i think the reds and blues that were with the federal army should’ve also had lieutenants so. i made lieutenants for sarge.

their names are luka and flannery. luka’s a yellowish orange and flannery is in between red and maroon… if i had to map then onto halo 4 colors i’d say peach or tan and rust respectively.

their characterizations are. flannery is parallel of sarge and simmons. very gung ho about war and violence and also kind of a suck up but mostly bc she agrees with everything sarge says. she also fucking sucks so bad at combat though

luka is parallel to grif and donut (though donut parallel is. honestly pretty weak. he’s just gay and kinda gnc). less lazy and more pacifistic though. really does not want to be fighting and doesn’t believe in the cause for the war at all but recognizes that he doesn’t really have a choice here. especially bc flannery is his best friend and though she’s sucks at combat he’s really good. incredibly skilled marksman, proficient in hand to hand, capable of impressive acrobatics. he only ever breaks any of this out though to protect his bff and make her think that she’s super talented in combat. MAJOR enabler.

i think maybe there would be some implication that luka has had a kinda fucked up past and that’s why he’s so skilled but he insists he just learned everything to protect flannery. i don’t think it matters too much, i like that most of the rvb characters just have these kind of vague backstories

sarge has to grapple with his glorification of war while also recognizing the way that war has fucked these kids up and like… this girl being a reflection of him and reminiscent of someone he cares about whether he’d admit it or not so willing to fight and die for a cause that not only does she not believe in, she doesn’t even know WHY they’re fighting in the first place. and forget season 11’s “sarge hates the blues again for no reason�� it’s sarge understanding what it was like to be put into a war he had no stakes in and told to hate someone with no explanation and how willingly he bought into it and struggling with deciding if he should encourage this life for her or really truly admit that every thing he’s done, even his helljumper days, has been for the militaristic lie and that he doesn’t want to watch this young woman die for something so meaningless

luka is similar but the opposite for sarge, with sarge recognizing his incredible talent but complete lack of motivation mirroring grif’s and struggling to know if he should push this young man into a life of war and violence like he had or if he should let him try to get out of it like he so desperately wants to.

i recognize this plot is probably too heavy for the way they write sarge but these are MY ocs and i get to write about sarge unlearning propaganda if i want to

2. james has tried for years to explain technology to jessie, and he's exceptionally patient & kind while he teaches her, but she's much too proud to admit when she doesn't understand and won't ever let him finish an explanation so she never learns anything.

3. james gives fantastic hugs and is very affectionate, but jessie is initially much too guarded to comfortably engage in physical affection. it took a while, but she eventually became more open to hugs as the trio found themselves in frequent frightening situations and james & meowth had enough opportunities to prove to her that they aren't going to abandon her. after enough time as a team, she lets her walls down and hugs them back. james & meowth finally learn that jessie gives truly wonderful hugs when her heart's in it. nobody else gets to know this though, and jessie never once verbally admits to being a hugger. james & meowth respect her need to put up a front and never tell her how amazing her hugs are because they know she'd just get embarrassed, but it's a mutual understanding among the trio.

4. once, meowth dared to ask his teammates why james always drives when they have a car/van even though he doesn't have a license. james made a joke about how letting jessie drive should be a much more serious crime than driving without a license, and an insulted jessie yanked the car keys right out of his pocket and forced her teammates into a car. she hopped in the front seat despite james's frantic protests and barreled down the road doing no less than 90mph at all times, swerving like a maniac, ignoring every traffic law & common courtesy, driving as poorly as she possibly could until the boys finally convinced her to stop, terrified for their lives. james promised never to make fun of her driving again and meowth vowed to himself that he'd just keep his big mouth shut next time he had a question.

5. [minor cw for body image]

jessie & james both have days where they struggle with body image (they make a lot of references — especially in early seasons — to dieting & body size, plus they rarely have easy access to food, which i imagine complicates their relationships with it). when one of them is having a bad day, the other knows exactly how they're feeling and how to help them through it. it's not uncommon for one of them to cook/buy/steal food for the other because they know it's hard to do that for yourself when you're feeling low, and they frequently have to remind each other that even on bad days you need to take care of yourself.

6. jessie wishes that meowth would ride on her shoulder more often as he usually favors james, but she doesn't want to say anything because she refuses to come off as needy or sentimental. james has an excellent ability to tune into jessie's feelings by now though and one day discreetly tells meowth that jessie would love it if the scratch cat got on her shoulder. the next day while they're traipsing around following the twerps, meowth hops up on her shoulder, complaining about the long walk. jessie roasts him for being lazy, but james & meowth notice her softly smiling for the rest of the afternoon. now he does it more often !!

7. james wasn't quite 18 yet when he tried to join team rocket, so he lied about his birthday so he'd still be allowed in. when he met jessie, who was a little over a year older than him, he quickly learned how insecure she is about aging, so when she eventually asked his birthday, he thought it would be better to tell her his fake one so she wouldn't know that he's actually younger than her. he kept up the lie for years, pretending to be the oldest of the trio and letting jessie & meowth celebrate his birthday in the totally wrong season, until finally he accidentally lets slip his real zodiac sign in a conversation. jessie immediately calls him on it, as the birthday he's told her is months off from the zodiac sign he claims. he's forced to admit that he lied to his teammates about his birthday. jessie flies into a rage, meowth fury swipes him across the face, and james apologizes profusely until everyone drops it. later that night, jessie turns to him and says, "i don't even care that you're younger than me. i care that i've never been able to tell you 'happy birthday' when it actually mattered." james thinks his heart might just explode.

Many, many years ago, when Geocities pages were very much still a thing, a young me online stumbled across a parody work continuation of Malory Towers following Darrell, Sally, Alicia and Betty to St Andrews.

The problem my younger self faced was it was written in Dutch. As far as I know, no translations exist, even to this day.

But, I was curious (and autism probably played a role in hindsight), and a little barrier like it being written in a language I didn't know wasn't going to stop me. (cont. after cut)

So, I borrowed a Dutch dictionary and a Dutch grammar book from the library and unravelled what the landing page of the website and the summary said. (In hindsight, I do wonder what my parents thought I was learning Dutch for... Maybe they were used to my oddities)

Through my arduous translation efforts, I was able to learn that it seemed to involve the four going off to St Andrews where Darrell fell for and got involved with an older female student called Artemis. This caused problems with Sally, who was in love with Darrell, and nearly ruins all Darrell's other existing relationships, too. Then, Darrell gets her heart broken by Artemis and has to try and make things right with Sally and everyone else.

Of course, after seeing that, I went on to slowly translate my way through the entire book, which was available online, over the course of about a year. It was a painful process. Even the discovery of and using Google Translate (which was very much in its infancy) did not help substantially. There were sections that only just made sense and there was certainly a lot I missed details of.

But I got the gist of it. It was as delightfully ridiculous as anticipated. Gwen was a librarian?! Miss Peters was...just at St Andrews for some reason. Darrell is engaged at the start of the book to some dude, but then he came out as gay, too, so there was wlw mlm solidarity. Chaotic parody made all the more chaotic by being via terrible translation.

Then, Geocities websites started to go down and, for all I knew, the site was lost. I did not know about the Wayback Machine until a number of years later, when I used it to try to find an archived version of Kanna-Ophelia's 'Rumour Chain' which fanfiction.net had the audacity to delete (Still annoyed to this day. I only ever found chapters 1-3, and chapters 4 and 5 were where the glorious angst really ramped up 😭). Anyway... I digress.

So, what prompted this thought today?

Well, while checking old discs in storage, I found my truly terrible translation from when I had to back up the dying family computer years ago. And, today, a few things are true:

1. My language reading skills are Much better these days thanks to self-teaching and necessity for work.

2. DeepL and other translator are so much better at filling in the gaps.

3. I had all the original text in Dutch saved on those discs, not just the terrible translations and the original website is also backed up on the Wayback Machine.

So, I am going to newly translate this chaotic parody that is 'Pitty naar college'. I've been meaning to continue translating the German continuations (which I've been advised are very het, the disappointment...) anyway, so what's another book to add to the translation pile 😁

I don't usually think of actors playing different characters as being the same character in different universes, but it amuses me to think of LOA as an alternate universe to NLMG. Nueng and Palm have already travelled in time in OS2, imagine them travelling to the LOA universe and Nueng being all, "Mom!?" and Rose, "Huh. I've never had a kid. Curious."

(Yes, I'm aware that LOA as a prequel to NLMG is another option, but that would make either Rose quite a bit younger, or Thanya quite a bit older, than I think they are.)

Thee continues to pine in the most beautiful way possible. And this actor is mostly known for playing tennis? What a waste. Nobody cares if you pine at a tennis ball.

I was at a thrift shop the other day and heard someone in the toy section say túktā, which made me all, oh! I know that word!

The plot stuff is... mostly expected at this point? Which isn't necessarily a negative. I think the chips are falling in a very natural way, it feels like things happen because they would happen and not just because the plot demands it, but yeah, there weren't really any surprises. Still can hardly wait for the next ep!

So the positive attention I've gotten for my TBHK fic idea of an exorcist!Aoi has kept it in my head and although I'm not going to write the full thing until the manga is over (I've already changed so much from the first fic I posted on AO3 almost two years ago because of stuff revealed in the manga) but I'm sort of obsessed with my character dynamics I've created for Aoi, Akane, and Teru so I'm going to discuss them here using those fun ship dynamic pictures. I will also probably post more fics focusing on their relationships with each other as well as other characters because character writing is one of my favorite things which is why my NaNoWriMo project is focusing on worldbuilding.

Have fun with this!

Some backstory: Aoi and Teru have known each other since they were really little and are WlW MlM solidarity and hostility at the same time.

When Akane comes into the mix when he becomes part supernatural, things differ significantly from manga canon because Aoi isn't going to let Akane flounder in this new world and so comes clean about everything, leading to a dynamic that is healthier because they are honest to each other now and Akane isn't continually confessing to Aoi because he realizes that she isn't going to love him back the way he loves her and his feelings for her slowly fade. It is also unhealthy in a different way because now they are codependent and possessive of each other. It's fun. Teru thinks it's fun, anyway, and pokes at it constantly.

Anyway, because Akane now knows that Aoi is an exorcist, he insists on helping her with exorcisms and refuses the glasses Teru offers him. The three of them begin to regularly work together and it brings them closer with each other.

It's very awkward having a British student in my class who is unapologetically pro-monarch. When asked by my chorale teacher what exactly the Queen symbolized, she said that she united everyone in the UK, no matter their political beliefs.

As she's a tiny freshman on a completely different continent, I was nice enough not to point her to tumblr to show her all the people in the UK who are celebrating her death.

So... Latest JSHK chapter...

Obviously we're all very upset about Teru. He cares so much for his brother and they're both so traumatized and, regardless of how he treats supernaturals, he did just push his brother out of danger and Did Not Deserve That.

But, also, why does Number Six suddenly have an accent?

Did he have an accent in earlier chapters? Is this just a weird thing in the translation I'm reading?

Also, sad that Aoi had no lines in this chapter. Let her speak, Aodairo!!!

I'm honestly shocked how many people don't realize that Helio and Medea kissing isn't an endorsement of their relationship. It's very clear that their relationship isn't healthy and that Medea doesn't care for Helio the same way he cares for her. I mean, when he asks "to console her", she doesn't give an enthusiastic "yes" or even a tepid "sure". She pauses and then says, "If you'd like." She doesn't ask for it.

To be clear, I'm not saying that Helio is taking advantage of Medea like some other people are saying. I think it's honestly the other way around. Medea knows he loves/worships her and indulges his eccentricities, even if it sort of annoys her (like when she repeated called him clingy), because it allows her to keep him under her thumb.

The major difference between Medea and Eros is that she feels guilty about using Helio like this, unlike how Eros feels about using Psyche (or literally anyone else because he's insane).

Medea legitimately cares for Helio. Just not as much as he cares for her.
