It's Fine Press Friday!
Today's book includes text from an old English folk song with prints by Polly B. Johnson of the Press of the Unseen Unicorn in San Antonio, Texas entitled The Fox. The Fox is a traditional English folk song, the earliest versions of which are from the 15th century and written in Middle English. It is number 131 in the Roud Song Index. This song has also been used and modified throughout the modern age, and has been covered by popular musicians and groups from 1950s to today.
The story is about a fox that goes into a town to terrorize the people and animals living there, while also gathering food for his family living outside the town limits. As the fox goes back to his family, the children exclaim about how wonderful the food he has gathered from the town is, and request that he go back frequently for more exploits.
The Fox was printed with hand-set Masterman type using a Golding Pearl Letterpress on Teton Text Paper, except for the black paper, which is Canson Mi Teintes paper, in an edition of 50 copies. The prints were made using linoleum, wood, and torn chipboard. The cover is made of a rough woven cloth and includes a bone that was boiled, washed, and soaked in Clorox, and dipped in shellac. Our copy is another gift from the estate of our late friend Dennis Bayuzick.

besides drawing in sketchbooks, I also love making them. especially very smol ones. the first six are all made of watercolor paper, meant for watercolor but I draw with oil pastels in them because I don’t want to use watercolors now lol smallest is about 1.5 inch I believe, middle is 2 iches and “big” (lol) is 2.5 inches the three on the bottom of pile are A6 size, made with canson mi teintes paper, one has only white paper, the other cold toned colors, and the other other warm toned colors

This was born out of a real desire to buy a tablet. Recently I have seen a lot of really vibrant colored (mostly digital) art on my socials. At the same time I was also experiencing some frustration getting bright colors to standout in any of the painting I have been doing (lots of reasons). Naturally I too wanted to have bright non muddied colors.. and I almost caved in and purchased a tablet. Luckily I remembered I had a few sheets of nice toned paper and sweet sweet prisma colored pencils. I through some portraits together quick (yes its the same model, I was being proficient) and mocked up two separate color pallets to try out. I am actually, for once, really pleased with how this all came out for only using Canson Mi-Teintes paper maybe a handful of times prior to this. Lots of fun, probably will revisit this method again and again now. The only casualty was one cool shaped sharpener. RIP.

I Love your art! Would you be willing to explain a bit about how you use dry pastels in your work? Your wips occassionally show up in my feed and they are stunning
Hi! Thank you so much!!
I’m still learning about the pastels in a class I’m taking so I’m no expert. Also, I use paper that’s proper for charcoal and pastels (canson mi-teintes)
I use charcoal as base and then the dry pastel bars to do a basic overall value study, smudge with fingers. (Charcoal helps spreading the dry pastel. Makes it smoother).
Tumblr media
Then, I come in with the dry pastel pencils to refine the work. Sometimes I need to use a concentrated charcoal bar to get the super black values.

Please note that I only learnt how to use grayscale yet!
Hope that answered your question! I’m still learning as part of the oil painting classes I’m taking.

Well, I finally got on with it and got this picture finished. Just the final stage to go, which is looking at it over the next day or so and deciding if it needs anything and if it's worthy of my shop. It needs a name. Any ideas? This was painted using Sennelier and Unison soft pastels on Canson Mi-Teintes Touch pastel paper. It's a big one for me A3 and will have to be priced higher than most of my pieces, soz! #RedDeer #Landscape #PastelPainting #landscapepainting #ScottishArtist #softpastelpainting #pastelartist #stag #deer https://www.instagram.com/p/CktZ2C1LfG7/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Standing Female Figure on Blue Paper
Normally, I use newsprint paper for gesture, but occasionally I feel like adding some color with toned paper. I used blue Canson Mi-Teintes paper for this drawing. However, I think it’s a little too dark for charcoal alone. Still, it’s a good practice and experiment!

“Girl In A Straw Hat” This is a sketch done in soft Rembrandt pastel on a blue/gray Mi-Teintes paper by Canson. I mostly was interested in capturing the dappled sunlight that shines through the holes in her straw hat. I’ll be posting the demo video soon.

Small Bites
Sometimes taking "small bites" of big ideas is the easiest way to accomplish them.
“To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream; not only plan, but also believe.“Anatole France After taking the month off in December, it has been a busy time for me as I return to what I will refer to as my ‘normal’ life of making my living through my creative home-based business. I thoroughly enjoyed my downtime. As there was little pressure and I was able to catch up with…
