Exercise: Exposing intersexism in yourself

Perisex (non-intersex) people please take time to work through this. I'd also appreciate if you reblogged, even if you don't have time to do the exercise.

When you think of an 'intersex body', what comes to mind?

-Do you think of a stereotypical "hermaphrodite"? (Ex. a penis + vagina, a penis + pair of breasts, a very feminine person with a beard)

Do you, or have you ever, used one of the following arguments;

-Intersex people are living proof that trans people exist/that gender/sex is not binary

-Intersex existing disproves everything TERFs/transphobes believe in

-Cis kids with hormone issues are allowed to take HRT or participate in sports, which is hypocritical against trans people

-Nobody is forcing kids into sex reassignment surgery or hormones, that isn't a thing that happens

-Any kind of argument which uses intersex people as a statistic, whether that is framing intersex people existing as either "common" or "rare"

Do you, or have you ever, said any of the following statements;

-Technically I'm biologically intersex now because I took HRT/had surgery, which makes me biologically nonbinary aka intersex

-I tell people that I am intersex/have a hormone condition to avoid discrimination

-I wish I was born as/could become intersex, it would help my dysphoria a lot

-Intersex people are so lucky because they're already biologically nonbinary, they don't even need to transition

-This animal was born with a mix of sex characteristics/without a sex/developed characteristics of the opposite sex over time, which means they're nonbinary/trans

When it comes to sex, do you;

-Believe that sex is binary

-Believe that all intersex people are infertile

-Believe that all intersex people produce both sperm and egg

-Fantasize about intersex bodies, or consume or create porn that displays either intersex bodies or exaggerated stereotypes of hermaphroditic bodies

-Ask invasive questions about what genitals or reproductive organs an intersex person has

-Treat AFAB/AMAB the same as "[non-medically-transitioned] perisex female/perisex male", such as saying "AFAB anatomy" when you really mean vulva, vagina, uterus, ovaries, breasts, and so on

-Believe that HRT/surgery makes you intersex

-Believe that intersex only covers certain types of variation in sex and not others (Ex. Counting ovotestes, CAIS, and CAH as intersex but not counting PCOS or Klinefelter's)

When it comes to creating (artwork, writing, videos, etc), do you;

-Wish to include an intersex character, but do little or no research on how to write/draw them

-Fail to consider how your work will affect real-life intersex people consuming your work

-Ask random intersex people to help you create an intersex character

-Wish to include an intersex character because you personally think intersex people are interesting, or because you are seeking to include as many marginalized identities as you can

-Create intersex characters because you personally find them sexy

-Refer to characters as "hermaphrodites"

-If you create pride artwork or sell pride artwork, if you include a large variety of other LGBT+ identities but do not include intersex, why is this?

When it comes to advocacy work, do you;

-Fail to bring up intersex issues in conversations which should directly involve them, such as the Kansas bathroom bill

-Attempt to push intersex people out of queer spaces by saying that they are not queer

-Fail to recognize or acknowledge how many anti-queer and anti-trans arguments are inherently also anti-intersex arguments

-Say that intersex people are just "collateral damage" or "just caught in the crossfire/targeted by mistake" when it comes to discussing discrimination

-Never think to bring intersex flags or pins or similar to pride even as an ally, contributing to pride being vastly void of intersex pride

-Never attempt to organize protests specifically for intersex rights, or never bring intersex issues up in LGBTQIA+ support groups or resource centers or online

-Never educate others on intersex issues or lift up intersex voices

-Believe that intersex people have more rights than other marginalized groups, or that they are not discriminated against for being intersex

-Believe that all intersex people who are discriminated against are only discriminated against because people believe that they are transgender

Now, not all of these will point towards you being intersexist; however, if you find yourself hitting several points listed here, you do likely have some internalized biases and intersexism to unpack.

Welcome! This blog is created as a convenient little place to fill up with worldbuilding and pretty much anything I happen to make about FNAF:SB AU about the two little helpers inside the the second-hand laptop you had to purchase on a short notice. The laptop happened to be set up with a fresh install of a rather... unique operating system named CaelOS. Feel free to ask either me or the assistants about it, I’ll do my best to respond.

CaelOS [CAH-el-os] - a lightweight, abandonware operating system, created with the purpose of teaching children how to use a computer with internet connection effectively and responsibly. For that purpose, it incorporates use of a specially created dual module virtual assistant, to both educate, and cultivate healthier habits in both online presence, and real life presence. [...]

[...] Sun, dubbed “Daycare” within the system, is the virtual assistant module that is designed to provide any help a child needs to learn basic computer operation, and accompany them to provide a sense of companionship during any activities. It is notable for displaying a bubbly, energetic personality. [...]

[...] Moon, dubbed “Nightguard” in the system, fitting the celestial theme of the OS, is the module that doubles as security and antivirus. Its purpose is to safeguard the user from any malicious software, and the system itself from accidental or malicious user actions. As opposed to Sun, it displays a rather quiet personality, and may be prone to snarky remarks and mild annoyance outbursts, which was very heavily criticized by the few who were able to use the OS before the servers shut down. [...]

[...] The OS is considered complete abandonware due to the servers hosting the disk images being shut down shortly after its failure due to privacy concerns, parental complaints, and general criticism of not being all that different from its counterparts aside from the built in assistant. While praised for being cleverly programmed, it didn’t prove to be enough to gather the revenue for continued development. [...] It is unknown how many users have CaelOS as their primary system. [...]

Obey Me! Game Night!

Hey guys, so this isn't my usual character analysis/headcanon post, but I wanted to announce something I've been working on that I think y'all will be interested in!

Now introducing:

That's right; I created a custom Cards Against Humanity deck for us Obey Me fans!

Best part is, this deck is completely standalone, with a controlled ratio of OM-themed cards to default CAH cards. This deck consists of both 250+ custom OM cards, and default cards from official decks hand-picked to match the vibe. This way, you get a healthy mix of OM and non-OM cards, without a full base deck completely drowning out the expansion nor irrelevant cards that aren't compatible with OM's themes.

The deck is available on ManyDecks, a deck-building site for the Cards Against Humanity online alternative MassiveDecks.

So to be very clear: you do not believe that trans people are who they say they are, but rather, you believe in social constructs of gender as being rigid definitions? As in, a woman is simply someone who doesn't have visible hormonal imbalances and looks feminine to you? Gender as a gut instinct? Explain whether or not you are a trans ally and give real explanations.

So, I can tell this isn’t being asked in good faith, but that’s okay! I’m going to answer in good faith anyway, since you haven’t been vulgar and I hope this may be useful to you.

So, to start with, I don’t care how people present themselves. In fact, in my ideal world (a long, long, way off) people would be free to:

Dress however they like

Date/have sex with whomever they like (assuming consent by all parties of course)

Have whatever job they want (assuming they are or will be qualified for it)

Play with whatever toys they like

Be friends with whomever they like

Call themselves whatever name they like

And other similar things

I’d say that indicates I don’t support “rigid definitions” of gender, and I certainly don’t support the idea that female individuals should conform to the current social role(s) prescribed to women or that male individuals should conform to the current social role(s) prescribed to men. In fact, I am strongly against the social construct of gender. I don’t want biological sex to have any say at all in everyone’s day to day life.

That being said, I also recognize that biological sex does exist and (in humans) cannot be changed (for some excellent reading about this see: this open letter about “whether biological sex is real”, and just to anticipate some common arguments: “inter sexism” is not as common as red hair, and sex is not a spectrum (as written by an individual with CAH, I also suggest this deconstruction of postmodernism as postmodernism underpins the theory leading to the “sex as a spectrum” conclusion).

I also know that there are very real, very impactful differences between the sexes in today's world (for sources on this please see anything in my male violence tag as a starting point) that justify the existence of sex separated bathrooms/shelters/etc.

Now, is it possible that some day men and women will be socialized they same way from birth, that crime rates between the sexes will equalize? Sure! Maybe! At that point in time, the only difference left between the sexes will be medical. But right now, these are facts of life that you can’t wish away.

To address the rest of your question explicitly, no a woman is not “simply someone who doesn't have visible hormonal imbalances and looks feminine to [me]”. Many women have hormonal imbalances and they are still women; many others present themselves in a traditionally masculine way and they are still women. A woman is simply “an adult female human”, where “adult” means fully grown, human means “a member of the primate genus Homo”, and female means “of or denoting the sex that produces ova or bears young”. (And to against anticipate a common response, please note the use of the word “of” in the preceding definition, the use here means “derived or coming from” indicating that the individual in question need not actually produce ova or have children, simply that they are of the sex capable of doing so.)

I don’t really know what you mean by “gender as a gut instinct”. I can say that gender is a social construct (created by humans without existing independently in nature) that prescribes certain behaviors based on an individuals biological sex. Gender is often used interchangeably with “gender roles” when using the above definition. Gender may also be used interchangeably with “sex”, generally to avoid association with “sexual activity”. I use the first definition of gender, and consider it to be inherently oppressive to women.

Finally, I support trans people to the extent described above (in reference to self-expression). I also support a variety of social reforms concerning housing, health care access, economic equality, and others that would positively benefit everyone including trans individuals. Importantly, I support evidence based interventions for individuals with dysphoria (many of the current interventions are not evidence based), please see the society for evidence based gender medicine for an excellent resource concerning scientific literature review concerning trans health care.

It’s up to you to decide if that make me a “trans ally” or not. I think it does, and I encourage you to evaluate which parts of this you disagree with and why. How different are our ideal worlds? Why do you find it easier to reject biological realities than challenge long-held social realities?

y/n's walking in front of me, she smells of alcohol and light coffee beans, i can hear "jongho" packing up his stuff and "wooyoung" thanking him for coming. by the way that y/n looked at me, my condition must appear disheveled.

y/n turns around and grabs my hand, i try and focus on her heartbeat, it's slightly quicker than usual.

"are you nervous master?" i ask, watching her expression morph into something surprised.

"nervous? no i'm confused and worried, san. you ran off and came back with your clothes tattered and i just noticed a scratch on your arm! san when we get home, you have to tell me what happened."

she's holding both of my hands earnestly, her voice laced with concern, her eyes are looking at mine, she looks.. so beautiful.

san waited for you to settle down and well as to finish sewing his clothes back together. it was a nice shirt and some old jeans you had laying around that he was wearing, and being the cheapskate you were, you were determined to fix it. as the needle went through the fabric, san thought it was time to explain everything to you.

"i saw my brother, master," san spoke, "he was trying to get me to return to "our master" as he put it."

"your brother? you have one? i didn't know robots could have family," you commented, still focused on repairing his clothing, "so he attacked you?"

"he was trying to weaken me enough so he could drag me back up there," san explained, "during that fight, his hand collided with mine, and i had a surge of memories come back."

"want to tell me about it?"

"i was created in the year 2118, on october 24th. my creator was a woman, though i blank on her name, and she also created my brother then. his name was..

kang yeosang."

san's led briefly turned yellow, which you learned represented distress or a conflict in his system.

"she created us in a dark basement, and tried to hide the world from us, she would use us for some.. unsavory purposes. mainly manual labor, and at night when she was done for the day, me and yeosang would be shoved into a dark closet. unlike yeosang, i was gifted more freedom. i would be the one who would go outside to buy groceries and was the one introduced to various media. yeosang was the one she experimented on, every week she'd try a new program or change his appearance at whim, i could barely recognize him when i saw him. she changed him, and gave him a new program made to combat mine."

san rambled for a long time, telling you of the memories he had with yeosang. he and yeosang sounded like they had truly bonded at some point in time, but san couldn't remember as to why he woke up in the slums that night.

"what about CYBERLYFE? did your creator work there?"

"yes, she was one of the lead engineers, but me and yeosang were her most advanced creations, she kept calling us her precious little things. compared to the other androids, we were more human, both physically and mentally, according to her."

"what was she like?"

"... i guess you could call her "crazy", she was weirdly obsessed with appearances and strength, hence her constant experimenting on yeosang."

a pit in your stomach made you want to ask: "do you want to go back to her?", but you stopped yourself. his expression when remembering yeosang was not pleasant.

"that's enough san, thank you for telling me. come on, let's go to sleep, i'm tired," you said, watching as his led turned back to blue.

you grabbed his hand, his being a lot softer than your rough ones, him following you diligently. as you walked into your room, san's arms suddenly wrapped around your waist.

"don't send me away, please master. i'll be good for you," san whispered, his body pressed against your back.

"you're already perfect san, don't worry. let's go to bed."

you walked towards your bed, hopping in, and noticed that san wasn't leaving the room. usually he would close the door behind him and begin tidying up whatever he could, but he seemed extra hesitant on leaving.

"san? what's wrong?" you asked, sitting up on your bed.

san's led ring turned yellow, looking caught off guard.

"yeosang knows about you. he told me he would never hurt you, but he attacked me, and we're brothers.. i.. i don't want you out of my sight. it is my duty to protect you," san said, sternly.

"i see. that's ... understandable. here, you can come and lay in my bed with me," you offered, watching as san hesitated for a split second before walking calmly towards your bed.

despite the bed being a bit small, you scoot over and make enough room for the two of you. san tucked himself under the covers, first laying on his back, before turning towards you.

"..i can't sleep without holding something, which was usually yeosang, i was too embarrassed to tell you, and so i haven't bothered sleeping ever since i met you. sleeping recharges my vitals, but i can last a while without it. s-so what i'm saying is, can i h-hold you? master?" san rambled, not meeting your eyes.

"sure."

you found yourself replying without any real hesitation, you were too tired to really care, but you couldn't ignore the voice in the back of your head as san cradled your body in his arms.

doesn't he seem too human?

you and san walk towards the restaurant, he seemed weirdly excited to begin working. san still did not tell you how the encounter ended, but given that he was fully functional when he returned, you're guessing he either won or it was a draw.

"today is the day when kara comes to eat lunch with alice, i'm glad you get to meet them san!" you said, trying to ignore it and move on.

you still needed to make ends meet, but now you had to account for san's wellbeing as well. you couldn't stop working just because you have a target on your back, if you died, at least you wouldn't have to work anymore.

you made it to seventh heaven, seeing wooyoung just about finishing up opening.

"y/n! oh thank goodness, you're safe!" he yelled, running towards you and hugging you.

san watches with careful eyes as wooyoung cradles you in his arms, an uneasy feeling settled into san's stomach. as wooyoung released you, san swooped right back to your side.

"thank you for protecting y/n, wooyoung, i appreciate it. really."

wooyoung smiled as san bowed to him, you watched the scene and you were glad wooyoung was comfortable around san, knowing how jealous he got when you made new friends. he would never tell you, but wooyoung would feel lonely whenever you would go and play with anyone else.

"i would protect y/n with my life, we made that promise a long time ago."

san's eyes narrowed, smiling softly.

"i'm so glad," he replied.

you two waved goodbye to wooyoung, promising to come back for a drink that night. san looked as though a weight had been lifted off his shoulders.

"i like wooyoung," san said, "he cares for you."

"me too san, me and wooyoung have been by each other's side for a long time. we did a blood oath years ago, with one of wooyoung's old friends, but i can't remember his name. it was so long ago and that friend soon moved away. in the slums, you live life like it's your last everyday. have you ever heard of carpe diem?"

"yes, i'm guessing that you follow that ideal?"

"precisely, i want to live life passionately until my body stops working, when i can work, i'm as good as dead."

when the two of you made it to the restaurant, you and him walked in to see yunho and seonghwa yelling at each other in a furious manner.

"how could you let that happen?!" yunho yelled, a wave of anger you had never seen before.

"it's not my job to babysit that fucker, he's your best friend isn't he?! how was i supposed to know he'd get lost?! not to mention, hongjoong's also been missing, he's MY best friend, i don't have the capacity to worry about yours!" seonghwa yelled right back, neither showcasing any desire to back down.

"what's going on here?! customers are going to trickle in at any moment, you two better kill this right now or else i'm kicking you out," you spoke up, san close behind.

yunho and seonghwa looked at you in surprise.

"we can talk about this after work, but not when you're on the clock. come on now."

seonghwa and yunho let out short breaths, both tired from the constant shouting. they looked at each other, a silent truce agreed upon before yunho went into the kitchen area to gain some space.

you and san finished getting ready, you told san to go out front and have seonghwa help him, as you went to go ask yunho what happened.

"yunho, what happened? you're crying," you asked, watching as he let his salty tears fall onto the cutting board; forgotten lemons to the side.

"y-you remember mingi? he and i have been friends as long as you and wooyoung have, w-well he went missing last night when me and seonghwa were out drinking with him. he gets lost easily and i was in the bathroom, i told hwa to watch him and before i knew it; he was gone," yunho bit back a wave of tears, "i don't want to blame seonghwa, because he was as drunk as me, but then i saw him this morning and i got angry."

"once you two go on your lunch break, you two will talk it out. okay? i'll see if me and san can help," you said, watching as yunho's eyes ran over your face to see if you were lying.

when he decided you weren't, he embraced you tightly, soft sobs coming from the usually happy man.

"thank you, i just.. i just want him back," yunho said, you gave him a soft acknowledgment in the form of a back pat.

seonghwa is furiously scrubbing down the counters, there's approximately fifteen minutes and thirty-four seconds until opening. he turns around and sees me standing there, he sighs and bites back a smile as he asks me what i need.

seonghwa starts to softly tear up and i find myself hugging the older man, his equally tall body curls into mine, and i'm reminded of yeosang.

y/n exits the kitchen and smiles at the scene she sees, i find myself wanting to "blush" as she walks over, a fondness in her smile.

Hey! I’m a woman (?) with PCOS, and I saw your post. I’ve seen a few TikTok’s with similar takes, but google is giving me virtually nothing. While I was already more feminine presenting and the feminizing medications have been helpful for acne and mood, I also don’t know how and where that intersects with my gender.

Guess my question is, do you have more info on PCOS being an intersex disorder? Or is that more of a community thing coming from those with PCOS who also don’t align with their AGAB or sex organs? (Which if that’s all it is right now, that’s ok and that’s their experience and I know the medical community is slow af when it comes to “women’s” diseases)

A couple things first:

Being intersex isn't any indicator of gender if you don't want it to be. Women are women. Whether they are intersex, transgender, cisgender... a woman is a woman.

PCOS is not automatically intersex. The hyperandronized form of PCOS- which can create a body much like a trans man's- can be considered intersex if those affected desire the use of that particular label. Some people with PCOS look fairly similar to cis men, I used to live with one that pre-T looked and sounded like a cisgender man. That's not so different for why CAH and NCAH are considered intersex conditions, so if one is intersex, it means the other technically counts as intersex as well.

That's also why so many TERFs are so desperate to not have hormonal differences count as intersex. If hormonal differences count, then certain causes of PCOS technically could be labeled intersex, because some people with PCOS have an abundance of testosterone their body naturally produces, just like someone with CAH or NCAH, and that creates ambiguous genitalia, facial and body hair, changes to bone structure and fat distribution, changes to internal sexual organs and their processes, and more.

Do you have tips on how to find an endocrinologist who's knowledgeable about CAH?

It is honestly such a need to develop a database of intersex affirming professionals (if you're in Canada, I just met someone who will have one created soon! I'll update when she posts it publically,) and until we have that I think it can be super challenging to be able to find knowledgeable providers. I wish I could give you more specific info, but I'll share some tips that have worked for me.

Asking other intersex people about doctors in your area. In America, Interconnect, Club intersex, Houston Intersex Society, and iSpace are all peer support spaces where you could reach out online and ask members in your area if they have doctors to recommend

Seeing if the doctor has CAH listed on their website as a condition they treat

Searching the doctor's name in academic journal websites to see if they have published anything about CAH or other intersex variations.

In the first appointment with the doctor, asking them how many patients they've treated with CAH, what continuing education they do on CAH, how they make sure they're aware of new research

You can share this intersex affirming primary care guide, and intersex affirming hospital polices with your doctor to help them realize the best practices for respectful care

this is a question to the team themselves. how did you come up with gustatl's typing quirk?

Well, I have to go on a bit of a tangent to answer that. Gustatl's name comes from 2 things. Gust, as in a gust of wind, and Ehecatl, (E-heh-cah-tuhl) also known as Quetzalcoatl. (Kets-all-coh-tuhl) Quetzalcoatl is the most important god in Aztec mythology, and along with many other things, created the wind. He appears in the form of Ehecatl, a bipedal feathered-serpent that looks somewhat like a human in stature. Since Ehecatl is a serpent, we figured that a neat quirk would be that Gustatl slurred his "s" sounds, which include s's, c's, and sometimes x's, (like in the word next) which is a trait mostly given to snake or snake-like characters in media. This also references a sort of spoiler-y detail about Gustatl, being that he pulls from another Aztec mythological entity, the Ouroborus, which, in Aztec mythos, is depicted as a serpent eating it's own tail. It represents both the beginning and the end, and is a metaphor to Gustatl's never-ending lust for power, which ended up "consuming" most of his humanity. Not that he's a human, you get what I mean.

Sorry about the long-winded answer! I could write for hours about all the thought that went into Gustatl's design, personality, origins, and backstory. He's by far my favorite creation, even if I only created certain parts of him. @snakeoilsalemsan originally thought of his concept, after all.
