Look, @bettertasting I don't need an excuse to talk about Real Genius (1985) but if you insist, here we go:

Real Genius is about a 15 year old, Mitch Taylor, who gets accepted to Pacific Tech University (basically a stand in for Cal Tech), and gets put on a special laser project by his professor and sponsor, Jerry Hathaway. Mitch's roommate is senior Chris Knight who, according to Hathaway, is arrogant and disrespectful, and would rather party instead of studying. And then around them are a wonderfully strange cast of characters: Kent, a snobby teacher's pet who is jealous of Chris and later Mitch; Jordan the manic girl down the hall who never sleeps and becomes Mitch's love interest; Lazlo Hollyfeld who attended Pacific Tech in the 70s, burned out, and now lives in their closet; and a whole series of other weirdos.

Hathaway puts Mitch on a special project with Kent and his buddies to develop a very accurate, high powered laser. Chris tries to get Mitch to loosen up and distracts him from his work by bringing him to parties and pulling pranks on Kent. When Hathaway gets wind of these antics he threatens to fail Chris out of school despite being on the brink of graduation. To prove Hathaway wrong, Chris doubles down and makes a huge breakthrough on the laser project... after which they learn that the whole project was for the military, and they've created a weapon that can vaporize a human target from space.

And, as you might expect, they can't let Hathaway get away with using their work as a weapon, so they set out to sabotage the test... with popcorn.

OK, so that's the plot. The other key things to know:

Jerry Hathaway is played by William Atherton aka the douche from Ghostbusters (1984) and later Die Hard (1988), and he's so great at also being a douche here. He doesn't care about his students or the school; he only cares about his own career which includes a science TV show and his military contract.

And Chris Knight is brilliantly played by pre-Top Gun Val Kilmer. He's so hot in this, and so funny, and he just makes this character so dynamic.

The dialogue in this movie is so hilarious and brilliant. I was going to just transcribe this discussion between Mitch and Chris about the guy living in their closet, but just reading it won't do it justice.

And, here's the other thing: this is an 80s movie. In every sense of the meaning. It has not one, not two, but THREE full song montages to convey the passage of time. And the end credits song is "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" by Tears for Fears.

So yeah, this is my favorite movie of all time. I can quote the whole thing forward and backward. I was actually once at a party and quoted something from this, and a guy jokingly proposed (then I blew his mind by calling over my sister who also was able to quote with me). I have seen this more times than I can count, and it's one of the movies I put on when I'm having a bad day and want to feel better.

AND as a final fun fact: James Roday Rodriguez based his portrayal of Shawn Spencer from Psych on Val's portrayal of Chris Knight.
