My Gravestone Maintenance Program was approved!!!!

My Museum/Historical Society is located on the East Coast, and (as many know) there are a lot of gravesites - from unkept, unknown, and abandoned sites, to more known town cemeteries.

I am personally super interested in gravestone conservation and interpretation, something which my work fully supports me including more in our programming :)

Last October, I was able to lead a walking tour through a local cemetery to talk about the history of gravestone symbology, art, and the interpretations of local history through cemeteries

The interest this walk drew inspired the creation of a larger program to happen this summer, where I get to not only teach more on gravestone symbology, but also teach basic grave cleaning to community members!!! I am especially excited because my town has a deep history of fraternal orders, and so many of the gravestones have some really neat art reflecting the different orders

Generating terrain in an infinite world

It would be impossible to hand craft an infinite world, so instead I generate a terrain sprite outside the camera viewport. I use the length of the camera and terrain rectangles, the direction the player is currently moving in and circles to position the terrain, so it is always just outside the viewport. Old terrain which is far from the player gets destroyed.

looking at all these fucking job postings i can't help but wonder if i'm fucking myself over. i know that there are lots of openings in my field right now but they're all part-time and i'm looking for full-time work (with fucking benefits please and thanks). but like, am i just fucking myself out of getting great experience in a job i actually enjoy? am i just fucking myself into being unemployed for months on end because i'm sticking my nose up at taking two part-time jobs?

maybe i'm just looking in the wrong places but there's nothing in my field in full-time work, except for positions i don't have the qualifications for, namely a teacher's college certificate or an education in leisure and recreation studies

it seems the only full-time work within my grasp around here that's even vaguely related to my field/where i actually want to be is being either a montessori school classroom assistant or an activity assistant at a retirement home, both of which i think wherever i apply may feel i am stretching my qualifications to meet due to a lack of direct experience (even tho the experience i do have is totally flexible to both of these demographics)

idk it's just. frustrating. i fell into administrative work over the pandemic but i would really like to do the thing i actually went to school for now. y'know, the thing i actually give a shit about

MIT students build connections with Black and Indigenous Brazilians to investigate culture and the environment

In January 2024, at the height of Brazil’s summer, a group of 20 MIT undergraduates will arrive in São Paulo, Brazil, for the Independent Activities Period (IAP) course WGS.247/21L.592 (Race, Place, and Modernity in the Americas) jointly offered by the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences’ programs in Women’s and Gender Studies, Literature, and Writing. 

Continuing a program developed in 2019 and launched as a special course in 2020, the three-week course offers students opportunities to study how American and Brazilian Black and Indigenous writers, artists, and filmmakers’ art and cultural activism — particularly women’s — can impact racial justice and environmental issues. 

The class will visit historical sites, cultural centers, nature reserves, and museums while also engaging in conversations with local scholars, activists, religious leaders, community organizers, and artists. 

By mixing classroom discussions with on-site exploration and cross-cultural exchanges, the course offers innovative pedagogy that is experiential (learning by doing), immersive (learning within an environment), and interdisciplinary (learning across different fields).

An immersive course, years in the making

Joaquin Terrones ’99, a lecturer in literature and women’s and gender studies, was already teaching this material when he considered expanding its scope. “It seemed like the natural next step was to take students to Brazil so they could experience its incredible culture, art, and activism for themselves,” he remembers.

In 2019, he and Wyn Kelley, a senior lecturer in literature, received a Higher Education Innovation grant from the MIT Jameel World Education Lab (J-WEL) to develop the course and teach it as a special subject the following year.

Generous support from MIT-Brazil, the Office of Minority Education, and MindHandHeart completed its transformation into a full-fledged course in women’s and gender studies, literature, and writing as part of MIT’s Independent Activities Period (IAP) last January.

Helen Elaine Lee, a professor in MIT’s Comparative Media Studies/Writing program, co-taught the subject in its first full year, sharing her experiences using creative practices to further social justice.  

Undergraduates from across MIT’s five schools, particularly Black, Latino, LGBTQ+, and first-generation college students, have enrolled. This outreach is important because some studies have shown students from these groups are underserved by study abroad programs, participating at significantly lower rates.

“Our students want spaces like the one created by this course to think deeply and collectively about the daunting array of crises we face, from catastrophic climate change to entrenched violence against communities of color,” says Terrones.

No day at the beach … well, maybe one or two

Although a few weeks in South America during January might sound like a vacation, the course is rigorous and intense, packing a semester’s worth of material into three weeks. Students spend mornings in seminar-style discussions, head out across the city for field trips in the afternoon, and return to their residences in the early evening for a few hours of readings or screenings. 

For Tamea Cobb, a senior double majoring in chemical engineering and literature, the class trip to Rio led to an epiphany. “I remember waking up super early to watch the sunrise on the beach, where we saw a man practicing capoeira, an Afro-Brazilian martial art form disguised to look like dancing by enslaved Africans forbidden from practicing martial arts. We had just learned about capoeira the week prior, so it was a beautiful full-circle moment.”

In addition to class outings in São Paulo and Rio, students also organize their own weekend trips within Brazil to places such as Salvador, the unofficial capital of Afro-Brazilian culture, and Inhotim, a vast open-air art museum and botanical garden in the middle of the Atlantic Forest.

Beyond Brazil

The course’s impact continues well after its completion as participants incorporate what they learned into their work and lives. 

“The course was a priceless experience that further revealed the interconnectedness of African experiences in the Americas,” says Afura N. Taylor ’21, who double majored in physics and writing. “It has influenced my writing by providing examples of literature and cultural practices that center ancestral memory.”

Educators also see benefits. “I had no idea it would give me a new research project on the presence of Brazil in Black U.S. print culture from the early national period to the present,” says Kelley. 

In fact, the course’s success has inspired two new IAP subjects in Brazil this year: 21G.S07 (Language Conversation and Brazilian Culture) by Nilma Dominique from the Global Studies and Languages Section, and 10.496/1.096 (Design of Sustainable Polymer Systems in the Amazon) by Professor Bradley Olsen in the Department of Chemical Engineering.

When asked what makes the course special, Professor Lee describes “[a] unique power [that] derives from rigorous discussions of challenging texts and films that question prevalent assumptions about history and politics, and immersive cultural experiences that open mind and heart, expanding and empowering students who often feel isolated and excluded on MIT’s campus.”  

She adds, “In addition to deepening my intellectual and political understanding, this class gave me a profound experience of ancestral recovery that has fed my artistic work. For our Black, Latinx, and LGBTQ+ students, it was a liberatory experience of community. A re-education. A cultural and personal homecoming.”

Also while im being a jackass braggart online can i say as a surfer on the asian in asia education system ocean i cant find it in myself to be impressed by US high school successes in the slightest what do you mean your trigonometry teacher. They make one guy for every math subdivision? Its trig the whole class???? Do you also have a specific calculus teacher???? Whats your next period?? history of monarch butterflies?

Wait heres the famous primary school leaving exam question from here. Im not 12 years old anymore so im too fking stupid to get it right without thinking really hard. But theyre really so wicked to these 12 year old children over here theyre like freaking evil wizards setting ghastly puzzles for those who might wish to escape the evil lair of primary six. And every time the little kids are like dodging and weaving around the fireballs getting thrown at them. They parkour around these questions within minutes. And then they grow up go to progressively more advanced tuition centres turn 17 and then kill themselves

a thing thats really funny about googling universities is you look up ‘good [area of study] university programs’ and it just gives you like. the top rated universities in general.

#like aye im sure uoft and mcgill and ubc are at the top of ur list no matter what program u put in #but just because theyre the most hoity toity of all the schools here doesnt mean each and every of their programs are the best. tbh #like actually i do think trent or dalhousie or ubc have for example good environment programs. #i dont however immediately think of uoft or mcgill for that. #not that i take much advice from googling these sorts of things because post secondary (in north america esp) #is REALLY a scam and all corporate controlled etc #not to mention that most post secondaries… are actually the same #you can get just as good of an education at for example brock uni as at uoft. but one has more prestige #like mostly it doesnt matter. tho re: my previous tags yes there ARE some better schools for certain things #im not taking art at western university when i could go to ocad or nscad!! #anyways i like looking these things up just to see what schools offer stuff im into. idc about ratings

#im Looking at the early childhood education program at college rn. like 👀👀👀 #im not totally sold but like. good pay/i do like kids/it could be a fulfilling career for me/all of my background works so well for it #music and arts and multiple languages AND i have experience volunteering with kids + a first aid degree #and now that im actually coping with my anxiety instead of feeling awful all the time my social skills will (gradually) improve #AND the program has work terms so id only have to do one semester before i start getting a feel for the actual job #like. this might actually be an awesome idea. #levi.txt #i dont know for sure! this isnt smth i ever considered and i staunchly have never wanted to be a teacher #and id def have to talk to a real person working rn in the field and make sure its a safe idea for me as a visibly queer person #its canada so im physically safe but i need to know that theres not gonna be any expectations as to appearance beyond the obvious #plus the govt is pushing So Hard to get more of them so it makes me wonder what working conditions are like #but guys im not kidding the pay could be Good. the province is desperate for them rn so hourly wage could get up over the average #and there are a Lot of financial aids already #and again!! fulfilling work that i wouldnt hate (probably) (but i can even ensure that before i graduate!) #the more i think abt this the more i kind of like it a lot
