Asshai Hairstyles
Tumblr media
People of Asshai wear veils and dark colors and red. Red is often worn because of the worship of Rhollr. Their hats are very traditionally medieval and based of of ancient Byzantine headpieces.

A Game of Thrones, Bran III
He lifted his eyes and saw clear across the narrow sea.
To the Free Cities and the green Dothraki sea and beyond, to Vaes Dothrak under its mountain.
To the fabled lands of the Jade Sea.
To Asshai by the Shadow, where dragons stirred beneath the sunrise.

Many called her beautiful. She was not beautiful. She was red, and terrible, and red.

The city of the night, the haunted Stygai is located north of Asshai deep within the mountains of the Morn.
"And in the caves that pockmark the cliffs, the demons and dragons and worse make their lairs. The farther from the city one goes, the more hideous and twisted these creatures become. Stygai, the corpse city at the Shadow’s heart, where even the shadowbinders fear to tread."

Do you think that Bran's vision of a Dragon in Asshai plus Qaithe's statement that Dany would find truth in Asshai are evidences of the idea presented in WOIAF that their was a people in Asshai who created and dominated the Dragons before the Valyrian? Maybe this was a revelation that Martin intended for Dany before he decided to give up on the five year gap and her going to Asshai.
I certainly think Asshai had a role to play as the land where the dragons survived, but whether that's because that where they were created or because of some other reason I'm not sure.

I think we can all agree that our answer to the age old question of "would I wanna live in asoiaf ?" Is a big resounding NO. That said, I would love to be a visitor (a tourist if you will) because damn the places are so cool so:
I know I couldn't put everything in it but I only have 10 answers available. So please please tell me which one you would want to go to in the tags.

I compiled all the 'Unseen Westeros' pictures from the 2019 Exhibition into a document.
Please read the document in case you are worried about artist credit. I will update individual picture in captions too whence I have more time.
I am not claiming this art to be mine, I do not make any profits off this nor do I have any rights to it. I have only compiled the art that was freely posted on the internet by the original artists.

How does Asshai even work, though? It's a large city, a hub of magical learning, and has a decent level of trade.
But no children exist in Asshai? I mean, it's a perfect idea for the spooky vibes of Asshai but...how does Asshai work, then? Is nobody actually from Asshai? Is it more of a spooky arcane university than a city?
I take it to mean that all children brought there die and that the environment renders people infertile, but why don't the adults seem to be getting sick as well?
What is life like in Asshai? It can't be all spooky sorcery all the time, can it? There has to be servants, political leaders, traders, and just...regular joes living life, right?
Asshai is just actually one of the most fascinating places to me, I wish we could actually see what the day to day is like there.

Quote
Easternmost and southernmost of the great cities of the known world, the ancient port of Asshai stands at the end of a long wedge of land, on the point where the Jade Sea meets the Saffron Straits. Its origins are lost in the mists of time. Even the Asshai’i do not claim to know who built their city; they will say only that a city has stood here since the world began and will stand here until it ends. Few places in the known world are as remote as Asshai, and fewer are as forbidding. Travelers tell us that the city is built entirely of black stone: halls, hovels, temples, palaces, streets, walls, bazaars, all. Some say as well that the stone of Asshai has a greasy, unpleasant feel to it, that it seems to drink the light, dimming tapers and torches and hearth fires alike. The nights are very black in Asshai, all agree, and even the brightest days of summer are somehow grey and gloomy.

Did you know there’s a theory about Asshai actually being the remnants of a super advanced civilisation and the site of a possible nuclear catastrophe and thus all the Known World is actually living in a post apocalyptic state?
I sure as fuck didn’t until today.
and fuck, that actually makes a lot of sense now that I think about it.

The Shadowlands
    By Shella Longclaw
It’s astonishing to believe the ancient kingdoms of Asshai and Stygai were known for their lush vegetation. Sea Green Emperor Jar Han demanded hundreds of pounds of grain and fruits from Asshai as tribute. Legends claim that Stygai turned dark during the Long Night.
“From their metal spilled out poison and their roofs created black clouds, which choked men to death, the lords of Stygai have caused their own downfall. Their hubris had been that if they could wear clothes untouched by hands, they could breathe life back into corpses.” A quote from the wife of Har Loi, the first Gray Emperor. Many Yi Tish scribes believe this to be the reason for the darkness.
The Lengii believed magic gave birth to the Shadowlands. Ulthos corsairs had been raiding Asshai and the filth from Stygai had been ruining their crops. Supposedly, they turned to magic for an easy solution, and magic always comes at a cost. The large kingdom was reduced to a mere city. Stories said that the ghost grass sprung from all the sacrificed townspeople.
It still wasn’t enough blood. Reavers came from the Shadowlands to steal babies and children from Yi Ti. Thankfully, the Maroon Emperors were able to stop them and drive them back. Only Jinqi is under attack occasionally from the reavers today. A child survivor stated that reavers kidnapped children in order to extend their own lives. No one wishes this to be true.
As for the other rumors about the Shadowlands concerning monsters, I’m afraid to say those words are true. I have seen one of their monsters with my own eyes. The Shadowlands are not the birthplace of dragons. Sphinxes dwell there. I’ve seen images of the Valyrian sphinx. Apparently, they’re not Valyrian at all. The soldiers of Jinqi have mentioned mammoth sized crabs, though they seemed to assault mainly the lands east of the Shadowlands.
Despite the deadly sinister reavers being from Stygai, I would never wish to visit Asshai. I’ve seen the darkness lurking in those lands and dare not tread there so I’m not consumed by it.

A Game of Thrones, Daenerys II
Magister Illyrio murmured a command, and four burly slaves hurried forward, bearing between them a great cedar chest bound in bronze. When she opened it, she found piles of the finest velvets and damasks the Free Cities could produce…and resting on top, nestled in the soft cloth, three huge eggs.
Dany gasped. They were the most beautiful things she had ever seen, each different from the others, pattern in such rich colors that at first she thought they were crusted with jewels, and so large it took both of her hands to hold one.
She lifted it delicately, expecting that it would be made of some fine porcelain or delicate enamel, or even blown glass, but it was much heavier than that, as if it were all of solid stone.
The surface of the shell was covered with tiny scales, and as she turned the egg between her fingers, they shimmered like polished metal in the light of the setting sun.
One egg was a deep green, with burnished bronze flecks that came and went depending on how Dany turned it. Another was pale cream streaked with gold. The last was black, as black as a midnight sea, yet alive with scarlet ripples and swirls.
“What are they?” she asked, her voice hushed and full of wonder.
“Dragon’s eggs, from the Shadow Lands beyond Asshai,” said Magister Illyrio. “The eons have turned them to stone, yet still they burn bright with beauty.”
“I shall treasure them always.” Dany had heard tales of such eggs, but she had never seen one, nor thought to see one.
It was a truly magnificent gift, though she knew that Illyrio could afford to be lavish. He had collected a fortune in horses and slaves for his part in selling her to Khal Drogo.
