aromantic and asexual people deserve representation. we deserve to see characters who feel neither sexual nor romantic attraction. we deserve to see characters who only experience romantic or sexual attraction. we deserve to see characters who experience different types of attractions at different levels. we deserve representation for the variety that is the aromantic spectrum and the asexual spectrum.

Allos you are not allowed to ship canonically aroace characters and use the excuse “aroace people can date too”. We are well aware of what our own sexuality mean.
Yes, aroace people can still date but that’s not the point. You don’t get to decide what aroace characters can and can’t do when you yourself aren’t even on the spectrum
You don’t see people letting straight people decide what gay characters can do so y’all shouldn’t be deciding what our characters can do either

"They're bi and no one wants them" boring, insufferable, why make them bi to begin with and then say no one wants them. Seems like you're playing it safe not to piss off the biphobes.
"They're aroace and no one wants them" hilarious,it's less annoying, they don't want anyone to begin with. And it's a great way to confirm them being aroace by having them mention that they're really not interested every time someone goes like "Ew,you have a crush on me or something?". Or when someone assumes they're in a relationship with/has a crush on their friends or enemies.

Heyo! Have you watched Koisenu Futari (恋せぬふたり, Two people who can't fall in love) yet? It's a great series, just 8 episodes long! I binged it in one day :) [smiley]
It focuses on two aromantic asexual people living together. This is a little appreciation post, containing some thoughts that it evoked in me as an aroace.
If you don't want spoilers, please don't read!
Tumblr media
It's so relatable how Sakuko keeps blaming herself all throughout the show… Insecurity stemming from societal expectations that dictate romance is for everyone, and that people who don't date are somehow "failing" in life; I think this affects allos as well.
When I broke off my romantic relationship, I too felt like it had been my fault, for not having been a good enough partner, for not being able to love them in the same way they loved me.
Tumblr media
To finally learn that you are not "defective", that there's other people like you…! I love how the two MCs don't grieve their lack of attraction; Sakuko is perfectly happy discovering she's aroace. She and Takahashi are living their "best life" together.
Sure, many aroaces do wish they were allo, and that needs to be represented too, but this series to me really shined a light over why they want that: it's because amatonormativity is rampant in the world, not because lacking attraction is inherently sad. The main conflicts in the series stem from the clash between allo society and the aroace experience, after all. I think that's neat! It gave me a good dose of aroace joy—while still showing the hurts that come with it, realistically—and I really needed it.
Tumblr media
I didn't expect her to come out to her family so soon, but whoa, that was intense. Her mother's negative reaction is what all people who exclude a-spec people from the LGBTQIA+ community should see, to understand that we face the same issues they do.
I haven't come out to my parents as aroace yet, and watching this made me realize how awful it actually feels to be in the closet. I somehow hadn't realized I am. I've always felt safe coming out to them as other things, as bisexual back in the day, and as trans non-binary.
It might be because my confidence disappeared when they reacted badly both times, but this coming out feels almost impossible.
Comparing it to coming out as bi, it's really not that different: if you're bi, you're promiscuous and date too many people; if you're aroace, you're a prude and cold-hearted. If you break away from the status quo, you're wrong either way.
But at least, most people do eventually understand the bi experience, if they understand same-gender attraction, and fuse it with straightness, even though it's a flawed method.
With aros and aces, instead, it's such an alien concept for an allo, which makes it way harder to come out and have to explain to them how to deconstruct allo-amatonormativity. It's exhausting. Thankfully, there's people like Kazu who are actually willing to learn about us. That gives me hope.
Tumblr media
I feel like it's super eye-opening to find out the concept of romance didn't even exist in the past. Pretty sure that in Europe, it originated during the Middle Ages from the ideal of chivalry. So it's really just a social construct, and opting out of it shouldn't be so controversial!
It's just a set of pointless, annoying rules like having to kiss eachother, having to say "I love you", and doing it all a set amount of times, otherwise it's not good enough. What if we don't want to? What if it doesn't come natural to us? If it's just a social construct, fuck it, I'm not adhering to that! We do whatever makes us happy!
Tumblr media
Even in the series itself, Sakuko too goes through a heartbreak, even if it's not the romantic kind: she valued her friendship and future cohabitation with Chizuru above all else, but Chizuru abandoned her, because of romantic love. It's not true that aroaces have it easy.
Like our MC, we have to deal with fear that we'll come off flirty when we're just being friendly, confusion over concepts that we feel we should understand, shame over the fact that we're different, fear of loneliness, frustration and pain that we'll always come second to our friends' romantic partners, or even trauma from a relationship or sexual encounter that we didn't really want. I could go on and on.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
These last scenes really got to me. Especially the second one… I admit that I cried, when she had to turn her down, and it seemed like her aromanticism had ruined their relationship. It hurts that the way I am could seriously harm someone I care about. It hurts that most people work differently and that they can't help it, and that we can't help it either. I don't like being put in that position, to cause someone a heartbreak. I have with my ex, and had to watch them spiral down… It was horrible.
Tumblr media
Still, I wouldn't change my orientation for the world. I'm confident in my identity, I love being aroace.
In the end, we can all reach our full potential, reach a point where we feel fulfilled and that we're living our best life, find ourselves a family if it's what we want, have our dream job and house. Being aroace doesn't condemn us to a life of unhappiness. That's what this series left me with by the end; it gave me so much hope for my future.
(I'm aware I'm coming off as a bit toxically positive here haha, sorry if I'm striking a bad chord; I'm just in a really good period right now, and riding this wave for as long as I can! Hopefully I can rub it off someone else as well.)
That said, I really loved this j-drama, it was funny and relatable and emotional, I wished it had lasted longer! It seems like the author isn't even aroace herself, so I'm amazed at how good the representation was! So much thought and research has gone into it, and it shows; the result is amazing.
Thanks for reading my scattered thoughts about this! 🧡💛🤍🩵💙

Finished this today!! I loved this scene and I couldn't get it out of my head so I had to draw it.
A QPR fic that I absolutely adore! Would highly suggest reading it, the author does an amazing job on characterization, and it's literally just about characters figuring out they're aroace and then healing together. it's so fluffy :)

SPOILERS FOR BITS OF EPISODE 8
pairing: alastor hartfelt x hellborn! reader (platonic marriage)
Summary: y/n gets sucked into the princesses dream of the hotel by their husband after trying to enjoy their day off from work.
When you had been summoned by your husband, you had just wanted to relax and enjoy your day off from work.
The shock you felt when you were greeted by the bubbly princess had flustered you, because you weren't used to talking to royals.
Alastor had first explained who you were and what you do was quite the shock. Being married to the Radio Demon, platonic or not, wasn't something demons had expected Alastor to do.
He looked at you and Nifty as family and occasionally took the both of you on trips to Lulu Land after everything at the hotel was taken care of.
He would sometimes out of nowhere want your attention or lean his elbow on your head (you were a bit shorter than him).
He wasn't the most affectionate but would sometimes call you "dear" or "sweetheart" whenever the two of you were alone.
No matter that you were Hellborn, he was still happy to have a friend like you that would continuously listen to his broadcasts. He was also happy Rosie had taken a liking to you, but he already knew she would. She was a sweetheart.
You were one of his closest friends and when he had found out about platonic marriages (courtesy of Rosie of course, she knew almost everything about things like this) he knew he would ask you to be by his side.
While the two of you grew closer, you couldn't help but be glad you had married Alastor. You were the happiest you could be, and of course your parents were proud as well.
And as you stayed at the hotel, the other main four (of course not including Husker, Alastor, and Nifty) had been considered family.
And as time went on, the battle between the hotel staff (along with the cannibals from cannibal Town) and the exorcist angels, had destroyed the hotel you had come to love and was worried sick when Alastor disappeared after he held off Adam.
When everything was over and done with, you were relieved that Alastor was alive and well, which, after the failed extermination, you didn't want to leave Alastor's side for the whole day, fussing over him and the injuries he had sustained.
And once everything had settled down and you had gained a new room at the hotel, you had became a little more protective over your little family, and that protectiveness had gone over to Lucifer as well, even if he was the King of Hell.
Another chapter of yours and your Husbands lives were about to open, and you didn't know whether it was good or bad. And with the knowledge of Alastor's soul being owned by another demon gave you a feeling that nothing will be happy. Not with a life like yours.
I'm sorry if he's ooc, I just really wanted some fluff with him and of course he wouldn't be overly affectionate, because it's Alastor, but he does care about the reader and loves them just like Nifty.

This month, not one but two manga with aroace protagonists will be released in English!
Kimi no Sekai ni Koi wa Nai (Is Love the Answer?) by Uta Isaki and Watashi wa Kabe ni Naritai (I Want to Be a Wall) Vol. 2 by Honami Shirono are both coming out January 17th!
Tumblr media
きみのせかいに恋はない Kimi no Sekai ni Koi wa Nai
Is Love the Answer?
By 伊咲ウタ Uta Isaki
A poignant coming-of-age story about a young woman coming into her own as she discovers her identity as aromantic asexual. A complete story in a single volume, from the creator of Mine-kun is Asexual. When it comes to love, high schooler Chika wonders if she might be an alien. She’s never fallen for or even had a crush on anyone, and she has no desire for physical intimacy. Her friends tell her that she just "hasn't met the one yet," but Chika has doubts… It's only when Chika enters college and meets peers like herself that she realizes there’s a word for what she feels inside--asexual--and she’s not the only one. After years of wondering if love was the answer, Chika realizes that the answer she long sought may not exist at all--and that that's perfectly normal.
Available from Kodansha (Japanese) | (English)

わたしは壁になりたい Watashi wa Kabe ni Naritai
I Want to Be a Wall, Vol. 2
By 白野ほなみ Honami Shirono | Emma Schumacker, Alexis Eckerman (Eng.)
Any good love story starts at the beginning: Where and how did the lovebirds meet? Was it love at first sight? And most importantly, was there a spark? For Yuriko and Gakurouta, their initial meeting was nothing to write home about—after all, matchmaking services aren’t unheard of. But a chance second encounter on the street revealed that as an asexual woman and gay man, they might have much more in common than they initially assumed. And in that moment, they felt not a spark but something better: the seed of a friendship, ready to take root and bloom.
Available from Kadokawa (Japanese) | Yen Press (English)

The "aros/aces can still do" etc etc! conversation is generating a lot of back and forth recently, and I never seen much productivity from it. Some people help make it a more nuanced conversation (thank you!) but I always see us returning back to where we started. Can we move away from this argument? Instead, I want to propose exploring how activities may look different for an aro or ace individual in a platonic, romantic or other type of relationship.
Little anecdote from me: sometimes I think, "maybe I'd enjoy a romantic relationship." But this thought is followed by another: that my partner, especially if allo, would need to be open to the relationship looking very different from what society expects. It feels like too much work. Helping someone unlearn allonormativity while balancing each other's needs and opinions? Hard! Relationship desire at zero. (I promise there's other reasons I don't want a relationship haha)
So I'm keenly aware that what I'd want from companionship isn't the same as other people. Even if I did date, even if I did "conform" to society's expectations of having a "special someone", that relationship will still not be allonormative.
The conversation doesn't have to be so polarized. Yes, aros and aces can still date, kiss, and all those arguments. But relationships with people, with these activities, are going to look different. Being aro or ace or both is like navigating the world through a different lens, and I would love to see this be explored more in fandom spaces.
So what I want from this discourse is not as black and white as whether a character can or cannot do something. It's exploring how doing or not doing something is like for a character who is aro or ace. And honestly, isn't it intriguing?? If a character doesn't feel romantic attraction, what brings certain characters together? What makes up the chemistry if sex is not involved? What does a relationship without touching/kissing/etc look like? Is it a romantic relationship, a QPR (or other or nothing)? Thinking beyond love makes relationships much more interesting!
[i've never posted on tumblr before so.. here's to putting my thoughts on the internet, cheers]

okay but one thing i will be FOREVER pissed off at is the fact vivziepop gets praised for lgbtqia+ representation but absolutely fucked over the ONE aroace character. say whatever the hell you want about whether or not alastor is aromantic, but vivzie herself admitted on stream that she doesn’t want to confirm whether or not he is, because she’s afraid of fan backlash. what the fuck does that have to do with it? she already gave fans permission to ship whoever and interpret her characters freely!! if she can confirm sexualities such as blitzø being pan, angel being gay, or charlie being bi— what’s the problem with a character being aromantic? that’s where we draw the line? love this show, love helluva boss, vivziepop is an extremely talented creator but i truly wish she’d be a bit more considerate..

“Rick did Artemis so dirty in PJO shes not aroace bla bla bla”
It’s almost like PJO isn’t completely accurate and they’re still characters for him to write. The fact y’all are so hurt by a character being aroace says a lot too.
Artemis is aroace. The hunters are aroace. It’s canon in the PJO universe go cry somewhere else because I’m not taking the aphobic shit

Why is that when a character is clearly attarcted to other characters in a gay way, people see it as clear queer rep, but when a character doesn't show any signs of attraction they sign them off as "straight"?
Like you guys DO know that Aromanticism and Asexuality are pretty much real identies that DO exist right????
