okay but do you understand. do you UNDERSTAND. every time basil talks about dorian it's in paragraphs upon paragraphs, art metaphors and historical references and mythical embellishments, adoration in every word and worship in every breath, in every moment, from very beginning to his very end, playing his role in the book much like romeo, like juliet, the lover, the romantic, even as dorian turns from him and falls into corruption and mars basil's- basil's!- portrait, basil is always the same character in the same role in the same play and YET. AND YET!! when dorian kills him there is nothing. there is half a paragraph with no flare, no art, only the grotesque nature of what's been done, of basil's twitching arms and limp body. basil leaves the narrative in an instant, becoming only a 'thing', referenced in only past tense and considerations as to dorian's crime. dorian will repeat lord henry's words, of the beauty of a death for love such as sibyl's, yet in the face of this he can offer nothing! nothing but calm and the unnerving nature of basil's body and plans to dispose of the 'thing' and no thought at all to how basil will now rise to haunt the narrative, always there but never in the manner that dorian was for him and DO YOU UNDERSTAND "all that blood was never once beautiful. It was just red." basil's gone and everything is red!!!!!

sometimes i see pictures of places I used to live taken when i used to live there and get all I Miss You...... but babe i was a child and MISERABLE

#this is about hashtag lisbon mostly but also porto #i miss you (no i dont)(three bedroom apartment)(13 people sharing)(height of summer) #but also(basil in all the windowsills to stop the flies)(sleeping in a pile next to all my siblings) #(going to the park with the weeping willows and my mom giving us all 1 chupachup)(feeling like a person again after a year at Real School) #(the texture of tiles on the wall)(the murals)(the graffiti)(the river)(sat in a shop and the shopkeep telling me about ceramics in broken #english)(her helping me draw patterns & letting me mix a blue glaze)(the colour of the river and sky)(the heat radiating off the pavement) #(my siblings laugh)(the feeling of being surrounded in a language you barely speak and then understanding something) #(the feeling of joy of having someone try to understand you)(the freckles on my arms)(being told i look like my aunt) #(pretending to drive the hello kitty car in the mall until they stopped letting people go inside it)(many more such memories) #(and it aches) #but i dont miss it (only when i buy basil)(it doesnt grow in this climate)(our house now smells like rosemary) #(and those kids dont call me sister anymore)
