I NEED YOU ALL TO UNDERSTAND HOW IMPORTANT THIS IS. That this isn't an actual conversation between Bruce and Dick, but instead a scene Bruce's mind conjures up when a demon is stalking around inside of him, eating his most precious thoughts/memories that his mind is using to anchor him, that when Bruce needs a place to turn to for strength, he thinks of his father standing with him on the docks of Gotham Bay, sharing a treat, telling him that the point of all this can't just be about justice or vengeance, it has to be about more than that. Which leads Bruce's body to immediately shuffle to the Haly's Circus grounds, where his mind thinks of the young boy that he took in, the boy who understood him, his son, that this vision is just as important as the one of his father, the memory that drove him to be Batman in the first place, the presence of his son is just as important. And that vision says that he doesn't need to be in the dark like Bruce did, because Bruce saved him. This is Bruce's place of comfort. The memory of his father. The memory of his son. This is what more is to him, beyond justice, beyond vengeance, this is what drives Bruce Wayne to keep fighting--that Dick Grayson is that more to this to him. It has to be about standing there with a kid next to you, sharing a moment, eating ice cream, watching the sun set, watching a show, just letting the moment be. The holy memory of Thomas Wayne tells Bruce that he needs more and he immediately seeks out Dick Grayson and the place that drew him and his son together, that it was a moment of tragedy, a moment of "deathly comfort", but even in that moment, even in Bruce's own mind, Dick Grayson tells him that he's not made of the dark, because he had Bruce. This is where Bruce's mind turns in this desperate hour, when his soul is under siege--to the memory of his father, then to the vision of his son, because his is what gives him strength. This is what gives him more than just justice or vengeance, this is what his bigger purpose is about. And that's why the demon eats those thoughts first, because when you take Dick Grayson away from Bruce Wayne, that's when he falls into the worst darknesses of his life.

So I edited the text out of here. I just really like the panel layout of this one. And the colors! The colors of Absolute are just GREAT! And the lines are so solid! Basically everything about Absolute is great! Actually, all of the back-up stories for Gotham Nocturne are fantastic. I don't care if you read Gotham Nocturne itself, all of the back-up stories thus far have been excellent and you should read it for the back-up stories alone! Just look at how pretty and solid the art is here! (Even if there isn't a background here specifically.)

Note: for this list, let’s believe Bruce was living in an (admittedly expensive and swanky) dorm because it is required for first-years, especially those entering at a young age, and Alfred told him he needed to make friends. Also yes I did every single thing on this list. I never claimed to be a role model

Bruce, to his TA: I’m so sorry I’m late to class. I gave blood a few hours ago and almost fainted on the way here, but it won’t happen again.

Signs up for a class called “Age of Dinosaurs” despite it not being required whatsoever and proceeds to work his entire schedule around it

Bruce: Your mental health is super important. If you think you should see the on-campus therapist, go see them. Friend: Fine. I’ll sign up for therapy if you sign up for therapy too. Bruce: Hold on-

Finds a loophole in his housing contract that allows him to get a pet frog, calls him kermit :)

Gets a second frog because Kermit was lonely, names it Constantine after Muppets Most Wanted, then realizes that they’re gay for each other. Wonders if the rainbow-colored rocks he got them triggered anything

Swings dramatically between calling Alfred every single day and ghosting him for weeks, cries when he realizes what he did

“Accidentally” joins the student body council, doesn’t know what he’s doing, gets re-elected anyway

Comic book fans: Gotham Nocturne is so slow and boring! And I just don't get what the Orgham's plan is! Or why Batman is trying to stop them!

People with actual taste: Gentrification. The story is entirely about gentrification. And if you don't understand that or why Bruce wants to stop that, then this whole story is just not for you. :/

Just saying. Like, I absolutely get why Gotham Nocturne might not be to your taste. I absolutely agree with you that it's been one hell of a slow burn type of story! It's not really a story for action comic fans. But that's why it's in Detective Comics and not the pages of Batman! Ram V clearly has an artistic vision that he is pursuing for this storyline! You may not like the artistic vision, and it may not be to your tastes, but DAYMN you've gotta respect the vision! It's not going to be a story for everyone. Especially not the stereotypical cis, straight, white, neurotypical, able-bodied man that people imagine reads comics. But for those of us who aren't that and get the artistic vision just... DAYMN is it a treat for us! So it continues to utterly baffle me whenever I come across reviews of Gotham Nocturne that clearly don't understand what Ram V is doing and complain about it. It may not be for you, but everyone I talk to who has been keeping up with it has been LOVING it!!!
