Kept seeing this quote and some variation of it, so I felt like drawing something to fit the vibe.

One of the flowering plants that I chose is the “Antarctica Pearlwort” I also chose an emperor penguin since they were the most affected by the ice melt this yr, losing over 10,000 chicks in a colony.

Crowning the King Penguin

The second largest species of penguin in the world, the king penguin (Aptenodytes patagonicus) is found along the southern coasts of South America and Australia, as well as islands surrounding Antarctica. They thrive mainly along sparsely vegetated coasts and on the wide ice sheets that surround the Antarctic continent in the winter. They can endure temperatures of up to -10°C and swim in temperatures frequently below freezing.

The king penguin is among the largest penguins, about a meter at its tallest and weighing up to 18kg; generally females are slightly smaller than males. They look very similar to their larger relative the emperor penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri): both sport a dark grey or black head with yellow patches on the sides and throat, a dark back, and a white belly. However, the king penguin is more brightly coloured than the emporer penguin, and has a longer bill. Young penguins have an entirely brown coat, and only grow their adult feathers after several molts.

The primary food source for A. patagonicus are cephalopods and small fish, supplemented by krill and other marine invertebrates. Although they usually hunt in the upper water column for such prey, they regularly dive down to depths of over 200m. To find hunting grounds, king penguins can travel up to 500km from their colony. Year-round predators include fur seals, leopard seals and killer whales, and in the summer birds can snatch eggs and hatchlings.

Though king penguins have no formal social structure, they are highly social creatures. Groups of anywhere from a dozen to a hundred individuals travel together between seasons, hunt together, and frequently call to each other. Colonies themselves can easily number in the tens of thousands. King penguins also serially monogamous; they stay with one mate throughout a breeding season, and the next season both mates choose whether to return to their nest or search for a better mate. More often than not, pairs will stay together throughout multiple seasons, though king penguins do have lower rates of monogamy than other penguin species. King penguins also regularly exhibit homosexuality in the wild, with one study finding over a quarter of pairs in a colony were between same-sex individuals.

King penguins are one of only two species of penguin that do not build nests. At the beginning of the mating season, in spring, single males perform loud displays, throwing their head and wings back and puffing out their chests. The female chooses a mate, and the two perform a short dance, after which they molt together for a month. Shortly after, the female lays one egg. This eggs incubates for about 54 days, cared for and carried in a special pouch by both parents. and the ensuing chick is looked after and fed for another 14 to 16 months. During that time, parents take turns hunting for food at sea, and groups of chicks can form a crèche which is looked after by another, unrelated adult. At almost two years old, chicks become fully independent, though they do not mature sexually until 3-5 years of age. King penguins can live up to 25 years in the wild.

Conservation status: The IUCN has rated the king penguin as Least Concern. However, shrinking ice sheets have reduced feeding grounds and breeding colonies, and large reductions in the population are expected in the future.

Penguin symbolism and fish symbolism, unlocked.

Last night, something occurred to me. I can't believe I didn't see it on the first watch.

Typically, at 3am, it hit me.

King penguins mate for life...and we were just shown how Daryl finds out his mate for life, Beth, is alive!

The soft toy seen in the photograph on the boat that Daryl comes across is of a king penguin, specifically.

To start, I thought it was an Emporer penguin, but after looking into the differences (they look very similar) but King penguins are smaller and have yellow beaks and more colour under their necks.

While Emporer penguins have more orange/yellow colouring and not much colour under the necks.

Daryl will first see a photograph of his life mate, Beth!

What does he do next? He gets a hot flame going on, which he cooks and eats a whole fish.

Why is this significant?

It shows the very moment that Daryl Dixon goes from Atheist to believer in God!

The fish represents belief in God, becoming a believer.

After seeing the photograph of his mate for life, he also gets given some idea of where to start looking for her. The voice on the tape recoder gives him a starting point on her location and where she was heading.

Again, after this, he comes to Faith.

Now he's on a journey to find her, which he does...

It's also why Emily has been posting poleroids, heaps of them recently to promote her new album.

Notice she is very deliberately wearing a lot of black and white like a penguin.

It is interesting to note that penguins are flightless birds. In the past, Beth has been connected to birds of flight, like the blue bird. Meaning she will leave and fly away. But now they are connecting her with a flightless bird, meaning when she's back, she's not going anywhere.

@frangipanilove just did an incredible post here about deeper symbolism on the birth of Venus and how a vessel = rebirth, birth, or womb. Well worth reading it!

It's significant because Beth will be re-born (come to life again), and Daryl is born again!

But there's more to the V or womb symbolism in regards to Daryl and Beth becoming parents to a child that will bring a cure. I'll do a separate post for this at some point.

Emily's new album cover for air-conditioning is actually the birth of Venus symbolism. She literally put it right in our face!

I'm a sucker for a good cheesecake! French vanilla is my fave flavour!!

Damien would be more a fruit dessert person, like cherry pie! I think that would be his favourite due to his mother making it and other fruit desserts/pastries often.

🐠 fave aquatic animal 🐠

One of my favourites are brown fur seals, they are super cute and basically puppies of the sea!!

Damien has a soft spot for emporer penguins after a trip to a bubble dimension full of them and a few of the little ones may have followed him around like he was their parent.

🌵 fave cactus or succulent 🌵

I really like Echeveria elegans, I think they're very beautiful and I'd love to have a few in the future!

Damien loves any pink flower cactus, he says they remind him of a plant his mother used to grow in their garden and he has a few littered around the house. He is the designated flower waterer.

🎨 fave art form 🎨

My favourite art form is anything to do with drawing, illustrating, painting, comics, animation, etc. It is my biggest passion and I live all the different methods people can use to tell a story or share a part of themself with the world.

Damien's favourite art form is music, he plays the violin and piano and loves the way you can put your soul into chords and symphonies and he is most at peace listening to music and playing it.

HMMMMMMMMMMMMM I think Ryder says shes doesnt have a favorite animal and needs to be pressed on it, but if you bother her enough she'll say it's the Tailless Whip Scorpion, because ''those fuckers are hilarious'' and she loves the way theyre entirely harmless and just GRAB at you like dorks. I think she;d often gravitate towards ''scary sounding/looking animals/insects who are literally just doing whatever'' like the Camel Spider (chases you like nuts but its bite literally doesnt do anything besides pinch) and the Tailles Whip Scorpion

for Ruyan she might also have a hard time narrowing it down, often because she doesn't really have the concept of a ''favorite'' thing like color or animal or food, there's many things she likes and she feels bad picking a single one, but i think when he grows older he does gain a fondness for sea otters :] Ruyan HATES, HATES, HATES most lovey nicknames because they make her feel wrong, so chefant started calling her his ''signifigant otter'' after seeing a particularly corny greeting card when he got to visit Limsa Lominsa as a joke, but it went from a silly inside joke between them to a nickname Ruyan genuinely really loved and it like, influenced her love for otters because seeing them hold hands or float in the water with their babies just reminds ruyan of her husband, so now if you ask ruyan her favorite animal she'd say sea otter because they remind her of her signifigant otter :]

she also has a particular fondness for maggots in general, specifically the ones commonly used for maggot therapy (DO NOT click if you are sensitive to up front pictures of necrotic / open wounds, or bugs infesting open wounds) -- this means she has a specific love for Blowflies, as she performs maggot therapy and also watches insects like the blowflies and moths consume open flesh routinely. On one notable instance, Hades has even let her use her (named and disinfected) maggots to cleanse an open wound on his leg instead of using aether to heal it, and she has documented her findings on using insects to clean out necrotic tissue. So while she'd never claim that blowflies or cloth moths are her favorite, she does spend the most time caring for these ones :]

cheetah r my toptoptop favourite of the mammals of alll time bcos theyr rly cute and r liek house cats people always mistake them w jaguars cuz apperently the spots look like the same bur accutaly the puma is the most similar one with is kool bcoz pumas are rly cute too !! and ! cheetahs r So. Fast. !!! everyone knkws that but its just so cool they go at their top speed for only 10 secs during a case bcos they could overheat, and so their rly rly smart too so they cam eat !

i rly like penguins too, i usef to have emporer penguins as my top numbr one penguin bcoz of happy feet but i lerndt about the tiny penguins on kangaroo island in australia (their rel name is tiny penguin sisosososo cutw ) and its onlt been a few hiurs but i remember rhey grow upto i think 30cm wuth is the size of like a school ruler anf they jave 3 differnt eyelids to blink w witch is cool i thik

Prompt 26: Shell

The Emperor Mata Penguin

For the shell prompt, I'm sliding up to Just The Zoo of Us episode no. 22, with the animal picks of the Mata Mata Turtle and the Emperor Penguin.

While the Emperor Mata Penguin has a slow time making its way on land, its shell adaptation provides far more protection from predators than its defenseless Emperor Penguin cousins.

Color Vision:

While I have not colored this creature (yet), I envision their coloring is a blend between their respective animal influences, with the Mata Mata shell over the Emporer Penguin and its coloring.
