truly cannot overstate how important it is for everyone to do research into local insect species and just try to notice them when you go outside. there are beautiful metallic blue mud dauber wasps where i live and they’re common in the summer but i just never noticed them until this past year. there are so many dragonflies at the local park. in one walk this june i found ebony jewelwing damselflies and an enormous stinkbug and an emerald-coloured tiger beetle and there is honest to god so much beauty in the insect world if you are willing to look for it

A butterfly (it is apparently a butterfly and not a moth?) flew into my partner’s house recently. I got some ok shots. Half of this one was blurry though, so I cropped it 😅

-->While that was going on, I decided that while Alice was outside indulging her werewolf instincts, she could spread a little feed for the chickens -- while most of them were asleep, there was one hen up and hungry, and Cockadoodle the rooster was getting ready to wake everyone else up, so yeah -- might as well be prepared! She then wandered off to make a clay bunny on the back porch (fortunately avoiding the specter) before I directed her back upstairs to work on her book. THIS time, she was actually able to sit down and concentrate for a while, hooray. May all us writers be so blessed. :p
-->Smiler, for their part, got sent to check in on a yowling Kelly when she appeared on the back porch! Seems mama cat was feeling a little neglected with all the attention being showered on her kittens, so I had Smiler give her lots of calming pets to make sure she knew she was still loved too. :) Smiler then joined Victor in the greenhouse to unleash Bugs and Elmer on the plants, before hitting the cauldron grill to do a bit more herbalism! After all, they'd just gotten a bunch more locusts from Victor earlier this morning to use in their concoctions. :p They made a Soothing Skin Balm, which got them all the way up to Herbalism level 7, meaning they can make Natural Herbicide Oil! :D ...Theoretically, as it once again requires ingredients I don't have. >( I need to get them back to Granite Falls at some point to gather more plants and insects... Anyway, with that sorted, they then moved onto making a lovely yellow-and-orange flower arrangement, which got them to Flower Arranging level 6! Seriously, they were just BANGING out the skills today, let me tell you...
-->Around this time, Moory wandered out of their shed looking a little worse for wear, so I had Alice take a break from her writing to go give the cow a nice brush off. She then headed into the bathroom to give herself a pep talk (she was still feeling Gloomy from earlier), before being put on chicken coop cleaning duty. Smiler, for their part, tried offering the specter the Fizzy Fruity Drink from earlier -- unfortunately, this did not go well either, so I had them just harvest all their herbalism stuff and plasma fruit before going to clean out the cow shed (because, for some reason, the game wouldn't let me clean it magically anymore >( ). Victor, of course, was kept busy tending and harvesting the rest of the garden, because that's what he does around the house these days. XD What can I say, he is the Plant Guy!

04/08/2023-Lakeside evening walk
Photos taken in this set are of: 1. Yellow-haired sun fly on hogweed. 2. Meadow crane's-bill. 3, 4, 8 and 9. Views at Lakeside on a lovely evening walk. 5. Young Black-headed Gull it was nice to see at beach lake again. 6. A splendid female Common Darter on some dock in the meadow by the woods, a captivating sight watching this delicate dragonfly fly and land. One I love seeing at this time of year. 7. Moorhen a bird I saw well today, this a male leading a couple of youngsters along Concorde lake I believe. 10. A chirpy clump of cuckoo-pint beside beach lake which I very much enjoyed seeing.
It was soothing and delightful to hear Great Crested Grebes, Black-headed Gulls, the Common Terns, Lesser Black-backed Gull wailing and other sounds on my Lakeside walks today. I enjoyed seeing the Lesser Black-backed Gull adult and juvenile this evening. I was also thrilled to see a mixed tit flock with certainly Long-tailed Tit and Blue Tit and maybe Great Tit too weaving through thickly vegetated and in places fruit bearing vegetation. A Chiffchaff was good to see a bit further on along the northern path too. Blackbird, Collared Dove, Great Crested Grebes enjoyed again this evening and close views of crows Jackdaw one I enjoyed at lunch time too and Magpie were other bird highlights this evening alongside an elegant Kestrel seen being mobbed by a Jackdaw high over the country park the first Kestrel I'd seen here for a little bit. I also really enjoyed seeing gorgeous Red Admiral, Gatekeeper, a fair few Meadow Brown, Small White and Speckled Wood in one of my last Big Butterfly Counts of the year what a brilliant time I've had doing them here and elsewhere again this year. I was very pleased to see another Hornet Mimic Hoverfly this evening after yesterday's at Winnall Moors with another possibly seen too entertainingly the same day as seeing a hornet. Dock bug and possibly an Ichneumon wasp were other good insects to see in a nice delve into them this evening. St. John's-wort, hemp agrimony, spear thistle and guelder rose berries were other plant highlights this evening. Goldfinch, Woodpigeon, Magpie and House Sparrow were nice birds to see at home today with buddleia and scarlet pimpernel that I admired in the garden.

Well I have just removed what was possibly the largest spider I have ever seen in the UK from my clean hallway, and thought to myself ‘Huh I wonder if house spiders are getting bigger’ so I made the terrible mistake of googling it and:
Tumblr media
Thank you tabloid journalism.
#Arachnophobia tw#Spiders tw#spider tw#insects tw#housekeeping#Earth & Stone#Look I am not a member of the anti-spider brigade#But I have never seen spiders like this#Except in Australia and even then they had the good manners to stay in the Botanic Gardens where they belong#Those who may be contemplating buying a period home please be spider aware#Not just the size but possibly the number; the nooks and crannies that aren't easily accessible; and the height of ceilings when removing#To be fair I think my house is a special case#Not only do I have single glaze sash and case windows#But the common stairwell is very very dusty and possibly hasn't been cleaned since 1965#It's a grey area you see#I'm going to get round to it soon#But because of that (and the weird lack of finishes to flooring and skirting in some parts of the house) the spiders have got out of control#Well#That's not fair#It's their house too#But keeping on top of cobwebs and dust helps to set boundaries#The question is did I just remove a summer interloper or have I just evicted a long-time resident#A spider descended from a long line of spiders who have inhabited this house for at least fifty and possibly even 400+ years#Am I going to face cosmic vengeance for this#And also how the hell did it get in#I assume the open window or the stair#But I just cleaned that hallway yesterday and there was nowhere for it to hide#And it was BIG#Not like those weird spindly dusty spiders that crop up under the skirting#I'm talking nearly the whole length of a plug socket

Had a dream where I was living in some somewhat fantasy setting, kind of like Fablehaven where in the modern world there's magical creatures n witches n shit. I don't remember much of the beginning of that dream, but I think I was at my home when I learned that some evil witch queen is coming and she's going to kill one girl I knew, that I think was a princess but I don't remember if they were related or like, from different kingdoms or whatever. The queen wants her dead so bad she'd kill anyone that tries to protect her. So, of course, I decided to protect the princess, who was during the entire dream completely unaware of what's happening, I'm not sure if she was even conscious, like, she was in some catatonic state. I took the princess to my place, thinking that the queen definitely won't know she's with some random human guy. So the next thing I know the queen invades my home. She was moving around in like this vehicle that looked like a locomotive but with spider legs so it could move anywhere, and the front of it looked like her face, but it was all looking very futuristic or like some mech. And she was followed by an army of either people in futuristic armor or straight up robots. Weirdly enough she didn't kill anyone at my home, though she did drive her spider train through my home's wall. I managed to escape with the princess using some secret tunnels underground. Eventually after running away for super long and events that I unfortunately don't remember, I ended up in some castle ruins with the princess. The queen found me there, but the weird thing was that she wasn't really threatening. I mean she looked scary, her royal gown and crown also had this metallic elements like robot armor or smth, she looked really cool actually, but in a very scary way. But she was kind, and kind of desperate. When she found us in the ruins, she came there alone in her train, and left the vehicle behind her as she approached us. I have this very clear image of me curled up around the princess, protecting her with my body, in some corner, and the queen reaching her hand to me and begging to give her the princess. When I didn't, she summoned some guy to fight me, n it felt very much like I was inside a video game. I had to simultaneously fight the guy off and keep the princess safe from the queen, but at this point I was wondering what even is the deal with them. I've heard the queen was a relentless killer, but she seemed more like a desperate mother whose child was stolen. I never found out what the truth was, though. After I killed the guy she summoned the queen came to me like she wanted to hug me, but I was still too scared of her and didn't let her. I didn't see the princess again, I don't know what happened with her. The queen seemed like she wants to take me with her for whatever reason, but again, I was too afraid and confused and lost. And I woke up so idk what was her deal, but she seemed like such an interesting character. I may adopt her as a new OC and develop her story so that it makes sense

A study that just came out demonstrates that outdoor cats are known to prey on over two thousands species of wild animal, from mammals to birds to insects. That includes 347 species that are endangered, threatened or otherwise of concern, and they've been a key factor of the permanent extinction of over 60 species. And while cats may not always bring home what they catch, chances are if your cat is allowed to roam unsupervised outside, they're killing your local wildlife.
Why is this so important? Worldwide, wild animal populations have decreased in number by 69% in the past fifty years; that means that in my lifetime (born in 1978), the sheer number of wild animals in the world has been decreased by over half. Even "common" wild species are less numerous than before. While habitat population is the single biggest cause of species endangerment and extinction overall, outdoor and indoor/outdoor cats are a significant cause as well. In fact, they are the single biggest cause of human-caused mortality in wild birds.
Most importantly, it's very, very simple to fix this problem: keep your cats indoors, and spay and neuter them. If your cat is bored, they need more enrichment, and there are plenty of ways to make your home more exciting for them, from bringing home cardboard boxes for them to explore, to playing with them more often. If you want your cat to get some outdoor enrichment, leash train them (yes, it can be done!) If you have the space and resources, build them a catio where they can be safe from outdoor dangers like predators and cars, while also keeping local wildlife safe from them.
If you just give into their whining and pawing at the door, then they know that that's what they have to do to get their way; I know it's a tough transition, but it's worth it in the end for everyone involved. Cats are domesticated, which means they are not native anywhere in the world; there are exactly zero ecosystems in which they belong, save for the safety of your home. It is your responsibility to give them an enriching environment without taking the shortcut of letting them go wreak havoc outside.

not my sister explaining to me how cats mate and what their dicks look like, and that dogs have knots bc that was all new knowledge to her, and I'm just sitting there, acting surprised, not knowing how to explain to her that I have an unholy amount of knowledge about various animal's sexual behavior bc not only I've read abo but also written hybrid au fanfics and like any fanfic writer end up doing research to not seem like an idiot about how certain animals mate whether it matters or not to the plot
