As an avid fan and simp of Hildegard Von Bingen I kindly gift the paragraph from my religion final essay on the film about her and how her vocational journey is inseparable from her queerness:

The most influential relationship in the film is between Hildegard and a young nun named Richardis. The inclusion of this relationship is essential to Hildegard as a character being counter-cultural. The language she uses to describe her feelings toward Richardis are extremely reminiscent of that which Joan of Arc used to describe her call to dress as a man (though it is more pre-reminiscent, as Joan was born 300-400 years after Hildegard). Joan of Arc is seen, at least in the modern world, as an example of queerness and gender role subversion within the church. Hildegard is the same- her pain in Richardis’ leaving, Richardis’ death being the catalyst for her traveling ministry, it all is an example of queerness in the church. Additionally, her description that she was called to love Richardis is strikingly similar to her description of her call to record her visions. Hildegard’s story cannot be separated from its queerness because it is an essential element of her being counter-cultural.
