I had to look up didius julianus after my wife proposed him as a cat namesake (to be fair, mostly bc it lends itself to the nickname “didi “), and I gotta say, buying the office of Roman emperor after the praetorian guard killed the last guy is just a phenomenally stupid move.

Ruins of Roman Emperor Nero's 'Theatre' Unearthed in Rome
Archaeologists in Rome think they may have found Nero's theater during a hotel excavation.
Archaeologists in Rome think they may have found the ruins of Nero's theater, a first-century imperial performance space that was widely described in ancient Roman texts but whose whereabouts had remained largely elusive.
The theater is named after Nero Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus, who served as Roman emperor from A.D. 54 to his death in 68. Officials are calling the discovery of the theater, located just east of Vatican City, "exceptional." It was likely where Nero rehearsed poetry and put on musical performances, according to ABC News.
More than a millennium after his death, Nero remains one of ancient Rome's most infamous rulers, accused of playing his fiddle while the city burned to the ground during an epic fire. While much has been written about the atrocities and poor governance that occurred under his leadership — he allegedly killed his own mother and two wives and lavishly and indulgently spent Rome's money — he's also remembered as a lover of music and the arts, leading him to offer public performances at his theater, an act that the elite usually didn't partake in. He was particularly fond of playing the cithara, a portable harp-like instrument with seven strings.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But when the powerful Praetorian Guard, the force in charge of protecting the emperor, withdrew their support of him, he reportedly took his own life, uttering "what an artist dies in me!"
Researchers unearthed a variety of artifacts scattered among the building's ruins. These included seven ornate medieval glass chalices, segments of bone used to carve out rosary beads, clay pots and urns, cooking vessels for baking bread, coins, combs constructed out of bone and numerous pieces of musical instruments. As for the remaining architectural elements of the theater itself, archaeologists unearthed marble columns and plaster decorated in gold leaf, according to ABC News.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"It is a superb dig, one that every archaeologist dreams of," Marzia Di Mento, the site's chief archaeologist, told reporters during a news conference, according to ABC News. "Being able to dig in this built-up, historically rich area is so rare."
The discovery came about as construction crews were working on reconfiguring Palazzo Della Rovere, a medieval palace, into a new luxury hotel, and was found buried beneath the structure's walled garden, according to The Associated Press.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Artifacts from the excavation will be put on display and added to a "city-run public databank to add to the wealth of information gathered over the years on life in Rome throughout the centuries," according to ABC News.
Archaeologists plan to rebury the theater once excavations wrap up.

Commodus: The end of an Era.
"The reign of Commodus marked the end of the Golden Age and the beginning of the Age of Rusty Iron." Cassius Dio (72.36.4)
Tumblr media
Lucius Aelius Aurelius Commodus was born on August 31, 161. Curiously, he was born on the same day and month as 'Caligula', the first assassinated Roman emperor. He was the first who been born being the son of the reigning emperor, Marcus Aurelius.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
M. Aurelius and Verus ruled together peacefully for eight years. Verus fought against the Parthians who had threatening to take Syria and Armenia. Returned to Rome and had his triumphal parade without knowing that he and his legions were carrying with them a plague that arose in the war zone. The plague spread throughout the empire and was the deadliest in Roman history. In 169 co emperor Lucius Verus died due this plague.
The boy Commodus
Tumblr media
In 172, at age of 11, he received, in the presence of the army in Germania, the title Germanicus (a victory tittle). He participated alongside his father in several battles.
175. Empress Faustina the Younger died of natural causes in Cappadocia where she accompanied her husband. On the same year Commodus entered the College of Pontiffs, which was the starting point of his public career.
176. Marcus Aurelius granted him the position of Imperator, and the following year the title Augustus.
In January of 177, at the age of 15 , he became the youngest consul in the history of the Empire.
178. At age of 16 married to Bruttia Crispina, a very rich 13 year old girl.
March 17, 180, Marcus Aurelius died of natural causes and Commodus became sole emperor at the age of 18.
Tumblr media
His first measure was to sign peace treaties both with Germanic tribes and some rebellious people of Britannia. This was frowned upon by his contemporaries, but modern historians agree that it was the only good action he ever took during his entire reign.
About his sister.
Tumblr media
Lucilla had been co-empress and held the title Augusta along with her mother when she married the co-emperor Lucius Verus. Following Verus' death, Marcus Aurelius married her to senator Tiberius Pompeianus, a man of humble origins and without ambitions. In this way she lost the privileged position that she had.
In the winter of 181-182 Lucilla with her cousins Quadratus Annianus and Ummidia Faustina, her husband's nephew, Quintianus, and her own daughter Plautia, agreed to assassinate Commodus in the exit hallway of Flavian amphitheater (Colosseum) .The one chosen to kill was Quintianus. Incredibly, although proven, Pompeianus was completely unaware of the plot of his wife.
Tumblr media
According to historical sources, when Quintiano saw Commodus, instead of stabbing him, slowly took out his dagger, showed it to him and said "The Senate send to you this dagger." Commodus shouted for his guard who immediately arrested him. The names of the involved were quickly known; Quintianus and Quadrato were executed. Lucilla, her daughter, and U. Faustina were sent into exile on Capri but and also executed there.
Following this event, he distanced himself from the elite and began to trust only in people of humble origins, among them Marcus Aurelius Cleander, former slave and freedman of Marcus Aurelius. In a short time he held important positions until he became the head of the Praetorian Guard.
In 187 due his wife's failure to become pregnant, banished her to Capri. 26-year-old Commodus, instead of marrying another aristocratic woman, chooses to have a concubine- Marcia, daughter of a freedwoman of co-emperor Lucius Verus.
Tumblr media
The emperor treated her as a wife, so she had the same power and influence as an empress. It is very probable that Marcia was a Christian since she convinced Commodus to implement a pro-Christian policy, and had a close relationship with Victor I , Bishop of Rome.
Villa of the Quintilii and the rebellion of the people.
Tumblr media
Commodus and Marcia retired to the lavish Villa of the Quintilii, whose ruins are today an archaeological site. On April of 190 the people had revolted in Rome because of famine.
There is a suspicion that the shortage of food may have been caused by the prefect of Annona (the import and free distribution of grain to the people) Papirius Dionysius who blamed Cleander.
During a horse-race in the Circus Maximus, the audience to rioted against Cleander. He escaped and managed to reach the Villa of the Quintilii to ask the emperor for help, but the mob followed him there. Commodus, fearing the fury of the people, ordered Cleander to be beheaded.
Tumblr media
By then Commodus was already showing signs of an extreme megalomania. The list of people executed, accused without evidence of conspiracy, including his own aunt, consuls, senators and praetorians, is endless. After Lucilla's plot, only one other had been true and proven, the other conspiracies were only in his mind.
He gave himself the title PIUS, like his maternal grandfather emperor Antoninus, and ordered busts of himself to be made representing him as Hercules.
Madness and death.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In 192 changed the name of Rome to "Comodiana" and announced that a new era was approaching, he called it Saeculum Felix (Happy Century). The months also was renamed with Commodus own names and titles as well of his dynasty. Thus, the year would begin with the month Imperator followed by Commodus, Augustus, Germanicus, Pius, Lucius, Aelius, Aurelius, etc, not even the mystical July month was saved from this.
According to historical sources, he had shaved his beard, which had been in fashion since his grandfather's time, and also changed his thick curly hair for Gladiator curt hair style. Had his own games in which he competed against gladiators who were forced to consume opium and drink wine excessively.
On December he announced that starting in the new year everything would change in Rome since the Senate wold be dismissed. Senators along with Marcia, who had had enough of Commodus, began to plan his death.
During the feast of December 31 Marcia put poison in his food, but Commodus had drunk too much and vomited immediately, so he ended the party and ordered that his bath be prepared.
Senators made Plan B; They sent a freedman named Narcissus, who "because of his size and strength he did not need to hide daggers or swords, his hands were enough." Narcissus found Commodus in the bathtub, and strangled him. Other sources say he drowned him in the bathtub. Be that as it may, 31 years old Commodus never saw his long-awaited new year.
Tumblr media
On January 1, 193, the throne was auctioned to the highest bidder. The final price was stipulated at 25,000 sesterces per soldier. This caused a great scandal in Rome. Pertinax replaced Commodus, but on March he too was killed. Then Didius Julianus ruled for a few days. Finally that year Septimius Severus who was an excellent ruler- after his death, he was deified by the Senate- became the first emperor originally from the province of Africa; Born in Leptis Magna (modern Libya) was of Berber and Punic origin, and with his wife Julia Domna, born in Syria and of Arab origin, they created the Severan Dynasty.
Commodus was not wrong when he said that from that year on everything would change in Rome.

Constantly waking up and thinking about how alternate Joxer's are battle-worn. Joxer II with a series of scars at his left brow, Roman Soldier Joxer with a scar against his right cheekbone.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Both have fought for their lives at times, so for all we know, they have more scars hidden under their chosen attire.
One of them being part of a resistance group, constantly fighting tooth-and-nail to keep their neck under a Godly Tyrant's whim. The other is a veteran of the front lines, becoming a part of the Praetorian Elite (wears purple garb that is challenging to come by and saved only for the Emperor's Guard).
Also, aside from the intense saturation of color for both episodes to aid the viewer in differentiating timelines, both men are very tan.
One's a survivor who may have spent the earliest parts of his life at granaries and vineyards, or fishing and hunting, before becoming enslaved and forced to work the mines and quarries. His only choice is to rise and fight for freedom. The other is a soldier standing at his post on the wall, protecting civilians, roads, cargo and reserves, until war-sworn duties are called. He's then made to protect a tyrant's way of life. Each scenario has the sun beating down on you relentlessly. They've been worked and out in the elements.
The Joxer we know is relatively pale in comparison. He's also not marred.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Albeit well traveled, Joxer found company with others who allow him to be a little more reserved in what he does and where he finds himself. For the most part, there's no life or death decisions to be made regularly. He can pick and choose his whereabouts, along with the decision to stay and fight. He can always move with the shade and never get his hands dirty. The last thing he wants to do is hurt someone and have them respond in kind.
Joxer never gets hurt to the extent it would be displayed permanently.

know very little about star wars so had a very surreal moment earlier browsing the build-a-bear website and thinking that it was odd that they should sell (even very inaccurate) praetorian guard uniforms for your bear until i saw the little TM and connected the dots
kids these days they don't want to dress their bear up as a superhero or an elf or a star war they want an elite bodyguard who they can imagine serves as escort for their favourite historical procurator

It's all about blood. The blood spilled between the Republic of Mareen and the armies of the Blood Emperor long ago. The blood gifts of Mareen's deadliest enemies. The blood that runs through the elite War Houses of Mareen, the rulers of the Tribunal dedicated to keeping the republic alive. The blood of the former Legatus, Verne Amari, murdered. For his granddaughter, Ikenna, the only thing steady in her life was the man who had saved Mareen. The man who had trained her in secret, not just in martial skills, but in harnessing the blood gift that coursed through her. Who trained her to keep that a secret. But now there are too many secrets, and with her grandfather assassinated, Ikenna knows two things: that only someone on the Tribunal could have ordered his death, and that only a Praetorian Guard could have carried out that order. Bent on revenge as much as discovering the truth, Ikenna pledges herself to the Praetorian Trials--a brutal initiation that only a quarter of the aspirants survive. She subjects herself to the racism directed against her half-Khanaian heritage and the misogyny of a society that cherishes progeny over prodigy, all while hiding a power that--if found out--would subject her to execution...or worse. Ikenna is willing to risk it all because she needs to find out who murdered her grandfather...and then she needs to kill them. Mareen has been at peace for a long time... Ikenna joining the Praetorians is about to change all that.

Translation:
You speak loudly,
Do not forget who put you on the throne,
Remember, your life belongs to us.
- Song of the Praetorians by Farya Faraji
----------------------------------------
The Praetorian Guard, the elite body guards of the Caesars and Agustus of Rome. Created by Princeps Augustus Caesar, the Praetorian Guard were supposed to be the loyal guards of the Imperator, ready to protect him from all threats. However, over time, they got too involved in Roman politics and palace intriuge. Delusioned by the power they possed, their officers eventually became corrupt and, in many cases, ended up killing the Caesars they were supposed to protect, before raising into Imperial power the man they desired. If this appointed man chose to go against their interests, then the Praetorians would assasinate him too and repeat the process. At one point, the Praetorians even sold the position of Imperator to the highest bidder.
Eventually, Imperator Constantine the Great would abolish the Praetorians as a guard unit, with its remnants being sent to the frontiers. He would replace them with the much more trustworthy Palatini, "Palace Troops".

The Praetorian Guard is said to be one of the most prestigious military units in the ancient world, and is arguably one of the most well-known today. These elite soldiers are best known for serving as the Roman Emperors’ bodyguards. Ironically, several emperors were actually assassinated by their own Praetorian Guards and a few others were placed on the throne by them. Apart from that, the Praetorian Guard had other duties that are perhaps less well-known than their primary duty of protecting the emperor.

history of magic: schools of witchcraft 2/?
ancient rome
the early roman schools of magic operated much the same as their counterparts (and contemporaries) in greece; offering sanctuary and preserving knowledge. the kingdom and early republic periods were characterized by a saturation of magical schools, none of which rose to dominance until the late republic, when an institution established under the eternal city itself began to exert its influence over all the others. as the roman republic transformed into the roman empire, the school grew with it, working in the shadows unbeknownst to the muggle emperors and senate. as rome itself conquered new territories, so did the school, slowly taking over the magical governance of each new region.
through this covert colonialism, roman witches and wizards were able to spread their influence far and wide, all across the empire. as with any conquest, many areas resisted and thus roman magical education included rigorous combat training. other forms of magic included curse tablets, amulets, and elaborate rituals that required many participants. the relationship between roman wizards and muggles was an unsteady one. there were times of peace and times when the wizards went completely unnoticed by even the highest offices, and then there were times when magic was persecuted against brutally. for protection, the school formed an elite guard consisting of its best students, called the praetorian guard as a mirror to the muggle emperor’s personal guard.
during the early decades of common era, tensions began to rise within the roman wizarding society, eventually boiling over into a full-blown civil war in 64 ce. the current head of the school, caelius isidorus wanted to subjugate the emperor nero to his will, while his sister and fellow teacher calpurnia wanted to remain in the shadows and keep the peace. both had been a part of the praetorian guard and both had been considered as the next head of the school, and thus held sway over the wizarding society.
caught in the middle of this sibling rivalry were gaius livius, a teacher at the school, and an old friend of both caelius and calpurnia from the time they served in the guard, and berenice, an egyptian witch with a mysterious past.

The Rise and Fall of The Praetorian Guard
THE PRAETORIAN GUARD WERE AN ELITE UNIT WITHIN THE IMPERIAL ARMY, SERVING PRIMARILY AS PERSONAL PROTECTORS AND INTELLIGENCE OPERATIVES FOR THE ROMAN EMPERORS.
The roots of the guard can be found during the Roman Republic, when soldiers served as protectors for Roman generals and important figures, or as elite guards for military praetors.
High-ranked generals with imperium held public office by serving as a magistrate or promagistrate. They were assigned a civil servant, lictors, to serve as an attendant and bodyguard. Where no personal bodyguard was assigned, senior field officers safeguarded themselves with temporary bodyguard units of selected soldiers.
Around 40 BC, Octavian, who would later become Emperor Caesar Augustus, installed praetorians within the pomerium (a religious boundary around the city of Rome), the first example of troops being permanently garrisoned in Rome proper.
Members of the guard accompanied Augustus on active campaigns, protecting the civic administrations and rule of law. At camp, the cohors praetoria (a cohort of praetorians guarding the commander), were posted near the praetorium, the tent of the commander, which the guard is believed to be named after.
After the construction of Rome’s Praetorian camp known as the Castra Praetoria around 23 BC, their role extended to escorting the emperor and the members of the imperial family, and to serve as a policing force during times of riot.
Tumblr media
According to the Roman historian and politician, Tacitus, the guard around this time numbered nine Praetorian cohorts (4500 men, the equivalent of a legion), however, an inscription from near the end of Augustus’s rule suggests that their numbers were briefly increased to twelve.
The Praetorian Guard, like all legionaries, shared similar insignia, mainly on their shields. Praetorian Guard shields included wings and thunderbolts, referring to Jupiter, and also uniquely included scorpions, stars and crescents.
The first military engagement of the Praetorian Guard took place during the mutinies of Pannonia and the mutinies of Germania. Drusus Julius Caesar, son of Tiberius, accompanied by two Praetorian cohorts, the Praetorian Cavalry, and Imperial German Bodyguards, suppressed the mutinies of Pannonia. Germanicus, later known as Germanicus Julius Caesar, led a force of legions and detachments of the Praetorian Guard in a two-year campaign in Germania against the uprising.
Tumblr media
In the three centuries that followed, the guard influenced imperial politics by overthrowing emperors and proclaiming the successor. Members of the guard were also directly involved in the assassination of emperors, such as: Aurelian, Balbinus, Caligula, Caracalla, Commodus, Elagabalus, Galba, Pupienus, Pertinax, Philip II, and Probus.
In AD 305, Diocletian and Maximian abdicated, and the former Caesares, Constantius and Galerius became Augusti. Although two sons of emperors, Constantine I and Maxentius were eligible, they were passed over for a new tetrarchy, and Valerius Severus and Maximinus Daza were appointed Caesars.
Severus planned to disband the Praetorian Guard on the orders of Galerius, resulting in the guard giving their allegiance to Maxentius and proclaiming him emperor. By AD 312, Constantine I marched on Rome with a force of 40,000 soldiers to eliminate Maxentius, facing off against an army that encompassed the bulk of the Praetorian Guard garrisoned in Rome at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge on the River Tiber.
Tumblr media
Contemporary accounts record Maxentius’s forces being pushed back against the river and retreating across the bridge. The weight of soldiers fleeing caused the bridge to collapse, stranding elements of the guard on the northern bank of the river who were either killed or taken prisoner.
Lucius Caecilius Firmianus, a Christian author and advisor to Constantine recorded the events: “The bridge in his rear was broken down. At sight of that the battle grew hotter. The hand of the Lord prevailed, and the forces of Maxentius were routed. He fled towards the broken bridge; but the multitude pressing on him, he was driven headlong into the Tiber [drowned].”
Maxentius’ body was fished out of the Tiber and decapitated, and his head was paraded through the streets of Rome. Supporters of Maxentius were eliminated and the Praetorian Guard and Imperial Horse Guard were disbanded. The remaining guard were sent in exile to the corners of the empire, and the Castra Praetoria was dismantled in a grand gesture that marked the end of the Praetorians.
