DAMIRAE PROMPT REQUEST 13 "You need a doctor."

It's an early Sunday morning in StarFire's Cafe, with a hint of a sunlit glow that drizzles over the city's horizon and a light traffic that accentuates the silent and vibrant scenery. At this point, many citizens are still in their beds with a peaceful day waiting for them….

...and then there's Raven who's shoving 300+ pages of lecture transcripts into her brain for an 80 point evaluation exam on Respiratory diseases.

Her mobile phone beside the pile of sheets lights up, catching her attention. She releases her pen and taps on the screen to check the message. Raven holds back a groan only for a heavy sigh to come out.

It's not unusual for a client to seek her consult on another case involving dark magic right when she has a pile of tasks stacked up for the week.

She highlights some lines and scratches some notes with increasing fervor until the end of the page. The door bell chimes, and she finds a familiar green face waving at her. Raven pauses to raise an eyebrow in recognition, taking a sip of a still chilly Matcha frappe, before she resumes scribbling her last few sentences. Her morning companion, Garfield, busies himself behind the counter, only visiting her table to place a plate of bacon egg sandwich.

"Thanks Gar." She says as she stops her scribbling to take a bite. He shoots her a grin. For someone who just finished a 3-month mission, Garfield manages to appear like he never once had a bruise in his life. His dark eyebags say otherwise.

Raven knows the Night Shift has ended when he's around. Cyborg and Starfire are usually the ones who take care of their night customers. Demons, sorcerers, and other supernatural heroes (and antiheroes) from this realm and other realms frequent this café for business dealings rather than pleasure. She may have seen Zatanna with Doctor Fate and Batman once when she and the other Titans met for another recon mission, but that's a rarity. Night Shift has a magic protocol she herself created (protection spells, invisibility spells, offensive spells, and the like) in order to produce a neutral environment for the purpose of any legal (and allegedly illegal) dealings.

Day Shifts, starting now as the first few customers enter the shop, are for humans.

"Did you check your phone?" Garfield asks while he returns to the table behind the counter, preparing for the day.

"Already did." She replies right before her cellphone receives another message.

"Check again!" He says, chuckling at her gruntled dismay.

Raven touches the phone screen, checking that the message she received was from Damian Wayne, asking (more like demanding) “her assistance over certain perilous matters of the darkest magics.” She ignores the thrill (and a boost to her ego) at the sight of Damian Wayne (who seems to have an annoying glaring problem with her) seeking for her consult. He has a lot of connections (from both villains and heroes) and could have gone for anyone else like Zatanna or Zach through Batman. The Zatara cousins are notoriously famous in all magic communities. Any realms she travels or leisures into and she hears stories of them and not any of them are the same.

Still, as flattered as she is at his gesture no matter how it was only for business and not pleasure, she ignores his message. Her exam isn’t going anywhere soon and Raven does not want to delve into her own complicated feelings with her own soulmate as of the moment. Her emotions, like energy work, take time and effort to untangle themselves. Her heritage and her practice amplify them and while she has more grip with her own empathic abilities, mishaps are unavoidable.

And she doesn’t want to deal with them right now. She’s taken precautions to protect her energy and keep a balanced energy field around her and fortunately for her, humans rarely venture to this coffee shop on Sunday mornings so few customers are around as of the moment.

Unfortunately, today has other plans for her when she catches Damian’s energy at cafe’s alleyway.

Immediately, Raven hovers her hands as subtle as she can over the table and closes her eyes. She targets the surge of energy, and determines that he is alive but feels the dark energy lingering in his wounds. She takes a deep breath and exhales, visualizing an invisible barrier to keep non-Titans and villains away.

"Azarath, Metrion, Zinthos." Once the spell activates, she quickly shoves her stuff into her back and shoots up from her seat, leaving the unfinished beverage she ordered. It's not unusual for students to come and go so she slips past the now crowded line without notice. By the time she exits out of the cafe, her glamour spell has already been on and she's now in her hero uniform.

Raven makes a turn for the alleyway. She doesn't even have to look elsewhere to find his body, not in this cramped space and the ghastly smell of the garbage containers. On instinct, she casts an air freshener spell, flooding the alleyway with a mild floral scent.

Raven pauses as she catches the sight of his body. He's lying supine among the black trash bags, dark magic oozing from his extremities and at the right hypogastric area of his abdomen. It appeared as if someone just dumped him there.

Or... no. It wasn't that someone dropped him from a high area but more so that someone shot him with dark magic and Robin, being Robin, evaded the perpetrator as best as he could and dumped himself into the nearest area that's securely warded by her magic.

"Hello there, fellow citizen." Raven greets him with the usual flat look but she's aware that he sees the amused gleam shining through her lavender eyes.

"Hello." He says through ragged breaths but she hears, "Where the fuck have you been?" from the tone of his voice.

"That looks broken. You need a doctor." She says and it earns a grunt from the boy wonder himself. The silent judgment is already heavy with tension so she eases her energy field in, and focuses her attention on his wounds instead. She kneels by his side and hovers her hands over his body, palms and fingers glowing in deep lavender.

So far nothing damaging along his chest and upper abdominal area. She doesn’t sense any fractures along the trunk, extremities, and spinal area. Only open wounds are the ones brimming with dark magic. But wait-

Shit.

The dark magic is gradually eating through his flesh. So far the upper extremities and the abdomen have superficial damage but it can’t be said for the one on his right shank. Raven keeps her glowing hand hovered on the flesh.

They’re past dermis the now, she notes, but it’s only scratched the surface of the muscle tissue. She calculates that she still has enough time but at the unknowable rate of which the magic is eating at him, it would have been a lot more fatal by the next hour.

It’s now or never, she supposes. She isn’t familiar with the source of the magic but nevertheless, it can be transmuted.

The sorceress keeps her magic glow throughout his body and stands in front of him. She closes her eyes with her palms towards the sky and takes a deep breath, drawing out her mystic power from within, in preparation. She mutters a warding spell and a glowing purple bubble encapsulates the two, containing the unknown magic within.

Raven lifts her arms to the sky and her sigil appears right where they’re situated, glowing brighter than it usually does.

"By the power of Azarath, I seek your guidance. Grant me the strength and the courage to undo the sorcery done on this poor, wretched soul." She whispers. As if to answer her prayer, she feels the power within her brighten ten-fold, engulfing her and Damian in this majestic, blinding white light...

"Azarath. Metrion. Zinthos."

..until suddenly, there is nothing but the light.

...

Everything returns to its normal state of equilibrium. Raven completes the ritual and the ward and sigil all dissipate, leaving her with Robin absent of any dark magic. Still, she crouches down again and lifts her glowing white hands towards him, checking for his vitals.

So far, blood pressure, heart rate, and respiratory rate all have normal measurements. There is absence of any contusions, lacerations, abrasions, penetrating wounds, or any other type of wound. The ones done by the dark magic are fully healed and there are no lingering scars.

She, however, feels the fatigue. Whether it's coming from him or her, she can't tell at this point. That was a powerful spell and Raven is going to need all the mental and emotional strength for tomorrow's exam. She reminds herself to sign a leave of absence for a month because ward work is coming for her right after that exam and she needs to amp up her energy shields.

Raven watches his face in the soft incandescence of her lingering magic and.. as much as she feels endeared by him right now, she lets herself feel the annoyance at the emergency call on a Sunday morning.

By Azarath, do they need more sorcerers. This fuckery has to stop.

She is definitely changing numbers.

It has to be A Court of Mist and Fury. I would actually cry if I could experience reading for the first time over again. It is everything that I love in books perfected.

Nothing?? I’m in my finals week right now for college so I haven't read anything in a couple of months... cause college.

I did at one point but not anymore. I would design a cover though.

WRITING TAG

1) How many works in progress do you currently have in progress?

Two, exactly, I’m not counting the ones I will never get back to (means Ryan/Kassian and Robert/Damien). My inspiration usually works in a way that if I won’t write something in one go or every day since I started... I won’t finish it so.

2) Do you/would you write fanfiction?

I usually write fanfictions, but for me it’s not that huge of a difference, because, let’s face it, what is the difference between fanfics and not? You need to put the same amount of work into fanfics as into “non fanfics”.

3) Do you prefer paper books or ebooks?

I love paper books, but I am aware of the fact I don’t have too much place to buy a lot of them, so now I use ebooks.

4) When did you start writing?

Fuck, when I think about it, the first thing I wrote with my friends was at the age of 12. 

5) Do you have someone you trust that you share your work with?

Um I don’t understand the question, but I usually know @serathefistingelf won’t laugh at my ideas (and she’s the best beta so that’s also the case). 

6) Where is your favorite place to write?

My bed.

7) Favorite childhood book?

I have no idea how is it called in english, but there was that book series written by René Goscinny and Jean-Jacques Sempé and it was about that kid called Mikołajek. And of course Harry Potter series, my dad used to read this to me every night. 

8) Writing for fun or writing for publication?

FUN! You don’t even know how many fics I wrote just to read them by myself (and I sometimes make my own ships nobody cares about lmao).

9) Pen and paper or computer?

If I could, I’d write everything on paper.

10) Have you ever taken any writing classes?

Nah, I don’t have the money and I actually had never thought about it. 

11) What inspires you to write?

I’d say: everything. Sometimes it’s music. Sometimes it’s the situation I see. Sometimes it’s thing seen outside the window. Sometimes (very often) it’s the light in a room or smell. Sometimes I just walk from the shop and I got the fragment of a conversation in my head and I have to write it down and create the story for it.

I’m not sure if I made it on time or if this is late but here is my YOI fandom appreciation post!! In the short time I’ve been here people have been nothing but kind to me and have always made me feel welcome. 

I’ve also been having a pretty shit couple of days but with everyone tagging me in their appreciation and good things in life finally coming up I feel so much better today, in part because of this fandom. 

I’ll start with probably my newest best friend Marti, @venenix, witout whom I wouldn’t have even half as many of my headcanons. From the moment we started screaming at each other in all caps and S P A C E S I knew we were gonna be friends. Whether it’s me sinning, you cheering me up, or both of us losing our shit over Vichris/Vichrisuuri, my day isn’t complete if I haven’t talked to you. I love you, Marti, mio stellina, mio girasolle.  

Of course, I also have to special mention Lea, @otasucc, for being an absolute doll. You’re kind, funny, and always have an ear for me when I rant about fuckbois TM or Our Boys (you know… the entire YOI cast). You’re gorgeous and I can’t wait to get drunk with you <3

Next up, my emo in not disguise, Noelle @otabaeee, without whomst my life would be much less bright. You were one of the first people I talked to in this fandom and I couldn’t be more grateful that you responded with kindness and enthusiasm, without you I wouldn’t know half of the people I know now. You rock, I love you, stay emo bitch. Oh, and when are you and me and Lea getting white girl wasted TM?

Help!"

The pleading cry jars him awake. Robin jolts up with tensed muscles and a fierce grip on the unsheathed sword beside him. A deep, revolting, menacing laugh rumbles in his mind like a prelude to an unforeseen terror. It is a frequent occurrence in the middle of the night that still terrifies him but his assassin-trained muscle memory is already built for danger's spontaneity.

His five senses still hones into the nightmare he escaped but he grounds himself to the present moment. He needs to be sure that nothing escapes his awareness.

A beat of silence passes before he concludes that there is nothing amiss. Damian allows his hands to release their grip from his sword as his head gently relaxes on the pillow. His mind reels back to the stream of thoughts he only indulges in the late night.

There are visions that he cannot fully comprehend sometimes. They haunt him at night, more than the usual nightmares he gets from his time with the League of Assassins.

The visions spoke of a future, desolate of any human life. The streets crawling with creatures from another planet, eating human flesh and leaving trails of dismembered corpses and spattered blood and guts. The Titans tower was in ruins and the rest of his team was nowhere to be found with no knowledge of their death or survival. His own father in the hands of an unforeseen conqueror of worlds and his brother revived from the dead yet barely living himself.

And then there's Raven.

The visions of her are somewhat incomprehensible. They were of confessions of a love they both pined for, of a passing moment of bliss before being enveloped in a blinding light of the unknown, of an oath they were bound to keep no matter the life they will lead to next..

"I will find you. I promise." He would hear himself say. For all his sixteen years of living, he's never promised anything to anyone. So it must have come from another time.. another place..

Another life. And the only thing that remained is a magic connection that somehow transcended the laws of time, space, and reality.

It’s that moment when he woke up one random morning after a random day and the only thing on his mind were those violet eyes.

Damian's always been enamored by her vibrant violet eyes. He's seen them before, at the brink of death in the snowy mountains. That was the first time she healed him but he felt otherwise. His body welcomed her magic like a memorized passage, as though he sang this song a long time ago.

The comforting familiarity is a bliss but the horrible foreboding nightmares that follow it provide him a plethora of adjectives he cannot transcribe in a sentence.

Damian thinks that maybe it started with her screams. He hears them sometimes. The pain in her voice echoes throughout the gruesome horrors of Hell. He'd find himself in a demon-swarmed stadium under blood-ridden skies where a little girl draped in a white cloak escapes a swarm of cackling chimeric beasts. At the side of the stadium, Trigon is at ease on his throne with a nasty smile on his face.

In those moments, not once does Damian's eyes stray away from her expression. Because the longer the battle ensues, the more her tear-stricken face masks into empty blank eyes and a dead frown of a shell. Damian feels the numbness of it all. The magic that which she possesses gradually strengthens but the trauma lingers.

Being trapped in a crystal and encased in a box sealed in a complex spell work, most of Trigon's power is inhibited and contained. Being the daughter of a demon and conqueror of worlds, Raven carries the burden of his occasional psychic torture.

And Damian… he's helpless to it all. He can't rush over to her with a sword in hand like they would in every Titan mission. He can't wrap his arms around her like he would in their previous life. 

Because it's someone else's nightmare to relive and he's merely an audience in a movie theater. 

Damian doesn't know how far their connection can bridge their minds but he can still hear her father's demonic laughter reverberate throughout their combined consciousness. He cannot quantify the strength of the magic within their bond and he hesitates to learn the truth.

Neither of them broached the topic and he isn't sure how. As Robin, he sees her as a competent partner, her magic strangely complementing his every movement in any mission. As Damian, he lists her as one of the most important people in his life. For the three years they've cohabited the same Titan tower, they ventured through the most dreadful nights and the peaceful days without a single shred of a thought of running away from each other. Their conversations during sleepless nights involved a lot of their trauma, with thick blankets around their shoulders and tea to last the endless dark skies. 

But they don’t instigate a heavy discussion over the bond and they skip past the nightmares, and most of her more burdensome memories that come with it. Simply because he has little to no understanding of their connection and is waiting for her to break the silence. A part of him senses that she has an inkling but still has yet to comprehend its entirety.

(If that’s what he picked up from the bond or from his own deduction, he cannot say.)

Damian slides his feet to the ground and moves to the couch by the window. He watches the clouds pass by, parting space for the moon to grace a smile. He gazes back as its shimmering reflects against his green irises. He feels a heartbeat that isn't his own, loud and clear outside the hall. Taking deep breaths, he closes his eyes and focuses on his own heartbeat, as though soothing his own would soothe theirs.

The door suddenly opens and his ears twitch at the light footsteps coming towards his way. His eyes stay closed, trusting her presence. The footsteps stop by his feet but not a word escapes her lips, not even a sound. Damian opens his eyes and looks up, entranced by her weary violet irises glowing in his dark, moonlit room. Neither of them breaks the silence. Damian allows himself to peruse through all that is her. The purple hair flows down to her waist, with a shadow cascading against the dark circles around her eyes and the deep frown formed on her lips. 

“I had a nightmare.”

“It was him again.”

“And I felt you with me while I was with him.”

“I’m tired.”

She doesn’t say but her whole body screams it so. 

He stands up and takes one step, barely bridging the gap between them. Damian takes Raven’s hands in his, raises them to his face, and plants a tiny kiss. The gesture seems to break her mask when he finds a single tear stream down her face and her lips quivering. He feels her hands shake and his heart aches that she might collapse to the floor then and there. 

So he kisses her hands again and again, making sure he doesn’t leave a corner untouched. Her body doesn’t stop trembling quietly as more tears start to fall. She pinches her eyes shut and lets her head fall, hiding away her vulnerable state. Raven has done that for years, hiding her tears in the darkest corners, keeping herself within the shell she’s made. She doesn’t have to do that with just him. 

He closes the gap between them and tucks her head on his neck. Damian rubs one hand on her back, soothing the tension away from her muscles. He kisses the shell of her ear and asks, “Come to bed with me?”

Without waiting for her affirmation, Damian scoops Raven into his arms and saunters over to his bed. He lays her down first, her purple tresses pooling his pillow. He gently combs them away and follows after as he snakes an arm around her waist. His beloved turns to face his chest and closes her eyes. Exhaustion now prominent in her features. Her shell is now broken and she’s laying herself bare to him. So Damian cradles her, feeling her breaths gradually evening out. 

And for a moment, everything is still and steady that the past is already just a page from an old book, no longer terrifying and the future is somewhere written among the stars as a prophecy of hope. The present is all that matters as they sleep a dreamless sleep in each other's arms.

Everything else can wait till morning.

The questions I need to answer:

My questions: 1) What got you into fandom?

Pretty boys and nice quotable lines. :P Well, I do love anime in general so I am into a bunch of shonen anime and some shoujo too. (Used to be more shoujo than shounen but blame sports anime.)

2) If you could switch places with a celebrity who would you choose?

I dunno. I don’t think I’d like to switch places with a celebrity and have to deal with too many people.

3) How do you deal with conflict?

^ As with the above answer. I can’t people much so... It honestly depends on how I am. These days I just shut down. Not the best way. But it’s either that or I get so furious and it’s really bad when it happens. And I hate it when it does happen.

4) What’s the best thing you’ve created? (if it’s fic or art, link please!)

A crocheted toy for my kid’s daughter. XD It’s funny how she refers to it as cat-bear-dog. My friend sent me a picture last week of her daughter (now much older than when I gave it) holding cat bear dog. I am a proud auntie. 

5) Who is your favorite YOI character and why?

Just one?! It’s hard. It’s Otabek and Yuri. Not just because I ship them. I just love the way they are both driven and passionate about figure skating. How Otabek is possibly secretly very extra (because of Park Guell) and how Yuri is possibly a soft-hearted boy who is just very tsudere.

6) What was your favorite playground game as a kid?

I wasn’t really into playgrounds. We used to go outside the house to play sometimes though. It would be a local version of hopscotch.

7) What is your Hogwarts House?

Ravenclaw.

8) Who do you most want to cosplay?

These days? Mari Katsuki. <3

9) What fictional character are you most like?

Probably Asahi of Haikyuu. Not that I am an ace player. I am not but the personality might be closest.

10) If you could visit anywhere, where would you go?

Japan. All the food, all the manga, all the art supplies. For real.

11) What is your favorite restaurant and thing to get there?

Four Seasons. I love hotpot and it’s just so nice and comforting. <3

1/ Which scene/paragraph/sentence are you the most proud of?

Omg, it’s going to sound arrogant, but there are so many options?? I’m just loving writing at the moment and I think such a long project as this series, whilst also having it’s lows, has a couple of moments that were just really fun to write, or that I genuinely think show an improvement in my writing. But if I have to choose one...

There’s a scene in Chapter 3 of Tournament of Marriage (spoilers) where Yuri stands up in front of a huge audience, takes his hood off, and gives Otabek a favour. It’s actually not particularly well-written (lol, is anything in that story tho) but it’s a moment that has come to define the rest of the series for me. 

For a start, I had to put a hell of a lot of time into designing the tournament and the situation itself so that it worked with my research and my world. And at the time, it was a big character moment. Yuri’s boldness in defying his father so publicly and against a rule that has defined his life for so long, only to choose Otabek like that, is a direct reflection of how quickly and easily Otabek became a part of his life, and how much of an affect he has had on Yuri. 

It was also symbolic; the casting off of Yuri’s bounds, a public statement that he wanted freedom, at the same time as absolutely tying himself to Beka. That’s a direct conflict of interests that follows him not just through the rest of the first book but well into the second. 

It was also a bit of a plant, and the public revelation of the real colour of his hair is something that has been affecting the story ever since. And I think, nearly thirty chapters later, it’s beginning to become clear quite how big a thing that is. 

2/ For which work/piece of work do you get comments telling how marvelous it is, while you’re not that enthralled by that piece yourself?

Cardigans and High Heels is literally just a short, bitchy piece about how different Skyfall would have been if Q was a woman, and how she would have dealt with it. It’s not even a properly explored concept, and I’d probably have deleted it by now if people didn’t seem to enjoy reading a pissed off, incredibly capable woman karate-kick misogyny in the face. 

3/ Which character highjacked the story they’re in?

Roza Altin. She was always going to travel with them, and she was always going to have a huge effect on both Yuri and Beka’s character development, but I poured so much time and love into making her backstory, her voice, and her internal thoughts and feelings, that she eventually got her own voice in the story, something that I never planned to do. I actually love presenting events through her eyes though! 

4/ Which sentence/kind of sentence do you overuse?

Person-verb-sentence. “She said” or “She smiled” or literally any actions. I just write such action-intense stories that it’s hard to find variation, but having a fairly clear idea of the stylistics I know I am occasionally capable of pulling off, it kills me inside a little bit XD 

5/ Which work of yours would you be dying to get fanart for?

Oh god, all of them. It’s the ultimate compliment!! Somebody once mentioned a possibility in passing and even though it never happened it’s easily one of the best comments I’ve ever had. I’ve actually thought about commissions for Thirst for Adventure, there are so many scenes based on real places, or interactions that are visibly imagined much more in-depth than I can write them. Even the characters - I have such clear ideas of what they’re wearing, what their horses and saddles and packs look like, how they wear their weapons and how they carry themselves... it would be wonderful to see it all. Well, maybe one day when the story’s finished and I’m not paying off a stupidly huge student debt :P

6/ Which work would you rather forget?

Ugh. ‘Bound To You’. Sherlock fan fiction that had an awesome concept (that wasn’t mine), but which ended up being FAR more complex and nuanced than I was capable of at the time (or would be now, to be honest). There were so many people who wanted me to finish that, but I never will. I’ve actually come close to deleting it a few times. It’s the reason I started a new tumblr when I decided I wanted to write for YOI instead of going back to my old one. 

7/ Do you have a project you never got the nerves/guts to write?

Oh hell yeah. Anything non-fandom XD Without the support of comments and things I get really self-conscious about what I’m writing, and whether it’s any good, and start pressuring myself to finish it, which takes all of the joy and enthusiasm out of it. There are original novels, finished and in progress, but I’m not happy with any of them. I really want to write something with an openly ace protagonist someday, but I’m not ready yet. I need to be able to finish a novel on my own. Although I did finally manage to write my coming-out blog post, and that was awesome to do <3 

8/ For which fandom have you written the most? (can be original fic, say if you count in terms of words, chapters or fics)

If we’re talking number of works, it’s Sherlock, but the longest word count by FAR is the Yuri on Ice Series at 161,852 words. That’s over half of my total word count on AO3!!
