Where do you find these manuscripts? Is it like a website or do you find it randomly??

hey, thanks for the curiosity! lenghty answer below the cut :)

medieval manuscripts are typically owned by libraries and showcased on the library's websites. so one thing i do is i randomly browse those digitized manuscript collections (like the collections of the bavarian state library or the bodleian libraries, to name just two), which everybody can do for free without any special access. some digital collections provide more useful tools than others (like search functions, filters, annotations on each manuscript). if they don't, the process of wading through numerous non-illustrated manuscripts before i find an illustrated one at all can be quite tedious.

there are databases which help to navigate the vast sea of manuscripts. the one i couldn't live without personally use the most is called KdIH (Katalog der deutschsprachigen illustrierten Handschriften des Mittelalters). it's a project which aims to list all illustrated medieval manuscripts written in german dialects. the KdIH provides descriptions of the contents of each manuscript (with a focus on the illustrations), and if there's a digital reproduction of a manuscript available anywhere, the KdIH usually links to it. the KdIH is an invaluable tool for me because of its focus on illustrated manuscripts, because of the informations it provides for each manuscript, and because of its useful search function (once you've gotten over the initial confusion of how to navigate the website). the downside is that it includes only german manuscripts, which is one of the main reasons for the over-representation of german manuscripts on my blog (sorry about that).

another important database for german manuscripts in general (i.e. not just illustrated ones) is the handschriftencensus, which catalogues information regarding the entirety of german language manuscripts of the middle ages, and also links to the digital reproductions of each manuscript.

then there are simply considerable snowball effects. if you do even just superficial research on any medieval topic at all (say, if you open the wikipedia article on alchemy), you will inevitably stumble upon mentions of specific illustrated manuscripts. the next step is to simply search for a digital copy of the manuscript in question (this part can sometimes be easier said than done, especially when you're coming from wikipedia). one thing to keep in mind is that a manuscript illustration seldom comes alone - so every hint to any illustration at all is a greatly valuable one (if you do what i do lol). there's always gonna be something interesting in any given illustrated manuscript. (sidenote: one very effective 'cheat code' would be to simply go through all manuscripts that other online hobbyist archivers of manuscript illustrations have gone through before - like @discardingimages on tumblr - but some kind of 'professional pride' detains me from doing so. that's just a kind of stubbornness though. like, i want to find my material more or less on my own, not just the images but also the manuscripts, and i apply arbitrary rules to my search as to what exactly that means.)

whatever tool or strategy i use to find specific illustrated manuscripts-- in the end, one unavoidable step is to actually manually skim through the (digitized) manuscript. i usually have at least a quick look at every single illustrated page, and i download or screenshot everything that is interesting to me. this process can take up to an hour per manuscript.

in conclusion, i'd say that finding cool illuminated manuscripts is much simpler than i would have thought before i started this blog. there are so many of them out there and they're basically just 'hidden in plain side', it's really astounding. finding the manuscripts doesn't require special skills, just some basic experience with/knowledge of the tools available. the reason i'm able to post interesting images almost daily is just that i spend a lot of time doing all of this, going through manuscripts, curating this blog, etc. i find a lot of comfort in it, i learn a lot along the way, and i immensely enjoy people's engagement with my posts. so that's that :)

listen. harry brewis isn't exempt to criticism. however I think it's very ironic and telling how much people have been missing the very point of his video on plagiarism and turned his name on a new topic to exploit as of late. when i was trying to look up clips of harry's older videos this came up, and the contents were about the creator clearly being disapointed her line of work (drama youtube) was disregarded as sloppy and something with no effort put into it.

while I do understand her hurt, the thumbnail and title is inherently clickbaiting potential viewers, and her point comes off as a nitpick of a segment harry made out of his own frustration with content mills and how much situations on or between content creators can be so throughly exploited for "commentary" when people don't end up saying anything at all. I think that this is a prime example of the things harry deemed important to criticise. someone who clearly had a point to make about harry's video felt the need to make sure they could milk the shit out of it.

i wanted to make some dinky elevator pitch introductions for my fav ocs because.. i dont talk about them very coherently it seems. or at all! what!!

to finally make up for that i'll put my extended edition under the cut below. love peace taco grease and stay frosty forever

so from what i gather in my notes, razz is the only recognizable one around here who got their lore blasted from a megaphone the second i came up with it. after that i got shy.. i was too busy having thoughts to ever explain who molly and Q were or where they came from. and its been like 2 years. well!

nat and molly are formerly codependent childhood friends and funhouse mirror versions of each other who split paths after high school. theyre like if two besties fated to be a detective duo spat on fate's shoes and ran off in different directions to do the same thing but badly & alone.. molly actually hit the books to become a private investigator, champion of truth and justice, while nat hit the pavement to become a paparazzo, champion of clickbait. they hate each other a lot but given the slightest chance they will attach at the hip again and drain the life from each other.

Q is later to the party, a terminally exhausted college dropout and shut-in with a notable (anonymous) presence in the online music scene. every slight inconvenience in his life is a straw and when the last one hits boy is he ready to just drive into the sunset or maybe the ocean or maybe just live in his car and stop talking to people forever. if the band they joined out of peer pressure makes it big or they get found out for their alter ego its so over..but luckily they started dating the most nosy and paranoid idiot alive & inadvertently pissed off the second most nosy and paranoid idiot alive in the process, so surely nothing like that could ever happen

these goobs run in slightly different circles that overlap juuust enough to be a problem, and its hard not to run into the most annoying eccentrics in their unserious version of LA slightly stuck out of time. if i were reintroducing lore important characters itd include plenty more than just them (eg freddy mysteriously missing from this description of events as if he isnt also there) but imho i have no obligation to pay attention to anything outside the range of my hyperfixation blast. the important thing to me rn is just to let yall know what the hell im talking about when i make stupid jokes everyday about girlies who dont exist <3

Quahaug Concept Art

Quahaug's concept/reference art! Translation notes and image id under the cut.

Translation notes:

"OP sort of powerset" was literally translated as something like "cheat-like." I feel like OP is the more common English term for that sort of thing, so that's what I used, but some of the meaning was probably lost there.

"Older-tween-ish" was specifically a reference to a particular middle school year for children who are about 12-13 years old. Since grades and names of grades vary a lot from country to country, I just went with "older tween."

There's also several notes that explain the construction of his costume. The costume is labeled as a Greek "phelonion" (a priest's outfit with no real sleeves, just draping fabric). There is a small drawing of this version, with an arrow leading to another drawing that does have sleeves, with the note, "If you can't display this in pixels, use this one." There are several notes that explain how this draping cloth should be considered his everyday clothes, while the ceremonial decoration that goes around his neck is placed over it. There is a close up of the ceremonial dressing's fastenings underneath the metal decoration. Some more notes highlight details on his staff, emphasizing the hourglass on top and the small wheel to the side that can be turned to flip the hourglass. A larger piece of text underneath one fullbody drawing reads, "Character Who Manipulates Time."

On the second half of the second page, there are drawings of some beta designs for Quahaug. He looks much more punk-ish. On one bust-up portrait, there are the captions, "The burden of the time demon caused some of his hair to go gray…." and "All-natural highlighted tips." On the same portrait, he is snapping his fingers, and there's a note that reads, "Manipulating time is as easy as snapping your fingers. You just have to want it or whatever." A speech bubble near his head reads, "I don't think of Anna as a mother." A caption pointing to some green markings on his arm reads, "Demonic time seal on body." In a fullbody drawing of his beta design (which is made up mostly of chains that barely cover him as well as a long roughed-up cloak, there is the note, "Almost naked cloak."

At the bottom of the second page, there is another note that reads, "Initially when we hadn't quite figured out the setting, we had an idea for a more older-tween-ish character as displayed here, but after discussing it with the producers and Mr. Ikushima, we went with his current form. As a boy who manipulates time, I placed an hourglass at the tip of his staff, and his face resembles that of his mother, Lyla. (Tatsuaki Irushibara)". /end id]

some time ago we talked about viv helping v on her healing journey (girlie cannot catch a break from being a babysitter even after she got johnny a body LMAO) and even though v never ends up at rehab (maybe that will change) it still fits pretty well.

V³ had a pretty big fight at one point. viv was always going to leave for arasaka but v never understood or accepted it. they argued for hours and when vincent didn't chose her side, v stormed off to go on a weeklong bender. when she returned the flat was empty, both her siblings had left -and betrayed her. naturally, viv also felt betrayed by her childhood friend, all she asked for was support but instead she got called a traitor. i like to imagine this song plays on the radio one day after their reunion

TO ME this is THE streetkid song but it hits hard especially in this universe. as i mentioned before V³ thinks they picked the right path, they aren't gonna be beat (and honestly vincent is the only one who succeeded). viv had a good run but then she got kicked from the corp, lost her newest best friend, DIED and now has a whole other person stuck in her skull. v was stubborn, was homeless for a bit and is overall in a bad way (but then again, that's the only way she knows how to live so it's not as bad TO HER)

THIS IS A BIG ONE SO BUCKLE IN FOLKS bishi and i had been talking about a personal quest for v and we ended up on this: one day they are driving somewhere while listening to the radio when a host teases a special treat! they have exclusive rights to the music of NC born and bred band Rotten! (yeah you guessed it! V's band) naturally this fills her with pure rage and viv knows this isn't going to end well (babysitting time!) v knows exactly who did this and is hellbent on rectifying this (there is more but yall are gonna have to wait for the day i decide to write it lmao) As Above, So Below is the name of the job! it is a song that v wrote but only she knows about it. while viv wasn't a band member she was there for it's founding and a few first concerts, she filmed a lot of it and even ran the merch stand a bit

YES the song is about v not wanting to sign with a label and it is her final fuck you to the world of music. in reality that song is incredibly underproduced since by the time it was recorded the band had already broken up. v did ALL of it: singing, instruments, songwriting. editing magic made it come to life. depending on how it ends (yes there are multiple outcomes) viv will receive a shard with ALL of rotten's music, including THIS unreleased song and even some backstage footage from way back in the day when viv was still around.

Okay, but were they saying "it's ableist to expect me to understand the concept of an analogy" or were they rightfully upset that when they took it literally you made fun of them, shit on them, or got overly angry at them for MISSING a metaphor, which some people in fact DO struggle to catch and understand? If you had just said "hey, I get what you mean, but what I meant was [good explanation that was provided in the tags], if you reframe it that way does that help? It was meant as a metaphor" would they have been chill?

Because if they'd still be bitey about it, yeah, I wouldn't share a beverage, food, OR time with them OR trust them with a task involving caring for others. But I'm SO USED TO people twisting the words of disabled people and taking them out of context to make it look like we're saying something completely ridiculous and shut down discussions of our actual struggles and oppression than I'm willing to bet I wouldn't even consider giving you the time of day after seeing which one it was. -_-

Also literally, EXPECTING everyone to get metaphors without being told they are not literally, especially when phrased in a way that a literal read makes sense, and then making fun of them or getting mad at them for making a single damn MISTAKE based on the way their brain naturally interprets things??? Yeah, that's fucking ableism.

You ever listened to a neurodivergent person talk about the trauma they went through as kids? This is one of the main. fucking. things!! We had to be explicitly TAUGHT to recognize and understand metaphors, and some of us still struggle with it! Hell, neurotypical kids had to be taught too, their brains are just naturally more able to "get it" in some cases.

Don't @ me about this because I struggled as a kid but in fact I do get, use (even overuse), and love metaphors nowadays! But I spent YEARS dealing with adults going "why don't you get it. it's obvious. you should know this already," when I DIDN'T AND COULDN'T AND THAT WAS THEIR FAILURE, NOT MINE.

Perpetuating that treatment with traumatized adults because they made a mistake, or yes, even are truly incapable of understanding metaphor, is ableism, asshat.

Let me stop you right there. If you're asking if it's ableism to expect someone to do something - mentally or physically, as even something like understanding is a neurological process - then yes! It's fucking ableism! Because there's virtually nothing that's impossible for a disabled person to be unABLE to do, and especially one of the neurodivergent DISABILITY symptoms that's so common as to be a stereotype.

(No, it's not a false stereotype. It's less common than the stereotype suggests, mind you, but I'm not going to throw my siblings with that symptom under the bus because of it.)

Next time maybe just take the time to EXPLAIN to someone instead of basically saying "lol these id*ots think it's ableist to judge them for not being able to immediately understand this actually fairly complex concept that requires significant critical thought without help just because I falsely think I'm really good at the same concept (which, even if they were good at reading comprehension would be just as bad, but it adds some irony due to their hypocrisy)".

Anyway tl;dr I wouldn't share a cup of piss or entrust a pet rock to the person saying that, given that they are in fact a massive ableist and are likely even worse than we have full context for given the prevalence of the ableism bad faith misinterpretations and manipulative reframing of them as a form of ableism itself used to shut down discussions of ableism overall.

Oh, and bonus, aside from the whole "this isn't a clear metaphor and I'm reinterpreting your words in the worst faith possible and making fun of you for not understanding something...

Some people are incapable of the puppy one, even at a metaphorical level, because they are too disabled to take care of even the simplest living creature. Hell, "trust to do a task" can be something you can't do with severely disabled people. AND some people are often unable to give you their time, especially in person nowadays but sometimes even over safely distanced video calls and such. They should be ACTIVELY AVOIDED because they're not able to spend time with you?

I get that this wasn't the point the original was making, because it didn't consider the nuances of the disabled experience. People rarely do. This is about abled people. And yes, you can make an argument about "people I want to spend time with even if they can't always" vs "people I don't" or "people I need to rely on for tasks" vs "people I don't", but perhaps you should check and make SURE you're not in fact being biased by ableism into not wanting to hang out with good caring friends because they can't often do so, or relying on them for tasks they've told you they can't do but you're putting on them anyway.

Nearly every disabled person with more than minimal support needs has experienced the "friend exodus" when they become disabled/chronically ill. A video call becomes an "inconvenience" when it's really just that the abled person has a preference to hang out in person despite doing so quite literally being less convenient (and often, they are not safe for an immunocompromised person to be around).

Like I'm not sorry that I'm not sorry. Abled people shut up forever. Disabled people with low support needs and relative privilege? Stay in your lane and STOP with the assimilationist "well I'm disabled and I can do this/don't need this/don't think I'm perpetrating lateral ableism against disabled people with higher support needs". If you've been guilty of this (as I myself have been in the past!) just fucking apologize and do better! Don't DOUBLE DOWN because you refuse to face up to your own guilt and remorse!

Yes, all that is a reading of what the author said that wasn't intended and isn't present in the text. Knowing that is reading comprehension, and how's that for critical thought? Expanding on how a passage exhibits indirect bias influenced by disabled erasure and influences and shapes the attitudes of people who ARE ableist because of THEIR pre-existing biases... y'know, I get the urge to make fun, because I'm also pissed the fuck off, but actually I'll not give into the urge to do so because that would be hypocritical and ableist.

Instead I will say if you would like me to expand on that, or explain it better, or honestly use simpler language because I know I use high level words all the time, I am genuinely ALWAYS happy to talk about it with you and help people understand.

My frustration is with the people who do understand but wilfully refuse to genuinely engage with it and listen and have a real dialogue, and instead get defensive and double down on their ableism - and the second part is the part I have an issue with. I can't actually tell if someone is being ableist because they genuinely don't understand - in which case they need to ask questions or simply not speak over us as if they are an expert - or because they are pretending not to (which is a behavior I recognize from my past self, hence naming it at all).

It's not really about the understanding. It's about how you respond to it. Naming both is important because to be better, people need to respond to them differently. They need to recognize whether they are getting defensive over a genuine struggle to understand what someone means or over a denying a recognition of their own complicity in ableism. Each has a slightly different solution, but both boil down to not asserting that the person complaining about ableism is wrong and either asking questions or doing some damn introspection to make sure you root out your OWN ableist biases and are a better ally (as an abled person) or not hindering disabled liberation by being an assimilationist (as a disabled person).

Anyway look out for an essay eventually on the specific phenomenon of this manipulation of disabled people's conversations on ableism to shut them down. We will have it up as soon as the hyperfocus strikes.

The Union of Soviet Super Soldiers (USSS):

It's 1976 or 1977. At least 12 years since the avengers were founded in the US. The Soviet Union is desperate to create their own superhero team to rival the avengers. They've tried to create figures like the Red Guardian, or the Crimson Dynamo or Titanium Man before, but it always fails. But perhaps it's because they never assembled a proper team? That's the logic that leads to the creation of the Union of Soviet Super Soldiers (Or USSS for short) in 1976 or 1977.

Founded in July 1976, the original team consists of:

Red Guardian III (Vladimir Ivanov): I already have a whole note on him. But he's the team leader, and one of the members of the team most devoted to Communism.

Vanguard (Nikolai Krylenko): He's a real comics character. I'm pretty sure you can find info on him through a Marvel Wiki or through Google (that's how I learned of him).

The Winter Witch (Katerina Obolensky): Abandoned as a child in the snowy mountains of Siberia, Katerina Obolensky learned to be one with the ice and snow. Nobody is sure if she's a mutant or some kind of demigod, but she is definitely powerful. Capable of controlling the ice, snow and winds at a single thought. She can generate winds, blizzards, avalanches, etc. When in her natural element she is a god amongst men. But when she's far separated from any form of cold, she becomes weak and frail.

The Gift-Bringer (Adrian Abel): Adrian Abel is a mutant. Born with the uncanny ability to control poison and even generate it (they can turn their whole body into poison dust or into liquid poison, for instance), they were considered a threat to others and sent off to an elite mutant training facility in Russia. There, they learned how to control their powers and make themselves less dangerous to others. Worst comes to worst, they were at least given a containment suit to prevent them from accidentally killing anyone with their poison.

Considering how powerful they are, it's only natural Adrian was recruited to the USSS. They're both powerful and extremely volatile, however. So they possibly be the most dangerous person on the team. So they require extreme protective measures to ensure they don't accidentally poison the people they're trying to help.

PS: Adrian is the only character not originally from the USSR. They're East German. I realized the German word for poison is gift due to google translate, and so I couldn't resist this bit of humour.

Crimson Dynamo (Dmitri Bukharin): Same as Vanguard. The Crimson Dynamo (including this version of him) is a real comics character who can find out more about through Google or a Marvel Wiki or something.

If you're wondering where in the timeline of comics this is supposed to be, it's shortly after Darkstar defects to the US to join The Champions. And she will join this team eventually, if someone (either me or literally anyone else) takes this idea past the concept stage.
