The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood
This novel has been on my shelves for years, it's been on my tbr ever since I had heard someone talk about it fo the first time, but then I never actually picked the book up. I am not going to lie I was intimidated by it. The topics I knew it was going to deal with are important, and I was scared the writing was going to be super elaborated and I generally felt like I wasn't going to be smart enough for it. No idea where that came from, and now I am damning my past self for reading this sooner. I have spent these past months looking for a good horror book that would scare me and I wouldn't have failed as miserably if I had picked up this dystopic novel sooner. In fact I can say that this book was terrifying, and I am going to convice as many people as possible to read it.
The story takes place in a dystopic not so far in the future USA, where a strictly religious regime has taken really questionable solutions to the problems of very low fertility. Toxic stuff has made people infertile and the solution was to take everything from women and forcing those who can still have children to be send around the homes of richer people to attempt having kids. This is potentially the worse plot explanation I did, but now you have an idea. This book deals with so much, it depicts an obsessive religios society founded on misoginy and a full lack of humanity, and the scariest part is that this seems realistic and plausable. It is something that could happen, it's not one of those dystopic worlds started by a zombie apocalyps or by an alien invasion, it could be very easly turn into reality, and it's really really scary. I urge you to read it whether you identify as a woman or not, whether you have a uterus or not, read this novel. It should be required reading. It will make you angry, it will scare you, but that is the job of a well crafted dystopia, it should make you aware of some of the worse possible outcomes of the society we live it. This books is as relevent as when it was firstly published, and it's really approachable. I have no idea why I was intimidated by it, it's amazingly written. It's simple, it keeps you glued to the pages, and it's really easy to follow between what happened in the past and what is happening in its present. I particularly appreciated the fact we can see the point of view of someone who had a normal life in the world before this regime took place, and they are now trapped in this dystopic society. Having a main character that had both experiences made the narration incredibly rich, and I loved every page of it. As I said I really recommend reading this book whoever you are, it's worth it and it's incredibly important, if I could turn back I'd read it sooner, and chances are I will reread it multiple times in the future.

Yeonmi Park's Stories from Childhood and Escape from North Koriea conjure up images from another world such as Narnia.
"I was born in North Korea and I did Escape when I was 13 years old. I did have one older sister and I had two loving parents, but in North Korea, there's no word for love, so my parents never told me that they loved me.
The first thing, my mom told me when I was younger was don't even whisper because the birds and mice could hear you. We never knew who was a spy, how they were watching."

Round 1, Side A, Poll 8
Tumblr media
Rebekah Jakobs-Hammerlock ( @wainwrightjakobshammerlock ) VS. Sawyer Hale ( @thewikiplayer )
-------
( art by wainwrightjakobshammerlock )
What is your baby's name? Pronouns?: Rebekah Jakobs-Hammerlock, she/her
Is your baby from a fandom or original?: Fandom - the Borderlands game series
How old is your baby?: 5 in my post canon alternate universe (7-8 years after Borderlands 3)
Tell us about your baby!: She's the testtube biological baby of Sir Hammerlock & Wainwright Jakobs (which basically means she could aim and shoot a pistol at the age of 4) and has 4 siblings (one of which is also an oc, but is an adoptive kid, and the rest are canon characters who got adopted). She has a big plushie collection (some knitted or sewn by Wainwright, some crocheted by Hammerlock, some being gifts from extended family or the Crimson raiders) and also fucked up eldritch powers beyond human comprehension bc her parents are abominations from beyond the veil (my Borderlands rewrite AU is a mess haha) which she primarily uses to teleport all over the house, causing an understandable amount of problems. Clay is her weird uncle and she loves him. She's kinda based off Wednesday Addams because autism. Also she is autistic, the nicest weirdgirl on Eden-6, swears an unusual amount for a 5 year old (being around Wainwright del Frisco Jakobs-Hammerlock will do that to you) and often swaps between her Edenian (space southern) and her Hermesian (space british) accents bc yknow. Just listen to her dads speak and you'll see.
Anything else you want to add?: (1) Most people call her Reb for short but Wainwright calls her Rebby because yes. (2) She eventually grows to inherit the Jakobs corporation and generally sorta girlbossify but that's extreme future timeskip stuff I don't talk abt often because I feel cringe about it. (3) Her name continues on the general theme of Jakobs related things having biblical symbolism - Rebekah is Jacob's mother in the book of Genesis (if i remember correctly). (3) Her voiceclaim is Lili Zanotto from Psychonauts :D (4) She calls Hammerlock "Papa" and Wainwright "Daddy"
----
( art by thewikiplayer )
What is your baby's name? Pronouns?: sawyer hale, he/they/xe
Is your baby from a fandom or original?: completely original!! the universe name is "turnabout tech"
How old is your baby?: 16!!
Tell us about your baby!: [MOD NOTE: TW for father death]
sawyer hale is a kid who had a pretty hard knock life in a cyberpunk dystopia city. after deciding his dad kinda sucked, sawyer ran away and emancipated himself at 16 and moved into a different, nicer city and became a hermit for a while. afterwards, he proceeded to save the world twice; once he saved a cyberworld from the big bad capitalists and second he saved the universe from collapsing via terrible creature. as he goes through these adventures he learns how to be comfortable and happy with himself again.
also he destroyed his dad when he possessed a robot body. go kid!!
sawyer super loves tech but he gave it up for a while because Shitty Dad Ruining It For Him, but he eventually finds his passion again and makes phenomenal inventions. also he is the embodiment of Baby because all the adults around him want to scoop him up and carry him around for being a little issues boy with issues. they love singing and the arts in general, and they're very open-minded, which makes them a pretty good friend.
oh yeah all his adventures kinda messed up his biology so he's partially made of code now. and also has wings made of code. he can design them however he wants like retexturing game assets. YIPPIE!
Anything else you want to add?: I'M SO SORRY FOR THE PARAGRAPH. GODSPEED

They deserve to go feral, as a treat
I was inspired
Someone asked who of the kids are most likely to go bad in the wake of Jimmy-boys villain arc, and 5/7 of em could very much go bad if they tried, and I gave all of them reasons as to why and how they would be evil
So here’s the evil guys
Also all of these exist in separate universes from each other, we don’t have five supervillains running amok at the same time lol
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Watcher Liana
Liana has the watcher gene who most commonly in the fandom is depicted as not very nice guys, plus the hurt and betrayal of her dads would leave her impressionable to their words
Power: Clairvoyance, pupeteering, mind control, space warping
Status of the world: Hermitcraft, Empires, and the death servers have all been combined through a multitude of rifts. Hardcore rules, and some people are under her influence and out for blood
Weakness: Can be subdued if wearing the blindfold
Victims: Grian, BigB, Jimmy, Pearl, Martyn, Gertrude
Danger level: Severe
Tumblr media
Wes of the under
Wes would be a villain who like, wouldn’t see himself as bad. Wes is a protector, and he’s also naturally anxious and fearful, so he’d do anything to protect the people he loves, even if it means hurting others.
Powers: Durability, Teleportation, Invisibility, Fire Immunity, Imp scouts
Status of the world: People avoid going underground and entering caves like the plague. The underground is a complicated tunnel system, a maze to anyone that isn’t apart of the imp hive mind. All of the kids, and some hermits and emperors, are missing
Weakness: Doesn’t kill, and will do anything to stop himself from doing so
Victims: None
Danger level: Medium, can be reasoned with
Tumblr media
Princess Gertrude
Gertrude has also been hurt deeply, by both of her dads. She’d want control over her own life, and the best way to do that is to take ultimate control. Her dad has gone evil king twice, and she is a fairytale fanatic. What’s stopping her from going evil princess?
Power: Werewolf transformation, wolf army, influence over many powerful hermits, redstone skills
Status of the world: A dystopia with her at the top. Taxes are high, as is the threat of death. She has access to both X’s and fWhip’s admin controls, so she rules the world with her iron paw, and is quick to crush any rebellion
Weakness: Silver coated arrows
Victims: Grian, Xisuma, fWhip, Scar, Impulse, Pearl, Gem, Mumbo, Beef, Wels, Iskall, Katherine, Pixl, Joel, Liana, Wes
Danger level: Medium of alone. Very high if with her wolf army, or in her werewolf form
Tumblr media
Jekiv the undead
Jekiv is a literal necromancer zombie without a soul, and little care for most people, with heavy daddy issues. The only thing actually keeping him from going villain is that Cleo raised him well
Powers: Full control of an undead army, dark magic, able to dismember and reattach his limbs
Status of the world: Zombie apocalypse dystopia. Zombies and Skeletons are immune to the sunlight, so they roam the overworld killing anything and all that they can. Most people have moved into isolated bunkers.
Weakness: Physically vulnerable. Able to be overpowered if you get his scythe away from him
Victims: Every other witch, including Shubble
Danger level: High
Tumblr media
Novo, lord of ice
Novo is a Jinx. He’s already dealing with a lot of mental damage, so all it would take was something to make him snap and he’d loose it entirely, hurting people without even realizing it.
Powers: Freezing Water, freezing objects, creating Ice and Snow from nothing, giving life to snow and or ice, telekinetic manipulation of frozen water, creating an eternal winter
Status of the world: A frozen wasteland stuck in an eternal winter. Polar bears and strays roam freely, attacking on sight. People stay in underground grottos and homes, trying to preserve any warmth they can.
Weakness: Fire
Victims: Gertrude, Liana, Doc, Jevin, Xb, Cleo, Cub, Wels, Gem, Sausage, Katherine
Danger level: High, might accidentally kill you
Minor notes: The thing that made Novo snap was accidentally Killing Gertrude, a la Elsa style. His cloak, the only thing that’s not completely frozen, was hers. Jekiv and Gertrude are villains less because of something that happened, and more of they were raised differently. Liana is because of manipulation by the watchers, and idk with Wes.
Also shout out to Jassy and Johnny, who not only avoided going bad, but also remained alive in all five realities. Gg

for the wip ask game,,,,,i'm temped to ask about the cursed prince, but whisper is calling to me 👀 i am intrigued
Hfhfhg I don’t think it’ll be what you expected
Whisper is a cyberpunk, dystopia novel I started a few years ago. It’s about a world (or more like a giant city) where everyone is registered and connected to an online monitoring thingy. There’s a rebel faction who are fighting for freedom from a government that has pretty much become a dictatorship
Which brings us to “whisper”. It’s a weapon the rebels made that will allow its wielder to override the super computer that keeps the population connected so that they can free everyone . The problem is that it accidentally ends up being implanted into Lorna, the worst heroine ever
Lorna is a selfish, disaster hermit lady who has mild social anxiety and a bad temper. Her only friend, and roommate, is a sarcastic, pretty useless robot (self-named) Chuck. They share one brain cell and always argue
Anyway, the rebels come looking for Lorna, as they need to use whisper fast. a deadly disease is spreading in the slums. government is simply going to kill everyone/destroy the infected areas to stop it from spreading any further. There is a cure but only a small amount has been made and pretty much only the rich can get to it
So yeah. That’s the basic gist of it. It’s actually a chaotic comedy featuring a lot of idiots, some found family, working through trauma (of course), and maaaayyybe some romance. That’s a big maybe.
I’d share an excerpt but I’m not on my computer lol

1, 12, & 13 for the book asks!
hello!
1.book you have read the most times
I answered this question here!
12.did you enjoy any compulsory high school readings?
I am morally against compulsory readings, they are the very reason I used to despise reading as a kid. I did study amazing pieces of litterature in school, but the books I was forced to read were never really part of the program and they were often questionable. The only compulsory readings I enjoyed were those my former Italian teacher gave us in high school, because understanding how reading works, this teacher didn't impose one single book to everyone. She would give a theme say dystopia, science fiction, a book about travelling. You would tell her I am thinking about this or that and she would tell you if the book you picked was okay and then we were tested orally to make sure we actually had read the book. This way we all got to read stuff we actually enjoyed. I got to read the lord of the rings for school in my summer break and write an essay about it, it was great. Then of course we changed teacher and things went down hill. Sorry for the rant
13.do you have a goodreads?
I do, you can find me as cris the---hermit there as well, there's definitely the link going around on my blog if you look for it. I have stopped accepting friends requests on both goodreads and thestorygraph tho. Things started to get a bit overwhelming and I wasn't enjoying my time there anymore. But you can still check out what I am reading if you are interested (I definitely update my storygraph more often, but at the end of the day I am pretty consistent in marking as currently reading and read).
send me a bookish ask!!

‘The Long Walk’ Review: A Ghostly Future in Laos
This Laotian drama from Mattie Do presents a world where spirits linger on into a future that has been shaped by technology.
By Teo Bugbee March 2, 2022
The Laotian drama The Long Walk takes a languid look around a near-future dystopia where fighter jets leave smoke trails in the sky and government authorities track missing people using microchips embedded in their bodies. In this reality, a spiritual, occult world exists underneath the noses of officials.
The movie follows an unnamed protagonist (Yannawoutthi Chanthalungsy), an isolated older man known by the people in his town as someone who can communicate with the dead and find people who have gone missing.
But what the medium’s clients don’t know is that he also helps women who are sick and desperate for relief from life’s hardships facilitate their own deaths. When a young woman (Vilouna Phetmany) seeks him out for guidance in finding her missing mother, she doesn’t know that the body he leads her to is one he buried himself.
The hermit travels along the road connecting life and death, accompanied by ghosts and in possession of powers that allow him to visit and potentially alter his own past. Yet despite the high concepts that drive the film’s story, its writer and director, Mattie Do, does not overburden the movie with exposition or explanations.
She sets a leisurely pace, pausing to watch how the humid air interacts with the smoke from the shaman’s vape pen. The atmosphere here is dense with textural detail and requires patience to sift through the layers of meaning that are packed into each frame. The reward for waiting for the fog to lift is a movie that presents a unique take on science fiction, one that looks for the ghosts that linger on in a world that has been shaped by technology.
The Long Walk:
Director: Mattie Do Writer: Christopher Larsen Stars: Yannawoutthi Chanthalungsy, Vilouna Phetmany, Por Silatsa, Noutnapha Soydara, Chanthamone Inoudome Running Time: 1h 56m Genres: Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi

Cyberpunk life series/hermitcraft/probably empires idk au. Watchers are a militant force, policing a capitalist dystopia. People can sell their children, that’s how most watchers are trained/created. Most magical aspects are translated into tech.
Grian is a watcher who was recruited (kidnapped but they won’t tell you that) much later than the others, right out of highschool. (His parents sold him for petty cash once he stopped sending them money he earned from his probably-not-legal-working-conditions.) He’s assigned to mayoral prospect Scar after his kidnapping and subsequent ransom, where he begins to regain his humanity.
Scar is an upperclassman, an intensely opportunistic capitalist and kinda-sorta actually a scammer. He’s kidnapped by a group of people (the hermits) where he gets to witness first hand how his actions and business practices harm the people “below” him. He returns to high society eventually and runs for mayor while secretly funding the hermits & friends.
Ren is leader of the Red Winter, a gang that is fiercely protective of its members but subject to the need for funds and lean morally gray in how they acquire those funds. Ren’s power hungry attitude causes a lot of contention among the hermits, though eventually he mellows out, recognizing the similarities his actions had to the reigning government and better understanding the responsibilities and leverage the hermits hold on a widespread political scale, and how much good they could do. Martyn is Ren’s right hand man during the reign of the red king. A previous member of the Listeners, a group very similar to the Watchers in all but intentions. Martyn left after seeing the harm they perpetuated, especially among their own ranks. He found new purpose in the Red Winter and was the one to convince Ren to join the hermits & co on their quest to remake society.
Mumbo was just guy trying to get by in his low status R&D job at Convex. One day, while covering extra late shifts, he overheard head scientist Cub and the CEO discussing plans to fund and arm a deestablishment group. Too curious for his own good he snoops around the head scientist’s computer, uncovering several unfinished blueprints. Determined to join the movement and prove his worth he finished/improved the blueprints he technically stole and approaches Cub. Mumbo is quickly assimilated into the hermits & co and is promoted to Scar’s assistant, keeping Scar updated and translating “science speak” while continuing to work on security and defense projects for the hermits.
I have more, a lot more, but this is already a very long post so this is it for now. I’ll probably make a part two at some point. Please note that neither the amount I wrote nor the order in which I wrote indicate the favorable status of any character.

Okay, how would you take action on the state of this divided island [Cyprus]?
Karl: Connect to people and try to organize a social media movement to unite the island.
Runo: Individuals, especially the youth, should focus on helping with the missing persons committee work. More than that, the power of youth is needed.
Casimir: Writing letters to higher offices as a form of pressure, perhaps.
Ilmarinen: Legal work would be great, especially if we have lots of lawyers on our side.
G. H. Juuti: Historical analysis to propose a proper way to unite and form a new government. Also, we need to stop the blame on civilian communities and explain the horrors of gangs of both sides with evidence.
Val Pax: Terrorize the politicians, baby. Swarm their houses with letters n shit.
Antti: I don't think things can be fixed unless the people who has been through shit all get old and die. Afterwards, the new generation will be ignorant and repeat the mistakes. Deep state is on us.
Hermit: Focus on the shared culture and the importance of serenity. Forgive.
Placidus: I want to wreak havoc lol. Idk burn down a politician's house or some shit tbh. Or spray paint bilingual swearwords on the border. Mfs can't get us if we're like 100 people loool.
Placida: Disturb the peacekeeping dorces with loud ass metal musşc every single fucking day. Also block the entrances to the parliaments of both sides. Easy. Get a few hundred people to just stand there. Until they take action. Good?
Placidum: You tell me not to offer violent stuff? Sorry, no other suggestions. Jen-Paul Marat once talked about the peace that would happen if five to six hundred heads would be chopped off.
Sanity: Absurdity of the situation is too much. Everyone died and everyone killed. If you blame everyone, you can't fix things.
Paul: I'll offer a different approach. Power of fiction. Why don't we all write dystopias and stuff, even mocking shaggy dog stories that just tell how messed up the situation is? It should make an impact. Also a cultural plus.

Exodus- Part 1
An Edolas Hermit AU story.
Impulse has become public enemy no. 1 in Hermitland. Making the impossible escape from General Xisuma and his cohorts Doc and Cub, Impulse and his friends need to do the impossible- escape Hermitland, beyond the walled city. Where will they end up? Who will make it?
How does Impulse become Edolas Impulse?
--------------------------------
I didn’t intend to make an 8 part story of how Impulse found his way to Edolas, how he came to become a part of the guild, but Red’s story is just too good to not tell it all! I’m very proud of this story, I hope you guys love it as well.
Warning: This story includes general dark elements and language
“It’s only a matter of time before they find you, Impulse.” Tango whispers, watching as Zed presses the last of their medical cream against Impulse’s bruised neck. Impulse flinches at each touch, even though he knows he has no reason to.
Impulse knows these are his friends. They saved his life, cut him free and fled through the underground tunnels together. But it hurts either way, and any sort of pressure around his neck makes his throat close up all over again, and the tears well at the corners of his eyes. A whisper in the back of his mind says this isn’t real, that he isn’t really alive. He’s still on the noose, and his mind is playing tricks with what he sees, the time he feels passing. Or that he's still in the rehab center, hallucinating it all after the effects of the shots that are forced into his veins.
He has to quiet that voice, remind himself that it is real. His friends really did save him from the gallows. It’s been a week since they made their great escape, into the long forgotten tunnels of Hermitland. Tango and Zed only took short trips to the city above, just to get food from safehouses littered across the place. Impulse was public enemy number one, he wouldn’t be able to show his face above ground. Not unless he wanted to get captured again.
In the week that he’s been hiding below ground, the red marks around his neck have turned into horrible black bruises. In a fractured mirror salvaged from an abandoned house, he can see where the noose constricted against his throat. It aches at all hours of the day, and in any reflection, he has to pause to look at the mottled skin. When he gulps, or eats, it stings like someone just struck him in his trachea. He struggles to sleep at night, both from the pain in his neck as well as the nightmares that haunt his dreams.
“We need to leave.” Impulse breathes out, once Zed’s fingers are away from his neck. “We need to get out of Hermitland.”
“Where will we go?” Zed questions, bouncing in his shoes at the thought of leaving. Excitement glitters in his eyes, the closest thing to sunshine Impulse has seen all week.
“Anywhere we want. We’ll be free, we don’t have to listen to anyone. We can go anywhere, do anything.” Impulse sees Tango sit up, determination and hope filling tired eyes.
“Do you really think we’ll be able to make it out there? How do we know what’s on the other side of the wall?” Tango wrings his hands, unable to not be skeptical about such idealistic beliefs.
“We’ve made it here for this long. Survived all the city had to throw at us, survived living off the grid down here. We’re three smart dudes, we’ll figure it out.” Impulse runs a hand through his hair. They have different skills, different pasts. Impulse knows how to make things last, when he doesn’t know what the future will hold. Zed sees uses for things no one else would think to make use of. And Tango has years and years of private schooling and work in the underground to understand what they’re dealing with.
“We should leave sooner rather than later.” Tango concedes, a wispy smile starting to appear on his face. They’re really going to escape. “It’s only a matter of time before they find us.”
“Let’s leave now!” Zed tosses the empty medicine tin over his shoulder, scrambling to his feet.
Tango grabs Zed by the tail of the white button up shirt they all wear. “We need supplies if we’re going to leave. Food, water, tools.”
“I know that my family has some stone tools at our house.” Zed offers. “And we can get food as well. Pack up what we want to take with us.”
“Can I come up with you guys?” Impulse wants to go to his apartment. Get his own things, his own clothes. Maybe even say goodbye to his family. He hasn’t been home in so long, not since he was captured by the guards. That was...well, he doesn’t know how long ago it was. He can’t remember how long he was in the rehab facility.
Even Zed’s face loses the joy, both frowning at him. “It’s too dangerous, mate. They know what you look like. Everyone knows what you look like after the…”
Zed doesn’t need to say it. Mentioning the public execution by name wasn’t necessary, they all knew what Zed was saying. Tango stands, brushing his black pants clean of the dust and dirt the underground carries. “Besides, the bruises would be a dead giveaway as well. You stay down here, we’ll be back soon enough.”
Impulse watches Zedaph and Tango disappear down the dimly lit tunnels, wandering down the subway that was half built then forgotten. Leaving Impulse to his own devices, pacing nervously around the small cave they’ve claimed as theirs. His worries of them getting caught start morphing as time goes on. What if they’re wrong, and Cub does know who Zed and Tango are? What if they’re waiting to catch them when they can’t escape? What if they're walking right into a trap, and he can’t do anything from down here? What if Cub has been watching them all this time, and there’s cameras even in the underground? Impulse looks around, trying to find any sort of telltale hint of their little hideout being bugged.
He peels back maps, careful not to smudge his sloppy handwriting. Handwriting from when they were looking for a break in the wall. He presses the corners of the map back up, noting the empty area surrounding Hermitland. Whoever made this map didn’t even bother to fill in what’s beyond the wall- it might as well be the void, or not exist at all. Hermitland is the entire universe, the entire life of everyone left in this world.
He digs through chests, shaking bottles of redstone and flicking comparators. Nostalgia whispers across Impulse’s mind, remembering when he first met Zed and Tango. They were all first years in engineering school, having just passed their placement exams. Tango came from a well off family that had adopted him, Zed was a genius that won a competition, but Impulse just got lucky. Lucky to get a scholarship to become a redstone engineer. To help the people and the city. Back then, his idea of helping was developing better redstone lines, fixing old tech. Now, helping the city was freeing it from the corrupt hands that toy with them. Three friends, enjoying school and hassling over tests, turned into three rebels just trying to find their freedom.
Impulse goes through everything, even their beds, leaving the room a torn up disaster in his wake. He doesn’t find anything, but that doesn’t stop him from feeling like he’s being watched. Cub knows everything. He knew things about Impulse that even Tango and Zed didn’t know. But there’s nothing Impulse can do- just sit, waiting and twiddling his thumbs. Hoping for his friends to return.
-------------
“Do you think that’s enough food?” Tango whispers, looking at the bag full of apples, baked potatoes, and even some bundles of golden carrots.
“Once we’re out of the city, we’ll be able to find food no problem.” Zed laughs, putting the stone axe into the bottom of his bag. Hidden in case curfew officers ask what they have.
“How are you so sure it’s going to be lush and green beyond the wall? How do we know everything still isn’t fucked by the war?” Tango knows that Zed is a glass-half-full kind of guy, but even this surely must give him some pause. No one knows what’s beyond the wall. Not even the most knowledgeable rebels have ever even attempted to leave the city. That fear, that unknowing of what lies beyond. It could be nothing, it could be everything.
And that’s all they needed, all Impulse and Zed had been banking on. That everything is just beyond the wall. Tango was less sure, but the more that the others would chatter and dream, they would spark hope in him as well. That there was something beyond the wall. His friends gave him the hope that no other member of the underground ever gave Tango. It will be better beyond the wall- it has to be.
“All those years, and nothing grew back?” Zed giggles. “I know you’re from the inner city, Tango, but I worked in the farming industry. Plants are tricky little buggers. You can’t get them to stop growing when they really wanna. I’m sure there’s stuff out there.”
Tango shrugs the pack onto his shoulder, nodding towards the door. Towards the dark streets, distant figures scurrying towards home before getting in trouble with curfew officers. “Let’s get back. I want to be out of here before sunrise.”
The pair walk onto the streets, blending in with the other citizens. It’s easier for Zed, he doesn’t look so different as Tango. Tango always gets stopped by officers, questioned as to why he’s out. Lucky for the both of them, their jobs as redstone engineers grants them a certain amount of wiggle room. They can just claim they’re going to a build site that needs emergency maintenance. They slip through the night, unnoticed among the other people on the streets. Exact same clothing, exact same demeanor. They shouldn’t be out past curfew. Zed stops in the middle of the street, scrabbling his fingers against Tango’s arm. “We need to go to Impulse’s house.”
“What? Why?” That’s a stupid idea. If there’s anywhere they’ll most likely be seen, mostly likely get investigated, it’s Impulse’s apartment. It’s probably bugged to hell and back. Where they first thought to search for Impulse after his escape.
“We both grabbed things from our homes...it’s only fair he has one thing from his childhood. I know exactly what to get too. Please, Tango. It’ll be quick. No one will notice. You can use that jammer of yours to keep Cub and his drones from seeing.” The two look up into the sky, beyond the dim street lights to see if any of the surveillance drones are listening in.
Tango sighs. “It’s only a few blocks. Let’s go. But we need to be quick.”
They take off down the street, creeping down alleys to avoid busy intersections or patrolling drones. Out of the luxurious upper class sector, into the blue-collar apartments and homes. Smaller, looming over one another. Some houses are in disrepair, but still housing families of people.
And there’s Impulse’s apartment. One of many doors to a long line of apartments, but his is the only one with the door wide open. The hinges nearly off their bolts, thin wood slowly creaking in the wind. Zed pauses at the doorway, looking just to his left. Into the brush and bushes that surround the steps up to Impulse’s apartment.
“Zed?” Tango waves his hand across his friend’s blank stare. They shouldn’t be seen here.
“I saw it happen, you know. I was here when they took him. Right there.” Zed points out where he hid in the foliage. “Impulse saw them coming, and shoved me out the window. Told me not to move no matter what. They tore the door open, and dragged him out by his hair. Kicking and Screaming, no sense of humanity towards him. I should’ve done something to stop them, but Impulse told me not to move. They disappeared into an unmarked vehicle, off towards Bastion Towers.”
He takes shaking steps up to the door, each rise up the stairs weakening his knees. All the optimism in Zed is gone, shadowed by memories so much worse than dreams. He should have done something, anything, to stop them. To help his friend.
Inside Impulse’s apartment was a disaster. Drawers flung open and contents spilled out. The sparse furniture broken and scattered. It looks like a horde of monsters came through here. The truth isn’t that far off. It’s a small apartment, really just a living area and a branched off bedroom. For this part of the city, having it’s own bathroom is fancy. Impulse was proud of the hard work he did to get this place. And now it’s all destroyed.
Zedaph knows exactly where it is. What he knows will be the one thing Impulse would take with him. And lucky for them, it wasn’t harmed. The clock had been knocked off the shelf it sat on, but the arms still clicked along at their steady, equal pace. The brass frame was dented, but it didn’t stop the intricate clockwork from continuing to run. Zed crouches down, picking up the redstone infused clock.
“His first redstone project. That’s a brilliant idea, Zed.” Tango whispers, looking at the moon continue to rise against the black night sky. Impulse even painted stars onto it. “I remember when he showed us this. Our first time going out to lunch together, all three of us.”
“Let’s get back to him. I’m sure he’s on the verge of a breakdown.” Zed carefully stows the precious, cobbled together clock into the pocket of his slacks. Just as they slipped out of the underground, they returned.
None the wiser that they’ve been watched.
Always watched.
