Take the A!
A Monthly Book Club for Reading Aspec Books
The monthly aspec book club is here! Whether you're ace-spec, aro-spec, a combination, or neither, join us in reading a variety of reads featuring a-spec main characters across genres. With no set meeting dates and discussions segmented by chapter spans, you can read and discuss these stories at your own pace. Our selection process also seeks to ensure that each member gets to provide direct input when deciding each month's reads.
More information below the cut; Discord invite in the reblogs.
Signal boosts allowed and appreciated! :)
Our Mission Statement
Take the A is a book club focused on reading fiction books across genres with characters on the ace/aro-spectrum to help readers discover the wide variety of stories that feature these often overlooked identities. You do not have to be aspec to join, simply excited to read and discover new stories.
How It Works
Each month's read will be selected by a process consisting of a nomination and a voting round. Members have three opportunities to contribute to the selection process: (1) by nominating a book, (2) by reacting to nominations, and (3) by voting on finalists. Books can consist of novels, novellas, graphic novels, and webcomics; nonfiction reads, anthologies, and collections will not be considered at this time. When the month begins, channels will be opened segmenting the books into their parts, usually defaulting to three sets of chapters. Throughout the month, readers can participate in commentary and suggestions within these channels as they progress through the read at their own pace. Channels for previous reads will remain open for a three-month* period after the month finishes, allowing readers to go back if they missed it or continue discussion if they desire. *Subject to change depending on activity levels, community wants and needs, etc.
Kicking off February
In order to start slow for February (and to prevent people from having to scramble to find a book last minute), there will be no nominations or overarching read for the month. Instead, five free read aro short stories from across the internet will be voted on by users, ending February 4 at 8 PM ET. The first Nomination phase will begin for March in mid-February.
The link to the Discord and initial taglist is in the notes. Feel free to follow this account for group updates and book recs! Ask box is open for questions.

Comes out April 16
Sophie and Jo, two aromantic and asexual students at Wellesley College, engage in an online feud while unknowingly becoming friends in real life, in this dual POV Young Adult contemporary debut from Ann Zhao. Sophie Chi is in her first year at Wellesley College (despite her parents' wishes that she attend a "real" university, rather than a liberal arts school) and has long accepted her aromantic and asexual identities. Despite knowing she'll never fall in love, she enjoys running an Instagram account that offers relationship advice to students at Wellesley. No one except her roommate knows that she's behind the incredibly popular "Dear Wendy" account. When Joanna "Jo" Ephron —also a first-year student at Wellesley— created their "Sincerely Wanda" account, it wasn't at all meant to be serious or take off like it does—not like Dear Wendy's. But now they might have a rivalry of sorts with Dear Wendy? Oops. As if Jo's not busy enough having existential crises over gender, the fact that she'll never truly be loved or be enough, or her few friends finding The One and forgetting her! While tensions are rising online, Sophie and Jo are getting closer in real life, bonding over their shared aroace identities. As their friendship develops and they work together to start a campus organization for other a-spec students, can their growing bond survive if they learn just who's behind the Wendy and Wanda accounts? With its exploration of a-spec identities, college life, and more, this platonic comedy, perfect for fans of Netflix's The Half of It and Alice Oseman's Loveless, is ultimately a love story about two people who are not—and will not—be in love!

Ace/aro books coming out this year that I’m looking forward to!
Is Love the Answer by Uta Isaki - stand-alone manga about a college girl who discovers she is aroace. The same mangaka also did ‘Mine-kun is Asexual’ a couple of years ago which I liked, though it was much shorter, so I’m happy to see a full length release from them. This came out just last week, so I’m super excited to read it when it gets here!
I want to be a wall (Vol.2) by Honami Shirono - manga series - releasing 17th Jan. I already posted about how much I enjoyed Vol 1 of this series, but for recap it’s about an aroace woman and her lavender marriage to a gay man who is unrequitedly in love with his best friend. I’m really excited to see how their non-conventional relationship plays out :) it’s very slice of life and cozy!
I am Ace by Cody Daigle-Orians aka Ace Dad Advice - releasing 21 Feb 2023. I’m glad to see a book about a sexuality actually written for an ace audience, because I feel like a lot of aspec books/articles are aimed at raising awareness with allos. I’m excited to see how this one goes!
Sounds Fake But Okay: An Asexual and Aromantic Perspective on Love, Relationships, Sex, and Pretty Much Anything Else - by Kayla Kaszyca and Sarah Costello - releasing 21 Feb 2023. I’ve listened to their podcast a bit over the years and I’m curious to see what they come up with in this book!
If you want to see a fuller list of all the ace and aro books coming out this year, check out this list HERE!

Yo guys, can anyone recommend me some acespec books (particularly fantasy) where it’s the mc who is on the acespec, and they explicitly say they are? I’ve just finished reading Every Heart A Doorway and it felt so nice having an mc who’s ace as well as them explicitly saying it, so now I need more 😭

10 Indie Fantasy Books with A-spec Main Characters
Enjoy some magical a-spec spec-fic.
Tumblr media
From asexual to aromantic and every variation inbetween, these fantasy books have a wonderful selection of a-spec LGBTQIA+ main characters for your next read!
While some of these books don’t outright announce some of the characters’ identities in the story, there are cues that a-spec readers are likely to pick up on either in the first book or later in the series. For the ones that aren’t completely obvious, I’ve received confirmation from the authors.

Even if Yaan does spend most of his time working or worrying about work, and seems to have forgotten that they used to have actual conversations…
When the city decides to tear down the iconic theater building in Kel’s old neighborhood, Yaan’s indifference toward his pleas to help save it forces Kel to confront his growing unhappiness. In the aftermath, both will have to decide whether their relationship is salvageable.

She soon realizes stories aren’t perfect when there is no one left to write them.

The Thirteenth Key
by Cara Nox New Adult Science Fantasy featuring an ace mmc
The chaotic crew of heisting misfits in Leigh Bardugo’s Six of Crows meets the familiar yet fantastical, modern landscape found in Robert Jackson Bennett’s City of Stairs.
“The thirteen emblems given to the original rulers weren’t just symbols. They’re keys to the Vault — one that no one’s ever opened.”
Noa has lived her life as an unsuspecting, ID-burning, face in the crowd that disposes of “problems” for her miscellaneous, secretive employers. So, when Noa’s surrogate father — a Seer — hands her a long-lost emblem, telling her with his dying breath that it’s her responsibility to reignite magic, she laughs at the idea that the fate of their world rests on the shoulders of a killer. Instead, she uses his words and the key he gave her as an excuse to go on one final suicide mission to seek out the power supposedly waiting for her to annihilate his murderer.
Prince Glacier Caelius has lived his life trapped inside a gilded cage, pushed down by the ever-present threat of death as the bastard son of Amarais’s late king. But when the rebels attack during a nationalist party, Glacier’s rescued by none other than Noa and her merry band of thieves, who are scrambling to salvage a failed attempt at stealing his country’s emblem: the Soul of Amarais. When the dust settles, he’s the only person left alive to unlock the palace vault and give the Soul to Noa in exchange for saving his life.
Well, once they’re able to formulate a plan to take the palace back.
Struggling with their tentative, newfound freedom, Noa and Glacier must learn to work together to survive the urban landscape of Avaria’s greatest cities fortified by technology in the wake of dwindling magic. The goal: steal as many keys as they can before their pasts catch up. But the further they go, the more they realize that something worse may be lurking on the horizon, and they may very well be the only ones able to stop it.

Bloody Spade
by Brittany M. Willows Young Adult Urban Fantasy featuring an ace fmc, aro mmc, and demi fmc

Suitable for fans of A Darker Shade of Magic and This Savage Song, or anime/manga such as RWBY and D.Gray-Man.
A girl full of heart A thief touched by darkness A hot-tempered golden boy An unwitting servant of evil
The era of magic was once thought to be a myth, but after the Reemergence ushered forces both dark and light into the mundane world, it has since become a harsh reality. Now those affected by this strange power — a specialized group of Empowered called Jokers, known collectively as Cardplay — must protect their world from the darkness that threatens to consume it, all the while fighting for equality in a society clinging to normalcy.
But the Reemergence was only the beginning.
When another influx occurs on the seventh anniversary of that fateful event, an unfortunate encounter at ground zero lands Iori Ryone, a teenage boy in possession of a corrupt and legendary magic, in the care of recent Joker graduate Ellen Amelia Jane. From him, she learns the Reemergence may not have been the inevitable natural disaster it first seemed.
Someone is trying to tear down the barrier that separates the magical realms from the mundane. The question is why, and can Cardplay stop them before it’s too late?

Trick
By Cara Nox New Adult Urban Fantasy featuring a demi fmc and aroace mmc
Cassandra Clare’s The Mortal Instruments series meets V.E. Schwab’s The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue with a dash of Disney+’s Loki in this new adult urban fantasy.
WELCOME TO NEW ATLAS: A CITY WITHIN A REALITY JUST BEYOND OUR OWN.
Evie is a nobody. Spending her days in college classes and her nights studying, having a social life has never really been a priority. With her sights firmly set on the future to keep away her thoughts of the past, she loses her grip on the present when her world is ripped out from under her. And it’s all thanks to two mysterious strangers showing up on her doorstep, claiming that she can turn back time.
Cade is a notorious troublemaker. He’s never been afraid to throw around his name to get what he wants as someone who’s clawed his way to the top. But power is quick to change hands in this city, and when he chooses to blatantly disregard an order from his leader, his older brother, he’s tossed back down to the bottom again. He’ll be more than lucky to regain any sort of trust when everyone knows he’s one of the best spies there is, sliding in and out of shadows in the blink of an eye.
Ren is a bored teenager. Always labeled as the “golden child” or “gifted student,” he finds himself writing down cryptic messages and following strange leads, rather than putting on the same old song and dance for his family. Especially once he discovers his little stolen fragments of the future are starting to take a darker turn. Perhaps chasing the life everyone wants him to have isn’t necessarily in the cards for him, but there’s only one way to find out.
So when someone within the secret society known as the Custodians targets Evie for her power, the clock starts in the final sprint to hunt down the culprit. In order to uncover whatever hidden clues are lurking in the past, the three of them have no choice but to peel back the layers of obscurity built up between their factions to figure out why she’s being hunted and how they might be able to fix their bleak futures before it’s too late.
Just remember: time is nothing but a trick.

Wow…. Just, wow. Holy crap did I love this book. I loved Dev and Charlie. I loved the blatant aspec rep, the queer rep, and the mental health rep. All of it was so good! Not to mention all the commentary on reality dating shows. I honestly don’t know what else to say about The Charm Offensive other than I really, really loved it. I want to dive back into it and start a reread. If it’s not already clear, this book is getting a solid five stars. And I’m just gonna go scream over this one in a corner.
Reading Challenge Prompt Fills:
Romance Readathon: lgbtq+ rep, pastel colors on the cover (sneaking one last one in 😊)
PopSugar: a book set in Hollywood
Shop Your Shelves: a new to you author
Read Queerly 2023: aspec main character

book review: little thieves by margaret owen
characters: i have found some of my new favorite characters. vanja is a fantastic mc, i love her voice and her growth. she is overflowing with emotion and so smart, but the kind of smart that bites her in the butt. she is so snarky and lovable and i love her skewed moral compass. AND shes aspec. i thought her companions were also incredibly compelling and complemented her and challenged her in various ways. and the low gods were fascinating and the villains were horrific. *chefs kiss*
relationships: vanja has like 3 foils for characters and they all are so lovely and unique in their own ways. the romantic relationship i did not think i was going to like but they got my onboard. this is also a book i would point to for those who love found family. sometimes i think it gets thrown around where it doesnt apply but you can feel the love here. and the dynamic between vanya and gisele? we love to see growth.
plot: incredibly fast paced and well thought out! thieves make for some of my favorite protagonists and stories so i loved seeing the fast paced action scenes and the scheming. i also am partial to fairy tale retellings, even ones i am not familiar with.
writing: i loved the mix of classic fantasy elements with modern day commentary. sometimes it can both me but owen masterfully intertwined them. i will say i did not care for the sections owen would tell the reader and not show but luckily those were not often.
themes: i would love to do a marxist reading of this book honestly. but also the theme of how past trauma effects people and how power is viewed and who decides who deserves what. . .i thought it was incredibly wise and well thought out.
favorite quotes: so so many but they are also so spoilery
"I've already met Death, she doesn't care if I'm pretty."
"The maid was learning to lie, you see, because she had learned the truth would not protect her."
"I know bravery is real because I see you choose it every day."
5 out of 5 stars, i adored it, if you love ya and fantasy and fairy tales, this is a must read!!

Thoughts on the book: The Cybernetic Tea Shop by Meredith Katz
I finished this book, "The Cybernetic Tea Shop" by Meredith Katz last night. It's a nice and short novella that's only 6 chapters long. The chapter lengths make for great before bed time readings.
Tumblr media
The story is about Clara, an AI repair tech and wanderer, and Sal, a fully autonomous robot that runs an old tea shop, and their meeting. Clara is aspec (asexual and/or aromantic) though this is only touched on a little, but expressed nicely through the narrative and relationship development. The series also tackles the ethical issues that can surround human and autonomous robot based relationships in a similar, though far better way than a series like Chobits (which has aged very badly in certain ways and as an adult, comes across as quite creepy in many ways too).
But, yes, The Cybernetic Tea Shop does a great exploration of issues like autonomous robot and "coding" and how that can be relatable to issues like not being able to move on or stagnation in human beings, as well as the implying the less than ethical idea of a human owner being in a relationship with the autonomous robot they bought, and how Clara and Sal's relationship works around that.
I found a lot of the issues explored here could translate to tropes that you find in many allosexual romance stories (stuff like soul mates) and how this short novella kind of dismantles that. It's very queer in its exploration of these kinds of things and Clara and Sal's bond, which is definitely queerplatonic in nature. The way the series explored intimacy without anything romantic or sexual was also very refreshing, and the ending is really like a wonderful fantasy, but one that is also grounded in realism and the idea of life as being ever changing, but with a need for some level of consistency and stability.
Aspects of both Clara and Sal's characters really called out to me and I found them both to be quite relatable in different ways. Anyway, I liked this book. It wasn't necessarily ground breaking in any way, but I liked the representation and being able to see a character like myself represented in a nice and simple story. If you want a quick read, then this is a good book to pick up!

Aspec book review
Is Love the Answer, by Isaki Uta, is a short and sweet manga about identity , relationships , and self-discovery. It's a cute tale about one person's journey to understanding oneself in a world obsessed with love and romance. With elegant illustrations and boisterous characters , Is Love the Answer delves into the layers and growth of personal identity.
Things that were cool
Sai liked how Isaki-sensei represented many different types of aspecs and through depicting one type of aroace's self-discovery , didn't fall into the trap of throwing other aspecs under the bus. Agender rep !! I've only seen that twice before. Isaki-sensei has both partnering and non-partnering aspecs , which is a divide Sai see in a lot of media.
Things that weren't cool
Aromanticism , and specifically aroace-ness , is described as a subset of asexuality , even though it's its own thing. The story wasn't very .. subtle , even though the delicate art seems to indicate that. The latter is more of a personal preference , and is also a staple of many slice of life mangas anyway.
