trying to find entertaining & relatable shit to watch/listen to on booktube and bookstagram as a non-western reader (and hopefully one day author), should have its own difficulty rating because holy fuck.

A Look At: The Three Hermits
The Three Hermits was written by Leo Tolstoy in third person past tense. The main character is a bishop on a ship with pilgrims, a fisherman, and the ship’s crew. The story starts with bible verses, Matthew 6: 7-8. Jargon included in the story would be cassock, steerman or helmsman, and benediction. A cassock is a full length garment that’s worn by Christian clergy and other members of church. A…

For booktuber anon, one person that pops up is With Cindy (prev readwithcindy but she does movies now too and recently reacted to an album). I haven't watched her in a while, but she collabed once with coleydoesthings (I think that's her name?) And while she might sometimes dig into potentially problematic things, she usually tries to be nuanced , one example being talking about Addie LaRue vs A Deadly Education, where the first had p much no POC characters, while the second had nothing malicious, but a couple things that should have been caught by a sensitivity reader (and I think one specific paragraph even got taken out for future editions). She read off differing opinions in the comments about both books, and it was a good video imo and showed that yes, when it comes to POC rep, we aren't a monolith and differ when considering something good vs bad rep. And when reviewing ACOTAR, she brings up the dubcon scene in the first book and the coming out scene in the 3rd(?) book. Iirc she personally found the dubcon scene hot (she's unapologetic about loving smut too) and basically said "he's a fairy"/"it's fantasy" or something. Though she was harsher about the coming out scene, more making fun of it, though she liked some comments disagreeing with her, so she's open to other ideas, even if she doesn't always state them in her videos (and also at that time, she was closeted/figuring herself out, so that may have influenced her feelings).
For more technical reviews, maybe CrimsonRogue? He has a day job, so he doesn't update regularly, and it's obvious he has major squicks, like when reviewing one of Onion Boy's books which has a 11(?)yo protag and dates a 15(?)yo girl, and for the bit, he puts on latex gloves to touch the book and keep reading. I like how he talks about world building, character development, and sometimes more technical stuff like sentence structure/dialogue/etc. He's been doing more "bad book reviews" recently, so good if you like seeing common beginning author mistakes or just like salt. Same with his "the book was better" series.
I saw someone mention Dominic Noble, and I agree, but his ability to step back from certain kinks and view it without obvious discomfort... well, in his 50sog he admits that due to circumstances involving loved ones, he cannot understand the kink, but he does also talk to someone who participates in the kink scene, and he focuses on James not understanding that the relationship is toxic as the bigger problem, which I appreciate.
Anon mentioned preferring technical reviews I think, but in case anyone else is curious and enjoys sweeter/not salty reviews, booksandlala reps the polite Canadian stereotype is a good one. When talking about any potentially problematic things in books, she states that it's either to her personal tastes, her understanding of the topic at hand, or how it might make some uncomfortable if she were to rec the book to someone. Her book vlogs can be nice to keep as background noise, and her shocked face at a twist can be funny lol, especially if I know the book she's reading and what twist she just reached lmao.
for anon!

16. What is the most over-hyped book you read this year?
not to be a hater but little fires everywhere by celeste ng. also (this was technically last year but i have to say it) i hated the house in the cerulean sea SO MUCH literally the most boring sterilized soulless deeply troubling in its political messaging book i have ever read
21. Did you participate in or watch any booklr, booktube, or book twitter drama?
i tried watching "booktube" essays on why certain books suck multiple times but the criticism itself was always so poorly argued that i ended up siding with the author on principle 😔 i do watch a canadian booktuber called emmie a lot because i like her vlogs but i actually skip the book related ones because i only respect my own opinions and those of my tumblr mutuals

Tag Game!
Thanks for the tag @fireladybuckley 💛💛💛
Name: Alexandra
Star Sign: Aries sun, Aquarius moon, Capricorn rising (yes I am that bitch)
Height: 163 cm
Time: 5:07 pm
Favorite bands/artists: Olafur Arnalds, Rammstein, Solar Fields
Last Movie: Uhhhhhhhhhhhh I don’t watch movies very often. I think my last one might also have been Encanto tbh.
Last Show: Umbrella Academy (full rewatch!)
When did I create this blog: September 2011. It was my first semester of Uni. It’s all been downhill since lol
What I post: I’ve devolved to shitposting almost exclusively.
Last Thing I Googled: NGL (that anonymous question app)
Other blogs: @youre-on-a-starship and I don’t remember the others. Also @inkandfig is my “official website.”
Do I get asks: essentially, no
Following: too many, lol, I’ve been here for a very long time.
Instruments: Piano and once upon the time, the flute. I just bought a violin and it’s going *poorly*
What I’m wearing: A pseudo-sweater (its below 20 today!), jeans and a crystal pendant that makes me feel like I’m a little more in control of my life than I actually am.
Dream job: Realistically, just a writer. I’d also love to be an interpreter, but none of my second languages are up to scratch.
Dream trip: Anywhere in Scandinavia (I’m going to Iceland for my honeymoon [hopefully] next year) or Germany
Nationality: I’m a Canadian citizen but I’m German/Austrian/Slovenian. I think I’m actually eligible for German citizenship but I haven’t pursued that because that takes brain power I can’t spare atm.
Favorite songs: Back to the Sky by Olafur Arnalds is a current favourite, also the whole soundtrack for Disco Elysium
Last book I’ve read: This is How You Lose The Time War by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️). Actually this is a good time to plug my YouTube channel, Ink & Fig, which is a booktube channel. It’s a fun place.
Top 3 fictional universes I’d like to live in: Star Trek, Umbrella Academy (as a person with a power, probably) (also yes, I know the world keeps ending, it’s fine, don’t worry about it), aaaaannnnddddd… the Grishaverse.
Idek who lives here anymore so if you see this, you’re tagged. Also I tag specifically @grimmarray because I like bothering you.

SKDJD no I don't mind the questions sweetness! I'm flattered really!
I watch a few booktubers too, mostly Hannah? (A clockwork reader?) But I had to read a tonne of classics during my degree. My favourites will always be Jane Eyre and pride and prejudice but that's cos I'm a romantic lmao. I did recently just buy a gorgeous copy of little women too. (Hey if you ever fancy buddy reading a classic together I'm 100% down for that, you just let me know what you'd like to read and we can do that!)
Oh it's okay if you don't recognise any of it! Some of that art we've got the original copies of. Proserpine, the blind girl, Boer war etc, very expensive lol.
Don't worry about asking too many questions and sharing stuff I love everything you have to show or even ask me. ^_^
Oh, yay, awesome, cool! :D
I've definitely heard of her! I watch Kate Pfeil and bookroast a lot! I also listen to booksunbound - it's a podcast by two Canadian women in the mid 20's. They're really fun! WAIT YES! You're the one who was posting a lot about p&p a few months back! Do you have any books that you buy lots of different copies of? Bet, I would love to do a buddy read, maybe then I'll actually read them. :') Let me find some time this week to figure out which classics I have, see which ones you have and are interested in reading, and we'll go from there? And if there's one you really want to read that I don't have, I will ALWAYS take an opportunity to go to the bookstore. :)
I looked those up, and I just... like the ORIGINALS?! That's just so cool. Do you like making any of your own art? Yeah, I BET they're expensive. :')

A Look At: Deer Heart
Deer Heart was written in third person past tense. It was written by Bonnie Burnard. The main character is the mother. Her daughter, the queen, deer, and bar people serve as supporting characters. Jargon: half-ton, pluggers, wheatland, embossed, emblazoned. A Half-Ton is a truck that weighs 1,000lbs or more. A pick-up truck would be an example of this kind of truck. Pluggers in this context…
