I think there's something deeply symbolic about how Mother Knows Best, the song about Rapunzel's mom manipulating and sheltering Rapunzel so she can use her for her own benefit, being shot in the dark, with Gothel snuffing out Rapunzel's every attempt to light a candle, meanwhile, the song about Rapunzel realizing that her dreams are not out of reach— that love is real and that she can be truly loved— is called At Last I See The Light."

Why are these Disney heroines "adorkable"?
Tumblr media
Rapunzel (Tangled): Because she was raised in isolation her entire life. She doesn't have a clue about the outside world or social graces or other people besides her "mother" in general. But she's extremely eager to learn and eager to please, not to mention is a pent-up ball of energy waiting to run wild, which leads to her adorkability. It makes perfect narrative sense.
Tumblr media
Anna (Frozen): While not as badly as Rapunzel, she was also raised in isolation for much of her life, largely having to rely on the books in her castle library to teach her about the world and things such as proper etiquette, life skills and romance. But real life is not a book, so when she actually has to do these things, she often flounders due to her nervousness, excitement or inexperience, which leads to her adorkability. It makes perfect narrative sense.
Tumblr media
Moana (Moana): From early in her life, she was raised under a very strict set of rules and instilled with a strong sense of responsibility, which is at odds with her instinctive desire to break these rules and her fears that she isn't up to the challenge her responsibilities pose. All of this pent-up stress she carries within her will often cause her to explode with emotion at the slightest provocation, which leads to her adorkability. It makes perfect narrative sense.
Tumblr media
Mirabel (Encanto): As a young child, she failed to receive a special gift and room the same way the rest of her family did. Now feeling like the failure of the family, Mirabel's coping mechanism became trying to make herself as extravagant and quirky as possible. She's an incredibly "Try Hard" person, which leads to her adorkability. It makes perfect narrative sense.
Tumblr media
Asha (Wish): Um.....well, she.....yeah, I got nothing. There is no narrative justification here.
Disney doesn't have an Adorkable Problem. Just an Asha Problem.

When you go through a tag with a character or story you love, but it's filled with the one (awful) version of the character that you hate because it's the most popular version of the character or story. But you still go in because you’re desperate for content:

The more I think about it, the more I hate CS for using Varian saying "Daddy" when he found Quirin sealed in the amber as "proof" that he's still "too inmature" for the truth.
Because as someone who lost her mother at the age of 28, even I went back to my "mommy" phase during the grieving process.
Wheter you call your parent dad/mom or daddy/mommy says literally NOTHING about your maturity, ESPECIALLY when you're grieving them.

Also another thing i love in the barbie Rapunzel vs. Tangled is Barbie's rapunzel is the actual star. Yes she has her princely romance but she's also still the main focus who ACTS than just react. She's the one who manages to get herself out, she's the one who leads Gothel into a trap and she's the one who ends a potential war saving thousands of lives in the process. She's not overshadowed by the guy. And her dress looks so much more better and historically accurate than that horrid mess.

Who is more into grooming, Varigo stans who babyface and uwufy Varian to the nth degree and make Hugo an asshole stud who does whatever he wants,
OR Varipunzel and Cassarian enjoyers who draw and write Varian as taller and stronger than Eugene and a man who makes his own decisions instead of letting himself be pushed around?
Pot don't call the kettle black 😒
OooOooohHhh lOOk aT Me iM trYinG tO juStIfY a MorAlLy wRoNg sHIp
The amount of cassarian shippers who are flooding my inbox is just goofy at this point so I’ll just answer this last one.
Honey, babyfacing is not inherent grooming or pedo*helia. We are talking about two teens/young adults who have a carry the specific stud/twink dynamic (which honestly, is not very common with Varigo as they are both mostly depicted as two nerds in love). You can find this dynamic in any ship- sunshine/gloom or sunshine/grump is a thing yaknow?
I’m not saying that Varian cannot be a strong tall man in this dynamic with Hugo, but using the whole “age up/Varian is now big and burly and masculine” excuse to ship cassarian or varipunzel is just plain wrong because as I’ve said 2028183837291 times, ITS GROOMING!!
I will say that this does being an interesting point worth of discussion. The implication that Varian can only be “feminine” counterpart with Hugo is a bit heteronormative just as much as implying that Varian can only be a “real man” that “makes his own decisions and isn’t pushed around” if he is seen romantically with Cass or Rapunzel (which to me, sounds a lot like ‘the conquest of older women to prove your masculinity’ sorta thing [especially when you note that Cass is more on the masculine spectrum and more of *challenge* (I hate that term, it’s gross *shivers*)]
Then again, queer dynamics are much much different than heterosexual relationship dynamics, but Varian being a ‘twink’ or ‘the more feminine’ counterpart to Hugo doesn’t equate it to him being a stupid ass kid who’s a doormat and ‘can’t be a man’ or be assertive, and if you’re using Cassarian or Varipunzel to make the argument that Varian can only be a assertive masculine man if paired up with women much older than he is idk what to tell you other than ur using *very weird* heteronormative standards to make Varian -a character you claim to love- a much more shallow person that he simply isn’t.
If anything (and from the info I know about Varigo) Hugo is a big support to Varian in terms of how he wants to grow as an alchemist and as an innovative individual. That’s what makes the ship sweet. Cassarian and Varipunzel in comparison is just very shallow even if you manage to ignore the weird grooming and age gap.
Also come on anyone can agree that Varipunzel is more of a sibling-like ship.
Anyway, cassarian shippers please leave my blog and block me if you must. Idrfc

I can’t comprehend why Chris Sonnenburg somehow expected billions of people all around the world to watch his show and assumed that everyone would automatically gravitate towards Cassandra as our favorite character, then lash out at fans on the internet when it’s clear that Varian has become the fan favorite.
Cassandra has her fanbase. And Varian has his. Then there are many fans who don’t necessarily care for either of them and gravitate towards Rapunzel, Eugene or other characters. And you know what? That’s okay.
Fandoms bring diversity. And it is that diversity that makes fandoms fun and enjoyable. We’re all different people with different life experiences and personalities, and as such we gravitate towards different characters. We form our own interpretations and opinions about them and discuss them together. That’s the beauty of being a part of a fandom. If everyone in the TTS fandom only paid attention to Cassandra, and only Cassandra, then the fandom wouldn’t be such a fun place, would it?
The fact that Chris Sonnenburg cannot accept this diversity, and even hates it because it means that fans disagree with him, shows what a narrow minded and narcissistic man he truly is. A story does not solely consist of the protagonist, but rather, of all the characters together. Side characters are often just as enjoyable as the main characters, and add a lot to the story of the protagonist while having interesting storylines in their own right.
Varian is an excellent example of this. I think it goes without saying that Varian’s story touched millions of people that watched TTS. This isn’t something that should anger a creator. Rather, they should be thrilled and happy that their character resonated with the hearts of so many people. The idea that this would be upsetting to a creator just…baffles me. Varian wasn’t an original character from the Tangled movie. Chris created him! Regardless of what a creator intends their character’s role in their story to be, you would think that any creator would be overjoyed that their character’s story connected with so many people.
If Chris can’t accept that, then that is on him, not us.

I have literally no idea if the creative minds of Corona After Dark know about all the Chris drama but this is just too rich not to share.
I’m in the middle of their Lost and Found episode and they just said that they’re pretty sure someone in the crew just wanted to see her in a skin tight black catsuit and that’s why she’s a villain.
Gee…
I wonder…who could’ve possibly wanted that on the crew…..
And as a bonus, the CAD team also thinks someone had to be talked out of giving the moonstone suit a plunging neckline

Barfdugo really botched stuff with Baghra, lol. She aimed for a wise mentor and hit Walmart Gothel, lol.
She's what mother Gothel would be, if she herself had the Sundrop Flower's power, and kept refusing to sing the healing song, so Rapunzel doesn't want to leave her ever.
Baghra!Gothel wouldn't need the girl for eternal youth, she got her to keep her company. Aleksander!Rapunzel's locked up to stay exclusive.

Ok, I understand what I meant when I said that magical hair shit didn’t add anything to the story. I wasn’t talking about tangled, I was talking about the Rapunzel fairy tale as a whole.
Rapunzel was my favorite fairy tale, and I watched or read every adaptation of the story. Every adaptation brought something new to this tale and stood out to me. Like Barbie as Rapunzel had her as a princess and another adaptation had Rapunzel be a robot. I thought Disney would have some kind of twist to add to the story with tangled, but they didn’t. I felt like they went with the most basic premise in tangled and didn’t really try anything new. But the more I thought about the new additions Disney added in tangled, the more I thought that it extremely unnecessary to the story of Rapunzel. Like the dumb addition of the magical hair and the witch wanting to be young as a motivation instead of keeping Rapunzel safe? Did we really need that sexist and ageist plot point put in? There are so many routes they could have gone with the witch, and they basically made her the evil queen from Snow White but bland. It also added even more antisemitic elements to the story when the “original” fairy tale is already antisemitic. From making gothel look like that to characterizing her as an antisemitic caricature. How did you make an adaptation of an old fairy tale even more offensive? I’m not saying that the “original” fairy tale is perfect. I'm saying that the writers on tangled fucked up big time when they had the resources to know better and avoid making a walking stereotype. So that’s what I meant when I said this plot point didn’t add anything to the story of Rapunzel. I hate this stupid “magic hair and evil witch wants to be young for no reason” plot point, and I’m so happy that it isn’t in any of the adaptations of Rapunzel nowadays.
Edit: a stupid ass tangled stan saw my issues with ageism, sexism and antisemitism in tangled and thought "how dare you! this is true to real life." fuck off, gothel is a fucking antisemitic caricature! So if you have any stupid ass statements like that, don’t interact with this post. Be a clown elsewhere.
