This one hadn’t been on the “to read” shelf for too long, but I picked it up when I had to suddenly fly back to my sister’s place last month. I knew I would need something to read in transit & once I was there & I knew I wanted a piece of fiction. Always enjoyed the work of @jon_mcgregor & as my family was dealing with sudden struggles & tragedies, it was strangely comforting to read about another family going through very different struggles & tragedies. I just loaned this to a friend, so I don’t want to give too much away, but it begins in Antarctica, shifts to Chile, & finally to Cambridge, England. It’s beautiful & uses language in interesting ways, especially when language is very much failing one of the main characters. Beautiful World, Where Are You: A Review
Beautiful World, Where are you
I just finished reading Sally Rooney’s new book Beautiful World, Where are you. The book surprised me in many ways. I had expectations for it, not sure what, but expectations nonetheless. i guess i was thinking of some sad sally rooney character plot. I loved the two main characters, Felix annoyed me, but he was a very realistic character. Simon was the “decent” guy, and he seemed sexy and charming, but he pushes eileen away. Eileen sounded very annoying, but in a “she’s just like me” vibe. she’ll ask inappropriate questions, i call them midnight questions. where you're in bed, falling asleep, and you get the urge to ask a wildly inappropriate question that you're going to get upset about the answer to it. i thought that was realistic as well. Rooney of course touches upon many socio-political topics, includes class differences between her characters. but at the end of the day, they care about each other and their personal lives. they love each other. i was surprised to read an argument/fight/psychotic breakdown scene. i loved the way it went down. i loved how alice responded to it. i love how felix comforted her. i love how eileen was upset about an argument, and yet somehow her and simon made up and confessed their feelings, like again, but for good this time. the last two chapters were blades to my heart but in a wholesome way. eileen and alice are two best friends who love and care about each other. I've said that before, but i want to drive the point home that they LOVE each other. I'm so tired of love being legitimate between couples, especially heterosexual couples. i remember listening to a Binchcity podcast episode, and they talked about the lesbian continuum. how many experiences between women will be on a “lesbian continuum” where you can have both platonic experiences and sexual and romantic experiences as well. it highlights aspects of friendships that are to be taken seriously, as seriously as aspects between heterosexual couples. at one point eileen was crying, right after her argument with alice, and she said “i wish she hadn't left me.” and she was crying, and simon was holding her, and that pain of a friendship, is just as real as breakup pain. of course. if anything, eileen felt more things than after her breakup with Aidan who she didn't really care about.
the last chapter, where eileen is happy with simon, and they cook supper and fall asleep watching netflix together, really made me emotional. i kept thinking how this chapter validates my relationship with shawn, because I'm reading about a person, albeit fictional, who is happy with her life and her relationship with the person she's loved for so long. it made me so happy to read that because i always thought falling asleep to netflix was kind of lame, like do something more interesting with your life you know. but i read that, and shawn and i will eat together, watch mario or youtube, and fall asleep together. and we’ll spoon and whisper to each other how much we love each other. and that is wholesome, and healthy, and it makes me stupidly happy. and reading this chapter, not only made me emotional, but it made me realize the incredible amount of love that shawn and i have for each other. reading about romance made me realize like yes i have so much romance in my life! for the past couple of weeks, if not for the past month entirely, i have been incredibly anxious and jealous in my relationship with shawn. and it makes me feel like shit, and it makes me cry and be insecure, and it makes me be distant from shawn! which doesn't help the relationship, of course not. and then, for eileen to say that she’s pregnant, when she didn't even know she wanted children or to be a mother or to be a married woman! made me emotional. because we think life is horrible and miserable and that we’re the worst people in the world. when in reality, life is not stagnant. of course not, but it feels like it is. life can be good. and you can be married, a mother, and happy. and who would've thought? a year can pass by and you'll be doing something you never even thought you would have done a year ago. and you're happy. but you cant believe it. and you think how can i be living in a house/buying a house? when a year ago i didn't even know that i wanted this. i loved the chapter, i love sally rooney even though she writes about parasocial relationships. this book made me appreciate my friendships, my annoying and insecure self, the self that has mental breakdowns and breaks shit and sobs uncontrollably needing to be held by their lover. it made me appreciate my living in the countryside. it made me appreciate my relationship with shawn. it made me appreciate literature. this book truly had me feeling like the type of situation where you're in the middle of a field in a summer dress, with earphones listening to Weyes Blood, turning in circles crying because you're so stupidly happy, and its raining. i know its dramatic. but honestly it feels so good to do that. i loved this book to no end. i loved it for itself, for the inspiration it gave me, and i loved it for what it taught me about myself and my life.

Book 136 of 2021. Next for #IndianBooksinAugust I snuck in a little romance. A little chick-lit if you will. A genre I read very, very rarely from. I think I sorta overdid/over read from this slice of the bookish pizza in the early 2000s. I read every Shopaholic, love at first sight, enemies to lovers romcom there was. And I loved it. A lot. Now I prefer consuming this genre through films. Give me a good romcom and I will happily watch it. Books not so much. This book was a fun and funny ride. The family black sheep- LJ, comes back home for her beloved Paati's (Grandma) funeral. And is forced to live with her large and slighlty dysfunctional family for 13 days. Cousins who she doesn't get along with anymore, a twin who's the good kid of the family, a sister-in-law who's a little too perfect and a Dad who doesn't even talk to her anymore. It's a lot. Add a hot family lawyer to the mix and 💥 boom you have a recipe for...family bonding and so much chemistry and love. An enjoyable read that I quite enjoyed. Good fun. Sometimes it's nice to step out and sample something different.
