“Still… I should have been there to cheer you on.”

“Pfft, you can pay for dinner this time and we’ll be even.” Raihan chuckled, before shifting his focus elsewhere. “Besides, it’s your ma, so I completely understand. Is she okay?”

Leon sighed, tilting his head. “Mom’s fine. Hop… not so much.”

“Oh? What’s wrong with our little champ?”

“Pneumonia. Mom says he got it real bad.”

That made Raihan wince. Returning the hug, Raihan exerted sympathy and concern. “Will he be okay?”

“He hasn’t been hospitalized… yet, but the doctor said he would have if they waited another day or two. They prescribed bedrest, fluids, and some antibiotics. And if he gets worse, bring him to the hospital.” Leon sighed, hiding his face in Raihan’s coat. “I’m worried.”

He couldn’t blame Leon for that. Being a champion kept him away from his family on a regular basis, so worrying was natural. Besides, Leon always made an effort to be there for Hop despite the hectic schedule of championship.

“What caused it?”

“Mom says he got caught up in a storm while training in the wild area.” Leon relayed. “Which probably did, but I think depression and stress worsened it. That Bede fellow did a number on him after a battle. Said some pretty nasty things.”

Raihan vaguely remembered Bede. The kid was Rose’s recent choice for a sponsorship. Though it would seem that it didn’t really last as long as Bede hoped. The kid certainly had an air of arrogance and pride to him. One that the kid could hopefully change as he got older.

“Why don’t we go visit him?” Raihan offered, stroking Leon’s hair. “I have one last challenger today and my last before the tournament is in two days. We can grab dinner on the way.”

Leon nodded. “I’d like that. Thank you.”

Emerging from the gym, the duo were holding hands. Leon was grinning widely and proudly. Raihan had beaten the challenger without much issue. Saving for a Machamp and Froslass that gave his Sandaconda and Gigolath a run for their money.

Waiting at the train station, Leon rested his head against Raihan’s shoulder. Sitting on a bench, they took a moment to breathe. They decided to hit the diner in Motostoke before catching the next train to Postwick.

From there, they’d check up on Hop and stay the night. Leon’s mother knew they were on the way. Which she promised to keep a secret in order for them to surprise him.

Amber eyes flashed, as he watched for the next train to come in, realizing something. “Oh, I almost forgot.” Leon kissed Raihan’s cheek. “That’s for you win in the exhibition match.”

“You sneaky little Vulpix.” Raihan chuckled, shifting slightly. “The least you can do is give me two. Double battles and all.”

Grabbing Leon, Raihan set the champion on his lap, stealing his hat in the process. Cupping the side of Leon’s face, using the other to hold him in place, Raihan went in deep. Legs bent as Leon welcomed the kiss. Amber eyes closed, ignoring the world around him, including the train coming into the station.

A small gasp escaped Leon as Raihan freed him, kissing him again. This time on the forehead. Giggling, Leon stretched out, legs resting on the bench as he leaned back, using Raihan’s arm as a cushion. His face was now an adorable shade of red as he stared at Raihan fondly.

“I love you, you know that?” Raihan asked.

Leon nodded. “The feeling’s mutual.”

The sound of a throat clearing distracted them as they realized they were being watched. Sonia, wearing a soft smile, stood beside Ash and Goh, who were curiously confused. Scooting off of Raihan’s lap, Leon sat next to his partner with a playful smile.

Ash and Goh had never seen them acting this way before. They had such a competitive dynamic that seeing them so domestic was odd. Not that Leon nor Raihan were looking to hide their relationship. It was just a first for the young duo.

“So you see, dragons don’t normally like knights.” Sonia playfully narrated. “But every now and then, they fall in love with the most charming and pure of knightly princes.”

“And I’m stealing this knightly prince for a nightly adventure.” Raihan stated, playing along. “Catching a train?”

“Yeah. Showed the boys the mural in Stow on Side and they offered to join me in my journey to Hulbury. I am dropping off a little gift to Nessa.”

Nodding, then stretching, Raihan stood up. He helped Leon up, wrapping an arm around Leon’s shoulders. Sensing Ash and Goh’s confusion, Leon stepped in.

“We’ve been together for a while now.” Leon stated, wrapping his arm around Raihan’s waist. “We haven’t gone public with it yet, and only close family and friends know. But we will when we’re ready. I hope you understand.”

“Of course.” Ash confirmed. “I’m surprised, but it makes sense. I’m happy for you.”

“Me too.” Raihan agreed, side hugging Leon tighter. “Since we’re all going the same way, why don’t you join us?”

“It took you long enough.” Leon’s mother stated, welcoming the pair in. “I almost thought you got lost… again.”

“Sorry.” Raihan apologized as he took his shoes off. “Ran into Sonia, and we ended up grabbing dinner in Hulbury.”

“How’s Hop?” Leon asked, eyeing the stairs.

“He’s okay.” His mom confirmed. “He should be awake if you want to peak in.”

Leon nodded, walking upstairs. They watched him, not saying anything until he was upstairs. His mother sighed, looking at Raihan with a tired smile.

“Thank you.” Leon’s mother said. “Hop needs it.”

“You’re welcome.” Raihan sighed. “Leon did too. He’s… Leon. Worrying like the lovable airhead he is.”

She chuckled. “I got Leon’s bedroom set up for you guys. Do excuse any mess. It’s been a while since Leon last visited.”

“We’ll manage.” Raihan assured. “Thank you for the accommodations on such short notice.”

Excusing himself, the dragon tamer followed after Leon. When he got to the top of the stairs, he spotted Leon in Hop’s room, both beaming with smiles. Standing in the doorframe, Raihan smirked.

Regardless of cause, they needed to see each other. Hop needed to see his brother. Leon needed the break and relief. Both needed the quality time.

It had been a tiring long time since the normal world turned into nothing but a faint memory. Everyone got petrified for thousands of years, making only plants and animals rule over the world.

Senku Ishigami, the first one to break out of his petrification, decided to rebuild the world with his remarkable and intimidating knowledge. There was nothing that stopped him except one certain person. Tsukasa.

After a lot of things that had happened (Including him dying and getting 'revived'), Senku met a blonde girl in the forest, she was trapped under a fallen tree. With a pulley, he lifted up the tree to save her.

As a thankful gesture, Kohaku brought him to her village. Senku was shocked, someone must've survive the petrification day if those people exist!

He had been at the village for quite some time, using science (and the help of newly found friend, Chrome) to impress the villagers and gain their trust by producing antibiotics for Kohaku's sister, Ruri.

After a loooot of time (and Ramen), the villagers slowly trusted him, allowing the guy to enter the village for a tournament which would decide the husband of... Well, Senku didn't know that exactly, but he knew that he would have advantages as the village chief, which came with the marriage.

It was an impressive plan of Senku, that's basically how he won, not to the liking of the village elders.

"So I just gotta marry the person all of you are talking about and I'm the chief?", Senku questioned, "I'll do it, where are they?".

Everyone looked at him in absolute shock.

"Senku is married!"

The former village chief yelled at him, "Wait, wait, wait! We don't even know you! I won't let a stranger marry him! You're a devil!". Senku rolled his eyes and put his pinky to his ear, which he did a lot.

"Look, the former village chief is talking at me. I don't care about your opinion at all!", Senku spat back with a smirk.

The village was confused, who should they side with?! Senku had win the tournament in fair ways and theoretically he was now married to this priest guy they were all so fond of!

"A win is a win, old man!", Senku grinned, "Now bring me wine! Wine!". Kohaku immediately yelled at him, "You're too blunt, Senku!".

The man groaned in defeat and made a hand gesture, making Senku look at the people walking away in interest. After a while they came back with wine and behind him a person in long clothing. Senku looked the guy up and down before widening his eyes, trying his absolute best not to blush.

"I'm going crazy", the white-green haired male laughed and walked torwards the other boy dressed in all blue, "Who do we have here?".

The [blonde/brunette/etc] in front of him looked up from the ground, eyes wide in an instant. "SENKU?!", it echoed through the village, leaving everyone silent.

The villagers all were confused. "You know eachother?!", Kohaku asked suddenly, making both of the male's nod in sync.

"Senku is- Well, we are friends since before elementa- Uh- Since we were kids", [Name], seemingly one of the priests in the village, stated, leaving everyone in shock. "Yeah, I thought he died or is still petrified", Senku added, grinning at his childhood friend.

"Wait, don't tell me.." - "Yep, we're married" - "HUHHHH?!"

[Name] blushed and looked at the grinning male. "Calm down, it's just marriage. With a few words we are divorced again. Just did that to become village chief", Senku said with a devilish grin.

After a second of calming down, a small laugh was heard. [Name]. He gave a quiet laugh, making everyone but Senku think he laughed silently. "I'm not even surprised. Let me guess, you want to rebuild society? With science?", The [blonde/brunette/etc.] asked his.. husband?

"Bingo."

"Are Yuzuriha and Taiju fine?"

"I believe so, we split up though".

"When did you-"

Senku gave a quick laugh, "Keep your questions in mind, i'll answer them later. Now I have to-"

Coughing was heard. Ruri! She was having a coughing attack, it sounded and looked rough. A frustrated smile set onto Senku's face and [Name] looked at him. "Senku, I know you are trying to help her, but you need to rest for a bit", He said quietly, making noone else hear it.

The white-green haired's eyes relaxed, wandering to look at the other male. The nervous smile quickly turned into a grin.

"Not a chance", He said and suddenly two men walked up to him. "You have to stay here and celebrate! It's a tradition!", They both told him and Senku tilted his head.

"Is that so?", He questioned and side-eyed [Name] who just gave a sigh, "Kohaku get the alcohol!"

Suddenly they ran. The old man in Senku's hand and the alcohol with Kohaku. With an apologetic smile [Name] looked at everyone and started running after them. It was chaotic.

The sky was clear and it was chilly. Everyone was sleeping, since they did celebrate in the end anyway and everyone was tired and/or drunk. Not Senku though. He walked through the forest, having a precise destination.

On the forest ground sat a male, it was [Name], looking up at the sky. For once a warm smile planted on Senku's face, quickly fading into a grin as he sat down next to the other guy.

"I should've expected you, you always know how to find me", [Name] said, looking at Senku who was now also looking at the sky. "You're just really predictable", Senku stated in an uninterested tone.

[Name] gave an eyeroll, "Says the predictable one". An elbow lightly hit the [blonde/brunette/etc.]'s side, making him let out a surprised laugh. "I'm not predictable. You're just way too good at reading me", Senku explained.

It was true. Everytime the white-green haired was rude or uninterested torwards [Name], it didn't work. It was true that only science could fascinate him truly, but that didn't mean he doesn't care about everything else.

He was that smart guy that everyone admired, the science boy that always stayed in the school lab, the male that decided to learn something and really did so... but for [Name] he was simply Senku.

"How did you end up here? Added, as a priest", Senku questioned with a grin and [Name] sighed. "It's a horribly long story, but let's just say that they adopted me? Sorta like that. Ruri taught me about their things and made me priest after she got even sicker than she already is".

Senku nodded and then something popped into his mind, "By the way, we are married now, you know that, right?".

[Name] choked on air, letting his head sink with a blush on cheeks and ears. "Yeah, I'm not as dense as Taiju..", He said quickly and Senku smiled at him.

"I know that I said we could easily divorce, but I don't want to. I get more advantages like this and all that.."

[Name] knew that he didn't want to use him for advantages, while Senku knew that his, now, husband was aware of that.

"You're a coward. I... like you too"

With that, Senku's grin quickly turned into a warm-hearted smile, his cheeks flushed lightly.

Is it normal for parents of young ice skaters to not medicate them if they get sick shortly before a contest? Because to me, refusing to treat your child raises some alarm bells, but it appears most people brushed it off. Is it such a common practice?

That's life for any Olympian or international athlete. You can't take most cold medicine, cough medicine, or decongestants. You can't take prednisone/corticosteroids which are found in most antibiotic courses, asthma medication, and allergy medication.

Athletes may be able to get a therapeutic use exemption (TUE) for corticosteroids. There's actually a ton of elite athletes who find ways to get TUEs for prednisone. Like Serena Williams. But I think it's difficult to get TUEs unless you're a household name or superstar.

So how does cough medicine and asthma medication count as doping? It helps athletes recover from extreme training. Non-asthmatic athletes who use asthma medication have faster respiratory recovery and can train longer and harder hours. Doping is all about training. Just a 3% boost adds up over hours of training. Usually athletes keep doping safely in the off-season. But when they haven't successfully flushed all the drugs out of their body before testing, it's TUE time. They'll do a pre-test a few days before testing to check whether they've flushed everything out. If they haven't, they'll call in some favors and get a TUE.

But you can't be just anyone to get a TUE. I don't think a single women's basketball player has ever successfully gotten one. Diana Taurasi had bad luck getting sick during Olympic years. She had some kind of bronchitis situation for months leading up to the 2008 Olympics. You can see her coughing in post-game interviews. And then she got food poisoning in Rio in 2016. She was MIA for like a week. RIP. But she still played the basketball tournament. She's one of the biggest household names in her sport. If she couldn't get a TUE for antibiotics to treat acute illnesses, no one in women's basketball ever got one. I'm always seeing female basketball players blowing their noses on the sidelines lol. I guess it pays to play a prestige sport like tennis or gymnastics or figure skating. Stars in those sports get a real off-season for doping training and they can get TUEs whenever 😬

The World Anti-Doping Agency estimates that screening and testing athletes only catches around 2% of doping. It really is that wide-spread. It's pretty easy to tell who's doping in individual sports. If an individual athlete has at least a 4 month off-season every year, that's plenty of test-free training time. If they train longer harder hours than everyone else, they're doping. If they don't disclose how extreme their training regimen is, they're doping. If they win everything year after year after year, they're doping.

The obvious example of a constant champion is Michael Phelps. No one in the world can train naturally the way he did. He has an extremely rare genetic anomaly. And I mean rare. He's one of like two people on medical record with a gene expression that hinders lactic acid production. He can barely produce any lactic acid. So he never gets sore muscles. He can train twice as hard as the rest without needing to recover. If he was in another sport, he would've trained himself into career-ending injuries after a few years of international competition. But swimming is gentle on the joints.

Usain Bolt, Shaun White, Yuzuru Hanyu, Nathan Chen, Serena Williams, Simone Biles, Katie Ledecky... Do they all have the same extremely rare genetic anomaly as Phelps? Or do they find pharmacological ways to achieve Phelps-level training regimens during their off-seasons?

They're all great athletes. They all put in the work. And they all put in the hours. But they put in too many hours. It's more hours than possible for a clean athlete. For elite individual athletes, at a certain point, there's no way to naturally work harder than your competition. Every clean competitor works themselves till they collapse. Everyone is giving everything physically possible. But the natural body has limits. If you want to work beyond the point of natural collapse, you start taking heart medication and asthma medication. Just leave a 1 month window to get it out of your system before testing. No one will ever know.

ALEX Okay, so you uh... know about that whole thing?

ATHENA 'Whole thing'? You mean when you were like... one of the biggest names in sporting sim gaming for years, plural? Yeah, I figured it out. Me and the others in the forces, we didn't really have anything else to keep up with, so we got very much into keeping up with those tournaments.

ALEX Alright, alright. Just thought I'd be able to keep my nerdiness a secret from my crew for a little while longer.

ATHENA Why bother? I mean, if I was as good as you at that stuff, I...realizing as she says itI never would've stopped.

ALEX I guess I just... the same as you. I thought of it as my job, after a while. It started as a way to help me cope with my anxiety, and then, I guess it turned out that I was good at it, and liked it. I liked it a lot.

But I got married, and then we were gonna have a kid, and-

ATHENA Wait, you're married?

ALEX I was. Me and Gabriel split up, a little while after our son, Orion, was born.

ATHENA Oh... that's too bad.

ALEX Oh, it's fine, really. Gabe's amazing, honestly, we both just... wanted different things out of life. It just wasn't working for us to be married anymore. Now we're friends. We're friends that used to be married, and friends that have a son that we love more than anything in the world. And I can't say I mind it, as long as I know they're both waiting for me back home.

ATHENA Wow. I mean, that sounds... that sounds like all you could hope for.

ALEX Yeah... yeah, I guess it is.

C41 How dare you.

FELIX Meant nothing by it, my voltaic friend.

C41 Then you know what's good for you.

[Felix chuckles.]

MILES Yeah, right, tough guy.

C41 I'm sure I don't know what you mean. I can be intimidating, that is, when I'm not asleep in my-

FELIX Nest!

C41 What?

FELIX Nest. Up there, on your left, riiiight- There.The group's eyes land on a large nest in a nearby tree.

MILES You think there's any in there?

FELIX According to what I've learned, the season would be right for quite a few baby birds.

So, I mean, if there were... to be... lots of baby birds... I should probably get a closer look. For... research.

MILES And I could help with your research. I mean... I could help you count.

FELIX Oh, no, I mean that's uh...

It'll be quite the climb to get there, so I wouldn't ask you to-

MILES Pssh. What are friends for? You said earlier you weren't feeling so good, anyways, so like... I can go check on those birds. For science.

FELIX Oh, no, I feel fine, thank you. I think a climb might actually do me some-

MILES Here, you hold Cally. I'm climbing.

FELIX Good.

C41 Wait, what? Also, it's Cal.

MILES I'm gonna go see those birds.

[sfx: footsteps running off]

FELIX HEY! NOT FAIR.

You stay right here, Cal. I've got a tree to climb.

[sfx: footsteps running off]

C41 Well, it's not like I'm going anywhere- Wait, wait! Doctor Couvillion? Officer Abbott?! Felix? Miles? Oh, the Commander is going to be so mad at you!beat, meek...Guys?

[C41′s BOOT-DOWN JINGLE PLAYS]

[Alex and Athena laugh.]

ALEX No, no, you're kidding me. Stuck?

ATHENA Completely! Okay, okay, so you have to understand, Patroclus C? It's a freezing cold rock. A moon.

ALEX Nothing homey about it?

ATHENA No! No redeeming qualities! We used to call it the Snowball. So, so, so: there I am, and my sister is just screaming bloody murder with her tongue stuck to the side of the transport.

ALEX And did someone lose a tongue that day?

ATHENA Somehow, no! I had to run back to the house for hot water and leave her there, and I swear her tears were frozen to her cheeks by the time I got back and we managed to get her off the thing! God, it was awful. So the chilly mornings around here? They're nice.

ALEX And you've got the charming anecdotes to prove it, starshine.

Oh, is... is that okay? If I call you that? It's just... it came to me, and I thought it suited you. But if you don't like it-

ATHENA Oh! Oh, no, I... it's fine. I like it. It's sweet.

ALEX Okay. Okay, good.

I just figured, you know, it might... we're gonna be out here for a long time. I want to be friends with you guys, with... you. If that's what you... all want too.

ATHENA I think I'd like that, Alex.

Can I ask you something?

ALEX Sure, if I can ask you something after.

ATHENA Oh?

ALEX Yeah, no, I had like... a question or whatever for you too, but you totally, uh, you go first.

ATHENA Okay. Sure. So, uh... here's the thing. How do you... how do you know how to find the course?

ALEX ... What?

ATHENA How do you know where we're going?

ALEX I thought you were military. They don't teach you the way-

ATHENA Not exactly. How do you know where we need to go?

ALEX Oh. Oh I... okay. I think I get it. Well, I... it started off as trial and error, right? Even when I was just picking up the patterns in my games, or anywhere else, I just would have to take what I saw and turn that inward into something I could say was the truth.

So when I had to start figuring out how pieces of the world and their patterns sorta... fit with other pieces of the world into a bigger conversation, it... I mean it wasn't easy. I don't even wanna say it was comfortable. But it was something I could be confident in, at least.

And, these days, if I don't feel confident in it... I mean, I don't feel confident in it all the time, that's actually what I should've led with. Because, like, how could I be? When things, patterns, don't add up sometimes, it feels like something is lying to me. But at least I've been doing this long enough, that I know that I don't have to trek back and learn the patterns from square one anymore. I can... take it in backwards steps.

I can seem like I'm confident in what needs to happen, and then maybe some part of me can take that little signal boost and make me feel confident. And then, if I feel confident, maybe I'll find the pattern I didn't know in the first place, and that'll feel enough like the truth to me. It'll be enough to get us by. To get me by.

But... that's just me. Sometimes I think everyone has a different way of listening for the truth, you know?

Is... is that what you were asking?

ATHENA Uh-huh. Your turn.

ALEX Okay, now, tell me the truth on this one, Romero: do you actually need to record all of those logs?

ATHENA I'm sorry?

ALEX Dude, do you have to actually do them, or is it just like your diary?

[Athena laughs.]

ATHENA Hey! What's that supposed to mean?

ALEX I mean, no judging-

ATHENA I'm the chronicler, sir, that's my job.

ALEX Alright, Officer, alright. I'll take your word for it. But if you ever wanna try out some new monologue material on something, or someone who isn't a comms, you know where to find me-

ATHENA Yeah, yeah, I'll keep that in-

[sfx: a tree branch breaking]

[Miles and Felix scream]

[sfx: a thud]

ATHENA (CONT'D) Mind. Should we be... running about this?

ALEX Running fast, Romero.

[sfx: forest ambiance, a campfire]

FELIX, MILES (in unison) Owwwwwww.

ALEX You two... are going... to be.. the death of me.

FELIX, MILES (in unison) Owwwwwwwwwwwww.

C41 Yeah, yeah 'ow'. Traitors.

ALEXHold still... for just a second.

FELIX Once more, with feeling?

MILES Sure. Why not?

FELIX, MILES (in unison) Owwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.

ATHENA Officer Athena Romero recording. Still Day 28. Second first aid stop of the day. We had a tree incident. Or a gravity incident, involving a tree, I guess.

C41 You two are lucky you didn't break a leg. Or that I didn't get carried off by some dinosaur, leaving me there like that, Felix! How could you?

FELIX I... I... I'm sorry, I'm so weak-

ALEX Ah, save it, Couvillion. Not like you need your strength for much else. Speaking of which-

I'd like to propose a toast. To some time off, to finally making it to the rendezvous point where we await our booty, and to... I don't know, to no more falling out of trees, and no more backwards steps.

FELIX Here, here!

ATHENA Cheers!

MILES Cheers.

C41 Bon appetit.

ATHENA So, Cal, when can we expect for the shipment to get here?

C41 Oh, in about... three-

(distorted and ragged)

Four- three, three,- expect, no, three, seven, no, no, no expect, no, three, two, two- ERROR, retrieval denied, ERROR- ERROR, no, two three-

ATHENA Miles? Are they okay?

MILES Cally? Cal? What's wrong? Come on buddy, hello?

FELIX What is this?

MILES I don't know, they've never done this before, I-

[C41′s BOOT UP JINGLE PLAYS]

C41 Bon appetit! Sorry, you were saying? Oh, right, the shipment. Should be around three days.

MILES ... Cal? You... you okay? You weren't messing with your code again, were you?

C41 And if I was?

MILES Cal-

C41 Kidding, kidding. Joke, funny, haha. No, I wasn't, I swear. Probably just a brief malfunction, whatever it is you're talking about. I feel great!

MILES Okay. If... if you say so.

C41 But I am, like, suuuper tired, gee, I think I need some rest, okayeveryonegoodnightbutnotthetraitorswhoabandonedme! Kisses!

[C41′s BOOT DOWN JINGLE PLAYS]

ALEX I think that's the cue for everyone got some rest, huh? Sleep in tomorrow?

FELIX Oh, I'll drink to that.

ALEX Then let's go for lights out, booboo crew.

[sfx: retreating footsteps]

ALEX If you need to do a log, starshine, just make sure to put the fire out when you're finished, alright?

ATHENA Always do, Alex.

ALEX Yeah, you're right. You always do. Goodnight.

ATHENA (CONT'D) You know, I... I don't even know if I have something I need to talk about tonight. I'm exhausted from the journey, and you already know all about that, HQ.

I don't know. Seems like trouble follows us wherever we go, but at least that's something to count on.

But like I said, I think I'm going to try something new tonight. I'm feeling inspired. Tonight, I'm just going to look up at the sky, and I think... I think I'm going to look for a pattern that feels true.
