More Murdlore!

There’s actually some more offscreen stuff going on in the story that may not end up being written down. For example:

There’s this one cat who’s cheated death and has been around for centuries. This lad isn’t the nicest and acts as one of the antagonists for the main story. This guy also happens to be the fellow who messed up the original clan cat structure!

Clan cats were originally instinctive, feral, and tuned into the world around them. Including the two magic sources. Instead of taking sides, the clans found a balance between the two magics and each clan was blessed with a great skill.

Mister Evil Butt shows up one day and as a huge disciple of Heights. Is Disgusted by this impure magic and Ruins Everything. Via serval schemes, he managed to, well, colonize the clans and have them focus their magic more towards the Heights.

But Mister Evil Butt gets a big head and eventually declares himself the true god of all these cats and [Redacted] happens which leads to the forming of the Citadel.

So there’s a few cat group names being used here:

Citadel: the main characters home group

Clans: the very original group of cats

The Colonies: Mister Evil Butt’s version of the Citadel

Rainer Party: a currently secret group I haven’t talked about hmmmm but it does ruin the C group names which works perfectly considering [even more redacted]

The Circus: another mysterious group!

More general group names that don’t signify a group with a select magic system.

Colony/Clowder: often used by outsider cats but in a loose sort of way

Chosen: used by breeder/show cats to brag about how they were chosen by the humans

Crew: groups of tough stuffs tend to use this. Like rogues.

Caravan: groups of traveling cats that don’t care to stay in one place, but prefer the company of others instead of living the life of a loner

Coal Coats: sometimes called Coals. Are groups of cats that live on the railway.

Five Stars

I have no words. I'm extremely glad I made myself read this slowly and savor the story instead of rushing through in a day or two. This is a story that deserves to be savored. All the intricate details and bits of foreshadowing are so much clearer when the book is taken slowly. This is a book for book lovers. A story with a delicious mix of mystery, mythology, and magic.

Zachary was such a great character. He starts off as a bit of a bookish isolated student who missed a chance at a big adventure and once he learns of what he could have had is desperate to find answers. Dorian has my whole heart. There was just something about him from the moment he appeared on the page that made me love him. Perhaps it's because we both share a love of myths and folklore and a desire to meet the moon. Mirabel was an enigma, in the beginning, I worried about her toeing the line into a sort of manic pixie dream girl but she was just so much more. The delightful cast of characters also includes a one-eyed painter who has seen the future, a sentient kitchen, and a whole clowder of cats.

The layout of the novel was part of what made me fall in love with this book. Interspersed between Zachary's story are other stories and histories and even nightmares. As the novel progresses each story starts to build upon itself and the larger picture comes together. I love this sort of sprawling narrative that leaves clues and allows me to feel smart as I think I've uncovered part of the mystery. The stories themselves are beautiful, filled with lush descriptions and cover everything from how one becomes an acolyte of the Starless Sea to a love story between a pirate and a girl to snippets of nightmares, written down and tossed into hidden corners. I was nervous to read this book because I adored Morgenstern's first book, The Night Circus and I worried about this one measuring up. It exceeded my wildest expectations and Erin Morgenstern will now be an auto-buy author, even if it's another eight years before she publishes another book.

Postcards from Snagglepuss: Caught up in New York at the Festive Season

...and with residual winter's snow to boot, not to mention a fondness for classic New York-style delicatessen rather than haute cuisine; don't ask why, but it just seems delicatessen is more my line. Especially if it's corned beef, pastrami and Swiss on a chewy Jewish rye bread somewhat peculiar to New York (and promptly recalling a late-1960's ad campaign in the subways, about the time of Scooby-Doo, the Banana Splits even, proclaiming "You don't have to be Jewish to love Levy's Jewish Rye Bread").

For some bizarre reason, though, New York City at the Festive Season ("War on Christmas" be d***ed) has something of a special magic all its own, as if the Christmas tree in Rockefeller Centre and the displays along Broadway and Fifth Avenue's shops (or what seems to remain therefor) weren't magical enough. And besides, credit the Collin Street Bakery of Corsicana for having made possible the holiday shopping with their fruitcake, the one and only Original DeLuxe to be specific, for my fellow Funtastics. (Including a certain Loopy DeLoop as is fond of sending over soft maple sugar from his Estrie sugarbush during the maple sugar season in La Belle Province; M. DeLoop tells me that he chose maple sugar as the gift of choice over maple syrup because such might be easier to handle in transit than the glass bottles preferred for choice Quebecoise maple syrup. Or so he thinks. Besides, one can prepare their own maple syrup at home with his maple sugar, and not that thin and watery simulation prepared from Crescent Imitation Maple Extract, if you know where to locate it.)

As if Times Square, no doubt one of several places fond of calling themselves "The Crossroads of the World" (I've also heard the appellation applied to Hollywood and Vine in Los Angeles, Piccadilly Circus in London or even the forecourt of the Shinjuku railway station in Tokyo), didn't have a special nighttime magic of its own thanks to all the signage, I thought it worthwhile to take the subway down to South Ferry and board the Staten Island Ferry to see the nighttime Manhattan skyline resplendent in a light haze of snow. And for its 20-minute crossing to the St. George Terminal on said Staten Island, I seem a little ... beyond myself seeing Manhattan's nighttime skies of the Financial District especially. And thanks to a short return trip, yours truly was able to get another subway to the Promenade in Brooklyn, off Montague Street even ... close to Downtown Brooklyn even more.

And what a surprise thus awaited me in observing the winter nighttime skies of Manhattan, skyscraper office lights reflecting somewhat in the light-falling snow: It turned out that Top Cat and clowder were also on said Promenade, also drinking in that view most wonderfully New Yorker. All the while managing not to get chilly in spite of ... which, at any rate, would be rounded out somewhat in a donut shop in the general area of Montague Street and Cadman Plaza West. An all-night donut shop, even, replete with particularly fresh coffee to keep one's body and mind warm through a snowy New York Festive Season night at the counter, with a somewhat crazy waitress working the owl shift and having to deal with the inevitable night-shift regulars she has to cope with. Even in Brooklyn.

I saw a challenge to turn your OC into a pokemon, so after a whirlwind of inspiration, I turned my OC Jingle into the 2 stage fairy/fighting pokemon Jingle and Jangle. It is inspired by my OC Jingle (of course), a jack-in-the-box toy, and kick boxing.

Jingle starts as a single fairy type pokemon. The noise the bells on its ears and tail make as it walks around attracts nearby pokemon, so it quickly learns how to fight. It uses its feet and tail as weapons. After gaining enough experience, it evolves into Jangle, gaining the fighting type. This pokemon can balance on its tail, winding it up like a spring to deliver devistating kicks!

This pokemon's main ability is cute charm, and its hidden ability is scrappy.

And, of course, it only makes sense to make the shiny variation classic Jingle colors❤️💛💙
