it's crazy to remember these scary murder stories i used to listen to as a kid and realize i could take a 30 minute bus ride and i would be there at the place it happened. i get real unsettled. i remember reading about them but only now am i realizing how close to me they were. and i scare myself thinking about it.

Double murder in Tulilahti camping site
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On 18th of July 1951, 23 years old office employee Riitta Aulikki Pakkanen and 21 years old nursing student Eine Maria Nyyssönen decided to go to a summer holiday trip, cycling from Jyväskylä to Savo and North Karelia. Eine sent a postcard on 25th of July in Koli, where she told they will additionally visit Varkaus and promised to return home on the 30th of July. On 3rd of August there were still no sign of them and people in Riitta’s work place started to get worried since her job was supposed to have started and she hadn’t come. Missing persons report was done quite quickly. The last known sighting of the women was from 26th and 27th of July when they had spent a night in a hostel/inn.
The search was started from Varkaus, the last place Eine had told they will visit, but the search wasn’t successful. On 21st of August a draftee who was part of the searching party found Riitta’s and Eine’s bodies. The women were found hidden in a swamp that was near Tulilahti camping site in Heinävesi. Eine was undressed and therefore found naked, but authorities say it wasn’t a sexual crime since the two girls were still untouched.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Riitta and Eine had arrived to the camping site on the 27th of July and put their tent on place. During the same night two local boys had arrived with a boat and hung out with them. From the same night there were sightings of a man riding a motorcycle, who appeared to be stalking the women.
The murder had to have happened on the night between 27th and 28th, because in the morning of 28th the camping site was empty. Riitta had been murdered by hitting her on the head with something heavy, and Eine was brutally stabbed. The belongings of both of them were stolen and hidden. The murderer(s) had hidden their belongings carefully and some of them are still missing today. The murderer(s) also hid the bodies to a swamp that was 200 meters away from their camp, putting logs over the grave and also placing some sort of a tree branch on the grave so it wouldn’t be obvious that the ground had been disturbed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The police were able to find their tent, sleeping bags, underwear, a watch etc. On 4th of September they found their bikes from the deepest part of Tulilahti lake.
Tumblr media
Riitta and Eine were laid to rest in Jyväskylä. This case touched many people, so it is no surprise that thousands gathered for their funeral. Eine was carried by her fellow nursing students, and Riitta was carried by her close relatives.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Suspects
For this case there was one primary suspect whose life this case changed forever. Whether he did the murders or not, he remained guilty till the day he died.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Runar Holmström (1923 - 1961)  was arrested on 6th of November when people suggested that the guy following the women with a motorcycle could be Holmström. The police found a knife from Holmström and considered it as an evidence, because they found out that the knife fit the cutting marks left on the branch that was left on top of the grave. Holmström was seen as a suspect also because he was acting nervously when the police took him to the murder scene. At first he confessed on travelling around Heinävesi, observing the girls companied by the two local boys and then continuing his journey to Varkaus. Afterwards he withdrew his confession. According to the police Holmström had told in his confession things he could not have known without being present in the camping site during the murders. They also found a pistol from Holmström that was loaded and the safety was off, although Holmström didn’t try to use it when resisting the arrest.
In this case there were also a lot of things pointing towards Holmström being innocent. He was right handed; the one who cut the branch for the grave were suspected to being left handed. Holmström also was small in stature and was only 164 cm (5,4) tall so the police thought it was impossible he was able to carry two bodies in rough roads to the swamp, bury and cover them well.
The shovel used in the burying had been fetched from a farm house nearby where usually a feisty dog hadn’t been barking. The police did a reconstruction where they managed to do the burying and hiding the belongings in the time the police suspected all had been done, but the problem was the police already knew what had been done and where. This led the police to think the murderer had to know the camping site area well. Holmström was from Ostrobothnia (region in western Finland), that was about 429,4 km away from Heinävesi (town in eastern Finland). This fact spoke for Holmström being innocent, but at the same time he was the only person who was seen as the only possible suspect. Later it was revealed that the prosecutor for this case, Viljo Laaksonen and the judge believed Holmström to be innocent.
Tumblr media
In the spring of 1961 near Varkaus was found women’s underwear and two hats which were brought there during the same spring according to investigation. Holmström had already been behind bars for 1,5 years so this also pointed to him being innocent. The hats and underwear weren’t faded in color so it was impossible they had been in nature over the winter.
The Trial
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The trial in Heinävesi was a public happening. It started on 8th of June 1960 in Hasumäki school, three days after the murders in the lake Bodom. During the trial (that lasted over a year) Holmström hanged himself in his cell with a rope he made from sheets on 8th of May 1961. He had tried to kill himself two times before the last one, first time leaving behind a note stating “I am innocent”. That time he had tried to kill himself with barbiturate that had been prescribed for him because of insomnia.
The second time Holmström’s brother had sent him the Bible containing 2,266 grams of codeine. The codeine was found before the Bible was given to Holmström.
The suicide wasn’t really a surprise. At that time everyone in prison were afraid they would be sent to forced labor which had a reputation of workers being “buried alive”. (Possibly just describing the horrible working conditions the prisoners were put in; “working themselves to death.)
Hans Assman
One other person seen as a possible suspect is German-born immigrant Hans Assman (1923 - 1998), who was also the suspect for the murders at the lake Bodom. He has never been an official suspect, but former detective inspector and a editor-in-chief of Alibi (Finnish crime magazine) Matti Paloaro and doctor of medicine and surgery Jorma Palo have suggested in their books him possibly being the murderer.
Tumblr media
There were multiple eye witnesses for two men speaking German visiting a kiosk in Punkaharju (close to Heinävesi), two days before the murders, and purchasing a map for the Tulilahti camping site. One of the men fitted the description of Assman. The men were travelling with Volkswagen passenger car. Assman’s wife told that Assman and his driver were in Heinävesi during the murders and that Assman had visited Heinävesi couple times before, also getting to know the area, including Tulilahti camping site.
There has been a lot of critique towards police work because when Holmström was found to possibly be the perpetrator, the police buried all other investigation routes, meaning they did not pay much attention to locals living in Heinävesi who very possibly could’ve been the perpetrators. They were so sure that Holmström was the murderer that they thought they don’t need to investigate other people further. After the death of Holmström, the police also considered this case to be solved that has gained a lot of critique in public. After all these years however this case remains officially unsolved and the police are still accepting tips for it.

❝𝕴 𝖉𝖔𝖓'𝖙 𝖈𝖆𝖗𝖊 𝖎𝖋 𝖎𝖙 𝖍𝖚𝖗𝖙𝖘 𝖞𝖔𝖚𝖗 𝖋𝖚𝖈𝖐𝖎𝖓𝖌 𝖋𝖊𝖊𝖑𝖎𝖓𝖌𝖘.❞
                   – – an Arin Melnikov playlist.
1. “Trashed And Scattered” Avenged Sevenfold
Trashed and scattered again, I’m feeling so low You waste your breath while fucking with me, my blood is so cold My destination’s always unknown, I’ll find my way there But you goddamn motherfuckers always wasting my time
I wont be the a victim, but the first to cast a stone Sedated nights to the bar room fights as metropolis takes its toll And don’t you try to stop me, it’s a place you’ll never know Don’t try to judge or take shots at me, I’ll never let you seize control
Play your game and walk away, your integrity don’t mean shit Crawl on me, you fucking parasite, and I’m gonna take you out
2. “Spit It Out” Slipknot
Did you never give a damn in the first place? Maybe it's time you had the tables turned 'Cause in the interest of all involved, I got the problem solved, and the verdict is guilty Man nearly killed me, stepping where you fear to tread Stop, drop, and roll, you were dead from the get-go Big mouth fucker, stupid cocksucker, are you scared of me now? Then you're dumber than I thought Always is and never was, foundation made of piss and vinegar Step to me, I'll smear ya, think I fear your bullshit? Just another dumb punk chomping at this shit Here’s another way to break through the noise Was it something that I said that got you bent? Gotta be that way if you want it Sanity, literal profanity, hit me
Spit it out All you wanna do is drag me down All I wanna do is stamp you out
About time I set this record straight, all the needlenose punching is making me irate Sick of my bitching falling on deaf ears Where you gonna be in the next five years? The crew and all the fools and all the politics Get your lips ready, gonna gag, gonna make you sick You got dick when they passed out the good stuff Bam, are you sick of me? Good enough, had enough?
Fuck me, I’m all out of enemies Fuck me, I’m all out of enemies Fuck me, I’m all out of enemies
3. “Dust To Dust” Misfits
Hate you, father, for you have sinned Why did you let this life begin? I’m not your savior, I’m not your son A forgotten boy, abandoned creation
Oh, mother, father, answer me Your soulless son, your thing that should not be A brilliant demon, a monster god You gave me life, but took the soul away
With these final words, I pull the switch, we turn to dust Dust to dust My name is like the kiss of death And we embrace, we turn to dust With these final words, I pull the switch, we turn to dust Dust to dust My name is like the kiss of death Ashes to ashes, dust to dust
4. “Walk” Pantera
Can’t you see I’m easily bothered by persistence? One step from lashing out at you You want in, to get under my skin and call yourself a friend I’ve got more friends like you. what do I do?
Is there no standard anymore? What it takes, who I am, where I’ve been Belong You can’t be something you’re not Be yourself by yourself Stay away from me A lesson learned in life Known from the dawn of time
Respect, walk, what did you say? Respect, walk, are you talking to me? Are you talking to me?
5. “Lights Out” Mindless Self Indulgence
Who the hell said any of you get a taste? Do you ever wanna get up all in your face? And nothing you can do could ever make me go away Poor baby, I’m gonna make it all okay
Punch your lights out, hit the pavement That’s what I call entertainment Causing problems makes you famous All the violence makes a statement Punch your lights out, hit the pavement That’s what I call entertainment Causing problems makes you famous All this violence makes a statement
6. “Dead Ringer” Des Rocs
Oh, my reflection's from a time when all the worst was a game Nothing like the shake of life Stuck up in a race, race, race, race, race Hell caught a shadow of a guy Can’t find him one little break See, there’s a gap in his smile For fitting all his pain, pain, pain, pain, pain
Oh, lady I’ve got my hand on the trigger And it’s pointed at the dead ringer
Hold my cigarette while it’s lit And let it burn you, baby Oh, dead ringer, you’re so sick But you look amazing
7. “Are You Dead Yet?” Children Of Bodom
I kiss the ground with love beyond forever Flip off the sky with bleeding fingers till I die
Enemy, take one good look at me Eradicate what you will always be Tainted flesh, polluted soul Through a mirror I behold Throw a punch, shards bleed on the floor Tearing me apart, but I don’t care anymore Should I regret? Or ask myself Are you dead yet?
8. “Blood On My Hands” The Used
You felt the coldness in my eyes, and something I’m not revealing Though you got used to my disguise, you can’t shake this awful feeling It’s the me that I let you know ‘Cause I’ll never show, I have my reasons I hate to say that I told you so, but I told you so
There’s blood on my hands like the blood in you Some things can’t be treated, so don’t make me, don’t make me Be myself around you
9. “Absolute Zero” Stone Sour
The bloody angle, the symmetry Your cheap adhesive isn’t holding me My mouth is a gun I can shoot, I can show you the truth And I don’t need a reason to lie to you
No pun intended, no punishment If I offended you, you needed it Ideas are the bombs in your mind A fissure in time If you don’t have a weapon, you can’t have mine
I can bleed if I wanna bleed I can fail if I feel the need This face is my last confession This life, it feels like a prison
I am not afraid I’m giving in to grievances again You’re looking at an absolute zero I’m not the devil But I won’t be your hero
No fucking quarter, no premiums The world is stuck in delirium Man is a four-letter word, it’s really absurd The hate isn’t fake It’s just inferred
10. “Thank You For The Venom” My Chemical Romance
You’ll never make me leave I wear this on my sleeve You wanna follow something? Give me a better cause to lead Just give me what I need Give me a reason to believe
So give me all your poison, and give me all your pills And give me all your hopeless hearts and make me ill You’re running after something that you’ll never kill If this is what you want Then fire at will
11. “Rather Die” Barns Courtney
I can touch the planets through the roof of my car You’re reaching for the heavens, only bark at the stars Now, all your hundred thousands best remember my name I’d sucker punch an army if it got in my way
I came to kill ‘em Now I’m wiping the spit from my eyes I’ll take a beating But I, I’ll never give up I, I, I think I’d rather die I think I’d rather die I think I’d rather I think I’d rather die
12. “Burning Flag” Marilyn Manson
I’ll join the crowd that wants to see me dead Right now I feel I belong for the first time Multiply your death, divide by sex Add up the violence and what do you get?
We are all just stars and we’re waiting We are all just scarred and we’re hating We are all just stars on your burning flag
You can point your gun at me And hope it will go away But if God was alive He would hate you anyway
13. “Bitter” Anarchy Club
I’m sick and tired of the sick and tired Because what it is just ain’t the thing it was before You’ve heard the stories all before But they’re all true What’s in the mirror, clearer Staring back at you
Set it, set it, set it Set it, set it, set it Set it, set it, set it Set it, set it, set it Set it off
14. “Bang” Empires
Well, I’m sick of banging with your skeleton You were gorgeous till you gave out all your skin Now I can never really take it to the heart again I still got yours blowing up inside my head
At least I’m waking up At least I’m waking up with you hiding in my bones At least I’m waking up I’m waking up You’re dying a legend, darling And I’m dying to touch you, baby
Oh wait, oh wait, before I let you go There’s a thread or two still left between our souls But you went messing with the gods and never fell away You’re still burning off the angel on your face
Oh, this is love Bang up my heart to get your love Bang in my heart to feel you, love Bang, bang up my heart to get your love Bang in my heart to feel you Gonna bang, bang up my heart to get your love Bang on my heart
15. “Flames” R3HAB, Zayn, Jungleboi
Well, well, you better run from me You better hit the road You better up and leave Don’t get too close
‘Cause I’m a rolling stone And I keep rolling on You better run from me Before I take your soul
If I go, let me go Don’t you follow me, let me go I will let you down, let me go Even if your heart can’t take it Light me up in flames
16. “Die MF Die” Dope
I don’t need your forgiveness I don’t need your hate I don’t need your acceptance So what should I do?
I’ll be sorry, so you’ve said I’m not sorry Bang, you’re dead
Die, motherfucker Die, motherfucker, die Die, motherfucker Die, motherfucker, die
17. “Bodies” Drowning Pool
Push me again This is the end
One, nothing wrong with me Two, nothing wrong with me Three, nothing wrong with me Four, nothing wrong with me One, something’s got to give Two, something’s got to give Three, something’s got to give Now
Let the bodies hit the floor Let the bodies hit the floor Let the bodies hit the Let the bodies hit the floor Let the bodies hit the floor Let the bodies hit the floor
Skin against skin, blood and bone You’re all by yourself but you’re not alone You wanted in, and now you’re here Driven by hate, consumed by fear
18. “No Money” Kings Of Leon
Won’t you give me something I need? Won’t you peel me off of the street? Go and wet my tongue Or spit me up and break me a fever
Give me something I can believe in Give me something to walk me away I’m a waste of time And all in all a waste of a living
Can't you see me walking alone I've been down to the haunts and back And I'm way too tired Of blowing out the burning candle
And all this pissing around Cut loose in this fucking town I ain't coming back I got my ticket on to the next one
19. “Parasite Eve” Bring Me The Horizon
I heard they need better signal Put chip and pins in the needles Quarantine all of those secrets in that black hole you call a brain Before it’s too late
Really we just wanna scream something Only pretend to believe something I know you’re baying for blood I wanna turn you around
You can board up your windows You can lock all your doors But you can’t keep washing your hands of this shit anymore When all the king’s horses and all the king’s men Don’t know their asses from their pathogens When life is a prison and death is the door This ain’t a warning This is a war
It’s a parasite eve Got a feeling in your stomach ‘cause you know that it’s coming So you leave your flowers and grieve Don’t forget what they told you When we forget the infection Will we remember the lesson? If the suspense doesn’t kill you Something else will
20. “Dig” Mudvayne
I would love to beat the face of any motherfucker that’s thinking they can change me White-knuckle grip pushing through for the gold If you want a piece of me, I broke the motherfucking mold
Dig Bury me underneath everything that I am rearranging Dig Bury me underneath everything that I was slowly changing
Let me help you tie the rope around your neck Let me help to talk you the wrong way off the ledge Let me help you hold the glock against your head Let me help you tie the rope around your neck Let me help to talk you the wrong way off the ledge Let me help you hold the glock against your head Let me help to chain the weights onto your legs
21. “In Waves” Trivium
Do I end this all for the world to see? Do I take everybody else down Everybody else down with me?
I know that death approaches fast What’s the purpose if this life won’t last? Pulling everyone down with me
Perpetually Perpetually, we’re igniting it in waves Incessantly Incessantly, we’re sinking in flames

LIJ in CMLL 8/31/2018; All In Tape Delayed on NJPWWorld; Busy Week for NJPW in RevPro
Tumblr media
Strong Style Story Episode 44 & Strong Style History 16 on Place To Be Nation
Last night at CMLL’s regular Friday night Arena Mexico show, Tetsuya Naito, EVIL & BUSHI invaded alongside Rush, Terrible & La Bestia del Ring. The advertised match was Rush, Naito & BUSHI v. LA Park, Volador Jr. & Diamante Azul, a prelude to the 85th Aniversario main event of Volador & Matt Taven v. Rush & Barbaro Cavernario, hair v. hair, on 9/14/2018. The entire crew got new red/green baseball jersies (you can see them on La Bestia and Terrible above), and they played a precursor video of all 6 of them doing the fist bump before the introductions. They were very much playing up the international unity of Los Ingobernables, a stark contrast to what we are seeing in NJPW and ROH with the Bullet Club.
As far as the match, the tecnicos took the first and third falls, the third being a DQ after EVIL, who didn’t do much all match, interfered with a pin attempt and the match was called. Naito & BUSHI were pinned for the first fall; Rush pinned Volador for the second. Naito didn’t get to do a whole lot of his usual shtick in this match, bar the goofing off getting in the ring bit. He didn’t get to do the tranquilo pose til post-match, although Rush was able to do so on the ramp during the second fall.
The biggest story in this was BUSHI, as he acted in a very exaggerated way from how he usually does in Japan, but also, he was the one paired off with LA Park for most of the match, including a shirt-choke spot. I think if you told me BUSHI and LA Park would have the most interaction with one another I would have said you were lying. Poor BUSHI even got whipped with LA Park’s  belt, as did Naito, after getting water poured on his back (OUCH!). Many shirts were ripped, nobody got misted, but it was an entertaining spectacle. Afterwards, Los Ingobernables de Todo Mundo posed as above, and Rush cut a promo along with an extended version of the Roll Call. It’s worth watching, as are several of the matches from last night, including the semi-main, singles match between Matt Taven v. Barbaro Cavernario.
The whole show is here on CMLL’s official YouTube page, and TheCubsFan helpfully timestamped the matches, although go back a couple of minutes to see the prelude Los Ingobernables video.

Tonight, of course, is All In, the *ahem*  “independently produced” Bullet Club centric show from the Sears Center in Hoffman Estates, IL. There is a pre-show on Sinclair-owned-who-also-own-Ring-of-Honor network WGN America beginning at 6pm EDT, with a lot of Ring of Honor talents showing up in case you wondered just how “independently produced” this show actually is. The main show begins at 7pm EDT, which, if you are not there, you can see on either FiteTV, who also carry Ring of Honor PPVs and TV episodes, or at the Honor Club, which is a Ring of Honor streaming service for Ring of Honor events. Also, there is a Ring of Honor title match on this show tonight, as well as mostly talents who are under Ring of Honor contract, in case there was any doubt whose show this actually is.
In the meantime, if you don’t feel like paying $40 for a Ring of Honor show without the trade dress on it, NJPWWorld will have the show available on its service sometime after the live event, seeing as Kazuchika Okada, as well as both the IWGP Heavyweight Champion and IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team champions are on this show, owing to the relationship between NJPW and Ring of Honor. Anyway, it’ll be available on NJPWWorld probably tomorrow for the price of the subscription you already pay for (presumably), and the billing just hit so you’re good to go there.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile on the other side of the Atlantic, it’s shaping up to be a busy week in RevPro, and with a lot of help from NJPW talents. The Haunting of Netflix House 5: The Netflix Dimension
What’s up Octobocops, it’s Halloweason. Let’s get spooked. Here are some movies of the horror and horror-adjacent genres that you might watch by yourself or with a party of friends or with the spirit of a long-deceased duke who lives in inhabits your house. This is part five; you know the goddamn drill by now.
Previously, on The Haunting of Netflix House:
2013: The Haunting of Netflix House
2014: The Haunting of Netflix House 2: Your Sister is a Netflix
2015: The Haunting of Netflix House 3: The Season of the Netflix
2016: The Haunting of Netflix House 4: The Netflix Master
A couple of notes for those who are new to the list:
This is being posted on October 2, 2017. For humans of the future who find this, the links may not all be up to date. Some might even expire by November 2017. Click at your own risk.
I try to offer both breadth and depth of options on this list, but it is by no means exhaustive. I’m sorry if a favorite of yours got left off. There’s a chance I just haven’t seen it yet. Feel free to reblog and add some of your favorites, but please make sure a movie is actually currently available on Netflix before jumping my shit about some nonsense I “forgot,” please and thank you.
This list is based upon movies that are available on Netflix in the US. I have no idea what is streaming on Canadian Netflix or British Netflix or Slovenian Netflix. How would I know this. Why would I know this. Please do not expect me to know this. Feel free to be the Canadian/British/Slovenian Benito and make your own list applicable to your own countryhumans.
Horror movies, by their nature, have horrific things in them. Most of these movies are violent; lots of them deal with torture, abuse, and mental illness. If some element of this jumps out to me while I’m writing these up, I’ll mention them, but if you are sensitive to or have issues with certain types of content, you might look an individual movie up on Common Sense Media first to check for content warnings.
While there are always good horror movies to be found on Netflix, if you really like scary movies, you should just get a Shudder subscription (or even just the free trial!). It has an unbeatable, well-curated selection.
All right let’s get to the goddamn movies what say
Classics (this section seems to get smaller every year):
Jaws (this is about a shark)
The Fly (the Vincent Price version, not the Jeff Goldblum one)
Gremlins (technically a Christmas movie, obviously, but maybe you’re a rebel)
The Sixth Sense (is this a classic? I mean probably your mom has heard of it, so)
Horror Comedies:
Tucker & Dale vs. Evil (highly recommended)
Little Evil (new from the maker of Tucker and Dale; great cast; more than the Omen spoof it looks like; recommended)
Troll Hunter (not horror in the traditional sense; not a “Halloween” monster; found footage style; subtitled; awesome)
Young Frankenstein (maybe you’ve heard of this one)
The Host (subtitled; not a “Halloween” monster)
Ravenous (fucking rules)
Housebound (recommended)
Patchwork (in the vein of like Re-Animator and Frankenhooker)
Deathgasm (the best the best the best; watch immediately)
The Bar
Haunted House/Ghost shit:
The Awakening
The Pact (recommended)
The Babadook (highest possible recommendation; how have you not watched this yet)
Under the Shadow (recommended; basically the Iranian Babadook)
The Canal
We Are Still Here (Barbara Crampton is in this; her name will be mentioned a few more times on this list because she is apparently a major selling point for some people)
Last Shift (haunted police station; recommended)
The Legend of Hell House (love this one; love Roddy McDowall)
I Am The Pretty Thing That Lives in the House (very slow paced but atmospheric)
Coraline (yeah, the scary stop-motion one)
Vampire shit:
Stake Land (non-traditional vampire rules; not really my jam but some people love it; no idea if the sequel is good)
Byzantium
Night Watch
Werewolf shit:
Late Phases (old blind guy vs werewolves; pretty good)
When Animals Dream (hit some similar thematic notes to Ginger Snaps, but completely different tonally; subtitled)
Zombie shit:
Train to Busan (this rules; subtitled)
Witch/Demon/Pagan shit:
At the Devil’s Door (from the maker of The Pact; not as good, still interesting)
The Void (Lovecraftian cult shit; very cool visuals and practical effects)
Baskin (subtitled; super gory; also, the protags are asshole cops who tell transphobic stories and say homophobic slurs and talk about bestiality at the beginning, so heads up; worth a watch if that doesn’t bother you)
The Devil’s Candy
Hellions (this is not *great,* but it looks good and is heavily Halloweeny)
The Wailing (fucking amazing; subtitled)
Found footage shit:
V/H/S (lots of sex, violence, and sexualized violence
V/H/S/2 (same)
V/H/S Viral (same but in a different way)
The Den (ChatRoulette the horror movie; highly highly highly recommended)
Creep (recommended)
They’re Watching (not super amazing, but it’s wild af and I kind of love it; what if House Hunters International renovated a witch house?)
Man Vs (pretty okay)
Slasher shit (needless to say, these are gory):
Wes Craven’s New Nightmare
Curse of Chucky (way better than you think it is)
Clown (the haunted clown suit movie so good that Marvel said, “Yo, this guy should be in charge of Spider-Man”)
The Windmill (it’ll do fine if you’re just looking for a new slasher; tbf it is probably  the best windmill-themed slasher ever made though)
Other shit:
Monsters (really good; not “Halloween” monsters)
It Follows (hey, what’s up, it’s the best horror movie of the past decade; highest possible rec)
Sleepy Hollow (what section do Headless Horsemen go in? Dunno; the movie not the show)
The House at the End of Time (highly recommended; subtitled)
Honeymoon
Starry Eyes
White God (DOG REVENGE)
They Look Like People (this is a slow burn, but super highly recommended)
Extraordinary Tales (animated anthology of Edgar Allan Poe stories narrated by famous people; a mixed bag, but cool)
Darling (okay, so: this is a really beautiful and atmospheric film that I, generally speaking, recommend; however, it is kind of “artsy,” there is not a lot of dialogue, it is in black and white, there are some light strobing effects, rape does not occur on screen but is implied to have happened in a character’s past)
The Hallow (scary fairies)
Tales of Halloween (an anthology, so a mixed bag; okay overall, but it’s definitely Halloween-y)
The Invitation (highest possible recommendation)
Beyond the Gates (I actually did not like this very much, but some people might find it interesting, especially if you like--wait for it--Barbara Crampton)
Turbo Kid (this is not really horror, but if you like horror, especially splatter stuff, you will probably like it; it is good as shit)
Gerald’s Game (new shit from Mike Flanagan and it’s really great. Deals with lots of hard issues like abuse and such so maybe take a look at content issues if you are sensitive to that kind of stuff. Also definitely not for the squeamish, so head’s up. That said, it’s really really good)
80s/90s shit:
Hellraiser (not my style, but maybe you like this stuff, iunno)
Children of the Corn
The Craft
Non-Supernatural Thriller/Violence shit (these are violent):
Hush (Mike Flanagan directs; home invasion with a deaf woman protagonist; fucking rules)
The Silenced (haven’t actually watched this yet, but it looks good; don’t *think* it’s supernatural?; presumably subtitled)
The Eyes of My Mother (black and white; super bleak; beautiful and highly recommended)
Kristy
Dig Two Graves
We Need to Talk About Kevin (very bleak)
The Bad Batch (from the director of A Girl Walks Home Etc; only kind of horror-adjacent; Jason Momoa and Keanu Reeves are in this)
Sun Choke (visually beautiful but super art-housey, also lots of mental illness and abuse stuff in this one; also *Barbara Crampton*)
Zodiac (biography of Ted Cruz)
I Don’t Feel at Home in this World Anymore (so fucking good; very funny also)
Nightcrawler (basically a vampire movie, but with a camera instead of fangs)
Horror and Horror-Adjacent Documentaries (all the good horror docs got moved to Shudder):
The Nightmare (a doc on sleep paralysis and night terrors that is so-so as a documentary, but super effective as a horror film)
Witches: A Century of Murder (history of British witch trials, reenacted; two parts)
“But, Benito!” I hear you cry. “I don’t have Netflix for some reason! What about some other streaming services?” Yeah, all right. Here are some quick hits that are definitely not exhaustive. Just a couple of party jams you might enjoy if you’ve burned through the Netflix list.
What’s on Hulu though
10 Cloverfield Lane
Monster Squad
Fright Night (the original; a must watch if you haven’t seen it)
Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2
From Dusk Til Dawn
An American Werewolf in London
Hatchet
Pumpkinhead (check this one out if you haven’t seen it)
The Blob
I Saw the Devil (amazing)
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (either version)
Shaun of the Dead
The Loved Ones
Wolfcop
The Thing
Rigor Mortis
Borgman
The Descent
Bloodsucking Bastards
Willow Creek
Berberian Sound Studio
Plus a bunch of shit that’s also on Netflix
What about Amazon Prime you idiot
The Girl with All the Gifts
Them (not Them!)
The Witch
Hell House LLC
Neon Demon
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Nosferatu
Green Room
Little Shop of Horrors (the Corman one, not the musical)
The Blackcoat’s Daughter
The Bay
Society
The Last Man on Earth
The Last Exorcism
What We Do in the Shadows
Amazon Prime is hard to navigate so that’s all. If I left off a favorite, it’s not because I don’t like it. It’s because it didn’t pop up in the first 20 pages of search results.
Tell me some good Shudder ones
The Innkeepers
A Tale of Two Sisters
The Gorgon
Lake Bodom
Prevenge
All the Phantasms (maybe not Ravager)
Shrew’s Nest
Noroi: The Curse
The House of the Devil
Black Sunday
Let the Right One In
Murder Party (highly recommended, esp for Halloween)
WNUF Halloween Special
Ghostwatch (play this at your party if you want to fucking win Halloween)
This list could be a million more entries long. Shudder rules.
What about Crackle/Vudu/YouTube/etc
Please shut up
As usual, please do me a solid and only circulate the current version of the list, so people aren’t clicking on dead links and thinking I’m an idiot. Again, this list is not and could not be completely exhaustive, and if I left off your favorite movie, I swear I was not targeting you personally. And, again, some of these movies are more interesting than they are good AND horror is a highly subjective experience, so your mileage may vary on some of these.
If you enjoyed this list, perhaps consider checking out some of my other Halloween-related posts:

and my general Halloween tag, which includes short films, movie trailers, comics, stories, and more
Also maybe consider checking out my Letterboxd profile, where I rate and review movies of all types (but primarily horror) all year long and from all sorts of sources, in case you’re wondering what’s good on more than just Netflix. Also also, maybe take a look at some of my comics, several of which are appropriate for Halloween times.
Happy Halloween, nerds!

THE TOO GOOD TEN with Hand Made House
Los Angeles pop band Hand Made House - made up of life-long friends Tucker Click (lead vocals) and Josh Nardine (drums) with Maison Thomas-Eudy (guitar/vocals) and Amin Mortada (guitar/vocals) - celebrate the release of their latest single, “Like The Weather” which follows up the seven song project Honestly, Honesty that released late last year. “Like The Weather” gives fans a taste of an edgier side of pop for the four-piece band and one that they’re excited to explore. Get to know know about the new song and the guys of Hand Made House by checking out their Too Good Ten interview below:
Tumblr media
1. Hand Made House was originally started and created while pursuing degrees at Berklee College of Music. What aspects/techniques/advice from your time there do you still implement in your music or personal lives?
TUCKER: I think we learned to time manage well. We were working, going to school, and trying to start a band from the ground up. I personally took a lot of inspiration out of being surrounded by such talented people all the time as well. I had some professors that really believed in me and the band and I think that set me on fire with direction and drive.
JOSH: Obviously many of us have direct skill sets that we learned from being at Berklee whether that be production, songwriting, or music business. But one of the best things I feel we learned at Berklee was how to be in a band. Berklee gave us the opportunity to mess up and learn as we go without major consequence. We learned how to build our business and write with people. I attribute a lot of our growth to that community whether we knew it or not.
2. Hand Made House is such an interesting and cool name for a band. What’s the story behind it?
TUCKER: I was writing a song about my friend who was going through a really difficult time and was feeling very alone. The last verse of the song had the lines:
“If hand made house / And heart makes home / You’ve got what it takes / To build one of your very own”
I felt like we had built a home within our band and it felt like we had built it from the ground up. I remember telling the other guys I wanted that to be our “thing” we bring to the music industry. I want our fans to want to feel like a community when they come to ours shows. So, we pulled that line and named the band!
3. Being in a band can feel more like being in a family which can have its benefits and challenges. What’s each member’s strongest contribution to the band? How do you guys normally sort out creative differences?
MAISON: Yeah, I feel like we can identify as a family more than most since most of us live together and have lived together for years. We always talk about just how crazy it is that it just works. I mean, we obviously have our moments but we usually sort everything out when it comes up. I don’t think we ever leave a room still dwelling on a problem - we always just talk it out until everyone is back to messing around again. As far as strengths, I think Tucker and Josh have a really good sense of organization. They are the ones to make sure projects get done. Tucker always pushes people to be their best selves and do everything they need to. Josh is always right there with him doing the fun nitty gritty behind the scenes stuff. Amin is the most creatively driven, he always wants to write new stuff and sends new ideas to our group chat every week. I’ll throw my strengths to comic relief.
AMIN: Generally, all our songs are collaborations within the entire band. Usually, Josh and I are heavily involved in the early stages of a song. We’ll workshop an instrumental track a few times before its picked up by Tucker and Maison to be developed even further. When it comes to dealing with creative differences I take the approach of thinking about what’s best for the song rather than what I think is right for me. I think it’s important to separate your emotional attachment from an idea and look at the bigger picture. Generally when the band is running things that way we come to an agreement/compromise much faster.
Tumblr media
4. Congrats on the release of “Like The Weather” which you guys have described as your “edgy comeback” after last year’s pop-driven EP, Honestly, Honesty. What was the inspiration behind this one? Why did you feel inclined to comeback “edgy” than straight pop-focused?
TUCKER: I remember writing this on our drive to LA, while we were still releasing Honestly, Honesty. I think I had a lot of bitterness from being stuck inside due to quarantine and was generally upset with the direction of the music industry at the time. I also had a conversation with Amin and Josh about how I was getting serious imposter syndrome about our last EP, because they’re generally happy songs, and I simply wasn’t happy. I feel like “Like the Weather” is my first touch on a slightly different lyrical style I’ve always wanted to do, and pushes us in a direction I’ve always wanted to try.
JOSH: You know, for the most part we all come from Rock/Punk backgrounds. It’s what we all grew up on and pulling from that felt right for us. About a year ago we had a pretty strong realization while writing Honestly, Honesty about what our identity and sound as a band would be and could be. Back then we struggled to know what the right move was when we were writing those “pop” songs that made it on that EP. We didn’t know how we could possibly transition to that sound and It was a bit of an identity crisis for us as a band. I think we all realized the nature of modern music is very Genre-Fluid and that’s been the approach we’ve taken ever since. “Like The Weather” I feel is the culmination of all those things. I think it’s the beginning of Hand Made House working to create music without restraint.
5. One of the lyrics in "Like The Weather” is “I get drunk / I go and get tattoos” What’s every members go-to drink order when out at a bar? Have you guys drunkenly gotten tattoos before?
TUCKER: It depends on the bar, but I have to say - I love a margarita. And funny enough, the first month of quarantine I gave myself a stick and poke tattoo at like 5 AM after a night of multiple spicy margaritas. It turned out surprisingly good.
MAISON: Well, I’m definitely allergic to alcohol. So, probably water. However, I do wish I could drunkenly get tattoos. One time I had a dream I got a tattoo, and I still want that tattoo.
AMIN: If it’s the afternoon, definitely a Bloody Mary. Night time, I’ll take a nice IPA. Yup...I don’t wanna talk about it.
JOSH: I’m not a big drinker, in fact I barely ever. However margaritas are really wonderful mostly for the salt rim.
Tumblr media
6. You guys recently played the Music Lives 2021 Live Stream festival. What was the experience like? What’s one of the biggest learnings from putting together a performance for a massive live stream like that?
AMIN: Honestly, it was just like any rehearsal. You guys got a sneak peak of what rehearsal looks like during that show. It was super fun and its a great feeling being part of such a great line up.
JOSH: It was a ton of fun! I think it was cathartic for all of us knowing we haven’t played a show in over a year. Playing that set was one of the first times in a while I felt like I was really performing for someone even though it was over a computer screen.
7. How was it finding out your single “In Bloom” had gained traction without much promotion? Does it make you rethink promotion strategies each release?
TUCKER: It was really interesting to see “In Bloom” grow the way it did. “Through You” had been our biggest song for over a year, and “In Bloom” slowly grew until it popped up to our #1 spot. I think it goes to show that - even if we promote a song a ton, the people will always listen to what they want to listen to. Especially with indie artists like us who don’t have the means to promote a song like major label artists do.
Tumblr media
8. What’s one piece of advice or quote – related to career or life – that you wish you would’ve known sooner?
TUCKER: Success is all a mentality. I know there are people who wish they could be in my shoes, just as much as I wish I could be in other people’s. I think it’s important to realize where you’re at currently, respect that spot and continue to try and grow.
MAISON: As far as career advise, growing up with family in the industry and spending so much time with people working at the top of their career paths. I’ve learned that just being a good person and fun to be with will get you far. Other than that, my dad told me once, “be better” not meaning that I was doing bad or that I wasn’t “reaching expectations”. He just wanted me to be better than my own expectations or limitations that I put on myself. As small and simple as it was, I think about it everyday.
9. For each member, if you could only listen to (5) artists for the rest of your life who would they be?
MAISON:
Kings of Leon
Young The Giant
Nothing But Thieves
Foo Fighters
The Band CAMINO
TUCKER:
Nothing But Thieves
Lil Peep
Phoebe Bridgers
The 1975
Frank Ocean
AMIN:
A Tribe Called Quest
Stevie Wonder
Children of Bodom
Steel Pulse
Iron Maiden
JOSH:
Elton John
Jesse McCartney
Frank Sinatra
The Fray
James Taylor
10. What’s the rest of 2021 look like for Hand Made House?
TUCKER: It’s hard to tell for sure with the state of everything that’s going on, but I think we’ll start playing shows again once we feel it’s responsible. I think we’ll be releasing new music that’s outside the box for us, and continue doing what we do best - playing shows and writing music!

ALEXI LAIHO’s Bandmate DANIEL FREYBERG: ‘You Were A Legend Who Created Magic And Raised The Bar To The Next Level’
Alexi Laiho‘s CHILDREN OF BODOM and BODOM AFTER MIDNIGHT bandmate Daniel Freyberg has paid tribute to the late guitarist/vocalist, calling him “a legend who created magic and raised the bar to the next level.” Freyberg, who played with NAILDOWN and NORTHER before joining CHILDREN OF BODOM in 2016, took to his Instagram earlier today (Monday, January 4) to write: “‘We’ll play together until the…

AMORPHIS & SOILWORK announce 2019 EU Co-Headline Tour; JINJER And NAILED TO OBSCURITY Confirmed As Support Acts!
Finnish melancholic progressive metallers AMORPHIS released their enormously successful new album Queen Of Time, on May 18th, 2018 through Nuclear Blast. To present their new hymns live on stage, the band is pleased to announce that they will join forces with visionary Swedish metallers SOILWORK for a European co-headline run in early 2019. The band is currently working hard on the follow-up to 2015's hit album The Ride Majestic (Nuclear Blast). The trek will mark SOILWORK's first tour in support of their new record. As if this package wasn't great enough, these headliners will be supported by Ukrainian modern metal outfit JINJER plus German melodic death/doom metallers NAILED TO OBSCURITY, who are working on their Nuclear Blast debut. AMORPHIS guitarist Esa Holopainen commented, "We can't wait to hit the European roads and take the AMORPHIS live production to the next level with the »Queen Of Time« tour. We are really happy to bring the mighty SOILWORK, JINJER and NAILED TO OBSCURITY to this tour as well. Get your tickets now, it's gonna be a blast from the past!" Added SOILWORK vocalist Björn "Speed" Strid, "We are very excited about touring with AMORPHIS, as the first tour for our upcoming album. AMORPHIS have been my favorite Finnish band since I was a teenager, when Tales From The Thousand Lakes was my daily soundtrack. Both of the bands' unique take on metal, will create an epic cocktail, as we roll through Europe on tour together. It's about time, I can't wait!" JINJER stated "We are absolutely thrilled and honored to tour alongside two metal giants such as AMORPHIS and SOILWORK, it's almost too good to be true! We'll be bringing our A game and playing some new material as well. Europe, get ready because 2019 is going to get loud!" NAILED TO OBSCURITY guitarist Jan-Ole Lamberti said, "We can't wait to get back on the road again and we are very excited to be a part of this killer tour package. We are looking forward to seeing familiar faces at cities and venues that we've already played in the past, but also to meeting lots of new people at places and even countries we haven't been to yet. This is going to be great!" AMORPHIS + SOILWORK w/ JINJER, NAILED TO OBSCURITY 11.01. D Oberhausen - Turbinenhalle 2 12.01. NL Nijmegen - Doornroosje 13.01. D Hamburg - Markthalle 14.01. Buckcherry: Warpaint
Tumblr media
Hello everyone! Today i didn’t really have any motivation towards an anniversary review so today i am going to do a new album by Buckcherry, I grabbed this and album the latest one from Children of Bodom and decided to tackle this one since i warmed up this morning to the other. The new Children of Bodom album is phenomenal by the way and brings back their classical sound with some very intense jams with a bit more purpose than a lot of their prior work had. This album is notable due to it having only the singer as the original member due to disagreements in musical direction. Their guitarist Stevie D. is the longest tenured guy currently going back to their 15 album (I reviewed). From my brief listen it seems to venture a little more towards their live appeal instead of the focused polish from their last few albums. It has been compared to 15 and in terms of rawness i will agree; but add some elements of their debut album to it as well. Let’s get started and see how this album shapes up.
Warpaint (Single): We begin with the title track and first single. It begins with an old school 80′s rock n roll vibe before Josh arrives to infuse a strong sense of rawness into the front. His is a bit hoarse in the mix but with the relatively slow jam progression; it should ease the listener in with a fair sense of ease. The chorus has a decent sense of catchiness but the raw regular verses will bring firm similarities to their 15 album to mind. I can see this being a decent live track to toss in due to its balanced energy and well done solos. I do think the initial track should of been one with a little more punch to it; but the ease-in factor of this track will make it a suitable opener as well. 7.5/10
Right Now: This track begins with an interesting southern grit guitar and a groovy drum beat that Josh arrives with a nice drawl to warm things up. It contains an interesting texture that i could see a crowd dancing to rather nicely. I would say that vocally Josh is bit muffled when picked out so; while they clearly are focusing on his raw traits in this album; i think the production might of touched his performance up too much. Other than that it’s another easygoing bar vibe track that focuses more on jamming than on the lyrics. 7.5/10
Head Like a Hole (Nine Inch Nails Cover/Single): Now i heard bad things about this at first but upon listening to it; i can easily say this is a surprisingly solid album highlight. It begins with a burst of guitar rage that immediately catches the listener’s attention with ease. It also serves to grow a sense of excitement in this album finally. The drums have a perfect bashing quality that echoes off of the guitars in perfect respect to the original. Josh’s vocals are left alone this time and have their signature sense of swaggery aggression. He does a perfect job of covering the vocals and paying tribute to Trent Reznor’s vocal delivery while still staying true to himself as well. Even though it’s a cover; its a smart pick for a single because it showcases a significant level of strength for the album and demonstrates a potential risky move being pulled off to a significant success. This will easily be a crowd highlight on their upcoming tours and it has me hoping the track on here titled Closer is another NIN cover. 10/10
Radio Song: This ballad track is a mainstream intended song as titled ha ha. It because with an emotional vocal entrance from Josh and is supported by blissful acoustic riffs. He delivers stronger lyrics this time around that establishes a nice sense of substance for the listener to unwind around. The chorus will be easy to sing along to and it will make for a good live pick. I could see this as a good pick for a single over their title track due to its clear mainstream appeal that could sit on the radio effectively. I do note some strong vibration in Josh’s vocals later on in the song; which doesn’t take away from the song’s strength; but its noticeable. I would probably change whoever handled vocals for next time to eliminate that.  Other than that; this is a pretty solid track to lighten the mood a bit and showcase the band’s talent with ballad tunes. 9/10
The Vacuum: The guitars return to a more gritty rock n roll vibe that sounded like something Nickelback would do at first before the vocals arrive. It has a soothing melody that is supported by a prominent rhythm section. The vocals are okay and progress decently but that muffle trait starts to get annoying as it progresses and could of brought more catchiness with a smoother delivery. He does continue to hit his high notes with ease so i will continue to suggest the guy that handled his vocal polishing get a pink slip for their next album. The instrumentals will deliver strongly and have some neat solos to focus on; so while it has it’s flaws it’s a listenable track on the album. 7/10
Bent (Single): Now so far this is my favorite track off the album and i’m glad that it was made into a single. It begins with some light guitar melodies before drums arrive to signal for the guitars to roar into a powerful jam track. It screams Velvet Revolver to a tasteful degree in terms of guitars initially and Josh delivers very solid vocals that aren’t fucked with this time around. His lyrics are solid and the chorus really livens things up and would really rev up a live audience. The instrumentals are very competent on here and i can tell they really had a blast jamming on this one. I recommend checking this out if you are on a browse listen. The solos are solid, the drums bash with ease and while the bass is hard to pick out; it doesn’t feel like it’s missing. 8.5/10
Back Down: This song begins with an odd back and forth vocal echo from Josh that will give a prime example of his live style for rallying an audience during a song. After his pep talk opening he goes into some pretty smooth verses that benefit from a nice sense of swagger. It meshes well with backing female vocals and a groovy rhythm section to strengthen some dance appeal in it. So far it’s a pretty simple piece that showcases more of the band’s performance centered side and has some very strong and melodic solos to sink your teeth into as well. Not a bad way to ease your way into the second half of the album. 8/10
The Alarm: This song begins with guitars that develop a very groovy southern blues tone. It immediately screams for some nice bar dancing and Josh’s vocals work very well at developing a sense of catchy swagger that would be nice to see live. As is usual lyrics probably wont stick out much over the general vocals and instrumentals but they make a firm statement during the chorus without being too overly dramatic. I definitely appreciate the stronger use of old school rock solos on here verses past albums.; because it really helps to give you a feel of how well they are live. 8.5/10
No Regrets: We begin with a nice guitar riff that is rather energetic but soothing and meshes with a consistent drum beat nicely. Josh delivers some decent vocals that don’t vibrate too much but really benefit from a strong sense of substance in his lyrics. It gives the song a nice sense of reflection that would make this a nice jingle for a tv show. The solo stands out strong as has been the case on most of these songs. I would note this as nice live friendly track that further showcases how fun and raw of an experience these guys had recording the album. 9/10
The Hunger: The guitars begin with more of a country vibe than normal; but is a very nice surprise on this ballad. Josh arrives to infuse a strong of emotion and lyrical substance into the listener’s front. This song actually demonstrates that Josh would stand a strong chance of having mainstream success if he dabbled with country in his solo work. 9/10
Closer: This song begins with some strong guitar/drum bashing that reminds me of AC/DC to a positive degree. Josh takes a more casual vocal delivery that matches the instrumentals in creating a slightly more easygoing progression. It gradually infuses more aggressive elements as it progresses but it foes feel like it misses something to really make the song stand out on the album. Other than that it’s a fairly decent rocker that pays heavy tribute to AC/DC and while it may not be the actual closer as titled; it does set the album up somewhat for the real closer lol. 7.5/10
The Devil’s in the Details: This finale track begins with a bluesy rock entry that builds up nicely before Josh arrives to deliver a more angsty vocal tone. He does suffer from that over echo effect but does succeed into creating a more raw and bluesy tone with the instrumentals. It does feel like it needs a little extra lift during the casual vocals since they take awhile to progress. Other than that it closes the album in a fairly decent way showcasing the album’s more raw and live jam/performance centered focus. 7/10
Overall album rating: 8.2/10
It is a good drop in score from their last album by a margin of .7 but remains consistent with their scoring on the other albums i reviewed so far. While the over production of his vocals on some tracks hurt them to a strong level i will praise the band for their performance overall. After 20 years in the game this album showcased and energized band stripping back their complex elements from the last two albums and just jamming in an old fashioned garage band day. It heavily showcases the live strength that this band thrives on and is some class old school rock n roll. I do hope on their next album; the vocals are done better but the current band members demonstrated their competencies for creating some solid jams and tasteful solos. I hope you guys enjoyed this review and i shall see you next time.
