The Wales Family in 2023 ♛
So, coronations are less fun than I thought they'd be. Despite that, the coronation gave me some incredibly fun moments, from the Wales family volunteering together to the walkabout on The Mall, from seeing various royal families interacting (including besties Kate and Felipe!) to seeing the Princess of Wales on coronation day itself! In fact, we saw a lot of royal family interaction this year - William and Catherine travelled to Jordan for the wedding of Crown Prince Hussein to Rajwa al Saif, they hosted both the Crown Princely couple of Norway and the Crown Princess couple of Sweden at Windsor Castle, and long-time best buds Catherine and Felipe reunited at the Wimbledon Gentleman's Finals. Sport was another highlight of the year, with the Wales family attending rugby matches (x, x, x), tennis tournaments (x, x, x) and even appearing on a sporting podcast! Both William and Catherine gained several military positions during the year (x, x, x) and have had a go at driving armoured tanks. As well as working with their patronages, William and Catherine have been able to support their own interests. William has continued to promote the Earthshot Prize, and also started Homewards, an anti-homelessness initiative. Catherine, meanwhile, launched the next phase of her early years work with Shaping Us. And in a twist expected by no one, the Princess of Wales finally debuted the Strathmore Rose Tiara. On a personal level, William and Catherine gained a new nephew - little Inigo Middleton - as James and Alizee Middleton welcomed their first child. Next year, I am asking anyone who is listening for a week-long tour (or two!) because they have been sorely lacking this year! If not, I'd love to see William and Catherine continue to flourish in their new roles as Prince and Princess of Wales.

[01:12:55] Shannon’s Euphoria and Something summary
What do you mean Beau became a vampire and Life and Death ended differently? No it didn’t. Right now he’s unfortunately able to relate to trash song Seventeen Forever by Metro Station, because he too is constantly trying to fuck this seventeen year old girl. Fuck you Trace Cyrus! Anyways, Not Like Other Boys Beau doesn’t want to be 18, doesn’t want a birthday party, and super doesn’t want to hear about how his vampire girlfriend, Edythe, wishes she could kill herself! Too bad, so sad Beau. Welcome to the start of book two, where we finally give you a REAL reason for being scared shitless of Jessamine, and all the foreshadowing in this chapter will surely come back to bite you in the ass; one thing you WISH one of these vampires would do already. Hold on tight, king, things are about to get Worse.

Why is Ethan making this face?
LOL! Oh, my sweet friend... you've got it! Enjoy this little drabble! 🖤
Tumblr media
Pairing: Ethan Ramsey x f!OC (Tatum Erikson-Ramsey); Rafael Aveiro x Sienna Trinh-Aveiro
Word Count: 915 (+/-)
Summary: Ethan prepares for a sexy, romantic night with his wife... but unfortunately, he didn't understand the assignment.
Warning: 🔞 For Mature Audiences Only 🔞 language; sexual themes and innuendos
A/N: I am participating in @choicesflashfics week #23 prompt challenge. I will be using prompt #2: "Ignoring the problem will not make it go away." (It will be in bold). Some of these characters and plots belong to our friends at Pixelberry. Also, this is not beta'd; please pardon my errors.
~🖤~
With the shake of his wrist, Ethan glances at his watch. 6:18 PM. Lighting the last candle in the bedroom, he unbuttons his shirt before slipping into a pair of heather-gray joggers.  Tatum would be home any minute, and he wanted to be fully prepared in taking advantage of their night off together.
He looks at her message again.
‘Last patient delivered yesterday. Coming home early. I hope you’re ready for tonight 😘’
A crooked smile grows across his face, his sweatpants growing snug at the thought of the intimate evening he was about to share with his wife.
God, it had been way too long. Tatum had been away most of the week. Monday and Tuesday, she was in Maryland in her annual regulatory meetings with the FDA. Wednesday, she was part of a symposium at Johns Hopkins that was televised to other universities. When she finally made it back Thursday morning, she went straight to work, spending the evening on-call. But luckily, she took this weekend off to spend some much-needed time with her husband and pups.
He hears her keys jingling down the corridor just outside their front door. Ethan quickly shuts off the lights, the illumination from the candles creating the perfect ambiance. He grabs the fresh plate of sushi from the refrigerator before grabbing a long-stem rose he bought on a whim that he knows will make her laugh.
The door begins to open, and Ethan adjusts his pants in excitement. If he knows his wife–and he does– he was about to spring free in less than five minutes.
He leans against the bar, licking his lips with anticipation.
“Ethan?”
God, she’s going to be screaming that name later. He grows harder in anticipation, his pulse racing through his veins as butterflies dance in his belly. Come to daddy, good girl…
“Is Mr. Ethan here?”
Wait a minute. Suddenly, there’s another voice. A little voice. A familiar, little voice.
“He’s supposed to be, Gabi-bug,” Tatum whispers before turning to call out his name again. “Ethan?”
Then there is another voice, a deep baritone. “Why is it so dark in here?”
“Rafie!” Another woman’s timbre softly scolds him.
Without warning, the lights flicker on, catching Ethan off guard. “Rams?” Tatum stumbles in with her bags over her shoulders, awkwardly tittering as she looks around the room. “What are you–oh!” She notices his exposed, sculpted chest with a rose in his hands. “Awww, baby, look at –ohhhh!” She glances down, instantly recognizing her favorite pair of lounge pants…along with the large reason why they are her favorite pair of lounge pants.  And she stifles a toothy grin.
“Mr. Ethan! Mr. Ethan””
“Shit!” Ethan quickly grabs a dish towel, holding it in front of his hips. “Hi, sweetheart.”
Four-year-old Gabriela Trinh-Aveiro bounds into the room–and then freezes the moment she sees Ethan, and her eyes grow large. “Daddy? Mommy? Mr. Ethan said a bad word. And he’s nakie!”
The young couple stumble into the room, assured that they didn’t hear their oldest daughter right. Rafael quickly averts his eyes. “Oh, my apologies Chief Ramsey.”
“I’m so sorry, Dr. Ramsey,” Sienna remorsefully smiles, taking her daughter by the hand; but as she steers her daughter away, the pediatrician accidentally glances back at Ethan. “Ohhh!” She blushes, stopping mid-step. “We, um… are both… uh, very, very–”
“Meu amor!”
“Right! Um…” she titters, her eyes glued to Ethan’s body. “We’ll just… um, how about we’ll just come out here–I mean… wait! I—”
Tatum holds up her hand to stop Sienna before placing it around her petite shoulders. “It’s alright. Just–” she turns back to Ethan, her cheeks swirling to red. “Give us a minute.”
Ensuring that the coast is clear, Tatum turns back to her husband. “What are you doing?” She whisper screams, slapping the back of her fingers against her husband’s arm.
“I… I was getting ready for tonight! Like you said in your message–"
“For Frozen on ice, Ethan! Remember?” Tatum drags her hands down her face. “We bought Gabi the Elsa costume for her birthday along with the tickets?”
“Shit, that’s tonight?”
“No,” she sasses sardonically, “the Aveiros and I thought it would be hilarious to pull your leg.”
Ethan quirks an irritated eyebrow, folding his arms across his chest.
Tatum sighs, stepping closer and giving him a peck on his shoulder. “I’m sorry.. But we really did have plans. Just go throw on a pair of jeans and a nice shirt and–”
“And what am I supposed to do with this?” he gestures to his groin.
Tatum covers her mouth, trying to hold back her laughter. “Doesn’t it just go away if you ignore it?”
“Christ,” he pinches the bridge of his nose, “ignoring the problem will not make it go away, Tatum.”
She snorts. “Well, I can’t exactly do anything right now about the problem.” She leans in, pressing her lips to his mouth. “I promise it will get a lot of attention later. But for now? Um–”
“I’m jumping in a cold shower–”
“Mr. Ethan?”  Gabriela stumbles back into the room, rocking back and forth in her blue, sparkly dress.
Ethan hides behind a counter, forcing a smile on his face. “What is it, sweetheart?”
Gabriela clears her throat, knocking on the wooden cabinets and begins to sing. “Do you want to build a snowman?” She giggles into her cupped hands.
~🖤~
“Gabi-bug,” he sighs, “you have no idea.”
“Ethan!” Tatum chides, rolling her eyes. “Just… let it go.”

Best News of Last Week
Edition #011 - Hope you had a great weekend. Let's read some positive news
1. California enacts law to strip badges from bad officers
California has joined the vast majority of states in setting up a way to strip the badges of police officers who act criminally or with bias, a change that was among several criminal justice reforms signed into law Thursday by Gov. Gavin Newsom.”
"Officers can now lose their certification for serious misconduct including using excessive force, committing sexual assault, intimidating witnesses, making a false arrest or report, or participating in a law enforcement gang."
2. Inventor of Hand-Cranked Washing Machine is Distributing the Low-Cost Device to Refugees
The inventor of a hand-cranked washing machine has travelled to Iraq to distribute the low-cost device to refugees.
Navjot Sawhney created the Divya to allow those living in poverty to be able to wash their clothes more easily. He said the two-week trip to northern Iraq to hand out the machines has been a "completely humbling experience".
"To give them the dignity of clean clothes is very fulfilling," said the former University of Bath student.
3. Ocelots rescued from traffickers returned to wild in Ecuador
Tumblr media
Six ocelots rescued from illegal wildlife traffickers have been returned to the wild in northern Ecuador, the environment ministry said on Saturday.
"They released six female ocelots (Leopardus pardalis) in the Cotacachi Cayapas Reserve," near the border with Colombia, it said in a statement. "All the specimens returned to their natural habitat after a rehabilitation period of approximately one year."
4. CRISPR Gene-Editing Experiment Partly Restores Vision In Legally Blind Patients
“On Wednesday, researchers revealed the first evidence that the approach appears to be working — improving vision for at least some patients with the condition, known as Leber congenital amaurosis, or LCA, a severe form of vision impairment.
"It's a really amazing technology and very powerful," says Dr. Mark Pennesi, professor of ophthalmology at the Casey Eye Institute at the Oregon Health & Science University. He presented the results at an International Symposium on Retinal Degeneration in Nashville, Tenn.”
Imagine being the person who had their sight partially restored. You have what you believe is a life sentence and one day you get your sight back, and if you never had it at all what an overwhelming experience to witness a beautiful sunset for the first time. I would just travel around seeing cool things for like a year. What an awesome story.
5. Rare Arabian leopard cub is born, raising hopes for the species’ survival
Tumblr media
“The birth of an Arabian leopard cub in Saudi Arabia is fuelling hope for the survival of one of the world’s most critically endangered animals.
The Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU) has just announced that the female cub was born on April 23 at the Arabian Leopard Breeding Center in Taif, Saudi Arabia.”
6. Orlando school elects its first transgender homecoming queen
"It made me feel like I actually belonged," Bialosuknia said. "Not just like a joke. Cause that was one of my fears, I was in bed one night like, 'What if they were just doing this to laugh at me?'"
Bialosuknia is 17, and in her first year living the way she wants and feels. Just a few months ago, she started her transition.
"I still have a long way to go and more change is coming," she said.

Bottled Up
pairing: C.H. x fem!reader
category: angst, fluff
warnings: yelling, crying, insecurities
word count: 2.2k
notes: apologies for the tardy post, i wrote and rewrote and re-rewrote the whole angsty scene because i didn’t know if it was written well enough, i wanted to make sure you guys could feel the emotions that i vividly visualised and tried my best to put into words  :( i did send it to a friend to check and she seemed to like it, so let me know how it goes for you, my loves. the angst for this one was inspired by 2 different songs - hold me while you wait by lewis capaldi and i will run from you by cemeteries. it’s not necessarily about the lyrics, but more about the melody and the mood you get into listening to them (they go in order). give those a listen :) also, beware of the upcoming philosophy references, i did study philosophy last year, hopefully no one gets triggered lmao

Is a person’s scent something a normal human being picks up on before taking into account the rest of their features? Would a normal human being remember said scent and be able to recognise it in a crowd full of strangers? Corpse wasn’t too sure about the answer, but one thing he did know, is that she smelled delicately sweet, like cherry blossoms, and that ever since he had noticed it during their game night a few weeks ago, he simply couldn’t let it go. It was intoxicating, but in a calming way.
Corpse and (Y/N) each lay on their beds in their own homes, going into the third hour of their call. He couldn’t exactly fall asleep, so he had decided to see what his dear friend was up to, and even though she was this close to succumbing to sleep, she said nothing and stayed up to keep his busy mind company.
“Okay, hot topic: what do you think about soulmates? More specifically the romantic type?” the girl asked, not knowing how much of a risqué question it was. How was he supposed to answer?
“I don’t really have an opinion on it. Why?”
“I read Symposium by Plato the other day and it presented an interesting concept about human beings. Basically-” Of course she fucking read philosophical books. How were they even having a conversation with each other? Why were they even friends? She was on a whole other level of smart. “-so this guy says that humans were like androgynous blobs, so they’d come in two sets of everything a normal person has. But those humans were so powerful, the gods were literally shaking in their robes, so Zeus decided to cut everyone into two to weaken them. But then humans became so miserable, they spent their entire lives searching for their other halves. In the end, Zeus kinda felt bad and said fuck it, I’ll give y’all dicks and vaginas for every time you wanna hug each other. And that’s the oldest explanation there is about the idea of soulmates.” she sighed, finished with her rant.
“That was...not at all the story I expected to hear.” she heard him mumble on the other side of the call. “Yeah, Greek philosophers were up to some reeal freaky things, you would have loved them,” he laughed at her joke, “I honestly think it’s cute. Not the whole cutting people into two thing, but like, longing for someone and then finding them because you finally feel complete. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a strong independent woman who doesn’t need a prince in shining whatever to sweep me off my feet. But it does sound nice, that ideal comfort, a person you’re just...meant to be with, I guess.”
There was a moment of silence that neither of them really minded, before it was Corpse’s turn to ask the second bold question of the night. “Have you found that person yet? Your soulmate?”
She’s never thought about it before, but she hasn’t really thought about soulmates that much either, it was a spontaneous thought she had said out loud. “I’m not sure, actually. (B/F/N) could be one, I guess.” (Y/N) shrugged in return. Wasn’t she going to ask him about it? She probably didn’t care that much. Understandable.
“My favourite quote about love is «You come to love not by finding the perfect person, but by seeing an imperfect person perfectly.». It’s by Sam Keen, the American philosopher. It maay be the hopeless romantic in me shining through, but I do very much agree with his statement.” Did this mean anyone could have a chance with her despite their fuckups? So if he were to try, would she-?
“Obviously, there are some things that just can’t be ignored or avoided, but at that point it’s preferences and personal tolerance. Depends on the person, ya know?” she swiftly added, unaware of the effect it had on him. Sick. Some people were just meant to rot alone.
The final question was posed by (Y/N). She’d be lying if she said she wasn’t at all curious. This little crush of hers had been steadily growing with every hang out, every laugh, every hug and every glance. There are rarely ever moments where one could casually discuss a topic this personal with friends, at least there weren’t with friends one had feelings for. This was the perfect opportunity.
“Corpse?”
“Hmm?”
“Have you ever been in love?” her voice was soft, her approach gentle.
“Well, I’ve been in relationships before, so I guess, yeah? It’s been so long, I don’t even know what love feels like anymore.” he let out a breath resembling a chuckle. Lamest fucking answer ever. But it was true. He hadn’t thought about love in that way in quite a while.
“A lot of people describe it as having an intense range of overwhelming feelings. Lightheadedness, slight shakiness, heart palpitations, some people have even reported losing their appetite. Crazy how human bodies work, huh? Oh! Speaking of chemicals-”
She had continued on to ramble about...chemistry? Eyes? Corpse couldn’t really hear what she was saying anymore, let alone concentrate on her words, as he pieced everything that’s been happening for the past few months together. The nauseating feeling. The pounding of his heart so fast it felt like he was about to die. The urge to make as little eye contact with her as possible, because otherwise he’d turn into a furnace. The obsession with her perfume, like he was some fucking creep. The fool was falling in love. And it was at that moment that everything had come crumbling down.
(Y/N) and Corpse hadn’t talked for a couple of weeks. Or rather (Y/N) messaged the 23 year old many times, but he’d either claim to be busy or just not answer at all. There were two possible reasons for the sudden lack of contact: he was indeed busy with his musical projects and couldn’t allow himself to be distracted; or something much more serious was going on. It didn’t matter, for she was already in her car, on her way to his apartment.
Arriving at her destination, she used the spare key he gave her months ago, a sign of absolute trust, and allowed herself into his humble abode. Silence reigned in her friend’s residence. She thought maybe he had gone somewhere, and though that was unlikely, it wasn’t unprecedented. The door to his recording room was closed, and while she was tempted to check if he was in there, she refrained from doing so, knowing that specific room was not to be entered unless he was around to give permission.
“Corpse?” she called out just to make sure. There was no response for a few minutes, which made her assume she had the place for herself, until she heard a door open behind her. Turning around, she saw his figure emerge from said recording room in a white t-shirt and black sweatpants, his curly hair disheveled.
“Hey, how are you d-”
“Why are you here?” he spoke flatly, interrupting her. “Well- You weren’t, um, answering your messages or any of my calls, so I thought something had happened.” she replied, suddenly nervous, fiddling with the rings on her fingers. “Nothing happened. I told you I was busy.”
The air around them seemed colder as tensions rose. (Y/N) could tell he was irritated, but she couldn’t exactly figure out why. She had never seen this side of him before. “Okay. Tell you what, I assume you haven’t had dinner yet, so why don’t I go ahead and start cooking something up while you-”
“Get out.”
She blinked a few times, not quite registering the words that had just left his mouth. “Sorry?” Her voice was quiet. She was taken off guard.
“Are you deaf? I said get. the fuck. OUT.”
Corpse shouted the last word, making her flinch in what appeared to be fear. Good. Run away while you still can. Heart pounding, (Y/N) took a second to remind herself whom she was speaking to. “I see that you’re angry, but at least give me a reason why-”
“You want a reason? I just don’t fucking WANT you here!” Anger grew inside of him like a tumor, but it wasn’t intended for her. She had simply been caught in a storm that had been building up for years. “Do you understand that?! I can’t fucking be around you without feeling like I’m going to EXPLODE.”
His words hit her like paintballs. They were only words, plain and simple, but they dug deeper and deeper into her skin with each hit, until, eventually, it broke. Eyes burning, she felt the tears slowly welling up in them.
“Why are you doing this to me?!” her own voice grew louder with frustration, but mostly, confusion.
“Maybe because I can? Because I’m a goddamn asshole?”
“Don’t say that.”
“How?! How can I not say it when it’s the truth!” He wanted to stop. His mind told him to cease whatever it was that he was doing. However, blinded with resentment towards himself, he only spilled words he would regret after it was too late.
“I can’t function like a normal fucking human being. I can’t be a good friend, son, or whatever the fuck else, and I sure as hell can’t love you.”
The paintballs had turned into a singular sword. A very long, very sharp sword that had found itself plunged deep inside her chest. How did he found out? When? Had she been too obvious? Had she been pushy? Clingy? Way out of line? The woman before him was unable to conceal her shock, as tears came rushing down her hot cheeks. Her voice brittle, she tried defending herself. She couldn’t leave it at that. She had to try. Try to have him see reason. “You don’t love me, that’s fine. But you didn’t have to deliver it this way-”
“But I did.” breathless with fury, Corpse clenched his fists so tight they had turned cold, yet they were still trembling. “You can get so naïve and dumb, you won’t understand things unless they’re spelled out nice and fucking bold for you.”
He closed with (Y/N) until their noses nearly touched. He noticed the way she silently shook, her eyes which shed endless tears never leaving his gaze. Unable to make a single sound, she felt the man’s hot breath on her face, his aura domineering.
“Now get. out.”
Her body wouldn’t cooperate as she just stood there. Staring back at him, her inner brows raised. Corpse wanted to hug her. Envelop her trembling figure with his and tell her he was sorry, that he meant none of it, that he had lost his mind. But he couldn’t bring himself to do anything. And with his own tears threatening to spill, he created a distance between them. He needed her gone.
“Leave! GO!”
His yelling was enough to jolt (Y/N) out of her trance, and, in a hurry, she sprinted towards the entrance. The door closed behind her, she felt a sudden urge to fill her lungs with much needed air. She jumped at the resounding scream that emanated from deep within his soul, letting out all of his pent-up rage.
Feet carrying her all the way to her car parked outside of the building, the young woman managed to climb in, and this was the queue for her body to break down. The night was young. The street empty. No one around to hear her long-lasting wailing. She clutched the steering wheel for support, fingers wrapping around the leather in a tight grip. A headache was creeping up from the back of her skull. Her ears pulsated in response to the heavy pounding of her heart. Clumsily, (Y/N) inserted the key into the ignition, felt around for the gear stick, and drove away. She didn’t know where she was going or how long it was going to take to get there. She needed to get out.
What went wrong? When did it go wrong? She couldn’t help but feel guilty, feel at fault. She had never seen that side of him before. He had never treated her that way before.
It was the hugs, wasn’t it? He had to have noticed the way she held on for a second too long to enjoy the smell of his cologne. Her vision blurred as she resumed softly weeping, her salty tears staining her top. Or it might have been the touchiness, she would practically glue herself to him during their movie nights. Unaware of both her actions and surroundings, (Y/N)’s breathing quickened, becoming ragged. Maybe he didn’t like the way she called him three times a week. Her hands were slowly losing control over the wheel, over the vehicle she was driving. She invaded his privacy. That was definitely it. Fuck. How could she have been so damn blind, selfish, ignorant, FUCKING STUPID.
Lights. Something was moving towards her- MOVE.
With a sharp turn, she dodged the approaching car just by a hair’s breadth, but as she had avoided one accident, another came just as quickly.

Character Introduction: Plato
Plato -
Age: 23 (24)
Ability: The Symposium
Physical Appearance: Dark, thick, curly black hair with russet brown strands, olive skin, hazel green eyes, eternally pensive look, 177cm (about 5’10”), 60kg (about 132 pounds)
Personality: neurotic, a bit unhinged, taxed, not okay at all, can be described as brash, sporadic, and needlessly cruel, but on his good days, he’s a person that suffers from malnourishment
Profession: Office Assistant (on good days)
Little Tidbits:
- Plato doesn’t do much except paperwork, and it doesn’t help that his brain won’t shut off for long enough for him to be half as efficient as everyone else
- He forgets to eat quite frequently, to the point where someone would have to sit him down so that he could eat
- He does take medication for those hard nights, but it muddles everything up rather than putting him to sleep
- (Wait, did I mention that he almost never sleeps? The voices don’t give a fuck about their master, that’s for sure.)
- He has a long way to go in terms of controlling his ability; it was wrongly diagnosed as schizophrenia when he was a kid
- So the issue here is that at this point in his life, his ability is mostly unmanageable and negatively impacts his life in a way to renders him unable to function without serious help
- A way that this is alleviated is by an emotional support chicken, a chicken that Diogenes keeps eating

Chapter 23: Whatever it Takes, Pt 1
David entered the kitchen that morning, after he finished getting ready for work, only to see his wife at the stove.
"Wow...omelets on a weekday?" he asked, as he put his arms around her waist and kissed her neck.
"Well...you have a busy day ahead being a sleuthing accountant. You need your energy...especially after last night," she purred.
"Yeah...it was pretty amazing," he agreed, as she put the eggs on five plates and then turned around in his arms, so they could kiss properly. They slowly swayed together and then pressed their foreheads together once their lips parted.
"Besides...you don't know how much it means to me that I have my husband and my son back and how much I love taking care of my family," she said, as he kissed her again.
"I know...and I promise we're not going anywhere ever again, my love," he promised, as Emma and the kids came into the kitchen.
"It's way too early for romance, you two," she grumbled, as she went for the coffee.
"You just hate mornings," Margaret mentioned, as she delivered the plates to everyone at the table.
"Ohh omelets...you're forgiven," Emma said, as she started eating with the kids, while David and Margaret sat down with them.
"So...how was date night?" she asked.
"Wonderful...but it was sort of a working date night," David replied.
"What does that mean?" Emma asked.
"Well...when I was digging at my new job, I learned that Unified Dynamic Systems is one of the clients at JP Williamson. UDS is funding something known as the Singularity Project, which is the research of this woman," David replied, as he showed her an image on his tablet.
"A passenger?" Emma asked.
"Yes...one that was studying something called mirror neurons. It's a fringe study that believes there are ways for human brains to link up collectively," Margaret explained.
"Uh...that sounds familiar," Emma said.
"We thought so too...so we cornered her after her symposium and questioned her about the missing passengers. But I don't think she knows anything about that," David replied.
"And you believe her?" Emma asked skeptically. He shrugged.
"She agreed to try to find out more information about her funding source, especially since it looks like they may be using her research to experiment on unwilling victims," David replied.
"I believed her too...trust me, she would be in bad shape if I thought she had anything to do with the plane's disappearance," Margaret assured. Emma snorted in amusement.
"Yeah...she'd be in a body cast right about now," she teased.
"Well…I'm protective of the people I love," Margaret said, as she kissed her husband, before gathering their plates.
"What about you? I heard you made a big arrest. It's all over the news," David mentioned.
"Uh yeah...we got that guy that killed the brother of the owner of Darkstar Pharmacy," Emma replied.
"Good...that was so sad and a little too close to home," Margaret mentioned quietly. It was not lost on any of them that Ruth had been killed in a similar type situation.
"Yeah...something else happened too. It was a Calling," she mentioned. Margaret turned off the water and sat back down with them.
"You didn't tell us that part," she said.
"It just happened," she pointed out.
"Anyway...when I was around the store owner, I kept hearing this heartbeat. Long story short...I found out that Tom Clark had a heart transplant almost six years ago…" Emma said, as she looked them in the eyes.
"It was Lily's," she said, causing Margaret to gasp and David looked at his son.
"Hey buddy...where's that drawing you were working on?" David asked. Henry dug through his backpack and produced the illustration of a man with a heart on his chest.
"That...looks like Tom Clark," Emma replied.
"And you helped catch his brother's killer," Margaret said in amazement.
"That's not all I helped him with. He was going to take justice into his own hands...but I convinced him not to, identify the killer, and let the justice system take over," Emma replied, as Margaret squeezed her hand.
"Then that's more confirmation that these Callings are doing something good," she said.
"I don't know MM…" Emma replied.
"I mean...even if they are good…" she said.
"I mean...what is this?" she added in frustration.
"I don't know...but we will figure this out. All of it," David assured them both. With that, they quickly cleaned up and started the day.
~*~
Emma arrived at the station and sat down at her desk, only to look up and see Killian standing there with a bakery sack in his hand.
"Picked up an extra bear claw," he mentioned.
"Uh...thanks," she replied, as she accepted the bag and he leaned against her desk.
"So...how's Henry?" he asked.
"He seems to be fine for the moment. We're keeping a close eye on him," she replied.
"But you don't think this is over?" he asked.
"Do you?" she asked, with a raised eyebrow.
"Honestly Emma...I have no idea. I mean...it's pretty out there," he mentioned.
"Yeah...that's what I thought too at first. But then it happens to you and it gets real, no matter how out there it seems," she said.
"I mean...last night, our victim's brother in this latest case just happened to be the recipient of Lily's heart? That's some out there stuff, but it happened," she reasoned. He sighed.
"Yeah...that was pretty wild," he agreed.
"Which means, whether I like it or not, these things that are happening to passengers are real and something," she said. He nodded.
"Fair enough...so what now?" he asked. She shook her head.
"I'm not sure...my brother is playing his own version of detective at his new job, so I guess we wait to see what he turns up and pray he's not discovered," he replied.
"Ah…I knew there had to be more to that. Your brother is way overqualified for a low level accounting clerk," he said.
"Yeah and from what I've heard his boss probably has an IQ that's half my brother's, so it shouldn't be too hard for David to find whatever he's looking for," she replied, as he sat down at his desk and they worked on the recent paperwork from the previous night's case.
~*~
After dropping Henry off with her father-in-law, Margaret arrived at her classroom that morning.
"Ms. Nolan?" a voice called, as a man peered into her classroom.
"Yes, can I help you?" she asked.
"I'm Sidney Glass...from the New York Times," he replied. She sighed.
"A reporter," she muttered.
"Yes...and I'm sure that doesn't make you feel comfortable at all," he said.
"You mean because a dozen other reporters at your paper have run hit pieces on me and my family for the last week?" she asked. He nodded.
"I understand that...but that is not my intention. No one has really told the story from your side," he replied.
"And why should I trust you?" Margaret replied, as she crossed her arms over her chest.
"You have no reason to...I get that. But this would be an opportunity to tell yours and your husband's story. I'd even let you read it before I publish," he offered.
"David and I don't care what people think of us...we never have," she said.
"Fair enough...but in case you change your mind, here is my card," Sidney said, as he set it on her desk and quietly left. She scoffed, as she looked at the card and then stuffed it in her purse, forgetting about it.
~*~
Upon arriving at work that morning, David sailed through the stack of work left for him on his desk with ease. This job was not challenging at all, but then that wasn't really the reason he was there. He took the stack and walked into his boss' office and he wasn't sure what Doc was doing on his computer, but he doubted it was work.
"Oh hey...828," he greeted, as David put the stack on his desk.
"Done already?" he asked and David shrugged.
"What can I say? Numbers are my thing," David replied, as another man stuck his head inside the door.
"Hey...are we still on for the game tonight?" he asked.
"Of course...hey Billy, this is David. You know, the guy from that plane," Doc said, as David shook hands with the tall African American man.
"Nice to meet you...man, what a story," he said.
"Yeah…I get that a lot," David replied.
"This is Billy from IT," Doc said.
"Nice to meet you," David replied.
"Hey numbers guy...do you play poker?" Doc asked.
"Yeah...we could use one more tonight," Billy agreed. While he loathed the thought of not going home to his family the moment the day was over, he knew how valuable it could be to persuade an IT guy to unknowingly let him in the backdoor and straight to the files on the Singularity Project.
"Sounds great," David agreed.
"Great," Doc said, as he patted him on the shoulder.
"Until then...maybe you can help me out with these, but don't tell anyone," Doc said, as he gave him another stack and his own badge since these had a higher clearance. David smirked.
"Don't worry...I'll get these done and you can have all the credit," he replied, as he returned to his desk. He didn't know what else he could find, if anything, but he knew that accessing the backdoor through the IT guy might yield even more results.
~*~
Mr. Gold entered Vance's office, only to interrupt him with another man, whom Gold recognized as one of his senior agents.
"Mr. Gold...please join us," Vance said.
"This is Special Agent Arthur King. He was just delivering some very interesting Intel," Vance said. Mr. Gold ignored the agent, but nodded curtly to Vance.
"You mean the Intel where David Nolan has just been hired on at an accounting firm for a job that he is ridiculously overqualified for?" Gold asked.
"How do you know that?" Agent King asked suspiciously.
"I have my ways, Agent King...but I do not think Mr. Nolan has ill intentions," Gold replied.
"More hero talk?" Vance questioned.
"He seems to be taking that role...yes and he may be the keystone to breaking all of this wide open," Gold replied.
"Or he could be committing corporate espionage," Arthur countered.
"David Nolan is not our enemy. In fact...I believe our enemy is within," Gold said.
"Are you accusing a government agency of being behind the disappearance of this plane?" King questioned with an edge in his voice. Gold smirked.
"Oh no, Agent King...but I am pointing out that there are those within that may not have the passenger's best interests at heart," he added.
"These people may be a threat to National Security," Arthur pointed out.
"They don't know what happened to them, Agent King. They are in the dark as much as we are. Locking them up will yield no answers," Gold warned.
"This guy is a crackpot," Arthur hissed to his boss.
"Mr. Gold's insight is valuable...but we will monitor Mr. Nolan's activities. Bug his phone," Vance ordered. Arthur seemed appeased by that and quickly left.
"He's a hothead...and not in a good way," Gold mentioned.
"He's a good agent," Vance countered.
"If Nolan does commit espionage...I can't ignore it," Vance warned.
"Perhaps not...but arresting him will get you nothing. In fact, it may cost lives if you do," Gold warned in return. Vance was silent at that, contemplating his words.
~*~
"It's okay, baby...this sounds like an opportunity you can't pass up," Margaret said, as she put the groceries away while talking to him on speaker phone.
"I know...I just hate getting home late. But if I can get a way into this account through the backdoor, I might be able to get a location or something," David said.
"I hate it too...but I know you're doing this for Henry. I'll feed the kids and wait to eat with you," she said.
"Thanks...but you don't have to do that," he replied.
"I know...but I want to," she said.
"Then I can't wait. I'll see you soon and I love you," he replied. She smiled.
"I love you too," she gushed, as they hung up and she saw their son come into the house with her father-in-law.
"Hey sweetie...did you have a good day with Grandpa?" she asked.
"Yeah...we had lots of fun," Henry replied, as she hugged him and she and Robert shared a smile.
"But I was wondering…" Henry said.
"Wondering what?" she asked.
"When can I go back to school?" he asked.
"Oh...well, we want to make sure you're out of the woods from that most recent scare, honey," she replied.
"I know...but I feel fine now and Dad is trying to find out where those missing passengers are, right?" Henry asked. She smiled.
"He is...and we can talk about school more later, I promise," she replied, as he went upstairs.
"I know David is doing what he needs to...but corporate espionage is no joke if he gets caught," Robert said in a worried tone.
"I know...I'm worried too, but David thinks this might be the only way to save Henry and those missing passengers," Margaret replied. He nodded.
"And there will be no stopping him," Robert said. She smiled softly.
"You know David...always the hero," she said fondly.
"That's our David," he agreed.
"Do you want to stay for dinner and eat with the kids?" she asked. He smiled.
"You know I'd love that," he replied.
~*~
David entered the conference room, which had been turned into an after hours poker game. He was not looking forward to this at all, but he put a smile on and was introduced to the other players that he had not met yet.
"So 828...were the aliens at least hot?" one guy asked and the others busted up laughing. David forced a chuckle and shook his head.
"No...but then there's only one woman for me and she's right here on Earth," he replied.
"Dude...your wife isn't here. You don't actually have to say that stuff," Doc said.
"I say it because it's true," David replied.
"Don't mind Doc...he can't get a woman to save his life," Billy joked, as he dealt the cards.
"Very funny," Doc said.
"So David...he tells me you're a numbers guy?" Billy asked.
"A Master's in mathematics. I did a bit of coding in college, but ultimately decided to teach instead," David replied.
"So you know some coding?" Billy asked.
"It's been a long time...I probably need a refresher," David replied.
"I could help with that...if you're interested. Doc says that you're bored," Billy said.
"Actually yeah...that would be great," David replied.
"After you finish tomorrow's work load," Doc instructed, as they picked up their cards.
"So...that should be about nine in the morning," David said, as they all laughed. Getting in with the IT guy had been easier than he thought…
~*~
As Margaret waited for David to get home, the kids watched a movie and she found herself walking down memory lane in the form of one of her many photo albums. She flipped the page and smiled at the photo of them on their wedding day. She remembered that day so well, for it had been one of the happiest days of her life.
~*~
Flashback
"Wow...you look like a fairytale Princess for sure," her friend and one of her bridesmaid's, Ruby, said.
"Well…I'm marrying my Prince Charming so I should," Margaret replied, as Abigail adjusted her veil.
"Are you ready?" Emma asked, as she stepped forward. Her future sister-in-law and best friend was her maid of honor, of course. Margaret smiled.
"I've wanted to marry David since we were eight. I can't wait…" she replied. Emma smiled.
"Neither can he. He's been telling everyone he was going to marry you since then too, so let's finally make it official already," Emma said, as Robert poked his head in.
"Ready?" he asked. Emma nodded, as he came into the room.
"You look beautiful, Margaret and I already considered you my daughter," he said, making her smile.
"I know that I was a terrible father to my kids and you were what helped them both get through some very rough times. I can never repay you for that and when you asked me to walk you down the aisle, I was blown away," he admitted.
"You made mistakes and struggled with your own demons, but you got better and we forgive you. Even at your worst, you were more of a father to me than my own ever was," she said, as he offered his arm and she hooked her hand on his elbow.
By then, the music had intensified. Her bridesmaid's and Emma were already at the altar and everyone stood, as they exited the small garden house and outside into the beautiful garden where they had chosen to have their wedding. It was near the wooded area and the bridge they had frequented for years. They had played in this garden and park for years, so getting married here seemed perfect.
David was in awe, as she floated toward him like an angel, carrying a bouquet of snowdrops, much like the ones he had picked for her when they were children. Even then, the idea of marrying her was firm in his young mind and now that the moment was finally here, he knew that his life was complete with her by his side. The ceremony was a mere formality, for they had bonded their lives together long ago…
~*~
"That was an amazing day," he mentioned and she looked up, finding him leaning over her.
"You're home...I was so absorbed by the memory of this day that I didn't hear you come in," she mentioned, as he kissed her tenderly.
"It was one of the best days of my life," he said, as he squeezed into the chair with her.
"Mine too," she agreed, as they shared another kiss.
"Did you find anything?" she asked.
"Not yet...but the IT guy promised to show me some coding. If I can manage to get in the backdoor to the account of the Singularity Project, I'm hoping I can find something like a location or more names," he replied. She smiled and kissed him again.
"I know you will...you're our hero, after all," she said, as she rested her head on his shoulder and they gazed upon their kids fondly.

Weekly Recap | September 30th-October 6th
Tumblr media
I wrote this while waiting for my flight at the airport! 😆 This is the last Weekly Recap before my departure and I don’t know when the next one will come, so enjoy it! :P
~
Complete
it’s a date by liionne/ @liionne (Modern AU | 11k | Teen): Bucky Barnes has been advised to get a puppy to help get him back into civilian life. Steve Rogers runs the local dog shelter that Bucky visits. Drama ensues.
💙 Not In That Way by onymousann (Post-Endgame | 31,5K | Not rated): “I think— I want to stay. After the jump. I want to stay.” Or, Steve’s epic stupidity and bad decision-making have unintended consequences.
the turning by birdjay/ @bird-jay (Vampires AU | 10K | Teen): “I’m two hundred and sixty three years old,” Bucky says, on a breath. He closes his eyes, and keeps talking. “I don’t have to breathe, I don’t have to sleep, and my heart doesn’t beat. I don’t get sick, nor do I age.” Bucky opens his eyes, and they meet Steve’s hard enough to pin him to his seat. “What do you think I am?” Steve’s mind is reeling. He knows what it sounds like Bucky is, but...but it can’t be true. Such creatures do not exist. Have never existed. They are simply not possible. “Go ahead,” Bucky says, with the air of someone who has all day, and doesn’t mind waiting. “I know you know.”
First Anniversary by lockedlocke (Modern AU | 7,8K | Explicit): Steve lays down beside him under the covers, and cuddles up to Bucky. Sliding his arm around the Bucky’s waist, he brushes the soft skin behind Bucky's ear as he presses a kiss against him. “Happy anniversary,” Steve whispers to him in a sing-song voice, trailing off a little. Bucky starts to smile. (Part 2 of I just need you to show me)
enemy of mine, i'll fuck you like the devil by voxofthevoid/ @voxofthevoid (PWP | 7,8K | Explicit | CW: Rape fantasy): “Agent Barnes,” the man says, voice deep and rumbling. “It’s good to finally meet you.” There’s so much drama in that one line that Bucky can’t hold back a smile. “Of course it is,” he says lightly. “I’m a hot commodity these days.” First meetings imagined anew and fantasies given flesh. (Part 3 of 💙 i'm guilty of treason (i've abandoned control))
He Used to Be Mine by betheflame/ @betheflame (Bakery AU | 21K | Mature): Steve and Bucky were it for each other, until life happened. Now, nearly 20 years later, they meet again. Bucky's boyfriend is an abusive jagweed, however, so Steve has some work to do. Love, however, might be complicated, but it always wins.
WIP
💙 Cause you can’t, you won’t, and you don’t stop by redhook (FWB | 2/? | 4,4K | Explicit): It isn’t like they’re actually fucking or anything. It’s fine.
💙 Sex With Benefits by verzacefatale/ @verzacefatale (Modern AU, FWB | 2/? | 6,6K | Explicit): Bucky makes a movement that encompasses the ehness of banging dudes and hooking up with friends. “It’s not that big a deal. We’ll fuck, then eat pizza and watch Real Housewives of Rhode Island. You can be an honorary homo.”
Three Days of the Greater North-Eastern Annual Vampire Symposium and Everything In Between by verzacefatale/ @verzacefatale (Canon divergent, Vampires, Fake relationship | 1/6 | 3,1K | Explicit): “Vampires… are real.” Although he sounds shocked, Steve doesn’t look it. Saint of the Day – 23 September – St Thecla (1st century) Virgin and Martyr, Disciple of St Paul. Patronage – of Tarragona in Catalonia (Spain), where the cathedral has a chapel dedicated to her.   Her feast day remains the town’s major local holiday.
Tumblr media
The Acts of Paul and Thecla is a 2nd-century text (circa AD 180) which forms part of the Acts of Paul but also circulated separately.   According to the text, Thecla was a young noble virgin from Iconium who listened to Paul’s “discourse on virginity”, espoused the teachings and became estranged to both her fiancé and her mother.   She sat by her window for three days, listening to St Paul and his teachings.   When they witnessed this, they became concerned that Thecla would follow Paul’s demand “one must fear only one God and live in chastity” and turned to the authorities to punish both Paul and Thecla.
Tumblr media
Thecla was miraculously saved from burning at the stake by the onset of a storm and travelled with Paul to Antioch of Pisidia.   There, a nobleman named Alexander desired Thecla and attempted to rape her.   Thecla fought him off, tearing his cloak and knocking his coronet off his head in the process.   She was put on trial for assault.   She was sentenced to be eaten by wild beasts but was again saved by a series of miracles, when the female beasts (lionesses in particular) protected her against her male aggressors. While in the arena, she baptised herself by throwing herself into a nearby lake full of aggressive seals.
Tumblr media
She rejoined the Holy Apostle Paul in Myra, travelled to preach the word of God and became an icon encouraging women to imitate her by living a life of chastity and following the word of the Lord.   She went to live in Seleucia Cilicia.   According to some versions of the Acts, she lived in a cave there for 72 years.   As she became a healer, the Hellenistic physicians in the city lost their livelihood and solicited young men to attempt to spoil her virginity at the age of 90.   She called out to God and a new passage was opened in the cave and the stones closed behind her.   She was able to go to Rome and lie down beside Paul’s tomb.
Tumblr media
The Church Fathers recount a number of traditions about Thecla.   St Gregory of Nyssa writes in the 4th century (Homily 14 in Cant) that she undertook the sacrifice of herself, by giving death to the flesh [Gal 5:24], practising great austerities, extinguishing in herself all earthly affections, so that nothing seemed to remain living in her but reason and spirit – the whole world seemed dead to her as she was to the world [Gal 6:14]. Macarius Magnes shortly after AD 300 wrote how the message of Christianity was “the Sword, [Matt 10:34] which cuts relations from each other [Matt:10:35], as it cut Thecla from Theocleia.” [Apocriticus ii.7].   Around AD 280, Thecla features as one of the characters in Methodius of Olympus’ Symposium, in which we learn that she was well versed in philosophy and various branches of literature, of eloquent yet modest discourse.   He says that she received her instruction in divine and evangelical knowledge from Paul and was eminent for her skill in sacred science (“Logos 8”).
Tumblr media
The martyrdom of Thecla is frequently referred to in the earliest Acts of the Martyrs. Eugenius, a martyr of Trebizond under Diocletian (284–305), couples Thecla with David and Daniel in his prayers.   The exordium of the Acts of Polyeuctes [d. 259] refers to Thecla and Perpetua and there were certainly many virgin martyrs who drew their first inspiration from the same source.   Eugenia of Rome in the reign of Commodus (180–192) is reported in the Acts of her martyrdom to have taken Thecla as her model.
In June 2010, on a wall of the Catacomba di Santa Tecla in Rome, Vatican archaeologists of the Pontifical Commission for Sacred Archaeology, using laser technology to remove layers of clay and lime rind, discovered a frescoed portrait of St Paul the Apostle, “recognisable by his thin face and dark pointed beard…with small eyes and furrowed brow,” which they believe is the oldest image in existence of Paul, dating from the late 4th century.

ICON 11 Call for Papers
Tumblr media
Download a PDF of the ICON11 Call for Papers
Academic and professional submissions are invited for peer review for ICON11: The Illustration Conference. The Conference will be in Kansas City, Missouri, from Sunday, June 28 until Wednesday, July 1, 2020. The first two days of the conference are devoted to the Education Symposium and workshops; the second two days of the conference consist of main stage events with speakers, panels and presentations representing a broad range of specialties from the fields of illustration and design.
ILLUSTRATION AS PRIVATE / PUBLIC PRACTICE
Symposium Date: June 28–29, 2020
Venue: Epperson Auditorium, Vanderslice Hall, Kansas City Art Institute, Kansas City, MO
Dates for abstracts submission: August 1, 2019
The ICON11 Education Symposium seeks to explore how educators can inspire students to cultivate their individual voices and perspectives while situating themselves in the marketplace in viable and sustainable ways. The multitude of contemporary mechanisms to create and distribute work have expanded the opportunities for illustrators and redefined the creator/client relationship. How do educators incorporate these realities into their teaching?
CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
An open call is made for contributions that broaden the understanding of how illustration is changing in the classroom and in practice. Unusual avenues of practice and inquiry are welcome, including both theory and practice-based researchers, academics, illustrators, typographers, designers, painters and artists.
POSSIBLE THEMES MIGHT INCLUDE
Hand Made: How do we allow for illustration programs to dovetail with classes that teach traditional crafts and media; to apply illustration to media beyond paper? What are cross-institutional opportunities?
Illustrator as Artist: How do teachers encourage a private practice of self-initiated artwork? To what degree is the province of the studio artist explored, the avenue of grant writing and gallery exhibitions? Does this necessitate the creation of entirely separate bodies of work?
Artist as Author: How is storytelling expanded beyond picture making into incorporated language? Is the narrative a purely personal one, as in memoir?
The Illustrator in the Marketplace: How do we expose students to opportunities to engage in direct sales, both online and through events?
Space & Time: The evolution of 3-D, Interactive and Motion-based Illustration (and how to teach it all)
The Invisible Classroom: How does digital technology affect traditional teaching? What are the flaws and assets of remote teaching?
Style: How do teachers help students cultivate their own styles? Does individual style matter?
Thinking Globally, Working Locally: What are topical societal issues that propel students? How can they incorporate matters that matter to them in their work and in their community?
Collaboration: What are projects that involve collective thinking and making; how are they managed?
Inspiration: What are processes that effectively jump-start creative brainstorming?
Artist as Mentor: How can students engage with younger, (or older!), disadvantaged or isolated communities, to share, articulate, and inspire with what they know?
The Art of Seeing: How do we teach students to look closely, to develop a critical eye, to become thoughtful consumers of visual images and to clearly express what they think about what they see?
Shifting Realities: How do we keep up with the changing nature of illustration?
Those wishing to participate are invited to submit proposals for research papers and presentations addressing the themes suggested above or other themes pertinent to the current state of the field of illustration and the challenges facing illustration faculty and students.
ABSTRACT FORMAT
Initial submissions should take the form of an abstract of up to 300 words.
Bullet points of key concepts will be accepted.
In addition to the abstract, please include the presenter’s name(s), affiliation, email and postal address together with the title of the paper and a 150 word biographical note on the presenter(s). These can be as PDF or Word documents.
Please name your abstract document: LastFirstname_ICON11Abstract.
SUBMIT ABSTRACTS BY AUGUST 1, 2019
Email to Marty Blake: [email protected]
Acknowledgment of receipt of your abstract submission will be made within 5 working days.
Selected proposals will be juried by ICON11’s panel of peer reviewers, including Education Chair Marty Blake, Syracuse University and Education Advisor, David Terrill, Kansas City Art Institute. If selected, papers should be from 3000–5000 words including bibliography. Please note: Submissions must follow Harvard system of referencing.
Authors of selected papers will be invited to present at ICON11, June 28–29, 2020. Presentations will be allowed 20 minutes.

Live a Little - Pansmione
For Femslash February 2019 Day 23, using the prompt from this list, ‘Gold’.
Mature | 1,521 words | EWE, Post-Hogwarts, Past Hermione/Ron, Flirting
I also made an edit for this fic (Tumblr | Instagram)
(AO3 Link | My Other FemslashFeb2019 works: AO3 | Tumblr)
Hermione didn’t bother looking up from her book as a drink appeared beside her at the bar. She reached out and pushed it away.
“Not interested,” she said dismissively.
“Trust me, Granger, you’re more interested in taking a drink from me than the man who was on his way over here,” a familiar voice said.
Familiar enough to draw Hermione’s attention away from her book. “Parkinson?”
Parkinson flicked some hair out of her face and took the barstool next to Hermione’s. She pushed the drink back towards her but Hermione didn’t look at it. She was a little more distracted by how short Parkinson’s skirt was, and sitting only made it ride up more until Hermione was sure she could see a flash of colour that could only be her knickers.
“Oh, let’s dispense with the hostility, shall we?” Parkinson said with an over-dramatic sigh that was loud enough to be heard over the chatter in the room. “Last names are so last season.”
Hermione glanced around the hotel bar. For an uncomfortable moment, her eyes met the gaze of a man who was staring at her with a scowl, a drink in each of his hands. Looking at him made Hermione shudder with an uncomfortable feeling, and she looked back to Parkinson instead.
“I suppose you’re slightly more tolerable than him,” she said, closing her book. It was unlikely Parkinson would leave her alone. “Dare I ask what you’re doing in a hotel bar on a Wednesday night?”
Parkinson took a sip of her own drink, something that seemed to glitter in the light. “I’m working, obviously.”
“Working?” Hermione raised an eyebrow.
With an expression of disgust, Parkinson kicked Hermione’s leg. “Not that kind of work! I’m a reporter, I just got done interviewing someone.”
Even though she dearly wanted to kick her back, Hermione turned sideways on her stool to give her more attention. “A reporter? For what newspaper? I’ve never seen your name anywhere.”
Parkinson rolled her eyes. “I write under a pseudonym, obviously. I’d never get any readers otherwise, and I certainly wouldn’t get anything printed in the first place with my own name attached. Surely an intelligent woman such as yourself could have figured that out.” Parkinson looked her over slowly. “Or are you refusing my drink because you’ve already had too many? Is that book some tool to sober up?”
Hermione scowled and slipped the book into her handbag.
Parkinson seemed to take that as invitation to lean closer and keep talking.
“Why are you reading in a hotel bar, of all places?” she asked, looking entirely too interested.
“There’s no story here,” Hermione scoffed. “Surely you’re aware there’s a symposium on non-human rights in the conference room on the third floor. There was a sign in the lobby. Surely a reporter would take note.”
With a pleased sort of hum, Parkinson sipped her drink again. It definitely glittered, and Hermione tried to figure out how without looking at it too openly.
“If there’s one thing I’ve learned over the years, it’s that there’s always a story around you lot,” Parkinson said, putting the drink down and leaning even closer to her, until Hermione was sure she’d tip right off her stool. “Isn’t today Weasley’s wedding? To that Squib working in the Department of Mysteries?”
Heat flooded Hermione’s face. “The work I do is too important to miss a chance of networking with non-human rights workers in other countries. I’m not avoiding the wedding, this is just more important.”
Parkinson leaned one elbow on the bar and hummed. “But it must be nice that it coincided with your ex-boyfriend’s wedding.”
Hermione scowled and turned to grab the drink Parkinson had put down beside her. She’d gotten over Ron a long time ago, and they were still friends, but that didn’t mean she wanted to show up to his wedding without a date and admit to everyone that she was still alone. She wouldn’t normally care, but today...
As she picked up her drink, something in an elegant wine glass, it caught the light and glittered. Thoroughly distracted, she brought it closer to her face and squinted at it.
“Tell me that’s not real?” she gasped, putting the drink back down and staring at Parkinson.
With a satisfied looking smile, Parkinson took a sip from her own glass.
“Why is there gold in our drinks?” Hermione hissed.
Parkinson shrugged. “Why not?”
Hermione stared at her and then looked at the drink again. Light reflected off some gold flakes that she’d unsettled when she’d put it down suddenly.
“You know, the symposium only runs until five,” Parkinson said, turning to face the room and leaning back against the bar. “It’s now nine-thirty. Why don’t you just go home? Surely they’re not going to come looking for you just because you didn’t show up to the wedding.”
“None of your bloody business,” Hermione snapped, grabbing her handbag off the bar and hopping off her stool.
Before she could go far, a hand wrapped gently around her wrist and tugged her back.
“Yeah, going home to a lonely apartment while someone you once loved gets married must be very off-putting,” Parkinson said, picking up Hermione’s discarded drink and holding it up to her. “If there’s one thing you could do today, it’s have a drink Weasley would never be able to afford.”
Hermione stared down at the swirling gold flakes. The idea of drinking it was utterly insane. The fact it had been paid for by Parkinson only made it worse.
Parkinson tugged her closer again until she found herself standing between her legs.
“A woman like you deserves expensive things every once and a while,” Parkinson said, much softer. “They’re probably sipping cheap champagne, you could be drinking gold.”
An oddly inappropriate surge of heat passed through Hermione as she realised Parkinson was flirting with her.
As if knowing exactly what she was thinking, Parkinson raised and eyebrow and pressed the glass into one of Hermione’s hands. Hermione gripped it unconsciously as she took in the way Parkinson was looking at her, and the fact it didn’t repulse her like she would have expected.
“Go on,” Parkinson murmured. “Live a little.”
Without really understanding why, and still thinking it was ridiculous, Hermione found herself taking a sip of the drink. It was good wine, and if she had any gold in her mouthful she couldn’t tell, she couldn’t stop looking at Parkinson.
“There was no interview, was there?” she asked.
Parkinson smiled slowly. It wasn’t a smirk like Hermione expected, it was something much warmer.
“Oh, there was,” Parkinson said. “But I like that you think I’m here just for you. It’s bold, confident. I like it.”
Hermione found herself sipping the wine again just for lack of anything to say. Even if it was still ridiculous, she found herself thinking it would have gone nicely with the desert she’d had after dinner in the hotel restaurant.
Parkinson was flirting with her. More than that, she felt herself responding. She held her gaze, she stayed standing close between her legs. She didn’t brush off Parkinson’s hand when it came to rest on her hip.
“But I will admit,” Parkinson said softly, holding her gaze the whole time, “I saw you when I came in, and the whole time I was talking to him I was hoping you’d still be here when I was done.”
“To buy me a drink?” Hermione asked, meaning to scoff but finding herself quite unable.
“Oh, I wasn’t sure what I was going to do,” Parkinson admitted, both hands now on Hermione’s waist, tugging her just a little closer until the front of Hermione’s legs bumped the stool and her body touched Parkinson’s. “We don’t exactly have the best history, but there was always something about you...”
Hermione’s breath seemed caught in her throat. She put the drink down on the bar but still didn’t move away.
“Something about me?” she asked.
Parkinson hummed, her thumbs rubbing softly at her sides. “Come back to my place,” she said. “You don’t need to go home to an empty flat tonight.”
Hermione felt faint. Worse than that, she was still reacting to her. Her breathing had quickened, her heart rate had elevated. There was heat between her legs. All from the fact Parkinson had made a move on her. Just from proximity and suggestion.
“That’s even more ridiculous than gold flakes in wine,” she said.
“A woman like you deserves nice things,” Parkinson murmured.
“Oh? And you’re nice are you?”
Quite without explanation, she was leaning closer to her. She felt utterly drawn to her and there was no possible explanation aside from some lingering petty desire to not be alone while Ron got married.
“I can be,” Parkinson said with a quirk to her lips. “Aren’t you dying to find out?”
Hermione’s breath caught in her throat again. Oddly, she was.
“Go on,” Parkinson breathed, her hands leaving Hermione’s waist to cup her jaw. “Live a little.”
After only a moment of hesitation, Hermione closed her eyes, thought ‘to hell with it’, and kissed her.
