Baddha Konasana
Baddha Konasana or Bound Angle Pose is also called Cobbler Pose. This is a seated asana which helps in stretching the hips, abdominal muscles and thighs. This is a grounding pose that activates the Muladhara, or root chakra. It connects you to the energy of Mother Earth, makes you feel safe and strong, and helps open your hips. The name Baddha Konasana is derived from the Sanskrit words bandha, angle and asana, in which Baddha means to bind or bind, Kona means angle and asana means posture. It gets its name because it involves the soles of your feet meeting while your legs are bent at an angle. Once you are in this pose, you will notice that your folded legs also look like the wings of a butterfly, hence it is also called butterfly posture. Therapeutic Reclined Bound Angle Pose, also known as Reclined Cobbler’s Pose, is a deeply relaxing yoga position that is recommended for students of all levels.
Its Sanskrit name — “Supta Baddha Konasana” comes from four words:
“Supta” — means “Reclining”
“Baddha” — means “Bound”
“Kona” — means “Angle”
“Asana” — means “Pose”

Baddha Konasana (Bound Angle Pose)
300 Hour Yoga Teacher Training
Contraindications and Cautions :
Groin or knee injury: Only perform this pose with blanket support under the outer thighs.
Modifications and Props :
To understand the release of the heads of the thigh bones, fold two blankets and put one under each outer thigh, supporting the thighs an inch or so above their maximum stretch. Then lay a 10-pound sand bag on each inner groin, parallel to the crease between the thigh and pelvis. Release the thigh heads away from the weight, and let them sink into the blankets. Do not use the bags unless the thighs are supported.
Beginner's Tip :
It can be difficult to lower the knees toward the floor. If your knees are very high and your back rounded, be sure to sit on a high support, even as high as a foot off the floor.
Benefits :
Stimulates abdominal organs, ovaries and prostate gland, bladder, and kidneys
Stimulates the heart and improves general circulation* Stretches the inner thighs, groins, and knees
Helps relieve mild depression, anxiety, and fatigue
Soothes menstrual discomfort and sciatica

Therapeutic for flat feet, high blood pressure, infertility, and asthma
Consistent practice of this pose until late into pregnancy is said to help ease childbirth.
Traditional texts say that Baddha Konasana destroys disease and gets rid of fatigue.

DETAIL + DEPTH | Baddha Konasana as a transition from chair to floor, and for Malasana (upcoming in sequence) . There are endless options in how to prop this pose, and if you scroll through my feed you'll see a number of good ones. Sometimes though, with a prop heavy practice, it's refreshing for both my mind and body to rely solely on the first prop in asana: the body. Just as Guruji says, "Body is my first prop." . To take Baddha Konasana, sit upright on the center sitbones. Lift the spine, ribcage and sternum. Draw the feet together and press them into each other with equal force. If the knees are higher than the hips, prop the pose by elevating the seat (which will drop the knees). See if there is more freedom and less gripping in the groins. As well, place two blocks of appropriate height, bolsters, or blankets, under the outer legs if the knees are suspended in mid-air. This will also teach the hip adductors to release so the knees can begin to descend. Looking for ease My yoga view this morning. Since the beginning of the year we’ve shifted into searching for ease. We look for it in poses, finding the edge then easing off to find that place where the pose is most productive. We look for it in the body, in the heart and in the brain. I woke up late this morning, was trying hard to wake up. A student texted that she was running late. So, I decided to look for the ease. I texted back that we could push class back half an hour then posted on Facebook that class was pushed back. Not only did it give us a sense of ease, but others who hadn’t planned on joining were able to practice with us. Looking for the ease almost always brings unexpected gifts.
