hi! i was wondering how you felt about that "one" scene in winx club that was banned? did the scene go differently in the original italian version?

Hi there! First of all, I have the banned episode from this ancient Mondo DVD, since it's been taken down from youtube and other streaming services, even in italian. I will sub this ep regardless of the infamous scene, since I don't think there's anything controversial outside of that

In short, TLDR, in my humble opinion, the scene is racially insensitive and overly meanspirited from the heroines we should root for. The average italian kid didn't think much of it when it aired and re-ran, Italian adults lack the cultural context of black hair outside the country so most didn't understand the complaints and non-white italians did not seem to make any noise about this online. If anybody can prove me wrong is welcome to provide sources that I missed.

There was some disco resurgence in the early 2000s around, in Italy and Japan, so that's what inspired the scene, likely.

Is there a history of discrimination over textured and curly hair in Italy? As far as I know, no. You see white people with dreads and braids all the time and for historical reasons, curly and textured hair is common in people's genes. From what I've seen from italian forums and social media, I have read no complaints from black italians about the scene, so it definitely didn't move the italian black community or anything to stir any controversy.

Alright. With that out of the way... As a kid, I didn't think too much of the scene. I didn't think "wow, that hair is bad/ugly/something mean", or anything of the sort, and this seems to be the general sentiment from other italian watchers. I didn't think anything of the poor black girl being mocked. Being from a filler episode, the scene is rather forgettable to the average euro person.

I thought the hair wasn't even normal afro hair. And so did many others, according to italian social media posts...

I thought it had become JELLO! The hair is shiny and makes a strange noise when Bloom touches it. I'm still sure it's jello.

Bloom touching the hair unprovoked is also kind of nasty.

Some don't believe it's jello at all and I can't fault them for it, since the poor girl doesn't say any details. Just that her straight hair turned into "this thing".

The language used in this scene is meanspirited.

"What did she put on her head?" is a bit too much from Stella. You see a girl crying and you mock her?

The Winx don't even do anything for her, just standing back and watching. The Trix mocking her is one thing, but the Winx could have tried to help, only for them to give up as the girl has a breakdown, I dunno, better than nothing or Bloom's terrible attempt. The whole scene isn't easy to save and I don't think anybody should bother, not even the 4Kids edit improves it much. Just cut it out.

The joke was likely at afro hair looking funny itself, rather than make the black girl seem undesiderable for having an afro, as I've read from some interpretations. All italians I've read and asked agree that they didn't think maliciously of the scene as kids nor now. At least there's that.

A surprising amount of people thought the scene wasn't racist at all though, and couldn't understand why would this be offensive, while those who agreed it was bad still argued that banning the episode was too much.

The italian side has been very focused on the whitewashing discourse, though. Not since Magical Adventure as some have noted, but ever since the fairy couture dropped.

“I can’t believe you talked me into this.”

Saying (Y/n) was uncomfortable would be an understatement. She would rather be doing literally anything other than what she was currently: all dolled up in her spooky formal wear and an over the top masquerade mask, surrounded by her friends…and their dates. She felt awkward and sweaty in the ball gown, watching the couples dancing obnoxiously on the dance floor, and wanted nothing more than to be at home watching ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas,’ or something else equally as relevant to the holiday season.

“What do you mean? You look great.” Bert said, through a handful of cheese puffs. Even he had somehow landed a date, though Aisha swore she’d only agreed to go as friends, to put the poor boy out of his misery. (Y/n) didn’t really care either way, but it did sort of feel like a punch in the gut when even the losers she could count on being losers had left her in the dust.

“Yeah, don’t look now but tall, dark, and sexy has been watching you since you walked in.” Moon added, causing (Y/n) to turn in search of who she was talking about. And, lo and behold, there he was…

“Who is that?” She asked, turning to the group of her friends who, unfortunately, all seemed just as confused as she was.

“Don’t know. Guys?” Moon looked to Aisha and Bert who just shrugged. She turned to her date. “Hawk?” But the Mohawk boy just shook his head too.

“No clue. Can’t tell with the mask. Miguel thinks he might be some Miyagi-do chump here to try and take our turf.” He said, glaring pointedly at the guy, which caused (Y/n) to scoff.

“God, what is this, Grease?” She asked, making Hawk round on her.

“What’s your problem?” He complained, Moon quick to put her hand on his shoulder.

“She’s been like this all week.” She informed him with an apologetic smile that (Y/n) was a tad offended by, but didn’t have time to comment on before Bert was, once again, joining the conversation.

“We think it’s her time of the month…” He whispered loudly, Hawk’s eye’s widening in shock along with (Y/n)’s.

“It’s so not! What the actual f*ck!?!” She practically yelled, but with the loud music, no one seemed to notice. Hawk was the first to shake out of his stupor, and returned his gaze to the mystery guy, who hadn’t moved, though his attention had shifted to the dance floor.

“Either way, you should stay away from him, (Y/n). Just in case. We already lost Yas to those p*ssies.” He turned to look at the girl in question, who seemed to be having a grand time with Demetri and his Miyagi-do friends. (Y/n) rolled her eyes.

“Ah, yes. Cause she’s gone to the dark side.” She said, sarcastically making Hawk’s expression darken, as Moon frowned too.

“(Y/n)…” She began, but the girl wasn’t having it, and shook her head.

“I’m not a Cobra Kai, Moon. I have nothing to do with the weird little gang war you’ve got going on.” She turned to Hawk. “So go have a drag race, or a rumble, or whatever the f*ck you cobras do to assert your dominance, but leave me, the he*l, out of it.” (Y/n) wasn’t entirely sure where all that had come from, but she wasn’t exactly mad at it either. She was tired of all the fighting and Moon didn’t seem to care anymore how troubling her boyfriends actions were when he was around his karate friends.

(Y/n) eyes suddenly caught on a couple across the room and she made to go towards them, hoping that, perhaps, removing herself from the situation might offer the girl some much needed clarity.

“I think I see Miguel and Tory. I’m gonna go say “hi”… Unless, of course, you’re gonna tell me I should stay away from them too?” Silence. “That’s what I thought.”

Robby wasn’t quite sure who the girl was. Or why, exactly, it was that he hadn’t been able to keep his eyes away from her for more than a few moments since her grand entrance over an hour ago. He couldn’t even really see her face, a large mask covering the majority of it just like everyone else at the party. But there was just something about her. It was like this pull, and all he could think about was going over and talking to her. It was like nothing else in the world could possibly matter. And, consequently, it was so very incredibly infuriating. Robby Keene had put up with a lot in his lifetime. He*l, pretty much everything he had ever had going for him had eventually ended up screwing him over in one way or another. But this: the furious pounding in his chest every time he caught sight of her; this was a while new kind of suffering that was bordering on torture.

“You alright, dude?” Robby was knocked from his thoughts by Sam’s voice, as she, and the rest of the Miyagi-dos made their way over to where he had been leaning against a wall by the snack table. Robby didn’t answer her question, instead offering one of his own.

“You ever seen that girl before?” He asked, not even trying to be discreet about it, as he almost thought he felt the pull growing stronger. But that was ridiculous. Almost as ridiculous as it even being there in the first place… Sam turned to look where he was pointing and frowned.

“Can’t tell. Whoever thought up this whole Masquerade Ball really didn’t think it through that well, did they?” She joked, but Robby’s expression remained stoic, if not a little dejected by her response.

“No. No they did not.”

“Why’d you ask?” She questioned, causing Robby to turn away from the mystery girl to face her.

“Nothing…” He mumbled, not really wanting to explain it to her, for fear of the embarrassment that would follow. “It’s, not important…” She nodded her head, though he could tell she didn’t believe him. But, to her credit, she didn’t say anything else on the matter, opting to instead move on to something a tad more serious.

“Okay… so, are you ready or what?” She asked, reminding Robby of their, rather foolish, in his opinion, plan of revenge on the Cobra Kai’s for their most recent offense which, he wouldn’t lie, Robby had already pretty much forgotten about.

It was the pull. He knew it was. It was like it was sucking all the bad feelings out of him and replacing them with warm, fuzzy ones he definitely was not used to. And, Robby, shamefully, wasn’t entirely sure he didn’t like it…

“Yeah, are we doing this? Cause, if we are, I kinda wanna get it over with as quickly as possible.” Demetri said, suddenly, gaining Robby’s attention back to the topic at hand. Sam was quick to nod, a determined look in her eyes that the boys all found equally intimidating.

“We will… don’t worry. Cobra Kai’s not gonna know what hit ‘em.”

And Robby grinned along with the rest of his friends. Although, he hated to admit, his heart wasn’t in it, but, rather, just a few long strides across the room.

Ironically, she was currently ripping a new one into the boy whose night they were about to thoroughly ruin anyways, but he wouldn’t know that until much later…

I’ve been waiting to create a new neopet for a lil while but idk what to name her. I just created a toy Poogle named Joan Snocone bc I just finished rewatching game of thrones, but now I have no idea. I’m planning on a disco Aisha and already even bought the paint brush 😭

Idk if this is unpopular but

Bloom’s formal dress is not doing it for me. Its cut is very Edwardian/Regency era and the pattern is like a wallpaper type pattern. It looks so out of place compared to the other girls.

We saw her bellbottoms in S1 so she could’ve gone with a 70s, disco inspired look </3

I'M SO LATE BUT

if this is from season 3 i get it but it went in line with the inherent "fitting the vibes" thing they were goin on with, it had to be fancy and it was like. a party for the king

and collectively this is some of the better looks they've ALL had compared to lated seasons (except. aisha. i don't like her dress i don't know why)

and bloom isn't really 70's!! early 2000's y2k era fashion yknow, that kinda vibe.
