There's a line in Dundee when Connor is asking Logan for a family story after discussing Ewan. Logan dismisses him and says "What, you want a bit about, old fucking Rosebud? Rosebud is a dollar bill. It's whatever it took to get me the fսck out of here." It's a Citizen Kane reference, and it's used similarly here like it was in the movie, a phrase that no one (yet) knew the meaning of. In the movie it's the utterance of a dying man, which is later revealed to be the name of his childhood sled and the meaning it holds is the familiarity of his childhood, back when things were innocent. It represented a pivotal moment in Kane's life. Logan's Rosebud being his deceased sister, a remnant of the past life he lived, and some sort of impetus that got him out of that situation, he tells Connor this as they're surrounded by memories of Logan's past. I thought it meant something that he says this Rosebud line right after Connor mentions his deceased mom. I don't think Logan has ever used that fact to needle Connor, and this is a guy who thrives in insulting and browbeating his kids, sometimes even physically. Connor is treated different, maybe even a bit more delicately, with the age gap from his siblings, as well as being somewhat of an outsider to the Roy succession squabble. He can freely accuse Dad of ignoring him, as well as ask for pocket change of 100 million dollars. I couldn't imagine Shiv Kendall or Roman pulling that kind of stunt. But I couldn't help but think Logan's relationship with mental illness in the family as well as his guilt over Rose's death go hand in hand. He covers up Kendall's shoplifting and has him placed in rehab (and removed at his discretion). Roman is sent to military school for his behavior, and there's many instances where Logan is asking his son to go fix himself. Whatever pivotal moment in Logan (and Ewan's) life that caused Logan to feel responsible for Rose's death, and that event beibg what got him out of Scotland and away from his uncle, I feel, is tied to mental illness as well. It's displayed in the way he's trying to manage their neuroticisms and also gaslight them into thinking they're perfectly fine. Logan even tells Iverson that "your dad was okay, you know?" when reading the book to him. There could be many reasons why Logan doesn't mention Connor's mother much but there's shimmers in that sort of guilt he holds over Rose, over his sons being fucked up, and over Connor. I couldn't help but see that same sort of guilt beneath the surface any time Logan and Connor talk. And that same kind of guilt, "I am responsible for a death", is what Logan can share with Kendall and get his hooks into him after the car crash. It's pretty telling that it took that kind of dragging Kendall down to his level to be able to show an inch of parental affection.
