Can I ask your top 10 fav fics ever (from any fandom, if you don't mind)?
Also, just curious, is there a story behind your name "askew-d "?
hello, there! sorry for the long wait, i forgot to check my notifs :( i will do better next time. thank you for this question! i feel like i’ve waited ages for someone to ask me exactly that, lol. i could talk about well-written fanfics forever!! can i give you a hug? because this is wonderful, really.
Tumblr media
let’s go for it! my range of fanfiction that i enjoy vary, but one thing remains: i will adore your fic, no matter the fandom, if it’s written with passion and if it contains good, poetic introspection. i love poetry. for me, if there’s melancholic tropes of any kind i’m into it. immortal character and reincarnation? give me now. supernatural elements or slice of life with doomed narrative? i’ll ignore sleep to read it. angst with happy ending? my endgame, for sure.
however, i also adore silly, comedic, cute pieces of domestic life or otherwise. i had a hard time choosing from my bookmarks for this, and i also reviewed some of my favorites, it was fun. before we continue, here are some of the tags that i don’t dive into for whatever reason: porn without plot (it personally just doesn’t interest me at all), non-con, gore, a/b/o dynamics, soulmates au. sorry if you were hoping for it! i’ll try classify them into an order of what i like most.
1. jellyfish, by mystery twin, for the haikyuu!! fandom — i read this when i was finishing high school and coincidentally the story talks about finishing high school! i have a personal attachment that makes me reread it every year. it’s some sort of tradition at this point. not to mention i love kagehina dearly.
2. teen project to change the world, by animeloverhomura, for the mo dao zu shi fandom — respectfully speaking, i would find this author and give them a big hug. their writing is spetacular! if you've never seen this one and you're into mdzs, know it's a story where the characters get to see every event from the novel and donghua, even the dead characters. they watch wei wuxian journey, can you believe it? so goddamn entertaining. promptly waiting for the next update!
3. a hundred or so hellos, by iwillstillopenthewindow, for the haikyuu!! fandom — remember i said i love melancholic stories? well, this one broke me so hard, i had to mention how i hold it with tenderness (we love things that breaks us, dont we?). this fandom manages to write the cutest, most unhinged things sometimes. even it's an anime about sports. i always get amazed by it.
4. no certainty of doors between us, by betts, for the mo dao zu shi fandom — certainly the most silly little fanfic i've ever seen, it's hilariously sweet. i want everyone to read this masterpiece because, seriously, whoever did this deserves only the best. so, so, cute. it had to be in my top 10!
5. their kindred encounters, by fireflavoredwhiskey, for the untamed rpf fandom (bjyx) — you know those kinds of shows, books, any piece of media, that tears up apart? well, this one was it for me. it's a very famous one that deserves all praise, certainly well-written and enjoyable to the core, with doses of angst, romance and beauty overall.
6. as the clouds part and clear, we finally meet again, by 12262325, for the mo dao zu shi fandom — aaaaa, i was truly torn between putting this in the third or fourth place, but i ended up putting it here. come on, i love an age difference kind of story, especially for wangxian, and this one was perfectly done. sweet and funny. the development? the yearning?? outstanding!! i read this many times already, i'll never get tired.
7. pursuit, by emleewrites, for the haikyuu!! fandom — mystery, romance, lawsuits, poker games, adventure, slice of life, AMAZING depictions and so, so goddamn well-written? that's what you're looking for in any fanfiction. the author dedicated herself entirely for this story, and, like i said, i love stories that are written with passion, you can see it pouring through every paragraph. besides, highly entertaining. i'm not very into long fics, but once i started it off, i couldn't stop. that's how addicting it is.
8. linger by the door (i’ve always been yours), by piecrust, for the mo dao zu shi fandom — epistolary?? have i mentioned how i love it?? some of the phrases in this are gold, in my bookmarks you can check some of them (i ought to make a list of my favorite fic quotes, btw, i will sure do it). through each letter i could comprehend more of wei wuxian's feelings and his internal conflict. i love feeling this connected to a character.
9. all the world is ours to take, by khrys, for the fugou keiji fandom — i have more than one favorite fanfiction for this couple. you know these kinds of developing relationship where the transition from (maybe enemies too) friends to lovers happens so smoothly that it feels like they've been soulmates first and foremost at the end? i don't even know how to explain. i just love how, when they finally are together, it's like they've been together for years. and they just... made it official? i like it. i love my mr. kambe haru.
10. he won’t tell you that he loves you, by hellshandbasket, for the house m.d fandom — i found this to be the most fitting, perfect story for this specific couple. they deserved more stories like this, but we dont see it anymore. i would hightlight the feelings realization in this one, that is so fucking real? haha in any case, it's a fanfic that i enjoyed a great deal.
that's it, i guess! i wanted to add link click fanfics also, however i barely started reading fanfictions from its fandom, i'm drowning in it lately but it's just a start. perhaps very sooon!
oh, i’m gonna finish explaining about the name! in my native language, i’ve heard someone tell me before that ‘life’s a little askew, nothing’s ever perfect’, and that quote remained in every biography of any english website i ever went to. then in literature class someday i had to write about historical women and came across this one named anne askew (i wanted to write about the mostly barely-spoken women). it was the second time i saw this word. i didn’t think of it as a proper name before, but then i had to create a nickname for my ao3 profile and thought, humn, why not just ‘askew’? the quote has been engraved in my heart anyway, so i went for it. we’re all flawed and askew. so, yeah, it just… fit? the ‘d’ here on tumblr it’s only because my surname has a ‘de morais’ in it. i also liked that it resembled ‘alaska’, the john green character i was kinda of obsessed with back in my teenager grunge phase. i don’t like these kinds of books anymore, but i guess some details stay with you. do you think it’s weird? never thought of changing.
thanks for this outstanding ask, it certainly entertained me. and hope you have a nice sleep today, big hugs coming your way! 🤍

Top 10+ notable baihe authors currently working today
1. Jun Sola
Jun Sola (君sola)'s claim to fame rests on her tomb-raiding epic Exploring an Empty Tomb (探虚陵), which she began serialising in 2010. It is now approximately 4 million words long and still ongoing. The epic tells of the adventures of sheltered but intelligent cultivator Shi Qingyi and the mysterious Luo Shen across multiple historical periods and into modern times.
A partial (8 out of 300 chapters) fan translation of the novel (historical section) can be found here.
A partial fan translation of the audio drama adaptation for the modern section of the novel can be found here.

2. Ning Yuan
Ning Yuan (宁远), baihe's own multi-genre queen, has been writing steadily since 2008. Her titles range from historical court epic At Her Mercy (我为鱼肉), sci-fi thriller The Creator's Grace (造物的恩宠), VR-themed novel Middle-Aged Love Patch (中年恋爱补丁), and showbiz romance The Show Must Go On (逢场入戏) For 2024, she has promised a historical cyberpunk baihe novel.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
3. Ruo Hua Ci Shu
Ruo Hua Ci Shu (若花辞树), who has been writing in the genre since 2012. She is probably best known for her historical novels, of which the most popular is Minister Xie (谢相). Billed (by me) as The Goblin Emperor meets Sha Po Lang, Minister Xie tells the tale of teenage female emperor Liu Zao's indefatigable efforts to turn her (significantly older) prime minister Xie Yi into her wife while trying to get to grips with ruling an empire.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
4. Jiu Nuan Chun Shen
Jiu Nuan Chun Shen (酒暖春深) shot to dizzying levels of fame on the strength of the action thriller Miss Forensics (我亲爱的法医小姐). The novel features a push-pull relationship between a forensic pathologist on a one-woman crusade of vengeance and justice with a self-destructive streak a mile wide and a police detective whose stubbornness is a match for hers. Its popularity is such that it even has some degree of mainstream awareness.
A partial (5 out of 144 chapters) fan translation of the novel can be found here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
5. Qi Xiao Huang Shu
Qi Xiao Huang Shu (七小皇叔) had been toiling unnoticed in the word mines for a few years before earning acclaim with her Republican Era tomb-raiding novel Reading the Remnants (问棺). The novel focuses on the adventures of five tomb-raiders: Li Shiyi (a veteran of the trade), Song Shijiu (a creepy fast-growing baby found in a tomb), A-Yin (a tomb-raider turned courtesan), A-Luo (the Overseer of Hell), and Tu Layao (a small-time hustler).
A partial (8 out of 115 chapters) fan translation of the novel can be found here. A second partial (10 out of 115 chapters) fan translation of the novel can be found here.

Her two most notable works are the contemporary age gap romance For the Rest of Our Lives (余生为期) and the showbiz novel (with a dash of rebirth) Waiting for You (余情可待).
Tumblr media Tumblr media

Tumblr media Tumblr media
9. Qing Tang Shuan Xiang Cai
Qing Tang Shuan Xiang Cai (清汤涮香菜, literally: Clear Soup with Coriander) is known for her mostly-fluffy, slice of life contemporary romances. Her best known work is Fascinating (入迷).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
10. Shi Wei Yue Shang
Shi Wei Yue Shang (时微月上) she came to the attention of the wider baihe audience with her 2021 infinite flow novel Players, Please Be On Standby (玩家请就位), followed by the transmigration xianxia novel Incantation for Subduing a Dragon (降龙诀).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Honourable mention #1: Tai Yang Jun
Tai Yang Jun (太阳菌) is a favourite among fans of the wuxia subgenre, which is under-represented within baihe. She is probably best known for the two wuxia novels Jianghu Demolition Squad (江湖拆迁队) and Song of Everlasting Regret (长恨歌), as well as the xianxia novel The Dragon (见龙).
Honourable mention #2: Misterande
Your one-stop shop for dark deranged toxic lesbians, Misterande's best-known work is the dark thriller I'm More Dangerous Than You (我比你危险), featuring a cat-and-mouse game between a serial killer and a writer of suspense novels. The manhua adaptation has an official English translation, which can be read here.

This poll might look a little familiar.... Due to a timing mix-up yesterday, I am proud to present the 'Best Non-Sword Weapon' poll take 2: Electric Boogaloo!
This time I've chosen to group the options by weapon with wielders in brackets*. Due to space issues, the media that each of them come from is under the read more, and this is definitely a non-exhaustive list!
*Except Xie Lian, who by virtue of winning the previous poll has been brought straight through to part two!
Thank you to everyone from the NiF discord and the watch party discord (and especially @shadaras) who have been amazing at suggesting characters with non-sword weapons! Couldn't have have done it without you! Also thank you to @thebansacredbanned who looked up the names of various obscure characters for me.
Propaganda, examples, and write-ins absolutely welcome!

Hils Watches Mysterious Lotus Casebook - Ep 3
It's the weekend which means it's time for more of these ridiculous idiots
Tumblr media
Oh no Fang Duobing met Li Xiangyi when he was ten years old and imprinted on him like a baby duckling. God when he finds out who Li Lianhua really is it's going to be beautiful and heartbreaking
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Amazing
Tumblr media
Aww he's dreaming about Li Xiangyi. I don't even know which of his names I'm supposed to use so I'm going with that one
Tumblr media
He does look good all bloody
Tumblr media
Oh, hey, he was in Love and Redemption with Cheng Yi (and Word of Honor without Cheng Yi obv)
Tumblr media
I've seen her in other things too
Tumblr media
I would love to see Cheng Yi and Liu Chang in a drama together. They're both very good at just dropping
Tumblr media
I'm not sure anyone spits blood like Cheng Yi does. Not even Zhu Yilong. I think in Love and Redemption it was almost every episode.
Tumblr media
I'm sure I've seen him in something else too but I can't see him on the MDL cast list so not sure
Tumblr media
I love this. 'The treatment I gave you changed your appearance so much no one will recognise you' but it's still the same actor who does, in fact, look exactly the same as he did before. This is like in The Untamed when Wei Wuxian possesses someone else's body but it's still Xiao Zhan. At least in Nirvana in Fire they had someone else play Mei Changsu in the flashbacks so you could see that he'd changed
Tumblr media
I love that you can just walk into an inn, ask which room one of the patrons is staying in, and they'll tell you
Tumblr media
He does love threatening Li Xiangyi with his sword
Tumblr media
OH SHIT! I wasn't expecting named support characters to get killed off this soon. No one is safe!
Tumblr media
Dude, come on. He was with you the entire time and you're smarter than to blame it on sorcery
Tumblr media
You were the one keeping watch outside the room and you're very quick to blame someone else so I'm starting to think it might have been you
Tumblr media
I love him just casually giving Fang Duobing detective lessons. Aww he's taken him on as a disciple just like he promised
Tumblr media
Believing in ghosts is stupid but accusing someone of sorcery is totally fine

Fandom is playing detectives again! Fans suspect that the "colleague" with whom HJJ went out eating a few days ago was XZG based on the photos they both posted - and the fact that XZG can't eat spicy food, among other things.
But, yeah, it honestly wouldn't surprise me if they decided to keep their friendship secret. I mean, XZG is Xiao Zhan's X-Nine mate, after all, so he knows very well what XZ and WY went through after The Untamed.

Okay, so. A thought came to me. And it's semi supernatural? Like cursed object? Okay, uh...wait. Oh right! So,
...
...
oh yeah! Zhan Yao finds an old artifact and he has to transport it with Bai Yutong because people that are in contact with it claims they've time traveled, or whatever, right? And in the midst of transporting it, some criminals are chasing them cuz they want to steal it from some rich ass collector for whatever reason. Zhan Yao and Bai Yutong ends up in a crash cuz assholes stepped on the gas. (Poor little white car, it will be missed and fixed, or replaced. Cuz Yutang rich) Anyways, the car jerks and flings them around. When they open their eyes again, there are guns pointing at them. And a man approaches them, tells them they are under arrest for trying to steal a priceless artifact, and are taken to the police station where they are interrogated by dun dun dun!!!! Jiang Yuelou, who is in charge of recovering the stolen artifact, which at this time it's not and its just a rich man's love token from his deceased wife and he treasures the pocket watch a lot. Things happen, people gets kidnapped, some die and others get hurt, Yuzhi gets caught in the crossfire and saved by Zhan Yao who also gets caught in the crossfire, because they attract trouble like bees to honey. (Zhan Junbai may or may not be an ancestor.) Things get weird but along the way Yuelou and Yuzhi trusts Bai Yutong and Zhan Yao. (They can't be that bad if they rescued Yuzhi.) Yutong gets jealous because Xiao Bai stole Zhan Yao from him. And they eventually go back to their time via the power of the pocket watch and realize that only minutes, hours maxed, has passed despite being in the past for months. They doubt whether or not it was real. (Maybe they end up bring back a tiny proof that they did in fact time travel.) And artifact cracked so its not like they can try again. Maybe they'll meet Yuelou and Yuzhi of the future one day. Or maybe they are the reincarnated versions. I don't know. TBH, the idea was just "Bai Yutong and Zhan Yao time travels and meets Jiang Yuelou and Chen Yuzhi."
Ohhh...I'm listening, I'm listening...so what you're telling me is that Zhan Yao and Bai Yutong basically get isekaied back to Jiang Yuelou and Chen Yuzhi's time period...that's fucking hilarious, I love it
Zhan Yao and Bai Yutong had been assigned to some weird cases before but they swore this one was the fucking weirdest
You see, they walked into the office one day, only to be greeted by Bao Sir, who held a small box in his hand
“Bao Sir”
Bao Sir smiled before he held out the box to them
“I have a special assignment for you two”
Bai Yutong and Zhan Yao frowned before Bai Yutong reached out and took the box from him, opening it before he looked at him in confusion
“A…watch?”
Bao Sir nodded as he handed them a piece of paper with an address on it
“Yes.  A local professor who is a friend of mine asked me if I would put my two best detectives on an assignment of transferring this watch to the local museum”
Bai Yutong and Zhan Yao frowned
“Why did he want us?”
Bao Sir shrugged
“I’m not entirely sure.  When I asked, he said that all of the people he had previous asked to transport said watch mysteriously…disappeared”
Bai Yutong and Zhan Yao’s eyes widened
“Disappeared?!”
Bao Sir nodded
“Apparently, according to him, they all “time traveled”.  But that, of course, is nonsense as time travel doesn’t exist.  And since you both are men of science, I doubt you’ll have any problems”
He then smiled
“Good luck”
He then walked past them, leaving Zhan Yao and Bai Yutong alone with the box, a stunned look on both of their faces
After he left, Zhan Yao and Bai Yutong looked down at the watch before Bai Yutong sighed
“Come on, let’s get this over with so we can focus on actually important cases”
He then closed the box and turned, heading out of the department, Zhan Yao on his heels
After leaving the department, Zhan Yao and Bai Yutong got into Bai Yutong’s car, Bai Yutong typing the address into his phone’s GPS before he put the car into drive and began making their way towards the museum
As they drove towards the museum, Zhan Yao looked at the box in his lap before he opened it and pulled out the watch, looking at it
Bai Yutong glanced over at him before he hummed
“Do you believe what Bao Sir said?”
Zhan Yao glanced back at him
“What, that this watch causes people to time travel?”
Bai Yutong nodded
“Yeah”
Zhan Yao shook his head
“There’s no such thing as time travel”
Bai Yutong frowned
“But how do you explain those disappearances?”
Zhan Yao hummed
“Well, maybe they got killed?  Because this watch seems pretty valuable and looks like something that would be in a collector’s collection”
Bai Yutong frowned
“Are you serious?  You think a collector actually had them killed?”
Zhan Yao chuckled softly
“You’d be amazed at collectors will do to get their grubby hands on something valuable or priceless”
Bai Yutong hummed
“I guess so”
As they continued down the road and through the intersection, they didn’t even see a large white truck coming towards them from the left until they were suddenly t-boned, causing both of them to cry out in shock as Bai Yutong’s Lamborghini flipped multiple times before it finally came to a stop
As it sat there in the middle of the road, smoking, one of the people in the white truck (who were actually hired by a collector to steal said watch that Bai Yutong and Zhan Yao were assigned to transport) got out and walked over to Bai Yutong’s Lamborghini, looking inside only to find it empty
“What the fuck?”
Meanwhile, when Bai Yutong and Zhan Yao both slowly opened their eyes, they blinked a few times in confusion, only to realize that there were guns pointed in their faces, causing their eyes to widen in shock
“What the hell?!”
Just then a tall man with light tan skin, brown eyes, and black hair styled in an undercut, his eyes hard
“You’re under arrest”
Zhan Yao and Bai Yutong looked at him in confusion
“For what?!”
The man huffed
“For theft”
“Theft?!”
The man pointed to the watch in Zhan Yao’s hand
“That’s an important artifact and you’ve stolen it”
Both Zhan Yao and Bai Yutong looked down at the watch before they both shook their heads
“No, we were just—”
Just then, two officers surged forward and grabbed them, yanking the watch out of Zhan Yao’s hand as the man waved his hand
“Take them back”
The officers nodded and began dragging Zhan Yao and Bai Yutong away, both men struggling desperately in their grasps
A little while later, both Bai Yutong and Zhan Yao sat in a cell, irritation on their faces just as a tall man with light skin, brown eyes, and short black hair walked into the cell and raised an eyebrow
“Stealing a precious artifact…that’s pretty ballsy”
Bai Yutong tsked
“Look, buddy, we didn’t still shit.  We were assigned to transport that watch to a local museum”
The man raised an eyebrow
“Oh yeah?  And who assigned you to do that?”
“Commissioner Bao Heizei of the Hong Kong Police Department”
The man frowned
“Commissioner Bao?  I’ve never heard of him”
He then looked Bai Yutong and Zhan Yao up and down and hummed
“I don’t believe I’ve ever seen you two either.  What’s your name?”
Bai Yutong and Zhan Yao glanced at each other before they looked back at him
“Sergeant Bai Yutong and Dr. Zhan Yao, SCI”
 The man frowned
“SCI?”
“Special Cases Investigation unit”
Bai Yutong then motioned to his pocket
“Check my ID if you don’t believe me”
The man hummed before he stepped forward and pulled out Bai Yutong’s ID card, looking at it
“Never heard of it.  Nor you”
He then placed his ID back in his pocket before he crossed his arms
“I don’t believe either of you”
Bai Yutong groaned as Zhan Yao looked at him
“We didn’t steal the watch, we promise.  Just let us call our Commissioner and he’ll explain it to you”
The man scoffed
“Yeah, I’m not going to do that”
Bai Yutong growled
“What do we have to do to prove to you that we didn’t fucking steal that damn watch?”
The man hummed just as Zhan Yao looked at him
“Do you even have any evidence that we stole the watch?  Other than it being in our possession?  Did anyone see us steal it?”
The man was quiet before he shook his head, a look of irritation on his face
“No”
Zhan Yao smirked
“Then you can’t hold us.  It’s just probable cause.  Until you have more evidence to link us to the theft, you have to let us go”
The man growled before he snapped his fingers, two officers soon rushing forward
“Yes Chief Jiang?”
The man, Chief Jiang Yuelou, motioned to Bai Yutong and Zhan Yao
“Release them”
The officers looked at him in shock but quickly did as they were told, as they didn’t want to get on his bad side
Once they were released, Bai Yutong and Zhan Yao looked at Jiang Yuelou as he narrowed his eyes at them
“Don’t go far…I will find a way to arrest you”
Bai Yutong huffed
“Yeah, good luck with that”
He then patted himself down before he looked at Jiang Yuelou
“Where can we get our guns back?”
Jiang Yuelou motioned with his head
“Follow me”
He then led them through the prison, both men looking around with wide eyes; it was nothing like the prisons that they were used to
Jiang Yuelou then motioned to an officer, who placed Zhan Yao and Bai Yutong’s guns before them, Bai Yutong taking his gun first before he handed Zhan Yao his
They both then looked at Jiang Yuelou
“We’ll be seeing you”
They then turned and headed out of the prison, Jiang Yuelou watching them with narrowed eyes
After leaving the prison, Bai Yutong and Zhan Yao looked around with wide eyes; they had no idea where they fuck they were…but considering the police uniforms that the officers were wearing…it definitely wasn’t their era
“Did we actually time travel?”
Bai Yutong shrugged
“Hell if I fucking know.  All I know is that we need to get back to the HKPD or Bao Sir is gonna have our asses for fucking up this assignment”
Zhan Yao nodded
“Yeah”
They then began through the city, looking around in awe
“Jesus, it really feels like we’ve jumped back in time”
Zhan Yao hummed
“Maybe we have”
Bai Yutong looked over at him incredulously
“Don’t tell me you actually believe that the watch causes people to time travel”
Zhan Yao motioned to their surroundings
“Look where we are, Yutong!  How do you explain this?”
Bai Yutong was quiet before he huffed
“I don’t know”
Zhan Yao nodded
“That’s what I thought”
Bai Yutong tsked before he reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone, only to find that he had no service
“Well fuck me, we can’t even call Commissioner Bai to let him know what happened”
Zhan Yao frowned and quickly pulled out his phone as well, only to find that he also didn’t have service
“Damn”
Bai Yutong groaned
“Well, this is just great, isn’t it?”
Zhan Yao hummed and placed his phone back in his pocket as he sighed
“So we’re somehow trapped in another time period and we can’t contact our boss…this seems like a nightmare”
Bai Yutong nodded
“Yeah, it does”
Just then, his eyes widened
“Fuck, the watch!”
Zhan Yao frowned
“What about the watch?”
Bai Yutong gave him a look
“We don’t have the watch anymore!  How are we supposed to transport it if we don’t even have it?!”
Zhan Yao paused before he hummed
“You’ve got a point…do you think that Chief Jiang would be willing to give it back?”
Bai Yutong scoffed
“Yeah, I fucking doubt it”
Zhan Yao hummed
“Well…shit”
Bai Yutong huffed
“You can say that again”
They both then sighed before they began walking, thinking about how they were going to get the watch back as well as get back to their own time when they heard shouting coming from a nearby alley, causing them to look at each other in concern before they ran towards the shouting, their eyes widening at the sight of two thugs beating up an old man
At the sight, Bai Yutong growled and quickly drew his gun
“Stop!  Police!”
At the bark, the two thugs turned to look at them before they scoffed
“You two aren’t police.  Get lost”
Bai Yutong narrowed his eyes and placed his finger on the trigger
“Step away from him or I’ll shoot”
The two men laughed
“You’ll do no such thing”
Just then, a gunshot echoed through the air before one of the men went down with a scream, clutching at their leg
They all then looked over at Zhan Yao, who was looking at them calmly, his own gun in his hand
“You never said anything about me taking a shot.  Now get lost”
The two thugs nodded and quickly rushed out of the alley, one of the thugs supporting the other as they ran
Once they were gone, both Zhan Yao and Bai Yutong putting their guns away before they rushed over to the old man and looked him over
“Sir, are you alright?”
The old man nodded
“Yes, thank you”
Zhan Yao noticed that he was bleeding from a head wound, causing him to frown
“You’re bleeding.  We should take you to the hospital”
The old man shook his head
“No need.  Just take me to Yuzhi Hall”
Bai Yutong frowned
“Yuzhi Hall?”
The old man nodded
“It’s a clinic”
Bai Yutong and Zhan Yao both nodded in understanding before they carefully helped the old man to his feet and led him through the street, allowing him to show them where Yuzhi Hall was
When they arrived and stepped inside, a young man took one look at them before his eyes widened and he quickly rushed over to them, taking the old man out of his arms before he guided him over to one of the chairs in front of his desk and sat him down
Once he was sitting, he quickly got to work on cleaning and bandaging the man’s wounds before he looked over at Zhan Yao and Bai Yutong
“What happened?”
“Uh, we saw him getting attacked in an alley not too far from here.  We fought them off and then brought him here at his request”
The young man nodded slowly
“I see”
He then turned back to the old man and smiled gently
“How are you feeling now?”
The old man nodded
“Fine, Dr. Chen”
The young man, Dr. Chen Yuzhi, smiled
“Good, that’s good.  But I think you should just rest for a little bit before you head on your way, hmm?”
The old man nodded
“Alright”
Chen Yuzhi then tilted his head at him
“Tea?”
The old man nodded
“Please”
Chen Yuzhi nodded before he looked at Zhan Yao and Bai Yutong
“And for you?”
Both Zhan Yao and Bai Yutong looked at each other before they nodded
“Please”
Chen Yuzhi smiled and nodded before he turned and headed off to make some tea as the old man looked at Bai Yutong and Zhan Yao
“Thank you for saving me back there”
He then tilted his head
“Are you two new police recruits?  I don’t believe I’ve seen you before”
Bai Yutong and Zhan Yao shook their heads
“We’re police officers, but not from here.  We’re from Hong Kong”
The old man looked at them curiously
“What brings two police officers from Hong Kong to Jing City?”
Zhan Yao frowned
“Is that where we are?”
The old man nodded
“Indeed”
Bai Yutong nodded slowly
“And…what year is it?”
“1920”
Both Zhan Yao and Bai Yutong looked at him in shock
“1920?!”
The old man laughed
“What year were you expecting?”
Zhan Yao and Bai Yutong both blinked, just as Jiang Yuelou stepped into the clinic and frowned
“The hell are you two doing here?”
Bai Yutong and Zhan Yao turned to look at him before Bai Yutong huffed
“We could say the same thing.  You don’t look sick”
Jiang Yuelou tsked
“Neither do you”
Just then, Chen Yuzhi walked back out with three tea cups full of tea and handed one to the old man before he looked at Jiang Yuelou and smiled as he handed Zhan Yao and Bai Yutong their tea
“Yuelou.  What are you doing here?”
Jiang Yuelou looked at him and smiled before he cleared his throat
“Well, I was hoping you’d maybe know who the owner of this watch was”
He then reached into his pocket and pulled out the pocket watch his men had taken from Zhan Yao earlier
Just then, the old man gasped
“My watch!”
Jiang Yuelou, Bai Yutong, and Zhan Yao looked at him with wide eyes
“This is your watch?”
The old man nodded as he pushed himself to his feet and walked over to Jiang Yuelou, taking the watch out of his hand, a fond smile on his face before he looked at Jiang Yuelou
“I was on my way to the police station to see if you had found it when I was jumped. Where did you find it?”
Jiang Yuelou glanced at Bai Yutong and Zhan Yao before he cleared his throat
“Oh, one of my men found it”
The old man nodded slowly before he looked at Bai Yutong and Zhan Yao and held out the watch
“Here.  As thanks for saving me earlier”
Bai Yutong, Zhan Yao, and Jiang Yuelou looked at him in shock before Jiang Yuelou shook his head
“But…isn’t that the watch your wife gave you?”
The old man smiled
“Yes, but I think she’d be happy to know that it went to people with good hearts like them, since she had a good heart”
Both Bai Yutong and Zhan Yao blinked in shock before they bowed, Zhan Yao carefully taking the watch from him
“Thank you.  We’ll take good care of it”
The old man smiled and nodded before he continued out of the clinic, Jiang Yuelou, Chen Yuzhi, Zhan Yao, and Bai Yutong watching him leave before Bai Yutong and Zhan Yao looked at the watch
“Now we can fucking go home”
Zhan Yao let out a sigh of relief
“Thank God”
Chen Yuzhi tilted his head curiously
“You needed the watch to go home?”
Bai Yutong and Zhan Yao looked at him then at Jiang Yuelou before they both sighed
“It’s a…bit of a weird story and I don’t think you’re going to believe us even if we told you”
Jiang Yuelou crossed his arms
“Try us”
Bai Yutong and Zhan Yao looked at each other before they sighed and explained that they were from the future, that in their “era” they had been assigned to transport the watch that the old man had given them to a museum and that before they could make it there, they were t-boned by a truck
“However, instead of…basically dying, we’re here.  In the 1920s.  And we’re pretty sure this watch brought us here, especially because the person who owned the watch said it caused people to time travel”
Both Jiang Yuelou and Chen Yuzhi stared at them in shock before Jiang Yuelou looked over at Chen Yuzhi
“You’re the doctor here, Yuzhi.  You think they have a screw loose?”
Bai Yutong tsked
“We told you wouldn’t believe us”
Chen Yuzhi hummed
“Well…I don’t know if it’s entirely possible but…I think they’re telling the truth”
Jiang Yuelou looked at him in shock
“HA?!”
Chen Yuzhi motioned to Bai Yutong and Zhan Yao
“Well, they’re clearly not dressed like us…so they kind of stick out like sore thumbs.  Does that mean that they’re from the future?  I don’t know but…maybe”
Jiang Yuelou hummed before he looked at the watch in Zhan Yao’s hand
“So how is that thing supposed to take you back to…wherever you came from?”
Zhan Yao shook his head
“We don’t know…we don’t know how it worked the first time.  I mean…we got in a car accident the first time…but I don’t know if we can replicate it”
Jiang Yuelou shrugged
“We can try”
Chen Yuzhi looked at him in shock
“Jiang Yuelou!  Absolutely not!”
Jiang Yuelou looked over at him and huffed
“I’m kidding, Yuzhi.  I wouldn’t actually do that”
Bai Yutong shot him a look
“Yeah sure”
Jiang Yuelou glanced back at him and smirked as Chen Yuzhi looked at them
“Well…since we don’t really know how to help you…you’re more than welcome to stay here.  I have beds upstairs…and while it’s not much, it’s better than nothing”
Jiang Yuelou glanced at him before he sighed
“Since you two are also police men, you can work at the department until you go back”
Bai Yutong and Zhan Yao looked at the two men in shock before they dipped their heads
“Thank you”
After the rocky start, Bai Yutong and Zhan Yao slowly began to get used to “living” in Jing City
During the day, Bai Yutong worked at the Jing City Police Department with Jiang Yuelou while Zhan Yao worked with Chen Yuzhi at his clinic
Even though Zhan Yao was police like Bai Yutong, he felt like he’d be use to Chen Yuzhi, since the young man worked by himself
Though they did come by the police department whenever Jiang Yuelou needed consultation on a case
Then during the evenings, the four of them would meet up for dinner at the wonton stand that Jiang Yuelou and Chen Yuzhi frequent before going to either Jiang Yuelou or Chen Yuzhi’s place to drink tea before going to Chen Yuzhi's clinic to sleep
And anytime they visited Jiang Yuelou’s place, Xiao Bai would absolutely clamor all over Zhan Yao, must to Bai Yutong’s jealousy because Zhan Yao was his cat
Everything was going rather well (though Bai Yutong and Zhan Yao were worried that their team was missing them) when one day Zhan Yao and Chen Yuzhi were summoned to the police department, only to find Jiang Yuelou, Bai Yutong, and a group of officers gathered in the lobby
“What’s going on?”
Jiang Yuelou looked at them
“We’re going to head out to do a raid on a known drug den.  We want you to come along as medics but stay at a distance, just in case”
Zhan Yao and Chen Yuzhi nodded
“Understood”
Jiang Yuelou nodded in reply before he headed out of the police department, Bai Yutong, the other officers, Zhan Yao, and Chen Yuzhi following after him
They then all got into the police cars before they headed to where the raid was
When they arrived, they all got out before Jiang Yuelou, Bai Yutong, and the officers made their way towards the warehouse while Zhan Yao and Chen Yuzhi stood a distance away
Inside the warehouse, all of the officers spread out while Bai Yutong followed behind Jiang Yuelou, Song Rong, and Sun Yongren, Song Rong and Sun Yongren flanking either side of Jiang Yuelou while Bai Yutong brought up the rear
As they made their way through the warehouse, everyone kept their eyes peeled when Bai Yutong noticed something out of the corner of his eye, making him turn before he fired, a cry echoing through the warehouse, making Jiang Yuelou and the others look at him in shock
“You could see that?”
Bai Yutong nodded
“Yeah.  So just keep going, don’t worry, I’ve got your back”
Jiang Yuelou, Song Rong, and Sun Yongren nodded, just as gun fire suddenly exploded boxes next to them, causing them to quickly take cover before they began firing back
Meanwhile, outside the warehouse, Zhan Yao and Chen Yuzhi watched the warehouse with nervous eyes, as they both had jumped the minute they heard gunfire
“I hope they’re okay”
Zhan Yao hummed
“Me too”
As they stood there, someone came to the window of the warehouse and pointed a gun at them, making Zhan Yao’s eyes widen before he grabbed Chen Yuzhi and tackled him to the ground, just as a bullet ricocheted off the roof of the car
“Stay down”
Zhan Yao then grabbed his gun and peered around the car, just as another bullet hit the ground beside the car, causing him to quickly duck behind the car before he peered around it once more and took aim, firing once
While he wasn’t as good as Bai Yutong, after training with him for a while, his aim improved and he was grateful for the time Bai Yutong took to train him as he watched the shooter fall forward out of the window
Once the shooter was dead, Zhan Yao lowered his gun before he looked at Chen Yuzhi
“Are you alright?”
Chen Yuzhi nodded
“I’m fine”
Zhan Yao nodded
“Good”
Meanwhile, back in the warehouse, Bai Yutong, Jiang Yuelou, Song Rong, Sun Yongren, and the other officers were taking down the dealers, doing their best not to get shot at
After they had taken out the drug dealers, Jiang Yuelou looked around
“Is everyone alright?  Any causalities?”
All of his officers, including Bai Yutong, Song Rong, and Sun Yongren, shook their heads, causing him to nod
“Good.  Seize the drugs and let’s go”
The officers nodded and quickly began to drag boxes and boxes full of drugs out of the warehouse as Jiang Yuelou, Bai Yutong, Song Rong, and Sun Yongren walked out of the warehouse and over to where Zhan Yao and Chen Yuzhi were waiting
“Everything okay out here?”
Zhan Yao huffed
“Someone took a shot at us, but other than that, we’re fine”
Jiang Yuelou’s eyes widened
“What?!”
He then looked at Chen Yuzhi in concern
“Are you hurt?”
Chen Yuzhi smiled and shook his head
“No, thanks to Zhan Yao, I’m fine”
Jiang Yuelou looked over at Zhan Yao with a raised eyebrow, just as Zhan Yao pulled out his gun
“You forget, Chief Jiang, that I’m also a police officer”
Jiang Yuelou huffed softly and nodded
“Right, forgive me”
He then turned towards the warehouse, where the rest of the officers were exiting
“Is that everything?”
The officers turned to look at him
“There’s one more box inside”
Meanwhile, unknown to the officers, the drug dealers had set up a trap of a bomb to go off the minute it reached “zero” and there was only three seconds left on the bomb
Then, all of a suddenly, the warehouse exploded, sending everyone flying in the blast, Zhan Yao and Bai Yutong clinging to each other as they hit the ground, Zhan Yao accidentally landing on the pocket watch that was in his pocket
A little while later, when Zhan Yao and Bai Yutong woke up, they found themselves in hospital beds, Bao Sir and the other S.C.I. members gathered around them
“Dr. Zhan!  You’re awake!”
Zhan Yao let out a soft groan
“What happened?  Where are we?”
Bao Sir huffed
“You’re in the hospital.  You and Bai Yutong have been unconscious for hours”
Zhan Yao frowned
‘Hours?  It’s only been hours?  But…’
His eyes then widened
“The watch!  What happened to the watch?”
Bao Sir sighed
“Unfortunately, it was broken in the crash.  But the professor understands, he knows it wasn’t your fault”
Just then, the door to the room opened and a doctor stepped inside
“Ah, you’re awake, good”
He then looked at Bao Sir and the others
“If you’ll excuse me, I need to do a quick check up on them”
Bao Sir and the others nodded before they left the room, the doctor smiling as they left before he walked over to Zhan Yao and Bai Yutong
“Hello gentlemen, I’m your doctor, Dr.—”
Both Zhan Yao and Bai Yutong looked at him in shock
“Dr. Chen”
The young doctor, Dr. Chen Yuzhi, smiled
“That’s right.  I’m quite amazed you know my name considering this is the first time we’ve spoken since you’ve woken up”
Both Zhan Yao and Bai Yutong glanced at each other before Bai Yutong looked at him
“How’s Chief Jiang?  Is he alright?”
Chen Yuzhi looked at him in shock
“You even know my husband?  Is this really the first time we’ve met?”
Zhan Yao and Bai Yutong laughed weakly
“No, it is…”
Chen Yuzhi hummed
“I see”
He then quickly checked both of them to see how they were doing, and once he deemed them fine, he looked at them and smiled
“Everything looks good.  I’ll be back to check on you in a little while”
He then turned to leave when he paused and turned back to look at them
“And about Jiang Yuelou, yes, he’s fine.  He’ll actually be coming to interview you about the crash later on when you’ve recovered a bit more”
He then continued out of the room, leaving Zhan Yao and Bai Yutong alone in silence before Bai Yutong huffed softly
“So time travel…really does exist”
Zhan Yao hummed
“I guess so”
He then looked at him
“I didn’t expect to see them here”
Bai Yutong shook his head
“Me either.  You think they followed us?”
Zhan Yao shook his head
“I don’t think so…but I don’t know…all I know is that my head hurts”
Bai Yutong huffed
“Mine too.  Let’s go back to sleep…I don’t want to think anymore”
Zhan Yao laughed
“Me too”
They both then shut their eyes and let the drugs that were still in their system pull them back under, both of them trying not to think about how time travel was real…and how it was all thanks to one simple watch

Dramas/movies I've finished (or 'finished')
I've watched enough east Asian dramas/movies that I've tripped my brain’s "must make a list" switch. Updated 3/28
Blue = favorites
Also:
Dramas I'm watching / want to watch
Dramas I dropped
Dramas:
2gether the Series (Thai)
I guess a lot of people hate this and don't think the leads have any chemistry at all? But I actually loved them. It's not a hot-and-heavy kind of chemistry; it's very sweet and kind of innocent, but not facile. On the other hand, they were all I liked about the drama.
Ai Long Nhai (Thai)
This is the most ridiculous drama, and it brings me so much joy. Nothing hurts, everything is beautiful. Nhai is a precious scatterbrained bean, and Ai falls in love at first sight. All of the things about Nhai that drive other people crazy just make Ai go all fond and soft. I smiled so much watching this that my face hurt.
A League of Nobleman (Chinese)
Good but definitely felt like it was missing scenes. OT3 Lan Jue/Zhang Ping/Wang Yan!
Bad Buddy (Thai)
Wow this is good! It's Romeo and Juliet with some West Side Story thrown in. The actors are fantastic, and watching how they progress from sort-of-enemies to committed boyfriends is wonderful.
Bed Friend (Thai)
OMG Uea the sharp-edged traumatized bean, and King green-flagging all over except for that one moment where he needed to have his head flushed in a toilet for reacting in the absolute worst way. I love this show A LOT. It's not a perfect rendition of a young man who has suffered a lot of abuse in his life, but it handles that element really well (therapy and medication FTW), and the romance is sweet and sexy.
Between Us (Thai)
I liked the first half a lot, but didn't like Team very much after they got together. His personality/behavior changed; he was, IDK, tougher? earlier, which I liked a lot more. However, I LOVE Win so much I can't even.
Bad Guys (Korean)
There were several moments when certain things almost made me nope out (Oh Gu Tak’s entire self; my overwhelming desire to cut Jung Moon’s hair so that his one eye wouldn’t be perpetually covered up; the detective lady whose name I never bothered to catch), but I was so glad I finished it. Park Hae Jin in eps 9 – 11 blew me away; and the ending was kinda dark but in a way that was so satisfying.
Be Loved In House: I Do (Taiwanese)
Not my favorite Taiwanese bl, but not bad.
Beyond Evil (Korean)
Wow, so much going on. The characters developed beautifully, even though Juwon went through a bit of a bratty phase. I loved the mystery.
The Blood of Youth (Chinese)
I loved this so much. THE FOUR WAY BROMANCE omg. And the way the ML slowly but surely dismantled the villains' plans! He met every set-back with a “well, that’s unfortunate, but I can fix it.” It was great, even though the romance they shoe-horned in for the ML was annoying.
Dangerous Drugs of Sex (Japanese)
I watched this because I was curious. It was... Hmm. Well, all I can say is, if you too become curious, make sure you pay attention to the reasons it's 18+, and then assume it's going to be even more f*cked up than it sounds.
Dr. Romantic 2 (Korean)
Honestly I watched this for the Seo Woo Jin whump (Ahn Hyo Seop does suffering so attractively), but since doctor shows otherwise make me nauseous I didn’t watch the last couple of episodes. But I really liked the various relationships among the different characters.
Duoluo Continent (Chinese)
Watched this for Xiao Zhan. I’ve never watched anything like this outside of having caught a glimpse of the Pokemon and Yu Gi Oh cartoons my kid watched, and it was...different. The FL was so irritating, but I wasn’t burned out on this kind of FL yet when I watched this so it was fine.
En of Love: Love Mechanics (Thai)
Too short! The fact that is was remade with most of the same cast and an expanded story makes this one feel almost like a pilot. It was definitely good enough to make me track down the longer version (which I'm currently watching). YinWar are really engaging actors.
Fish Upon the Sky (Thai)
Same actors as in Never Let Me Go, but this one is a comedy. The main character is a high maintenance nerd who goes through a glow-up that almost no one really notices (because he's STILL a high maintenance nerd) except the guy who has had a crush on him forever. Of course it's a guy he thinks is terrible. I loved it. Which is weird because I generally hate comedies.
Handsome Siblings (Chinese)
I enjoyed it mainly because it’s ridiculous.
He is Psychometric (Korean)
Super cute, comfort show. The twists and turns were great. I loved the characters. Side note: the actor who played young Kang Sung Mo did an amazing job. I actually had to stop at one point and Google the cast to make sure the show hadn’t somehow managed to make the older actor look like a teenager because the younger actor absolutely nailed the older actor’s take on the character. (Turns out the younger actor is the ML in The Uncanny Counter! In which I also love him.)
Healer (Korean)
OMG I love this show. So much. I even loved the romance. I wrote a post about it. (Did I go looking for Ji Chang Wook’s filmography after watching this? Yes, yes I did.)
HIStory 4: Trapped (Taiwanese)
Getting into bl drama is a lot like getting into bl manga/manhwa: requires accepting that dramas with action/mystery/SFF are few and far between. (I would also add "dramas with adults" but there seem to be more and more of those these days.) This was one of the first bl dramas I found that wasn't just a romance, and I was SO EXCITED. It's a little cheesy, but I loved it. The cop/mafioso romance (which is also a grumpy cat/sunshine puppy romance) between the leads is a lot of fun. And it has what might be my absolute favorite side pairing: the always-smiling assassin and his adorable tiny cop boyfriend (a sunshine velociraptor/sunshine puppy pairing, if you will).
Hotel Del Luna (Korean)
This show is amazing! Jang Man Wol stewing in rage and ennui for a thousand years only to have everything turned upside down by a stubborn, good-hearted puppy-man who she ironically stuck herself with. The slow, heartbreaking, breath-catching reveal of Man Wol’s past. The range of creepy, sad, funny, heart-warming ghost stories. The characters. The production quality! Ah, so good.
If You Wish Upon Me (Korean)
Another OMG I LOVE THIS. Ji Chang Wook is so good at “sweet, tough, vulnerable, and a good guy despite being raised by wolves” characters. I did cry semi-regularly due to the nature of the setting, but while I usually avoid things that make me cry, this was good crying. And so worth it. Also, the FL is a hoot, and a BAMF when she takes on the ML's abusive ex.
The Imperial Coroner (Chinese)
Adorable nerds falling in love over corpses in ancient China WHAT’S NOT TO LOVE.
Jade Dynasty (Chinese)
I get why people don’t like this, but I did. It was a silly, sweet, fun story and it only required a time commitment of an hour and some.
Joseon Attorney: A Morality (Korean)
I wanted to like this more than I did, because Woo Do Hwan. Loved him. Favorite part was when he was imprisoned and being tortured and someone came to visit him in his cell and he was fidgeting and fussing with the filthy straw while he talked with them. Like. Oh honey. WTF are you doing, just have a good cry and take a nap before your next torture session my babie. But I got kind of bored? As soon as we found out what happened to his sister I gave up and fast-forwarded through the rest so I could at least see what happened.
Jun & Jun (Korean)
I had to be in the right mood to watch this (open to a silly office romance with ALL the tropes), but when I did finally watch it I loved it. There is second (and third) lead syndrome, but all three of the men in love with Lee Jun are likeable, and I honestly would have been happy with Lee Jun choosing any of them. Also, Lee Jun is the most precious bean.
Lawless Lawyer (Korean)
I struggled through the middle of this. I’m not a huge fan of how in Korean shows everything always goes to absolute shit for the main character(s) mid-way through. I mean, I don’t mind that element of storytelling in general; it’s the way it’s so devastating in so many of these shows. This one hit me when I was in the wrong frame of mind, I think. But I’m glad I stuck it out because the way the villain was ultimately taken down was fantastic.
Love and Redemption (Chinese)
OMG LOVE. Serious, serious love. I wrote a post about this.
Love by Chance (Thai)
Ehhh. I ended up fast-forwarding through all of it except the Ai/Pete stuff. That is a great relationship, though. Pete has internalized politeness to an adorable degree, and is sweet despite having been badly burned; Ai went from "uninterested in dating anyone at all but assumed straight" to "oh I'm in love with this guy? I must be gay. Cool."
Love for Love’s Sake (Korean)
This was a sweet show. The concept was clever, and the way it held onto its secrets until almost the end worked really well.
Love in the Air (Thai)
I tried watching this about a year ago - first Thai drama, first bl drama - and I got through the first arc and quit, and didn't go back to bl or Thai dramas for literal months. It was mostly due to the production quality, the cheesiness, and all of the pouting Rain does. But I went back to it recently, after watching A LOT of Thai bl, and I actually love it? Still cheesy, still wishing they could have invested in a boom mic, but I can handwave that now I guess. I really, really love the second story arc, about PaiSky. Sky is a great character, and Prapai goes through character growth! Starts out a pushy, cocky playboy who thinks it's cute to stalk the guy he likes, ends up being a compassionate, responsible boyfriend.
Mad Dog (Korean)
MORE LOVE. This was the kdrama that caused me to fall down the rabbit hole of kdramas in general. I’ve watched this three times. The found family element, the character journey that especially Kim Min Joon but also Choi Kang Woo go through – help, so good. And what a great introduction to Woo Do Hwan. I wrote a post.
Maiden Holmes (Chinese)
This is like...if your favorite, heart-warming, Jane Austen-inspired romance drama was a mystery set in ancient China and had cool fight scenes. Comfort food.
Manner of Death (Thai)
This is barely a bl (very few bl tropes); it's more of a mystery with romance between the two leads who are both guys. Very good, if a little cheesy in places. And let's not talk about Tan's marriage proposal because wtf dude.
Memorist (Korean)
I watched this early in my exploration of kdramas and didn’t like it for some reason; I fast-forwarded through a lot of it. But I think I might have just not been in the right mood before, because I tried it again and it was excellent! The twists and turns of the mystery, the way things that seemed unrelated turned out to be all connected, was awesome.
Mr. Unlucky Has No Choice But To Kiss! (Japanese)
This was adorable! The main character had a lot more layers than I expected, and his love interest was so sweet.
My Beautiful Man (Japanese)
Two high school boys with problematic behavioral issues whose issues complement each other. It's unexpectedly charming and touching, and I'm really glad there's a sequel!
My Roommate is a Detective (Chinese)
If you want a bromance where you can easily ship the male leads, and has some whump, and you don’t mind cheesiness: here you go!
My Lascivious Boss (Vietnamese)
There's not a lot of Vietnamese bl out there, and I wanted to try one. This one is good; not the greatest acting, but still good. Also, the episodes are so short, so it's a quick watch.
My Tooth Your Love (Taiwanese)
One of the main characters is a dentist, hence the absurd English title. I'm not good with any dentistry situation so I admit I watched a couple of seconds here and there through my fingers, but it's really just a lovely romance. I can't remember where I read it, but this is a good description (paraphrased): the leads woo each other with plushies and naps.
Never Let Me Go (Thai)
Rich high school student's dad is murdered in front of him, and has another high school student, who has never bodyguarded before ever but his dad makes him do it because his dad is kind of a jerk, assigned as his bodyguard. Weird premise, EXCELLENT delivery. The actors who play the boys have great chemistry, and make the characters feel very real.
The Novelist (Japanese)
I don't even know what to say about this drama? It's a bit like those weird little Indie films from the 90s. Like, it's pretty good, but it's also...something.
Numbers (Korean)
I really liked this until the last episode. It fizzled out. Is there supposed to be a second season or something, maybe? IDK.
Oh No Here Comes Trouble (Taiwanese)
Oh this was GOOD. The title and ML's hair cut (yes I judge) made me think it was going to be silly, and there was silliness but there was also a lot of depth and emotion. ML's family situation is a traumatic running thread. The mysteries are clever and fun but heartfelt and sad too. It was just so good.
Old-Fashioned Cupcake (Japanese)
Oh this is so sweet! It's based on a bl manga I haven't read yet, but definitely will because this is just the sweetest, warmest story.
Our Dating Sim (Korean)
Very good, very sweet. I really felt for Gi Tae, waiting so many years, and then hiding so much anxiety.
Sell Your Haunted House (Korean)
Oh this is so good! A great supernatural show, with a great FL, and the FL and ML become besties rather than romantic yay.
Semantic Error [TV show] (Korean)
I watched this because I’d heard of the manga, though I absolutely wasn’t expecting to actually get sucked in like I did. Excellent show. Another one I wrote about.
The Sign (Thai)
I loved this so much!! Action, crime, reincarnation, mythology, romance, humor - there’s so much going on and I enjoyed all of it. The last two episodes used some hand-waving instead of explaining things, but I’m not mad. Billy and Babe had amazing chemistry, too.
Together with Me (Thai)
I couldn't get Manner of Death at the time, but everyone keeps talking about MaxTul, so I watched this. It's not bad.
The Uncanny Counter 1 (Korean)
The first kdrama I watched! The only reason it didn't cause an instant obsession with kdramas is because i started watching Love and Redemption after and that was 59 episodes of blissful hyperfixation. But I love the supernatural/superhero/semi-religious? aspect, I love the different families that the ML has/finds, I love the whump.
Under the Skin (Chinese)
So far this is the only modern Chinese drama I’ve been able to finish. The mysteries were good, the relationship growth between the two male leads was compelling! Good stuff.
Unforgotten Night (Thai)
This show is really pretty terrible. I'm incapable of not laughing when the soundtrack cuts to a track of ~Italian mafioso music every. single. time that Kamol comes on screen. But it's gone so far past terrible that it's come out the other side, and I kinda like it.
The Untamed (Chinese)
First east Asian drama for me! I watched and rewatched this show multiple times in 2021, and without it I don’t think I would have explored [read: become obsessed with] east Asian dramas. I’m still in the fandom and reading the fic and watching the FMVs and etc. I cannot quit WangXian.
Until We Meet Again (Thai)
This is an amazing drama. Romeo and Juliet, but make it a modern bl college story with reincarnation, and the reincarnated Juliet has PTSD from his past life memories. Excellent storytelling, acting, everything.
Watcher (Korean)
Ooooooh this is so good. All of the characters are so compelling, and the overall story kept me engaged. Also, Seo Kang Joon: yes.
Why R U? (Thai)
This is kind of terrible, except that ZeeSaint as Fighter/Tutor absolutely sizzle. I also loved watching Fighter figure out his sexuality via 50% dialogue and actions and 50% Zee's incredibly expressive face.
Word of Honor (Chinese)
I watched this after watching The Untamed, and was kind of meh about it. But then after I’d poked around cdramas a bit, I watched it again and loved it. IDK what happened, but now it’s a fave.
You’re All Surrounded (Korean)
Ok, the FL in this is terrible. So annoying. Despite that and some of the other things that didn’t quite click with me, I was unable to drop it because I NEEDED to find out how Eun Dae Gu’s story would end (very satisfyingly actually!).
Movies:
Long Time No See (Korean)
I love this so much! Assassins; cool fight scenes; traumatized lead; murder boyfriends! UGH it's so good.
The New Employee (Korean)
Not bad. Not great, but not bad.
Pipeline (Korean)
NGL, I watched this because I wanted some Seo In Guk whump. It definitely delivered! It was a fun, fast-paced story, with very little character development and a very underused villain, and really good action. I turned my brain off and enjoyed it. The only thing I couldn't help mentally griping about was the complete lack of ear protection in most (all?) of the drilling scenes. They should have all been partially deaf, good grief.
The Yin Yang Master (Chinese)
Wacky and good!
The Yin Yang Master: Dream of Eternity (Chinese)
Less wacky than the other one, but also good, and the bromance!!!

My review of Ancient Detective / 侠探简不知
Tumblr media
Jian Buzhi is a detective who embarks on a journey through the martial arts world to uncover the truth about his father’s death. He meets Zhao Wohuan, a brave but slightly airheaded bladesman, and Zhan Shiqi, a trained assassin who hides a pure heart beneath her cold exterior. They become a found family, later joined by others like the shapeshifter Ye Xiao Xiao and the clever doctress Gong Que.
These days, it’s hard for a wuxia fan like me to find a new drama that does the wuxia genre right. Not many are made anymore, and the few that do get made have mostly been disappointments. We’ve been plagued with bad fight scenes, unsuitable acting, messy writing, and stories that that are labelled “wuxia” but end up mostly being fantasy or political intrigue or idol romances.
But Ancient Detective has been the exception. It’s genuinely such an underrated gem! It has all the things you look for in a classic wuxia drama, while also keeping it modern with faster pacing and more realistic visual effects.
The action scenes were done really well. Every character has their own style of fighting and every fight scene tells a story. The horse-riding scenes look fantastic too.
It has all the tropes I love in wuxia dramas: the hero’s journey, brotherhood, doomed love, poisons and antidotes, nefarious sects, protagonists living in the aftermath of the previous generation’s mistakes, eccentric heroes, cool villains, mysterious in-betweeners, and more!
The mystery element is also well-integrated into the story. As a detective, Jian Buzhi stumbles across a series of mysteries. Each mystery arises specifically in the context of the martial arts world and ties directly into Jian Buzhi’s journey. If I had to criticize one thing about this drama, I would say that I found the second mystery subplot (when they arrive on the island) to be less interesting than the rest of the story.
The cast was full of actors that I had never heard of before, but they truly did an excellent job. Each character is bold and memorable, with their own eccentricities and demeanors. They bring well-timed humour in light moments and convincing emotion in dark moments.
I want to take a moment to mention that Wang Ruoshan (who played Zhan Shiqi, the female lead) was really phenomenal in this drama. She has a kind of epic demeanor that you rarely see in actresses her age. She brought out both the cold poise of a trained assassin and the vulnerability of an exploited young woman.
Basically, if you’re a fan of the wuxia genre, I think this is a must-watch. They just don’t make dramas like this anymore, so I was thrilled to discover Ancient Detective. If you’re new to wuxia and curious, I also think this is a great starting point because it’s by far the best recent take on a genre that many of us grew up loving.

Come a Little Closer if You Dare by Temporaryism (aka Me)
Category: M/M
Fandom: The Untamed RPF, BJYX
Pairing: Wang Yibo / Xiao Zhan
Xiao Zhan is a private detective hired to investigate Wang Yibo for the death of well-to-do Mrs. Archer's deceased brother—Wang Yibo's late husband, Frank Ellsworth. Things quickly get complicated when Xiao Zhan meets Yibo while undercover as a photographer for a local newspaper and develops feelings instead of making headway on his case.
Excerpt below the cut.
“And what’s with all the black, ah? You must dress this way deliberately to ruin things for the rest of us.”
Xiao Zhan’s remark is met with silence, so when he is done taking the next photo, he puts his camera down and looks in Wang Yibo’s direction. Yibo’s face is serious as he considers his hands, which are plucking at the seams of the cushions. Xiao Zhan knows he’s misstepped somewhere, but he can’t think of how he managed to do so. He opens his mouth, to say what, he’s not sure, but Wang Yibo beats him to the punch.
“They’re mourning clothes,” he says seriously.
“Oh,” Xiao Zhan says. He feels like all the wind has been knocked out of him. “Yibo, I’m s—”
“Don’t. It’s okay. You don’t need to apologize. Just wanted you to know. The black just seems appropriate.”

Can I ask, who are your top favorite romantic couples (can be canon or non canon) of all time from any media? Why you love them? Thx :D
here i go with another grand list that i was very happy to write! i’m in love with these asks, really. i’ll mention all of them, but at first i was in doubt if i could include one that isn’t ‘canon’, but rather rpf. either way, i added bonus couples for good reasoning! let’s go.
Tumblr media
1. wangxian (lan wangji x wei wuxian), from mo dao zu shi — they are THE moment, they are THE couple, they are THE goals. who ever could have imagined someone would come up and write a troublemaker who falls into demonic arts and gets reincarnated to fight together with a sucker-for-rules expressionless man and make it work? they fit into any au as well, this fandom rocks. my lovely cultivators!
Tumblr media
2. kagehina (kageyama tobio x hinata shouyou), from haikyuu!! — i dont even play volleyball. i dont even like sports! why do i love this anime and this duo specifically so much? they are so passionate about their hobbies, the rivalry and frenemy relationship? the POTENTIAL. the STORY they have. the "someone better will come and find you" promise. sheer beauty. they are silly and fresh and cute and i dont think i'll ever get tired of it.
Tumblr media
3. yizhan (wang yibo x xiao zhan), from the untamed cast rpf — i know all the problematics about writing real person fiction. i KNOW, okay?? but people, let me like them and support them in peace?? 😔 i have so much love for these men, and its overall hella fun following their life unfold, even if they are not working together anymore. nonetheless, they are my dose of serotonin when i need it.
Tumblr media
4. daiharu (kambe daisuke x katou haru), from fugou keiji: balance unlimited — i will not scream for a seson 2 here. i will scream for more FICS of them here! there ain't enough! its not even about the 'sugar daddy' appeal, its more about the 'partners in (solving) crime' appeal. oh and also the 'i hate you you arrogant prick but i WILL do anything for you' part. everything and every detail of this show.... seriously though: gold.
Tumblr media
5. hilson (gregory house x james wilson), from house m.d — oh, my sweet stupid and repressed doctors, i would do unspeakable things for you. wilson has been through every hard moment of house's life. you can name them, he's been there. through every ridiculous situation of his too. it is overwhelming, honestly. the ending couldn't have been more reasonable and fitting for them, in my opinion.
Tumblr media
6. hannigram (hannibal lecter x will graham), from hannibal — this gif alone of them with scratches and smiling conspiratorily to each other sums up their entire dynamic. they're toxic and no one's doing it like them. like, yeah, no shit, who would even dare, right? murder husbands can do anything and eat the rude as much as they want, i will be sipping on my drink and watching intently. (man truly looked at this detective he framed for murder and said he would remember their moment together forever??? just dont throw him in jail then???)
Tumblr media
7. shiguang (lu guang x cheng xiaoshi), from link click — these pretty boys traveling through time invented the concept of yearning, and i will not explain more to not give season 2 spoilers. i fell in love with them as soon as i saw the first shot of the anime. it doesnt help that they have the same dynamic as wangxian, too. cheng xiaoshi, my beloved, you would never do anything to harm anyone (not purposefully) and i (as well as lu guang) worship you 🙏
Tumblr media
8. renga (hasegawa langa x kyan reki), from sk8: the infinity — let's be true tho, can they never do a sports anime without pulling up homosexuals?? not that im complaining at all. please continue, in fact. every couple in this story is valid (adam does not exist), and i love this spirited, young concept of redescovering the beauty of a hobbie. lovely, all of them, but most specially my langa and his admiration for reki. their dynamic has no complications, its just so sweet.
Tumblr media
9. moshang (mobei jun x shang qinghua), from the scum villain self-saving system — i will not share a pic of moshang official art because i find shang qinghua appearence too much childlike and annoying, meanwhile i find him much more interesting in the book and fanarts. in any case, i love this couple more than the main couple simply because our airplane-bro can make everything so hilarious. there are fics of them out there which are peak entertainment (check this one!). mobei's tsundere attitude and shang qinghua's shamelessness are a great combo.
Tumblr media
10. hualing (hua cheng x xie lian), from heaven official’s blessing — the longing is unbearable. hua cheng loves this man so much, for real. waiting 800 fucking years?? being his most devoted believer? can you believe the audacity?? my man, though he has low self-steem, does anything to protect his god. he doesnt care about any realm. he only cares for xie lian, his dear god. they are the cutest couple.
Tumblr media
bonus: aziracrow, johnlock, tododeku, victuuri, blackbonnet, mafuyama, redblue (from this is how you lose the time war).
these are my favorite ships ever! they are what i scream about alternatively, and when i say so, i'm not joking. one week i'm freaking out over new link click content and in the other one i'm reviewing house m.d episodes. my life's a circle with my favorite ships in it and i ain't regretting anything.
thank you for asking, by the way! big hugs! 🤍

This is kinda hilarious, watching ZXG & HJJ's fans play detectives over on X. ZXG has this star tattoo on his chest. And HJJ wore this brooch in exactly the same place yesterday at the e-sport event 😁
Don't mind me, I'm not delulu enough to think there's anything real behind it but it's good fun, the way fans keep going through anything them two post with a fine-tooth comb! 😂
Just like when fans say that every Chongqing boy (Xiao Zhan, HJJ) needs a biker boyfriend (Wang Yibo, XZG). And it's even funnier when you realize that Xiao Zhan and XZG are band mates! 🤣
