Thoughts on Hereditary: first and foremost that was a very good movie, I definitely had a good time watching it! Pacing and timing were *chef’s kiss,* plot was tight, there was really good lighting, the miniatures and effects were absolutely wonderful, acting was spot-on across the board.
Aaaaaand I still think it’s overhyped. As much of a visual and spooky treat as that was, I…didn’t see anything quite as revolutionary as a lot of people said I would? There wasn’t a lot that was unique to Hereditary. I had seen it before. The death of a child sending a parent spiraling into vengeful supernatural madness, a family fracturing under the weight of grief, a demon-worshipping cult, violence with disturbing sound effects, primal screaming. These are all things I’ve heard particularly praised about the movie. All of it was executed beautifully here and, except for the grief support group and heavy-handed tragedy lesson, I thoroughly enjoyed every second. I would happily watch it again!
But it wasn’t new. Pumpkinhead gives us a grieving father who turns to the supernatural for a twisted comfort. The Babadook did “grief is the real monster” four years before Hereditary and included a psychologically tormented mother with a complex relationship to her son, too. Throw a dart and you’ll hit a demon-worshipping cult and the same thing for violence with icky sounds. The desperate screams at the end of Saw are going to live rent-free in my head far longer than I’ll remember the plot of this movie.
Hereditary brought all those things together, but…yeah. I didn’t come out of this saying that my life is forever changed or that Ari Aster is a genius. He did a damn good job with this, the cast and crew put on a spectacle that I agree will endure as a classic. End of the day, though, if I really feel like I need to watch a movie about a family struggling with complicated dynamics, the pitfalls of growing up, and demons…I’ll probably watch The Exorcist again.

My mom used to make these homemade chocolate bars, and she would just throw anything she wanted in there- peanut butter, pretzel pieces, mini marshmallows, various nuts and candies, raisins, cranberries, coconut flakes, literally whatever she thought would be good. She stopped making them after I got violently sick from eating a batch of the cranberry ones. Still don’t know why that happened, I love cranberries and have never had a problem with them since. Those bars were good, but it was kinda weird getting a different texture every time Mom made them. You just never knew what was going to be in there.
I know people like those things but the idea of not knowing what texture I’m going to get scares me-

seriously have been thinking about this all night long. call me autistic but the fact that 90% of workplaces the point is not to get your work done and then be done doing it but to instead perform an elaborate social dance in which you find something to do even when you're done doing everything you need to do in order to show your fellow workers that you, too, are Working . because you are at Work . disgusting why cant we all agree that if there is no work immediately to be done. we just dont do anything
