2023 Art Summary

that's right folks, it's the end of the year, and you know what that means here :3

it's been a weird year for me, with lots of difficult and new things going on, but i think that overall it's been an okay time. however, art stuff did not come to me as readily, most of the stuff here this year are either sketches during dead air at work or done in a big batch in one big spurt of inspiration. as per usual, i'll let ya know what all went down. it turned out alright :>

well, without further ado, let's get into it!

Continuing from the tail end of 2022, I got more requests for newer Pokemon to draw, and it was really fun! Having grown up alongside the franchise for so long, I find it really interesting that I can pick up how to draw them pretty quickly and pretty well. These were all first attempts with whatever idea I had in mind, and it was a good time :3

The next month continued the Pokemon drawing trend after I had discovered and played around with the Pokemon Infinite Fusion generator. I loved the dedication so many people had to make their own unique combo designs, so later on I had downloaded the Infinite Fusion fan game and had some fun with that!

Additionally, my partner Stacey was planning a homebrew DND campaign called the Afterworlds where angels and demons live in their own little lands. I ended up deciding on making a Changeling Bard demon of Pride, who I named Masque. I have their initial sketches here because it was sort of a pivotal moment in my character creation process. I had a vague sense of a design in mind, which I sketched on the left, but I wasn't happy with it - it was just too boring and plain. So, I took to the internet, and I looked up various references and inspirations and ideas and came up with the sketch on the right, which was much more interesting! Definitely more fitting of a dangerous entertainer type.

Once again, the months bleed together, and Masque's design was completed! I really fell in love with them and their design, and even though we only managed to do one session with them so far (mostly due to life stuff btwn all of us) I really can't to do more things with them. More things like debuting their stage persona, Escher a.k.a Ghost! As the leader of a ragtag group of traveling performers known as the Cabaret Depayser, Escher is a much more charismatic and charming facet of Masque that keeps them hidden from those who want to hunt them down. Since I haven't got to play with that side of them just yet, we'll see how that turns out :3

In other news, Pizza Tower was all the rage this month, and I couldn't help but be swept up in it too! It's an incredibly mesmerizing and fun-looking game, with excellent animation and music and everything. I eventually picked it up myself, but haven't gotten to play it yet. I did end up really liking drawing them, kind of forcing me to embrace a more cartoonish side of my art style, and it was really fun to do.

Also uh. I got sick. like... really sick. i never get sick. so i made an art to cope. this would not be the last time i got sick like that. was still funny to draw it out though

A rather uneventful month, but hey look! We've returned to Pokemon. This time I asked to draw some from memory, and overall I did okay, even for the newer ones like Toxel here. I got the general angery baby lizard vibes down.

I also drew my friend Cake's egg magical girl OC Sunny Side and her little buddy Tama in my downtime at work. I think she's neat and I thought she would be fun to doodle :>

I actually have a very valid excuse for this, because I was preoccupied most of the month with helping out my partner on her student film, which much like this wip was about our story Cosmic Legacy. I helped out with voice acting, voice mixing, and the music; although we weren't able to complete all of it and we still haven't picked it back up to finish it, I was still proud of what I was able to accomplish in about a month on top of a full-time job.

i've always wanted to draw some group with this shot as reference, and it worked perfectly with these kids, but i still have to. y'know. finish it

Most of the month was, again, sketches from work free time. I felt like doodling some of the Destiny Guardians from my own story The Dark Side: War on Destiny from memory, since I don't draw them very often but I still like them a lot.

Circling back to Pizza Tower brainrot, my friend Atlas and I started tossing around an idea of what if, instead of pizza and Italian inspiration, it was ramen and Japanese inspiration? I was really struck with inspiration by that thought, and came up with five new ramen-inspired Toppins: char siu pork, narutomaki, scallion, boiled egg, and wakame seaweed. I thought they all turned out really cute :>

And, as my one piece of actual polished art in literal Months... Genshin dropped a teaser for the new Fontaine region and showed little glimpses of this Melusine, and I was so enamoured I had to draw her. They are so cute and I like em.

sometime in between months, i got sick. again. just like back in march. but that proved to be a little bit useful because...

SURPRISE, IT'S FULL COLOR ART

it was Artfight time once again, and I did not want to miss out. However! I kind of monkey wrenched myself by doing the color wheel challenge that had taken the internet by storm during the time I was under the weather. I ended up finishing it by the middle of July, so I only had time for a couple of art pieces for Artfight after that, which is kind of what I did to myself last year too. At least I had a valid excuse with doing another big fun art thing lol

I still have so many color wheel theme ideas that I would like to make, but after this, life would really get in the way of things, especially art-making in general, so I definitely plan to revisit those ideas later

it was around this time of year when not only was it forest fire season, and i had an ear infection right after being sick, but it was also time when i started really considering and making plans to move out across the country. it was a really busy and stressful time, even outside of myself since my parents and their aging parents were becoming a situation i had to watch unfold and help support as best i could. i doodled a little bit during work but most of my time and attention was spent elsewhere. drawing Lyney from genshin from memory was pretty fun, though. i liked him far too much even then lol

September was when things ramped up even more, and on the 22nd I, with my mom's help, had left with my belongings and began the 3-day trek from Seattle, Washington to Albuquerque, New Mexico. It was actually a decent time with lots of beautiful scenery, which I'll provide here since I... got absolutely nothing done in this month.

also... coolest hotel ever. absolutely oozing with charm. loved it

and actually, i lied a little bit. once i had actually moved in and settled, as i was getting stuff to furnish the place i wanted to pick up something for a little art project to like. keep me sane. so i had found this little Dia de Muertos ceramic cat statue painting kit and fell in love with it and after many days and layers of paint i basically finished it at the end of the month and I think it turned out really cool!

and so, since September was a bit of a dud, here's an October double feature :D

Over time, I started getting into a groove and much more comfortable in my new home, so my art started to pick back up. A lot of things were on my mind: I wanted to start planning on a potential rebranding/vtuber career and made some iterations on a design for my sona's model before settling on the one here, I was extremely bored one day and decided to pick back up on a papercraft doll for my friend Cake's sona (coincidentally just in time for her birthday), I started getting back into TOME and did a redraw of Demon Alpha over a screenshot from The Owl House to revitalize my love of drawing from that franchise, I wanted to draw Masque again cuz the homebrew game had been dead on our group's end because of scheduling conflicts and stuff, and lastly I wanted to do another halloween vampire-sona piece and got the idea for a fun, spooky, sexy two-parter with some bloods. It was a good time and I was feeling on the up and up :3

This month was less up, not just because I did a lot less, but because... I got covid. Finally. After nearly four years of evading it, I think the new environment and stress got to me and got me infected just in time for my birthday :^)

I could barely get anything done during the time I was sick, but I did do a few cool things. Again, I had gotten back into TOME after watching through the A2Z movies, and the epilogue really got me, especially with the softlocke content. So I did some doodles in my spare time and only managed to get this one digitized (which i didn't post yet cuz i wanted to do the others too first, whoops)

The girl on the left is a product of a nifty design challenge I found while mindlessly scrolling thru youtube shorts, where you create an OC based on some traits of yours (here's the video i found for it). It was just a fun little prompt that got me to do a little bit more this month.

Then I wanted to practice drawing my new vtuber sona some more, and there had been this trend on Twitter where people drew characters in one of the poses from this K-pop music video GUILTY. It seemed like a cool pose idea, but I feel like a lot of the people who did it mostly liked drawing muscly dudes and rendering them or just drawing the pose to be sexy, but I was most interested in the context of the song which made it much darker and spookier while still being very sexy and fun to draw, so I focused on the spookier angle of it

and finally, December was a very busy month with the holidays as I was prepping gift-giving for work and my family, but I still ended up dedicating my time to a couple of projects in the time I could find in between

my main focus this month had been on an idea inspired by this series of videos by ABD Illustrates and based on some kinds of image combination techniques to make a bunch of genshin OCs based on a collage of every character of each body type. I had made five different ideas, each with a different element, weapon, and national origin, as well as movesets and even voicelines! But I hadn't gotten terribly far in rendering them, but I wanted to have at least a preview of one of them for this, so I started with my favorite of them all, Jack! He's the one I've become most interested in developing, and I like how he's shaping up so far :3

And, of course, as always, Pokemon runs through my veins and keeps me going. I did some doodles at work, inspired by Hoenn nostalgia after finding Alpharad's Too Many Types romhack to download for myself, as well as my latest playthrough of PMD Rescue Teams Red and Blue, including DX, which I'll be liveblogging here in the future.

Well, what a year it's been. I've done a lot more than I thought, despite everything, but I'm excited for the year to come, because I am dedicating it to all the WIPs I have gathered over the ages, and I will hope to see many of them done for the next summary! Until next time!

Interestingly, TCG2's retroachievements include some "gimmicky" challenges against the ghost decks, and considering the two I've been trying for, they can be rough lol

Got one today!

The Magician's deck is extremely interesting in some of the tedious plans he has in store for you lol

It primarily revolves around Alakazam's damage swap ability, but he throws in some additional tedium to earn his deck's title of "The Immortal Pokemon Deck".

Namely, he uses that high damage stalling Mr. Mime that I love/hate (love to use, hate to fight against) as a mini-stall against any high damaging attacks, along with the weakness nullifying pokemon power Mr. Mime so that stalling with Normal types won't do too well against him.

And I'm not gonna lie, and TCG players can scoff at my ignorance, but my exposure to actually playing the pokemon TCG is isolated to these 2 gameboy games- I have never fought against someone who used the cowardice Tentacool like this and it's EFFECTIVE and ANNOYING lol

Cowardice Tentacool is a 30 HP weak card who can retreat for free and the pokemon power allows them to scoop up Tentacool for free at any time on their turn.

That coupled with Alakazam means you can heal a ton each turn for free with just 1 in rotation.

Now, his AI is "Good" at utilizing this strategy, but he doesn't max/min his moves every turn, meaning he is more than happy to leave like a 10 HP Scyther in the mix on the bench despite having his Alakazam/Tentacool combo rolling because he kinda tunnel visions himself to making that combo clean his active pokemon completely.

Or maybe I lucked out, because Cowardice DOES have some text on it- he can effectively only heal 40 each turn "for free" if Tenta was already in play, but still, oof.

AND THE CHALLENGE THE ACHIEVEMENT LENDS TO THIS FIGHT?

You must face this deck with no damage higher than 20 the whole way through.

This means you can't nullify his strategy via one shotting his Abra / Weakness Nullify Mime / Scyther OR EVEN his 30 HP Tentacool- You HAVE to play into his strategy and give him the advantage to clean his field of damage whenever he likes.

The only benefit, unintended as it is, is that his wall Mime is meaningless now because you're always hitting under his damage threshold.

But man.

This achievement made Tentacool the entire focus of the fight.

I had to trick him into leaving it with 20HP and then swap to something that could do 20HP as well as gust him in.

AND THEN he has multiple discard recycling cards to get Tenta back in the mix.

This was fun :)

The other achievement I'm going for currently is less fun due to the cards I've been using but this was fun lol

I ended up getting it first try, but we were grind gaming the entire time- we got to the final few cards and I had to avoid using draw cards for that exact reason.

I went with a semi-stall gust deck, using Lickitung for consistent 10 HP para attacks and as a wall, and using Pigeotto whirlwinds and twisters to either keep his pokemon rotating or ruin his energy economy.

It definitely wasn't a primo strategy, I needed more "controlled" or "bench" oriented damage, but some gust of winds ironed out the kinks well enough.

DEFINITELY would have been nice to have some bench damage to more directly kill his tentacool without gust, but here we are.

Other oddball toss ins for this first attempt were the pokemon power Wigglytuff that can cleanse party members and has a 20 damage move, and Fearow almost entirely for a 20 damage move that also dodges (agility). I didn't come into this fight expecting Tentacool at all- I came in expecting Mime and Alakazam because I've already nuked this guy's deck a few times using a normal deck and those were the "problem" cards.

I never would have thought slowing things down would make Tenta the MVP lol

I LOVE No Straight Roads

Honestly it’s hard to keep me away from a game with great visuals and even greater character design. I knew from the INSTANT I saw these characters that I was going to love it. I just finished it because it’s (unfortunately) pretty short, and even though I cheesed the final boss through it’s very lenient death mechanics (Instant respawn at the cost of a good rank) I actually appreciated that it wasn’t a pure cake walk. I’ve yet to rematch all of the bosses, but since I had genuine trouble with the later ones I’ll hold off on that.

But who cares about gameplay, am I right? I sure as hell don’t. I would’ve bought the game no matter what the hell it was. I wanted the characters (and the music, although I realized that second) and that was it.

First of all, I love any world that is super fantastical but cheesy in its concept, ala a city powered by music, and battles between artists using music. Ideas like this only spawn from a mind that wants to create a fun atmosphere, if nothing else, and it was sure as hell fun. I genuinely love when someone goes so far into a crazy idea and doesn’t waste your time explaining it with real world logic. Wanna know how a city can be powered by music? Shut up and look at the cute virtual mermaid. Lord knows I did. Every once in a while, it does you good to just let the player/reader/viewer just revel in the idea without having to go out of your way to make things seem realistic. It’s not about “turning your brain off” or whatever, it’s picking your battles.

Also, I can seriously love a world with great background characters to it. Any game with the right situation to insert the random nobodies you find onto the streets into the art in the credits really played into the greatness of the world’s less important characters, and that’s always a good thing. It’s technically world building. But, since I always love to pick favorites, I’d have to say my favorite background character is easily Mia, the NSR infodesk assistant. It’s funny, because you can literally search “nsr characters” into Google and she’s the third image result. I love how jumpy she is when you first interact with her, since NSR probably spread the word about B2J suggesting they’re rock thugs who’d beat up anyone, so for all she knows she could die right then and there with a guitar lodged in her skull. She’s probably just some intern trying to pay for college. She don’t want trouble.

Also, I just realized that 90% of the characters in this game have the same body structure that I always love, that being having arms/legs that sort of fan out in width into relatively large hands/feet. It’s a kind of limb structure I fall into so much because it just really hits me right for some reason. I really can’t explain why.

Anyways, I gotta talk about the big boys individually:

Mayday and Zuke are an amazing duo. I’m always a sucker for a cute and crazy girl, but honestly Zuke hit so many of the right notes too. I will say it’s weird to pair the martian Zuke with the humanly-skinned Mayday, but honestly it doesn’t even matter because he looks so cool on his own. I love his weird blocky blue dreadlocks, and his weirdly shaped shirt which bares his chest in the weirdest way... And, oh my god, Mayday’s weird Spongebob background flower eyes? It’s little tidbits like that that really make me jealous. How could I have ever thought of that? It looks so perfect, and I don’t know why. And her little booty jig she does in her idle animation? Adorable. I played as her as much as was reasonable not only because I’m a filthy button masher with little strategy but also because she’s so damn cute. I can also appreciate how she has a tough-as-nails persona while still keeping a semi-girly attitude, like with her falling for 1010 and Sayu. Characters are so much better when they’re a perfect blend of characteristics, instead of being all one-note, like how Zuke is the quiet one but gets heated against DK West, and all.

Honestly the voice acting for every character is great, but I love when Mayday’s VA’s accent shows through. It’s a perfect twang to accent (consider this the only acknowledgement of a pun in this post) her snarkiness.

DJ Subatomic Supernova was going to be an easy favorite since he’s all space-themed. Also, I don’t know why I always end up liking the egotistic characters. Not in the sense that I like their egotistic-ness, but in the sense that I like everything else about them and they just so happen to also be egotistic. The same applied with Empoleon (maybe like my 2nd favorite Pokemon) and Rarity from MLP, probably among others. Either way, I’ll never not love space themes. Not to mention he’s got a funky disco theme, and I’m slowly starting to realize that I am in extreme love with techno-funk styles of music. The instant I heard his music he cemented his place into my playlists.

As for design, I still have no idea what the fuck he is. Clearly AI is at human levels in this world, but if he’s a robot why does he still have hairy legs? But, if he’s a human, is that weird orb his head? Is it just some sort of puppet which he controls from inside his giant jacket? I know I dissed explaining things realistically but I actually want to know with this guy. Even the wiki doesn’t say. Either way, he’s clearly the logical extreme of “being at the center of your own universe.” Even his jacket depicts a solar system, with his hood being the sun. Didn’t see that until I tried to draw him. I really wish this guy wasn’t so tied to his DJ stand so I could reasonably draw him without it. I don’t want to draw his hairy ass legs. It is a great touch for his design though (although I prefer his beta look with pants and long boots, another design trait I tend to gravitate to) since DJs could reasonably not wear pants, since they’re always behind a table.

Sayu is my favorite. It’s so plainly obvious. It’s weird to say that sometimes, because some characters like Sayu are so clearly engineered to be as adorable as possible, to the point where they’re basically a parody of whatever they’re supposed to be emulating, but then they do that so well that they are still likable for what they’re trying to parody. Also, even though I’ve never looked into any vocaloid superstars myself, the fact that they exist and are loved in real life is absolutely perfect to be used as a character design in a world like this. It’s so weird conceptually, but we all know it’s normal and realistic. But yeah, she’s a giga-cutie whom I’ve already drawn and I’ve listened to her theme on loop on many different occasions. Favorite character, favorite track, favorite weapon of choice (What did I say about Empoleon?), which, and I wouldn’t have noticed this myself, looks like the USB symbol you see above USB ports on computers. How crazy perfect is that?

Even apart from my unbridled love for cute monster robot(?) girls, her boss fight is probably the 2nd greatest of them all, at least conceptually. She’s just a hologram, so you can’t touch her, but you CAN disconnect the artists which control her in order to defeat her. It’s the kind of concept for a boss fight that could only work for this type of character. I’m a sucker for the cute girl that provides her voice, but I love how the animator (video editor? the yellow one) actually attacks you with a mouse and lowers the brightness of the setting once he appears. Also, the mocap guy being the deeply-voiced type but still providing the adorable movements of her body. It’s such a great combo of characters, and their little extra art in the credits makes me like them even more. I just wish we could interact with them individually.

DK West was probably one of the most interesting characters visually, especially since I knew of every other NSR member long before the game came out, but I only just heard of him closer to the release. I wasn’t sure where he was placed, but I definitely assumed his gig was the weird shadow demon we saw in the trailers. When I finally saw him in game, I was shocked to hear him speak an entirely different language most of the time, which was really cool. Also, finding out he was tied to Zuke and wasn’t strictly an NSR artist really made him more interesting. You know, if his fucking shadow clone magic didn’t make him crazy cool enough. Even though I suck at his game and am not especially fond of his raps, the visual of him rapping with this giant monster behind him and dozens of weird shadow wingmen by his side hyping him up was probably one of the coolest in the entire game. The dark way they were hyping him up too gave such a bizarre atmosphere, especially since it parallels his seemingly chill and smiley demeanor.

I definitely hope they’ll introduce new bosses as DLC in the future, and make them sort of in the same vein as DK West, where they aren’t the biggest artists ever, but they want to pick a fight with B2J. I’d kill for any extra content this game can provide.

Yinu is obviously special since she was the subject of the demo they put out for the game. Even though I knew all her bells and whistles, she and her mom still beat me a few times in the full game. Considering she’s semi-tied to story-ish spoilers I kinda want to go more into her in a separate section. It is worth considering playing the game first since it’s not hard (with the easy going deaths) and it’s short length.

1010 seriously grew on me as I learned more about them and interacted with them. I got their shtick when I first looked at them, but after seeing that animation of them touring the city on Youtube I was kinda falling for them. Then, I learned that they’re apparently repurposed navy war robots? I mean, maybe not them specifically, but it seems to heavily point in that direction, with the warship cars and “attention!”s and all. It took me a bit to get into their music too, but once I actually fought them and put their actions to the music I fell in love with it. I swear, Neon J’s weird dancing can has some of the smoothest moves in all of gaming. I don’t know whether they mocapped out those movements or got one of the greatest animators ever, but it looks so impossibly clean his part of the song gets me like 30x more hype than it would normally.

Also, their little art piece of them looking at fan mail in the credits is probably one of the most adorable things ever. Even if they’re just Neon J’s puppets, that piece of art really makes it seem like they love every one of their fans. I’m not gonna lie, I might swoon a bit too if they picked me out and gave me some special attention.

Oh yeah, and the fact that Mayday was super sad in her showstopper against them was adorable and hilarious at the same time. The little tweaks they made to the showstopper for each fight were great.

Eve just has to be Lady Gaga, right? Like, an even crazier Lady Gaga. DJSS is Daft Punk (or any artist with a helmet persona, you know what I’m talking about), Sayu is Hatsune Miku, DK West is Kanye West, Yinu is a generic child protege, 1010 is a KPop boyband (just pick one) and Eve is Lady Gaga. That’s just how things are. But, again, this is the kind of boss fight that only this type of character could provide. It’s not just surreal imagery, it’s ARTISTIC surreal imagery. The fight is so mesmerizing in every way, especially by how it starts off so slow and calm and progresses to insanity, as well as the increased emotional investment in the fight making you feel so much more into it than just “That’s the boy band. Let’s fight.” Not only does it get you more invested, but it makes her artistic persona go deeper than just “she looks weird.” She is genuinely conflicted about her relationship with Zuke, and naturally that leads her to literally split him and Mayday apart. That mechanic specifically was the coolest, although I do wish they made it more obvious when you needed to switch over to a different side. I was getting pulverized by her fight too, since there were so many things to pay attention to. Her fight was definitely the best one.

Tatiana and Spoilers:

Let’s be real with ourselves, the twist was so obvious. I do also think, though, that obvious twists aren’t bad if they’re just good reveals. At some point, a person just has experienced so many stories that “only pretty good” twists are easy to spot. It doesn’t mean that the twists are bad, it just means you yourself experienced.

I feel like her transition from rock to EDM was pretty understandable, even as a non-musician. She was so caught up in what she assumed was popular that it basically consumed her. It’s easy as an artist to want to forgo what you truly want to make in favor of what makes you popular, and clearly since her transition to EDM made her the CEO of the biggest company in the city (world?) that probably made her think she truly needed to change her outlook. Then, when she saw B2J try to bring it back, she sort of coined them as being as misguided as she was and knocked them down a peg. Plus, they were kinda being jerks about it.

It’s kinda like the Trolls sequel, where everyone pegs rock music fanatics as being too stuck up in their own heads to appreciate other types of music, which honestly seems more like the case than the alternative. When I first heard of the story of the game, I was seriously hoping they did put an asterisk on B2J’s ambitions because they were a bit sketchy from the start.

That’s kinda where I want to talk about Yinu, because she was the true turning point in what they were doing. She’s literally 9 and yet she’s getting dragged into all this BS. When she said “I hate you all” at the end of her fight, and played a somber tune on her broken piano after the fight destroyed it, you kinda got a kick in the face to realize you’re kinda being an asshole to some of them. Sure, they fight back, but they wouldn’t fight in the first place if they didn’t have to. They are just people who play music under a joint name that B2J just so happened to get in hot water with.

Then, of course, there’s Kliff, who also reeked of surprise villain, and who’s basically the embodiment of the bad side of B2J, where he just wanted to destroy for his own sake and not for the actual greater good. Once B2J realized their mistake, they backed off, but Kliff was so hard pressed to do what he planned on in the first place he wouldn’t stop. I kinda wish he got a bigger fight to his own since he’s clearly a big enough tech genius to divert a whole satellite into one specific building. Maybe the Elliecopter chase bit was his thing, but I do kind of wish he was there to fight against them too.

Even though Tatiana did kind of reform a bit quick, It’s still not too crazy to assume she could see that B2J was just misguided and the fact that they worked to revert their wrongdoings for her sake would make a pretty strong impressions. They clearly can hold their own, so it’s not like she wouldn’t want them to join NSR too.

Oh yeah, and her boss fight was clock/time themed. If there’s a theme under space that I love, it’s clocks/time.

And If I am to be respected by the internet, I must provide a negative opinion to balance out my positive one. I will say that the character model physics (like Mayday’s braids, DK West’s vest thing, Neon J’s fluffy neck thing, etc) got kinda funky at times. Especially DK West’s vest, which was completely messed up for every scene he was in... Also, even though the voices are mostly great, some lines felt a bit off. Just a bit. That good enough? Good.

But yeah anyway that’s another favorite game to add to the pile. Eventually I’m gonna have to compile a true list of my all-time favorite games/movies because I do kind of want to have a solid idea of what my all-time favorites are.

Masara Kagami - Assassin done wrong - Part 1

I´ve mentioned it before so now I´m going to explain why I think Masara is the epitomy of misused potential for character design in all of Magia Record.

This is part one and will focus on her gameplay. Her visual design will be part two. In terms of character writing and personality I´m actually quite fond of her.

So, lets get going. Disclaimer: I don´t mean to hate on her or people who like her! I really do like her myself which is why I´m upset about how lazy the designers were when it comes to her.

Overview

Rarity: 3*-> 4*

Disks: AAB(<->)CC

Type: Attack

Personal: 100% Chance to Critial hit to self for one turn

Stats: 21.930 HP | 9.295 ATK | 6.963 DEF (SE 100/100)

Connect: Chance to Critical Hit 75%/85%

Magia: Damage One Enemy | Chance to Chase - Self / 1 Turn / 100% | Chance to Evade - Self / 1 Turn / 30%

SE Active: Chance to Critical Hit 35% - Self - 3 Turns

Now lets get going. Masara´s fighting style (ingame and story) is simple. Go in and strike. She is essentially an Assassin. She turns invisible and goes for the backstab. She is a glass canon and her stats reflect that.

But it doesn´t quite work. Now we gotta keep in mind she is not a limited special unit but I feel like even with her being low rarity she was done dirty. Why is that?

Let´s start with her disks. Double A and Double C with one B. This is the disc set of a support/magia type. Masara does get buffs for her charge discs, but how does she use them? Does she contribute to charge combos? No. She isn´t a chargius and doesn´t have tools the likes of Tsukasa (Charge +1) or Hagumu (Charge draw personal) have. Does she use her charges for blasting? Not really. She does have blast up in her SE but only one blast disc. Does her connect support charge? Not really, it is not consistent. Being able to give a charge conservation 20 stack blast combo a crit chance of 85% sounds lethal but it´s not 100%. There´s a saying in the Pokemon fandom that goes: If it isn´t 100% accurate it´s 50% accurate. It´s high risk somewhat high reward and all her connect offers. Most people prefer consistency in connects so they won´t use her for anything other than basic content. The really good synergy is missing.

Maybe she´ll slot well into blasting. Obviously not. Without connect(s) she will never be able to pull of her own puella blast combo. If you really want to slot crit into a blast combo, just use Yachiyo. Her crit chance might be lower at 70% but the blast up is guaranteed. Plus she can reach 5 stars, something Masara can not do yet.

Since Masara can´t use her charge disks for blasting she can use them to boost her own mp gain, right? Yes! Buuuut...

She gets no sources of AC or MP gain up pre 100. This will slow her down. But she can get there. Once she does, what does she do?

She will destroy a single unit. Her attack is rather high for a capped four star and with the buff to single target magias she can even oneshot challenge bosses. But does her magia benefit her team? Not at all.

She gets a 30% chance to evade which is just her passive evade chance times two. Why. Whhhhyyy. She can turn invisible! Her evade should be 1000%. Tsuruno and Oriko can evade 100%, but the invisible assassin can´t. But maybe thats because the other effects are so broken? Nice one. It´s chase 100% for herself for one turn. Now here´s the problem with that. It´s useless if you use three magias in one turn. It´s also bad if you only use her magia and two discs cause you won´t maximize the damage. If it would last for two turns you could chase on a puella combo. But that´s a luxury she wasn´t given. What her magia should do is provide Defense pierce. Assassins literally exist to bypass defenses. Either 100% to self or like 50% to her team. It would be good but nowhere near too broken for a free character. But you know who else is free to play, light type and can oneshot single target enemies. Shizuku. Her magia, being random targets, will outdamage single target magias. She is also uncapped and her Magia gives crit to her team for three turns. Thats more than Masara does. She also gives herself Attack up for three turns. Masara doesn´t do that either. So if you need a strong single target light magia, pick Shizuku (who also gets more mp and has evade as an SE active which makes her more reliable).

Now, Masara is still capped and once she can reach 5 stars her stats will surpass Shizuku´s. But who knows when that will happen.

Lets summarize: She gives herself bad evade and mediocre chase. She gives others a very high crit chance but nothing else. By the way her chrit chance is bad on magia teams who don´t care about disc damage. Her SE gives her a mediocre crit chance for three turns and her personal gives her 100% crit for one turn. Her magia is outclassed by Shizuku´s who does more for herself and her team. She has no niche to fill in this game other than brr connect almost 100% crit but not quite brrr

Masara´s only source of defense pierce is a low chance from SE. Defense pierce should be her gimmick and her evade should be 100%. You can´t get more invisible assassin than this. This would make her unique but still balanced around being free to play. Her connect should be 100% crit chance PLUS another effect. Get creative and pick your poison. Ingore Dmg cut / Anti-Evade/ Evade/ Defense pierce/ Damage up whatever.

I know that she might get new abilities once she gets uncapped but I´m not very optimistic. She is not a teamplayer and thats okay. But her not living up to her assassin theme is such a shame. The only thing 100% about her kit is chase which is a fun mechanic but no saving grace. Everything that makes her lethal in concept is weak in execution.

So that wraps up everything wrong with Masara´s gameplay as an Assassin. Also let her throw knives from behind her enemies that would be so cool.

Nuzlocke Shield Part Six

Part Five

After a bit of training to get everyone up to the same level, and hitting up the move Re-learner, I went back to Route 9 to explore and fight trainers. Everything was going well, until a Cloyster managed to get a lucky 5 hits with Icicle Spear and knocked out Ddraig. Blast it.

Ddraig is KO'd

With Ddraig out for the count, I rely on Chamomile before going back to Spikemuth and sneaking in.

I take Spritz out of storage and evolve him into a Vikavolt. He does have a good SAk boosting nature, so there is room for him to work out well. I don’t have much in terms of Dark beating Pokemon, so I lead with Bullseye to fight Marnie and pray for the best.

The battle animation for Mudsdale using Body Press is one of the worst. It spins around, kicks out it’s back legs then flies up and lands on the enemy Pokemon with its back legs still kicked out. Looks absolutely ridiculous. Still knocks out Leipard in one shot, so I can’t complain.

Bullseye's Stamina kicks in with a Crunch from Scrafty which means Body Press will do more damage. Two hits take out Scrafty.

Toxic rock gets a Sucker Punch in first, more Stamina for me, but swallows an earthquake whole and suffers for it.

Morpeko starts with Torment, which technically should have stopped me using Earthquake (as I’d just used it) but it doesn’t stop me one shooting the little Pikachu knock off.

Ah Spikemuth, the poor man's Po Town. I get that Team Yell are just meant to be over eager fans, but the whole city on lock down just doesn’t cut it. They are officially the worst 'team' and really don’t deserve any kind of promotion. Any other team would have kidnapped Gym Challengers by now.

Team Yell always come out in pairs, and this game really dropped the ball on having more double battles. A handful of trainer battles here and there, one here in Spikemuth and Raihan's Gym and that's it. I love Double Battles (and Hoard Battles and Rotation Battles but let’s not open up old wounds) I want more.

Ok, I might love Double Battles but obviously my lack of doing them often enough has rendered me incapable of doing them properly.

I swap out Chamomile for Pina Colada so Bullseye can Earthquake and hit both Pokemon, with the grass type tanking the hit. I don’t take into consideration a Poison Fang from Draipion which leaves Pina hanging on with a mere 10HP. Luckily, Bullseye knocks the other two out, but that could have been a disaster again.

Time to heal up and use the first Ether of the game to give Bullseye enough PP to spam Body Press for the battle with Piers.

A single Sand Attack from Scrafty has had me miss more than I’d have liked, and Malamar did some hefty damage with various attacks, but they both fell. I heal up and let Obstagoon have a first hit, which is then followed its Obstruct. Thanks to Bullseye's Stamina having maxes out my defence, the harsh drop doesn’t do much, and Body Press knocks out Obstagoon in one hit.

Skuntank leads with Toxic, Earthquake leaves it on a silver of HP, but it doesn’t do enough damage to me again and falls the next turn.

Dark Badge get!

Oh you want me to come help with a disaster on Route 9? I'd love to.

Oh never mind, Leon is here. I guess I’ll back inside then.

Considering the big deal they made at the start of the game about Leon being unable to find his way around, he does a great job of immediately running in the direction he's meant to go in. It would have been hilarious if he ran off down the wrong way, then stopped and doubled back. Having said that..

When a game that tells you “wild Pokemon started dynamaxing all over the place” but fails to show it is such a cop out. Ruby and Sapphire making it sunny or raining everywhere on the map was a far more effective way of showing the disaster taking place than just a couple of characters running around talking about it. They couldn’t even manage an actual “Ka-BOOM” and had to put it in a text box. Such a disappointment.

Speaking of characters talking about it, Hop is hanging around on the outskirts of Route 7. Yep, more talking about wild dynamaxing Pokemon. Thrilling.

Route 7 I’ve already done the encounter, so let's just shoot back to Hammerlocke with a quick trainer battle on the way.

Bullseye is the first of my team to reach level 50.

I have done a lot of cycling around, picking up items, selling and buying potions and heals and levelling up Spritz. Now everyone is at level 50 and I'm going to face Raihan.

As I said about double battles before, I remember that Raihan's gym rookies are all weather based battles. For the Rain Dance battle I’ll use Spritz and Pina Colada, as the latter's Swim Swim will come into play. Pelipper eats a Thunderbolt, Sligoo falls to a Bug Buzz and Energy Ball combo. Next!

Otis should do well in the next Sunny Day battle as he has Flash Fire, and Bullseye can do some heavy damage even without using Earthquake.

Turtonator's Shell Trap is a little tricky, and Bullseye got burned on the first turn. I focus on knocking out Ninetales so I can get both pokemon to attack the Turt'. It's going to spam Shell Trap which is hurting Bullseye but that just means Stamina is going to keep boosting Body Press' damage, so the battle is over before I need to use more potions.

Last up, Hail. Otis is out again along with Cyanide. Cyanide's Quick Draw lets it go first and it knocks Hakamo-o out with a single Psychic. I forgot it was a fighting dragon, so that was a spot of luck on my part. Otis' Fire Lash has the desired and expected effect on a x4 weak Pokemon. Raihan is up next.

It's cool that the Hammerlocke Stadium isn't a standard stadium like all the others and is obviously the castle, but having the battle take place in the same area as all the others is disappointing. I would have loved to see more themed Gyms rather than repeats of the same thing every time. This is why long time pokemon fans were so disappointed with Sword and Shield.

I heal up and swap my team around a little, this match might be difficult. I'm leading with Bullseye and Cyanide. No Quick Draw to start but Stamina lets Body Press do half damage to Gigalith and Icy Wind from Cyanide levels the HP of Flygon down to the same as Gig.

A Crunch from Flygon hurts Cyanide, but he takes it. Another Body Press gets rid of Gigalith and Icy Wind knocks out Flygon. So far so good.

With Raihan brining both Pokemon out at the same time and Gigantamaxing Duraldon straight away, I Dmax Bullseye and swap Cyanide out for Pina Colada. Hopefully Pina can tank any ground attacks. Max Duraldon uses Max Quake in Pina and takes out a third of his HP, and Sandaconda attacks it too, but it stays alive with only 12HP! I heal Pina and continue to attack Duraldon with Max Quakes and Knuckles. Duraldon is tough, it is tanking these attacks.

Ok, GMax Depletion looks amazing, I have no idea what it's done though. Pina has been untargetted so knocks out Sandaconda with a single Energy Ball. The Dynamaxing will be over both both sides after this turn so I can focus all my attacks on Duraldon. Another Energy Ball and Body Press finally knocks it out.

The clones and videogames.

So there is a lot here! More under the keep reading cut! :)

· Fives; He is pretty dam good at them. He has spent far too many hours gaming. On shore leave it’s all he does. Plays video games in his underwear for a minimum of 6 hours a day whilst on shore leave. Please don’t challenge him you will lose. He’s the type of person that has memorised Mortal Kombat finishers, looks at you whilst punching the combo in before smirking and muttering the word “Fatality” and watching the life drain from Echo’s eyes as he realises, Fives has just beaten him for the 40th time today. He’s really good at them, possibly the best in the 501st at any game. Doesn’t matter if it’s a first a person shooter, a fighting or a RPG he’s great at it. He loves Mortal Kombat, it’s his go to game. Rex comments on how he’s confused at how Fives can gracefully and quickly enter a combo but cannot gracefully throw a punch.

· Echo; He likes video games, wouldn’t say he was into them as much as Fives but he likes them. They keep him occupied and he does like to be kept busy. He isn’t as good as them as Fives but can easily beat Rex and Kix at something like Tekken. He’s really bad at online Shooters like Halo and Call of Duty. He’s good in war but he’s terrible at shooters online. He does like his RPGS, Dragon Quest definitely is his jam. Sentinel of the starry skies is probably one of his favourite games of all times. It’s old he knows but he could still sit and play it till 3 in the morning. He’s really into Witcher and Skyrim, really long-winded games that have a lot of lore and a lot of story. He’s such a whore for lore and story in games. Him and Fives can get really competitive. It usually ends with Echo regretting getting competitive as Fives can and will beat him. The one time Echo beat Fives was at Soul Calibur by button mashing and when Fives was playing as Voldo.

· Hardcase; He loses the spur to carry on playing, his attention span will not let him play a long-winded game, unless the story is really good he’s not invested and will get really bored easily. He’s okay at multiplayer games, but he really isn’t the best. He likes games with colour and excitement that are fast paced. He is a pro at Mario Kart, but only on Rainbow road? Like everyone else is falling off the map but he’s like beating everyone. He’ll only play after a few drinks or when everyone else is playing. He once let go of a pad and it hit Echo in the face. He said he was sorry but he still laughed. Also, he can actually use Voldo on Soul Calibur really well, like everyone is confused but he just seems to be able to use him.

· Jesse; He sucks at video games but he is a pro at one thing. Trolling. He’s a troll on multiplayer games and online. Once when on Monster Hunter, he shot a health ammo at a Jho and healed it because he thought it would be HILARIOUS. Echo’s eye twitched, Kix wanted to cry and Fives was heard screaming from the living room. He and Hardcase eventually just try to outdo each other on the annoying front. He sucks at them and instead opts to just be a massive pain in the arse. It starts off funny but then just ends up annoying Fives. He’s a camper. He lives to be irritating to make up for his lack of skill.

· Kix; He never takes a day off from being a medic. This guy is a healer. On something like Overwatch he’s a Mercy main… when he’s on a team of ungratefuls who spam “I need healing” when they don’t or just don’t stay on the Payload and then complain that he didn’t heal them when they were on the other end of the map; he’ll switch to Moira and become a salty piece of shit. He’ll just mutter under his breath “Oh you need healing? Well tough shit should have stopped me from dying last round” SALTY. Echo and Fives always upvote him… not because of skill, but because if they don’t he’ll be even pettier next match.

· Rex; He says he doesn’t have time and doesn’t like to play them. But secretly he loves playing them. He wouldn’t do it often by himself but with the others he gets really into it. He always aims to get on Five’s team. Why? Because Rex is competitive AF and doesn’t like to lose and Fives happens to be a king. He can’t drive so he sucks at Mario Kart but laughs about it. Usually plays it when a lil drunk so that explains why he’s laughing at losing. He once invited around members of Ghost and the Generals and they all got SLAUGHTERED. They put Hardcase (Who is the worst at it) on Dark souls and played the drinking game of it. Had to stop after 10 minutes. Rex is actually really good at Halo. Fives and he annihilate everyone else in it. Not graceful winners at all. Will rub it in your face.

· Tup; Yeah, he doesn’t really like Videogames. He does play the Sims though. Why? Because a man needs a hobby, and if he wants to build extravagant houses he knows he’ll deffo not own after the war he can do! He made a house with Torrent in it. Fives was so happy with how his character looked… Tup accidentally killed him by letting him eat from the Jelly Bean tree… so now he’s just a ghost haunting everyone with his presence and keeping everyone awake at night by screaming. He’s still not told Fives and insists he’s away on dates and that’s why he’s not in the house. He’s actually envious his sim just gets to draw all day and gets paid for it. Lucky bastard.

· Cody; He doesn’t do videogames. Except strategy games, stuff like Command and Conquer. He doesn’t let Kenobi know he plays them. Claims he’s working on strategies… which he sort of is. He’s really good at the Soul series and Bloodborne. Like he’s exceptionally good at them. He dies the least on them out of everybody. Watching him go through the game is like watching Bambi on a minefield. He garners quiet a crowd when playing it. Drinks are promised if he can beat Ornstein and Smough without dying. He tells Rex to make it a double before landing the finishing blow.

· Wolffe; He hates playing videogames and finds them a waste of time… he’s just saying that because he sucks at them and that’s his cover. He doesn’t like losing and doesn’t want to risk losing to a shiny. He just doesn’t understand the appeal to them. He does play a little bit of a Skyrim though now and again. He totally did the companion quest line first and is totally still a werewolf. When the Wolf pack started playing Pokemon go his face was just a constant unimpressed glare. “Are you taking a photo of me?” “No there’s just a Haunter near you” He has no idea what that is and actually turns to see what’s near him. He just doesn’t understand. In a Games tournament to decide which Battalion is the best and a pointless and waste of time skill, he’d go with Sinker to try and save their pride… Fives is the reigning champion.

Pokemon Card of the Day Schedule: Lost Thunder

The Lost Thunder set had a theme around both Lightning-types and the return of the Lost Zone mechanic, somewhere that cards would be sent and couldn't be recovered from for the rest of the game. While the Lost Zone was already seen a bit in Ultra Prism due to the Prism Star mechanic, there were now more cards, like Jumpluff, that actually made use of it in this set, though they didn't go all-in on the mechanic again for a few more years. Said Lost Zone mechanic did bring the Lost March deck with Jumpluff, Trumbeak, and Natu, which was like Night March but harder to use.

The Lightning side of the set had Mareep, which had small uses for stall decks, Zebstrika to draw through a deck quickly, and Zeraora-GX to help Lightning decks with retreat costs. A Stadium, Thunder Mountain Prism Star, made it easier for Lightning-types to attack, which was very useful after a future set was released. Electropower would turn out to be a huge deal, giving easy damage boosts to later, extremely strong Pokemon.

Outside of the themes, there was a decent bit to take in. Grass got a shockingly high amount to work with, though it never came together to give it anything top tier. Still, Sceptile-GX, Shuckle-GX, Meganium, and Life Forest Prism Star had their uses. Fire had Magcargo-GX for mill decks and Blacephalon-GX for big attacks, while getting a nice Stadium in Heat Factory Prism Star. Other interesting Pokemon included a few Unown cards with weird win conditions, a Giratina that placed damage counters when coming into play, a Naganadel that accelerated to itself (and could help certain attackers with the right combos), a new take on Alolan Ninetales-GX, and surprisingly enough, an Onix card that had a niche. Yes, really. Oh, and Ditto Prism Star was able to evolve into anything and some decks liked that a lot.

There were a few extra Trainers with noting, such as four new Fairy Charm cards to block certain types, Counter Gain to help a bit in coming back from behind, and Custom Catcher, which let you use a gusting effect without using a Supporter... if you played two. Faba, Professor Elm's Lecture, Spell Tag, and Wait and See Hammer also had spots in specific decks. Overall, a pretty good set, and one where the biggest impact took a little while to be seen.
