Easiest low energy/depression meal I know how to make
Required ingredients
Rice - you can use proper rice but microwavable rice is fine too
Refried beans - at my local Tesco you can get refried beans in microwavable bags but a tin works too
Optional ingredients
Grated cheese - pre grated is fine. You can find pre grated lactose free cheese at Tesco if you are in the UK
Salsa
Sour cream: can replace with non flavoured greek yogurt which you can also get lacto free versions of at Tesco
Anything else you want
Method:
Cook the rice either in the rice cooker, on the stove, or in the microwave depending on what rice you're using. If you're using the microwave rice you might want to do step 2 first and then cook the rice
Cook the refried beans. Do it in the microwave if you can
Mix rice and beans together in a big bowl or pasta plate
Optional: add any optional ingredients now
Eat
It's filling. It's fast. And if you used the microwaveable pouches it's also very little clean up

Depression Meal:
Take 1-2 russet potatoes, rinse them, and cut them into small pieces. Don't worry about peeling, the skin is good for you. Put the pieces into a saucepan and fill with water. Add salt and pepper. Boil on the stove for 20 minutes.
Optionally: If you have frozen vegetables, add them in to boil as well for added nutrition.
Low energy, low effort, filling and relatively tasty with only a pan to clean that can be done quickly.

if you're able to invest, a rice cooker is kind of a huge depression meal upgrade.
Like there are ways to optimize your rice cooker recipes by washing your rice, adding meats that you marinate, etc. etc. But you can take it all the way down to low effort and still have a nice meal.
For example:
Buy pre-washed rice so you don't have to wash your rice - not possible for everyone, but in the US, a lot of rice you buy is pre-washed, and it will say so on the bag, hence that stereotype about white people not washing their rice - it does tend to have a nice texture and maybe even taste when washed (less starch floating around in the water) , but it'll be just fine unwashed as long as it is pre-washed. PLUS, often that prewashed rice has been fortified with vitamins, so skipping the wash may be better for you if you're low on other nutrition rich foods anyway. (and that's why a lot of pre-washed rice basically begs you to not wash it on the bag haha)
If you can, buy some bouillon, either in dry form or wet form, and you can just add a dollop or a cube in there, and it'll make your rice so yummy so easily.
You can stop there and have some nice flavored rice done between 40 minute to an hour based on the setting you use on your rice cooker. I recommend not using the quick setting because the texture of the rice is nicer and either way all you are doing is sitting around and waiting for it to be done, so may as well wait a little longer for nicer rice.
If you buy some meat chunks or chicken wings or frozen veggies, you can just pour those in there too! and that will elevate it a lot even with little or no seasoning. idk if this helps. maybe this is still too much for a depression meal but i feel like my rice cooker has made life a lot easier in terms of yummy meals when i'm not feeling doing anything The toughest part is washing the rice cooker bowl and that's technically easy, but sometimes the spoons just aren't there so i get that.
You could even boil potatoes in a rice cooker! mine has a steamer i can insert into it and i like to cut my potatoes in half and steam them! I haven't tried a whole potato yet... so idk if it'll work, but tbh you can just stick a whole potato in the oven on 400 degrees for one hour and you'll have a reasonable enough basked potato so you can do that too if you want. maybe get some shredded cheese on that bad boy....
okay im rambling lol

I cannot overstate the importance of keeping a bag of hard-boiled eggs in the fridge.
The number of times I've been saved from starvation on a negative-spoons depression day by thinking "but the eggs are already cooked, and the salt shaker is already on the counter" is beyond counting.

As much as I understand why it needs to stop (people aren't smart), I really liked the 'girl dinner' trend. Sometimes the only thing I can really manage to make myself is some shit like Kraft Dinner in a cup, and it made me feel a lot less like a failure to frame it as a 'girl dinner'. It was such a blessing to have that trend go around, though the Yin to that Yang was yet another wave of misogyny being spread as a joke. For the love of god can we not have one thing girl-related that isn't warped into something for Joe Rogan to talk about?

Today's relatively low effort meal as my pain is about a 7.5-8 today and my mental health is not the best and I wanted something that didn't require a lot of prep and I could cook from my kitchen stool
Ingredients:
pasta of your choice. How much pasta? That's between you and god
A quarter jar of left over red pasta sauce (or just any amount red pasta sauce you got. I don't care I'm not your mom)
Pepperoni - however much you desire
Method:
Make a little tower of however much pepperoni that you want. Measure with your heart
Cut the pepperoni tower into eight little triangles so now you have 8 triangle shaped towers
Bring a saucepan of water to a boil
Add pasta of your choice and cook for the appropriate amount of time
As the pasta cooks if you're using pasta sauce that needs heating start heating that in a separate saucepan and add the pepperoni. It will start off in big chunks but if you stab the chunks with a wooden spoon enough they'll come apart. Heat on low as the pasta cooks
Drain the pasta and turn off the heat for the sauce
Add pasta too the sauce and mix
Eat either out of the pan or put in a bow
It tastes fine and, with the addition of bread to soak up the extra sauce, filling enough dor lunch

Easy low-effort meal, overnight oats edition:
Making this recipe requires very little physical energy and very few decisions to be made, so I’ve been able to make it even on bad symptom days and/or in depressive episodes. Oats have a lot of health benefits that especially apply to fibromyalgia issues, including: regulating blood sugar levels, improving gut health and digestion, improving energy levels, providing plenty of fiber and nutrients, and they’re not inflammatory & gluten free. Same goes for the add-ins tbh, which also have a good amount of omegas and protein. You can personalize it based on what sounds good to you or what you have.
Tools:
Big container with lid (I use my 7 cup pyrex)
Spatula for mixing
1/2 cup measuring cup
Ingredients:
1 1/2 cups quick oats (I use Robin Hood minute oats)
1/4 cup ground flax
1/4 cup chia seeds
1/4 cup hemp hearts
Pinch salt
Sprinkle of cinnamon to taste (optional, but supposedly anti-inflammatory)
1 cup greek yogurt (I like vanilla extra creamy, but mix it up sometimes. I always get extra creamy though bc I like the thickness, and it has the most protein.)
1 cup oat milk (or whatever milk situation you have.)
1/4 cup maple syrup (or honey, and can use more to taste.)
Method:
Put all the dry ingredients into your container. I just eyeball the 1/4 cup by using half of the 1/2 cup so I only dirty one thing.
Give it a stir with the spatula until it looks evenly mixed.
Use the spatula to scoop yourself a cup of yogurt (again, I use two of the same 1/2 and the same spatula.)
Add in the oat milk.
Add in the maple syrup.
Stir it all up until it’s evenly incorporated. It’ll be thick, more like a pudding. And that’s it lol put it in the fridge.
To serve:
Wait at least four hours, but this will keep like a week if you don’t finish it before that.
It’ll be even thicker after sitting with those chia seeds. I think of it almost like an oatmeal concentrate lol - I scoop out however much I want into a little bowl, add in more oat milk, and mush it out to create a more classic oatmeal consistency. This stretches it out so you don’t have to make it as often.
If you want, you can also add extra maple syrup/honey to your individual portion, and/or a little sprinkle of cinnamon.
Again feel free to customize if you want to add anything in like nuts, dry fruit, flavors, etc but also it’s great like this if you don’t wanna think about it!
Any day you manage to feed yourself is a good day, and you’re doing a great job! <3

Y'all feeding yourself is so hard sometimes and I recently had a big brain move while I was desperately trying to increase my protein intake but also fucking depressed.
Chipotle or fiesta frozen veggie blends in the steamer bag, and a portion of these frozen chicken dices. Uses only the microwave, ready in less than 10 mins, uses only a single bowl (and if you do 2 serves of chicken I usually split this veggie bag in half for another even easier meal later)
I put sour cream on mine today but its fine without it, and I feel like this is way more substantial than a shitty frozen single serve meal, and also doesn't taste like sad at least to me

Dear Tumblr,
trigger warning: eating disorder, self harm, food
This is an opportunity to communicate your experiences, but I won't ask you participate if you are rendered uncomfortable by the prospect. I did use this to discuss my own experiences.
I've recently been reviewing some of my more problematic eating behaviors and thought I should make a poll for others. It is one part informative, and one part destigmatization.
Hopefully, this opens up conversation and doesn't demoralize nor shame people. There are valid criticisms to the below behaviors to be made: and I have exhibited them at different points in my life: heck some still apply.
(Examples are pulled from personal experience, but are not limited to those experiences)
If you feel like sharing any specific experiences, you are more then welcome, but again, you are more than welcome to lurk and view other people's experiences, just knowing other people struggle with the same thing can be reaffirming.
