries under toothless's alpha respect shit. grimmel doesnt get just the dragons, he wipes out an entire species.

toothless and the tail. he wouldnt have come back, not this toothless. the gift of the nightfury my beloved.

you like ruffnut and how shes another strong, anti-dumb blonde woman character? Well, good! you remember how she was smart AND comedic when she got captured by viggo? Yep! This time, she doesnt even check to make sure shes being followed after she was freely let go. So smart and funny and RTTE ruffnut of her, right??

finale shit. Finally, the fucking centerpiece of the steaming pile of horse shit. a. the prior EVERYTHING was all about embracing what makes you different (cough cough autism analogy) and the fact that thw throws that to the side for a 'well we should hide our interests and what we love JUST because there will always be one person who doesnt like it' is fucking idiotic, especially when most of the fandom is made up of queer neurodivergents.

design shit because it deserves whole another category

lightfury - did we need the glitter and literal eyeshadow/liner? how smooth and descaled she is? how stereotypically fem she looks? I already hate her for lore and plot reasons, but cmon! did we need to furry-art-ifiy the very 'this is supposed to look like a real animal' dragons? (no hate to furries, it was just the best thing i could think of to describe how not-animal she looks)

HICCUP. they fucking instgrammed my boy. what happened to his imperfections? his scar? his freckles that were utterly adorable? he looks like plastic now, and (i havent seen a pic of his teeth in a hot second) I dont think he even has his tooth gap anymore

astrid. astrids design was.. okay. i way prefer her hair from httyd2 / rtte, but eh. she just looks like shes already had 3 kids and shes rolling up to her local baptist church, I dont know if its because her hair is more down or what, but she looks No. she looks like just how shes written: stereotypical wife character.

snotlout is pure yes and i love his design here, eret too. erets armor design is more professional and battle-smart looking, while snotlouts is gaudy-ier, with a full head-mask of Hookfang. Pure yes i love my opposite-poles-of-the-autistic-spectrum boys

valka. Oh boy. Same issues with Hiccup, but they aged her down to looking like she just dyed her hair. She genuinely looks younger than Mala, whos supposedly older than her own son. (also little me thought that they were the same age, little comment id just like to add)

I dont mind the others as much (I hate ruffnuts hair in execution, give my girl the glowup she actually deserves) but eugh. valka, astrid, and hiccup are the worst offenders (i also hate everyone other than eret and snotlout and hiccup with stubbly chins but if they were ever bearded i would Gag)

tl;dr: the hidden world goes against the message of the prior installments while also destroying all characters built up over said installments.

Do I? Yes. Absolutely.

And it has to go with how the writers handled their characters that weren’t Hiccup and Astrid. And while I’m completely happy with how long the series was, I feel like there would have been more room for intense characterization of more minor characters, (hell, even some of the gang were completely swiped by the shortness of the series.) as well as getting to know more about the world of httyd, filling in the plot holes at the end of the series, like Valka popping in at the last moment to take the egg (which her bewilderbeast had been ruling for two decades according to the second movie, and there was no sign of another bewilderbeast besides Valka’s and Drago’s in the second movie.), and just… general ways in handling certain characters redemption arcs (or lack thereof.)

For example, with the redemption arc of Dagur, I absolutely feel that it was too rushed, and that if we’d have been given more time, the redemption would have taken longer to happen. And Hiccup’s reaction to Dagur deserting was kind of… underwhelming? I suppose? Hiccup has never exactly been very confrontational, I suppose, but there’s also the added statement that the way Hiccup handled the Dragon Eye and Viggo’s tribe would have been out of character for him on that statement, considering the fact that he vehemently denied to give back a resource that clearly belonged to someone else, and then clearly wanting it back. (But you have to build drama so I suppose it makes sense?)

But also, the characters besides Hiccup and Astrid- there was just too much Hiccstrid in the entire show. I get that’s what people like, but especially in Mi Amore Wing there was just so much unnecessary Hiccstrid drama that seemed so out of character and forced by the directors- Astrid isn’t necessarily the jealous type- and to feel Jealous about Dagur and Mala? (Don’t even get me started on how foul that ship is; not dunking on anyone who really likes it, but it’s just- feels very forced and went way too fast to happen realistically.)

Let’s not forget the handling of Ruffnut and Tuffnut. They’re both very entertaining characters, yes, but Ruffnut gets not abject character development outside of her brother, and somewhat vice versa for Tuffnut. And T.J Miler’s portrayal, while funny, I have to admit, just makes the twins seem like too much of gags and “Buffoons”, than actual characters.

Now… I’m going to get into other small topics- Krogan. Handling him in the show must have been somewhat of an afterthought (though the way his body language, outward personality and so forth are all done extremely well by the voice actor and animators to portray a pretty accurate, albeit very much less seen in media victim of abuse and sufferer of depression and anxiety, as well as maybe even Stockholm Syndrome.) If we were given more time during the show for characters like Krogan, or Ruffnut, or Mala- Hell, even Johann and Viggo, we as an audience would be able to get a better grasp on their motivations and their real ideas for being where they are.

And, another thing- Krogan and Drago are the only real villains (besides Ryker), to not be given redemption arcs, and they’re both noticeably foreign and not from the archipelago. With Krogan being a most definite black man, and Drago being more ambiguous in his race, but maybe(?) middle eastern. It’s sus, if I’m going to be honest, and pretty racially charged that two characters who are not white are not given the same treatment as the other white villains. (Also let’s not forget that Johann is also an anti-Semitic caricature of a Jewish person, and that he’s portrayed as being a greedy, money hungry villain, who just wants fortune and cares for no one but himself.)

The series overall, is great- wonderful even, but it’s the handling of characters, and (mild) racism for me that kind of makes it a little worse, in all.

I hate Hiccstrid

That’s right, I said it. Who wants a piece of me?! I just found it annoying. I like both Hiccup and Astrid as characters, but them as a couple?

Yeah, no thanks. Hiccstrid is just annoying, and I think it would’ve been better if Astrid ended up with Eret instead and Hiccup had to find new love in some way in the Hidden World. Maybe he meets another girl who happens to be friends with the Light Fury and fell for her and he and Toothless start questioning wether or not they are ready for romance right now. That could’ve be cool to see. Plus, maybe have the dragons stay and have the message be that you can still be friends even in the most dire situations. Plus, a lot of people have been saying that you are not a true HTTYD fan if you don’t ship Hiccstrid. You know what I say to that?

Just replace country with fandom and that’s what I have to say, since you aren’t a true HTTYD fan if you can’t acknowledge Toothless and just think of him as a motorbike or something since he is very important.

Hiccup clearly loves her and she loves him. He's a smart person and if he was in an abusive relationship or in one that he's not happy, he could easily get out of it.

Your crackships are just that, CRACKships🥴

First of all I love Astrid as a character. I've grown up with these characters my whole teenage to adult life and I can spot the differences. She's literally the person we should look up to. But they fucking did her dirty by pairing her with Hiccup. I love Hiccup too. They just. Don't fit right if that makes sense.

The reason why this ship doesn't sit right comes entirely from the first movie. Several times she uses physical aggression towards him. Example, twisting his arms , shoving his head into rock and over all causing him extreme pain. But because she kisses him and becomes interested in him its okay? I don't think so. If it were the other way everyone would be all over it. Saying its not okay a boy did it.

Fast forward to the shows in between. Similar things happen where Hiccup is very vocal about Astrid hitting him and asks her 26 times throughout the series for her to stop. She doesn't. Not to mention she threw several hissy fits during times of great peril for Hiccup not paying attention to you guessed it her. Also going on so I will make a separate posts about his animation that shows he's not okay and that the animators behind the series didn't seem okay to it either. 😌

In the TV series we find out Astrid and her family are disgraced in the eyes of Berk even worse than Hiccup being the tribe outcast. She has the great potential but they threw it under the bus in my honest opinion.

The other reason why I don't like the ship is because ASTRID IS THE REASON STOICK DIED! Let that one sink in. If she hadn't flown her mouth off as she did in Drago's scene we find out later in the same scene Hiccup and family were going to go to Berk. Safety in numbers. But because of what Astrid said it caused Drago to strike premature and caused the death of Hiccup's father.

Lastly the animation of Hiccups discomfort around Astrid continues in the third movie. I really don't like the third movie cause they tossed out a lot of the character development for the book ending but that's another story for another time but I'm going to say a lot of people who are in abusive relationships find themselves unable to get out of it safely. But in Hiccup's case he wouldn't be able to do so he's the chief. In viking times if something were to happen as him leaving a relationship like that he and his children would be at risk by other tribe members who already don't see him fit to be chief.

In conclusion that whole ship is just a power grab to help redeem and already disgraced family. While the kids are cute he's got better chemistry with other characters. Not to mention there's animated proof behind it too. So.

Feelings on HTTYD 2

So I just finished watching httyd 2 with a friend and I thought it was great! Not as good as the first one but I enjoyed myself. I had some issues with the movie so let me summarize what I liked and did not like about it.

What I Liked

Hicctooth - Toothless and Hiccup continue to be amazing together. Such a great friendship bond and they were so cute! The moments where Toothless was fed up with Hiccup were gold.

Stoick - This man was such a badass in this movie! Great fight scenes and his rescue of Valka and sacrifice for Hiccup were so well done. His bromance with Gobber was A+ and I love how he has developed as a father. He seemed even more protective of Hiccup in this movie compared to the first movie. It was actually kind of sweet. Also, his romantic dance with Valka was such a joy to see. Seeing Hiccup happy to see his parents together made me so happy too.

The villain - Drago was pretty entertaining as a villain. I wouldn't call him the best but I thought his design was cool. I think he was a decent villain to challenge Hiccup's naivity.

Toothless and Stormfly - These two had such fun scenes together. I smiled whenever they interacted. So cute! I just really liked Stormfly in this movie, such a good girl. Her bond with Eret was cute.

Toothless and Cloudjumper - These two were so funny. Cloudjumper had annoyed big brother vibes going on lol.

Music - Once again, the music captivated me in this movie. I love the HTTYD movie end credits songs! It makes me feel nostalgic.

Character designs - Liked most of the character designs. Hiccup looked good of course and Snotlout surprisingly looked great too. I liked the greying beard on Stoick.

Eret - I felt so bad for poor Eret. I think he was an interesting addition to the cast.

Friendship of the teens - I liked the interactions among the 6 teens/young adults. I wish the whole love triangle thing was less cringe though.

What I Did Not Like or Felt Neutral About

Hiccstrid - I have seen from Hiccstrid shippers on Tumblr that the second movie is the basis for their love of the ship. And at the end of the movie, I was struggling to understand why? I liked the initial Hiccstrid cliff scene for the most part but the ship was basically irrelevant for the rest of the movie. If you take out Hiccstrid, nothing changes really. There was hardly anything interesting about this ship. Felt so generic. And honestly, this ship feels very one-sided. It's all about Hiccup but what about Astrid? What does she get from this relationship besides the clout of being a future chieftess? And Hiccup's tendency to rush off into danger?

Astrid - Not sure if I liked Astrid's design in this movie. But more importantly, I was disappointed by Astrid's character. My friend agreed with me that Astrid was just there. Her only purpose in this movie seemed to be to give Hiccup his mandatory pep talk and to anger Drago to prematurely attack. When Astrid kept yapping about Hiccup's greatness, I swear I was dying on the inside. Astrid was important in the first movie but httyd 2 solidified her status as a pretty love interest character. Her dragon Stormfly seemed to have more going on in this movie. Astrid was just meh. All she is now is just Hiccup's girlfriend.

Valka - Maybe if I watched the movie without knowing about Valka, maybe I would be more neutral about her. But I don't like her. She's a deadbeat mom. Her reasons for abandoning Hiccup were so flimsy. Stoick, for all his flaws, was learning to be a better dad and I am so sad that Stoick will not get to see Hiccup grow as a man. Valka does not deserve the privilege that's for sure. I must also say that she did a crap job at advocating for peace. Sure, argue for peace while your village is under attack! Makes SO much sense. What made her believe dragons were good anyway?? I wish Valka was the movie villain. Or at least an antagonist.

Toothless - For the most part, I enjoyed Toothless' interactions with Hiccup. But he seemed way too playful sometimes? I don't think he should have been so relaxed with Valka since she attacked them. I miss the Toothless who was aggressive with strangers. Also, I find it strange that Toothless did not know how to expand his spines. He's a wild animal and wild animals should have instincts about these things. Finally, as cool as that super saiyan rage mode was at the end, I still want to know where this power came from.

Ruffnut - I hate how Ruffnut looks. She was pretty in the first movie and she also looks pretty in the ROB show. I don't know why her older design has to look like this. She looked especially repulsive when she was hitting on Eret. I kept asking myself why the scriptwriters did this? Why make her look so gross??

Hiccup's inner conflict - I thought the introduction of Hiccup's mom felt way too forced. The whole spiel about not knowing who he is because he does not know his mom made me so confused. In the first movie, Hiccup hardly cared about Valka. There was not even a throwaway line like 'No one in Berk gets me...but maybe mom would if she were here'. Why the sudden interest??? I also think Hiccup's struggle with his free spirit desire was poorly handled. Plus, I don't understand why Hiccup got the idea that his job was to be a peacekeeper?? Peacekeeper for who?? We don't even meet other tribes! I am sure this attitude is addressed in the shows but it makes little sense to me. How do you go from making peace with dragons to being a peacekeeper of the archipelago? And what leadership did Hiccup showcase to Valka for him to deserve the 'heart of a chief' line??

These are my main takeaways! Despite the shortcomings, I did like the movie. Sigh, now it's time for Hidden World.

favorite male character: Eret from II. I love me an angsty boi. favorite female character: Valka from II. ONE BADASS MOM! least favorite character: Sadly I think it’s Hiccup himself? Azula deserved a redemption arc and Ty Lee is the girl who got shafted by not being Zuko's love interest

The Soul Society is a military state and Ichigo was a good person for never joining it and Orihime was the best Bleach character

Sasuke was right and Kishimito made him an extremist as ableist victim blaming propaganda and Sakura and Hinata are equally good

Percy Jackson and the Olympians dropped the ball by having Percy end up with Annabeth because they're 'destined to' since the point of Percy's story is that he never gets to choose what they actually want and they should've either ended up with Rachel or stayed single to work on character development and healing,Luke never actually cared about other demigods and was only using them as ammo against the gods because if he actually cared he wouldn't have abused them,Toa should've instead been a third Percy series of them destroying Olympus' corruption because they've had enough of the gods and replacing it with an actual good societal system and Percy is a super cool autistic Team Parent who'd be femme and kidcore if Rick bothered to develop their interests

1. is there a ship I used to ship but don’t anymore? not rlly anything sf related I can think of tbh. for httyd I can tho and that’s hiccstrid, I used to LOVE hiccup and astrid together but as time went on I experienced burn out and found myself feeling more neutral abt the ship itself and more salty towards the loud minority of the fanbase that stanned it hardcore and my disappointment in how they were portrayed in the Netflix series and the final movie

2. favorite woleon headcanon... tbh I love that if he does try and they’re having a private moment together wolf can actually be very romantic, in a cheesy, corny, make you giggle uncontrollably but still get you blushing sort of way. his sense of humor is dry wit and puns, there is no in-between and when he’s alone with leon the puns truly... they’re everywhere... leon will yell at wolf to stop but only because he’s laughing so hard he’s having trouble breathing
