Itineraries in Exploring Bryce Canyon National Parke by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: While taking in views looking to the southeast at the overlook at Yovimpa Point in Bryce Canyon National Park. My thinking in composing this image was to create a layered look with the nearby escarpment and eroded formations of hoodoos leading off to the southern Utah landscape covered with trees on the hillsides and plateaus. The next one is to take advantage of a color contrast between the earth tones and the greens and yellows of the trees. I angled my Nikon SLR camera slightly downward to create more of a sweeping view across this landscape. I felt that would add a little sense of grandeur to the terrain relief present as well as bringing the horizon higher into the image. It would also help to minimize the sun shining directly across the lens and creating lens flares as it was still low in the sky's that morning. I later worked with control points in DxO PhotoLab 5 and then made some adjustments to bring out the contrast, saturation and brightness I wanted for the final image.

OZARK HOWLER- ARKANSAS

The Ozarks are a range of low mountains found primarily in Northern Arkansas and southern Missouri with portions extending into Oklahoma and Kansas.   Their origins lie in the late Paleozoic when sand, silt, coral, and shells built up as layers of sludge on the bottom of a sea that covered  what would eventually become the American South. Over time these sediments hardened into rock- sand became sandstone, silt became slate, and the shells and coral became limestone- and the movement of tectonic plates pushed them upwards into a low dome-like plateau.  Over the next 485 million years rivers and rain gradually eroded the soft rocks into canyons, cliffs, and caves that have provided habitat for bears, bobcats, otters and other Southern wildlife along with more unusual creatures like blind cave fish, collared lizards and endangered grey bats. And perhaps a cryptid or two.

According to legend, the people of the Ozarks have been haunted for decades by the unearthly screams of a beast dubbed the Black Howler.  Those who have caught a glimpse of the monster describe it as a dark-furred cat nearly the size of a bear. Other reports claim it has glowing red eyes and demonic horns sprouting from its head.

Explanations for the beast range from a normal, though unknown, species of large cat to something more supernatural. A few people have even compared the beast to English and Welsh legends of black dogs, cŵn annwn, hellhounds, and other supernatural beasts that bring misfortune to those who see them.

More skeptical people have speculated that the Howler is simply a misidentified cougar. Though these big cats are believed to be extinct in this region, it’s possible that a small population has survived. Or perhaps a few lone individuals have wandered in from other areas. This theory is bolstered by photos from trail cams showing creatures that strongly resemble these animals, and by similar cases of “phantom big cats” occurring in areas of the US where they are not normally found.

Though some claim that legends of the Howler go back generations, cryptozoologist Loren Coleman has found that the first reports of the beast originated from posts on online forums in the late 1990s. His investigations indicate that the “folklore” about the beast was a deliberate hoax to mock the widespread reports of chupacabras and bigfoots that were becoming increasingly widespread at the time thanks to the advent of the internet. Hoax it may be, but the Howler has since become a popular piece of Ozark folklore and sightings are still regularly reported.

 The Howler is especially significant as one of the first urban legend monsters to be created online, laying the groundwork for later, more famous internet creatures like Slenderman, The Rake, Momo, and Trevor Henderson’s Siren Head.

- Mav got sent to the Mojave Desert 3 years pre-movie.

- The awkward energy around Sereshaw when they’re first introduced together is not my imagination.

In fact, he’d call himself a fan. It reminds him of the open road. Miles and miles of the same thing, seemingly going on forever. Fucking gorgeous. Fucking terrifying. If he was gonna end it all, he thinks flinging himself off the side of the cliff might be the way to go. He takes a few pictures and then wastes a couple attempts at getting a photo of himself before some elderly couple offers to take his picture. “You’ll look awfully handsome once this develops,” the woman says as she hands the camera back. “Thank you,” Dean says, blushing slightly. “Would you like me to take a picture of you two?” Dean asks, gesturing to the camera hanging from around her husband’s neck. “Please,” the man says, handing his camera over. Dean snaps a few pictures, including one of the couple kissing. It’s unbearably sweet and Dean’s suddenly hit with the overwhelming yearning to have someone to share this with. Sure, he enjoyed the three-and-a-half-hour solo drive and likes getting to play the music he wants and not having to compromise on road trip snacks. But he also thinks it might be nice to have his hand on someone’s thigh the whole drive, or someone to play the license plate game with, or someone to kiss in front of the Grand Canyon like the world carved out the space just for them. Dean stops in the gift shop and buys two postcards. One for Sam and one for Jimmy. He sits on the hood of Baby with a pen he found in the glove department and doodles in the corner of the card that he already designated as Sam’s. Sammy, Bet you’re jealous I’m hitting national parks without you. Don’t worry, I’m dragging your ass out here the second I can. I wouldn’t mind seeing this shit a second time around. Maybe next time you can force me to read a pamphlet or two. Study hard and stay off the drugs. Dean He switches over to Jimmy’s postcard. Jimmy, This old lady told me I was handsome and that I reminded her of her husband when they first got married. You think I could hit that? Oh my goodness you posted that little thing about Canyon the Cougar and my heart went !!!

I still have my own Canyon from when I was a child. I got her when she came out because I was a huge beenie baby kid. I know she's listed as a boy officially but she was always a lady to me.

She's 24 now and I still love her and keep her close.

I'm happy to see you still keep your own Canyon since your childhood! She is in deed friend shaped and seems like not only she is your friend but she is also a friend to your cat to!

*(I posted the thing about Canyon the Cougar due to the recent Gougar meme but it seems like this Beanie Baby is not the popular one because I tried tumblr search on it but barely find anything... Canyon is so underrated imo)
