Some nights, when it was too lonely in his room, Neal snuck out the window and wandered the palace gardens. If he'd still been a page, he would've gotten weeks of punishment work, but he wasn't a page. He wasn't anything, anymore, just a boy with dreams too big to chase and hopes dashed by his own foolishness. Too old to be a knight, too old to be a mage. Too young to be a good noble. Too flighty to settle down, too afraid to even try. He wanded the moonlit paths of the garden, and regretted, with the leaves crunching under his feet and the stars glimmering above. He paused at the ponds that dotted the gardens, and looked at his reflection, but he didn't recognize the man he saw. He should've been a knight. He should've been a mage. He should've done something, anything, that would make his family proud. But he was here, crying silently in the gardens with only the plants for company, while his friends slept, and worked, and ate, working toward a goal he'd never wanted and never been able to achieve. Perched on a bench one night, clouds gathering in the sky above, he watched an owl soar among the towers of the castle, and he thought of Kel, with her iron will and her dreams of being a knight. He hoped she'd fly like the owl he saw, like the owl of her family's crest. He hoped they'd all fly, that they would find success where he couldn't. That they would become knights, and fight for Tortall, while he sat in the garden until he was indistinguishable from the plants.

more toned down, i think! less "i literally cannot imagine a life without you" and more "two stray cats that bonded and are not inseparable". i imagine that Frank & Julie were planning on living in the same town, but they wanted their own living spaces to do with as they please without having to compromise. i like to think that they got neighboring properties - or do they live in the same apartment / condo building? still thinking about everyone's living spaces...

and Yes! i like to adhere to canon as much as possible with my aus. i imagine that when they met in school Julie may have developed a crush on Frank, but has long since grown out of it. and she learned pretty quick that uh... hon... Frank's a lover of men <3

They met way before Hadestown through Michael and Rich and have since continued to cross paths with each other in various shows but this is their first major show as leads together and they make a damn good Orpheus and Eurydice because there is something there even though neither will quite admit it yet

ive been reading the samurai kirby novel test reads and oh Boy i am so so glad i called dibs on this novel ive been actively enjoying every second of it

tbh if theres like anyone Super looking forward to this novel, i recommend going in completely blind for a number of reasons. but to those who don't care here's some brief rambles

this novel has test reads published every week for a month like the rtdl novel, instead of just one test read about a week before the novel's release date like novels usually do. the rtdl novel i could excuse as being separate from the usual novels, but this is a bit odd. i guess im not complaining though, it means a lot more reading and content for me. currently there have been three test reads released so far

interestingly meta knight hasn't appeared yet, even though he seems to be super important from the synopsis and a duo with kirby for the book's major plot of retrieving the sword technique scroll

also related, the major plot of retrieving any sort of sword technique scroll has not even been remotely mentioned yet at this point

what has been mentioned, then? well first of all everyone lives under a brutal dictatorship. the lord of this place enforces strict and unreasonable laws and anyone who speaks ill of them are arrested. there's multiple occasions of characters freaking out and telling others to shut up in case the authority are secretly listening. according to a rumor from pharmacist scarfy and postman wheelie, dissenters also get taken from their houses at night and thrown into a dungeon never to be seen again, and that there were pained groans heard coming from the dungeon the other night.

its not stated but in my opinion this is definitely a kid friendly version of yeah the police totally torture and starve you. also the police are terrifying animated wooden mechanical puppets, said to be "bloodthirsty". anyways

the animal troupe is in fact this universe's version of beast pack. elfy and them are like a family in this and it makes me buckwild insane. leon acts like an overprotective dad

dedede has been mentioned. he's apparently a double agent against the evil lord and secretly protects everyone. actually really cool

meta knight has not been mentioned. magolor also hasn't been mentioned, but apart from being a sweets merchant he's also apparently a riverman, according to the character introductions.

clawroline wears a kimono. i love her. that's all i wanted to say with that

i was confused about this in my initial post about this novel but bandana waddle dee has been renamed to tenugui waddle dee in this novel, because he wears a tenugui (japanese hand towel) on his head instead of a bandana

oh yeah that brutal dictatorship thing i mentioned earlier? the main ongoing current conflict with that is that no one can eat dango or mochi because of it. that's literally the only thing anyone's mad about. who cares about having your rights being taken away if you can't have mochi i guess. very dreamland-core

anddd the town this takes place in is called pupupu machi (pupupu town) which im considering translating as cappy town, since Dream Town does not have a good ring to it. but i think Some anime haters would get Really upset if i called it cappy town so lol

Considering Mephisto's role and what happens to IK in the Roleswap AU... would it be wrong to say Mephisto was involved in some way with IK during those moments? Maybe finding out about IK beforehand (if she was a dissenter), either helping or forced to br antagonist during the fall, etc etc? Dunno just feel like that could vibe in that AU with what you said and I'm curious if I'm onto something or not :)

oh, well, who can say....

for real though - yes, he would've had a role. i believe the anon who first proposed a reason for ik's exile had her getting lost trying to find a star garden, and consequently breaking some kind of rule that warranted banishing

now this offence would have to be SEVERE, and ik isn't malicious enough to do it on purpose - and not hapless enough to somehow manage it by accident. the idea is thus: mephisto, having ears everywhere, was aware that ik had been asking a lot of questions of her supervisory angel, and that she had a track record for challenging whatever answer she got

sonno (who for all intents and purposes is a lot worse in this au than he is originally) doesn't like this, of course. plus it sets a dangerous precedent for her fellow fledglings, who might start repeating her sentiments - but he can't just get rid of what is essentially still a baby angel for no good reason

so here's the thing - it's pretty hard to get THAT lost in the celestial realm, especially since ik would've been restricted to a junior sector, which are small and easily navigable by design. thus: mephisto (or someone taking orders from him) suggested the trip to the star garden, and gave her the wrong directions

could be any number of things, from accidentally injuring a seraph to breaking artifact sealing some kind of apocalypse-level curse - pick your poison, the main thing is that the poor kid essentially gets puppeted into an infraction severe enough that sonno had an excuse to banish her

which of course ends up being both diavolo and mephisto's breaking point, since the former starts the rebellion after having to perform the exile, and the latter defects and joins him pretty much immediately. i do want to stress that this is sonno hitting the extremes here - he wasn't always this bad, but having such an obedient servant, he just got too comfortable with having someone to shut up anyone he didn't like
