⚔️Three Houses of Edain⚔️
A little over three centuries after the Noldor had returned to Middle-earth, Finrod discovered a new people in the glens of the Blue Mountains. These were Men out of the distant East of Middle-earth, the first of their kind to be seen in Beleriand. These Men crossed the mountains as three distinct peoples, but each of these peoples became allies of the Elves in the Wars of Beleriand. The name Edain became associated with these friends of the Elves, and their leaders gave rise to three houses: those of Bëor, Haleth and Hador.
Tumblr media
House of Bëor
Bëor was the first of Men to cross the Blue Mountains into Beleriand, and his house is thus considered the first of the houses of the Edain. Bëor himself became a vassal of Finrod, and many of his descendants also served the Elves. Later generations of this house held the land of Dorthonion, until it was lost to Morgoth in the Dagor Bragollach. The greatest of the heroes of the House of Bëor was Beren, who escaped from Dorthonion and captured a Silmaril from Morgoth's crown.
Tumblr media
House of Haleth
The people known as the Haladin spoke their own language, alien to that of the other Edain. They were the second house of Men to cross the Mountains, and settled for a while in the southern part of Dor Caranthir. Faced with a sudden assault by Orcs, they united under a leader named Haldad, but he was slain defending his people. His daughter Haleth, from whom this house took its name, led the survivors into the west, until they reached the Forest of Brethil, where they settled. This house of the Edain is noted for their friendship with the Drúedain, with whom they shared their forest home.
Tumblr media
House of Hador
The Third House of the Edain derived from the followers of Marach, who led his people across the Blue Mountains soon after the other houses. The Men of this House built a strong alliance with Fingolfin's people in Hithlum. Indeed, Marach's great-great-grandson Hador was made Lord of Dor-lómin by the High King of the Noldor, thus giving his name to this renowned House. Among Hador's famous descendants were Húrin and Huor, Túrin and Tuor, and Eärendil the Mariner.
“Do you forget to whom you speak? Such things you spoke long ago to our fathers; but we escaped from your shadow. And now we have knowledge of you, for we have looked on the faces that have seen the Light, and heard the voices that have spoken with Manwe."
~ Húrin Thalion in The Children of Húrin, "The Words of Húrin and Morgoth"

I ship every canonical Tolkien couple - except Aerin & Brodda, Aredhel & Eöl, and Tar-Míriel & Ar-Pharazôn. Those poor ladies deserved so much better than those pathetic a-holes.
(I also kinda think Melian could’ve done better than Thingol.)
These are the “non-canonical” Tolkien pairings that I ship, since nobody asked.
Frodo x Sam (it’s literally canon, period, forget the “non-canonical” category, it’s right there, it’s real)
Frodo x Sam x Rosie (Sam being shared during that year in Bag End; also all but spelled out)
Bilbo x Thorin (obviously; even in the book, it’s subtextual, but it’s THERE)
Fingon x Maedhros (Beren/Lúthien + Frodo/Sam parallels are no joke; yes yes i know i know they’re first cousins and that should be a dealbreaker, and for a while it was for me, but technically they’re HALF-cousins, they only share one grandparent, and it’s not like they can procreate together, so it’s very different from what it would be if one of them was female, also their story is inherently tragic and I think their being related adds to that)
Túrin x Beleg (also, obviously; i mean Túrin only thought he loved Níniel because he felt some kind of connection with her but misinterpreted it in his desperation to get over Beleg)
Finrod x Bëor (yes, Finrod loved Amarië too, and they definitely got their well-deserved happily ever after when Finrod was re-embodied…BUT look at what Bëor did for Finrod and how Finrod lost Bëor to mortality but then laid down his life for Bëor’s descendant; the angst is just too juicy to ignore)
I do not ship Merry and Pippin at all; not only are they full blooded first cousins, but since Merry is an only child and Pippin only has sisters, they very clearly fill that “brother” role in each other’s lives.
After a lot of thought, I’ve decided that queerplatonic Legolas/Gimli makes the most sense to me. They also fill the “brother” role in each other’s lives since they both have no blood siblings. I understand why many people do ship them romantically/sexually, but the thought of anything sexual between them just doesn’t feel right to me, personally. Even the thought of kisses just doesn’t seem to fit them, IMO; they’re about mutual respect and sharing quality time, rather than anything physical. To me they exemplify “heterosexual life partners” perfectly.

Finrod and the Edain
And I returned to my beautiful city
Black skies change into blue
And though my love is so wise and so pretty
Some nights I'll still dream of you

For the Pride month requests...can I nominate my favorite boys, Finrod & Bëor? 🏳️‍🌈
Yes you can!
They´re precious♡
Tumblr media
I always found Finrods easygoing personality exciting but also creepy. I don´t think any human would stand a chance if they woke up with an otherworldly creature singing for them, sure a bit fearful perhaps but the guy did enchant them so... we´re all happy Beor forgave him.
🏳️‍🌈CELEBRATE PRIDE WITH ME🏳️‍🌈 - send in a character or a ship with a pride flag and I´ll draw it

Elves react to men's sleeping habits
Tumblr media
AN: Clearing out ages-old drafts.
Summary: Interviews return~
PSA: No elf or man was harmed during these interviews.
Tumblr media
Interviewer: So slangry...(reads from the notes) sleepy and angry. Care to elaborate?
Aegnor: (Still recovering from the last interview) Yep, first she would not go to sleep and then fervently insist that her annoyance at my mere breathing is justified (riled up hand gestures 🤌)
Andreth: (criminal offense side eye) No that is incorrect 🧐☝🏻
Interviewer: I do not think you get a sa-
Andreth: I can decide when I require sleep. Thank you very much (glares at the camera).
Aegnor: Come on darling the land of dreams awaits you (coaxing riled-up Edain)
Tumblr media
Finrod: We've had conversations. You see men sleep so wonderfully. Beor simply responds to everything. We've planned parties, dinners, vacations...
Interviewer, side-eyeing Beor:
Finrod: And Beor remembers everything perfectly alright. Isn't it sweet?
Beor sweating buckets while motioning the interviewer to stop.
Interviewer: That is...unu-
Beor, steering Finrod away from the studio: That is absolutely nothing unusual, my love. Men sleep with their eyes closed so they can listen better. See that is why I absolutely remember everything we plan.
Beor in fact did not recollect anything. Further reports reveal that the man in question is an avid fan of avoiding planning anything. The said elf and man had words after the interview.
Tumblr media
Idril: And then he just jerked awake. Earendil screeched loud enough to wake the entire city.
Tuor: It was just once! (exasperated)
Interviewer: What did you dream? (sipping tea)
Tuor: I fell...(looks away). I was falling...
Interviewer, picking up their notes: Falling from where?
Tuor: It was a normal dream until I was falling off Turgon's shoulders...But hey it is a great height! He's got nice shoulders tho (smiles awkwardly).
Turgon's shoulder rides continue to be Earendil exclusive. Much to entire Gondolin's dismay.
Tumblr media
Thranduil: It is beautiful.
Bard: Stop it! (Blushing madly). My snoring is not beautiful.
Interviewer, over the pda: 👁️👄👁️
Thranduil: It just proves how hard you work beloved (pinching Bard's cheeks). It's like purring but elevated.
Audience facepalms
Gushing continued for 5 hours after the studio closed.
Tumblr media
Interviewer: Turin, are you a big spoon or a little spoon?
Turin: (gritting his teeth) I'm a knife.
Interviewer:
Turin: (glares back)
Beleg, smiling blindingly: He's a little spoon 🤭

Something that's been on my mind. I'm not sure if it's in the book, but in the Hobbit movies, Beorn says that he remembers when a "darker evil ruled these lands" and pretty much confirms he's talking about Sauron a few lines later. And even if that's a throwaway movie line, I'd like is to be canon because the implications are very funny. Because that implies that he's been around for at least like, 3000 years. I feel like we should be talking about this more. Do all skinchangers live that long or is it just Beorn? Was Beorn around for like, the Silmarillion?? Are skinchangers like a whole separate species or are they just humans, and if they're humans, are they born that way or does something happen to them??? If I, a normal human, could live 3000+ years and turn into a bear I'd be all over that shit. Also how are they brought up nowhere else in the Legendarium??? You'd think that someone would've noticed a sizeable group of extremely tall buff people who turn into bears. If they were around during the First Age Finrod absolutely would've befriended them is all I'm saying.
Then again, maybe he did, I've seen theories that the Beorians were skinchangers floating around before. Hell, Maybe Beorn is Beor and he just retired out of the historical narrative after a while. Sure gives a new meaning to them calling him "the Old."

New headcanon: the elves of Valinor don't have a Yule/winter solstice or any other season-related holidays, because there isn't really a sharp contrast between seasons in Aman and the Treelight means that all days are the same length.
However. The Edain and other groups of humans do have Yule or other winter solstice holidays, and they end up passing their traditions on to the elves they come into contact with. Finrod picks up Yule traditions from Beor and introduces them to Nargothrond; the Hadorians do the same in Dor-lomin and Hithlum.
The holiday makes the jump to the Feanorian faction circa YS 430ish, when Caranthir starts badgering his brothers into celebrating it with him. He never gives an adequate explanation for his sudden interest, so they remain unaware that he'd picked up the practice from Haleth and now needs someone new to observe it with since she's passed away.

Imagine, just imagine Finrod is bleeding out in the prison of Sauron, Beren trying to keep him awake but his eyes are starting to flicker and glaze over. Beren is shouting at him, trying to oull him back to reality but he knows he's slipping away. Finrod only smiles, manic, acceptance, but most surprisingly, relief. Beren tries to get him to stop speaking, to stop moving so he could stop the blood flow. Yet Finrod only laughs, that gurgles with the froth of gore at his mouth, and says the single word, “Beor.”
Beren tries to tell him that he is not Beor, but Finrod only cups his chin and says once more; “Beor”
So he doesn't deny it. He holds onto Finrods hands until his grip loosens, and his ancestors name the last word on his friends lips.

“Are you not one of the gods yourself, my friend?” Balan asked, carefully casual.
Fëanor made a noise both indignant and undignified. Many others were now watching sidelong.
“Fuck no!” he said. (They’d been swapping curses yesterday.) “I am, my people are…”
Arda Marred, they hadn’t exchanged vocabulary yet for major political and historical events.
“As you bravely came west, I led my people east to be free, to learn new lands and rule our own people,” he declared to the rapt crowd. “Our war is with the Dark Vala, but we are doing open and organized defiance against the so-named Light! The ‘gods’ can get fucked.”
this is the best thing I’ve ever written

Drawing these two again after what feels like forever! The concept here is that Finrod is in denial about Bëor dying (and it’d be an even bigger punch to the gut since Bëor is the first mortal friend that Finrod will see die) T_T
