This two-sided poster was created in conjunction with the Museum of Modern Art’s exhibition “The Architecture of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts,” October 29, 1975- January 4, 1976. 

“In order to illustrate the influence of the Ecole on American architects, the League took the occasion of the Museum’s show to produce a poster/map with walking tours of some of the key Beaux-Arts style buildings, monuments and public spaces in New York City, many of which were designed by early founders of the League such as Cass Gilbert, Thomas Hastings and Alexander B. Trowbridge” - The Architectural League of New York Newsletter Winter 1976.

The black and white photograph is by Cervin Robinson and features Architect Cass Glbert’s US Customs House, part the Architectural League’s walking tour.

Beyond this poster, the Vignellis had a long relationship with the Architectural League. The graphics for the Architectural League (including the logotype in Garamond) were designed by Vignelli Associates in the early 1970s. Massimo Vignelli served as Vice President of the League. In 2011, Massimo and Lella Vignelli were awarded their highest honor the President’s Medal, which recognizes “extraordinary contributions to architecture and design.”

Henri Fantin-Latour Henri Fantin-Latour (in full Ignace-Henri-Jean-Théodore Fantin-Latour) b. January 14, 1836, Grenoble, France - d. August 25, 1904, Buré was a French painter, printmaker and illustrator noted for his still-lifes with flowers. Fantin-Latour’s portraits - especially group compositions - featured contemporary French celebrities in the arts. A precursor to Warhol?! Fantin-Latour’s first teacher was his father a well-known portrait painter. Later he studied at the school of ‘Lecoq de Boisbaudran' and attended the ‘École des Beaux-Arts’. He exhibited at the official ‘French Salons’ but in 1863 he also showed his work in the rebel ‘Salon des Refusés’. Although academic in manner Fantin-Latour was independent in style. He had numerous friends among the leading French painters of his day - J.A.D. Ingres, Eugène Delacroix, Camille Corot, Édouard Manet and Gustave Courbet. His portrait groups - often arranged in rows of heads and figures like 17th-century Dutch guild portraits - are perhaps most interesting for their portrayal of various literary and artistic persons of the time. Fantin-Latour’s flower paintings were particularly appreciated in England where, through James McNeill Whistler and Sir John Everett Millais, Fantin-Latour found a patron in Edwin Edwards. A wealthy amateur engraver Edwards supported Fantin-Latour for years by purchasing his still-lifes. The last period of Fantin-Latour’s life was primarily devoted to lithography. In the ‘Salon’ of 1876 he exhibited ‘L’Anniversaire’ honouring composer Hector Berlioz. Thereafter his lithographs were shown regularly. Most characteristic were his delicate portraits and imaginative drawings illustrative of the music of Richard Wagner, Berlioz and others. Du rez-de-chaussée au niveaux supérieurs, les lieux offrent un incroyable espace de travail, une lumière époustouflante et une vue inédite aux 180 étudiants. Fascinating South East Asia with this rendition of a scene in a theatre in French occupied Vietnam - Indochina - at the beginning of the XXth century by Joseph Gilardoni (1882-1961). He Was a regular exhibitor at various colonial fairs such as the “Exposition Coloniale de Bordeaux” in 1920. He is part of what is called now “L’Ecole des peintres voyageurs d’Indochine”.
