I'm still loving Gotham Nocturne and I wish it was getting the love/respect/attention is deserves. I've spoken several people who haven't been reading the current Detective Comics run because they're Batmanned Out (good lord, do I get it) and they see it as just another attempt at some kind of "ultimate Batman story with Batman fighting the ultimate evil," which I strongly disagree with.
THAT SAID... as time has gone on, and the story seems to be reaching its finale, there are a few things that stand out of me as problems with this epic storyline.
1.) It's one of the most egregious examples of "writing for the trade paperback." This simply isn't a story that's meant to be read month-to-month. It's too slow, with too little "happening," at least on the superficial level. Paradoxically, it's NOT a story that should be binged! The best comparison that comes to mind is Better Call Saul, since that's the only other example of serialized media that's meticulously slow-paced yet INCREDIBLY RICH for those willing to engage with it on its level rather than expecting it to be Breaking Bad (or in Nocturne's case, a typical Batman story.) Ram V is capable of writing super-engaging monthly issues, as the fantastic Rare Flavours proves, but that brings us to...
2.) The story is sprawling. Maybe even TOO sprawling. When it comes to people who are sick of Batman, I try to sell them on the fact that this story is about GOTHAM AS A WHOLE, right down to the villains who call it home, and how everyone there is as intrinsically a part of Gotham as Batman is. But ensemble stories like that are tricky, and it makes the focus feel all over the place at times, with alternately too much and too little attention being paid to the main players, Batman included. It's a balance that was handled beautifully with Batman: The Audio Adventures, but it seems a bit more awkward here. Again, it's hard to pull off!
Like, we have characters pop up and then vanishing without explanation. We got Azrael back in the AzBats armor for the first time in decades, like, holy shit! That should be a HUGE development! And then, poof, he vanished! There's simply no time to explore Jean-Paul's character because there's so many other things the narrative needs to explore.
This feels like it would have really benefited from a companion series, something to focus on the characters the way the backup stories have done, but just more so. I think about how Peter Tomasi would write companion books to the main big storylines written by Geoff Johns, Grant Morrison, and Scott Snyder, and how he'd focus on character, which always enriched the greater "big important storyline." Which, in turn, also brings me to...
3.) The backup stories have really lost a lot of their punch since they stopped being written by Si Spurrier and were taken over by Dan Watters. Watters is incredibly capable, make no mistake, and his Cheshire/Lian Harper story is one of my favorite parts of this entire saga. But by and large, his tales focus more on the spooky and weird sides of what's happening with Nocturne, whereas Spurrier's stories were more focused on characters navigating the weirdness of the events. As a result, Spurrier gave us what I consider to be some of the very best stories about Jim Gordon, Harvey Dent, and Victor Fries ever written. I really miss those, and how they enriched Ram V's (possibly overly-ambitious) narrative.
Ultimately, Gotham Nocturne feels like the Batman equivalent to an arthouse film, which means it's going to be appreciated by a handful of nerds while leaving most other fans cold, and I can't really blame them. If anything makes me sad about all this, it's how all this incredible character work with Bruce, Harvey, Victor, Talia, and others is going to be ignored. Hell, it already is, given the complete lack of acknowledgement we've seen in other Bat-books for what's going on in Nocturne.
At this point, I just hope it sticks the landing in the finale, because I want to be able to have a complete, satisfying epic to recommend to people who want something a bit richer than the typical "guy in Bat costume punches clown" stories we usually get.

see if i was to write “what if azbats was batman forever” i wouldn’t have them be addicted to venom and running a police state and keeping bruce alive and vivisected in a tower i would make it metaphorical through body horror where jp and azrael are permanently fused or grafted to the final armored version of the azbats suit and regardless of any personal growth they experience they’ll always be trapped in that spiny metal and spandex cocoon, the perverted symbol, unable to ever shed that isolating skin or stop exuding the fear azrael designed it to strike. the claws that make them unable to touch without care. seeing the world through the night vision visor they can never take off. and so on.

We're getting back into the good shit now. Vic's back in action, Renee is written by Greg Rucka for the first time, Helena and Vic meet, Blue Beetle is here...
Azrael Plus The Question
Vic's been playing poker. Lots of opportunities to wander around and get into trouble while keeping him retired from heroing and from journalism, it works for him.
Oops All Daddy Issues.
I like how low key this is, despite everything. Vic and Jean-Paul are weird dudes with a lot of problems and that's on full display.
Green Lantern #81
Another cameo that's only notable because I have no clue why Vic would be here. He has literally never met Hal Jordan, how did he get an invite. He's even standing off to the back instead of sitting with everyone else.
The Question Returns
The river emissary is conceptually a lot better than any of the other supernatural takes on the Question. The idea that Vic's death in the river would make his conscience literally haunt him is interesting, and it being questionably supernatural is more to my taste. Making the river a magical harmonica-playing old black man was not a great choice though.
Vic describing Tot as "an ex-father figure" makes me want to implode.
"these auditory hallucinations are getting on my nerves" BIG mood.
Vic is a mess. He can't go home, he can't stay away, he's shifted from Vic Sage the hard-hitting journalist to Vic Sage the laid-back poker player but he hasn't been able to change the Question. This is why he takes up so much space in my brain.
Even after he left he still held on to his love for Myra and Hub City, and this is where he can't do it anymore. He will never see her again. Godddddddd.
Steel #38
I hadn't read this one before, and I'm glad I'm reading it now, because it's great. I gotta get into Steel eventually.
Vic declares himself teammates with John and then immediately splits up and gets his shit wrecked. Maybe let the guy with power armor protect you next time.
This wandering gambler era is fun, I wish it had lasted a little longer. There are so many interesting places Vic could pop up with poker incidents as an excuse, it's the perfect way to keep him around without him having anything specific going on.
A World for Burning (Tec #714-715)
Calling her a supporting character is maybe a stretch but she gets to talk to Martian Manhunter so I'm counting it.
A fun little mystery story.
Cataclysm
Vic interlude is over, time for events.
I like Cataclysm quite a bit. It's heavy on the cop shit and some of the issues are just not good, but I think the earthquake makes for a better citywide event than any of the "oh no it's the Joker" ones, and everyone involved really gets to shine.
Once again I am forced to admit I like when Cluemaster shows up. Steph saving her dad from Helena despite everything is a strong moment.
Random Encounters (Batman Chronicles #14)
OH NO. Ohhhh no. Strap in folks it's time for her to become a main character.
Renee talks to her brother about his guilt over killing when he was in the Navy, and she uses Two-Face's coin to make her point about randomness and how right and wrong aren't simple, which. Hhhhh.
Apparently she shot a guy who was trying to kill Two-Face, and got the coin in return.
Sorry but Renee flipping the coin and making decisions based on the outcome fucking annihilates me and I cannot BELIEVE I hadn't read this before now.
This isn't even a comic it's a short story. Eight pages of Rucka setting up the dominoes.
An Answer in the Rubble (Batman Chronicles #15)
VIC AND HELENA BABYYYY
Self-recognition through the other (annoying)
His anime hair???
I love them so much.
Road to No Man's Land
Sorry but the Bruce Wayne political drama is ridiculous even by my standards. Gotham would be the second-largest city in the US today, or one of the top 5 if the "7 million" is the city and surrounding area, you cannot tell me it would get totally cut off. Screwed by inadequate relief? Sure. Wiped off the map? Lol no.
Okay fine it's the devil. The devil did it. Comic books.
L.A.W.
We've been in Gotham long enough, time to go do Some Bullshit!
This is in continuity, but it ignores all of Vic's canon post-Charlton - he's a newscaster working with Nora from the Ditko run, Hub City is Ted's home city but not his, he's characterized pretty much how he was in Charlton and those few Blue Beetle crossovers post-Crisis... the other heroes seem a little more up-to-date but they're all still kind of janky.
Wow this does not do a good job making me care about any of these characters.
The plot is mostly racist and/or nonsense and most of it bounced right off my brain despite repeated readings.
Honestly I'm here for Ted more than Vic. He's going through it.
I do like the framing device of Vic writing his report in the final issue. The real treasure was the friends we made along the way.

New Batman stuff!
Getting to some new characters seems to be my fun time!
So the first one is pretty obvious, Azrael comes to say hello! There is obviously a BIG BIG influence and vibe from Arkham Knight concept art (i.e the pose).
—> What I changed : I did the classic red shape on his mask, traded the more military aspect of the concept art for a more medieval look (more leather baby), added armor on his tights and that’s it!
Now story-wise I need to see how he fits into all this? I don’t honestly know much about him outside from Knightfall, but that storyline goes through a lot of changes in my conception of the events so we’ll see 🤫
And for the next one, less obvious I think is Lady Shiva!
A pretty straightforward design in comparison to the others but it does the job I think! I tried to lean more into Chinese rather than Japanese for her look. Not much else to say…
She will be a big player early on in Batman’s story, I think there are some interesting ramifications to study with the league but even more so with Talia I think… 🤔

Beware the Bat character drop: Azrael
Tumblr media
Voiceclaim/Fancast: Joe Keery
Tumblr media
Jean-Paul Valley's origins are rooted in a lineage of assassins associated with the secret society known as the Order of St. Dumas. After the murder of his father, Jean-Paul is thrust into the mantle of Azrael, a mystical and formidable warrior.
As Azrael, Jean-Paul is granted enhanced strength, agility, and combat skills, augmented further by a high-tech suit of armor. Initially a reluctant and conflicted hero, Jean-Paul's journey takes a significant turn when he assumes the role of Batman after Bruce Wayne's supposed death. However, his methods become increasingly brutal and excessive, leading to a clash with the original Dark Knight upon his return.

ANOTHER EARTH, FILE 001 – BATMAN
Circa 1996-2003 – ‘BRUCE WAYNE’S TERRIBLE HORRIBLE NO-GOOD VERY BAD DECADE’
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The turn of the century is bad for everybody in a world where there’s a new catastrophe every week, but for Batman especially, this is a rough stretch. To this point, all of the despotic alien dictators and insane transdimensional imps have been haranguing Superman, up the coast in Metropolis, But in 1996, the Thanagarian Invasion of Earth occurs, and the Justice League is shaken to is very core. In 1997, Grayson trades up to Nightwing, and Bruce takes on a new Robin, the young Jason Todd, who is definitely going to be fine don’t worry about it.
This'un is a doozy, truly comic-tier explanation below the cut.
In 1998, shit hits the fan for Batman specifically. Surprise! The Joker kills Jason Todd while perpetrating a scheme outside of the US, right as Bruce and Jason are on the cusp of truly bonding as father and son. A couple months later, the Joker reappears in Gotham and cripples Barbara Gordon, then-Batgirl and also the daughter of Commissioner James Gordon, one of Batman’s staunchest allies. The Joker’s sudden and somewhat inexplicable slide from dangerous, but goofy, crime gimmicks into genuine stochastic terrorism sets off a chain reaction amongst Gotham’s gallery of rogues. In 1999, at around the one-year-mark of Jason’s death, Tim Drake convinces Bruce to accept him as the new Robin after reverse-engineering Batman’s secret identity.
And in 2000, a new and dangerous foe emerges to challenge Batman, self-styled as Batman’s greatest foe – his bane, if you will. It’s Bane. And Bane breaks the bat. During Bruce’s recovery period, he selects Azrael to fill in for him. Azrael, as an unstable zealot at the best of times, ultimately defeats Bane but also does real damage to Bruce’s personal sphere; between the death of Robin II and Bruce choosing to keep his infirmity a secret from his coworkers in the Justice League and subsequent confusion around just who was in the bat-suit during this period, Batman’s reputation takes a substantial black eye at every level, and Bruce starts to cut himself off from friends and family.
In 2002, a massive earthquake hits the United States’ eastern seaboard, with the epicenter just barely offshore of Gotham City. The city is plunged into absolute chaos due to extreme structural damage to a huge portion of Gotham’s downtown area; the island on which most of the city is built is cut off from the mainland, and the federal government evacuates about 75% of Gotham’s civilian population. The remaining 25% of civilians are basically left to die, as the government declares Gotham City a federal No-Man’s Land, locking down its border. Warring supervillain factions and desperate militarized police forces are eventually brought to heel… by Bane, who takes over Gotham in the confusion.
Bruce returns to Gotham with Catwoman and finally defeats Bane personally, bringing an expanded Bat-Family to bear and restoring his public image. He also internalizes, finally, the value of relying on other people. He takes a liking to the new Batgirl who emerges during this trial, Cassandra Cain, and formally establishes ties to Stephanie Brown (briefly Robin, currently Spoiler). Simultaneously, Lex Luthor leverages a metric fuck-ton of political influence to get Gotham’s borders reopened, using the positive publicity to get a pardon of past crimes from the President and undetake a Senatorial campaign.
The suit reflects how utterly fucked Batman’s life is during this period of time. Battered, frayed, with armor plating literally strapped on where old pieces have been damaged or torn off. The tech boom resulting from the Thanagarian Invasion has begun to hit every layer of civilian life at this point, which means villains are starting to get more and crazier gadgets and Batman is forced to keep up. Stylistically it takes inspiration from late-80s/early-90s Batman suits; it’s also the debut of my solution to the costume boyshorts ‘problem’ (I don’t necessarily think it’s a problem, mind you) – Thigh highs!

It was a deep crimson painted with soft, purring black cats, and was crafted by the finest weaver in the mill. The weaver, besotted with her beauty, professed his love to the maiden. Indifferent to his advances, she preferred the warmth of her feline finery to his, leading him down a dark path that separates the woman from one of her beloved black cats! Thus, the cat begins a fantastic voyage, from the bottom of the sea to the smokey markets of London, sometimes in the company of Sherlock Holmes himself, as he becomes a figure of myth and legend.
Travel the world on this surreal journey through the imagination of renowned artist Nancy Peña (Madame Cat), whose gorgeous style is inspired by Japanese painting.

Unended GN - Josh Bayer
What prevents you from finishing your life's work? Josh Bayer finds a manuscript of an unfinished play inside his deceased father's desk. The play tells the story of Josh's mother's early death (age 37) and his father's struggle with single parenthood. When he attempts to adapt the play into comics, it triggers a series of personal crises. Bayer's limitations and futile ambitions are brought into sharp relief as he grapples with an estranged, unknowable parent and the play's frustrating lack of resolution. Humans worship lore, myth, and fables, but many people's creative dreams become abandoned. Why? Josh Bayer stitches scattered memories into surrealistic episodes permeated with dream logic. Unended is a Promethean quest to excavate the creative fire hidden inside us.
Whatcha scooping up this week to kick off November, Fantom Fam?

5 Fighters for Gotham Knights
Hello and welcome back to House of Milesverse. It has been a while since I made a post. However, the release of October’s Gotham Knights has given me an idea.
Today, I want to show you five members of the Batfamily who I would love to see in the game. There are so many characters that could make it. However, these five seem like they would be the most fun, and most popular to showcase.
Before I put together the list, I think it is fair that I explain what Gotham Knights is.
WHAT IS GOTHAM KNIGHTS?
If you have not heard, Gotham Knights is an action role-playing game for the Xbox Series X, Windows PC, and the Playstation 5. The game centers on the aftermath of Batman’s death. Without him, Gotham is unable to protect itself, and criminals overrun the city.
Thus, various allies of Batman aim to protect Gotham and restore justice to the city. In addition, Batman’s allies aim to investigate the mysteries surrounding his death and the enigmatic Court of Owls.
PLAYABLE CHARACTERS
Perhaps the most fun thing about Gotham Knights is the variety of playstyle. Many Batman fans love having numerous characters to choose from. In addition, each character feels different on their own.
So far, the playable choices are:
The first Robin, Nightwing.
Commissioner Gordon’s daughter, Batgirl.
The second Robin, and Outlaw member, Red Hood.
The third Robin, Tim Drake.
I like the roster, but I think Gotham Knights can go further with characters. There’s still a decent chunk of Batfamily members who should join the game. I have put together a list of some of these members who I personally believe should join the game.
NUMBER FIVE: Huntress’ crossbow gives her some range.
Sure, Huntress is probably not the first person you think of for this game. However, I think she does count as a member of the Batfamily. In fact, I believe she was a part of Batman’s circle during the 90s and late 2000s.
As a playable character, Huntress would be fierce and ruthless in combat. She’s more violent than Batman, and he’s even had to restrain her a few times. Her main weapon would be her crossbow, which helps to give her some range in combat.
I think Helena’s ferocity could give her an interesting position on the team. Jason Todd is also labeled the ‘violent one’ by fans. You could have them both interact and bounce off of each other. In addition, it also gives fans the chance to see more interactions between Helena and Batgirl. The two of them were a part of the Birds of Prey, and this is even referenced in the game with a photo.
NUMBER FOUR: Batwing brings a whole different style to the gameplay.
Batwing is an alias that was first used by David Zavimbe, the ‘Batman of Africa’. It was later taken up by Luke Fox, son of Lucius Fox, who helps provide Batman’s gear.
Regarding gear, Batwing has a different costume than the others. He has a more armored combat suit, sort of like Iron Man. He’s able to glide and maneuver through the air thanks to his cape. You could give him the ability to fly and have that be his maneuver option. Imagine how cool it would be to see Gotham from the skies.
NUMBER THREE: Azrael’s just too cool to not be included.
Azrael’s well-remembered as being the temporary replacement for Batman in Knightfall. What some people do not know is that story was made to make fun of the 90s. However, Azrael is still a fan favorite, and his appearances always bring much applause.
I think seeing how Azrael could interact with the rest of the cast could be fun. In particular, I would like to see him, and Dick Grayson develop a cool dynamic. When it comes to fighting, Azrael brings a particularly interesting set of weapons to the game. He wields dual wrist blades that can also set on fire. Azrael’s just too cool to not add to the game.
NUMBER TWO: This is the Signal for Duke Thomas to join the game.
I feel like Duke Thomas is one of the least popular Bat family members. Or, at least, he’s one of the ones who’s least talked about. Despite that, I think he’s proven that he’s worthy of being a part of the family.
I like Duke Thomas’ potential purely when it comes to mechanics. Duke’s photokinetic abilities could prove a challenge for developers to use. He can “see” light, where it has gone, and where it is going. This also enables him to predict the movements of enemies.
Apparently in Batman and The Outsiders, Duke Thomas also developed shadow abilities. Pooling from both shadow and light powers gives Duke a lot of variety to use. It also could give him a few unique mobility options, such as vanishing into the shadows or teleporting like light.
NUMBER ONE: Damian Wayne’s popularity is just too much.
For fans of the Bat Family, Damian Wayne is a must-have among others. He’s one of the most popular Robins. In addition, he is also the biological child of Batman and Talia Al’Ghul. This makes him an heir to the Demon, Ra’s himself, and the Wayne family.
As a fighter, Damian Wayne’s signature weapon could be the sword. You could give him a few cool combos on slicing and dicing his enemies. You could also have him make use of birdarangs as well.
If there were any reason to add Damian Wayne, it would be to see the dynamic he shares with Tim Drake and Dick Grayson. In particular, I think Damian is Dick’s Robin, and they could be seen as brothers. You could have Damian also have some growing animosity toward Tim. In fact, you could play them both as archenemies who later learn to work together.
CONSENSUS: Gotham Knights is an awesome experience
Gotham Knights is an awesome experience for long-time Batman fans. Even though you do not get to play as Batman himself, you get to use his supporting cast. All of them have various quirks and mechanics that make them memorable and cool.
For fans of the open-world genre, Gotham Knights offer a beautiful version of Gotham that’s always active. You can run around the city for as long as you want.
As a game, there is just no limit to what Gotham Knights can do. You and your friend can enjoy playing as one of Batman’s legacies. I truly hope that the game gets more content added to it. I would love it if one of these characters ends up joining the game as well.

Into your hands
As Cassandra and Azrael continued to battle. The current batgirl was able to knock down her opponent. Bringing the man once thought to be the next Batman, down to his knees infront of a funeral pyre of his own making. Absent mindedly the former assassin picked up the holy man’s sword. “Well. Looks like everything fell perfectly into place.”
Those words seemingly snapped Cassandra out of her rage. She looked around and saw a very similar image. She was holding a sword, a man she despised was on their knees across from him, and she had the perfect opportunity to. “Kill me.” Jean said causing the batgirls eyes to dilate.
Flashbacks to when her father gave her the exact same order. Her detective vision became filled with twisted mixtures of the abuse her father gave her and the current situation she was in. Her mind echoing the words. “Kill. Kill. Do what you were born to do. SAVE THIS CITY!”
“AAAAAAAGGHHHHHH!” Cassandra roared as she raised the sword above her head. Fully intending to kill Azrael there on the spot. When her swing was stopped at it’s apex, looking back she found Red Hood having caught the blade. Holding it even with the fire burning off it. “You don’t have to do this.”
Those simple words made Cassandra’s mind fully clear up. Her grip immediately loosened off the blade, allowing it to be pulled away from her grip. “It’s ok. This asshole has been causing-“ Red Hood was cut short by a gunshot ringing out and something striking his body armor.
The source of this bullet was Azrael who now stood holding a rather old looking fire arm. “Is that a fucking flintlock pistol?” The second Robin questioned before the possible second Batman lunged at him. The two grappling and striking eachother with Cassandra just standing in awe struck.
Her heart was pounding in her ears, her body was trembling, her head was spinning as her entire world just began tumbling around her. She was so overwhelmed by the tranquilizer and her trauma she could barley think. But her body began moving without her input.
The autopilot Batgirl jumping over and tackling Azrael off of Red Hood and sending both herself and her foe out of a nearby window. Jason looking out to see the two now fighting in the yard. “Red Hood to Oracle. Cass is ok for the most part. But we need a fire team and possibly more backup.”
“You had the opportunity to return to your greatness and you threw it away. Foolish damn child!” Azrael shouted as he got his hands around Cassandra’s throat. Batgirl groaning something under her breath. “What was that?” The literal caped crusader questioned looking at the girl he once fancied his pupil.
“Got you.” With that Cassandra took one of her fingers and jabbed it into Azraels throat, Jaune falling over and coughing. Before he was swiftly knocked out by a swift kick to the side of his head.
“Sweet. Fucking. Jesus.” Cassandra groaned as she fell over. Her body having fully lost any bits of adrenaline she had.

me when my mutual tells me to do something 🫡
jean-paul valley + some azrael cycles talk under the cut for length. jesus.
anyway my thoughts are a little disjointed but the concept of an endless cycle of creation and destruction (what the ouroboros can symbolize) came to mind when i was talking about the way jean-paul has like, 4 counts of the destruction and recreation of his selfhood. you have sword of azrael 1992 which barely introduces us to him before the system is activated and he’s made aware of his place in this cycle of violence and death, he forgets his own name as a result of his dissociation at one point, but when azrael acts as a rescuer he remembers (my name is jean-paul valley. that was my father’s name too) and is set up for knightfall and associated arcs, where he’s still confused and lost in the matters of the self and fills that void of personality with batman.
that in and of itself goes through phases of getting worse and getting better but ultimately becomes a death spiral in which jean-paul attempts to replace himself entirely with the brutal, armored war machine, righteous avenger batman-that-is-also-azrael — another persona that’s created — only to be destroyed again when he faces off with bruce and bruce reclaims the mantle, the symbol, the spirit of the bat.
then jean-paul spends time building himself up after batman, which is kiiind of destroyed again when he discovers his origin as having been genetically enhanced with “animal fluid”, and spends days in a dissociative state where he can barely speak. its ultimately azrael’s developing role as guardian which brings jean-paul back to building himself up, but the self he’s built is destroyed again when he discovers a terminal illness. he returns to azbats, but is brought out of it again - a chance to build himself back up, but then he’s killed, and he dies. and he’s brought back as a black lantern.
and then the new 52 happens. he’s alive again. he goes through another pseudo-knightfall arc. and sword of azrael 2022, where he finally begins to approach azrael as his own, traumatized person, just as stuck in the cycle of violence as he is. but now it seems he’s back on the decline.
constantly being destroyed and created and destroyed and created again in an endless cycle that has to do with the cycle the order of st. dumas’ abuse has he and azrael trapped in. constantly trying hard to break free but never quite succeeding. and every time he’s close to it he’s destroyed again. sometimes even dying about it.
and some/quite a bit of it has to do with his actions and choices. his own struggle to acknowledge his own anger isn’t all azrael. his struggle to channel his yearning for strength and acceptance into something that doesn’t put himself and others at risk, though a lot of that can also be pinned on his abuse as well.
it’s so. it’s. it is. !!! it’s!!!!! it’s sooooooo 😆!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
