"Welcome be, you who seek understanding"
Scholar, Priest, or perhaps Historian reading these passages: before you lies a record of the diseases and plagues of our Eternal Kingdom of Hallownest, compiled by yours truly.
In leaving these times behind, I hope to ease, or to save, the life of those struck by these sufferings— or perhaps to help shed further light into a better path towards their definite cure.
Modeas the Researcher
KINGDOM PATHOLOGIA: A Record of the Ailments of Hallownest
- Part 1: Fungal Plague
- Part 2: Crystal Poisoning
- Part 3: SleepWalkers (wip)
- Part 4
——————————————————————
Felt like making a mockup on the style of fangamer's Wanderer's Journal of a medical record from the times of Hallownest's prime; while I will do my best not to contradict canon, have in mind this work will consist mainly of headcanons.
Please note that this is a fanwork, one written and drawn by me, in no way affiliated with Team Cherry.
You can check on sketches and WIPs of this and other projects ahead of public release (and/or just support me in general) at my Kofi page

Hi! Welcome to Project SEKAI facts!
Tumblr media
This account posts daily facts and trivia about Project SEKAI! I occasionally do longer analysis/content overview posts as well as some event speculation.
This account is currently operated by one mod and is scheduled to post daily at 4pm UTC. Bonus facts may be posted if I find something interesting in newly released content.
Please ask before reposting my stuff.
Hope you enjoy your visit!
↓ Submissions & Asks info + more below cut ↓
Submissions are welcome!
Rules:
Must be canon or otherwise official - Content from any server of the game (including cards, stories and songs etc), music videos, Petit SEKAI, official artwork or 4komas is OK! I will also accept content from the anthology mangas and magazine articles. In other words everything is fine except fandom stuff/unofficial fanworks.
If the fact is related to Vocaloid/Virtual Singers, it must be relevant to Project SEKAI in some way.
No leaks - Leaked content is usally low quality and I will not be able to post the fact until the content has been released officially, so I'd rather you didn't submit it at all.
Please submit a source for your fact - a screenshot, image, video or link is OK! If you don't have any then that's fine, but please at least tell me what story/card/etc is the source so I can get the screenshot/image myself.
If the source is not available on the EN or JP server, or is not available online, please attach an image/video! - I only play on the EN and JP servers, and will only be able to get screenshots and recordings of content available on those servers. If your fact relates to content exclusive to any other server or is from a physically published source and you do not provide an image/video, I will not accept the submission.
Asks are also open if you have any questions about a fact or if you have any general questions for me. Due to the incredibly overwhelming amount of asks I get nowadays, it is impossible for me to answer everything. Sincerest apologies for that. I still try to answer as many as possible but it could take a while for your ask to get a response. Also please do not ask me about shipping.
Tagging
Characters are tagged Firstname Lastname (excluding Vocaloids). For example, facts about Ichika will be tagged as Ichika Hoshino.
Events will be tagged using the translations from the Project SEKAI wiki, rather than the official English names. This is just for consistency so I don't have to go back and redo tags whenever EN changes a title.
The media will also be tagged (e.g: Hatsune Miku: COLORFUL STAGE or Petit SEKAI)
Full tag list linked in description
Send me an ask/comment if you need anything trigger tagged. Triggers will be tagged "trigger tw". Flashing lights is the only thing I actively tag atm.
Repost policy
I literally just post trivia I’m not gatekeeping that from you
I do ask though that you don’t copypaste my posts. Mainly because it undoes fomatting and removes any sources I linked in most cases, but also in the same way teachers say it just write in your own words rather than copying mine
Don’t repost my essays at all but that should be a given
Sharing a link the original tumblr post is always fine

TOTAL # OF COMPLETED WORKS/FANDOMS WRITTEN IN
Six completed works written for the Sauron (Halbrand)/Galadriel (Haladriel) fandom, The Rings of Power
OVERALL THOUGHTS
it's like I can't consume media anymore without being like "*leonardo dicaprio meme* this could be a Haladriel AU!"
PERSONAL FAVORITE?
I'm going to say living la dolce vita (I’ve been saving all my summers for you), mostly because of the amount of work I put into it. Honestly, I never thought I'd finish it! I restarted this story six or seven times — I just could not find the voice. But I am so pleased with the outcome. I think of everything I've written this year, this story really underscored to me that, beyond "flashes of inspiration," writing is a lot of hard work that needs consistent attention and practice!
MOST UNDERAPPRECIATED?
I definitely think this one is it's a dangerous game, my Dr. Jekyll and Hyde AU. I initially started writing this for a Gothic-themed challenge, abandoned for a bit, then finished in a flurry for Haladriel Week. This fic is also a close second for my favorite of the year. I love a Gothic aesthetic and I made sure this story was chock full of it. I was also so purposeful with my writing voice for this story and, to me, it doesn't sound like anything else I've written.
MOST POPULAR?
Oh without a doubt, lend me some sugar (I am your neighbor)!
STORY WITH THE SEXIEST MOMENT?
I mean, this is so subjective, but I think the somnophilia scene from it's a dangerous game takes the cake for me! I wrote it in one sitting during my lunch break and my god was it hard to go back to work after this...
An excerpt from the end of the scene: Instead, he adjusts her skirts and melts into the darkness, leaving her as he found her; boneless and wet, flushed with heat and ripe for the taking.
MOST FUN STORY TO WRITE?
Fun is a strong word, but I was the story I felt was most fulfilling to write was tell me something true (or tell me nothing at all). I already had some of the template letter concepts in my notes from a twitter conversation much earlier in the year, and expanding on them, while building the scenes around them, was a really fun exercise.
HARDEST?
I'm not going to lie, most of them! I used to be the type of writer who would have one flash of inspiration, write it up at a mad sprint, then quit writing until I was struck with another mad idea. I wrote for so many prompt and themed challenges this year that I was required to be more intentional about story building and more consistent with my writing — even when it was hard, even when I hated everything I wrote down. Felt a lot like muscle training at the gym!
BIGGEST SURPRISE?
My output really surprised me!! I complain to my therapist all the time that I'm shit at finishing things, but it's hard to deny the truth when it's staring me in the face: six complete stories, two wips that I will complete! And not just the quantity of my output, but the quality too. I am proud of, and really like, everything I published!
I mean, don't ask me how my social life is going lol, but at least my writing life is going well!
DID YOU TAKE ANY RISKS IN WRITING THIS YEAR?
Dipping my toe into Dark Fics for sure, which is new for me. But beyond that, just engaging with the fandom as a whole! I firmly believe that writing/story-telling is a communal activity and I am beyond grateful to have found that community. It's the first real fan-space I've been a real part of, and it's definitely improved my writing.
MOST UNINTENTIONALLY TELLING STORY?
My life is too boring to translate to fic lol. But I did not have to dig very deep to write the depression beats in living la dolce vita (I’ve been saving all my summers for you). A lot of what Galadriel goes through — the listlessness, the anger, the selfishness — is stuff I also struggle with during depressive episodes.
FAVORITE LINES/SCENES?
I like them all lol but these are a few that I know others, including my fiancé, have really liked:
dig up the bones (but leave the soul alone): “My lady, if I had a dragon’s tooth for every time you told me not to worry while you went careening off into peril, I’d have a smiling crown for my troubles.”
lend me some sugar (I am your neighbor): And she shatters, then, like glass; a thousand glittering pieces sailing off into the light. Irreparably damaged, ground to dust — edges sharpening as they fall into a mosaic of destruction. There is no end and no beginning. A lifetime of little deaths folding in on themselves, one on top of the other.
tell me something true (or tell me nothing at all): I am drowning in this ocean of blood. And you — you are not here to pull me to the surface as you once did. How could you, when you are wave and anchor both?
there is a light (and it never goes out): She can offer him no words of comfort, no platitudes to ease his sorrows. But she can offer this. The soft touch of her lips to his, the gentle stroke of her fingers across his cheek. She cannot mend a broken heart, but she can hold it for a while, cup it in her palms and keep it safe. She can pour her light into his darkened soul, weave together a dream where they are bound and they are whole. If only just this once.
MY FAVE PART OF FANDOM IN 2023
Literally just having this fandom. Having this community of wonderful, kind, incredibly talented people I can talk to, get advice from, brainstorm with!! I have made so many wonderful friends and I will be forever grateful.
2024 WRITING AMBITIONS
I want to continue developing a consistent writing habit, preferably once a day. Ideally, I'll become to type of girlie who wakes up at 5am and writes for two hours before work, but let's be real, I'm way to sleepy for that!
I also want to focus on two specific things: writing faster and writing less. First, I am, in my eyes, a slow writer — without that "flash of inspiration," it can take me a few days to write a single scene. Mostly because I do not follow my own advice and have to get everything perfect in the first draft. Second — as you can see from this post!!! — I have always been the type of writer who goes "why use one word when you can use ten?" I want to be able to write shorter stories without feeling like I'm compromising on my vision.
2024 FICS ON THE IMMEDIATE HORIZON
chapter two of there is a light (and it never goes out)
the immortal soulmates AU
dig up the bones (but leave the soul alone)*  (which I think will be on hiatus until I can get a few chapters ahead before posting).
Thanks to @liminal-zone for the format, @conundrumoftime and @thecoziestbean inspiration!

Behind-The-Scenes for Pride & Justice: Turning a Fanwork Original
A lot of people disparage fanfiction writers turning their ideas into original works, and I think the reasons for outcry are often misguided. Yes, “filing the serial numbers off,” the most common method for publishing a fanfiction as an original work, consists of doing very little outside of changing the names of the characters and some light editing to make sure the plot stays the same. Yes, fanfiction and genre writing are different mediums with different rules. While fanfiction can be structured the exact same way as an original manuscript, it’s very rare. But fanfiction is a genuine artform, a medium for telling a story. Just as a book can be adapted for screen, or a movie can be adapted for the stage, a fanfiction can be adapted for an original work. You just have to treat it like what it is: an adaptation.
I thought I would document my process here, give you a behind-the-scenes tour, of how I’m turning Pride & Justice: the fanfiction into Pride & Justice: the novel. You may have already seen hints of this on my Tumblr, but I’m going to go much deeper than moodboards and backstories here.
[Check out my Ko-Fi to keep reading!]

so...... ⚾ Blaseball, huh?
see the thing with putting all my work in a one-last-hurrah message in the fanwork channel is that i don't have enough characters left to talk about almost anything else. so INSTEAD here's a masterpost of my work i guess!
and it's all of the eyes on the way it's going
There was something... there was something they were supposed to say. Something they were meant to carry through the rift. Some information Wyatt Mason wanted to hold close to their chest, because it could change everything, if they just - but there’s nothing there except the same crackling static that would make them jump, if they felt alive enough for that. Wyatt Mason III was pulled through the Rift. Wyatt Mason III Localized into the Georgias' lineup.
2938 words, 1 chapter. Written before I actually had any real feelings or opinions on that wet little guy (said with immense fondness) & the first real piece of writing I did for Blaseball. I think I've gotten a lot better since this, but it's not bad, and I'm still pretty proud of the workskin I made for it.
for you, home is a cemetery
The light shining overhead casts everything in dangerous gold, and the players standing in perfect rank and file are no better and no safer: the Aequitas Representatives, here to take the challenge proposed by the Seattle Garages, here to remind a pesky little team what their place is and how foolish it is to fight a god. 6x200 snapshots of those terrible, brittle years, smothered and kept and preserved under a god's thumb for her purposes and her purposes alone.
1200 words (6x200), 1 chapter. AO3 says it's 1201 but it's lying I think. The Wyatts Mason, in a world where the Coin arranged their Localization and corporate drone teenagers scare the living shit out of me; inspired by @zayphora's original Aequitas AU.
you'll lead all your friends like lemmings to a slaughter
Season 14, Day 86. Wy█tt M██on III Ech█ed █yatt Mas██ ███ — ECHO Wyatt Mason III STATIC ECHO Wyatt Mason VIII STATIC
3387 words, 1 chapter. The aftermath of and it's all of the eyes on the way it's going. Wyatt Mason III Three hasn't even picked an actual name yet besides 'not Wyatt', and they've only been alive for fourteen days, but they know they're not walking off that field at the end of this game. Written after I'd been playing them on Twitter for some time, so it's a lot more consistent with a lot of things!
i'm no ghost, no fool
The first thing David Gray needs you to know is that their name is not David Gray. (is this worth crying for? is stepping up to bat worth dying for?)
2852 words, 1 chapter. Dialogue-only. In a Short Circuits world, Atlantis Georgias shadows player David Gray has some things they need to get off their chest, and a Fan's the only person who can hear them say it (literally). Good thing they can spot a Fan at a hundred paces.
a short list of stars that died this year (or: i’m screaming every requiem i know at the suns)
i’m screaming every requiem i know at the suns & someone is singing a mourning song. Nagomi Nava reflects, after the end of the world.
6967 words, 2 chapters. Written as part of the Sunbeams' 2022 Solstice exchange for orionexperiment#0951. Nagomi Nava experiences the Semi-Centennial, makes an odd friend in Tillman Henderson while she's at it, and makes her way through Season 24 and the end of the universe. This thing fucking rocks honestly, I don't even think it reads too well but I'm incredibly proud of it still.
radio station 19.14
11666 words spread across two fics. Written for the Tokyo Lift Fic Exchange. Jessica Telephone Voicemail and Wyatt Mason (Season 14 birth) Jasmine Mason have a midnight talk about not being that person you took your name and face from, and what it means to be you, and the team that loved a girl they barely even got to know. Fics can be read in any order. Includes:
the only way i know how to say sorry is "better luck next time"
One day, in the static she hears every time she picks up a phone, she hears a voice. The voice doesn’t sound like Jessica Telephone. If it did, she’d put the phone down immediately; deals like the kind Jessica made can’t really be taken back, but that was a determined girl, and she’d make a determined haunt, too. But it doesn’t sound like her voice, or her own, or otherwise. It sounds like a teenage girl. Jessica Telephone isn’t the only girl here who might as well be someone else's ghost.
5533 words, 1 chapter. I tagged this with Minor Parasocial Relationships / alt jess is weird about jessica. its parasocial its antagonistic its envious its Really Something / JESSICA ISNT EVEN HERE GIRL. WHAT ARE YOU HUNG UP ON and I stand by that. This is Jessica Voicemail's side of the conversation!
my theologies strewn out in the dark
At least she herself was able to say that’s not me, that’s my name, that’s not me, I want to be something else. She doesn’t think Jessica has said that, or maybe even thought it to herself; who wouldn’t want to be Jessica Telephone? From the outside, wouldn’t it be a gift, to live a life so rich? (Wouldn’t it be a gift, to be a splinter of a god who saw everything but never saw it coming? It always looks better from the outside.) Jessica Telephone isn’t the only girl here who might as well be someone else’s ghost: or, what that looks like from another camera angle: or, hey, who decides what the real Ship of Theseus is, anyway?
6133 words, 1 chapter. Jasmine's side of the conversation. Eldest daughter syndrome applies even if you're a weird sound ghost and Jas has got it bad. When she can't do anything, why would she ever let herself do anything less than as much as possible?
spinning on this infinite road
a collection of fics written for the game band's blasetober 2022 prompts, all written as 12x100s.
8675ish words, 6 chapters. Covers prompts THE BOOK, CERTIFIED BLASEBALL MOMENT, BIRDS, PEANUTS, A BLESSING, A CURSE, and PARKER.
oh, it's time for another vendetta
This is a body he hasn’t known since before the PODS. This is a body he had no say in leaving behind. This is a body that is his and is not his. York doesn’t know he’s crying until he feels the heat on his face. or: york silk backslides on his mental health recovery, because who ever put 'being eight years old again' in their twelve-step plan?
1628 words, 1 chapter. Set in Sonder's Salmon & Snake AU, where post-S24 the League resets back to S1 but with randomized rosters, and the only players who remember the original timeline are Hall Stars and Legends.
I've also done some ficlets from ask memes -- York Silk's protagonist halo & the vault's heel population, and Trip Mason & Jaybot and accepting the fact things won't get better. And I roleplay(ed) Wyatt Mason III & Siobhan Chark on Twitter!
Non-fanfic stuff I've made includes the following (it's 99% community-billboard stuff):
Tumblr media
Everything on this I can back up except putting the Wyatts and Wyatt Prime on separate levels.
Tumblr media
(at some point i WILL make a final version of this; this one doesn't include s24 + short circuits i think. but. yknow. it is what it is.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
mock takeovers for fan-entities the Archivist (the first two) & the Catalyst (the third one)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
propaganda for early expansion era -- i think this is s13-s14?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
late expansion era propaganda. the second one isn't even a good edit but i still think it's funny.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
propaganda for short circuits. we could've been the atlantis peanuts.... i wanted it so bad
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
& some coronation era propaganda. very happy with that first knight ump one.
...and then i also did some playlists (raw meat, static echo)...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and during coronation, i drew my design for mckinney vaughan...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...and i did a moodboard for MaX (Wyatt Mason X)...
Tumblr media
oh yeah and I also did text post memes. first set, second set, third set, georgias set.
it's been a good run, yall! onwards to whatever comes next. (& ofc i'll still be blaseballing -- i'll probably be playing around in this setting forever and ever.)

Something I've been thinking of a lot lately is my place in what could trepidly be called the BNHA fanfic community. Specifically with this. And there's something I've been dead set on for a long time, I figure I need to make this public at some point. So here we go, let me rip the bandage off.
A Hero Among Us is set to be my final contribution to BNHA fanworks. It is, for me, the culmination of what I started nearly half a decade ago with Villainy Club. Darkly comedic dramas that focus on the criminal underworld of hero society and the least savoury aspects of heroism as a business, filtered through the lens of a bunch of anarchic punks. Every story I've written followed this formula and iterated upon it. Villainy Club got the ball rolling with the critique of UA as an institution; One Running Leap looked at the outcasts of hero society, particularly in the view of an abandoned Izuku Midoriya; The War Of Villains carried on from Villainy Club, exploring how the world treats those who are labelled as villains; One More Betrayal was a cynical take on the UA traitor plotline and satirised how unnaturally quick the resolution to that story was; The Better Call Sako series depicted the decay of a man who was given everything and was corrupted and broken by the power gained from being near the very top as he realises that his life has been rigged from the very start; And finally, A Hero Among Us shows a protagonist who started out believing in the system with all his heart and is slowly turned against it.
With this, I have explored most every aspect of hero society that fascinates me, through a great many lenses. And finally, the end has come. I've done all I want to do. I am not standing down from BNHA fanfics because of the state of the manga, far from it; I have thought the manga was getting pretty shoddy since around the time I was writing the ending of Villainy Club and and more than half of my works have come since then. It's not because of drama in the community or any other sort or silliness. I've just said all that I want to. Moving forward, I would want to focus on my own original projects or perhaps fanfics for other series. We'll see. It means a lot to have built up a semi-consistent audience for my bizarre little stories and here's hoping things end on a high note. In light of this being my final work for the franchise, I've actually planned the ending for AHAU to be the closest thing to a happy ending any of my works have ever had. Time shall tell how that plays out.
Tl;Dr, AHAU will be my final BNHA fanfiction and once it is done, which may still be months away, I shall be moving on. I'll still shitpost about BNHA stuff here, though. I couldn't possibly imagine giving that up.

made one for Femt, because i don't think anyone would ask about him, which is very unfortunate
fun thing about Femt is that i think he's characterized slightly differently in all three media types (manga, anime, & light novel). the light novel makes him... grumpier and more nihlistic, it seems. he's consistently a loveable loser though, which i appreciate <3
there is this... tendency in fanworks i've noticed, that makes his canon personality only a fascade to hide a crueller nature, which i assure you is Not him. per the light novel, Femt actually lacks the active malice and misplaced ambition that characterize other kkss villains. he operates on his own set of values and aesthetic principles, that happens to be a bit alien from the norm. it makes writing story arcs for him harder, because he doesn't really have a large, ultimate goal driving his actions. but, it also proves him to be a pure and idealistic spirit, unfettered by common mores and unconcerned in pursuiting money, fame, or power.
(he's also actually a very sweet guy)
my gripe is that we have so little info of him. we know literally nothing of his past, or if he has any sort of family, or anything. (seriously, what's up with that scar on the back of his head???) i'm hoping the upcoming manga updates would fill some of the gaps.

honestly thought i was mostly over never getting that J&H endgame but I have to also admit that the trailer brought back too many bad memories and created this AU i could've easily gone without knowing. in the past few years i saw this new wave of jackie and kelso shippers (mostly due to the actors being together) but I still had J&K ending in s4 and Jackie choosing Hyde over him... and now it's just like waking up from a horrible nightmare thats become a reality. well at least we have your fics and comics, those are super special to me
well at least we have your fics and comics, those are super special to me
And your comment means a lot to me. ❤️
Once MK and AK got together romantically, I figured any continuation or reunion of T7S would pair J/K together. And that J/H would never be repaired on-screen. (Then a horrifying real-world thing was brought to light, and that clinched the forever OOC-ness of any T7S continuation.)
Actors ≠ the fictional characters they play.
Fictional characters ≠ the actors who portray them.
Jackie and Kelso bring out the worst in each other in T7S when paired romantically. That should be the driving force when writing those characters. Aggravatingly, it's not because $$ and other factors.
Going the opposite way, if Jackie/Kelso were great for each other on T7S, but their actors absolutely despised each other -- Jackie and Kelso should not be broken up because of that.
The relationships of fictional characters should not be dependent on the actors who happen to portray them.
If actors hired to play Romeo and Juliet in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juiliet in a production hated each other, the director would not allow Juliet, upon seeing Romeo's unconscious body and believing he's dead, say, "Welp, that's that, then. I'm going to the mall," and leave the stage alive.
Yes, I'm using a tragedy as my example. And it's not my favorite of Shakespeare's plays, either (lol). But in plays, TV shows, and movies, etc. the characters' truth must take precedence.
Hyde can never -- and should never -- be seen on-screen again. We all know why. But that doesn't mean his character shouldn't, and can't, be written about in a way that remains true to who Hyde actually is (according to his consistently written episodes in T7S S1-S7). Have other characters talk about him. T7S had characters speak about other characters and events we never saw on-screen all the time. It's not that difficult to do.
But I, and other fanwork creators, will continue to depict Jackie and Hyde's relationship in writing and art.
Speaking of which, I've got 192 @those70scomics left to draw (out of 201). So I better get on it. 😂

There are a lot of things we could ask.... but i'll keep it to just one.
What is a piece of fanwork that made you look at a canon character in a new light? It does not have to be homestuck related.
Now THIS is a difficult question to answer, a very good one though. Thinking about this is interesting.
It's a bit difficult for me to pinpoint how fanworks influence how I view the canon characters, because in a lot of the media that I like I don't actually tend to go out of my way to find fanworks. Usually I just like the character most the way that they are in canon.
So the fandom influence on how I view the characters is usually, if it exists, a kind of passive buildup of the general thoughts, opinions and attitudes surrounding that character. The opinions of any of my friends who also like the same story tends to influence my opinion the most, but not in complete totality.
I don't want to leave you with an answer that's just "I don't know" because this is a good question and it does get me thinking. It's just difficult to quantify because some of the most stand-out fanworks to me expand upon characters in ways that doesn't necessarily make me view them in a new light, but just strengthens my opinions on them.
A work like Liminal Space is visually stunning and definitely lets you see characters like Jade from angles you didn't really get as consistently in official material. My opinion on her before and after reading it is roughly the same though, if just stronger.
I guess the most solid answer I can give, is that what really makes me see a canon character in a new light is attempting to write them myself, something I'm not nearly as comfortable and accustomed to doing.

Things you’ll seeee in my WIPsss
[bonus points if you somehow read that title to the tune of “Things You See in the Graveyard” from Repo!]
Thanks @heymacareyna for the tag!
5 things you’ll consistently find in my WIPs (fanfic or original):
1. ANGST, SO MUCH ANGST. I don’t know why but this seems to be what I write lately. Infinite sads. Grief. Despair. But also like, hope-tinged angst?
2. Wuv. Twue Wuv. Yeah I’m a sucker for true love stories, so you’ll pretty much find one in anything I write. Even though these days most of them are tragic love stories.
3. If it’s fanfic, pretty tight canon adherence. Zero shade to folks out there doing like modern AUs and stuff that goes way off script because the world needs it!! But that’s just not the kind of stuff that lights my fire as a writer. Any fanwork I write, I’m usually doing it with the goal of having it nestle into canon in a way that feels truly believable. Forever trying to capture the themes, the timelines, the atmosphere of whatever the source material is I’m working from.
4. Honestly probably a semi-decent fight scene (or five). I actually really enjoy writing action sequences. For some reason I find them generally easy to envision and translate into words. They’re fun for me!
5. Hopefully some visceral, evocative language. That’s the goal, anyway. Whenever I’m writing (especially Tolkien fic), chances are I’m asking myself “What Would @brynnmclean Do?” re: word choice, sentence construction, etc. Because their writing is a WHOLE ASS MEAL and they do things with words that are just MAGIC.

and YOU, if you’re a writer and wanna share!!

Time to be predictable and say BUTTERS for the bingo
Tumblr media
Thank you for the ask and sorry this took 1,000 years!!! Putting this under a cut because it ended up being so long.
I have such weird mixed feeling about Butters, but first and foremost, I don't actively dislike him or feel he gets too much screen time now. There was a period during the airing of the mid-late teen seasons where I stopped finding the show as funny, and I definitely thought they were using him for too many hack jokes. So I associated him with my losing interest in the series, but he's just a lil feller and it wasn't his fault.
Some of the best, most cathartic moments in the series revolve around Butters - his speech that saves Bradley's life in "Cartman Sucks", his speech to Stan in "Raisins" (though where does he get off calling Stan a pussy and then starting an incel movement when his Canadian gf of a few months dumps him???), "Yeah!" in response to "Love doesn't follow a plan!" in TxC, his whole,,, everything in "Super Fun Time", the way he stands up to Cartman in "The Magic Bush", this moment:
Calling everyone a skank, ball chin boy, sassing Trent in the moments before disaster strikes. He's bold, he's ignorant, he's Butters.
I don't think everyone is wrong about him but me by any means, but I struggle with the way he tends to be portrayed in fanworks. He gets uwu-fied even harder than Tweek, and it's more perplexing to me in his case because this kid gets angry.
He represses a lot of rage because he internalizes the things his father teaches him, but his father's punishments are arbitrary, harsh, and contradictory, so of course he's all mixed-up. He's sweet and naive, but he's also angry, misogynistic, and tends to latch onto other more violent, dominant boys like Craig (in the early seasons) and Cartman.
I project most onto Tweek, and will sometimes joke about Butters that I made my choice re: abused fictional blond SP boys onto whom to project and I'm sticking with it. Butters honestly does trigger me because he's the abused kid who is unable to consistently grasp that he's being abused. That's very real. It's played for comedy obviously, but I just think this kid would have serious problems accepting love and dealing with his anger as an adult. You know how people ship Cartman with good mental health ironically? That's me with Butters unironically.
Anyway, because I feel insane having this many mixed feelings about a fake guy, I have a fic idea that will hopefully help me exorcise these demons and become slightly less insane. It's just a gen fic examining the home lives of Butters, Kenny, and Tweek.
Some fave Butterses from fics just because:
the Three Sides series by cocoacremeandgays (v heavy themes)
your princess is in another castle by delmareve
I find sycophantic little shit Butters in Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space by gremlinteeth extremely compelling
There's A Room Where The Light Won't Find You by PBJellie
More Effeminate Than You (orphaned)
pimp Butters in tweek doesn't wanna make some real motherfucking money by Tweekpuncher
(also for "why does he look like that", honestly, just,,,, wtf is up with the hair. i hate drawing it. every time i try to draw butters he looks like ellen degeneres. someone help plz)

What are your top 10 favorite ships ever? It doesn't have to be ordered but I'd like to see a ranking if you have one.
ty for asking! This is tentative and subject to change, but I’ll give it a shot based on what I’m feeling rn. Fair warning, I have pretty basic taste in fandoms lol, Berserk is kind of an anomaly for me, I usually get into fairly popular/classic stuff.
1. griffguts (berserk)
I’m putting this in the number one spot because I’ve been consistently into griffguts longer than any other fandom at this point, and I still keep coming up with things to say about them, and also the first fanworks I’ve ever posted publicly have been for Berserk so that has to count for something too. Plus they hit like almost every one of my favourite tropes, they really are the ideal ship.
2. fraser/ray v (due south)
One of those ships that’s not always at the forefront of my mind, but always periodically comes back to catch me off guard with how much I love it. I just love their kinda lowkey fucked up dynamic - Ray is self destructively loyal to Fraser and Fraser is self destructively loyal to his own sense of duty, and it’s something that’s legit explored in interesting ways on the show. But at the same time they just have great chemistry too. Also it’s like my number one comfort fandom.
3. hannigram (nbc hannibal)
Another ship that’s practically perfect in every way. Hannibal is the ideal show for me, and hannigram is just so good. Friends to enemies to lovers, corruption, incredibly together dude ruining his life for love, compelling shifting power dynamics... and the post season 3 fandom was just fantastic for a while, there were/are so many good writers into it and after season 3 they actually often wrote the ship they way I liked it. Plus it’s unsurpassed when it comes to funny tumblr posts.
4. wangxian (mo dao zu shi/the untamed)
More of a recent ship but one of the most fun fandom experiences I’ve had in a while. Tons of great fic, excellent dynamic, delightful canon in all its various forms and adaptations, and frankly, the f/f AU porn fic subgenre has been a fucking godsent oasis in the good f/f porn desert, it would be a top ship just for that. I would highly urge anyone who wants more tropey and unabashedly kinky f/f to check it out.
5. xena/gabrielle (xena: warrior princess)
Xena is another perfect show and Xena/Gab is one of those solid classic ships that’s just incredibly fun to watch. They’ve got so much chemistry, everyone involved in the show was on board with pushing the romance til it didn’t even count as subtext as far as I’m concerned, they had the range to go fun and light, epic and romantic, delightful and tropey, and/or dark and messed up depending on the season or canon AU variation lol. There’s a reason it’s the prototype for like 75% of lesbian romances written since.
6. doctor/master (gay configurations only) (doctor who)
It’s got it all! You want bitter exes who still pine for each other with that classic frenemies dynamic? Three/Delgado. You want villain menacing wide eyed ingenue? Five/Ainley. You want enemies living in weird domestic bliss? Shalka. You want beloved iconic hero fucking over all his friends and the entire Earth for mass-murderer dick? Ten/Simm. You want fluffy romance with ominous foreshadowing? Theta/Koschei. And that’s not even getting into all the fanon and cross-era configurations. It even has its own canonical f/f variation, and even though they weren’t allowed to actually interact on the show there’s at least some fic.
7. hawkeye/trapper (mash)
I’m revisiting this rn so it’s my current thing lol and these two are just wildly fun to watch together. The strength of the gay reading rivals any fandom classic but while most of those classics are like 90% affection and chemistry and 10% jokey gay references, Hawk/Trap is 90% affection and chemistry and 110% jokey gay references - smug ones, not disparaging ones, because the point was mainly to make fun of The Man lol. It’s a very entertaining vibe.
8. d/leon (pet shop of horrors)
Idk what it is about this ship but it’s sent me on multiple wild goose chases through the wayback machine trying to resurrect old fic, I’ve read a ton of the fic multiple times, I’ve read premises I usually wouldn’t be into, idk. It compels me. The ascerbic frenemies who coparent a kid together vibe is just too good.
9. jeeves/wooster (pg wodehouse books)
This is one of those fandoms that just has a lot of high quality fic that’s a lot of fun to read, and I appreciate that. Like, the source material is all about a dude’s valet saving him from accidentally getting engaged like 50 times so you know it’s gotta be homoerotic, and it is delightful that way. But really everyone mimicking PG Woodhouse’s prose to varying degrees in fic is always just an enjoyable reading experience.
10. victuuri (yuri on ice)
This is a tough call lol but man they really were the perfect ship at the perfect horrible time. I had my eye on the show while it was airing but I didn’t check it out until episode 8 - not 7, because while a kiss was great news I wasn’t too into the assumed dynamic of awkward anxious skater/flirty confident seductive coach. Episode 8 was when dom Yuuri made an appearance and that’s when I was like oh okay this is the fandom for me after all lol. Which was great because I got to watch the episode 10 twist in real time and that was one of the most fun fandom experiences ever.

1, 4, 14 for ship asks
1. list 3 positive things about your current fandom(s)
deathnote,,, full of very sweet, thoughtful people, including many good friends. there's a lot of good meta-analysis, some new, some old but still floating around. there's also just a really great group of super-talented authors and artists still making fanworks for it! which is honesty so inspiring and fun.
4. say something nice about a ship you don't ship (it can be another ship in your fandom, a mutual's OTP, etc)
mm. to be honest, i don't know that i actively consistently ship anything in deathnote except meronia (even my little beloved rarepairs really take a hardcore backseat) but i have been sold on several ships involving light (who i used to really dislike as a character but have grown to enjoy) solely due to the talents of my mutuals (i'll specify lawlight, mikalight, and mattlight). y'all are incredible fr fr
14. the ship that always makes you smile
hellcheer, still!! it's just so damn sweet :')

Spideytorch?
brutally honest ship opinion meme
Spideytorch is the m/m ship for people who like to do deep, complete continuity reads and compile coherent impressions of characters based on their totality. There's an incredibly strong case for it strewn one issue, sometimes one panel, at a time, over sixty years of crossovers in literally dozens of different titles. Spideytorch is for people who unironically enjoy comics from the 60's and then apply queer readings to them. I have consumed significantly more spideytorch content than reflects my actual relative investment in it because it's a cheat code for finding good 616 fanworks, and I'm not at all looking forward to the FF joining the MCU ruining this for me.
So like...for me the short version is "spideytorch is very real" and the long version is "but is it though??????" Like it is but it's this situation where Johnny is just as plausible a love interest for Peter as the many, many other people he has romantic chemistry with, whereas Johnny's secondary superpower is being an utterly inhospitable environment for any kind of romantic chemistry, so this like, actually means something, but more for Johnny as a character than Spider-Man as a property.
It's pretty standard, as much as anything can be within this incredibly small niche of media analysis, to interpret Johnny's absolutely nonexistent chemistry with every single female character who's ever been deliberately written as his love interest as him being gay, but by my read Johnny having romantic chemistry with men is also very rare. I generally address ask answers to the class, but you specifically and you alone have gotten the outline notes of the "Johnny Storm is on the ace spectrum" essay I promised I would write like...two...years ago...... so you know that I'm like, uh, having some thoughts about this.
Like I think if we lived in an alternate history that weren't heteronormative they would have been an item, but if we lived in one that also wasn't amatonormative Johnny wouldn't be wildly miscast in the role of a playboy in the first place, or would at least be written into this position with deliberation instead of largely by bizarrely consistent accident. Peter Parker might be the love of Johnny Storm's life, and the fact that I think Johnny isn't strictly allo (while Peter is like one notch below Zeus Tier on the ranking of extremely allo fictional characters) doesn't contradict that but it does make it weirder and more fraught. Peter falls in love if you say hi to him and this keeps him so busy he's never even fit noticing he knows next to nothing about queerness into his schedule. It's a confused doomed pining conflicted forever-angst fest but then you look at their actual dynamic and it's just the most comfortable bickering you have ever seen. Hell of a flavor happening here.
Like, if I'm ranking Peter love interests, Johnny is in like, the Betty Brant zone, but you need to know when I say that that I think Peter and Betty are great. They light up my life. Absolutely never going anywhere, but that's not the point. But also, you can't just make this comparison cold, because you need to correct for how only one of these ships actually gets to be a thing in official media, because society bad. But then that correction creates new problems and weakens the verisimilitude of your takes overall. Analyzing spideytorch is an endeavor in sociological studies. You know I kind of thought that when I came back from the break I took from answering these I would sound slightly less insane.

please read the article 'How White Fandom is Colonizing "Character-Coding"' by Shafira Jordan and quit while you're ahead
Okay, so I read it and see the problem, and I’ll try to address all their points in order because I don’t wholly agree with the article. I know it’s a lot to read so I’ve put tldr; sections at the end of each :)
Misusing the Term Reinforces Negative Stereotypes for Marginalized People
The article essentially argues that labeling characters which are villainous as POC-coded is bad because they’re not morally pure and doing so "reinforces the idea that people of color are naturally dangerous and not to be trusted.”
Which is fair as you don’t want all the representation to be of ‘bad’ characters, but I also don’t believe all representative characters have to be ‘good’ either as it would be equally racist to divide good/bad in such a way. Not that I would place Loki under ‘bad’ to begin with, but arguing that characters shouldn’t be labelled as POC-coded for reasons unrelated to what’s presented in the narrative or because they did bad things is :/ even if lack of good representation is a prevalent issue in current Western and influenced media.
Ideally there should be a range of representative characters that fall into ‘good’, ‘bad’, and ‘anywhere in-between’ because variety and complexity in character types should, in theory, be treated as common practice (which can only happen with a multitude of representation!).
And a bit unrelated but... within the fictional context of Thor 1, all the Jotnar (sans Loki) are presented to the audience as ‘bad’ by default. They desperately want to get their Casket back to the point of attempting stealing it (from the ‘good’ characters), they fight the heroes and even when the gang and Thor (’good’ characters) are enjoying or going overboard with taking lives it’s inconsequential, Laufey wants to kill the opposing king (who just happens to be a ‘good’ character) and will resort to low-handed methods to do so, etc. The narrative itself is from the frame of reference of the ‘good’ and we only see warriors of Jotunheim though so we understand why it’s like this, because regardless of their race/experiences the narrative carries, even if it most definitely would be seen as racist from our real-life perspectives if the ‘monstrous’ race were presented by actual people of colour, even if it would make sense for the people on on different realms living in different environments to be different from each other, and realistic even for that to be the root of some conflict.
tldr; not using a specific label to prevent negative presentations of the characters seems a bit strange to do when the coding would be based off the text, but with limited representation available I see why it would be done, even if I still believe minority-coding is free game to expand/interpret.
Improperly Labeling a Character as “POC-coded” Suggests the Experiences of All People of Color are the Same
The article argues that labeling Loki as POC-coded “suggests that all people of color have the same experiences, when in reality, people of color come from different places, have different cultures, and have different traditions.” And while it’s true that the term doesn’t go into detail about which particular experiences (and these experiences can vary vastly due to diversity!) the appropriate measure would be to remove the umbrella term POC altogether as people of colour tend to also vary. But that’s also exactly why it’s an all-encompassing general term? It’s a way to denote anyone who isn’t “white” and has the associated cultural privilege that comes with the concept of white supremacy.
And, obviously, in the fictional setting presented, the concept of white supremacy is not prodded at, but cultural supremacy is definitely one that makes recurring appearances, right next to the parts about Asgard being a realm built on imperialism with ongoing colonial practice.
My take on this is that Loki’s narrative features a struggle with identity after finding out he’s of a different race and was being treated differently his entire life and being Jotun was presumably a part of the reasoning even if he didn’t know it. He’s basically treated as of less worth for inherently existing differently. I do believe that racism is a common-enough POC experience, but that while Loki was born with blue skin he passes/appears white which is why I don’t say that Loki is a POC, just that he has been coded/can be interpreted this way.
There’s also the entire thing with Loki trying to fit in and prove he belongs by trying to fit the theory and be The Most Asgardian by committing genocide (which ultimately makes no difference as he’s still not the ‘acceptable’ version of Asgardian), and the denial/rejection of his birth culture in destructively lashing out towards them (which even Thor is confused by because Loki isn’t typically violent), and the fact his self worth plummets and he is passively suicidal upon finding out he’s Jotun (internalized racism? general drop in self-worth after finding out he’s adopted and has been lied to? Bit of both?), but what do I know, I’m sure none of those are, at their base, common experiences or relatable feelings for anyone or decent rep because we see such themes on-screen presented wonderfully in different lights all the time.
tldr; every set of experiences could be different, some types of discrimination could overlap, if you limit an umbrella term to only very specific circumstances then it’s no longer an umbrella term.
Suggesting that White Characters are Meant to be Seen as People of Color Ignores the Actual Characters of Color that are Present in these Stories
I don’t agree with most of this section, but that may just be the way the arguments are put together, which I don’t blame the author for.
“ Implying that Loki is a person of color completely ignores Heimdall and Hogun, the only Black and Asian Asgardians who appear in the movie. ”
Characters such as Hogun and Heimdall which are played by actual people of colour have smaller roles in the films and any prejudice they could face for being POC in-universe isn’t made apparent, while Loki at the very least comes to the realization that something he couldn’t change (race, parentage,) was having him treated differently his whole life and had to come to terms with it. The Vanir/Aesir are also both treated similarly on-screen, and Heimdall having dark skin isn’t plot relevant, whereas Jotnar are treated as lesser consistently and are relevant through the movie (breaking into the vault, Thor and co. attack Jotunheim, Loki’s deal with Laufey, the attempted regicide (and the successful one XD), destroying jotunheim, Loki saying he’s not Thor’s brother,).
I also see including characters as POC-coded as... more representation? In all canon-compliant interpretations of the characters Hogun being Vanir is always explicitly mentioned because it’s a fact that just is, up to the appearance and even the world-building of Vanaheim in some fanworks use particularly East Asian culture as inspiration. I have never come across a Marvel fandom Heimdall interpretation where he’s not Black... but because these characters are more minor/side-characters of course they get less attention!
“ In Loki’s fandom, Heimdall’s name sometimes gets thrown in to suggest that it was he all along who was the real villain due to his “racism” against Loki and the rest of the Jotun. It is, of course, ironic to suggest that somehow the only Black Asgardian to appear in the movie can oppress the privileged white prince. “
I... don’t know where to start with this. But the example of theorizing given in the article wasn’t suggesting Heimdall was bad or trying to explain his actions in Thor 1 by saying he is Black... and just looking at a character’s actions shouldn’t be done less or more critically because of skin tone in my opinion. Heimdall may have been trying to do what was best and protect the realm but if the audience didn’t know that Loki was up to dodgy things then the coding would be switched around because he was trying to spy and committed treason and then tried to kill Loki. People... can hold feelings towards others... regardless of skin... and suspect them... for reasons other than skin... although I do still have questions about whether Heimdall knew Loki was Jotun or not. (Even if I personally don’t think it’d make a difference to how he’d treat Loki?)
Some Loki fans have also suggested that because Jotuns have blue skin that this alone makes him a person of color (even if the audience is only allowed to see Loki in his true Jotun form for mere seconds of screentime). This, again, shows a lack of understanding when it comes to race. It doesn’t matter what skin color the Jotuns have.
Race can differentiate between physical and/or behavioural characteristics!! Not being blue all the time doesn’t make him any less Jotun!! He’s got internalized stuff to work through and is used to being Aesir!! At least 1 parent is Jotun so even if Loki was passing as Aesir he’s probably Jotun!! (I don’t know how magic space genetics work for sure but Loki being Jotun was an entire very important jump-starting point in Thor 1!!). It’s a fantasy text and typically things like having different coloured skin indicates a different race or is sometimes if a species has multiple then is just considered a skin colour. That’s how coding works!! The Jotnar are very specifically the only race we see in the movie with a skin-tone not within the ‘normal’ human range, which alienates them to the audience from the get-go!! They’re an “other” and on the opposite side to the ‘good’ characters.
Both Loki and his birth father, Laufey (Colm Feore), are played by white men, and it is impossible for a white man to successfully play a character of color.
The specification of men here bothers me, but yes, you don’t get ‘white’ people to play characters of colour if it can be avoided. (And it can be avoided.)
This also connects with the previous point made that people of color come from various places. There is nothing specifically about the Jotun that could be traced to any specific person of color, and even if there were, there would be no way for white men to portray them without being disrespectful.
This is where arguments about the definition of coding and how specificity/generalizations and do/don’t come in. I know I’m subjective and lean towards the more rep the better, but while I agree ‘white’ people wouldn’t be able to respectfully play a POC I don’t think that rule should have to carry over into fantasy-based fiction. I know texts reflect on reality and reality can reflect within texts, but if contextually there is racial discrimination and there are similar ideas which resonate with the audience’s own experiences I’d say it’s coded well enough to allow that.
tldr; Thor 1′s narrative revolves mainly around Thor and Loki, of which race is kinda kinda a significant theme in Loki’s part of the story. Not so much explored with less-developed side characters such as Heimdall and Hogun, even though their actors are actual people of colour.
How Much of this is Really Well-Intentioned?
In the fantasy space viking world Heimdall and Hogun don’t face any on-screen prejudice and their appearance is not mentioned (which is nice, for sure! good to have casual rep!) but adding on to the roles they play in the narrative the explicit fantasy-racism in the movie isn't aimed at Asian/Black characters, but towards the Humans -to a lesser extent- and the Jotnar, including Loki, who only just found out he comes under that bracket.
The article mentions how fandom space toxicity often “reaches the actors who portray the characters,“ which is true, and it’s shameful that people have to justify their roles or presences are harassed for the pettiest things like skin tone/cultural background, but I don’t see coding characters as removing the spotlight from interesting characters such as those which are actually POC, rather expressing a demand for more rep, since well-written complex characters which are diverse are often absent/minor enough in the media, and therefore can get easily brushed aside in both canon and fandom spaces.
tldr; It’s obviously not a replacement for actual representation, but, if a character is marginalized and can be interpreted as coded, even if they would only be considered so within the context of the textual landscape, I don’t see why spreading awareness through exploring the coding as a possibility for the character shouldn’t be done, even if the media is being presented by people who are ‘white’ or privileged or may not fall into the categories themselves, as long as it’s done respectfully to those it could explicitly represent.
#please don’t patronize me by asking to quit while i’m ahead#it doesn't help anyone#so anyway i've summarized my opinion on the coding thing here for the many anons whose answers could be answered in this ask alone#i think i covered everything?#the article started out okay but I found it kinda :/ in places even though there were valid concerns#I do believe that in-universe context and creators of the media should be taken into account#and that if marginalized themes can be touched on by non-marginalized groups then... great? fictional texts can help people understand#i do also think that rep being presented should if not on-screen have people working on the product to support and ensure it's done well#the world is cold and harsh and cruel and i just wanted a desi Loki AU but here we are#I've got to try and summarize how I think Thor 1 presents Loki's part of the narrative well with POC-coding there because of fantasy-racism#even if the POC-coding is ignored the themes of racism are far too apparent to ignore#loki spends the entire film being a multi-dimensional character and having an entire downfall fueled by grief and a desire to be loved#I don't think attaching a label to such a character would be a negative thing... but perhaps for casual watchers it'd be a bit :/#apparently not everyone takes into account the 1000+ years of good behavior around that 1 year of betrayal/breakdown/identity crisis/torture#MetaAnalysisForTheWin#MAFTW#ThisPostIsLongerThanMyLifeSpan#TPILTMLS#AgreeToDisagreeOrNot#ATDON#poc-coding#yes i ignored everything not about loki in the article what about it#hmmm I know people are going to disagree with me with what should and shouldn't be allowed#I know some people are okay with it but some don't like the poc-coding thing#and that's fine#completely understandable#makes me uncomfy to talk about fictional space racism in comparison to real life but I do think that lack of rep is why coding is important#for some people coding is all that they get#but also!! @ifihadmypickofwishes suggested the term racial allegory and I do believe that is also suitable here!! so I’ll try using that too#rather than poc-coding even though I still believe it applies
