There are artists who, if they told me: "Can you meet them in person if you give me your lungs?", I would immediately say: "Here, they are all yours." I'm talking about figures like Olivia Rodrigo, Sabrina Carpenter, Milo Manheim, Joshua Bassett, and if we talk about more well-known and famous singers, I can't forget to mention Miley Cyrus, Britney Spears, the girls from Little Mix, Niall Horan, Harry Styles, or If we talk about actors, Elizabeth Olsen, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Jenna Ortega, Hunter Doohan, and many more. Meeting any of them would be a dream come true and I would die simply happy. But then there are those other artists who if they offered me to meet in person, I would say no. Not because I don't adore them, on the contrary, they are artists that I deeply respect. However, I prefer to stick with the idea of the artist I like. For example, Taylor Swift. I feel that if I met her in person, I would no longer be able to listen to her music in the same way, I would no longer be able to identify with her songs. I would see her as a real person, with her virtues and her flaws, and I fear that would ruin the magic I feel when listening to her music. Maybe she's an amazing person, sweet, kind, kind, easy to connect with, or maybe she's not, and honestly, I don't want to know. I prefer to keep the idealized image I have of her alive in my mind. It's like keeping a mystery intact that makes her art even more powerful and meaningful to me. And be careful, with this, it doesn't mean that I don't see them as people, but rather that they prefer not to know them as they really are, because it would break my heart and it's something I don't want. Obviously, this is my opinion and you can not share it, that's clear.

names i went by irl and reasons i chose it and then changed
simon > chose it because of simon/psiionic > first name i used. changed it because i also happened to have a special interest in alvin and the chipmunks as a very little kid so my family kept calling me simon the chipmunk and it got really embarrassing.
alan > chose it because of alan resnick, because my dad kept suggesting i name myself after an artist > turns out its my dads middle name, both my grandpas middle names, and two different of my uncles middle names. ew.
ezra > randomly chose it for a psyche ward stay > i didnt like being called it at the psyche ward
joshua > until dawn, matching with my ex boyfriend > broke up with my boyfriend and didnt want a name associated with him
evan > everymanhybrid > just didn't feel right. still really like it and consider it one of my names
michael > TMNT first, FNAF second, Halloween third, and I just have a tendency to like characters named Michael. I also liked that it was vaguely religious, and I like that it's can be shortedned to "Mikey" which is boyish and fun but michael sounds serious and professional > i liked jake better
jakob > homestuck > i dont plan on legally changing it again, but i do want a more gender neutral name friends and close people can call me. that being said, i still really like this name and consider it my correct name. i do prefer jake over jakob though jakob sounds too formal

2023 Wrap up and 2024 Goals
So I have been keeping track of what books I've read and what games I've played each year, for many years now. It's actually been really fun and interesting to look back and see what I ended up with, and it helps when I have to reference when I last looked at something :D So! I'm gonna put my Book/Games list year and combine it with any goals for 2024
Things I've read since Jan 2023
The Written by Ben Galley
Ariel by Steven R Boyette (read most)
STNG: Grounded by David Bischoff
Ascendant by Michael R Miller
STNG: A Call to Darkness by Michael Jan Friedman
STNG: Metamorphosis by Jean Lorrah
Denver Moon: The Minds of Mars by Warren Hammond and Joshua Viola
Masters of Doom by David Kushner
Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros
The Horse Whisperer by Nicholas Evans
The Mountain in the Sea by Ray Nayler
The Tiger and the Wolf by Adrian Tchaikovsky
Untethered Sky by Fonda Lee
A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab
This Gilded Abyss by Rebecca Thorne
Witch Hat Atelier 1-11 and Witch Hat Atelier Kitchen
All That Glitters by Loren K Jones
Comments: This is an example of like...I don't even remember reading some of these items. The STNG books (picked up from a library sale) were unexpectedly decent, I believe those were ones actually written by the show's screenwriters, so they read almost exactly like regular episodes. Also, I include manga (and some visual novels) on these lists because of the large quantities of reading ~ as such, WHA was probably my favorite read this year. The art is so gorgeous and the artistic struggles really resonates with me. My favorite non-manga waaas :Ta hmm, probably This Gilded Abyss, though I did not like the ending that much. Its fine if a book is going to be a series but I think that books should be able to be read as a one-off. I guess what I'm saying is make sure the ending is reasonably satisfying for THAT book, even if you want to set up for the next one. For example I'm well aware that ADSOM is a series however it's written with a satisfying ending that I can treat as Just One Book. Which I'm going to do. (Hopefully this all makes sense)
Currently Reading: Well my first book of the 2024 list is Heaven Official's Blessing 1, since its been on my shelf for a while ~ I'm already halfway through and just couldn't finish it before the new year. I see there's a ton in this series so IDK if I'll get through it all, but I do like it more (so far) over the other series by the same author
2024 Book Goals: I have a lot of unread ebooks so I'd like to start getting through those this year, as well as a couple paperback books on my shelf that have been there for years.
---
2023 Video Games:
Baba is You
Cats Organized Neatly
Resident Evil: Village
Ghost Song
Salamander County Public Television
Cassette Beasts
The Mortuary Assistant
Vampire Survivors
Cult of the Lamb
Milo and the Magpies
Pizza Tower
The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles (DNF)
Celeste (again)
Super Mario RPG remake
The Darkside Detective
The Darkside Detective: A Fumble in the Dark
Comments: Honorable mention is MyHouse.wad ~ I haven't played classic DOOM in so long and didn't want to learn how to mod it to play this, but I watched videos obsessively for several weeks when it came out. Its super cool. The Mortuary Assistant I found....strangely relaxing, I'm pretty sure this was not the common experience LOL. TGAAC made me kinda mad, I love AA but I COULD NOT with this one. I got 3 cases in, the pace was absolutely glacial and I did not like any of the side characters so I wasn't enjoying it. Oh well. My favorite game was probably either RE:V or collectively the two Darkside Detective games I just played.
Currently Playing: I just started Super Mario Wonder yesterday after getting it for Christmas. It's cute! I haven't played any mainline Mario games in like 10 years. Seriously the last ones were like Super Luigi Bros and Mario Maker 1 (and even then I think these are spinoffs 🤣)
2024 Game Goals: I have several games in my backlog that I would consider "Large RPGs", such as BG3, and I'd like to get through at least one of them. They're really daunting because of the time commitment required to finish. I'm currently working on some stupid grindy stuff in FFXIV so hopefully (lol) I will just take a break afterwards and can work on one of them.
---
Other 2024 Goals/Art Goals
Yeah I don't like to go too wild with goals anymore. 2023 was just a hot mess year in terms of my day job, for the entire year, and my brain got pretty scrambled. I couldn't think of any silly goal this year (I did "all Ghibli Movies" in a past year for example), so I'm gonna say:
Finish at least 1 sketchbook
Do/Post more finished pieces
Finish a piece of art I've had sitting on my desk since June 2022
I did a big consolidation of art supplies at the end of the year so hopefully I won't be so daunted by what to use in general. The ink challenge I did was very helpful getting a little bit of motivation back. I also have this piece of art that's been sitting unfinished on my desk for a year and a half and I really need to finish it, LOL. I think what happened is the lineart is pretty complicated - once I finished transferring it to a nice sheet of paper I got overwhelmed with the idea of 'ruining' it and put it aside. I really need to get it done though, however it turns out, and move on, as I think the lingering thought is blocking all other pieces.

COMPLETE MESS is Lashton AF
Let’s take a look at what was said during the promo of the song, and then do a lyric analysis…
What’s been said about the song through interviews::
CM was the first song written for the new album during their band trip to Joshua Tree. During a soundcheck on their TMH tour, the guys have spoken about other songs that were written during the trip, but this was the first song they started writing and completed which made it to the album.
Written and produced completely by only the band. They kept reiterating this fact in all of their interviews and press while promoting the song.
Ash posts an ig story to his personal account of Luke wearing the “Complete Me(ss)” shirt. He also has the picture on his phone at the ready to show us during an interview when the shirt is brought up.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Repeated detail given that it was Luke who came up with the “you make me complete, you make me complete, you make me a complete”. In one of the interviews, Ash expresses how it was then given a twist from “complete” to “complete mess”. Ash then says he put the twist to make it a 5sos song. During the instagram livestream Ash did for the track by track of CALM, he remarked about liking to write sadder and darker songs, so this gives me reason to believe that it was Ash’s songwriting influence showing through.
Luke brought his bit of chorus “complete” lyric to the guys, then Ash and Cal then went and wrote verses together.
In the visualizer for Luke’s Place In Me, he is laying on the ground holding a glowing “source-like light”. It looks a lot like the “Source” in the CM music video the band finds at the end.
In a bunch of the interviews when Michael talks about the creation process of Complete Mess, he mentions that the band was listening to a song for inspiration (as of writing this, it hasn’t been revealed what song he’s referring to). An observation I’ve had is the similarities of CM to Luke’s sonic feel of his solo album. The song “Repeat” has a very similar chord structure. Chords for CM are a minor 5th of D Am G D, Repeat is D Am C G. There’s also a continuation of the complete mess that those lyrics give, then Complete Mess goes through the complete mess and resolves with being complete. “Repeat” is guitar with Luke’s voice, then Complete Mess is brought together with the booming drums.
Repeat is heavily guitar, CM is heavily guitar and drums. Like CM is the possible “complete” part to the complete mess of “Repeat”.
In the Extratv interview, Luke says it started as a romantic song and has connection with Luke’s You Complete Mess shirt (yet the video is about the band????) (How relate to each other as artists, “tragic trudging through deserts”, most philosophical video, a lot is about how create tension in this group, tension creates art, and creates connection with fans.)
During promo, on the official 5sos TikTok account, Luke and Ashton run towards each other and hug to CM as the soundtrack.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Album intentions are 1. to bet on each other, 2. Lyrical content is very personal to their journeys from their experiences. (To me, this logic supports the romantic feelings are a relationship within the band. Why would a romantic inspired song have a music video about the band…)
Luke’s fave lyric of “Complete Mess” is before the chorus “I learned my lesson when I felt you slip away and I’m missing out on half my life, you make me complete”.
Now for some lyric analysis…
"COMPLETE MESS"
Caught up in heaven but your heaven ain't the same
He loves this person. Things are going well.
Feeling such immense love, but the kind of love from his partner is different to what he could experience anywhere else. Possibly he and his partner having different ideas between what each think love is.
And I've never been a saint, have I?
- He’s never been an angel. Not made things any easier, and have done bad things or not played by the rules. Possibly having different ideas about what love is and how he and his partner have struggled figuring out how to make it work.
This evanescence always fleeting like a flame
Seems to be calling himself out for not putting in all of the effort he should’ve.
Evanescence means lasting for only a short time. Simile to compare evanescence to a flame. A flame only lasts until it burns out, or is extinguished. Has a burning for this person.
But I'm never one to change, am I?
Seems to be a reference to the lyric in their song “Easier” about never changing. “Is it easier to stay? Is it easier to go?
I don't wanna know, oh, But I know that I'm never, ever gonna change, And you know you don't want it any other way”. Thus, this leads me to believe, this song must be a continuation of that same relationship.
Call it a lesson when I feel you slide away
- Using reason or logic when trying to explain a disconnect within a relationship. Either taking it upon himself to be so defeating when there’s an emotional distance between him and Luke,. Sliding away is an action that the other person is doing.
- This could be a response to Luke’s song “Slip Away”. That song was about experiencing the lurking feeling it could end at any moment when your happy relationship is going well. There’s happiness but there’s still the lingering feeling it won’t last.
It’s a cute play on words slip versus slide.
And I'm missing out on half my life
- Being stuck in these thoughts detract from enjoying life to the fullest. Mental health has become even more important to Luke and Ash during the Covid19 lockdown/quarantine. Luke spoken openly about getting therapy.
- When this person isn’t around, that’s when the complete mess feeling is felt. His partner is what makes their life whole. This partner IS their PERSON. Could venture to say, this partner could be a fated relationship.
Oh, you make me complete
You make me complete
You make me a complete mess
Oh, you make me complete
You make me complete
You make me a complete mess
Hang on to moments like they'll never drift away
Living in the moments of life
Combination of use of metaphor and simile in this line. “Hang on to moments” meaning continuing to remember or living like moments with their partner just happened recently. I’m wondering if the “they’ll is referring to the moments or their partner. Savoring the experiences he shares with this partner with no thoughts of it ever ending.
This line uses “drift away” and the prior verse used “slide away”.
'Cause you'll never get to say goodbye
- Ash reassuring Luke that this love is longterm and forever. This relationship is solid and locked down.
I ask no questions as your colors take their hold
- Letting go of skepticism. An acceptance of the vibrance into your own life that his partner brings. (For instance, Ash has tweeted a conflicted reply about marriage. Self understanding of not being into the institution of marriage but being into commitment.)
- Could be a reference to gay love.
As my darkness turns to gold inside
- This partner has such a magnificent impact on him that the sadness is turned into long lasting beauty. The love shared with his partner is so life changing, it’s replacing negative beliefs about everything. Transformation. Referring back to not being a saint, perhaps.
I learned my lesson when I felt you slip away
- It was “call it a lesson” now its “I learned my lesson”. The process of learning how to have a full loving relationship with his partner.
- It was “slide away” now it’s “slip away” this time. Slip away has a connotation that it’s the perception (vs the action of slide away) he has that the other person is doing from him.
And I'm missing out on half my life
Oh, you make me complete
You make me complete
You make me a complete mess
Oh, you make me complete
You make me complete
You make me a complete mess
(You make me a complete mess)
(You make me a complete mess)
Caught up in heaven but your heaven ain't the same
But I've never been a saint, have I?
Oh, you make me complete
You make me complete (You make me complete)
You make me a complete mess
Oh, you make me complete (You make me complete)
You make me complete (You make me complete)
You make me a complete mess

This question is, is it ever justified to torture an individual to save the lives of many? And if the answer is yes, how far can you go? This issue is indeed a very sensitive subject and I think it takes guts for any filmmaker to put it out there in the open like Gregor Jordan did. Add to that the clever fact that he doesn’t actually make a choice, but rather lets the audience decide on whatever they want to think and feel, and you have a pretty gutsy and controversial concept. In a nutshell, this film is about a man of American descent who has become a Muslim and has now, as an act of terrorism, planted 3 nuclear bombs in 3 major American cities which will go off in four days. Screenwriter Peter Woodward made some very tactical decisions considering the characters in the story. They are all somewhat stereotypical, but this is no bother because they’re all there for a reason. Carrie-Anne Moss, as an FBI investigator, represents the conscience, the sensitivity and the struggle to make the right decision. Samuel L. Jackson is her polar opposite; the brutal, rational, stone cold “interrogator” who does what he does because he’s the only one who can and willing to do it. The means he is willing to go to in order to get his subject to talk ...

Florence Montmare, Charred Joshua trees, Nevada
Montmare is a Swedish-American-Greek artist and photographer. She captures a visual record of America following the tradition of Walker Evans, Robert Frank and Richard Avedon. As a female immigrant artist, she shares a different point of view on the country than those portrayed by these photographers in the 1930s, 1950s and 1980s. ‘Their portraits had such an impact on me; however, they were of a certain era and created by men,’ she says. ‘The time is right for a new look at the country, and this is from a woman’s point of view’
